Ive been rewatching vrains and ive only gotten up to episode 87 so idk for sure, but I remember the stuff with lightning and jin the same way and yeah, its such a shame that its like that. Alternatively to what you said, if you wanted to go down a route where lightning was initially well-intentioned in his own fucked up way, maybe when he caused jins breakdown he was doing it with the logic of "being here and being aware of his situation is causing him to suffer so I'll do whatever I can to shut his awareness down and thatll be better" or something like that. Maybe the implication is that before the Ignis developed their personalities they were these purely logic-driven beings, and that could show the issues with 'pure logic' and how acting without consideration for emotions can cause major problems

100% agree with all the free will stuff, I feel like even though they say that free will is the thing that makes the Ignis truly living beings, free will as a theme is not really explored with the kind of depth that it should be. I also feel like theres not enough of a distinction made between the Ignis and the other super advanced AIs that exist in this world. Like, Roboppi is obviously not the same as the ignis but the way I see it, thats mostly because they werent made in the same way (like bohman and haru arent really ignis either) but in terms of cognitive ability, theyre functionally on par with humans just like Ignis are, theyre just less experienced, kind of like a child. Or I guess a better way to put that would be, I feel like theres not enough attention drawn to the fact that ignis and other AIs which are supposedly less advanced are so fundamentally similar

On a similar note, this is something that Ive been thinking about a lot recently, I feel like theres not enough attention drawn to the similarities between humans and ignis beyond the free will and maybe their capacity to form connections and feel things. Its like, the thing that makes humans different from other animals is our ability to not be 'controlled' by our feelings and bodily instincts the way that animals often are; we just work a bit different psychologically and that puts us on a level above animals (which is a very human-centric way to think about it obviously but you know what i mean). The Ignis were meant to be next level and they basically position themselves as such because they dont have physical needs – which kinda makes sense because like, if the thing that puts humans above animals is our ability to ignore our physical needs and excercise 'true free will', then Ignis should be even better because they dont have physical needs to ignore in the first place, but theyre not. And thats because otherwise theyre psychologically literally the exact same as humans and you can see that very clearly when you look at the virtual worlds they build to be their homes. Like, why do they build buildings to act as their homes when theyre in these virtual worlds which they made an have full control over? They dont have bodily needs so they dont need a bed, a bathroom and whatever else you have in a house, and they dont need the protection that a house would offer them because again, these are their own worlds that they have full control over, theres nothing in them that could be a true danger to them; the need that these homes fulfill is a purely psychological and irrational one - one that they inherited from humans. Thats so interesting to me and it kills me that they never really do anything with that!

Also yeah, its wild that we never really get any pre-lost incident backstory stuff for Yuusaku, especially considering that bit during his duel with Spectre where he was like "If the lost-incident traumatized you then you probably had a good life before being kidnapped" and its like, idk, did he have a good life? I guess we'll never know

yuusaku has so many reasons to be so mad at dr kogami but one that i feel is underrated is that he ended up making it his life mission to destroy the ignis after all that. like, imagine you got kidnapped as a child to this facility where you got tortured with electricution and starved alongside six other kids all so that this fucking guy can create a sentient ai to evolve humanity and he succeeds in doing that, but then he watches some simulations that foretell the ai bringing doom upon humanity and he completely changes his mind about it just like that. You are using the term asexuality as a sexual identity, something seperate from biology. I'm not viewing Mudokons as "biologically" an entire sexual identity in the same way I'm not viewing all humans as one specific sexual identity. Because things aren't black and white like that. I don't think Mudokon workers are all by default aroace because they don't reproduce in the same way that I know not all humans are heterosexual because that's how we're expected to reproduce. We're more than just our anatomy.

Alf clarifies that the only Mudokons with definitive sexes are Drones and Queens, similar to males and females in human terms. Alf also notes that Mudokon workers don't adhere to human gender norms; they're considered genderless, and the use of he/him pronouns is simply for convenience—"just because," as he says.

In biological terms, asexual reproduction is a process where a single parent produces offspring without the fusion of gametes. Going into this, it's worth noting that honey bee symbolism is prevalent in Mudokon culture—Royal Jelly is even an item in Soulstorm. In beehives, worker bees are female but don't undergo sexual development. They can't mate but can sometimes lay infertile eggs that become male drones. These workers are, in biological terms, asexual. By the same logic, Mudokon workers are biologically asexual: they aren't meant to reproduce, and they don't need to mate at all because they lack reproductive organs and therefore have no sperm. But that doesn't mean they're like Ken dolls down there, anatomically blank; they're evolved from bird-like creatures. Could they lay eggs? Maybe, maybe not. What’s important to remember is that Mudokon slaves are utterly sexually repressed. OWI has stated this themselves. They're forbidden from any form of sexual education or sexual media. They don’t know their origins, don't know their mothers, don't even fully understand their own bodies. Saying they must be incapable of experiencing attraction just because we've never seen them kiss onscreen is absurd. Alf himself has made it clear that he experiences attraction. Lorne Lanning, the creator of Oddworld, has even said he considered giving Abe a girlfriend in the past—and confirmed that worker Mudokons can experience desires like romance and attraction because it's necessary for some of them to eventually develop into Drones. So it's not far-fetched at all to imagine Mudokon workers being romantic or sexual sometimes. In fact, given how deeply their lives have been controlled and suppressed, it makes sense to want them to have that freedom—to explore their feelings, identities, and experiences that were denied to them their entire lives.

On a personal note, as many of my followers know, I actually headcanon Abe as being on the AroAce spectrum. I think he's Grey-AroAce. I don’t see him as sex-repulsed—more like someone who just doesn’t really get the appeal of it. I think he's capable of romance but highly prioritizes platonic and familial love. Asexuality is a spectrum, just like any sexuality. People have preferences. Labels aren't rigid "rules" someone has to follow to the letter. An AroAce person doesn't stop being AroAce just because they try relationships. Sometimes gay people date girls before realizing they’re gay. Sometimes people are convinced they're straight until they realize they're bisexual. Exploration and growth are natural and are unironically part of character growth.

And when you really think about it: Mudokon slaves have no understanding of sexuality at all. Abe wouldn’t even know what being AroAce means at first, or even how to recognize feelings like attraction. His self-discovery would take time, experience, and freedom—something he never had under Glukkon rule (and frankly something he doesn't even have as the Messiah!). To immediately slap a strict human label on him and other slaves based solely on his repression is unfair. Come on, dude.

Let the Mudokons figure themselves out. Let's not slap a strict label with rules to follow on an entire species, please? They deserve that chance. They may be aliens, but they're as sentient if not more sentient than human beings.

Because there's a lot of interesting concepts in this issue (bruce having to deal with his rapidly aging and decaying clone making him think about his own life, re-establishing a 'nest' so to speak for his family after pushing them away, etc) but bc of the OOC slog that came before it, almost every moment w/ the batfamily comes off as unearned and disingenuous imo.

Like, everything with Damian is the perfect example in this. Because in isolation it's...fine. admittedly it's a missed opportunity to not go deeper into how Damian would feel about a clone of his dad who tried to kill considering Damian's relationships with clones of himself (the heretic rejects and respawn) or with former enemies who wanted him dead but who were manipulated and/or brainwashed (like suren and maya).

Zdarsky doesn't go into any of this but you could maybe excuse it as the issue not being about Damian. However, coupled with the previous bizarre characterizations of Damian in 147 and 148, it ends up not being fine- instead it starts to feel...icky how Damian (who, despite often being drawn and written as white, will never have his connection to the non-white al ghuls forgotten and will always be effected by racism even when not portrayed as a poc) is constantly written as overly violent, uncaring and narrow minded in this run. Coupled w/ trying to recanonize the morrison origin for Damian it's like. OH this is badly written and laden with subtle bigotry, sick**

That's me going into detail on it with Damian but it's applicable to other things in this issue- the way Cass, Steph and Duke have all been ignored or turned into jobbers makes their inclusion in the 'family' here feel hollow instead of satisfying. Bruce proclaiming that Zur was still a part of him and he needs to accept responsibility for his actions (when it means taking in clone son) wrings hollow when just last issue zdarsky was bending over backwards to separate Bruce and Zur bc otherwise the Jason thing would get really awkward. Ends are achieved through means that feel hollow or strange. I'm at my destination but damn why'd the bus have to do all that???

I only really have opinions on this latest arc of zdarskys Batman bc it's the one I've read the closest (bc I'm a hater, masochist and avid follower of even the bad damian storylines) but it's not saying great things.

Bc zdarsky can do one thing good in this book, and it's write Bruce and Tim. And yet this entire story, whether of his own volition or editorial mandate, includes other characters who aren't Bruce and Tim, the fabric starts to unravel in very telling ways.

(p.s, I think pennyworth manor is an interesting idea but I feel like in execution it's just gonna be 'bruce living in a house haunted by the memory of the people he couldn't save' but with a different dead guy this time. Illusion of change and whatnot)

*whether or not the ending is good is up to you ofc, as is your opinion on the proceeding arc! I saw some ppl complain that the ending was too "WFA" for them, which I get even if I dont think it'll literally be the same premise. If anything it's probably a lead into the new tec run. Likewise many ppl who aren't in the weeds of Damian and Jason characterization liked the previous arc! But I have my opinions and rest my case before the bench

my take on the localised names thing is that eustace winner is actually a better name, it clearly shows his obsession with being the best while also showing hes a loser, and the name that should be getting hate but doesnt because its established since the first game is miles edgeworth. its completely random and the only part they managed to keep was 'edge' as in swords have edges which is a bit pathetic when you think about it

on one hand i think it should be mostly games with Actual intentional lgbt rep and themes being tagged as lgbt because tagging a bunch of random games as that makes it harder for people wanting representation to find what they're looking for. and ive also seen a lot of people who dont know how steam tags work spreading misinformation or getting their hopes up for nothing because of people tagging random games as lgbt . but on the other hand i think every new sonic game that comes out being tagged as lgbt on steam is hilarious . sonic lgbt icon forever
