Prompt: Taking place in Jackson, you wake up to find Joel having a bit of a crisis. (and yes i was listening to Hamilton when this idea came to me)

Look around, look around at how lucky we are

To be alive right now

You awaken from a restless sleep. You reach over to find a cold emptiness emanating from Joel’s side of the bed. “Joel?” you call out. Upon hearing nothing, you raise from your bed, throw on one of Joel’s shirts, and leave the room.

You start your search through the house, the only sound being the padding of your bare feet on the wooden floor. Upon coming downstairs, you see the kitchen light on and hear only soft mutterings “-shit- shit… get it together fucker”, followed by a sniffle, and a wavering breath so low it barely registers.

You quietly pad up to the kitchen counter, Joel so in his head about whatever is torturing him that he doesnt even notice you as you come right to his side. You reach towards his clenched fist, going slowly so as to not spook him, and upon feeling your feather-like touch on his hand, his fist instantly unclenches, letting you intertwine your fingers with his. “Hey baby”, says Joel, the words coming out more strangled than he initially thought. Clearing his throat, he continues; “I didn’t wake ya up did I?” he asks quietly, still not looking right at you. “No. No you’re good, big guy”, you reply, giving him a soft smile, wrapping your free hand around his arm and lightly rubbing patterns with your thumb. “I can’t really sleep though, if I know that you can’t. What’s wrong?” you ask, feeling his fist re-clench, but not as tight so as to not hurt you. 

“Stupid shit, baby”, he mumbles. “Nothing for you to worry about”. “Well since you made me your wife, you made it my job to worry about you. Whatever it is, it’s not stupid shit”. He smiles a little at that, the tightness in his chest easing little by little. 

“I don’t know. Lately-... seein’ Tommy and Maria happy, seeing how happy you n’ Ellie are here, got me thinking about Sarah… wonderin’ if she’d be happy here”. The last part comes out in a whisper, fresh tears making their way down his cheeks. “Oh, Joel”, are the only words that you can muster, as you pull Joel into the tightest hug you can manage. You sink to the ground together, Joel pulling you into his lap and burying his face in your neck.

You stay like that for a while, running your fingers through his salt-and-pepper curls, rubbing his back in soothing circles. “Joel, honey. Look at me” you urge gently, moving your hands to his face, tilting his head so that he was eye level with you. Rubbing the tears from his cheeks, you continue, “Honey, she would be happy to see that you’re still here. How you’ve managed to survive this long, how many people you’ve saved, how we’ve managed to stay together.”

“I know baby... Just sometimes I get in my head and shit goes downhill. Makes me wonder if you would be happier with someone else.” he mumbles. “Hell no.” you cut him off before he can go any further, “I married you Joel Miller, and nothing about you would change my mind about that. I don’t and can’t begin to understand how you manage to go about your day the way you do, but you don’t have to do it alone. I know the man I married and I love every part of him. As long as you come back to me at the end of the day, that would be enough”.

the other day I tried to start this book and the first page was a content warnings list which, yeah alright, fine. (I will say, despite the fact that I am ideologically in support of content warnings, seeing them in a published work does automatically ping my "oh I'm gonna hate something about this work" geiger counter.) but then the next couple of pages was... a book playlist. as in, every chapter got 1-3 songs and it was all shit I was entirely unfamiliar with or familiar enough with to get a Vibe, ykwim

but I pushed past the alarm bells in my head and tried to read the book itself. because it was a romance about two serial killers! I mean, come on, of course I'm going to give it a chance! I barely made it through the first chapter before hittin the "delete from library" button.

idk what to call this particular narrative voice except the "this used to be a fanfic and it reads like one" voice, and I call it that because of Fifty Shades of Grey, because if you are in any way familiar with how that book reads then you know exactly what I mean. this book had that. and the male serial killer had "golden retriever vibes", which, okay, trope subversion, I guess? but... ew?

this is a shame, because the content warnings were pretty damn good (as befitting a book about murderers, yknow). I did consider skipping ahead to find to the sex scenes but instead I chose to wisely assume that there are hornyposts on my dashboard that are way hotter than whatever that book could have given me

I find it really sad when proshippers partake in "cringe culture" so to speak. you can't build your platform on anti-harassment and then make fun of people for being into something you deem stupid/trash/etc.

Like, I know in my mind that proshipping is more about anti-censorship and being pro "darker" stuff so to speak, and that it's not REALLY built on "we shouldn't make fun of people for reading/watching Stupid Stuff" but shouldn't the two be connected? I'd honestly argue that the latter argument is a stepping stool to the former?

Because how can you reblog "all ships are good ships" "ship and let ship" and then make fun of someone for being for an adult who still ships Steven Universe characters? How can you post "RPF is fine" but then make fun of that person on stan twitter who's a bit too into kpop rpf?

just makes me sad. The people who have made fun of me for the most for my MCU hyperfixation are my fellow proshippers. I've unfollowed people for posting book-tok screenshots that are clearly just mocking the OP for the fact that they read Colleen Hoover or whatever.

And I'm not talking about privately shittalking something, or just hating something in general; I'm not not even really talking about laughing at the *media/media creator itself* and criticizing it. I mean, I myself still laugh at the "read another book" Harry Potter meme (which, if i really need to add a disclaimer, i am DEFINITELY not talking about people who think it's weird and fucked up af that some people still like JKR as a person because. . .how can you at this point?). Moreso I mean people who claim to be SOOOO anti harassment and SOOOO pro-all-forms-of-art-even-'bad'-art (whether the art be bad in a moral way or in a creative way, whatever "art" "bad" "moral" and "creative" even MEAN because it changes with everyone.)

Obviously no one is going to like every single piece of art ever, and it's, imho, really human to be a "hater" to some degree! I just have a problem when someone genuinely makes fun of the FANS of something or thinks that someone is less intellectual just because the someone in general likes Disney/Twilight/Taylor Swift/Hamilton/whatever. No one gives af if you think a certain writing or acting style is cringe, but if you think the fans are cringe, that says more about you than it does about the fandom.

(also as a send off -- all the 'yous' i said here were general, def not directed at anyone on this blog. I'm just venting and this seems like the best place to do so where people will agree with my words.)

your fingers press down on the keys as you hum softly to the sound, smiling slightly to yourself. music has always been an incredible comfort for you, especially piano. having being taught by your dad at such a young age, the iconic instrument has always held a special place in your heart.

your girlfriend adored watching you play, the way your fingers masterfully dart across the instrument and effortlessly play the most calming or complex tunes never failed to make her heart swell. your music soon became a comfort to her as well and she often found herself asking you to play songs for her. and you would always oblige, anything to make your girl happy.

while the piano will always be your first love, alessia stole your heart.

“didn’t anyone ever tell you it was rude to stare, russo?”

she exhales in a laugh as you turn around from the piano to meet her gaze. she’s stood in the doorframe, tea in hand, watching you with stars in her eyes.

“sorry, maestro. you’re just too beautiful for your own good.”

you roll your eyes playfully, but you cant fight off the blush on your face.

“calm down, less. i’m already your girlfriend.”

her face lights up impossibly more, she never gets bored of the constant reminder that you are hers, whether you’ve been together for 20 years, or 1. she still gets giddy.

“i can’t help it! something about you just.. effects me.”

she over-exaggerates a wink. immediately creating a laugh from you at her ridiculous nature.

“down, girl.”

you both just smile at each other before her gaze slowly drifts from you to the piano in-front of you.

“learnt anything new today?”

you sigh as you look away from her in slight frustration.

“i’m trying, but these composers don’t make it easy.”

she moves away from the doorframe and comes up behind you, placing her hand on your back in comfort as her brow furrows in thought.

“could you teach me how to play?”

your head instantly snaps up toward her, a little hopeful gleam in your eyes that makes her heart flutter.

“you want to learn? which song?”

she thinks for a minute, scouring her brain for ideas before deciding on one that she heard from you the other day.

“that one song i like, from that musical hamilton, i think?”

you smile at her and shuffle over on the seat, patting the newfound space, gesturing for her to sit. she puts her tea down and quickly attempts to sit next to you, but with the seat being so cramped, she’s practically sat on you.

“it’s called dear theodosia. here, let me teach you.”

you grab her hands with your own, and guide them to the correct keys. you attempt to position her fingers correctly, in hopes that she can play the correct chords. it takes at least 4 tries until she plays it correctly, and you feel your heart swell with adoration at the gleeful smile on her face as she does.

“so i just repeat them in sequence? what if i make a mistake?”

somehow, she’s navigated herself fully into your lap with you barely noticing. she turns her head in question before blushing at the lovestruck look in your eyes. you simply nod at her, kissing her cheek lightly.

“that’s okay, it’ll help you learn. go ahead, try it.”

she inhaled deeply, suddenly intensely focused as she begins to move her fingers across the keys in the way that you’ve taught her.

it’s almost perfect (she’s still a beginner, bless her). despite the mistakes, the familiar tune is unmistakable and you can’t help but grin at hearing one of your favourite songs. you move to rest your chin on her shoulder as you ever so lightly hum the words of the song.

alessia swears that this moment is akin to a dream, the comfort of your presence and voice as she attempts to focus on the keys. she’s so overwhelmed with her emotions that she loses the tune, unable to focus.

“awh, baby. that’s okay, you actually did so amazing for your first try.”

she shakes her head as she turns in your lap so she’s straddling you and leans in to press a kiss to your lips. you fight off your smile as you reciprocate the affection, placing your hands on her waist. the kiss begins to deepen as alessia moves her hands through your hair. she leans back but ultimately leans too far, as the sound of her back hitting the piano keys is enough to break the both of you apart. you both laugh at how carried away you were.

“anyway, i want to learn nocturne next!”

There weren’t a lot of things that could set Oscar off. He was stable, consistent, unbothered. It was something that everyone around him noted, and he took pride in it. 

If there was one thing, however, it would be pre-season testing. Don’t get him wrong—he loved the track, loved racing, and that first lap in the car after the off season was always exhilarating. 

It was the stuff after the rush that was unbearable, the hours of data analysis, fussing with equipment, and random runs on track. The time where you discover two things: 

1.) The car is shit. (Except, of course, you’re a Redbull driver, which Oscar is not.) 

2.) Nobody knows what they’re doing. 

These complaints resonated throughout, well, the entire grid. Nobody wanted to listen to engineers talk about something they didn’t understand while nodding at what seemed like the right times and trying not to go insane. 

So, in true racing driver fashion, they designed a competition. 

The premise of the game was simple: whoever could slip the most song lyrics into casual conversation without being noticed is the winner. The only rules were no teaming up, no quoting casual phrases (it has to be obnoxious), and if you get called out five minutes or less after quoting, you’re eliminated.

-DAY ONE-

The first person Oscar sees when he arrives on track is Lewis, walking down the pit lane. As he passes the commentary box, his eyes latch onto something--or someone-- inside. There’s something unreadable in his expression, something Oscar's never seen before. 

He thinks about it, walking towards the Mclaren garage. There's only two people commentating today, and only one of those people mean something to Lewis Hamilton. Nico Rosberg, 2016 F1 World Champion, and Lewis' ex-teammate, rival, sort-of-kind-of-not-really lover. It's not a secret within the grid--both parties aren't exactly subtle, as recently demonstrated. 

When he steps into the hospitality and finds one beaming Lando Norris, he tells him as much. Lando grins, and points: 'I know someone even less subtle.' 

Behind them, at the entrance of the Redbull garage, stand Charles and Max, engaged in conversation. He's not quite sure what they're discussing, but it involves a lot of hand-waving and exaggerated expressions. 

(Although, he supposes, Charles and Max always look like they're in the middle of a presidential debate.) 

At that moment, Zak calls them over, urging everyone into a meeting room. It's wholly pointless, just a lot of emotional speech and encouragement for the coming year, even if it comes in the form of trashing last year's car. 

Oscar seizes the opportunity: straight-faced, he says, 'Just because it didn't work, doesn't mean it's meaningless to me. Just wasn't meant to be.' 

He gets a few strange expressions from the crew around him--Lando included--but Zak says, without missing a beat, 'That's right. THREE CHEERS FOR MCLAREN!' and the attention is, thankfully, taken off him. 

He silently thanks Zak Brown and his endless optimism.

It’s only after the first session ends and Oscar is listening to radio replays--one of his favourite pastimes, both because of the data and because of the entertainment he gets from it—that he realizes a good amount of the grid has gotten a lot more done than he has. 

It seems that, during the several runs used to collect aero data, the drivers took it upon themselves to throw quotes at their engineers through the radio. 

The engineers that were completely oblivious of their shenanigans, and hence unaware of the game. 

(Looking back, he should have expected this. It was completely in character for the grid to find loopholes in any situation.) 

A few highlights: 

Valtteri saying, voice wistful, 'And it’s been ages, different stages…'

Alex, proclaiming 'I WANT IT THAT WAY!'

Charles, completely emotionless, 'Am I the only, only believer?' 

Lewis, telling Bono 'You and me got a whole lotta history.' 

Pierre, complaining, 'I’m like a boat on the water.' 

And, finally, Logan, who came through with a beautiful 'You’re turning heads when you walk through the door.' When someone asked if their hair was standing up. 

By the end of it, Oscar’s had enough. He pulls up Google, and, face determined, starts researching song lyrics. 

(In the back of his head, he wonders, slightly hysterically, what this sport has come to.) 

Will possibly maybe probably have a part 2?? If I have the motivation??

Hey! My names zen!

I have a friend named Sammy! They are an axolotl

I'm a little silly.. in like a special way ig-

I'm not really a people fan, but if your kind so am I!

I live on the streets and sometimes have to dig through trash if I can't find birds or rats to eat :(

I loved punk rock/ all rock when I was human, and I still do!

I have to say my favorite bands are blink, 9 inch nails, and mcr!

I really like musicals, yes I am a theater kid.. I love the Heather's, ways to chill, Hamilton, beetle juice, and mean girls!

I do get overwhelmed with loud sounds, so please be quite and patience with me!
