I'm going to start writing this as I go because if I wait till the end I'll forget a lot of bits. Okay? Here we go.

I wanna talk about Lockwood & Co. (books and Tv series) and the idea of one's appearance as their armor

Spoilers for the show, and the books (all of them). Read at your own risk. THAT MEANS YOU TAIGA! (iykyk)

So this interest all really started when I finished watching Lockwood & Co. and in my sorrow for not getting another season I turned, as one does, to AO3.

And something I noticed, only two times but that's enough to pique my interest, was writers referring to Lockwood's outfit as his "armor". Most notably when referring to having pieces of it taken away. And that made me super curious. Sure, I could chalk it up to one of the writers saw the other refer to it that way and really liked it and used it themselves, but I'm not inclined to believe that idea because I feel like there's something substantial here. Even if not literally, purposely mentioned as "Lockwood thought of his appearance as his armor", if one analyzes how a character is written, one can find evidence of things like that. And even more so when analyzing the visual media of tv shows, because actors have to communicate so much through body language too. All in all, written and visual media do not do things for the heck of it. There's meaning behind everything.

And another reason for doing this is 1) Lockwood is one of my favorite characters, and Lockwood & Co. is my current obsession, so getting to analyze him and this series would be awesome for me, and 2) it got stuck in my brain and now I want to explore it because if I don't I think I might explode.

I don't know if this is going to be anything at all, but a free ramble pass is a free ramble pass, yaknow? And in my endless need to make everything cool, the ramble is going to be set up like an analysis (perhaps better than my last one, which just devolved into me fangirling over the visuals of a tv show with minimal commentary. And there's nothing wrong with that.) that hopefully makes sense to at least someone.

So let's jump right in. I think I'll start with the show because it is freshest in my mind (I'm in the middle of reading the books right now)

As I'm thinking about this, several things are coming to mind. Firstly, isn't it interesting how much we see Lockwood in his "professional clothes"? Like, and my friend pointed this out when we were watching the show, we nearly never see him in casual clothes like we do Lucy and George. Which sort of works to make him stand out (I may come back to this thought later) among the cast. The most we see is actually at the end of the last episode, when they're all gathered around the kitchen table, where Lockwood is wearing a T-shirt (most probably due to his shoulder injury and it being too much of a hassle, and probably a pain, to put on a collar shirt and tie so he just didn't bother but yaknow). Consequently, this is also the same time when he decides to open up about the bedroom he forbid the others from going into, by showing them what's behind it. Obviously in the show they leave it on a cliffhanger (😡) but in the books they tell you a bit more. So I'm seeing it as 'vulnerable visually = most vulnerability.' Almost all other times when they're at the house, he's wearing his collar shirt and tie, which I believe represents him being more at ease with Lucy and George, and if we follow the armor theory he purposely took off an armor piece (the coat) to show that relaxation. But one could argue "Void, he just doesn't want to wear the coat around the house! You've got nothing here!"

Sure, we can argue that, but I think I've got an answer for that.

Let's take a small peek at the books for a moment. In the opening for The Screaming Staircase (which is nearly perfectly followed by the show, I was impressed) it's mentioned that Lockwood is wearing gloves. They forwent the gloves in the show, probably because it didn't look or work right, but that doesn't really matter here because I'm taking both show and books as relatively identical canon, so stuff in either one can be used for the entire analysis.

Why is he wearing gloves? Well, maybe it's cold. They are after all wearing coats, and it's London, and they imply, by the dead leaves all captured on the porch, that it's fall, maybe late fall. But it's mentioned again, later (find this, I don't remember where.)

And along this idea of gloves, let's glance at the section about his coat. Many places does Lucy mention that it is long, but the one I'm particularly interested in is the scene where they are all together on the last job before Fairfax visits them. George makes the comment "That coat! It's too long! It almost killed you the other night as well." (The Screaming Staircase, 189.)

Lockwood doesn't deem to answer, but it struck me as interesting nonetheless. Why comment that? But most importantly, to me, it seems like George has complained to Lockwood of his long coat being too much a hassle previously, perhaps more than once. Yet, Lockwood keeps the coat. Because it's part of his armor. It's part of his visual identity, and that identity is his defense.

Something else I was thinking about when I woke up today (at this point I've started The Whispering Skull!) is that even when practicing with the rapier, we're lead to believe that Lockwood is not wearing the same casual type of clothes as the others. In the scene, Lucy describes George wearing sweatpants and a sweatshirt, but for Lockwood it's "...sharp fencing slacks and loafers; he'd removed his jacket and rolled up his shirtsleeves a little way." (The Whispering Skull 32)

Curious, I think, is the fact that Lockwood also opens up a bit in this scene. It's not much, but he does speak about his childhood just a little. And it's directly mentioned as such by George to Lucy once Lockwood has left ("I'm surprised he told you as much as he did." 37). So, a removed piece of armor (the jacket) and a little opening up about his past? Seems pretty symbolic to me!

Also, and this is something I JUST thought of. The capes from The Creeping Shadow and The Empty Grave serve as protection (read armor) that is worn.

Even in The Empty Grave (I think it was, it's been a minute since I've read the books) When Lockwood takes Lucy to his family grave, he's got all his armor on. (Now I know a character has to have his iconic design, but trust me fr).

All in all I may be grasping at straws here. BUT I like to think that it was somewhat intentional. All in all (again) I love Lockwood & Co and I am very sad it was cancelled but if you haven't read the books you should still do that.

there's an easy answer here and it's valentino, but luckily he's retired so you can't just go with that cop out. like he definitely wanted to fuck that bike and tbh I'm not sure the 'if they could' caveat even applies here. I fully believe he has fucked that bike

my sense is that he has passed this on to his proteges, who to varying extents do seem like they have all considered fucking a bike. the furthest along this spectrum is bez, who as I understand it has in the past even given his two bikes separate names that can be combined to give the bike's compound name ("I didn't want two different names as that would be like having two girlfriends, which is weird"). this is metaphysically fascinating in many ways, but is also a clear case of someone overthinking things. like, I think if you believe you are in a committed relationship with your racing bike, you do need to treat your bike's 'soul' as something that can transcend the specific bike you are currently riding. when valentino talks about his relationship with the m1, obviously he knows it's not literally the same bike year-to-year, but spiritually it's the same bike. whereas bez is performing odd mental gymnastics here to establish that his two bikes have a unitary soul rather than just, like, accepting that all these bikes have the same soul anyway if he wants them to. bez is the type of guy who wants to fuck his bike but is so hung up on the various philosophical bike-fuck-cuck implications that he never actually manages to fuck it

riders do generally have very weird relationships with their bikes, but it would be too easy to assume they all want to fuck their bikes. with some, there's clearly more of a spiritual identification with the bike, where they see the bike as an extension of themselves. marc is the poster child here: that man does not want to fuck his bike, he thinks he is his bike. both his bike and his body are frequently treated in a distressingly utilitarian manner, where in his mind they exist to fulfil a single purpose, aka 'winning races'. this is how you get him talking about the mechanics fixing the bike and the doctors fixing the body and all that other stuff. it's only been in recent years where, for obvious reasons, he's become a little more aware of how he does actually need to treat his body like a precious resource... but like with the bike, he does still seem pretty ready to repeatedly chuck it in the gravel. despite this apparent lack of care or basic self-preservation instincts, the riders who identify with bikes - who see their souls as one with the bike - don't necessarily have an entirely non-sensual relationship with their bikes... but it's a little different to wanting to fuck their bikes. the sensuality is still there, but the bike and the rider are not distinct units where one can fuck the other. whether you take this to mean that they want to be the bike who is fucked or that there's more of an autosexual situation happening here is up to the reader's interpretation

another interesting question is whether there are some riders who want their bikes to fuck them. I feel like this has to be a thing, though it's a little harder to find explicit evidence here. in some ways, if you set aside the literal order in which bike and rider are arranged, some of the dynamics of riding a bike would lend itself to an interpretation that being attracted to a bike is more about being fucked by the bike than fucking it. this raises another interesting question - and it's whether it's the process of riding a bike in itself that is arousing, or whether the attraction comes from something different. now, to return to our best case study: my sense is that for valentino, he primarily does want to fuck that bike... and it's not necessarily the riding itself that's really doing it for him. it's a very romantic connection, it's about being enamoured with this partnership they've forged and the mutual promise and potential therein. he's in love with winning on that bike, he's in love with what the two of them can achieve together. this isn't about the literal process of approaching a corner on an m1... valentino is at his most attracted to his bike after he has just won on it. here he is stroking his bike after phillip island 2004 (where he sealed his first yamaha title by beating sete in a last lap duel) and laguna 2008, and also him kissing his bike after catalunya 2009

yes, he wants to fuck the bike, but he is a romantic. riding the bike to victory is the wining and dining; the fucking comes later

the last metric I wish to bring in is the need to feel desired by the bike. this is an ego thing, right... the partnership with the bike at the point of victory flatters the ego. the harmonious and productive relations between rider + partner reflects well on them; it bags them a bunch of lovely things from everyone around them like 'appreciation' and 'affection' and 'praise'. thus the bike also reflects on the rider... both in terms of the attractiveness of the bike to the world at large (making it function as a trophy spouse of sorts) and in terms of the quality of the bond between rider and bike. being wanted by the best bike is particularly flattering - but the most important thing is to be wanted at all. I would posit that this is part of what's going on with jorge martin's whole deal, a man who desperately needs to be praised and wanted. the aprilia's no ducati, but at least he's its first choice, y'know. my belief is that jorge martin wishes to be wined and dined by that bike

in conclusion, I would like to propose a basic way of assessing what flavour of sensual relationship the rider has with the bike:

my belief is that most (if not all) riders fall somewhere in this triangle. you have the freaks like marc who are very close to the top and you have the freaks like valentino who are very close to the bottom and probably skew hard left. others are perhaps a little more versatile in their preferences. I don't feel like I have sufficient information to sort all the riders to the correct spot of the triangle, but I hope the general construct holds up. that is all

People complaining about Tsukasa5 already are pissing me off, because like, it's so unbelievably obvious what this event is trying to do and the fact that people are so hung up on "urgh dur tsukasa strong why can't he do a wall climb".

Like, first of all, a lot of Tsukasa's strength has been used as comedy before and also it's never been said that Tsukasa could specifically do a wall climb before so people calling this a retcon or a stretch is really dumb to me.

Sure we can make jokes about it, but this is not like a serious writing problem or anything.

Also are we just gonna ignore the fact this event is literally just a reference to his 3rd event in a silly trenchcoat. Or the fact that this is obviously meant to be WxS's downtime and training arc to prepare them to face the loose plotpoints in the future?

His inner dialogue when chasing the ninja is very clearly a reference to the whole Pheonix thing, how he can't reach it no matter how hard he tries.

The wall climb is like an extremely fucking on the nose metaphor to him climbing over his issues as an actor.

THERE IS ALSO THE WHOLE THING THAT HINTS THAT TSUKASA CAN ONLY OVERCOME HIS PROBLEMS IF HE HAS HELP FROM OTHERS (AKA tsukasa would've literally BEEN INJURED, if it wasn't for the fact the troupe's leader was there).

In fact this literally followed an event aka Tsukasa 4 where he FAILED to do his role correctly.

It's almost like this event is meant to be a transition point between Tsukasa 4 and 6, where Tsukasa builds up the knwoledge on how to face his problems.

But no this is just mid event because it's very silly and "wow plot is stupid why can't tsukasa wall climb".
