Trying to imagine how the conversation might go when Kea tells Y'Shtola that we'll effectively be helping to determine the next ruler of Tural. I think up to now the Scions have been avoiding taking explicit political action. The closest we've gotten was in Stormblood when we helped Doma and Ala Mhigo free themselves from Imperial control. Dawntrail is a member of the royal family saying 'Hello, I am Wuk Lamat. The Dawnservant is planning on stepping down and has given us permission to choose other people to help us fight to become the next leader of Tural'
Tumblr media
"Kea, dearest... are you certain of this?", Y'shtola's voice came cautiously, hesitant - a far cry from her regular air of certainty.
"I don't see why not - she seems nice enough, and her heart's in the right place.", Kea shrugged. A friend of a friend had asked for help, and Krile had a mystery she wanted solved. Sounded like the start of a good adventure.
"Still, we Scions have sought to remain politically neutral for a reason..."
"All the better to uphold the fiction that we've disbanded, no?"
"--Not to mention how it might open the floodgates for people to swarm you with petitions that you support this or that agenda."
"You know well as I that already happens, love." It felt like they were dancing around the topic at hand, rather than just taking it head-on... and Kea was pretty sure Y'shtola knew it, too. "Come now, what is it that's actually bothering you?"
Y'shtola paused, looking intently at her, before finally continuing. "...I worry that we may come to act cross purpose. Opposed."
Kea frowned. She couldn't deny that the possibility had occurred to her - as an Adventurer, it was inevitable to sometimes find yourself on the opposite side of some of your fellows, sometimes even friends, by sheer circumstance. Though the risk for it happening was far less with her fellow Scions...
"I suppose it'd be down to whose convictions are strongest...", Kea breathed, almost more to herself.
"Kea...", Y'shtola's voice carried that 'please take this seriously' expression perfectly without Kea even needing to look up to see it.
"I mean it.", but that was the thing - she was serious. Most Adventurers she knew, including herself, had found themselves in fights they didn't want, against opponents they didn't wish any harm upon.
It was a lot like two matched predators meeting in the wild, having an elaborate dance gauging each other's strengths and weaknesses, neither necessarily able to afford a straight up fight, but also neither necessarily willing to yield. As much as it might look like conflict, it was more of a negotiation to avoid one.
"I trust you to do what you believe is right. Even... even if that might see us pursuing opposing goals. I don't want to fight you, Shtola - I love you, more than anything. But if neither of us can convince each other with words alone... what can we do but to let our actions, and our convictions, speak for us?"
Kea wasn't sure what it might take for her to sway Y'shtola once she had truly set her mind on something, nor what it might take for Y'shtola to convince her in similar circumstances... but she was certain it would have to be something weighed in actions, rather than words.
"If one person can remain as they are despite their heart and mind acting in opposition... can our hearts not remain aligned even should our goals diverge?"
And if I were to fall astray, there is none I would rather trust to help me find my way.
Y'shtola let out a sigh, and a laugh, gently shaking her head. "I trust you realize I would not hold back, were it to come to that."
"Of course", Kea replied with a grin. "I'd feel a mite disappointed if you did."

Prison in the world of Cars
So Im currently in the process of writing chapter 8 of Behind Blue Eyes and said chapters' content has got me thinking about the various minutiae of prison systems within this universe. Here is my take on it.
Speed restrictors - In order to prevent any kind of escape attempt, speed restrictors would be fitted to inmates with a high flight risk to prevent any speed being reached above about thirty miles per hour. In some cases, it could be deemed necessary to decrease speed potential even further for the most dangerous offenders. But the use of these devices comes with a significant quantity of government regulation to prevent their misuse. The fitting of restrictors can cause engine issues in the long run and shouldn't be used without prior approval from a court.
Parking boots - Wheel cuffs. I needn't say much more than that. No moving for you! They can be used on both front wheels, both back wheels or all four wheels depending on requirement. But one or three parking boots should never be utilised as this can cause serious damage to the detainee if they were to try and drive.
Extension restraints - For particulary strong and violent offenders, axle extension restraints can be applied. Parking boots are the go-to for prisoner transport, which are heavy and cumbersome. But for strong vehicles who want to get a few punches in, the use of parking boots can be particularly hazardous to police officers. So these restraints can be utilised to prevent any damage to other vehicles or property that could be caused by the detainee.
Deep tread tyres - It would be damaging to a vehicle to force them to roll around on tyres with deliberately low pressure. So to increase drag for inmates, a thicker tyre tread is used. This has the added bonus of reducing the amount of replacements required during sentence duration, thus cutting down on costs. Although the tyres used increase the vehicles ability to grip into the floor and push or pull, the officers that respond to any issues with the prisoners within their care are usually able to subue them rapidly and effectively. Prison tyres are ugly and not comfortable to drive on.
Chemically engineered paint - With technological advancements and genius chemical engineering, the paint used on inmates is very specific and can be picked up from quite a distance away with the use of police scanners. It holds its own unique chemical formula that lights up like a christmas tree when scanned with the appropriate digital equipment. The colour is also utilised as a tell-tale sign as it is a highly distinctive and vibrant orange; the only orange paint of its kind. This paint can only be purchased for prisons, by prisons. To be in possession of this paint without the appropriate licensing carries both a hefty fine and a prison sentence. So if an unlicensed vehicle is caught with it, they will very quickly be wearing it. The chemical does, however, hold the unfortunate capacity to seep into and embed itself into the surface of metal through layers of paint, meaning that, even if a vehicle is released and repainted (repainted on the offenders dime might I add), they will still be picked up on police scanners. This leads them to be regularly stopped and questioned by police officers. This can be incredibly irritating to both parties, however it does allow officers to keep an eye on offenders that are on probation. Vehicles that are permitted to be external to the prison whilst on remand are sprayed with just the traceable chemical component of the paint, which is invisible to the naked eye. A small stencil is utilised in the form of the sigil of the police force that made the arrest. This makes them traceable to police, but prevents civilians from seeing that said vehicle could be facing criminal charges. For those that can afford the expensive procedure, this chemical is removeable by removing all layers of paint and primer and grinding down the surface layer of the bare metal. This can be painful, so a general anaesthetic is provided.
Fuel quantity control - As previously displayed in the first cars movie, fuel quantity is important when you want to try and escape from the cruel clutches of community service. The same principal can apply in prisons. Fuel intake is heavily regulated and no inmate is usually permitted any more than 1/8 to 1/6 of a tank at any time. There are exceptions to this in regards to specific jobs that inmates perform as some will require larger quantities to perform their duties. Which is usually met with seething envy.
GPS locators - This method is even more heavily restricted than the use of speed restrictors as it violates multiple data protection laws and vehicle rights legislation. However, in the correct circumstances, it can be very useful. This is only ever used for vehicles that are both incredibly dangerous and have a high flight risk.
Remote engine inhibition - A vehicles engine can be shut down at the push of a button after modifications to the programming of the ECU have been made. This method of inmate control is incredibly new and still in its theoretical stages and thus it is still being debated whether or not it is viable and vehmane. Considering its highly intrusive nature and possibly damaging consequences to both the escapee and the general public, if it were ever to pass into legislation, its useage would be very rare indeed.
Medical care - Each vehicle within the prison system must have a three monthly check up with a desigated mechanic and all new inmates must be checked once a week for the duration of three months. Considering high depression rates within prison systems, a lot of vehicles, especially first time offenders, will stop consuming oil due to stress. This can lead to sickness and fever/overheating, which causes severe issues in the long run.
Not all of the above restraint/tracking methods will be used in all cases as it will depend highly on sentencing requirements for specific individuals and the type of prison that they end up in.
I might update this at a later date if I think of anything else to add. But so far, this is all I've got.
In a nutshell, its INSANELY difficult for any vehicle to escape a prison. So Miles Axelrod is pretty fucked.

Bleach’s Issue with Queer characters (3/3)
[1][2][3]
Tumblr media
So then there’s Giselle (and to a less canon extent Shutara) who I think Kubo erroneously categorizes as similar to both eachother and to the above gay men stereotypes.  And I think understanding Kubo’s approach to Giselle hinges on what he set up (but didn’t follow through on) with Shutara.
Tumblr media
I’ve mentioned before, but I’m pretty certain think Shutara Senjumaru is meant to be a kabuki onnagata*.  Not in-world, mind you; I don’t think she is somehow employed as an actor in a literal kabuki theater. (i would hope that was obvious, but one can never be too sure...)  Just like Tier Harribel isn’t literally a light skinned, dark haired person doing gyaru/ganguro fashion, her presumably naturally tan skin and blonde hair is based on the general aesthetic.  Shutara likewise is channeling distinct look and feel that draws from a mix of oiran, geisha, and kabuki aesthetics. (granted all three are closely related in influencing one another’s aesthetics in the first place)
But while the look and even the demeanor tend to play all three ways, I think the particular fixation on clothes, costuming, and the somewhat adjacent theme of “disguise” that Kubo has shown to put emphasis on in this kinds of situations, as well as the fact that he gave her a distinctly masculine name, Senjuumaru, point to her being some form of queer, albeit something Kubo seems to pretty clearly lack the understanding to better articulate himself.  Is she a trans woman?  Gender fluid?  A male identifying transvestite?  There’s not enough real material for us to draw that particular line, but I don’t think it’s a stretch to conclude that she’s not a cis woman.
*Kabuki is traditionally an all-male theater form, and “onnagata” refers to actors who specialize in playing women roles.  Generally all actors train in the delineated masculine and feminine styles, but an actor’s career sticks to just one or the other...
Tumblr media
...There is a whole big thing about how cultural institutions like kabuki and takarazuka theaters’ creation of socially acceptable and even celebrated, public and professional genderqueer spaces creates a myriad of gender dynamics that just don’t exist in the West, and it’s something that has made the attempt to adopt a globalized understanding of queer identity a little trickier in Japan:
In the West the gender binary was rigidly enforced such that to explore alternatives was basically uncharted territory (that’s an oversimplification, but you know what I mean; There’s a lack of contiguity with those who came before) but with japan there were already nonbinary spaces in place, and the lines around those don’t neatly line up with the ethnocentric western ideas some people try to pigeonhole those into.  In general, it gets dangerously close to just flat up colonizer rhetoric.
Tumblr media
(forgive the outdated reference image, but honestly I don’t know what even counts as a recognizable example of a “““trap””” character these days.  And I use that term with GREAT reluctance, but I want to differentiate the exploitative cliche usage of a trans caricature from any actual representational trans character.)
(ya know what, let me pull these out of the tags because not everyone is seeing this from my original post and obviously the context has changed around bridget since i wrote this... #geez this thing is so old that bridget wasn’t even reintroduced to guilty gear yet #in fact strIVe wasn’t even a thin on the horizon this far back)
Anyway...  That all just leaves Giselle.  And let’s be real, there’s no excuse for this one.  Maybe that seems like a weird anticlimactic place to take this series of posts... like, after all this, maybe it feels like I should’ve had some equally obtuse logic to explain this one away as a matter of escalation or as a Rule of Threes.  But no, not really.  I just think it’s a little unreasonable to treat the massive screwup that was Giselle’s portrayal as part of some sort of bigger ongoing trend, when it’s really more of an unrelated outlier in a bigger umbrella subject.
She is in fact a bad case of the long standing anime/manga fetishization of transwomen as a concept, as a spectacle to be gawked at and made the butt of jokes or to be included specifically as an anomaly.  And in Giselle’s case her specific depiction as a depraved, physically/sexually abusive villain on top of that is an explicitly toxic combination.
In spite of that, I still don’t think Kubo actually meant for it to reflect poorly (not that that matters or diminishes its harmfulness) I think he genuinely just has no real grasp of what that kind of characterization means.  I say that largely because of the way he treats a lot of her role in the plot.  Not that she’s integral to moving it forward, but that she occupies space and survives in the plot as long as she does, even when she could've been conveniently (and frankly more neatly) written out;
He seems to like drawing her and gives her a range of expressions and gestures (something he doesn't afford all his characters, even some of his major ones)
He likes to expand on her powers and gimmicks beyond what was necessary if he'd been aiming for minimum effort
He even paired her off against his personal favorite character, Mayuri.
Point being, Kubo seems to personally like Giselle as a character, but he took a horrible insensitive and ignorant path in writing her character.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But an undeniable fact is, she’s not alone as this kind of villain, she’s just the only one that happens to be trans.*  Mayuri himself, Aaroniero, Szayelaporro, Zomarri (just a little bit), Tousen (at the very end), Tsukishima, As Nodt, Gremmy (a little), and Askin all to some degree dip into this shtick Kubo does where his villains aren’t just sadistic but ecstatically so, to the point of intoxicated, gleeful derangement.  Yet in spite of that, those characters are all usually meant to be “cool,” not detestable.
Remember, Mayuri was initially written as, hands down, the most despicable characters in Bleach —he was abusive and sadistic, misogynistic, actually physically grotesque, predatory, dishonorable sneaky & underhanded, complicit in a genocide, just in general a clearly communicated mad scientist villain, and he was all of this in direct and deliberate contrast to Uryuu’s chivalrous personality type(already established in his defending Orihime from Jiroubou) as well as Nemu’s noble stoic subservient victimhood— and yet he’s also Kubo’s favorite character in the series.  Kubo doesn’t actually write Giselle any particularly worse than the others, BUT he also doesn’t disassociate her being trans from her being villainous, and again, even incidentally, that manages to perpetuate a harmful narrative in the overall.
*(Actually, I’ve kinda touched on it before but I sort of suspect Mayuri could be trans, in which case; OOPS, that makes two, and that doesn’t make it better....)

I would love to see you draw a scene from my rewrite!
Any scene that makes you feel inspired to draw it at all, can be between Asha and Aster or between Asha and the royals or Aster with the royals, whatever you feel more inclined to
(I’m kinda bad at being specific with art requests because I wanna make sure the artist is drawing something they wanna do lmao)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hehe I had fun with this
This is a scene from “Kingdom of Wishes” Chapter 12– Magic Pencil btw 👍
Notes under the cut
So I was reviewing the official designs for Asha and Aster and realized I was drawing Asha’s hair wrong. Oops. So I drew her “correct” hair in her past version. Amazigh girls usually get their first tattoos during puberty, that’s why I didn’t draw Asha with hers yet.
Also I know Aster didn’t conjure up a little Asha in the story, but I wanted to draw past Asha. Got any guesses from where I got little Asha’s outfit from?
The glowing eyes of Aster’s… yeah they look a bit creepy. Idk. It’s a cop-out for drawing hands bc they are the worst Disney villain ever, so this way I don’t have to draw hands

something something Molly Blyndeff who was forced into the role of an adult and wants to get out of that role, who wants to live as a child and go to school and hang out with her friends,
vs Sylvie Ashling, who presumably put himself in the role of an adult and got a degree in psychology, who doesn't like being treated like a child despite actually being one and would prefer to be considered an adult
idk just . parallels. things i noticed i guess
