#I sound a lot like my sister #except not as good #it was a whole thing back in my home town #kelsey 2: the sequel that couldn't live up to the original #i don't want to be my sister #I can't really escape that shadow though #even all these years later #especially when I can't even use my own voice without it just being her voice #also my sister is the most cishet woman I know #and not in like a bad or bigoted way #just someone who is very very sure of their gender and sexuality #a bastion of womanhold #so having the same voice when I'm someone who does not really jive with womanhood makes me dysphoric

(His parents still love him obviously.) #snake #snakes #Hognose #hognoses #pets #In her defense I also didn't realize the reason she couldn't move it at the end was because her tail was no longer under the basket #So instead of sliding over her it just bumped into her and was stuck #to her credit she did listen to me and follow my directions! But neither of us realized the problem.#ah it was cute while she did it #she was going a bit before I started recording #she comes up with silly fun activities #i should let her play with the hammock again #it's funny when she found it she'd gesture to me with her head when she wanted me to lift it and put it down #and it was like a weird elevator parachute game #i think she might have been extra delighted she was able to communicate her wants to me and I did them #We both got practice with that the other day when we played climbing ball #I misunderstood a few times #she is much more patient and less easily frustrated than her sister #she was asking for climbing ball and I thought she was asking for kisses #i did eventually figure out what she actually wanted #i suppose it helps she likes kisses too #when i say kisses I'm not putting my lips on her #I let her flick her tongue at the tip of my nose and make little kiss sounds at her #she either understands this is affection or otherwise likes it #Because she will often go to my nose and I'll give her kisses like this #I don't kiss her because the bacteria and stuff in my human mouth could be dangerous for her #I know reptiles and such can also have salmonella #But I'm really not worried about that part tbh as I keep my girls pretty clean #They are princesses #And know it

as a huge unreliable narrator enjoyer i love the fact that the raven tower is narrated by someone who cannot lie. so the narration is not unreliable, and any kind of uncertainty is always couched in "here is a story i have heard" or "i imagine", but it scratches the same itch as unreliable narration because the evidentiality of the narration is still so central, just in the opposite way. stories that don't care about where the narrator is getting their information or what biases are present in the way that information is shared with us are on one end of a spectrum, and stories that do care about those things are on the other end, and the raven tower is firmly situated alongside the unreliably narrated stories even though the whole point is that the narrator is as motivated as it is possible to be to never say something that is untrue. and it's fascinating to see how ann leckie manages to build suspense and subvert expectations without really at any point deliberately misleading the reader. every time i reread one of her books, the bouncing of the dvd screensaver in my brain gets a little more frenetic. how does she do what she does. ann leckie what is your secret.

#this post is spoiler-free btw. the narrator is very upfront about the fact that it can't lie and says this very early in the story #i'm only like 40% through my reread and i don't remember any details of what happens but i'm already losing it #and the fact that it's first-person second-person narration...completely undivorceable from the conceit of the book #might write a different post about that but probably only after i finish rereading #i finally got my sister to agree to read it and she's like 'i read the first fifteen pages! i like the style'#and i'm barely restraining myself from being like girl please read another fifty pages and get back to me #if you are not frothing at the mouth by page 100 then your money back. guaranteed.#my sister loves semantics like the linguistic subfield of semantics so i've been begging her to read this for so many years...#like i KNOW she will love it when that stuff starts becoming apparent. which is remarkably early in the book #hrrrrhughghrhrrgh i want to talk about it so bad #the raven tower #ann leckie #my posts #unreliable narrators #or not!!! actually!!!#storytelling #semantics #f

to me, tim and duke occupy a similar position in the batfamily where they're clearly not (or previously weren't, in tim's case) bruce's sons but also clearly have a connection to bruce's children that separates them from barb, steph, helena, jean paul, etc. none of the latter three are dick's siblings, but tim nearly always has been, and then he's cass' too. even if he hadn't been adopted, this would be true. duke is jason's brother, and is implied to have a sibling relationship with cass and damian, and has even shown up in tim's picture of his brothers. this is not changed by the fact that duke should never be adopted.

#you could say jpv and cass have that sibling bond but i saw them as friends who understand each other very closely unlike babs and jpv #who explicity made their relationship brother/sister adjacent #and also tim is helena's little brother but i think we all agree that it doesnt change dick and helena's relationship #it's not exactly...necessary for there to be this group of people who occupy this overlapping network of being siblings but it does happen #to exist this time. even if that doesn't overlap with the people who consider bruce a father #it's just one of the many subgroups that exist within the batfamily itself and i wanted to define it for the purposes of my posts #extra disclaimer in case it isn't clear: i'm not using familial relationships vs non familial relationships to create a hierarchy #i don't think all of the sibling(esque) relationships are inherently stronger than the non familial ones. i'm just defining them based on #the more dictionary definition of sibling (< also why im not talking abt found family. it's just not my point rn)
