Today Critical Role's development and production company, Metapigeon, has announced the acquisition of the narrative podcast Midst. Midst is a semi-improvised audio drama that already has two seasons under its belt with a third on the way. While Critical Role has expanded multiple times in recent years into their publishing branch Darrington Press, creating board games such as Uk'otoa and Till The Last Gasp, and into animation with the first two seasons of The Legends of Vox Machina available to stream on Amazon Prime this is the first time that Critical Role has purchased an existing entertainment IP and brought it under their umbrella. The first three remastered episodes will release for free via Critical Role's YouTube channel on April 11th, 12th, and 13th.
——
I am so intrigued with this direction for Critical Role and the expansion of Metapigeon as a production and distribution channel.
I have been wondering what CR would do for additional content.
It felt like, especially after the pandemic the cast have been exceptionally busy in other projects but also as I was going down the line of CR’s other shows, I felt like it wasn’t sustainable to always rely on the same cast members to always be hosting different shows or playing games.
But also, Critical Role didn’t have to play the same grind and hustle wheelhouse twitch streamers seemed to find themselves trapped in. They already have a dedicated audience, and as Kevin Kelly once wrote sometimes all you need is 1,000 true fans.
At the same time, they do still need to produce videos/content to keep an audience engaged.
This feels like a good direction CR is heading towards, it is in line with their brand, and doubling down on their statement about uplifting indie creators. Something they’ve said before and reiterated during the whole OGL fiasco. Marisha and Matt weren’t just offering lip service to Linda Codega.
I wondered when Worlds Beyond Number was released with its fantastic audio design if Critical Role will also do something similar but re-releasing Midst and producing its season 3 feels like such a good first step in both expanding and also helping indie creators get boosted.
Midst is also on brand because it seems to be a fantastic narrative story with semi-improvisation.
But also, I hope Marisha will talk about the thought process of adding Midst to CR’s stable of content. I loved when Marisha (in Google Talks) discussed how she broke down what made CR popular and created shows towards that.
Adding in another show is also going to give the CR cast members more bandwidth, while also giving fans something new.
I’m looking forward to all the lore and artwork this new show will add!

cr3 is gonna end and the pc’s still feel like the same people to me :|
(crcritical content in the tags feel free to skip)
#cr spoilers#cr critical#the pacing of this campaign was shot to shit from the start and i really hope mercer learns from this and takes it into account for cr4#i actually think they need to do mini seasons like d20 does. not in the way that they’re all completely separate from one another but#the way the unsleeping city had multiple seasons or a crown of candy or fantasy high. connected arcs in a bigger story#it would give mercer more time to plan and pace things and would give both cast and crew more time to prepare things#bc this campaign was. frantic. just full speed ahead with no breathing room. it’s a marathon sprint#i still feel like the initial assault on the key was like. maybe a few months ago#IT WAS A YEAR!!!!#what do you MEAN this campaign took place over five months!!! these people don’t know each other!!!! I don’t know them!!!!!!#VM knew each other for YEARS TM9 traveled for a YEAR together#CR3 viewers have been talking about a time skip happening as though it’s a guarantee!!! TM9 didn’t end with a time skip and guess what!!#It was a good ending!!! Maybe a few loose threads but they were easily touched upon later with no issues#like idk ppl are allowed to like or even love cr3 i have no issue with that. i just think that from a storytelling perspective it’s just#so poorly paced and i think both fans and players deserve better than to be thrown into world ending stakes immediately#the initial assault on the malleus key felt like an endgame event and it was like fifty episodes in. Tm9 got to xhorhas around episode 50#characters deserve time to marinate. cr3 is a pressure cooker#don’t even get me started on braius’ inclusion. sam i’m sure your character is cool and complicated but he’s been here for like 20 eps#i dont know this man#also i feel like shorter seasons/separate arcs woven together would account more for people’s personal lives and any medical issues#like what happened with sam. ppl were hounding him asking for his return meanwhile he was being treated for CANCER like I can’t imagine#dealing with that kind of pressure. players deserve privacy however they can get it.#(also fgc’s death is to me the only narratively satisfying thing to happen in cr3 i’m not kidding#fucking perfect setup and execution. exquisitely done on mr riegel’s part#laudna has also had some great story beats along with imogen but i think matt fucked up making delilah come back i really do)#anyway all the love to the cr crew and cast if you see this ily and your stories i just think pacing needs to be taken into account#“they’re just friends sitting at a table playing dnd” i don’t think they are anymore actually#obviously they’re still friends playing dnd but like. cr3 feels so produced and i dont mean that in a good way :[ it feels so corporate#off topic i am SO FUCKING EXCITED for the switch to daggerheart! I think it’ll really breathe some new light and life into exandria!!!

one of most frustrating media experiences is when you really like a relatively obscure piece of media and then it gets an adaptation thats like. fine on its own but its terrible as an adaptation but its on tv or a streaming service so its more readily available to a wider audience which results in the bad adaptation ending up with way more fans than the original
#you all know what this is about. BUT. its also about archive 81. i will literally never forgive netflix for that#a81 youtube is just. useless now. youre lucky to find one (1) cool animatic from the podcast amidst stupid netflix theory videos. guh.#and all the new fans are either completely unaware or completely uninterested in the source bc its not as readily available/digestable#so im just like. having to excuse all the rough stuff of the og while begging people to engage with it#like okay yes a81 doesnt have professional actors or whatever like netflix so the vo kinda sucks a lot but PLEASE god.#cr c1 has so many issues and its really long but i am On My Knees Begging#etc

I sewed a Wolfkiller Cloak!
I have been a fan of Lestat's Wolfkiller Cloak for 30 years(!!) so when it made a surprise appearance in season 2 of Interview with the Vampire I just knew I would be sewing one for myself.
It looks incredible in the show, but then we also got to see more of it in better lighting during the short, behind the scenes "Episode Insider" for the episode. Essentially, this is a calf-length, blood-red velvet cape with an additional, elbow-length capelet on top, and a fur-lined hood.
But having made capes in the past, I realised that they are really impractical to wear due to limited arm mobility and having either your arms or body freeze through the openings.
So instead of sewing exactly what I saw on screen, I realised I could instead sew a swing coat + little capelet on top with fur-lined hood! And even better - make the capelet removable via hooks at the neckline so that they could be worn together or separately. This was a Eureka! moment for me. I wanted to make something that is somewhat authentic to the look of the original, but also practical to wear as an every day winter coat!
After quite a few muslins, I settled on the Charm Patterns Swing Coat (with some modified sleeves), and a self-drafted capelet (similar to my earlier cape from Claudia S1 NYE look) with a fur-lined hood. I drafted the hood pieces so that the fur lining is longer and wraps around the opening edge. This makes the fur more visible when its down around the shoulders, as in the show.
I used 5m of burgundy velvet and 0.5 m of Arctic Grey Wolf faux fur from CRS Fabrics (UK) - the fur itself was £60/m(!!) so I'm extremely pleased the show version wasn't entirely lined in fur like the book description (scroll down for more on that!). I underlined it for warmth using cotton flannel to block the wind, and found an incredible dark grey skull jacquard lining fabric at Mood Fabrics (US).
The swing coat pattern only has one button at the neck, so I made it count! I found the most perfect wolf head button on ebay and adjusted my bound buttonhole accordingly, but it really is the best statement button I could've ever asked for! The rest of the front opening is closed with enamel hooks and hidden thread bars to not distract from the clean lines when worn open.
In all, this took me about 6 weeks to sew and I am SO chuffed with how it turned out. I usually only take daytime photos for my sewing in order to best show off the details and seamlines, but for this I couldn't resist an additional nighttime shoot, too.
Even better - after I posted it to Instagram, the costume designer for the show, Carol Cutshall, not only said she loves it, but revealed a new piece of iwtv lore - they originally tried the cloak entirely lined in fur, but it was too heavy for Sam to move in!! (Which I can totally believe because mine is super heavy even with a lightweight lining!)
#in my head Sam asked to take the prototype home as the world’s nerdiest weighted blanket#wolfkiller cloak#I don’t do cosplay I just love sewing#this isn’t even for Halloween it’s just good timing#iwtv#interview with the vampire#the vampire lestat#lestat de lioncourt#iwtv costume design#iwtv fandom#sewing#carol cutshall you are a goddess#iwtv s2

I wasn't sure about writing this post.
Even right now, as I am writing, I still don't know if I will actually post this or just add it to my drafts as nothing more than a personal vent. Regardless, I guess that if I am here I just need to talk about this.
So let's talk.
The way the FNDM has been acting all defeated all month long has really grown to annoy me, and I am tired.
RWBY's future is unsure right now, and all this uncertainty is painful. My feelings are all over the place, swinging from terror and sadness to hope, all the time. I constantly check Kerry's and RWBY's Twitter page in hope to find any kind of news.
I can't give you a certain answer because, again, this is all uncertain. But that also means that there's still hope.
My point is, acting as if we have already lost isn't going to help anyone. Not RWBY, not CRWBY, and not ourselves, the fans who love this show so dearly.
I don't know what is going to happen, but I know that I refuse to stand around and do nothing. It's why I keep checking for news, why I am playing the show both on rooster teeth and crunchyroll all the time for views (I think that on CR I already replayed the whole series at least twice). It's why I am spamming tags, and being loud about my love, and looking and sharing all RWBY and CRWBY posts to give engagement, why I am watching every rwby_vt live on twitch.
I want to know what is going to happen more than anything, not knowing is killing me, but at same time I am terrified of the answer. Despite that, and despite my feelings swinging all around, I am still choosing to have hope.
Hope is a conscious choice, and a brave one. Because I know that being pessimistic is easier, it avoids setting us up for disappointment... but if we rob ourselves of the chance that things could turn out alright then all we're doing is decrease the chance that it will happen, and just anticipate our pain and disappointment.
As Yang said, no hope means we have already lost, and that's not the case. CRWBY, Kerry, is working really hard to save RWBY. Acting defeated already isn't just a disservice to us, but to them specifically and to everything they are currently doing. It's like telling them that it's all useless, that they've already lost, and I find that insulting. I refuse to. They deserve to see that we care and believe in them.
RWBY is THE show about hope. Shouldn't we follow the example?

ok the stick story is this
according to The Hockey Media, who as we know do not actually follow any teams closely so know NOTHING, ovechkin was finally hit by father time. he's finally slowing down. he's a shell of his old self. he has old man syndrome. blah blah blah
as a caps fan, i know that this is false, because our russian machine never break. he's a freak. who btw had like 13 goals disallowed or something crazy like that in the first half of last season but i digress
gee i wonder why ovechkin's goals went down? is it because his longtime center and future hall of famer nicklas backstrom retired in all but name? is it because our other top 6 center in evgeny kuznetsov had by far the worst season of his career (from point a game to not even half a point a game) and then went into the player's assistance program before being traded to the canes and then bolting for the KHL?
actually, as it turns out: no.
i mean probably those were factors, but there was another factor. a factor that many caps fans are very aware of but almost no one reported on for some reason (probably because they were too busy writing about how SiDneY CrOsBy was having SuCh an AmaZiNg season for a 36 year old despite ovechkin literally having just as a good a season the year prior at the *checks notes* age of 36. also this is a reminder that one of those two actually led their team to a playoff berth and it wasn't crosby)
ovechkin is, among other things, an elite shooter. like many elite shooters, he is EXTREMELY picky about his sticks. he has been using the same CCM model for the last 7 seasons...and prior to this season they discontinued it.
the first half of the season (roughly), ovi was constantly trying out new sticks from CCM, from Bauer, whoever. he tried quite a few different sticks. results: 8 goals in 43 games.
then, ovechkin found an independent supplier. apparently (i can't remember where this info came out, maybe 32 thoughts?), these guys have an "ovi pro curve" model based on his old stick with CCM and he bought it and tried it out. curve was identical, and it felt right to him. started using those. results: 23 goals in 36 games.
am i saying that he is going to continue on that pace this coming season? probably not. do i think that the rumors of his demise as a goal scorer are greatly exaggerated and almost surely mistaken? yes. am i optimistic that with some stability in our center depth and stability in stick choice, ovechkin will have a 40 goal season again and possibly break wayne gretzky's all time goals record? YES.
what this means for PLD our beloved failhorse wife: he's not getting some washed up old man former great on his wing. he's getting the greatest fucking goal scorer in the history of the sport. and i, for one, am excited to see what they can do together.
link i thought about this all morning during baking and while i was out!! thank you for the stick explanation and all the sources i LOVE citations i am eating them up like theyre cakes at teatime....! more under the cut but heres what i was thinking about when i read this:
thinking about how,, particular some players get about their equipment, how superstitious, it's crazy to me that a manufacturer can just do all that. if it were me and MYE special stick got discontinued id be suing for damages
i was super interested in what actually changed in the second half of the season because i saw ovechkin was back to scoring basically at-will again, so really thank you for explaining.. the bond between a hockey and their stick is so beaugtiful <3
cr-sby is my babygirl-in-law and i fear i will always be fond of him because of this, so i shall tread carefully here (pens friends look away) it DOES suck that they're not recognising your old man for his achievements while that old man gets hyped. is it like, weird anti-russian sentiment? or a more general anti-caps bias? every team fan space i dip into feels unfairly maligned one way or another - which, yeah! clenching my fist of rage.......
you spin such a tale and im VERY excited to see how next szn shakes out in light of all this and also . grabbing dubois by the scruff of his neck like i will stan either way but PLEASE dont embarrass me in front of my cool new friends kjlasdklasdkl....
thank you so much for stopping by and for the warmest welcome ever <3
#capsblr vibes go so hard?? literally i love interacting with you guys. i love essays in my asks! please dont stop this is so fun <3#off-season aint even that bad!!! ive met so many cool new people :>#washington capitals#alexander ovechkin#pierre luc dubois#<- am i like.. his entire tag at this point? failhorse connoisseur !#long post#user lonewolflink#asks

As someone who hasn't watched majority of c1, reading your thoughts on how tlovm compares is really interesting! I've been in the fandom since c3 began and have seen all of c2 and c3, and I've picked up a lot context.
However, I watch tlovm with a friend who has only seen tlovm at all (and like, 1 hour of exu calamity e1 that we never continued lol, so he did recognise Zerxeus' name). From his perspective of seeing the show as it is on it's own, he's been having a great time, something I do think speaks to the strength of this adaptation - that one of the things CR set out to do was to make something that stood on it's own, and I think they've succeeded in that.
How do you feel on that aspect of tlovm?
I agree - I think a lot of the criticism does come down to disappointment that we're not seeing some of the peak moments of Campaign 1, and I want to be clear that I share some aspects of that disappointment! It is just that like, again, I don't see how you make a scripted show where A Bard's Lament hits if you haven't seen the original, or where Glintshore hits in the same way at all.
I've been thinking about this a lot because I have gotten into some things for which I am unfamiliar with the original/prior installments through mutuals. For example, I have now read some of The Wheel of Time series (gotta get back into it) but I watched the show without any sentimentality for the original, and I think many people who haven't liked it have been mad about changes from the books, not how the TV story holds up. Similarly, I'm very intrigued by Veilguard despite zero past knowledge of basically anything Dragon Age, and I know a lot of longtime fans in particular are mad about changes. The challenge of adaptation, or further installments, is to straddle that line of appealing to new fans and old fans alike. And it's possible - I think TLOVM could have done some things better, but I'm here and I'm not mad about it and while I cannot claim OG C1 fan status I was around in time to have watched C1 and backed the kickstarter, but at the same time it's clearly working for people unfamiliar with the source.
I don't think you should totally abandon everything old fans liked about a series; but the fact is, old fans are a spectrum ranging from people who will love it no matter what because it's their blorbos some more! to people who will nitpick the fact that a specific phrase they have an emotional attachment to didn't appear, and everyone in between. You can't gain more old fans; you can only lose them. And in the end, you should tell a story that works for the medium and what you are trying to do. That doesn't mean every series or adaptation is good, to be clear; I think people who hate on Game of Thrones are 100% valid and not just bitter ASOIAF fans, and we all know that the MCU's attempt to build both a coherent universe but also be accessible to new fans turned it into an absolute trainwreck. But I think that an adaptation should not only be the original but in a new medium, and it should be something a new viewer would enjoy, and yes, I think TLOVM achieves that.

Graceland Experience - PART 5
Fandom: Elvis/Elvis (2022)
Prompt: The next stop you need to make is one to the library to find out if you have any chance of making your way back home. Then, you explore Elvis' room.
TW: Brief mention of sex, mention of sex toys and objects, implied smoking, profanity
Word Count: 2801
A/N: Sorry for the slow burn with this series guys, but it will be worth it!
"Hey, I'm sorry about last night. I just really thought you were a nutcase, Y'know?" Sonny laughs nervously before shoveling a plateful of food in his mouth.
Everyone at the table looks to the two of you. You, Sonny, Elvis, and Jerry all sit at the kitchen table. You are surprised that they let you sit to breakfast with them, but they've all seemed to accept the fact that you're not crazy. They still look at you with curiosity. You're the exciting new topic in the house. The girl with amnesia.
You absolutely hate it.
"Yeah, it's fine," you say quickly, focusing now on your plate of food, trying not to make eye contact with anyone.
"I mean, you really had me goin' there," he laughs.
Annoyed, you pick at your food refusing to respond. There is an awkward beat as everyone turns back to their food.
"Thought you were just batshit cr-"
"Sonny! Fuck off," Elvis grumbles, not amused.
Your body flushes in embarrassment. Looking across the table to Elvis, he meets your gaze, his cheeks flushed with anger.
You quickly look away.
God, how you wished there was another girl in this house. Most of the time, it's just the boys.
"Right," Sonny snaps, clearly offended.
Silence again.
You look over at Jerry. It's so odd, he's just a teenager. You recall all of the photos you've seen of his as an older man, and it's surreal. You watch as he makes a joke to Elvis, trying to win his approval. Elvis chuckles. Jerry's eyes light up as he shoves a forkful of eggs in his mouth.
It's so surreal.
After another moment, you let your gaze wander around the room. You haven't really had the chance to see it since you've been here. The house is buzzing. It's so full of life. This is what you've dreamed of.
You can feel someone watching you.
Looking back to the table, Elvis is watching you intently, like he's trying to read your mind. When he catches your eye, he doesn't look away. Instead he gives you a curious look, lingering.
You clear your throat in thought. Should you say something?
"So, do fans line up outside your door all the time?" You ask.
Stupid question.
Everyone looks at you again. Everyone looks dumbstruck by your question, like you don't live in 1961.
"Are you kiddin' me?! Every day! They love Elvis, it's almost scary. Gosh you aren't a fan are you?" Jerry suddenly pipes up, teenage boy energy bursting.
Your face flushes.
"No! I am obviously, you're amaz-" you start, then stop.
Elvis gives a smug grin, crossing his arms.
"I mean-."
Oh God, stop talking.
Before anyone can comment further, Elvis speaks up, sparing you the spotlight.
"Yeah, I really appreciate all the love. I don't deserve it sometimes."
"Aw, c'mon E, sure you do! Hey, remember those two girls that mailed themselves to the house? That was crazy, man. Now they were batshit. But they were cute girls. You're so lucky, you can get all the tail you want. And you did get some action with one of 'em right? Or was it both?"
Well, there's that. Elvis' cheeks flush as he shoves Jerry by his shoulder.
"Jer, come on, there's a lady at the table."
Jerry glances over at you looking like a dog with his tail caught between his legs.
"Oh, right. Sorry ma'am."
You tell him it's okay as you try not to laugh.
---
"Hey, Elvis?" You ask, catching up with him after breakfast as Sonny and Jerry go outside to the stables, him following closely behind.
Elvis turns to you.
"Yeah, what's up, honey?"
You hesitate. It might be a risk.
"Do you remember asking me if there is anything I needed last night?"
"Yes, I remember."
Here goes nothing.
"I was actually wondering if I could get a ride to the library."
"The library? I don't see why not. If you want some books, you can write down which ones you want and I have a guy that goes out and gets things for me."
That won't exactly work. You don't want written evidence of you requesting time travel books.
"Well, I actually wanted to go myself."
He gives you a sideways glance.
"Are you sure that would be a good idea? Don't you need some rest for your memory?"
"I think it might be good if I go out. Maybe it could help jog a few things in my mind."
Good thinking.
"Hm, maybe you're right. It seems you got some memory back. At least I know you're a fan," he teases, winking at you.
Your cheeks burn as you look to the ground. There's a brief awkward silence.
He clears his throat before continuing.
"Well I can't go with ya, but I'll tell Sonny to give you a ride. How does this afternoon sound?"
"That sounds amazing. Thank you."
---
Getting into the car with Sonny, you're suddenly nervous. You are about to go out in public in 1961. You still partially believe you are in some crazy dream. You look down at your outfit, making sure you look the part, and you do. You are wearing a simple pink shift dress. You aren't usually one to wear a ton of dresses, but you certainly can't wear your usual clothing now. And you have to admit to yourself that you are starting to enjoy wearing these dresses. Elvis had some ordered to the house once he realized you might be at Graceland for more than a few days.
"Hey, uh, I know I said it already, but I am sorry for acting that way last night. Just been high strung the past few days, I guess," Sonny says awkwardly as he starts the car.
"It's okay. I understand, I don't blame you, really. No one knows me here," you relent, looking out the window.
"Yeah. You don't seem too bad, though. It's been nice I guess having something to focus on. It was startin' to get boring around here. Elvis hates boring," he laughs, the southern drawl peeping out of his voice.
You hadn't noticed it before.
You aren't sure how you feel about Sonny taking you to the library, you aren't sure if you like him yet, but he was your only option and you had to take the opportunity.
Sonny turns the car, heading for the back of the house, to your surprise. The front entrance leaving your line of view.
"I thought we were going out the front way."
At this, Sonny gives a genuine laugh.
"No, honey, we almost never use the front entrance. Do you know how many people are out there? Hundreds. We wouldn't get to the library before it closes."
You turn your body as you try to look and see if you can get a glimpse of the fans out front, but it's too late, the entrance is already out of sight.
---
When you get inside the library, it's quiet. There are a few people wandering around, but other than that it's empty. It's not so different from a modern library, except there are no computers. Only books. It's insane to see. Everyone you see are either in dresses or the men in slacks. Some men wearing hats. You see an older man with a hat covering his face as he nods in an out of sleep on a chair in the corner of the non-fiction section. It's all so different and yet, somehow not.
You were preparing for Sonny to come in with you, which would be a challenge to hide what you're getting from him, but he said he'd stay in the car if you wouldn't take too long.
You make your way to the fiction section as you start your search. you hope they have something here that can help you. As you look through the limited selection, you're about to give up when you see A Sound of Thunder by Ray Bradbury. You remember seeing this book while you were writing a paper about the author in high school. You pluck it out of its place and turn it to the back cover, skimming over the words.
Ah, yes. A man who travels back in time and discovers even small actions have big consequences. You make a mental note of that. You decide to pick out a random book as well in case anyone asks you what you got. Looking for a romance, you see a booked called Loyal and All by Mary Burchell. After taking a quick skim of the back, it looks to be up your alley.
You're about to head to the check out when one more catches your eye. A pebble in the sky. Hm. You pick it up and read the back. A man is accidentally sent to the future. Similar to your situation, only you went to the past. This could give some insight.
You decide to pick that one as well as you head to the front. A gentle looking older woman greets you.
"Hello, dear. Did you find what you were looking for today?" She asks pleasantly.
You smile.
"Yes, thank you. Just these three please," you say in return, placing the books on the table.
She glances at them.
"Ah, time travel. I love hearing those stories. I wonder if it will ever come to be one day. I would like to go back and see Louis Armstrong in his prime. I love that man's voice."
You laugh to yourself. That's what you thought about Elvis about a week ago. Now you don't know what to think.
"I'll need to see your library card, dear."
Shit. A library card.
"Oh, I don't have one, I just moved here recently," you say a little too quickly.
She doesn't seem to take note of it.
"Not a problem! I'll just have you fill out this paper and you can take these home with you today."
A paper. Then you think of the butterfly effect. Will something as small as filling out a paper change the course of history? You're not sure. But you need these books.
"Oh, you know what, that's alright. I'll just put them back. I might not be staying for too long, it's a little up in the air at the moment," you respond trying not to sound nervous.
"Oh, alright, if you're sure."
You assure her that you are as you head over to the shelves.
You can't leave without these books, but how are you going to get past the counter without her seeing you? You look around for a distraction and it isn't long before you find one. There's a kid's section with two children about the ago of three running around playing. Setting the books down on a shelf near the exit, you go back up to the check out desk.
"Hi, I'm so sorry, but I think I just saw a child get sick in the children's section. I saw him running around with a friend."
At this, she sighs.
"Sometimes I wonder if the parents watch their children at all while they're here. Thanks, dear," she says before leaving the desk and walking towards the far section of the library.
Perfect.
You're about to run out when you see complimentary bags on a table near the door. You snag one before shoving the books in the bag and exiting the way you came.
You huff as you get in the passenger seat of the car.
"That was a fast exit, what did you steal 'em?" Sonny laughs as he pulls out, turning out of the lot.
You laugh nervously.
"A kid got sick," you lie as you glance down in the bag.
Sonny makes a sound of disgust as he pulls a cigarette out of his breast pocket before lighting it.
"That's why I don't like libraries."
---
Good, you've got the books, now you just need to do one more thing before you can relax.
Get into Elvis' room. That might not be too difficult seeing as he's still rehearsing for the upcoming film. After dinner, while everyone heads downstairs, you say that you are going to read for a while in the living room.
As soon as you hear them moving around downstairs, you spring into action. Climbing the stairs two at a time, you hurry until you come to a halt at his door, firmly closed.
You take a deep breath, then a second one. You listen for a moment to make sure no one is upstairs. There is complete silence. Your hand shakes as you bring it to the door knob. You need to be quick about this. You turn it and it opens with ease.
Looking inside, you are awestruck. It's a spitting image of the pictures you've seen. You can't believe you're actually in here. A room that not even president's can enter in your own time. It feels magical. You can smell the scent of Elvis all around you. It's intoxicating. You feel invasive, like you shouldn't be in here. But you need to make sure.
First walking to the closet, you open it gently as to not make any noise. You crouch down and look to see if there are any hiding spots. You see a box.
Opening it hastily, it takes you a moment to realize what exactly you're looking it, then it dawns on you.
Pictures of his mom. other small trinket items that you assume belong to his mother.
You gently shut the box and put it back where it belongs. Okay, time to look somewhere else. You check briefly to make sure there are no more hiding places in the closet before getting off the floor and closing the door. Looking around, you spot Elvis' dresser. Quietly walking over to it, You decide to start at the top as you open the first one. When you open the top drawer, you see a polaroid camera. Hm. Then you see handcuffs? Polaroids? For the second time, it takes you a moment to realize what exactly you're looking at.
"Oh,"You gasp as you see what, or rather who, is on the polaroids, quickly shutting the drawer.
Multiple different women, and one or two of him. Nude. Your face flushes all the way to your ears in embarrassment. You've heard stories of him liking that kind of thing, but you never thought you'd actually see it. All the sudden, you hear something.
"One second man, I gotta piss," Elvis calls down to someone as he climbs the steps to his room.
Oh no.
Your heart leaps in your chest as your eyes go wide. Oh God, what are you going to do? You look around and see his closet. It's your only option right now. You run over and gently open it before closing it on yourself, blanketed in complete darkness. You close the closet just in time as you hear the door to his bedroom open.
You hear him sigh as he shuts the door behind him. All the sudden, he stops walking. You can't breathe. What if he opens the closet door to grab something?
"What in the hell?" he mutters, and you can hear him walk away from you and go to his dresser drawer.
That's when you remember. You didn't shut it.
Fuck, fuck, fuck.
You hear him open the drawer more, and look around in it. You wish you could tell what he was thinking. He is silent for a long moment before you hear the drawer close again and he makes his way to the bathroom. He shuts the door. Thank God.
You hear him start using the toilet and think this is your best shot at leaving. Opening the closet as softly as you can, you slip out before shutting it just as slow. Tip-toeing across the floor as gently as you can manage, you finally reach the door and grab the knob. Then you hear him starting to wash his hands. Eyes widening, you open the door.
You sigh silently as you quietly shut the door behind you. You walk over to the staircase just in time for him to open the door, leaving his room.
"Oh, hey, I didn't know you were up here. Thought you were readin' in the living room," Elvis remarks as he walks in your direction.
"I was, but I needed to use the bathroom," you lie, pointing in the direction of the room you've been staying in.
"Oh, yeah, me too," Elvis chuckles, but the humor doesn't fully reach his eyes.
Whether that's because he's suspicious of you or not, you don't know. What you do know is, that was too close of a call.
Way too close.

(I wrote this on the train coming home on August 26th although I am just getting around to posting it now because time is a weird soup.)
So okay.
****
I haven’t written a personal journal post in a long time but I want to write down EVERYTHING I can remember about my adventure to NYC to see the Critical Role cast so I don’t forget. It was SUCH a moving experience and I’m so glad I went even though I was scared.
So okay my big goal for this year was to finish the first chapter of my C3 prequel fan comic A Long Road Home (southerngothiccomic.com), have a print edition made, and meet Laura and Marisha at a convention so I could give copies of it to them in person. When the CR cast announced they were going to be at Anime NYC this year I figured that was the closest they were probably going to get to me in Virginia. (And getting autographs at NYCC is reportedly like hunting a unicorn so I figured this would be my best chance.)
I was also terrified, and almost talked myself out of it because I was nervous about giving them the comic, even though I already had a badge and it was what I really, really wanted to do. I know the cast loves to see fanart — and also, it has been revealed, reads the fanfic — but it’s also a pretty well-known taboo for a fan to show their fanfic to a creator and a graphic novel is an unholy hybrid of the two. I was also worried that it would seem presumptuous of me to present them with a fanmade prequel graphic novel because there’s almost certainly going to be an official one at some point, and afraid that at best they might politely tell me they couldn’t accept it (for the reasons that comic writers aren’t “allowed” to read fanfic), and at worst they might be kind of annoyed that it exists. Either way I’d be REALLY sad, and in the weeks leading up to the con I worked myself up into an irrational panic about this. Fortunately my friends managed to talk me into not backing out (and spoilers: it turned out okay in the end!) but I was still very scared.
Also I was so focused on the comic stuff that I forgot until after GenCon earlier this month to think of what I wanted to actually have autographed. I decided to get a big print of the chapter one cover from INPRNT, assuming that since I ordered it two weeks in advance with an eta of 5-7 days that would be plenty of time for it to get to me. Well, reader, it was not. (But please do not let me dissuade you from using INPRNT! To their credit when I contacted them and asked if I could upgrade to rush delivery, they expedited it for free. Unfortunately even with rush shipping it just missed me, arriving at my house while I was on the train to NYC.)
Pâté on the train going to see his biological parents. (Laura and Marisha.)
When I saw that it wasn’t going to arrive in time I was starting to panic because there is nowhere near me to have art prints made. It’s a 15 minute drive (past the alpaca farm) just to get to the nearest grocery store. Grasping at straws I was kind of like Should I . . . draw something? On paper?? With real media that I haven’t used in like 10 years??? I only have 3 days!!!
Fortunately my life was saved by @emphaticembroiderer who had the brilliant suggestion of sending my art ahead to a print shop in NYC and picking it up before the convention. There are indeed MANY of those in New York and I managed to find one that was open on Saturdays and able to make my print on short notice. (567 Framing on W 14th street. The owner, Jack Hu, did excellent work and was very kind!) By that point I was frazzled and didn’t want two of the same print so I decided to be self-indulgent and had this one made. Not my showiest piece but it is one of my favorite things I’ve drawn. (This turned out to be the correct decision.) It’s a 6 1/2 hour train ride from here to there (and it got a little delayed along the way) so by the time I got there it was after 5 and the print shop closed at 6:30 so I zoomed over there straight from the train station to pick it up. It turned out BEAUTIFULLY, and the owner was pleased with how happy I was with it and that he’d been able to help.
He enjoys that he is included.
Then I went and checked in to my hotel and that point really just wanted to lie down on a bed but I had plans to take Pâté to see Hadestown on Broadway that night because I wanted to make the most of my trip. (Also it’s important for our scrungly son to receive a cultural education.) In keeping with the theme of the weekend I wore the Laudna-themed sundress I made for GenCon with one of the poppies in my hair. An usher told me they liked my ensemble. :) I had decided to go for a front row mezzanine seat because I didn’t know when I’d ever have this opportunity again and I didn’t want to risk my miniature self being stuck behind a tall person. It was perfect; I could see everything and the performance was AMAZING. Pâté had a very good time too.
The next day was the CR panel and autographs!! I decided to wear my 1950s Laudna cosplay from GenCon. I had some doubts about it when I got there because without the rest of 50s Bells Hells the theme isn’t as clear and outside of a DnD-focused convention the recognizability of a CR character is kind of low, let alone an AU variant on one. But once I found the Critters my Pâté poodle skirt was appreciated. :)
This is Rach @dadrielle, Astoria @astoriacolumnstaircase, Abby @overnighttosunflowers, and me as 50s Hells at GenCon!
And okay I know this said a lot but it’s true, CR fans are the NICEST fandom to be a part of. <3 If you’re ever standing in line for a CR thing by the time you get there you will have new friends. (For comparison the other-fandoms cosplayers I saw at the hotel and on the way to the con didn’t even return my smiles, even though we were all clearly going to the same place.) I fell in with a group of people who were near me in line (including an amazing Owlbearman cosplayer) and we decided to all sit together. The panel was really great. I don’t remember everything that was asked because of everything ELSE that happened later that day but they hinted that Big Things are coming (including multiple live shows!! Please come to Richmond! Or DC! Or at least somewhere on the East Coast!) for the 10th anniversary and Momlan stepped up to the mic during the Q&A segment and revealed that Sam has achieved his childhood dream . . . to become a minotaur. :D
With the mindset of making the most of this trip I had intended to try to get a spot in line to ask a question but I was hesitant about being on camera (even in cosplay) and while I was dithering about it like 50 people got in line. (I was also Suffering by that point because my rockabilly Laudna shoes have like 3 inch heels and after walking from the hotel to the convention center I didn’t have the fortitude to dart over to the line in them.)
My question, which I hope to submit next time there’s a Q&A opportunity, was this: For Marisha. We’ve seen Delilah’s influence manifesting in Laudna’s fashion choices recently. Now that she has the means and the freedom to do so, what kind of clothes would she choose for herself?
(Because I am a little sad that — until a possible post-campaign oneshot — we’ll never get to see a high-level Laudna costume that’s totally of her own design and I’m really eager to know what it would look like! Let her be spooky and free!)
Afterwards the cosplayers were being rounded up for a photo shoot but I was anxious to get a good spot in line for my autograph with Laura at 2pm so I stealthed away with Ken (@elissabrat), a Jester fan I had met in line, who knew where they were and had one with Travis at the same time. When we got there we were told No, go away and come back in an hour and a half, because it was still only 12. So we went to the Artists Alley where we found a girl named Lea whom we had also met in the panel line and collected a few other stray Critters (Ken has a boisterous and inviting personality and importantly, is very tall, preventing the rest of us from getting lost in the crowd) and we wandered around seeking out all the CR fan artists we could find. (There were a lot! It was great. I got some prints.)
by Cait May and Maliveth
Around 1 we decided to go back and see what the line situation was. Before we parted ways I exchanged twitter handles with Lea, who looked at my profile and said “Wait . . . this is you?”
She told me she was a big fan of my comic and looks forward to it every week! and we were both kind of like !!! at each other for a moment. I had never met someone who recognized my art in the wild before. (On ANY other day this would have been the most amazing thing that happened to me, haha.) I was so touched to meet her. <3
I took out the two books I was carrying and explained why I was there and we all got hyped up about it. And it made it feel a little less daunting, to know that there was someone there who understood the quest I was on and how close I was to the end of it.
I was like 5th in line for Laura and since it was still early I got to participate in that bonding experience integral to every con, sitting on the floor in cosplay, with a very good Vex behind me. (Hilariously, even after the dig at them — or maybe unaware of it — in the most recent episode, there were a lot of Funko Pop resellers around us, haha.)
I sent word to Southern Gothic Discord to remember me fondly in case I died here. In fact I'm not entirely sure that I didn't.
It felt like there was a disproportionate amount of fanfare revealing my print because I kept it how it was packed by the printer, wrapped in paper in between two pieces of cardboard so it wouldn’t get bent, so there was this whole ceremony of peeling back the tape, turning under one of the cardboard protectors, unfolding the paper, and turning over the print. But Laura loved it. She made like a happy sob when she saw it (it was really cute) and she looked at it for a long time taking in all the details and said it was beautiful. <3 <3 <3 (No matter how much we love and ship Imogen and Laudna, NO ONE loves them or is shipping them harder than Laura Bailey. She asked if I was going to bring it to Marisha too and was careful picking out a spot so there'd be room for both of their signatures. :))
I told her I was really happy to meet her because I’ve been a fan since BloodRayne (so, um. 20 years) and she said “oh wow, that was OG days!” And she gave me just a really kind look like she understood how much it meant to me to be there.
Then I gave her the comic. You all were right, I was worried about nothing! because she is the sweetest and she loved it. I very nervously pushed it across the table and said it was a comic I had made and wanted to give her. She picked it up and started turning the pages and was surprised when she saw what it was. “Wait, this is a whole novel! You made this?”
I confessed that I had, and she asked how long it had taken, I told her about a year (it was actually longer; in the moment I kind of forgot not how many pages there are in the first chapter but how many weeks are in a year) and she looked just really impressed that I had made it and touched by how much work had gone into it. She said she couldn’t wait to read it and seemed really excited to hear that it’s still going online! (So no pressure on me there if she's keeping up with it now, haha. o.o) And she kept looking between the book and me like she couldn’t believe it.
Then she asked me if I would sign it for her. :')
Somehow I survived long enough to do so! (a little wobbly because my hands were shaking) and someone (I think it was the ticket scanner) made a joke about how I was the first person to give an autograph at a signing, haha. And then she came around the table and gave me a hug. <3 <3 <3
After that my soul was still on the ethereal plane but the rest of me managed to find my way (after a brief wrong turn) to Marisha’s line. (There was a really good Keyleth and Caduceus in line behind me and they kindly noticed and returned the Pâté sticker that fell out of Marisha’s book).
She recognized my cosplay as 1950s Laudna right away! which was very validating after my earlier indecision haha. She loved the Pâté skirt and thought the scissors embroidery on my collar was adorable. She really liked the art too and was kind of like “Awww” about the book like in an “aww it’s an Imogen and Laudna thing” kind of way (she also liked the glass bottle windchimes on the cover and I love that she noticed that detail because Laudna’s penchant for turning things other people have thrown away into arts and crafts is one of my favorite aspects of her character) until she opened it and started looking through it.
Then she said, “Wait, this is actually really good," and she asked me seriously if Liam “Art Dad” knew about it (I said he had liked some of my other art on Twitter but I didn’t know if he knew about the comic) and then she said — still looking at it, more to herself than me — “We’ll have to add it to our art catalogue.” I don’t know exactly what that means (and I don’t want to get my hopes up too high by speculating; I was too !!! in the moment to ask and now I’m going to be wondering) but . . . it sounds . . . exciting??
They also both enjoyed Pâté and his lil sunglasses. :)
I had gone up with the intention of asking my other burning question: How does being cold-blooded affect Laudna in cold climates? If she gets too cold will she enter a state of brumation like a lizard? Will she freeze solid?
But I forgot. And it really wouldn’t have been the right moment. Maybe when I come back with Volume Two. :)
You’re supposed to pay extra to get a quote put on there but they both did it anyway without even asking. I think they must be really pleased when someone brings them something personal that they’ve made to have signed and not something they’re planning to sell.
After that I just kind of floated away from the con even though it was only like 2:30 haha. Nothing else could have happened there that would have equaled or improved upon that experience. Although I did adopt a Tentacle Kitty. The vendor (correctly) guessed “you look like you’d vibe with our spooky collection” so I had to get a new buddy for Pâté. (50s Laudna, still readily identifiable as a witch wherever she goes.) Also I saw a very chill emotional support pomeranian in a backpack.
(On the way back I saw the mark of the Traveler graffiti’d in green on the sidewalk. Truly a blessed day. :P)
Afterwards I just sat on the bed in my hotel room amid the floof of my crinoline wondering what even is my life for the next few hours and being like !!!! at Discord. Then I met up with Abby (whom it was wonderful to see again!! thank you so much for coming to see me) for dinner and had a really lovely time going over the What Just Happened of it all and talking about Imodna over strawberry pancakes. As one does. Perfect ending to an amazing day. <3
It was SUCH an incredible, exhilarating experience, thank you everyone who pushed me into not giving up out of fear. Laura and Marisha are SO nice and gracious in person and it was just so rewarding, after all the work and love and time I’ve put into this comic, to be able to finally bring it to the people who inspired it! And to see it appreciated and admired by them! It was more than I ever could have imagined.
This fandom is the best. My heart is so happy and full of love right now. <3 <3 <3

Damn, Vordo (And I assume Ethedok) have been trapped in Predathos' stomach being slowly digested for millennia or even eons? And Bells Hells wanted to risk condemning the rest of the Gods to this fate? Cuz reasons? What the fuck guys?!
(Not to mention this does count as attempted Genocide, the Gods are a species, they (were) ?Born? ?Created? ?Always Existed? ?Sprung into being? like this, so it is a bit discriminatory to be like; No! Bad! Kill them all! Just putting that out there...)
Yes, they are more powerful than mortals. Someone is always going to be more powerful than you, it's unfair, that's life. With all the Gods gone, someone will still be more powerful than you. OR you'll be more powerful than them. Something WILL fill the power vacuum and to pretend it won't is foolish. (Everything will be sunshine and roses comparatively until the eldritch abominations from the astral plane or wherever find Exandria and decide to make a new home with all the tasty snacks on it now that BH has (potentially) driven away the planet's most powerful defenders). And let's be real, the power structure set up Exandria has (had?) going with the Divine Gate and divine and arcane magic is about as good as it's ever going to get with a species and power difference that vast imho.
This hatred of the Gods I've seen both in the campaign and from some fans is the exact same sort of hatred Lex Luther has for Superman if we're being real. He hates Superman because he's stronger and faster and could do whatever he wanted whenever he wanted and almost no one could stop him. And I get that feeling, it's understandable. No one likes feeling small or powerless. But Superman doesn't WANT to do any of that, and it's not his fault he has superpowers.
The light of our yellow sun grants Superman's powers, like the collision with Reality granted the God's domains of power to them. And the only times there is terrible damage and trauma and strife is when Luthor picks a fight and then there are city blocks leveled. Meanwhile Superman is like, hey, would you please chill, I really don't want to be a dictator or anything I swear, I just want to rescue kittens from trees and stop bank robbers and prevent the occasional alien invasion. The only difference as far as I can tell, is that Superman is the main character of his story, and The Exandrian Pantheon aren't the main characters of this one.
And before anyone says anything, Yes, the Calamity was the Gods fighting each other, but I just want to remind everyone once again, that mortals are the ones that kicked that event off in style. The Betrayer Gods were in jail, they were dealt with. Vespin Chloras and The Ring of Brass majorly fucked the world over. (The Ring of Brass also helped save the world, but they helped almost destroy it first so it kind of evens out a bit I guess lol. Is that how that math works? That doesn't feel right.)
As for everyone chanting that the Primes should have just killed the Betrayers... for starters, are you also this pro death penalty in real life? I highly doubt it just based on CR's core demographics lmfao. And second, they already explained that there were some threats in the universe that required the combined might of all of them to face. And I am NOT convinced that they only meant Predathos. That is one hell of a gamble to assume that! (Not to mention they're family and the sole survivors of a terrible cataclysm and refugees in a strange land and they love/hate each other).
Long spiel short, yikes! BH might be the bad guys. Uh Oh!
(I know they were talking about controlling it, but like, how? And to do what? Chase the Gods away? And for how long? Forever? Seems like a somewhat ill-conceived plan lol).

On opposite ends of the anti-Romy spectrum but as a Gambit fan I too am routing for Rogneto for y’all. Gambit & Rogue do not match and for all actual fans of the comics etc we need that cr*p over with asap. I think it’s silly that people babygirl Rogue when it comes to Erik, she’s a grown ass woman not a child & as a Gambit fan I can’t stand the way his history has been forgotten for Romy that was never actually meant to be a thing. {They were killing him off which is a crime for me but the way he’s written these days might not be such a bad thing} Gambit has a wife already and Rogue was more interesting when they weren’t involved.
SavageLands for the win - hope it catches on this time around and becomes the IT ship xo
Hi anon. Thank you so much for your wonderful message. It means a lot. And yes, I agree, X-Men fandom treats Rogue like some fragile little baby when it comes to Magneto. (But Storm, who is not that much older than Rogue, is ok to ship him with. Nothing against Erik/Ororo shippers. They did nothing wrong. My issue is with the certain type of R*my shippers who choose to be harassing hypocrites instead of being civil and accepting that everyone has different tastes.)
As for Gambit and Gambit shipping, I'll admit he isn't my top five favorite character but I do enjoy his stuff away from Rogue, like his team-up with X-Factor and the Wolverine and the X-Men cartoon. I think Gambit in the recent comics has been reduced to cat-owner and Rogue's himbo husband; I much prefer when he had his sneaky smarts and when he's allowed to explore other relationships outside of Rogue and vice versa for her. Also, like you kinda reminded me, Gambit has had other badass love interests besides Rogue: Bella Donna, Frenzy, Lila Cheney, Storm, Dr. Reyes, etc. Like how Rogue fans deserve to ship other ships besides R*my, I think Gambit fans deserve to be able to ship Gambit with other people besides Rogue without receiving fan harassment.
As for Rogueneto and the new Savage Land comic, I'm not expecting the ship to surpass R*my in popularity, but popularity is not why I ship a ship; I just choose to ship what is personally the most interesting to me. But I am glad that Tim Seeley's series is gaining popularity, especially after the ridiculous harassment he received on social media for writing material for a so-called "Predator" ship. I also think it's cool that the new comic and the '97 cartoon has created new Rogueneto shippers and made older ones braver. I also think with the advancement in social media, more people in the general X-Men fandom are realizing the hypocrisy of some of the less kind R*my shippers. And that's awesome on its own because it means other Gambit and Rogue fans don't have to feel the pressure to ship R*my in order to be a "real" fans of the characters, future comic and television writers included.

For a prompt... CWN and WWX meeting up and discussing their inventions, exchanging ideas and totally looking like theyre two kids on an arts and crafts table sharing crayons and yapping about their stuff... maybe even working on an entirely new project together. Any AU!
(I really think they'd get along well, like a house on fire thanks to their interests!)
OR
GuangShi (link click) finally FINALLY talking about feelings and defining their relationship and sharing a first kiss and cuddle in the same bunk (post nightmare?). Ignoring the s2e12 episode reveals ofc!
OR
Post-marriage WWX in CR teaching talisman classes and having an insane fan following. Everywhere he goes, some Lan juniors will be there, anything he needs, a junior will help, storytime? Dammit all the Lans aged 10 and up are around and happy to listen and ask questions. LQR hears the flute sound and absolutely despises it because now that chenqing is no longer summoning corpses, its summoning Lan disciples because WWX needs help with something legitimate or some dumb idea. LWJ loves it, its very LSZ in a rabbit field vibes for him, seeing his husband surrounded by all the Lans and getting the love and admiration he deserves. LJY and LSZ are the gang-leaders of this WWX protection squad and delegate responsibilities!
Wait, what’s that second prompt? Is that something I’ve read and am blanking on?
