before meeting you, rafe had never taken his love life seriously. sure, he had dated girls here and there, but he had always broken off things with them before they got too unnecessarily attached.

then you happened.

you were there, at the bonfire, looking all pretty and clueless under the light of the incandescent flames, and he just had to talk to you. he had no idea that that hunch that made him walk over to you would result in more than just a simple exchange of words.

you spend hours and hours talking that night, and it felt strange to him. he didn't have the urge to take to his bed for a ephemeral sexual encounter. no. it was as if something inside of him clicked when you both say your goodbyes and promised to see each other some other day.

soon, the first date came. then the second. and the third. he had found in you a place of comfort, or relaxation, things that he had faked for the longest time. talking to you, hearing you laugh, admiring your pretty smile—not so subtlety, watching the sunset together, having a drink, or even spending time with you in silence had become his favorite activities.

randomly one day, he felt that pinch in his chest, right where the heart is, at seeing you in the distance as you made your way to him. there and then, he realized that he loved you. he loved you. you had taught him how to love, how it felt to be truly loved.

rafe's far from perfect, and he knows that more than well. but to you, he's someone who deserves to be loved and taken care for. you had given him a chance and made him feel seen, as if you understood his intricate mind. he can't say he doesn't panic. he sometimes does, mostly when he thinks of the chance of fucking it all up and hurting you—accidentally, of course.

but as he now holds you close to him, thinking of the the enigmatic concept of love, he promises to you in a tiny whisper in your ear that he will protect you against all odds, even himself.
