"What, why?" San laughs. "No, let's go get lunch. On me."

"San." Zara furrows her brows at him, crossing her arms in dispute.

"Seriously."

"I'm the one who asked you to meet, shouldn't I be paying?"

"Not really." He laughs. "Besides, I don't have anything going on until after lunch. Unless.. you're busy?"

"No. I'm not." San smiles and nods towards one of the cafés nearby.

"Okay, so let's go." 

"You don't need to meet anyone for once?" She jokes.

"Nah. Well, you, now." Zara playfully rolls her eyes and follows alongside of him. It had been a couple of days post-symposium, and Zara had received some emails regarding potential tours of her lab space, especially from donors. She had sought advice from the rest of the group, but she wanted to meet with San to get a little bit more info on his experience. 

And he had provided her with more help than she could've asked for.

The rest, although insightful, gave her advice— going along the lines of 'just be yourself!' or 'elaborate on your work, you should be gold!' But, San managed to take his time with her and gave her specific scenarios. Specific what-not-to-do's and what-to-do's, adding in a sprinkle of personalities and focus points from the foundations that reached out based on his own experience. He even gave her more tips on how to present her lab while it's still a work in progress with the one postdoc and grad student she has.

She really appreciated it, and she couldn't help but feel a little more attracted to the man San had shown to be. He was always helpful and incredibly sweet from the beginning, but with someone who has a packed schedule day in and day out— she couldn't help but be grateful for the extra time he carved out for her. It hadn't been their first meeting, obviously. This had been one of a few since she started; mainly meetings to check in and see how things were going. But, Zara appreciated every single one because she knew San had a busy schedule.

Yet, he still carved out time for her.

And maybe she was being a little too optimistic—after all, most meetings had been about her. She knows a few things about San, like his parents and what they've been up to. She knows that he enjoys watching all sports with the guys, likes dabbling in golf and random hobbies with them and hanging out at each other's homes. She knows that Iseul was his ex-wife, but it was such a known fact around campus she couldn't say it was a San fact only she knew. She knows him mainly from a colleague perspective; she knows about his work and awards. Other than that, she doesn't know much. San might know a little more about her than she does with him and that's because she put it out there hoping he'd feel more comfortable to on his end.

Oh well.

When they reach the café, San scans the menu next to Zara, while Zara can't seem to help but glaze over his figure. He's wearing a brown button up with the sleeves rolled up halfway. Jeans. Chucks. Zara can faintly smell his cologne from where she stands. She's a bit past his shoulder in height, right by his jaw perhaps. They've got a good height difference, bearing that she's in these boots with a 1.5-inch heel.

"Zara?" He cocks his head to the side when he finds her spaced out, eyes now roaming around the café.

"Hm?" She hums.

"I was asking if you knew what you wanted." He smiles and she can't help but softly smile, too.

"I'm just gonna get the tuna melt."

"That's all?"

"And the peach iced tea, please." He chuckles.

"I got you."

"I'm gonna go save us that table." She points over to a free booth that just popped open, and San nods. She breaks free from him after he asks one last time if she wanted anything else, giving him that smile of hers before walking away and settling down at the table. She pulls out her phone and scrolls through new emails, answering a select few until San plops down in front of her. He slides the beeper and their drinks onto the middle of the table, pulling out his phone to scroll through his own notifications.

San subtly smiles and quickly texts back, trying his best not to be too pre-occupied while with his colleague.

san: prettiest i know. 😍

"So." Zara sips on her peach iced tea. "How are things going in the lab?"

"Uh, it's been good! Everyone's busy per usual. I've got a postdoc actively working on his paper, and he's been getting a lot of good results with my rotation student."

"Sunwoo?" San nods. "Who's your rotation student?"

"Y/N. She's been great."

"Oh! That's good to hear."

"Yeah, everyone seems to be moving in a good direction. Guess I'm doing something right after all." She giggles. 

"Quit talking all that nonsense, you know you're good at what you do."

"Am I?" San smirks before sipping on his drink, and it makes her blush. 

"Stop." The food comes at this moment, and San is gently sliding over her plate before grabbing his. She thanks him one last time for treating her to lunch before they dig in and talk about upcoming school events, conferences and talks— particularly NAS coming up. At some point, his phone on the table dings and Zara watches how San's eyes light up before he locks his phone and returns his attention back to her. To pivot from work for a little [and to try and pry], Zara takes a sip of her tea again before changing the subject. "So. Anyway. Any plans for the weekend?" She rests her chin on her palm, looking at him while she waits for him to respond. 

San can see the way she looks at him, and it reminds him of the way you look at him. But, of course, it means a lot to San when you do it; it only makes him feel bad when Zara does it. Zara hasn't outright said she had feelings for him, but it's been pretty clear since the get. And he knows having Mingi and his friends in her ear, pushing the idea of them getting together doesn't help. Maybe one day he'll get the opportunity to talk to her and tell her the truth— that he truthfully believed they were good this way, as good friends, colleagues. He does respect her, and he does appreciate her company as a friend. 

He's not gonna lie and say his heart doesn't belong somewhere else because it does. All he wants is you.

"I've got some plans, yeah." Is all San says, which kinda makes Zara nervous as to why he's being so vague about it.

"With what? Are you seeing a special someone?" She teases.

"Uh." He laughs it off. "Just hanging out is all. What about you?" He doesn't say much because he doesn't wanna give things away and let people connect the dots. Zara nods slowly, almost like she's trying to read his body language carefully.

"Hm, I see." Her heart drops because the way San answered is enough to tell her yes, he is seeing someone special. "I'm just gonna visit my parents."

"Oh, that'll be nice! Speaking of, I should visit mine soon."

"You should." She tosses her napkin onto the plate before setting it aside. "All done?"

"Mhm." She looks at his plate, which is also cleared off. "Packed afternoon?"

"A bit, nothing too bad. What about you?"

"I'm done after 3pm. I'll be heading out early for once."

"That's good, take advantage of it." His phone dings again and he takes a minute to read it, a small smile building at the corner of his lips before locking his phone again. He gathers their trash and stands, preparing to return the dirty dishes with his cup in hand. "Ready? I can walk you back to your building."

"You sure?" San nods.

"All good."

"Thank you, San. For lunch and for meeting with me today. Your advice was super helpful."

"Of course, any time." Zara's heart warms at the way he waits for her and walks alongside of her on the way out of the café. He holds the door open and lets her walk out first, slowly trailing by her side as they make their way back to her building.

She's unsure of what to do with her feelings for him, especially after today. It's obvious he's seeing someone, at least starting to. Building up to it. He saw the stars in his eyes whenever his phone dinged and he read those messages. Those stars weren't there when he returned his attention to her. All she saw were his big, brown eyes, but they weren't full of the stars, the galaxies, the sun, the moon. They were empty. No feeling, no excitement. Not the same as the way she would look at him. 

She wondered how it would feel to be on the receiving end of San's starry eyes.

That's very flattering! I'm playing a lot of Punchline's mannerisms by ear because she's very much not fleshed out, so it's intriguing that it reads otherwise! Fake it till you make it, baby!!!!

Great question! The bats would absolutely try to correct her line of thinking in regards to caste dynamics, both verbally and through example!

Verbally, Alfred and Damian and Tim would put in a lot of work trying to explain that she isn't any higher or lower status to somebody else just because she's an Omega. She has rights and personal agency and bodily autonomy that no one else should be allowed to dictate.

Bruce and Dick wouldn't have this conversation with her on account of being Alphas. She would just defer to whatever they said anyway, regardless of the message they mean to convey.

Jason doesn't have the patience to teach her about Omega rights when they first meet.

By example, Alfred would have her learn lessons through reading books together.

"See, Punchline? The main heroine in this book talked back to her Alpha and didn't face any punishment, because she's allowed to do that as a person with her own thoughts and feelings. Do you have any thoughts and feelings you might be afraid to share because you don't want to get hurt? I can assure you, that won't happen here."

Damian leads by example by Challenging Bruce and Dick more than usual, and makes sure she's watching. It doesn't take long for the others to catch on.

"I said," he'll growl, baring his teeth and taking an aggressive stance "I won't attend that asinine luncheon with you while my brain cells shrivel up and die around all that meaningless chatter your Socialite friends insist upon."

Bruce will narrow his eyes and glare back at him for a few moments, but then he'll relent and his body will slacken, deferring to his son.

"Fine, but you could've stood to be nicer about it."

Dick and Bruce lead by example in gentle ways. Literally. It doesn't take the world's greatest detective to see the scarring on Punchline's body and recognize that the Joker is the definition of Stereotypically-Abusive Alpha. So when they're near her, their voices are soft. They don't stand to their full height. Their hands are open and their scents are passive. If she upsets them, they're careful not to make her think she'll be hurt for it.

It's so, so, so much collaborative work. It's a ridiculous amount of work. Her whole world is being rocked and everything she thought was true is no longer so. She has to accept these changes slowly or she'll block it all out and dismiss it as a trick if they push too hard, too fast.

mona loves to stargaze — befitting of an astrologist. she loves taking you around different heights of mondstadt! mona knows all the best spots that have a good view of the night sky — pointing out all the constellations, rambling on to you about what they mean… she’ll even make some copies of her own star charts to give you for future reference.

not really a known fact about her, but mona is actually a pretty decent cook! she'd want to prepare you a filling (and cheap), but very delicious meal rather than go out to eat. sometimes, she’ll end up lecturing you on market prices and ways you can prepare meals for a low cost — she wouldn’t want you buying overpriced ingredients when you can get just as good ones for a cheaper price!

and yes, if you ask her nicely she can create and show you reflections other than constellations with her hydromancy… just for you though. she wouldn’t want people to think her hydromancy is all just for show.

the absolute sweetest! with how much he talks about you, people of liyue have to be living under a rock if they don’t know the two of you are together.

no has no shame with pda gaming will want to hold your hand everywhere you go. or have his arm around you. or hug you — he literally never gets embarrassed about giving you affection! he’s very into physical touch, he finds it’s comforting. i’d like to think he’s warm to the touch too — with or without the pyro vision. great cuddling material for cold days! (… hot ones too — you just have to wear breathable clothes so you don’t overheat.)

you don’t have to be into it as much as he is, but gaming would definitely want to teach you the basics of wushou dancing! he’s always there to help show and guide you through the movements — he likes to think he’s a pretty good teacher! he'll joke about putting on a duo performance… just a joke of course, haha… unless—?

oh, and man chai loves you! i like to think man chai acts more well behaved for you than he does with gaming, (he blames it on all the treats you give him) but he’s so glad you too get along! … even if man chai does steal take more of your attention when you’re together...

alhaitham

alhaitham as quite the reputation for being… unapproachable to say the least. to people, his words and gaze seems judgemental, so how could someone stand to be around someone like that? lucky for you, you're able see past what those people seemingly think of him!

the books alhaitham reads aren’t made for the average’s person leisurely reading — their complex and lengthy — but alhaitham feels a kind of… fondness when you ask him to read out loud whatever book he's currently reading to you! …even if you do end up becoming a bit sleepy due to the content of the book (he thinks it’s cute. will he say that to you? … maybe teasingly.) he also will read and take book suggestions from you if you have any for him! he doesn’t just read non-fiction (and if it’s from you, really he’s open to anything. anything.)

because of alhaitham’s day consisting pretty much on a schedule, he finds himself finding ways to incorporate you into it with his free time. he prefers to spend time with you in more quiet and secluded places around sumeru away from people, but i actually feel like he wouldn’t be opposed to dates in public! going to the likes of places such as the grand bazaar to see what people are selling or watching performances that are put on in the theatre (though most of the time it’s you dragging him out… he does find it entertaining to see your face light up at all of the sights)

on some occasions, he’ll bring you along with him when he’s invited out for drinks with cyno, kaveh and tighnari. (try your best to tease him in front of them, but he’ll always have a playful quip right back at you.)

I actually love her so much. Rize did not deserve a lot of the things that happened to her😔 I haven’t completely finished the manga and don’t want to bc the ending is kinda meh and I do not want to see the nastiness that comes from Furuta towards Rize. Like bro is actually so crazy, I do not blame her for the way she turned out, she was rly going through it.

On another note, It’s interesting thinking back on Kaneki as a character after these past couple yrs and how his apathetic personality that came out later on in the series may have been how he actually thought and would’ve acted if he wasn’t always trying to put up appearances. I never thought about his personality evolution like that until I saw a theory about it and how it could have been a result of his abuse and it’s just so cool to think about. That mixed with his unresolved feelings toward Rize after the aogiri arc was fascinating.

As I made this I imagined an AU or universe in which Kaneki understood and fully accepted Rize for who she was after he met her again and finding out she was alive the whole time and being tortured. Idk. Something about that situation rly had an impact on me when I read it in the manga and I always wished the two had more time together and got to know each other. Rize has always been a part of Kaneki since the start of the series so it would’ve been interesting to actually see her as her own person and what she may have been like instead of only having an image of her throughout the experiences everyone else has had with her. I always hated that aspect of the manga, that we never really know who she is or ever find out her own personal desires and goals.

Whenever I think of those two specific versions of them I think they may have been like a found family in which they sort of adopt a sibling relationship. That would’ve been so interesting. Kaneki has always been alone for the most part so I like to think having Rize as an older sister would’ve helped him out a lot.

Other than that there was also another scenario I thought of in which Kaneki has had no contact with her until one of the final arcs with their dragon forms, he sort of then can understand why she is how she is after learning about her history throughout the story and tries to connect with her. Hence the angsty sketch in the corner. I’d like to think Kaneki would help her take out those who have wronged her and put her in her current position. Afterwards is when they’d form a closer relationship and maybe she’d be like an aunt or older sister figure to both Kaneki and Touka since they’re together and Touka never rly liked her that much at the start. I think that’d be funny.

SoulShattered is the name of my indie game that i have been working on for a while now!! Its a story driven pixel art bullet hell! This blog is for spreading the word about my game and recording every update and thing i add have for the future!

This post is a little info dump about everything i can share about it at this moment! so if you are in any way interested in a pixel art indie game that is coming out.. some day then follow and read this post!

STORY

The spirit world is a strange place in between earth and the afterlife, when a human is both alive and dead at the same time, they get trapped in the spirit world, A place with no sun or moon but stars lighting up the pitch dark sky. The spirit world is filled with.. spirits, humanoid creatures who just live their lives, but it is also filled with monsters. One day a human named Luca woke up in the spirit world, their soul shattered into pieces not being able to remember who they are. There they meet Rae a girl who has been looking for a way to leave the spirit world for years, Rae helps Luca  To try and find all the pieces of their soul together they will travel the spirit world trying to fix Luca's soul and find a way to get back to the human world.

this is the synopsis for my game! The main storyline is about Luca trying to repair their soul and wanting to fix their memories to remember who they were. But besides Luca there is also Rae the secondary main character. She has been in the spirit world for a long time, and has been trying to find a way to get back to earth but has been unsuccessful.

GAMEPLAY

I designed Soulshattered around moving the mouse around.

If the mouse is inside the circle it is defined as close, and if the player attacsk it will have a different attack than if it was outside of the circle.

the player has 2 attack buttons, left and right click. then it has 2 variants for both attacks a close and a far version. i am also planning on adding combo's that create a different attack if you click multiple attacks at once. turning it to around 6 attacks. The first game will only have 2 tho, because i wanna give them slowly over time.

Besides the attacks the player can also switch between Luca and Rae. Both have their own hp and energy bar that keep track of their energy, every time you attack the energy goes down and if you go to zero you are forced to switch to another character until it isfilled back up. My idea is that this will force the player to keep switching strategies because Rae and Luca have completely different attacks.

Beside that the player will also have to switch characters to solve puzzle's or for a strategic advantage against certain enemies.

Right now Luca has these attacks

1 Is a gravity punch, enemies that are hit with this get shot away, if it hits another enemy or a wall/object it takes damage depending on its speed. The enemy that got hit with another enemy (or an object like a crate) will also take damage.

2 Is a basic shoot attack where the player shoots a flying fist. the player will also use a flying fist in puzzle's to pick up stuff and move them around.

1 is a blast attack, i WANT to theme it around fireworks! caus thats rly cool but i haven't been able to make it look.. like fireworks so its an explosion rn

2 is a parry, if an enemy hits the sword when it's attacking it gets stunned for a bit and takes a lot of damage.

RELEASING

The game will be posted on itch.io and maybe steam to! it will however be released in parts! Because i have a very big story i wanna tell and i'm 100% sure i wouldn't be able to make it in one big part i will be releasing it in chapters! every chapter can therefor have a slight theme and semi self contained lesson and story!

the themes that i have in mind right now are these -Steampunk robot factory -disco/rave pyramids -Cloud mountain -Sea/pirate -murder mystery train -knights and castles

These are just idea's tho, don't look too much into them.

these would all have their own chapter of the game with an overarching story.

For engine i use Godot! and gdscript as my language. for my art i use this website called pixilart.com but i wanna switch to aseprite when i get some money.

WHY

For ages my dream has been to simply make something amazing, i want to make art, or even something more, a piece of content that will inspire people. My ultimate goal with this game is to create something so amazing, that it will inspire people to make things of their own.

A story that will move people and stay with them for longer than the time it took to play the game.

A game that is fun to play and simply enjoyable and cool.

Something like the amazing shows and games that have inspired me over the years.

HEHE OK OK SO putting it under cut bc it ended up longer than i anticipated LOL

as you already know, velvox is the established relationship in this au. and as i believe i mentioned before, velvette and val are sinstagram mutuals, it's how val finds out about the hotel. on val's part, falling for velvette isn't really a surprise to him - back when they just knew each other through social media, he already found her attractive, admired her work and they got along well, so all that turning into a full-on crush when he gets to know her better isn't very shocking. his relationship with vox is where it gets interesting, because it starts out rocky. i mentioned before that vox can tell that val's putting on an act. but because vox obv can't relate to val's situation, val just sees it as vox pitying him and refuses his help. a turning point comes in ep 4 - in the swap au, it actually starts raining during loser baby, which results in val getting sick. vox helps him out and they have a tender moment, maybe a little heart-to-heart (its hard to just describe, i will make a comic/ficlet of it at one point so you'll see :3). their relationship starts getting better from that point on, and soon enough val finds himself falling for vox. (it's funny, really - ep 4 in the swap au leads to the bettering of a grand total of 3 relationships: al & val's, vox & val's and indirectly al & vox's. load bearing episode LOL) on vox and velvette's part, well. val is a douche at the start of the story, much like canon!angel, but vox and velvette can both tell that there's a heart of gold in there somewhere. vox because of the aformentioned seeing through val's facade, and velvette because she, in fact, wasn't mutuals with val's official account, but with his art account, where he keeps his identity hidden. he shows his softer side a lot more on there, and so that's mainly the side of him that velvette knew (so now imagine the whiplash when she actually meets him in person and he's an obnoxious jerk LOL) (i dont know if valentino being an artist is actually canon - i read it on the fandom wiki and fandom wikis cant rly be trusted LOL but in any case if its not canon then its a neat hc that i incorporated into swap!val's character) but anyway yeah, vox and velvette both start falling for val as he slowly becomes more true to himself and starts showing that soft side more. eventually the two of them talk about it um. somewhere around ep 6 i think? maybe? somewhere between eps 6 and 7? something like that. anyway. there we get some juicy conflict - they agree that theyre both in love with val and wanna give the whole polyamory thing a try if he's up for it, but while velvette wants to confess as soon as possible (she's scared that one of them might die in the battle), vox wants to wait until after the battle, because the stress levels are high in the hotel right now, and he doesn't want val to feel pressured. during the last night before the battle, in a scene vaguely equivalent to more than anything (reprise), they make up, velvette admits that vox is right, and they decide to confess to val after the extermination. and then yeah they do that (it's one of the 2 things that i'm sure i want to happen at the beginning of season 2), val is like "HELL YEAH I WANNA BE IN A POLYCULE WITH YOU GUYS" and they're a polycule and its awesome :3

i hc the nora thing because out of nowhere i called her nora instead of ani and stopped dead in my tracks like "wait a minute ✋🤨.... it's kinda cuuute 🥹". later on i thought it could be something that anora let's only one person call her and if someone else tries to call her that she gives them the side eye.

oh her exes are all over the map! ivan is the first big man-baby who never got told no she dated, i think she's used to dating people more like her, more confident and who are willing to face the consequences of their actions.

i don't really see ani dating anyone (beside ivan) who don't have the guts and maturity to face their consequences, i just know she can't stand people like that and rolls her eyes at them!

also i don't think she dated anyone who's a romantic, there was love in her relationships (at least some of them had love), but never that love she used to dream about when she was a little kid! she thought she could have that with ivan but then reality slapped her across the face and she started to give up on finding that kinda of love.

her only letting reader call her nora ugh what if i dissolve into goo that's so cute 😭

oh absolutely on that romantic thing. an interesting aspect of ani's character (have to paraphrase here) is that she believes fairytales can come true, believes in true love, but she's not naïve. using fairy tale rather than a romcom rly puts in that it's a childish hope almost. specifically of a love that saves the day, saves her, if you think of most fairy tales and how romances go down in them

and while ivan definitely brought that suddenness and element of "saving" in a rags to riches way, he lacks a lot of the aspects of being a fairytale prince/love interest. idk if you've seen the clip where ivan yells at hotel staff as a joke but that really irked me. the chivalry, the being dependable, being there when ani Actually needs saving? that's all reader. i totally see reader being a romantic, fulfilling the role ani needs in her life, being that person she can rely on. r would do stuff that ani would call cheesy but then think about it for days after. she'd brag about it to all her friends and realise that it meant more than even the ring she was bragging so much about.

(i suppose i'll have to see how well igor fulfils that role of being there for her, and how reader x ani's dynamic will be different from that. i suppose reader's presence is more wanted by ani, since they're close friends, so there's elements of reliance even before ivan takes off)

I gotta be honest, the Jatherine subplot is probably my least favorite part of the show (until west endsies, I really love what michael and bronté did), so 🎤

mmh yeah fair enough. they also rly sold it for me, but im gonna put them aside for a bit and just look at what we're given.

i think that maybe not notably but importantly, in watch what happens it's actually sort of explicit that kath does NOT like jack as a person, but literally. as a face. they meet and all she sees is an attractive boy in the street, (and i think it'd be cute if jack stares after her long enough for him to almost miss his "you struck out!" cue...) and he promptly bugs her until she sees who he rly is. legit all their content until wwh(r) is argumentative annoyances. we know that jack's much than that–maybe even the opposite of that–right off the bat with the prolue w/ crutchie.

so i think the genuine key to jatherine is where and when you stage miss girl katherine, when she's not speaking directly to jack.

sneaking her into moments where the real jack is seen. have her see him pick a kid up off the ground a few measures before "can I interest you in the latest news". have her be on her way to medda's show upstage when he's tugging the jacobs in front of him while running from snyder. have her watch more of the scene in jacobi's before she enters and see the pride these boys share in one another. uksies also did a great job at this tbf, but enforcing kath as the observer that denton was in 92sies would serve her so well.

because i think for katherine, which's different than davey imo, she cares first about the movement and learns to care about jack. she learns a lot about attraction because of jack, she thought she "knew what love was" or whatever, but there's something about him that changes her whole view, and i think it's learning that he is caring, sentimental, and afraid- and alone, even if he isn't actually. it's about finding the moments where kath also gets to express it back that is key, bc we already Know that abt jack as an audience- it's kath who's new to it.

give me an ACTUAL "you look like hell" moment. let her rush over to him despite herself, be surprised at her own action, nearly take his face into her hands before she notices how stiff and guarded he is right then. her feelings for him are a surpise, they "snuck up" on her, right, so finding THE moment where she understands that she has them? key. idt we ever rly get that enough so where it stands out.........especially bc davey exists and has multiple moments of this LMFAO.

jack being attracted to katherine is morrrre obvious i think, he has the i never planned on you thing, it's very clear he's making an effort to get her to stay longer or get to know her. kath is hesitant, and THAT'S very interesting, actually– but only if you do something about it.

Do you have any advice on how to learn to read faster?

not faster necessarily, no, pretty much all of my advice is abt learning to read slower sry. since most my problems are abt memory & fatigue & hitting yr cognitive threshold for the maximum amount of info you can absorb in one sitting, things like rereading & taking notes in the margins are abt forcing myself to go slower so i rly digest what it is im trying to read.

an app like instapaper, which can save articles in dark mode/large font/preferred line spacing reduces some of the difficulty for me, which i guess leads to being faster? and having the audiobook play at the same time as im reading can help too. covering up yr page (i usually use a bookmark) except to the line that yr reading is helpful to reduce the fatigue of yr eye jumping ahead on the page. i get pretty picky about the books i buy bc i try to avoid any editions where the text is too small & cramped on the page. if there is a hard passage im rly not getting, i read it out loud to myself. i use my pencil to follow along and point to the words im reading. i give myself lots of breaks so i don’t burn out. when its rly important (like having to read complex articles for my grad classes) i would try to read in bed around 10-11am bc that tended to be my best time cognitive energy-wise. difficult to do if u have other things that are higher priority, but sometimes you gotta be gentle with yourself and go “i had to prioritize [x thing] so i have less energy to spend on reading for fun, and it’s okay that im gonna be slower”

oh also! maybe look @ yr toolkit of pre-reading strategies. before i sit down to read something closely, i skim the abstract, the author bio, the section headings/chapter titles, the bibliography, the end notes, the index. i highlight anything that might be interesting or relevant. this helps give me an overall sense/shape of what im going to be reading. it gives me “anchor points” to tether information to. if you feel like yr rly wading thru mud, maybe u need to practice yr pre-reading strategies (like exercising a muscle, it gets easier to more consistently u do it)

also, you may just be reading something that’s rly hard! we had to read a lot of Elfriede Jelinek and like — she’s difficult to read, and deliberately so as a philosophical/stylistic choice. also, if yr reading a text in translation, i find that browsing a few translations beforehand or asking around which translations my friends like makes such a huge difference. a lot of public domain translations (like the cheap dover thrift editions you can get secondhand rly easily) are ASS when it comes to readability. like i had my Lattimore translation of Oedipus beside one of the public domain ones and it was like night and day in terms of readability.

lastly, idk yr reasons for wanting to read faster, but if it’s something like yr workload for a university course — i would usually email my profs to introduce myself in the summer before term or over winter break. i’d say i’m looking forward to their course & ask politely if they had their reading list on hand bc being able to read in advance made a big difference with how i could keep up with the workload during term time. and also importantly: if i was truly struggling, i would ask myself “is this a normal human being amount of reading to assign? or does this prof have expectations that are not grounded in reality?” bc sometimes the latter is v much the case! and you should just release yrself from putting undue pressure on yrself. try yr best but don’t beat yrself up for something that is an impossible task.

2. How would you describe the Warden's personality before and after the prologue? Did it change much or did they remain the same?

during the prologue, her whole personality is a front. she knows she's being watched, so she tries to present an image of herself (pious, dutiful, meek) that's really far from what she's actually like (analytical, dry, a little mean, passionate abt selective interests & people she cares about). once she clocks how badly they need mages down at ostagar, she dials it up even further. "please don't conscript me duncan, i should rly face the consequences of my actions :(" *

on the other hand even if she is putting up a front here, her choosing to help jowan & knowingly putting herself at risk is the first step towards that pious girl scout mask falling away for good.

*idk if everyone's tried this particular dialogue yet, so i just need to let u know that if you do, knight commander greagoir says he's "glad you still know your place" killing the kinloch templars with hammers :))

5. What are their thoughts on Duncan? How did they feel about his actions during the Joining?

she can't get a read on him which stresses her out.

she clocks that he's eyeing her as a recruit, but she's not actually interested in becoming a warden until jowan shares his plans with her and she realises she'll need a way out of the circle asap. duncan plays into her hands more or less, mostly because it also works for him. he needs a mage. he definitely picks up on what's going on towards the end though, and i think in this worldstate diya probably isn't entirely wrong that duncan has alistair watching over her to keep his shady new warden mage under templar supervision....

as for the joining, she thinks killing jory was pretty brutal and feels like there probably was a way of talking the guy into it. he didn't seem overly bright. she does make a note of duncan being pretty ruthless, but it moreso raises the question for her of if he got the position of warden-commander because he was ruthless, or became that ruthless because of the position. she never really gets to find out!

9. If the Warden was trapped in a nightmare, what would it be like?

getting trapped in a nightmare is a regular occurrence for diya, rip. i talked about this a bit here, but thus is the fate of somniari.

pre-blight, the worst of her recurring nightmares features a demon of rage that often takes the shape of an elven woman, burning in the fires of the alienage purge she witnessed as a child. post-broken circle most of her non-warden nightmares feature her friend qadir amell, turned into an abomination despite his tranquility. post-blight, most of her nightmares feature alistair & the archdemon :)))

really evil, because demons ultimately pull from your own memories. you can remind yourself you're not there anymore, but you can't always defend yourself by telling yourself it isn't real.

11. How did the Warden react to the truth of the werewolf curse?

she's devastated tbh...... but she also gets it. she's not sure she wouldn't have done the same, if not worse. she's honestly a little impressed at how skillfully he's crafted the curse, given her recent experiences in the circle. uldred was a good blood mage. zathrian is clearly much better.

12. Did the warden end Zathrian's curse?

she did. she's kind of gutted, because she'd honestly rather have had his mentorship than lose him to end the curse. she just can't justify it when the curse already has and inevitably will effect more than its intended targets. he could probably have talked her around on it if it were, but it's not a shems-only curse.... sorry zathrian :(

17. What was the Warden's reaction to seeing [insert character] in the Temple of Sacred Ashes?

i bent canon on this one. mostly to make it worse, but also because diya had already conscripted jowan. he's right there at the temple with her, and actually arguing they shouldn't fuck with the ashes (he is still sad abt lily....)

instead, she sees qadir at this temple, who is dead at this point. it fucks her up bad when he tells her she should forgive herself for what happened to him and that he'd forgiven her a long time ago. she does not take this advice :)

the whole thing is really upsetting to her, and it doesn't feel like a spiritual experience at all. it's the exact same feeling as when demons or spirits take the shapes of certain loved ones either to mess with her or to help. whatever their intent, it's intrusive and painful to have those memories dredged up.

19. Who are the people in camp that the Warden is closest with and why?

she's closest with gavin cousland bc out of everyone he's the most empathetic towards her when it comes out that she's been lying the whole time. as an apostate.... he knows something abt what that's like :) this could also have been the case with leliana, but diya's been so hurt by the chantry that leliana sharing her own religious experience (without any intent to influence her) feels hostile to her. this doesn't change until they see each other again during the events of inquisition.

she's actually pretty wary of morrigan at the start bc she thinks she's out to manipulate gavin (and she kind of is.... at first). their relationship warms up later on as she clocks morrigan's whole "oh shit what if i actually like him" mental breakdown.

she gets along swimmingly with zev right from the jump :) she thinks he's really funny, and the two of them are (recreationally) flirting with each other constantly. they're having the time of their lives exhausting their arsenal of pickup lines against eachother. zevran almost sounds like he means it, but diya's just deadpan the whole time which baffles everyone. morrigan's even more alarmed when gavin decides to get in on this bit.

alistair's understandably pretty wary of her for a while after the mask falls. i mean. she blackmails his uncle to pull a maleficar (who poisoned his other uncle!) out of prison. she bribes & pulls backroom deals with unscrupulous templars!!! then it turns out she's a blood mage herself!!!!!! it's really after the brecilian forest where he actually gets to see her real personality come out that he gradually stops seeing her as a dangerous unknown and starts actually liking her.

it's similar on her end with her starting off really wary of her "supervising templar" only to warm up to him as she stops seeing him as a danger to herself and starts seeing him as just... some guy. who's kinda funny. who she might be fond of. but like. just a little. it's not serious or anything.

21. Did the Warden romance anyone from their group? If so, what attracted them to their partner?

well. i don't know that you could call it a romance, with alistair. they were never together. they did both know the feelings were mutual though, i think.

diya never acts on them bc she knows he wouldn't be open to anything not serious & she doesn't think getting involved in sth serious makes sense when either of them could die soon. + what future could they even manage to have if they do manage to live?? she's had devastating crushes on straight girls and survived, she can get over this too. (alistair on the other hand just has the kingship that he's already sort-of accepted he'll have to step up to looming over him. why start something he knows he can't see through?)

they kiss exactly once, atop fort drakon.

that might be a little unfair on alistair's part, but he's about to die. dying men are allowed to be a little selfish, aren't they?

27. How does the Warden feel about what is happening in the Alienage? How do they feel about how elves are treated?

mad doesn't really cover it. she's from the alienage in denerim and had to live through a purge that still haunts her before she got taken to the circle. walking through the alienage when the gates are finally open again is like stepping into an old, familiar nightmare that's no less painful now than it was the first time.

she tears the slavers to shreds, and would have done the same to loghain if she knew it wouldn't have gotten the wardens banned from ferelden for good.

28. During the Landsmeet, who did the Warden choose to rule Ferelden and why? How did they come to that decision?

alistair, because she genuinely does think he'd try to do right by ferelden (elves and mages included). she can't say the same for anora. she knows he'll probably be miserable as king, but she's hoping that she & gavin would be able to support him through it.

she does try to broker a marriage between him and anora, but when it comes time to pick someone to duel loghain, she has to pick alistair. it's the best way to make his case for the crown, and the rest of them are either foreigners or mages. there's no way that wouldn't undermine his rule down the line. after alistair kills loghain, that agreement is dust, and selfishly (stupidly) she's a little glad for it.

31. How does the Warden feel about being a Grey Warden and the sacrifices that entails?

she'd take it over being in the tower, any day. she does see this is a sigh of how bad things are for mages that a slow death sentence is preferable to their normal state of existence though. it's part of what motivates her to leverage her status at the end of the blight to have anora declare the fereldan circle's independence. as for the sacrifices... more on that later.

32. If they could leave the Wardens, would they?

no. never. she wouldn't accept a cure for the calling, even if you handed it to her on a silver platter. she will see this through to the end, even if it means a miserable, ugly death in the deep roads.

33. Who killed the Archdemon and are they still alive?

alistair insisted on being the one to do it because he felt it was his duty to the wardens he outlived, to ferelden, and because he wouldn't have been able to live with it being either diya or gavin instead........ and no, he is not alive.

34. How does the Warden feel about becoming the Hero of Ferelden?

feels sick to her stomach every time someone calls her that. the response is always the same: "the only one who deserves that title died killing the archdemon."

she doesn't like to talk about the blight, not even to reminisce about the better days of it with old friends.

35. How is the Warden's personality like after the events of DAO? Did they change or are they still the same?

it's pretty drastic. she's a hollow shell of a person for the next few months, it's really bad. she stays in denerim for the funeral, the coronation and the arrival of the orlesian wardens, but she can barely take care of herself.

everyone has a little chat about how the hell they're meant to help her, and in the end they decide she should probably get out of ferelden for a while. and it does help! a little! she's never the same and that grief always stays with her, but she's able to function with a little distance from ferelden & the wardens where the reminders were constant.

it's a lot harder when she returns, and her coping mechanisms aren't necessarily the healthiest. one of them does happen to be overworking herself though, and she gets a hell of a lot done. lots of people and places are better off for it, even if she isn't :')

37. Is the Warden still in contact with anyone after the game's events? Are they still with their love interest, if they have one?

ough. well she's not with alistair, unless u count the various spirits and demons taking his shape, either to make it better or worse :(

she does stay in contact with many of the others though. with wynne it's only the occasional letter or two, but gavin's a regular pen-pal. they write as often as they can, and diya tries to plan ahead with leaving him addresses he'll be able to to reach her (and he returns the favour by leaving some hints on how to reach him & morrigan after he goes AWOL from the wardens)

her first trip out of ferelden is to antiva with zevran, partially because it's the closest, but also because everyone thinks having a goal will be good for her. and it is :) killing crows is a great reason to get out of bed :)

after they've done a pretty terrific job of cleaning house in antiva, she finally accepts sten's invitation to come see seheron. she's a little wary of qunari still, but she can't really resist the temptation to see her parents birthplace, and anyway she misses her friend. she ends up finding seheron really interesting (albeit stressful to exist in as a bas-saarebas). it takes her months before she can get any kind of response from her parents' clan after reaching out (because they think she's ben hassrath...) but she does eventually succeed at that too!

leliana and her don't contact each other at all between the temple of sacred ashes & the events of inquisition but diya does surprise her by responding to her missive to the fereldan wardens by showing up there herself. it's a bit wary on both sides to begin with, but they do manage to mend fences while she's there. i don't know if that helps or make things worse when diya does choose to stay in the fade to buy time for the inquisitor.

38. Is there any decision that the Warden regrets? If so, which is it and why? How would they change it?

answered here! to add onto that though, i think she does come to regret killing genitivi a little bit. she let bitterness drive her a bit when it came to the ashes, but with genitivi she was really just trying to stop him from getting the word out. evidently, that didn't work :/

39. Do the events of the Fifth Blight haunt the Warden or have they moved past it completely?

i think bw is very similar whether hilbert or hilda is the protagonist but there are some differences in my head

for example...

i think hilda would be much more aggressive toward team plasma and kinda despised n at first

she went from what is with this weirdo to OH UR THE KING SCREW YOU

after the champion battle she stops hating him though

part of the reason why she disappeared after the events of bw is because she also feels guilty for how mean she was to him

protag hilbert was more friendly to n at first thinking his views were interesting even if he didnt agree

he also hated team plasma hilda just causes more arson

but ya hilbert was more chill with him and enjoyed talking to him at least until he was like oh btw im the king of team plasma and hilbert was like wHAT

while protag hilda becomes more aggressive and angry with n hilbert becomes more scared of him

hilbert is like ohhhhh shoot i promised my friends i wouldnt get too involved with team plasma but got too involved oh shoot oh shoot oh shoot nonononono

when n is like hey i chose you to be the other hero hildas like excuse me what ?????? while hilberts like shoot shoot shootshootshootshoot

on the whole dream thing they have different responses

see hilbert has a dream while hilda doesnt

n asked hilbert if he has a dream and hilbert never really had a dream his whole life but realized then that traveling the world and hopefully become champion kinda are dreams of his and thought about it for a bit and realized huh ig i do

he followed that for the rest of the game (until the horrors settled in)

then with hilda she doesnt have one

she tells everyone before that that her dream is to win the pokemon league but she actually doesnt care that much about it

its a goal shes working towards but not rly a dream

when asks shes about to say that as usual but then shes like. huh. i dont actually. and she finally admits she doesnt have one for the first time, but that she doesnt really mind, she'll figure it out

after chargestone cave hilbert becomes more anxious he puts way more into training he becomes more desperate because THERES AN EVIL CULT AFTER HIM

his dream changes its focus to taking down team plasma

he also starts to distance himself from his friends and sister more from stress which worries them a bit

hilda also ups her training but shes more upbeat and motivated while hilbert is more stressed

also neither of them are very good at being vulnerable so they dont talk much to their friends about how they're feeling lol

hilda starts to be more niceys to n after the conversation with ghetsis on the bridge because shes like oh wait this is awful while hilbert is like YOU

his bad feelings about ghetsis are confirmed and he more than ever wants to take down team plasma

they are both sickened by ghetsis

in the champion battle their feelings are similar

they both get stressed over the fact that they cant afford to lose and they both wanna also make n see the truth

and of course after the battle they are both PISSED at ghetsis

oh and they both equally want to beat ghetsis with a nail bat but i think hilda is more likely to actually have one and do it lol #girl

they both get freaked the heck out by ghetsis trying to murder them who wouldn't this is terrifying

after the battle hilda wants to apoligize to n for being so mean to him because shes kinda chill with him now and also now that hes no longer doing stuff she has no reason to hate him but he leaves before she can say it :(

while hilbert has all these deep lil things he wants to say to him and also wants to ask him if they can be friends but n disappears rip

some time after it finally registers in hilberts brain everything that happened and that one the pokemon league and he starts freaking out over it all and starts getting imposter syndrome over the whole champion thing and books it to go find n

while hilda is overrun with guilt because she didnt get to properly make up with n so she heads out too

i think hilda does a better job at keeping in contact than hilbert does

hilda doesnt do a great job either but at least everyone knows shes ok unlike a certain SOMEONE

oh and if they arent protags hilda spends all her time at the battle subway like hee hee battle

she also loses interest in the league trains are so much better

and hilbert is like hey imma go do some extra training for the league in the subway and by the time he comes back out his sister is traumatized
