#i dont know how exact the comparison is

so in an attempt to actually use positive thinking, anytime i fuck up and my brain reacts as if ive cause a minor apocalyptic event, i compare my fuck up to the 4 minute fuck up committed by the crew of the uss william d porter.

and only today, as i was having to explain what happened to my mom when i was explaining the whole comparison thing, did i realise that most people dont know about it and ive decided that needs to change because its objectively hilarious.

...which is a weird thing to say about an event that occured on a warship in 1943, specifically november 14th.

see the uss william d porter was a fletcher-class destroyer but you dont need to know what that means, just that she had guns that went bang bang and that she was escorting another ship, the uss iowa, to cairo.

while they were on their way there, they performed some gun trials like testing the anti-aircraft guns or the torpedos. and while they were running a torpedo drill, the crew of the porter managed to fire a live torpedo straight at the iowa which you know, in terms of a list of things to do while escorting a ship, shooting a torpedo at them is not on that list.

especially if the president of the united states is on board.

yeah so fdr was on board and the gun trials were actually his idea, and part of the trials was that they were conducted under radio silence.

and that means the crew of the porter couldnt just call the iowa to be like "move out the way, we accidentally shot a torpedo at you."

but they did have signal lamps and you know, the signalman on board was trained to signal this exact kind of message.

...and uh never mind, the signalman did manage to successfully tell the iowa that a torpedo was coming toward them but wasnt as successful when it came to the direction the torpedo was coming from.

not all hope is lost though because the signalman could still use the signal lamp to correct his previous mistake and-, never mind, he announced that the porter was reversing, which she wasnt.

yeah so at catastrophic mistake number 3, they broke radio silence to warn the iowa and she managed to turn out of the way just in time which meant no one got hurt. and even though the inquiry into the incident led to chief torpedoman (fantastic job title btw) lawton dawson being sentences to hard labour, fdr intervened and waved away his sentence, saying it was all an accident.

but yeah, so thats my new measure for "how much did i really fuck up?" and when i compared accidentally picking up a pencil case without a tag on it in wilko, turns out it was a very minor fuck-up. yes, the cashier had to ask another worker to grab a duplicate so they could scan the barcode, but i didnt nearly kill the president during wartime via accidental friendly fire

Do you have any insecurities wih writing? I dont think I can ever write eventhough I want to because of my own insecurities, and I thought of asking my fave authors this question to see if you feel the same way I do. Your writings make me happy btw.

it's natural to have insecurities when it comes to what we create imo, there's always going to be some level of comparison no matter how hard we try to suppress it. i think this is especially true when you're getting into it (or returning after a long break). a majority of the time, what we see of other people's work is the polished final iteration. we don't get to see the hours of brainstorming, rewrites, and little edits behind each story. it's important to keep that in mind so you don't compare your first few go rounds against a project in a vastly different stage of completion.

regarding my own writing, i'm aware of the areas where i lack (like writing action sequences), but i've never seen the point in dwelling on it. this is a hobby, i know that if i aimed for perfection, i'd only frustrate myself and never get anything done. it's been said before but it bears repeating: writing something is better than writing nothing.

what i also find helps is that what i'm writing is very self-indulgent GJENRK i want to see the ideas i have in mind brought to life. only you can fully realize those concepts floating around in your noggin. writing is like a fingerprint, wholly unique to the individual. no one else has shared your exact set of life circumstances so no one else can flesh out a story the way you would. i think that's really cool and it's why i encourage anyone with an interest in writing to go for it!!

A (probably) speculative question, if you dont mind.

Do you know how many miles long the Rainbow Bridge is from it's starting point in the city/palace to it's end point at Himinbjorg?

I read on the wiki that in the MCU, Asgard is about the size of the continental United States, which made me realise we see only a fraction of it on film. And that got me thinking about the dimensions of the city. And the population and where they live. We know so little about Asgard.

First, let's take a look at the view from Himinbjorg AND the palace:

As you can see, The Rainbow Bridge is very long and Himinbjorg is so far away it looks like a mere dot. When in reality, the structure itself is massive. Here you can see Heimdall standing inside for size comparison. The bridge is also quite wide.

Now, let's look at Valaskjalf: The palace is ginormous (these pillars right here are chambers, as seen in the scene where Frigga fights with Malekith- one of them is hers, and they can be barely seen when looking from the city's borders)

The entrance in the lower middle used to be the throne room before they moved it higher up and that is a great example of how big the halls are

Now for the entrance gate-

As you can probably tell by now, the gate is outside the city.

While I cannot give you the exact number as it is not stated anywhere (not even in norse mythology) and I don't plan on spending my morning calculating how long a horse is and how many would fit lol, I think this is a good way of seeing just how big Asgard is. Remember, the realm is much bigger than the city. There are mountains surrounding it which were not really shown or explored apart from some brief scenes in Ragnarok (but I prefer to not treat that movie as canon on anything else but the look of the realm)

It is I, the one who makes the analysis posts on various comics on the internet. (With permission course) Because I love doing them and they bring me joy.

If you are unaware of what Sacred Realm is, it's a Legend of Zelda AU about a new Link who gets a little medallion that makes him a badass, also it can hold the spirits of heroes from across the realms (Including my fave boy ever okay)

Before I begin, I'll get the important stuff done, This is done with permission from @zelda-the-sacred-realm, and all art from the comics belongs to the comic artist. Please do me a favour and go and check it out because it's a wonderful comic and extremely well-drawn and written.

Okay, so here is when it gets interesting.

Possessed Link or this entity I suppose, referring to Time and in turn Hylians as 'Your Race' Tells me a couple of things.

This thing in the medallion isn't a Hylian spirit. So as much and as fun as a dark link theory is, I dont think it could be.

Time arguing that we're not perfect, again referring to Hylians sounds very much like an "I'm speaking with a god speech"

I present my theory on what is in the medallion.

An extra spirit, a god of some description, from the spirit realm. Out to get revenge on Hylians.

Time has been to the spirit realm, in his games. (I am under the assumption that those still occur in this canon please do correct me if I'm wrong here.)

I'm convinced that this thing in the medallion is a deity of some kind because of the eye colour. I can't get over it.

You know those scenes in video games when you're fighting off something that's trying to possess you and you have that ominous-sounding echo that seems to reverberate through your head. But is also muffled at the same time?

These five panels tell so much when it comes to how much effort Link has to go through to fight off the medallion possession. I wonder if its going to be easier or harder for him to fight it off as he gains spirits in the medallion.

You can really feel his struggle and I just love it. The visual storytelling is incredible in this comic and I will fan girl about it all day because I just love it so much

I'm thinking he says this to gauge just how bad this possession is. time seems like the guy who would, especially as he already seems to know what this is.

I wonder if he really is the hero of realms?

The face he dosent remember any time he's possessed by the medallion is a little worrying.

Like, Link dosent remember fighting this ice comet now. What if he fights an enemy while possessed, breaks the possession then has to relearn how to defeat it because as possessed link he's not gained any information.

mickey 17 vs mickey 7 comparison you dont care about

reading the book im even more confused by kai in the movie. in the book the character is cat chen who is of east asian descent and kind of has more chemistry with and respect for mickey than nasha does and mickey lets her think he and nasha are in an open relationship and she still doesnt try to make a move beyond letting mickey7 stay in her room bc she is grieving her dead roommate and doesn’t want to sleep alone. she knows about the multiples and keeps it a secret out of kindness, and only turns them in after she walks in on them all in bed together because she thinks he was just playing her the whole time and lying when he said it was an accident, because he actually became a multiple on purpose bc he’s a pervert. i felt this was a way more satisfying conflict to read than how it played out in the movie.

i guess changing her name and appearance in the movie must be to make it clear it’s a NEW character in the same narrative role, but then why was kai re-written in such a nonsensical way lol? also timo played by steven yeun in the movie is the exact same as the character of berto the ginger white guy in the book and there are otherwise like zero meaningful differences between them, so idk if that explanation tracks. why would we unwrite a solid female character to create a white female character with no consistency in her morals or decisionmaking whatsoever. bong joon ho can you hear me i have questions

how can i stop wearing makeup especially that i'm very ugly? i feel all these women who say its not hard they probably attractive but not only i am ugly but also gender nonconforming:( "i don't shave and very hairy, broad shoulder and very big nose and buzzcut" and sometimes i get told i look like a man but idc about looking masculine its being so ugly because i see beautiful women who are also masculine and i think whenever i hear radfem say dont wear makeup/women dont need makeup i feel im excluded and that if someone saw me there is no way they will tell me not wear makeup even my therapist said i should take care of how i look and wear makeup which is stupid and i left her but its the reality:( idk if im weak or it is impossible to survive being ugly gnc woman

I wish I could offer you any decent advice, but I've never seen the world from your perspective, so I have no idea what would help. I've always considered myself ugly (mostly due to bullying) and was just fine with it, I thought it was an advantage because then all of the shallow people will stay away from me, and I won't have to deal with anyone who likes me only because of my appearance, which would change with age anyway.

All of the features you describe of yourself that make you feel ugly, sound attractive to me. I'm a lesbian and we love all that. Hairy, broad shoulders, looking gender non-conforming, having a big nose and buzzcut... I mean if you want to date just let me know. I don't think what people think is conveniently beautiful is actually pretty, to me it looks artificial, boring, flat, repetitive. You sound delightful.

I think it would be possible that a person who's been trough your struggle would understand exactly what you mean, why you feel so awful and like surviving while being considered ugly is a horrible experience, but I can't grasp the concept, I've genuinely never felt this. I am lucky to not have experienced it! But I also don't know how to help. I believe if we lived in a female-only society, you would see your features on most or all women, there would be no comparison to who is prettier or uglier because we would all walk around hairy, undisguised, with our noses being unapologetically big and crooked and not painted over. And I don't think any of us would feel self-conscious or bad about it!

I don't know the exact psychology of it, but I guess being exposed to so many painted-over and disguised human faces, which are called beautiful by the masses, can mess up your own perception of yourself. And if on top of that, people are bullying you and telling you to wear makeup, that would be devastating. I remember cutting out anyone who ever told me I should wear makeup or feminine clothing, I wouldn't hear of it.

I've never seen a woman I considered ugly, I don't think anyone has. I think women are sometimes treated as ugly, as an effort to change them, to make them feel inferior and unimportant. But we're not decoration, we're people. We don't have to look any type of way to be considered good enough. There is so much humanity, insight, intelligence, courage, kindness and wisdom in you. That's what matters! To people who care to know you, your face will become beautiful the more they look at you.

Tae was with jennie, and even rm had a long committed relationship until recently it seems from rpwp songs. so all of this people fighting over taekook vs jikook and how jk seems abusive is redundant , bc they arent in a relationship either of them. what are you thoughts about it.

Jungkook may have been nervous at the start of their trip to Connecticut, because Jimin was too, as they both mentioned it’s the first time they’re hanging out after a bit of not seeing each other. But this attempt at highlighting JK only, and saying he seemed uninterested in whatever ways, has been the one thing Tkkrs clung to since the first episode, and it is baseless.

Jungkook is allowed to feel however he felt, but we also all watched the damn show. He was smiling and happy during every single episode thus far, and reiterated his joy many times over. He also said during the first episode that he wanted to keep traveling and filming with Jimin after enlistment. He wants to do it until they’re 50. Was he exaggerating? Most probably, and him being tired at some points was a given due to him being in the middle of promoting his solo work. Outside of that though, he was happy and willing to do the show.

Jungkook and Jimin traveled together because they chose to, because they wanted to. So whatever was going on behind the scenes between them, is something we will never know the full picture of. So if you don’t think they’re together, okay, but I don’t think you ever did, because I’m pretty sure you are a Tkkr anyway.

Regardless of what you ship though, smoke and mirrors are not good indicators that people are dating. Jimin and Jungkook flirt and put their mouths on one another. They choose each other over and over, so no matter the fact that there is a woman claiming to be or trying to insinuate she is Jimin’s girlfriend. Without him ever confirming that, she’s just a weirdo.

Not to mention, why would any of their actual partners post the way she does? If Park Jimin was my man, I do not need to vague post and try to show off bits and pieces of our lives to convince his fans of it. Never mind the fact that it’s his private life. So if they are together, unless Jimin is okay with her stirring shit up in the fandom and posting his house on IG… that’s not something a grown woman, who is famous adjacent herself, dating an incredibly famous person would do.

In comparison, Namjoon and his potential boyfriend situation is the near exact opposite of what that woman is or was doing. We have no idea who the man (or men) is in the pictures Namjoon himself posted. Maybe some people do, idk, but the point is, there is no way to determine who they are nor what they mean to Joon outside of fandom speculation. Yet the speculation makes sense and is believable, because Namjoon himself played into it. He wasn’t deterred by people questioning his sexuality nor relationship status, he posted a heart over a man’s face, and was posting all types of loves songs as he traveled with his family and a man. Yet when he seemingly had his heartbroken, he deleted all photos of the emoji covered man (or men), started talking shit about relationships, and posting sad queer music.

That, imo, is how I believe a relationship between any BTS member would go. Not the heartbreak, but a “quiet launch”. Tae and Jennie were even along similar lines. They unfortunately didn’t post their pictures themselves, but even in the middle of the drama, they kept seeing each other in public spaces. They just didn’t publicize their whereabouts.

So if two members of the group can seemingly date both famous and presumably non famous people, and take pictures and be seen out and about with them, why can’t Jimin? Why is his relationship shrouded in mystery, and only fueled by the woman claiming to live with him all the while he makes no move to imply there’s truth to the rumor?

If he and JK have absolutely nothing going on, why is he out here letting his girlfriend look goofy, all the while biting hickies on a man? While flirting with a man on live and asking him to get naked? While traveling with the same man, getting his ass slapped by him in bed? Enlisting in the military with said man, using a program that keeps them together the entire time?

So again, you don’t have to ship Jikook nor think anything of them, but if you’re going to pull in Taennie and Namjoon’s possible situation to use as examples of the members dating, keep it steady across the board. Jimin and Jungkook’s speculated relationships with women do not match up with Taennie nor Joon’s situation, yet Jikook does.

They travel, sight see, share meals, stay up late, take cute selfies, and cuddle up. So what makes Jikook less likely, aside from them being in the same group for a decade? Which only adds reason to why they may have had some communication issues or whatever, and needed time apart.

most of modern western music is built around the 12-EDO (12 equal divisions of the octave, the 12 tone equal temperament), where we divide the octave in 12 exactly equal steps (this means that there are 12 piano keys per octave). we perceive frequency geometrically and not arithmetically, as in that "steps" correspond to multiplying the frequency by a constant amount and not by adding to the frequency

an octave is a doubling of the frequency, so a step in 12-EDO is a factor of a 12th root of 2. idk the exact reason why we use 12-EDO, but two good reasons why 12 is a good number of steps are that

12 is a nice number of notes: not too small, not too big (its also generally a very nice number in mathematics)

the division in 12 steps makes for fairly good approximations of the harmonics

reason 2 is a bit more complex than reason 1. harmonics are a naturally occurring phenomena where a sound makes sound at the multiples of its base frequency. how loud each harmonic (each multiple) is is pretty much half of what defines the timbre of the sound

we also say the first harmonics sound "good" or "consonant" in comparison to that base frequency or first harmonic. this is kinda what pythagoras discovered when he realized "simple" ratios between frequencies make nice sounds

the history of tuning systems has revolved around these harmonics and trying to find a nice system that is as close to them while also avoiding a bunch of other problems that make it "impossible" to have a "perfect tuning". for the last centuries, we have landed on 12 tone equal temperament, which is now the norm in western music

any EDO system will perfectly include the first and second harmonics, but thats not impressive at all. any harmonic that is not a power of 2 is mathematically impossible to match by EDO systems. this means that NONE of the intervals in our music are "perfect" or "true" (except for the octave). theyre only approximations. and 12 steps make for fairly close approximations of the 3rd harmonic (5ths and 4ths), the 5th harmonic (3rds and 6ths) and some more.

for example, the 5th is at a distance of 7 semitones, so its 12-EDO ratio is 2^(7/12) ~= 1.4983, while a perfect 5th would be at 3/2=1.5 (a third harmonic reduced by one octave to get it in the first octave range), so a 12-EDO fifth sounds pretty "good" to us

using only 12-EDO is limiting ourselves. using only EDO is limiting ourselves. go out of your way, challenge yourself and go listen to play and write some music outside of this norm

but lets look at other EDO systems, or n-EDO systems. how can we measure how nicely they approximate the harmonics? the answer is probably that there is no one right way to do it

one way we could do it is by looking at the first k harmonics and measuring how far they are to the closest note in n-EDO. one way to measure this distance for the rth harmonic is this:

adding up this distance for the first k harmonics we get this sequence of measures:

the smallest this measure, the "best" the n-EDO approximates these k harmonics. we can already see that 12 seems to be a "good" candidate for n since it has that small dip in the graph, while n=8 would be a pretty"bad" one. we can also see that n=7 is a "good" one too. 7-EDO is a relatively commonly used system

now, we might want to penalize bigger values of n, since a keyboard with 1000 notes per octave would be pretty awful to play, so we can multiply this measure by n. playing around with the value k we see that this measure grows in direct proportion to k, so we could divide by k too to keep things "normalized":

we can see some other "good" candidates are 24, 31, 41 and 53, which are all also relatively commonly used systems (i say relatively because they arent nearly as used as 12-EDO by far)

increasing k we notice something pretty interesting

(these are the same plots as before but with k=500 and k=4000)

the graph seems to flatten, and around 0.25 or 1/4. this is kinda to be expected, since this method is, in a very weird way, measuring how far a particular sequence of k values is from the extremes of an interval and taking the average of those distances. turns out that the expected distance that a random value is from the extremes of an interval it is in is 1/4 of the interval's length, so this is not that surprising. still cool tho

this way, we can define a more-or-less normalized measure of the goodness of EDO tuning systems:

this score s_k(n) will hover around 1 and will give lower scores to the "best" n-EDO systems. we could also use instead 1-s_k(n), which will hover around zero and the best systems will have higher scores

my conclusion: i dont fucking now. this was complete crankery. i was surprised the candidates for n this method finds actually match the reality of EDO systems that are actually used

idk go read a bit about john cage and realize that music is just as subjective as any art should be. go out there and fuck around. but knockout is the best example of this as he wants to get back at silas for breakdown even if he then experiments on his body later. i mean even in that episode (tfp:bh ep 8) he says that he imagines breakdown would be fine with it because it hurts silas so he's clearly thinking about him. and him working with starscream-he literally says to him that he always did appreciate him (heavy paraphrasing i dont quite remember exact wording for either of those examples(underutilized duo for sure))

in comparison tfes is very...different. in a way that grates on me so i stopped at ep 10. mostly bc im not a child, but in the way they wanted to show the decepticons as people. which feels like they sanded down the edges of all these characters and they feel like completely different people. and i know its a kids show but i really don't like it. and i find them being in a truce weird. i dont like seeing megatron working happily with optimus, even if he has complaints about how ghost works and whatever. but thats more personal than real criticism and im just yapping now.

ben isnt the exact same as he was in the first 2 timelines because he was raised different literally died had to watch his family as a ghost for 15 years yadayada but i love to be delusional and time travel is one of my favorite topics so i would loove to talk about this so that is what i will be doing !!

Ben was loved by his family, they say multiple times in the show that they stopped thinking everything was worth it after he died, as much as they're dysfunctional and not the greatest family they still are and it shows when you put them side by side in comparison to the sparrows, but back to Ben he always wanted to be with his family, he was protective over both his families in different ways because that's just who he is, you see him in the first 2 seasons yearning to be back with his siblings, following Klaus around and all that and yes while he absolutely is a little shit his love for his Umbrella family is so..filled with despair and pure love and its kind of lethargic to watch and witness?? It makes me feel so sick thinking about it because, you grow up with these people, and you die in some freak accident and your brother doesn't even tell the rest of your family that he can see you and interact with you for years!! And you follow them around for the rest of your afterlife, watching them make mistake after mistake and you can't do anything about it because you are just a spirit looming over them. They build you a statue and it fucking breaks because they can't get their shit together. You're stuck just outside their reach not being able to say anything to the people you miss so so much and you hold each other so dear to your heart and they don't even know you're there. "slay the darkness within you, find peace with the light" is engraved on his statue/grave and it breaks my heart??? Like what the fuck you guys. Ben was not some happy all the time little angel, he had his flaws just like his siblings and everyone else. He had so much trauma from literally having tentacles coming out of his stomach and he probably killed so many people on purpose or not. I don't like when people mischaracterize him in the way where they make him so..happy? because as much as I would want that he wasn't, Klaus literally describes him as "Dark rainy cloud on a bright sunny day" or something along the lines like I don't think a lot of people get it !!! He spent his whole afterlife just wanting his family, and was so protective over them in his own little way, he was too scared to move on to the light because he was scared he'd be alone and he'd rather be with his brothers and sister. You see him being mean to Klaus in the first 2 seasons and its so funny because it's like yeah he loves you but you are brothers and he's gonna bully the shit out of you and hurt your feelings, yeah you and your siblings were so close so when you possess one brother and go to another one because you finally have a grip, and something that you can use to connect with your siblings again even for a second.

Ben is a complex character just like the rest of his siblings, and you can see parallels between both Sparrow and Umbrella Ben in how he acts with his seperate families. He just wanted to be loved and seen by both of them and it is so gut wrenching. He is such a miserable character because he's longing and yearning just to be included, and be a part of his family. He has to prove himself in some way or another, he loves his siblings so much, all of them in all the timelines.

I thought of this theory that was lowkey self indulgent because I love time travel and paradoxes and all that in my heart and soul and my delusions Ben's love for the Umbrellas transcends through the timelines. No matter what variation of himself they are all so important to him. He was so so upset that he wasn't invited to the bachelor party because he finally has his family that doesn't care about place rankings, the numbers, the counts, any of that. They just care about him. And he can't handle that because Reginald raised the Sparrows and the Umbrellas so differently and Ben is right smack in the middle, torn in between the timelines. This isn't me being like "Oh he's like the EXACT same person like he has the same personality as other ben." Because oh definitely not. They have the same values and the same priorities for the most part but they definitely do not have the same personality as the other because Reginald raised them so differently. And I kind of believe that Reginald knew about Ben and realized how much of lost potential he was? So he raised him to be yknow the "greatest", number one. And then something goes wrong and he get's demoted to number two and yeah Sparrow Ben is definitely more...Stern? Aggressive?Not Aggressive but like I guess more aggravated I suppose because he was literally raised to be better than the umbrellas, he wasn't growing up knowing what it was like to be in such friendships with his siblings like he was before. And it really affected him. Yes, I think Umbrella Ben is still in there because Ben is genuinely a good person and I believe his love for his siblings ascends through the cosmos no matter what timelines, paradox, whatever.

The cover is made of 100% genuine leather (according to the tag on the purse i bought at goodwill) and is embroidered with the colors of Molly’ jacket. The back embroidery is meant to mimic his tattoos, because of the whole soulmate thing involving skin.

The leatherbound book and the fire colored headbands were my nod to Caleb. (Plus, if you think of it, how fitting is it to have something of Caleb’s be covered in symbol’s of Molly) If im being honest, my first idea was to paint acrylic scars on the leather, but that pales in comparison to what i landed on.

Im really proud of the typesetting too, I’ve definitely improved since my last bind. (The fic is maybe 10k words longer, but literally almost the exact same size. Thats how much the margins improved)

AND i added a fan poem i wrote for the fic like 3 years ago for an english class. It was “write a poem about a book or piece of media” or smth. Ironically, the teacher accused me of plagiarism bc i put the name of the fanfic by it. I had to inform her that no, the fanfic in question is 70,731 words, my poem is about it, not directly it. Good poem tho, im still proud of it, and i figured itd make the beginning of the book feel more real.

I also put Devon Rue’s map in, specifically centered around where they’re running around in the book, which just simplifies to the Dwendalian empire.

I definitely couldve been more careful with my glue job, and the corners are gonna need protectors eventually bc i didnt cut them right, but overall i am really proud of this.

Hopefully by next book im using printed covers though because i dont know how many more custom fabric covers i have in me. I love them but my god are they tedious to make.

I was reading your tags to dre's published ask. Do you think while writing about these blood sucking monsters, Anne deliberately made one of them a former slave master? I mean the way this man during his mortal times had benefited by preying on the black race and the reflection of it in his fate where he is now in literal terms an entity who survives by preying on people? Or is it like twilight ( movies) where Jasper's past as a confederate soldeir is just dropped as if it's the most casual thing to shrug away.

i dont know about twilight book or movie to make a meaningful comparison to louis’s book counterpart. i wish i knew. and tbh, its hard to prescribe authorial intent on a dead woman who wrote a sprawling epic of 20+ books for 50 years , especially with shifting perspectives , namely pivoting away from louis to lestat as her MC bc of what fantasy/POV was more interesting to her. but i think in the first book there was some intention there, i cant just say how much. lestat wants to hunt the runaway slaves along the freniere plantation, and louis discourages him from doing it not out of compassion for enslaved people (which would be condescending and abysmal writing for a slaveowning character), but for his proximity to the freniere’s as fellow planters. ive talked about it a lot how its really interesting in the first 2 books that the american planter is created both literally + vampirically by the european aristocrat.. and theyre both parasitic beings in relation to the enslaved people, eventually draining them+ burning the plantation down. iwtv early book louis is resentful of lestat in part bc he thought lestat wanted his plantation, but when he learns who lestat is + where he came from, the power and will he has. hes far more genial to him. its a very dark book, and i think the fact that these characters are so vicious + melancholic is intentional on the authors part. i dont know how much race based chattel slavery is meaningfully explored from the perspective of the slaveowner, but book louis thinking of people in his captivity as fixtures, as creepy ‘things’ more proximate to the supernatural bc of their ‘african nature’ (that had yet to be ‘trained’ out of them) is a very probable, chilling, and haunting perspective of a former slaveowner to take even a hundred and some years removed from it. or if we take it as book louis immersing himself in his perspective @ the time. either way. and its pathetic when fans try to flatten book louis into ‘he was a good slaveowner’ cuz at that point theyre just conflating the movie with the book. i kinda joke that book louis is the vampire it girl bc he was such a terrible mortal LOL. im still indeterminate on the exact mode or purpose, or how much it was just about the aesthetic of gothic horror (re: the earth’s a savage garden). especially bc later books fixate on very discrete modes and metaphors of servitude/subjugation ‘being a slave to the blood’ is a recurring motif running antiparallel with the motif of ‘purifying the african/asian/foreign’ (through ‘admixture’ with the ‘european’) (s/o poacher bro gabi + talamasca bro dave ig) and in later works, theres the cycle of slavery through marius & armand.. marius, whos mother was a slave, purchases armand. chattel slavery took inspo from the romans in the idea of maternal based slave caste inheritance.. idk. idk. ive had very long rambly convos w ppl on here in the past (& im still a bit embarrased abt it) on this, but i think the reasons why fans dont rly get into it is cuz most ppl got into these books at a young age + was just into the cool lore or the queer shit and were able to handwave things as just aesthetic/era/quirky anne things etc. idk.

the unfortunate and honest to god truth of the matter is that the protagonist of JJBA part 5, giorno giovanna, fucking sucks.

what if that little shithead from the twilight zone episode "it's a good life" was gay and watched "goodfellas". you might think "wow that sounds great" but, well, somehow it's not.

it is months later and i have been struggling with writing this for a bazillion reasons: i got sick, real life events occurred, i had to work on comic, i died, etc. but the most strenuous reason of all in the end was facing the impenetrable, tangled, and deeply complicated gordian knot that is the little ladybug loving bitch named giorno and not knowing where the fuck to even begin.

i had to think long and hard about how to approach the problem of "giorno giovanna". he is like a diamond of sucking ass: multi-faceted and beautiful in his perfection but is, ultimately, just a stupid fucking rock from the dirt. he completely lacks the innate charisma and personality inherent in previous jojo protagonists AND antagonists; despite having both the joestar AND brando gene pools to pull from, he manages to snag a net total of 0 personality traits. this problem is multiplied 100 fold once he starts actually doing things to move the plot along and the universe repeatedly bends itself like a pretzel in order to gift him undeserved and unrewarding (to us, the audience) win after win after win.

his theme goes hard as hell tho

if you were to ask me what is wrong with giorno, i would have no problem making a long and detailed list of why i want to slap the little cinnamon rolls of his head. i have no idea how to organize that list into a more coherent form of criticism that points at the overarching structural weakness of part 5. part 5 really, really wants you to like and root for giorno. it hinges on it. his victories are explicitly supposed to be emotionally and morally gratifying. they are instead trite and annoying.

for years, YEARS, my only experience with the entirety of part 5 outside of infamous panels and the most basic information about the story, was this incredible, evergreen and laser targeted tweet:

giorno says this exact line and then turns cars into frogs so that they (the bad guys) cant catch them (they do catch them)

how DO you talk about giorno? giorno's blandness permeates any situation he has the misfortune of attending and the parts of the narrative where he's missing for one reason or another are significantly improved by his absence. in comparison with the deuteragonists (bruno bucciarati) and tritagonists (the members of bruno's squad in the mafia family passione), he has all the flavor of a communion wafer. his character arc is non-existent. emotionally, he might as well have just gone to the store and back by the end of the story.

and, look, araki likes to play fast and loose with how powerful a stand is or what its abilities are. im not here to measure power levels or fucking whatever stupid shit people get up to. the more wild and insane he gets with his incredibly "unique" ""understanding"" of science and geometry, i'm 99% on board for. but giorno's stand, gold experience, is whatever the narrative needs it to be at any given time with no consistency. it's OP as hell long before he gets the 11th hour power boost; his stand has the extra trans-dimensional ability to remove any tension from a fight scene. through this, gold requiem can destroy the psyche of the audience, truly making it the most powerful stand of all time.

people used to love to bitch about not understanding how the villain's stand works in this part, but if anyone tells you they understand what the fuck THIS means they're lying to you.

anyway, there is only one solution i can think of when it comes to how to approach this: assess the major story beats in order. i think jumping around in the progression of events to highlight individual flaws in the character will not adequately impart the suffering one feels as an audience member while the narrative yo-yos between being rollicking good fun and being at the mercy of the little 15 year old twink with god mode on.

and so, having made it past koichi's tiny ass role (and his tiny ass) in the story and addressing how we can proceed, we can cover bruno (a genuinely wonderful character), polpo, and the wasted character building opportunity of the piss drinking scene, which vexes and infuriates me to this day. [thinking about the piss scene and getting mad again] ooooh!!!!
