not to be dramatic but i am so tired of certain magical girl fans who, in 2024, whine about madoka ruining the genre and how "thanks to madoka there are no lighthearted magical girl shows anymore and everything is all dark and gritty now >>:(" because that's not true at all!! if lighthearted magical girl shows aren't in demand anymore then why is toei still making precure seasons? not only that but there are a bunch of new magical girl shows coming out this year alone. but instead you choose to give attention to madoka wannabe #324 and fetish bait show #582 to whine about how "magical girls are dead now".
you want lighthearted, fluffy, fun magical girl shows? THEN FUCKING SUPPORT THEM!
himitsu no aipri, which is a part of the pretty series, will air on april 7
acro trip will premiere some time this year
magilumiere co ltd will premiere in the fourth quarter of this year
the magical girl and evil lieutenant used to be archenemies will air in july of this year
GO SUPPORT THESE SHOWS INSTEAD OF WHINING ABOUT THE GENRE BEING DEAD, THEN WE CAN TRULY HAVE A MAGICAL GIRL RENAISSANCE.
#there's definitely some criticism about how madoka impacted the genre#and there's nothing wrong with pointing that out#because some of these madoka knockoffs ARE godawful#but dear lord i am tired of so called magical girl fans acting like the genre is dead#precure#puella magi madoka magica#pretty series#himitsu no aipri#acro trip#magilumiere co ltd#the magical girl and evil lieutenant used to be archenemies#magical girls#rebecca talks

The best worst thing about my PMMM x omori au is combining PMMM’s ending with OMORI’s. Yeah I’d like two depressions for the price of one
(SPOILER WARNING IN TAGS!! MOOTS THAT ARE PLANNING ON WATCHING PMMM (I have a few of you hehe) LOOK AWAY!!!)
#sobs.#combining those two is like. a recipe for disaster and a lot of ugly crying#you’ve got the concept ending merged with final duet?? fuck man#I’ve been thinking about how one would combine them all day and it’s making me cry and sob.#I think (SPOILERS AHEAF FOR BOTH OMORI AND PMMM!! I know I have moots planning to watch pmmm so… look away)#sunny’s witch form would be some iteration of omori#would it be like. as powerful as walpurgisnacht? i don’t know#but I also want sunny to have some sort of fight with omori. maybe he’s still in there somewhere#and I also want mari to be involved somehow because I just have this absolutely gut wrenching concept of them both dying and/ or doing the-#-madoka concept ending and getting to talk one last time in the concert hall line madoka did with sayaka and I am not abandoning that-#-because when I first thought of it I was floored by how much potential that has to RUIN me#but also. I don’t want to make it a carbon copy of pmmm OR OMORI’s ending#I want it to be both at the same time but also its own thing?? it’s very hard#if any pmmm and omori fans have any ideas let me know I’d love to discuss things about this au#it’s been making me ugly sob all day#omori#omori au#pmmm#madoka magica#pmmm au#puella magi madoka magica

It's that time! I try fitting more of the holy quintet into honkai star rail till either a crossover comes out officially or I've gone insane enough to start drawing it
Today I've decided who of the holy quintet would get along with Honkai star rail characters.
( spoilers for madoka magica )
OKAY so I'm starting first with Sayaka because she's gonna be the easiest.
I think she would get along with argenti, and yinging primarily because the fact argenti is a knight she has knight theming in her magical girl outfit, and Yinging because of their chaotic energy.
Not to mention, I feel like argenti would be kinda like a father figure to her, or at least a supportive figure in her life, giving romance advice and confidence to the girl.
Also because ( fun fact, Sayaka always becomes a witch if she's a magical girl in that timeline ) the pure tragedy for argenti and yinging seeing her turn or as a witch, or wondering why she stopped showing up. Not to even mention the possibility of having to kill her witch form is the angst I fucking love.
Mami is next, and I feel like she would get along with himeko, natasha, Primairly because of her love of tea and caring nature. and babysit sometimes for Clara and Hook because of her relationship with Bebe in the rebellion.
I don't have any angst for Mami because I can't think of any ( if you have any ideas, tell me ) but I think she's one of the few that can drink himeko's coffee.
Madoka I think, would be friends with sushang, HuoHuo, and Asta, and there's no illogical reason this time. I just think they would get along.
But I do think once she became a God and all memories of her were erased, I do think HuoHuo would always feel a pleasant feeling of someone nearby at times, even if she's alone, like someone is watching over her..
Homura, well I don't think she really cares for any honkai star rail characters, but at times would hang out with the stelleron hunters, primarily because of elio's scripts, and because she finds witches easier.
But she does have a soft spot for March 7th because of how She reminds her of madoka. Even at times wondering if it was possible that she was another version of madoka from a different timeline.
Finally kyoko! She was the hardest because I could not for the life of me figure out who she liked, but I decided she would probably admires seele and hang out with quinque and Natasha. Due to the fact she's seen playing games during certain scenes, and I don't have one for seele but it's her ideals and strength.
I have no idea for angst, but maybe for a period of time, she hanged around Natasha's orphanage due to the fact she didn't have anywhere else to go at the time. So she's gotten familiar with her and the depleting resources.
And that is it! I hope I was somewhat accurate to the characters and lore, and if you have any ideas I'd love to hear them!
Also no apologies to the angst >:]

Madoka became god and everyone who loved her fogot of her existence, except for Homura who loved her so much she broke the rules of the universe she was born into to join her in the making of her new one, just to than break its rules as well to try and once again protect her

...Fellow PMMM and Pokemon SWSH fans, how much karma would someone get by, let's say...
Preventing an apocalypse of eldritch origin brought on by human desperation
Being tied to a legendary beast who saved the region from said disaster a long time ago and helps them defeat the heart of the event and bring peace to the lands once again
Is already related to someone with a lot of power, respect, and influence over all of Galar
is friends with someone who overpowers and takes the title of champion from said respectable person
already has a lot of emotional baggage before and after the events of the main story
said baggage getting worse thanks to OUR and a white-haired bitch's actions; completely destroying his self-esteem and painting himself as worthless and just dragging everyone down, exemplified by the lengths he went through just to defeat us for once, only to be met with failure time and time again
Look back at the first point; Homura clearly states that for every person we save as a magi, we'll end up cursing the same amount of people as witches in the end during the beginning of episode 9
...can't be worse than Gisela, right? We won't have another Crepuscule de la Reine, right????
#for the record; yes I am talking about Hop#82% done with the post- I am kinda stumped with the karmic aspect of it all#Chat Room#Pokemon#Pokemon SWSH#Hop#Rival Hop#puella magi madoka magica#madoka magica#madoka witches

I think my favorite ways to interpret Kyubey are that he's either completely full of shit about literally everything or fucking stupid because holy shit why would THAT be the way you try to deal with the heat death of the universe. You can grant REALITY WARPING WISHES you dumb bitch. Literally all you have to do is find a suitably powerful middle school girl who sincerely wants to avert the heat death of the universe and tell her you can grant wishes and also please wish for the heat death of the universe not to happen and your problem is IMMEDIATELY solved. Being of pure logic my ASS
#kyubey#kyuubey#puella magi madoka magica#mahou shoujo madoka magica#madoka magica#real talk i know the reason for this out of universe is because the rules were written to be cruel to the main characters first#and everything else second (it is mostly a show about kids getting screwed over and one kid doing something about it)#But i am ignoring that for the purposes of this post because it's funnier#If i pretend the actual intent was to build a logical solution in this framework

For today’s 3:30 am Honkai rewrite pitch: the Honkai
It’s just an energy created by the friction between the imaginary tree and the sea of quanta
It’s not exactly sentient, but it collect memories from everyone who is infected by it and store them in the cocoon of finality
Because the people who are infected by the Honkai tend to be those who can’t avoid contaminated area (ex: poor areas like sundown alley, or any area where their was an unexpected eruption) or people who were intentionally experimented on, and the infection itself tends to make the victim pretty ill, a lot of the memories in the cocoon of finality are pretty awful
Any sentient being who’s infected by the Honkai gets their brain connected to the cocoon of finality as sort of a collective consciousness
It’s sorta alive but not (like the Promare)
Part of the reason Honkai infected tend to be violent is cuz their brains are hooked up to billions of other people’s traumatic memories, causing them to lash out in fear
Instead of having a complete brain override, Herrschers are more like the host’s original personality+ the collective consciousness, but there is some variation
Early Herrschers are less influenced by the cocoon given that their just aren’t any memories in it yet (hence why Elysia and Joyce more or less got to be their own people)
Later Herrschers can overcome the cocoons influence if they have some sort of strong attachment keeping them grounded
Herrschers that are isolated for too long may completely loose the hosts personality and become just an extra powerful Honkai beast
In the PE, the cocoon of finality existed inside a person (Kalpas) like any other Honkai core, but Mobius removed it and Dr. MEI sealed it inside Prometheus in hopes it would end the Herrscher cycle and stop finality from appearing spoiler: it didn’t work
Idk man, I’m just trying to recenter the power system so love genuinely is the answer to saving everyone
#honkai impact#Honkai rewrite#rewrite#every time I describe Mobius doing something in the same sentence as Dr. MEI I feel like I should specify: I adore Mobius#but ya- power of love and friendship can be a genuine solution if that’s how you set up the conflict#honestly I’m surprised hoyo didn’t connect the power system to emotions in lore#it’s just a convenient way to handle power growth in more emotionally driven stories where you don’t want to spend a lot of time on training#like the three best examples I can think of this off the top of my head are hunter x Hunter jjba and Madoka Magic’s#because I am legally obligated to talk about Madoka Magica (yes autocorrect. that is how I want to spell it) every time I do a Honkai rewrit#Hunter x Hunter is more of a hybrid model#where like ya- nen is deeply connected to the person and their personality#but also you gotta do classic training and studying#in jjba the powers are straight up manifestations of the souls where character growth = more powers#and in Madoka the powers are manifestations of the girls hopes#I just think it’s a good way to justify power growth and bombastic fights in series that are more character centric#my Honkai rewrites always feel less like rewrites and more like reorganizing to me#the pieces are there they just need a new filing cabinet

My most important sapphic ships post before Pride Month ends
What the title says, studying kept (and still keeps me) busy so we gotta go fast lol
Bumbleby (RWBY)
to the surprise of absolutely no one, they get first place (despite me not going in a particular order) because of reasons. They're perfect. Soulmates. Slowburn of all time. Yin and Yang. Eyes the color of each other's souls. Truest OTP to ever OTP in my book. ∞/10
Konosetsu (Negima!)

I already talked about them in their own post, this scene changed my life leading to my self-discovery and it still lives rent-free in my mind.
Kyosaya (Madoka Magica)
I'd also add MadoHomu but I'm trying to keep it to just one for each fandom. That said, they still make me mentally unwell. I love them, and I did for a long time now. I can't wait for the next movie to come out and suffer.
Ruby and Sapphire (Steven Universe)
These bitches had the first cartoon gay wedding and kiss DO I NEED TO SAY MORE???
Korrsami (Avatar)
Still down the queer cartoons making history path, these two made me insane back in the day because I still didn't understand I was queer and lots of sapphic couple were starting to appear in media, and I remember jokingly say how "lesbian ships were hauting me". All I can say now is "Thank you" lol. Anyway, they were incredibly important and all the people criticizing how little queerness there's in the show will never understand just how massive this scene was.
Catradora (She-Ra and the Princesses of Power)
Friends to Enemies to back to Friends to Lovers. Iconic. I still want a movie with their adventures bringing magic back to the universe.
Hollstein (Carmilla)
My third beloved blonde with a cat gf ship. I miss this web-series every day. Also, Natasha Negovanlis played an immense role in my gay awakening.
Ellie and Riley (The Last of Us: Left Behind)
Ellie and Dina are adorable and I love them, BUT I just will never get over these two. That dlc fucked me up. (also, they're in the same category with Korrasami as "gay ships that hauted me before I realized I was queer" lol)
Lumity (The Owl House)
I remember starting this show feeling it as the successor of Steven Universe, at least to me. We could say that at level of mistreatment from its parent company, it defenitely surpassed it, but at least I'm glad I was right and we got Luz and Amity becoming canon. I love these two and not a day passes without me yelling at Disney for what it did to them.
Bubbline (Adventure Time)
I actually watched Adventure Time fully only recently, but I always loved them even when I watched the show randomly when it appeared in tv back in the day. Getting to see the progression properly just made me love them even more.
Yasammy (Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous/Chaos Theory)
Incredibly recent addition, but I am so glad that I checked out Camp Cretaceous and got into it. It's a nice show and these two are a really cute couple, their confession and especially Yaz's internal turmoil were just so on point. I was really happy to see them go still strong in Chaos Theory, and I can't wait for next season.
Pricefield (Life is Strange)
These two caused me pain in the best possible way. I felt literal heartbreak at the Bay Ending, and I was just as emotional at the Bae one (Bae > Bay Forever) I hope the new game will respect their relationship OR ELSE.
Wow, this is quite the list. I do have an amazing taste, if I do say so myself, ahah!
Well, I guess this is it for now, glad I could make it before Pride Month was over! Knowing myself I might have actually forgotten some though, so keep an eye out for possible updates (what makes me even think that you'd care? lol).
That would be all, be gay and do crimes! Bye!

Madoka Magica Ship Analysis - HomuMado
Based on these two polls [X] [X], I will write an analysis that'll also include how I feel about the ship (similarly to my Digimon shipping game analysis posts).
Disclaimer: I won't claim this to be a conclusive/definitive analysis of all of the ship's aspects. I have watched the original 12-episode-series and movies (including Rebellion), the Magia Record anime and I've read several manga series (the Original, The Different Story, Wraith Arc, Rebellion Story, Oriko Magica, Another Story, Mitakihara Anti-Materials). But I'm aware that I haven't seen/read all of what's out there and am also not thoroughly familiar with the games. Plus, oftentimes, ship dynamics vary depending on which series/timeline you are looking at. I'm fairly certain that thousands of words must have been written about this ship already, better and more elaborate than I probably ever could - so this is going to be my personal take on it.
Whether canon provides input on them or not.
As the main faces, characters (and ship) of the entire franchise, it's absolutely impossible to watch/read/play the series without taking note of Madoka Kaname, Homura Akemi and their dynamic. Their characters, arcs and development are irrevocably connected with one another - no pun intended (yet) - and without them, we wouldn't even have a story to talk about to begin with. But let's start at the beginning, shall we.
On one hand, we have Homura - who initially started off as a shy and timid girl, prone to sickness and ridden by insecurities. Presumably raised as an orphan at a government-funded orphanage, she struggles to find her way, fitting in at school, keeping up, making friends and socializing in general - thus she becomes an easy target for corruption (we shall keep this in mind for later) and is almost being dragged into suicidal tendencies by a Witch... If it wasn't for the pink-haired Magical Girl (and her senpai) who is going to rescue her - and Homura has no idea yet that she'll end up committing her entire life and purpose to her soon after.
Madoka initially starts off as not considering herself to be anything special - but is still determined to do good as a Magical Girl, she appears to be straight-forward yet kind, gentle and welcoming... Especially towards Homura. So - is it really surprising that Homura, timid, insecure, lonely Homura, would end up thoroughly enchanted by Madoka? The first real friend she must have had in ages? The person who smiled at her, reached out and encouraged her in her pure, innocent ways? Absolutely not, it's highly relatable, endearing... And thus, it shall be even less surprising to see Homura not wanting to lose her again. The feeling of being wanted, appreciated - of not being alone anymore.
After watching Madoka sacrificing herself, ending up killed by Walpurgisnacht in the original timeline, Homura makes her wish to become a Magical Girl herself - not just to meet Madoka again, but to be the one to rescue her this time. What appears to be a wish of determined, unexpectedly confident heroism at first will, just like every other wish, turn out to be a multi-layered mess of human complexity. An underlying desire born from affection - that will eventually turn into something deeper, desperation, obsession, whatever you may want to call it.
Homura lives through countless timelines, repeating the same month over and over again to save Madoka, discovering the fate of Magical Girls to become Witches eventually along the way, becoming more and more skilled at weaponry combat... At some point, she was already perfectly ready to become a witch alongside Madoka, as long as they're together, destroying the entire world - but is held back by Madoka's wish to prevent her from falling for Kyubey. And thus, Homura thoroughly hyperfocuses on her personal mission, so she won't lose the last bit of hope, no matter how bleak the situation may be. However, in the process, she is growing more and more distant, not only from Madoka and their fellow magical girls, but also from herself. Hardened by the experiences, she develops a cool facade and a stoic attitude, swallowing and locking away emotional attachment to anything and anyone that is not Madoka in order to reach her goal.
With every timeline resetted, more karmic energy revolves around Madoka - but with Homura's wish revolving around saving her, she also becomes increasingly more timid, reserved and insecure each time(line). While her general stance on Homura is still mainly the same - finding her, her look and name cute/pretty -, their ability to relate to one another dwindles with every reset. Homura's attempts at reaching Madoka, as desperate as they may appear, rather scare and alienate Madoka - who cannot possibly understand what she has been going through, the time she had spent, the absolute commitment...
Until Madoka eventually makes her own wish to honour all of Homura's achievements - until she wishes for witches to never have existed and, enabled by all the karmic energy, she becomes a literal Goddess in the process, the Law of Cycles to keep magical girls from despairing, creating an entirely new universe... One in which she has never existed as a human, but only as a concept. Selflessly wishing for everybody's happiness - whereas Homura wishes she didn't. While Madoka thanks her for all she had done for her sake, giving her her red hair ribbons as memory for safekeeping, Homura cannot fully accept this new reality. She does fight on at first, honouring Madoka's wish within a world that has Wraiths instead of Witches, determined to defy anyone and anything that shall threaten her legacy... But this state isn't meant to last.
The long twintail-braids shy, timid Homura used to wear alongside her glasses, mirroring Madoka's red-ribboned twintails as a symbol of innocence, are merely a memory of who Homura Akemi is going to become. For the sake of her initial wish, for the sake of devotion and love that have turned into an obsession that doesn't allow much deviation. And her will to keep living in Madoka's universe is fragile - as she has to overcome temptation in the shape of shape-shifting Wraiths, showing her her beloved Madoka once more - just for example.
And eventually, despair takes over: Trapped within a Witches barrier inside of Homura's own Soul Gem, a world has formed that technically would have granted her biggest wish - a world in which Madoka exists happily alongside her and her/their friends, fighting together, living a peaceful life... But this world is just a facade as well, meant to lure the Goddess into a trap to regain power over the old Witch System of an alternate reality. And Homura, whose hair can never be turned back into braids again, who has lost her way and purpose, turned into a Witch and is ready to sacrifice herself if it means keeping Madoka safe once more. But even as she is, once again, mercifully saved by Madoka in the end in return in another act of selflessness - Homura's initial wish takes over. To be the one to save Madoka - in Homura's sense, means to stop her from being selfless for once, giving her the chance to live a normal life in another fake reality. It's Homura's, presumably, selfish desire in contrast to Madoka's - as they have truly become opposites in every single way. In order to fulfill her wish and become Madoka's sanctuary - even against her will -, she became a Devil to defy the Goddess' universe, following a corrupted form of love once born from the wish to protect the one most important to her. To maintain the image of Madoka she had formed in her head, regardless of whether that is what Madoka has eventually become and wished for by herself. And thus, she cannot wear Madoka's red ribbon, the sign of her legacy and innocence, anymore. A black dress and red eyes now have to face a white dress and golden eyes. The braids cannot return... At least not for now.
... Too long, didn't read: There is A LOT to work with, you already know all of this and yet, I am pretty sure I haven't been able to capture every aspect of them.
Whether I think why and how they’d work.
As mentioned, depending on timeline, universe, state of progression, their dynamic tends to be WILDLY DIFFERENT. You can take Moemura/Shy!Homura and OG!Madoka, you can take Cool!Homura and Anime!Madoka (and their various states in between), you can take EndofAnime!Homura and Madokami, you can take Rebellion!Homura and Rebellion!Madoka, Homucifer and Madokami and you can take Homucifer and FakeWorld!Madoka... The possibilities are ENDLESS (especially when you also include the more comedic-leaning portrayals in spin-off mangas like Homura Tamura).
The good part about this is - you can basically pick your poison, you can make this dynamic as wholesome or as toxic as you desire your own personal brand of Yuri to be. Which is, in my opinion, one of the aspects that make Madoka Magica and HomuMado in general so unbelievably intriguing.
Let's start with the toxic side of things, because I would argue that this is where Rebellion left us hanging and where Walpurgisnacht Rising might continue (at first): Homura's wish and her mingling created a very idealized version of Madoka in her head that she wishes to protect and maintain. Her initial thankfulness and endearment towards the kind, strong Madoka in the original timeline have basically been replaced by her unshaken desire to SAVE her. She has to be the one who (selfishly?) stops her from being selfless, she has to be the one to shield and protect her from any harm, keeping her locked in a precious glass bowl preferably nobody else can mess with. The problem here is that this version of Homura (which is basically Homucifer, but also several stages of her before that) cannot accept any other reading of reality than her own. Yes, in an ideal world, she could have allowed Madokami to finally take her away to exist with her in lesbian heaven for the rest of eternity - but that was not what Homura had wished for. And also probably not what Homura thought she deserved after everything she had done. In a way, having her turn into Homucifer was also some kind of self-chosen punishment as a "sinner"...
And Madoka, honestly speaking, probably had a very idealized version of Homura in her head as well. I'm not just talking about Rebellion!Madoka (or FakeReality!Madoka for that matter), whose memories had been tampered with, but also Madokami - who claimed to have seen all that Homura had done for her, in all timelines and realities... But apparently, she hadn't noticed her state of mind, her being so close to despairing and snapping because she just couldn't take this universe. That she couldn't let Mami or Kyouko in, no matter how hard they tried. She still felt alienated from them and lonely, thus she always reverted back to her initial goal, as she simply didn't belong into this universe. It kinda leads me to believe that it may be impossible for even Madokami to see Homura as anything other than the braided girl from the very beginning, her "best friend" from the original timeline.
Long story short - these two need to actually TALK for once. Getting to know their REAL CURRENT selves in whatever state or timeline that may be. Seriously, letting Madokami and Homucifer have a verbal conversation about all these misconceptions and misunderstandings about each other, talking about needs and desires and BOUNDARIES in a meta-kinda-way would be incredibly satisfying to watch. (And I am pretty sure, such scenarios exist in both fanfiction and doujins, but I haven't found them yet!)
Personally, I also highly enjoy the dynamic between Moemura and OG!Madoka - even after a few timelines have passed, as it has been depicted in the second season of the Magia Record anime. It gave me the impression that Homura had already gained a little bit of confidence and Madoka was still hands-on enough for them to be on a similar wavelength - which makes their dynamic among the healthiest in the entire franchise and gives them a lot of opportunities to bond and develop. For Homura to form a proper sense of self, encouraged by but not entirely dependent on Madoka. Actually, this version is also incredibly close to the Rebellion dream versions of Homura and Madoka - which, unsurprisingly, also is one of the most peaceful versions of them, having them sit together in a flower field, talking for hours about actual things. However, this Homura is still hyperfocusing on Madoka here - and it may not even have been her 100% authentic self, since her memories had been influenced by Homura's vision of her.
However, you have to allow them to talk and actually get to know each other and their flaws, let them banter and tease... Let Homura see and learn to accept undesirable aspects of Madoka - and let Madoka shout back at her if necessary. Deep down inside, they both adore and admire each other - which is why they were compatible in the original timeline in the first place. Homura admired Madoka for her strength, whereas Madoka admired Homura for her coolness. And they absolutely have the potential to help the other to become their best selves. But they need to see each other for who they really are and thus have to abandon codependent tendencies for it to work; Homura has to accept that Madoka is her own person who doesn't need to be overprotected - and Madoka has to accept that she cannot "save" Homura just by herself, but that she may encourage her to get therapy to deal with her self-image first. Let Homura understand that "love" also means to let go. Let her see that different people define "love" differently as well and that you have to understand how your significant other loves to love them back right.
Whether I’d prefer them as platonic or romantic ship.
When I had watched Madoka Magica for the first time approximately 10 years ago, I was positively - and obviously - in love with this ship and its potential. I adored Rebellion for how tragically it portrayed it - and again, I'm not even sure if I did them justice in comparison to everyone who wrote about them before me. As outlined above, it has various layers to pay attention to and I absolutely cannot wait to see how Walpurgisnacht Rising will add to my initial analysis of them. Because their dynamic WILL change, there is no denying.
Even after all this time, I still (want to) see the romantic potential between them. They may not be my favourite Madoka Magica ship anymore, but I still rate them very highly due to their complexity, my own nostalgia and hopefulness - although I'm aware that I would ship them in very idealized ways myself that are self-indulgently peaceful (and required a lot of therapy). As much as I want to see them get a happy end one way or another - I am currently very invested in exploring Madoka's and Homura's polycule potential dynamics with the other members of the Holy Quintet and am looking forward to writing more ship analysis posts soon!

What are your top 3 anime/manga?
okay i can't really do top three bc i'm so cripplingly indecisive but!!! allow me to ramble about my fav in each of three haphazardly decided categories for a bit.
fav manga - toilet bound hanako-kun
i am deeply in love with every part of this manga,,, except for the title unfortunately T-T i am forever a fan of emotion-based supernatural world-building. i love the relationships i love the art i love the gay pining and the heterosexual cringe,,,, truly my ideal piece of media aside from the fact that i can't talk about irl bc the title does in fact make it sound like a comic about the struggles of ibs.
fav current anime - welcome to demon school! iruma-kun!!
never before have i been so delighted by every minute of a show,,, i just finished catching up on the most recent season a few weeks ago bc i could not stand not to have unwatched episodes on-tap. stories about education and diversity being the most effective way to fight against fascism also just. affect me. as do the nonbinary catpeople. my only complaint is how little credit elizabetta's been getting but i have full confidence that she'll get her moment too. can't rush a good thing, etc. etc.
fav legacy anime - puella magi madoka magica
wherever i go,,, i always return,,, to Them. honestly there's nothing i could say about pmmm that someone else hasn't already said, but it really is one of the best written, most themed, and self-contained series that there's literally ever been. i cannot think of a single thing they could've done better or that didn't feel like a punch directly to the stomach. there are lesbians and magical girls transformations and comments on the plight of teenage girls living in a world crafted to exploit them. what more could you want.

I've been obsessing over this rendition of the Law of Cycles as a kinetic sculpture for a long time, so it's kind of embarrassing to realize there are actually ten witches here, not nine. (In my defense, one is so washed out, it's really hard to tell that there's anything there.) Fortunately, the Rebellion Production Note comes to the rescue again with Inu Curry's original artwork, which is even more interesting to me than the versions that made it into the movie.

Here the "constellation" of witches is juxtaposed with the organ in Oktavia's orchestra. Clockwise from upper right:
HN Elly the Box Witch (also known as Kirsten) from Episode 4;
Sayaka's witch Oktavia's crown made of swords
Nagisa's witch Charlotte's doll silhouettes from episode 3
Patricia (spider witch with the clothesline webs from Episode 10)
Albertine the Scribbling witch (who doesn't appear in the show, but Sayaka fights her familiar Anja in the alleyway before Kyouko turns up in episode 5)
Elsa Maria the Shadow Witch whom Sayaka fights in episode 7
Gertrud the Rose Witch from Episode 1-2
Roberta the birdcage witch that Homura encounters in a flashback in episode 10
Suleika- another witch who never appears directly in the show but Mami dispatches her shadow lion familiars at the beginning of episode 3
Izabel the Art Witch who ensnares Homura in episode 10
None of this is explained in the Rebellion Production Note, by the way; for the designs of the sigils and other information that doesn't appear in the original series, you have to go to the corresponding production notes in the official guidebook "You Are Not Alone Anymore", which somehow I had never seen before. As someone who generally believes works should stand on their own without requiring further research, I am mildly annoyed at once again having to comb through supplementary artbooks in order to interpret this diagram, but such is life as a Madoka Magica fan.
Suleika's name and sigil don't even appear in the guidebook, to the point where the only reason I figured it out was by the process of elimination and the fact that it's a flashlight making the same star-shaped shadows as the lion heads (which are called Ulla). Talk about hidden lore!
Anyway, these ten witches are the ones that I think are most likely to show up in Walpurgis no Kaiten in some fashion or another, with preference given to those who have the most screen time in the original series (Gertrud, Charlotte, Oktavia, Patricia). Those who never appear on-screen in the original series or who only have a very brief appearance, like Albertine, Roberta, and Suleika, are probably less likely to be featured in a larger role, just because the average audience member who doesn't have a PhD in Madoka Studies might not know/remember who they are, but we'll have to see; if nothing else, Inu Curry loves a good esoteric reference.
This is not to say that there won't be witches from other spinoffs in Walpurgis no Kaiten, given that fans have already spotted multiple Magia Record witches in the witch book in the second trailer, but blink-and-you'll-miss-it freeze frame Easter eggs for hardcore fans are an entirely different kettle of fish from meaningful roles. That said, Doroinu Curry directed the Magia Record anime, so, uh, suffice to say that they really, really like Magia Record and it's not surprising that they'd try to slip in as many references as possible. TBD. Patricia was also heavily featured in Magia Record 2x01, which is one reason I ranked her so high on my list.
One thing that's really fascinating about this "constellation" is that Walpurgisnacht is not present in the movie version, even though her elephants appear to pull a pumpkin carriage when the Law of Cycles comes to take Homura away. However, she is present in the artwork in the Rebellion Production Note in the form of the lace curtain above the organ, making her the "stage" upon which the performance takes place. Alternately, the curtain here could refer to Homulilly, who is also associated with lace and curtains, as most of Rebellion takes place in her labyrinth.
Metaphorically, Walpurgisnacht is the dark mirror to the Law of Cycles--both are conglomerations of witches represented by a single entity, but one offers salvation/relief/death while the other offers death and destruction. Given Madoka Magica's tendency to make its metaphors literal, I suspect the two are more closely related than we know, though the mechanics of how exactly that would work remains to be seen.
Another fun tidbit: the captions in the Rebellion Production Note suggest that the "spokes" connecting the witches to each other represent links by fate or some kind of other link that makes them compatible with each other. Thus, Oktavia is linked to Elly/Kirsten because Sayaka fought and destroyed her; Sayaka and Nagisa are partners on the mission to save Homura, but I'm very curious about the other connections there. What do Suleika and Izabel have in common?
Also, I know I've said this before, but wow, does the constellation echo the isolation field that Kyubey puts Homura's soul gem in, so there's something especially poetic about the one being used to destroy the other.
It's still incredible to me I've been in this fandom for four years now and I'm learning new things about Madoka Magica every day!
