An alternative idea for Hinata and Neji and the Hyuuga:
Hinata has never felt brave in her life. She has never felt brave or strong or revolutionary. She is only Hinata, Main Branch by inches and chance. (If Hizashi had beaten Hiashi that day... and when Hanabi is old enough to challenge Hinata– defeat is on her tongue. defeat is hanging above her head, senbon and kunai swinging.) She is only Hinata, and her clan's wrongdoings are too big for her. They will swallow her whole.
Except, there is Kiba, Shino, and Kurenai-sensei. Except, there is Uzumaki Naruto and the hope he inspires. Except, there is Haruno Sakura, spitting on fate. Except there are the Nine, and Konoha is cruel and just this once it brings nine together instead of driving them apart.
And there is Neji, missing out on freedom by chance and inches. With victory in his stance and defeat in his blood. The truth: Hizashi lost that day. The truth: Neji is powerful. The truth: Neji is genetically both Hiashi's nephew and son, and Hiashi's own children pale in comparison to his (fettered) skill. The truth: Neji exists in a grey space, too close to the Main House to be truly Branch House to its other members. The truth: if Hiashi could find it in him to bend, Neji would be the heir and Hinata the Branch House member and everyone knows it.
Neji nearly beats Hinata to death in the chuunin exams. Hinata doesn't feel brave or strong then. She doesn't even feel afraid, afraid of what her failure will mean or of the death hanging above her head. She's just Hinata, tired. But here is the problem: Hinata, tired, is a different girl compared to Hinata, awake. And she's tired of everything very suddenly– all of it! Everything the Hyuuga were and are and will be! She tired of her father and her sister and even especially Neji, who is hurting her as if it will change anything while preaching that fate is unshakable.
A seemingly unrelated piece of information: Hinata is teammates with Inuzuka Kiba and Akamaru both. She spends as much time as possible with her teammates instead of her family. The Inuzuka haven't put away the futon Hinata borrows during sleep-overs for months. So: Hinata sleeps in the den of dogs.
So: Hinata, tired, bites.
Hinata has to be taken to the hospital in the end, half her body broken and her ribs puncturing her lungs. But Neji goes to the hospital too. He has large gash in the side of his head, his shoulder looks mauled and part of his left ear is missing. Neji cut her hair with deliberately aimed kunai in the beginning of their match, to humiliate and shame her. When Hinata is dragged to the hospital, there are long strands of hair on the ground along with hers. Neji cut Hinata's hair with deliberate action and precise aim. Hinata bit her cousin to the bone and ripped his hair out.
In another world, a month later Uzumaki Naruto would bring down Neji's view of unshakable fate. In this one, Neji considers the facts: He was always going to win, he who was strong and Hinata who was not. But another fact: Neji is in the hospital with bite marks that the doctors in the hospital won't use medical ninjutsu on in fear of exacerbating the bacteria found in human saliva. They will take months to heal fully and leave thick, raised scar tissue in their wake. The fact: Hinata was always going to lose. The truth: if he was just a moment slower, if she had bitten two inches to the left and one up– Neji would have lost. He would have died, bled out from a punctured throat, just like she would have died if she had been an inch to the right, from the strike he had prepared to snap her spine.
Neji considers fate in his hospital room. Hinata considers stagnation in hers.
The fate of the Hyuuga clan shifts by inches and chance.
#hinata finds her teeth au#a butterfly flaps its wings and a clan falls.#this is not to say that neji is wrong or evil or anything#but he's thirteen and was born into slavery. his rage SURE AS HELL is justified it's just that hinata isn't the right target. It's Hiashi.#it's Hiashi's father and his parents and their parents and all those that held up the system and the Caged Bird Seal#it's the system itself. it's konoha that allowed this to happen under their watch. it's the third hokage and the second and the first who#let the Hyuuga join their village and gave them power#but you have to realize that Neji saw a chance to KILL his cousin and he took it. and in canon the thing that stopped him wasn't#any members of the Hyuuga Main House (who were presumably watching and able to stop this at time due to the Caged Bird Seal) which is.#DEEPLY suspicious. Which leads me to think that if Neji had killed Hinata he would have gotten a slap on the wrist for it.#because what does Hinata matter? She isn't the heir they want#god i HATE naruto politics#my posts

Be. Honest..
....
Hinata: Hey Neji?
Neji(Sips his tea as he was sitting onto the couch as he felt his cousin's voice shaking.): Yeah?
Hinata(Looks at the mirror, frightened, as she ran her fingers through the locks of hair that were left out from her loosly bun.): Do you think I've gotten fat?
Neji( Looks up at his cousin from onto down,intrigued, and shook his head.) Nope. You're okay. Not much for the large grey sweater and baggy blue home pants here.
Hinata(Turns back at him, still uncertain.): You think? Think that I don't look huge?
Neji(Shrugs his shoulders, unimpressed.): Never noticied that..
Hinata(Looked like she was about her shit, here.): But I'm telling you I look like a mess, here!
Neji(Rose an eyebrow, confused for a sec.): Had any insecurities, lately? Like she always had back then, only the stutter faded away with the pregnancy..And the craziness had started after Boruto was born...Not to forget the hormones!
Hinata(Sats down with him onto the couch, way too loud. and panicked.): --All the time, ni-san! Ever since my body started to change! As if you know what else had changed!
He furrowed his eyebrows together as he looked away for a second, in wonder, until it finally clicked in when he looked back down with a frown at the corner of his features.
Hinata(Close to tears with frustration.): And with Boruto being born, I've gotten bigger!(She covers up her eyes with her palms, when he only wished to fly away from this dramatic event.)
Depends of what she meant by that..Neji thought that back as he wrinkled his nose as some bad smell had just came in. Be nice, be nice, or else she'll kill you!
Hinata(Drags back her panicked face up at him.): Neji! Say something!
Be nice, Neji..
Neji: Sorry to tell you, but I didn't noticed that. I was too busy onto hating you, back then!
Hinata(Looked too shocked as he gulped up at those words, nervously when she stood up onto her full height, about to look bad here.): Neji---
Neji(Defended himself with the best way he could do.): What? You wanted me to be honest, there you've got it!!
Way to go, stupid genius..!

i'll be honest, i doubt sakura was ever written with any sort of abnormally problematic home life in mind. mainly bc sakura was barely written with much of anything in mind outside of "there's a girl there. just in case people start thinking it's getting a bit faggy. if there's a love triangle with a girl then everything is automatically straight forever. also walking first aid kit! hooray less time in the hospital for the characters that matter"
having said that, by our standards, every parent completely fine with their kid training as a child soldier should be considered abusive, whether their intentions are good or not.
i'm tired and need to go to bed so this isn't going to be too well put-together, but i find it somewhat frustrating that people will bend over backwards to explain the hell out of any single detail for a character... so long as they fit a certain criteria (so not most of the girls, not most of the unattractive men, not a good chunk of the kumo nin... idk what it could be. sure sakura, danzou, and killer bee are all major characters who the story simply could not exist without, but i guess spending extra time analyzing them is just unappealing. for some incredibly bizarre eternally unknowable reason. guess it'll be a mystery forever what a shame)
but concerning sakura, a lot of people bring up how she's extremely callous towards naruto and sasuke's parental situations - which is true! but like, no one wants to think about that even a little bit? really? i'm autistic and bad at social cues, and i was worse at 12, and even then i knew it's kinda shitty to talk smack about an orphan for having no parents to another orphan. but sakura doesn't. that seemingly obvious no-no doesn't register with her. and if we're counting the movies (i usually don't but rtn was at least kinda funny at times so. eh) then she does something similar as a teenager when she complains about how annoying her parents are to a currently-sad-about-his-dead-parents naruto.
and it's strange bc sakura is generally portrayed as a fairly intelligent, observant character. but of the three members of the og team seven, she seems to have the least amount of emotional intelligence (she stops being emotionally deadlast once sai joins the team bc. well it's hard to beat good ol' danzou trauma) but it's baffling to me how neither the series nor a good chunk of the fanbase are remotely interested in that there's something clearly Not Quite Normal about her (aside from the sasuke fixation)
sakura, from the get-go, is the team's liar. sasuke's ability to give a shit about what other people think of him died with his family, and naruto was raised by discarded bowls of ramen, so it makes sense that of the three of them sakura is the best at hiding herself. but her awareness of that seems to fluctuate over the course of the series (it was much more prominent back before inner sakura got eaten by a space whale offscreen or whatever it was that happened to her). sakura routinely tries to shove herself into a mold that she very obviously (to the audience) doesn't fit, and we're never really shown why. she's desperate to escape ino's shadow initially, which makes sense, but even after becoming her rival sakura's sense of self is still very clearly,,,, Off. she can't decide who she is - or, rather, she can't decide how she wants the world to see her, nor fully restrain herself from pulling away from whichever role she's trying to push herself into.
the chuunin exams established that sakura's character arc was meant to be "blossoming" into herself, something that was never allowed to happen bc unfortunately the manga she's in is naruto. imo, her decision to go after and kill sasuke should have been the tipping point for her character - whether she got there early enough to hear danzou confirm what "madara" had said about itachi's true motives, or she healed karin on the spot and kakashi didn't get the chance to send her away from the exposition scene. or something else.
but regardless of what specifically it was, that should have been the moment where sakura (and sai, if he got away from the gas; i think he should have tbh) was faced with the truth about the uchiha massacre - and that naruto, kakashi, and yamato had all agreed to keep it quiet. i think seeing sasuke's grief and rage (and yes, borderline insanity at that point - trying to kill off both of the only two people you know who can heal you when you're seriously injured is not a wise decision, but in his defense it had been quite a Day) and knowing that not only was she supporting the system that caused it, but that people she was personally attached to were either involved in the carrying out or the covering up of what happened.
iirc tsunade was still in a coma at that point, so sakura wouldn't've have been able to go to her and demand to know whether she'd known the truth or not - she'd have to figure it out on her own. whether sakura would have deserted konoha for good or not is hard to say, but i think if she realized kakashi was trying to keep her in the dark about the massacre, she would have at least decided to heal sasuke (and karin) and hear their side of things.
hell, even with what happened in canon, sakura was the one who brought karin back to konoha, right? she could have just. stopped, healed her enough to get some answers, and then figured things out from there. plus seeing two smart, manipulative little assholes with a thing for the same uninterested guy engage in psychological warfare could have been awesome. but nooooo can't let sakura know things she might remember when she had a role in the story outside of boo-boo fixer......
Hm so as I’ve seen many people lump Sakura in with Naruto and Kakashi as ‘bootlickers who ignore all the state’s atrocities in favor of keeping that status quo’, so as both a radical and a Sakura fan I’d like to share why and how I think Sakura could be turned into a radical character.
This isn’t gonna go very deeply into her fighting abilities or any of that, it’s more an analysis of her personality and narrative role than anything.
Keep reading
#naruto#naruto shippuden#meta#long post#haruno sakura#i don't even really disagree with a lot of the criticism aimed at her i just think people go out of their way to be awful to her especially#''oh she's so useless she's so annoying the author hates her'' ok well all of that is kishimoto's fault not sakura's#bc y'know. she's not real. and has no say over her role in the story#at least sakura gets to have a few lines now and then concerning the fucked up shit she goes through... even if it's mostly about the boys#unlike poor hinata#hyuuga ''i was kidnapped as a 3yo for my dna but this is actually my cousin's sad backstory and i never get to have an opinion on it''#actually i'm not even sure we ever get confirmation that she knows it happened... she was unconscious when it was brought up#.......guys does hinata know she was kidnapped as a kid. genuine question did anybody ever bother to tell her#oh wait it doesn't matter she's just there to pine for naruto until he notices her#my poor girls deserve better. they could have at least gotten to kiss each other

The Hyuuga branch system is a little different, here all clan members must compete for the few spots available on the main branch. Most of them only get branded with the seal well into their 20s. That means decades of continuous tough competition, to be the best of the best. Aurora is one of the current main branch house members, few things are "better" than that position, such as a higher hierarchy clan - Uzumaki.
As soon as Nolan was born he was taken to the Uzumaki compound as part of the clan, Aurora's plan had worked even if it meant she had to be away from her son. However only 5 years later, Junko was born, and 5 more later she was elected the heiress of the Uzumaki clan - putting Nolan's Hyuuga lineage against her Uchiha meant she has the higher rank - and so Nolan was sent back "down" to the Hyuuga clan, to compete again for his spot.
Details
-> Unlike Tooru, Lio does live in the Uzumaki compound. He's met Junko and, although limited, still has contact with Nolan and Aurora.
-> Nolan does not have any resentment towards Junko, he sees her as a precious younger cousin.
-> Other reasons for a Hyuuga to get a brand seal earlier is to be assigned a particular job - that is Honoka's case as she is Junko's bodyguard. Her seal is a slightly different one and can be activated by Junko as well (but she still has to be taught how to).

I had a stupid/funny/dramatic thought about the Team Uzamaki AU.
If you DO go Shikanaru, I think it’d be hella funny for him to even try to rebuild that bridge. After all, he has to get by Naruto’s kits.
The dramatic part? He tells them that he wants to apologize. Properly, and promises to do right by Naruto. He even wants them there, so they know he’s sincere.
The funny part? He’s held essentially at gun point while doing this. Like, there’s a fuckin Moose holding him against a tree, he’s 99% certain the Hyuuga is the one menacingly tapping fingernails near his ear, and the less said about Naruto’s darling Hiro-chan, the easier he’ll sleep at night, kinda gun point.
The stupid part? This dumb asshole gives them a specially designed kunai to murk him On Sight if he ever hurts Naruto. He gives it to his cousin. After all, she’s already hunting him for sport, she won’t use it?
Right?

until the end|shisaku
✦ rating: t
✦ summary: They'll never be in the cold again. —Sakura/Shisui
✧ read one on ao3
Uchiha Kagami was to not live past the age of twenty-five.
Senju Hashirama lifted one healing hand towards him and the heavens wept.
Shisui's grandfather had always praised the Senju brothers much to the eclectic dismay of the Uchiha clan. He owed the Senju clan his life and ensured the Uchiha elders knew this. Kagami went out of his way to pay respects to the Senju founders and trained with their granddaughter, Tsunade, as she grew up.
Shisui's favorite bedtime stories were from his grandfather. He could never quite clearly explain how Hashirama had healed him with one swipe of his hand and the other hand behind his head nor could he even begin to explain how omnipotent the Shodaime's prowess was—he couldn't believe it, couldn't fathom it.
Then the Fourth Hokage died and Shisui knew exactly what his grandfather meant.
Legends were never meant to blossom nor were they meant to live forever.
.
Itachi tosses a clean dango stick into the trash near Shisui and arches a fine eyebrow, "So?"
"So..." Shisui trails off in turn, after dropping said folder onto his office desk and leaning on the wall next to his door. The Konoha Police Department was not a hovel like many snooty non-Uchiha clan members believed it to be—see equally snooty Hyuuga clansmen here.
The windows are as long and wide as the walls, capturing the sunbeams and pockets of heat. The elder Uchiha's office is made from solid oak and the traditional smooth surfaces. With cabinets and overhead storage— fit for maximum use. His grandfather gave him a lumpy green sofa that he could never seem to get rid of, which is what he stretched out flat on when thinking over a particularly hard case—like this one.
He prods Itachi, “What do you think?"
"What do you think?"
Shisui wags his finger with a faux patronizing click of the tongue, “I asked first."
Itachi blinks slowly, menacingly, and replies pointedly, "I brought you the case."
Shisui sighs already exasperated with his cousin.

I was thinking about how the girls in Naruto might have progressed as ninja if they'd ever been given actual development.
Ino would make an excellent spy. She's mental ninjutsu oriented, and she's people oriented. She's the gossip queen, she knows everything about anyone. I can so easily see her as an espionage master going under deep cover to do what she does best, knowing other people's business. Super glam spy fits her vibes, she deserves it. The anime suggests an alternate path as she has a filler arc where she apprentices under Tsunade and that's as a mental health specialist. This doesn't fit her quite as well but I do like the idea of her and Sakura working together given how important their rivalry is to each other in the manga.
Sakura was introduced as having excellent potential in genjustsu, and then nothing was done with this. Sasuke became the genjutsu user and Sakura the taijutsu user and this could have been interesting since this is the opposite of their initial introduction but again nothing was done with this. Building off her taijutsu and being able to focus her chakra to a point for super powered attacks, I think Sakura deserves to wield a giant axe, she has one in several of Kishimoto's illustrations. Next would be her to develop her genjutsu potential, Sakura's strength's are her control and intelligence and I'd like to see her fully use those skills. Additionally the manga and characters themselves draw strong parallels between Sasuke and Kakashi as the geniuses of their teams. The parallel that is missed is that Sakura and Kakashi are both people without plot-breakingly powerful kekkai genkai with high intelligence, excellent chakra control, but mediocre chakra pools, and this really could have been explored more. One of the problems Naruto has is that healer is treated as a women's profession, with Sakura its rather hard to avoid however as the manga sets up a strong parallel between the sannin trio and Team 7. One option would be for Sakura not to use her medical knowledge for healing but instead like Kabuto for assassination and special operations. Of Team 7 Sakura is the most suited for ANBU, Naruto is just out of consideration completely and Sasuke has shown himself to be just as stupid and reckless as Naruto. Sakura in Anbu would also further drive the similarities between her and Kakashi.
When will someone remember that Tenten exists. I don't see her 700 epilogue retirement to run a weapon shop necessarily bad. Not everyone has to be a ninja, the problem is when it's always the women who retire from fighting. As a ninja though I think Tenten deserves more swords, like Killer B level or more swords. Tenten's strengths are in her physical abilities and weapon versatility, so she should be able to always pull out the weapon type that would work best against any opponent. I love to see her be a primarily physical fighter this would be my first pick for her, but another option would be to lean more into the sealing scroll side of thing so not just weapons but tools and traps, make Tenten a saboteur.
Hinata, oh Hinata, she deserves so much better. I can see more or less two paths for her. First would be to quit being a ninja, it could work for her. Hinata never really seemed to want to be a ninja, it was always for something else, her clan, Naruto, her friends, but not quite herself. I can very easily her leaving the shinobi life all together, leave ninjas, leave the Hyuuga clan; Hinata deserves it, to lead her own life on her own terms. Hinata had such potential to be an interesting character and its a shame the manga never got into it. She's the eldest of the Hyuuga clan leader but she's overshadowed by both her cousin and her younger sister and ends up passed over for succession, like that is juicy. True growth for the Hyuuga would have been Neji succeeding his uncle as clan head but that's another post. If she stays a ninja I would have like to see come to terms that her clan's kinda bullshit in a lot of ways and what they think of her doesn't matter, becoming a shinobi because she wants that for herself. In line with this personal growth she fighting style should deviate from Hyuuga techniques, maybe she develops her own taijutsu style. Or who knows maybe she becomes a physical therapist between the ability to see chakra and affect it, magic acupuncture. Kurenai is similarly ignored in the manga, but with her mentorship, Hinata has the potential to become essentially a magekiller, specializing in countering and taking down genjutsu users.
I bring up the option of some of the girls retiring because some of the boys should have retired. Hinata should have gotten Choji's character arc, and Choji who hates fighting should have been allowed to quit fighting and run a successful bakery cafe business. Sai deserves to put shinobi life behind him and become a full time artist. Shikamaru starts out like he's going to quit but I'm actually quite fond of his character arc. Yamato is also wasted potential as former human experiment and child soldier, like Sai he should learn how to live in peace, maybe he becomes an architect. We don't see team Taka in chapter 700 but Juugo is so gentle I want a nice civilian life for him.
(idk about Temari I mostly just want her to keep girlbossing and beating people up. Mmm I do think she's make a better Kazekage than Gaara. Gaara is another one I could see quiting being a soldier.)

"…So you claim Hinata had no consideration for life of anyone other than Naruto... and then use a screenshot from the manga of her literally showing consideration for the wellbeing of someone who isn't Naruto."
Considering how things went after Neji vs Naruto, chances are that things changed in the Hyuuga family for those other than just Neji. Even if not, Hinata risking her life =/= a lack of consideration for anyone's life other than Naruto's, despite consequences. Or are you saying you’ve never done anything without carefully considering every single possible consequence first?
But hey… "Tell me you didn’t read my ask properly without telling me you didn’t read my ask properly".
"Or are you saying you've never done anything without carefully considering every single possible consequence first?"
First of all, sure, everyone did, but not necessarily when the consequences are:
1) you will just get in a way of a battle and be a great inconvenience instead of helping
(of which she was aware of)
2) getting your guard punished/possibly killed
3) you hurting the person you are supposed to "help" (I'm not gonna repeat myself, you can read it here)
4) you dying for no reason
5) if you somehow don't get killed, you becoming a burden to medics who could devote their time to people who did help or got hurt by ricochet of the attack.
Second of all, you are putting it in a way that implies that Hinata did that only once, and you are wrong.
At some point of someone consistently doing the same thing you have to admit they either do that maliciously or that they are plain stupid.
I'm just gonna bring a few examples (that I talked about before over and over, but I'll do that again, especially for you)
Shimamaru: almost died
Hinata: "But I want to stay beside Naruto too"
Does she care? No. Naruto-kun. That's all she cares about.
But maybe that's because they weren't too close, because who cares about a person from your class that is your comrade in war, he's not Naruto-kun.
How about her own teammate BEING CARRIED OUT BY MEDICS?
The oiment Hinata has is more important for Naruto-kun, who is completely fine.
Who cares about Kiba, he is just being taken by medical team, but he can be an afterthought, they are just teammates after all.
How about her family?
Neji, who will be punished for hurting her (because, as you recognize YOURSELF, it's before Naruto vs Neji fight, so the punishment WILL BE THERE), who asked her TIME AND TIME again to just give up. Why will he do that, huh? Maybe because he had known what happened TO HIS FATHER FOR JUST THINKING ABOUT HER IN A BAD WAY.
Anyway, how about making Neji hurt her, then provoking him by RUBBING IT IN HIS FACE THAT HE IS BELLOW HER?
Neji just said (again) that she should give up and stop the suffering, she just casually mentions that he is "lost and suffering" because he's not in the main family.
(And before you say it was nice of her, NEJI AND THEREFORE MANGA showed us he didn't appreciate it, and the guard also saw that Neji was provoked and WAS ABOUT TO CHARGE AT HER FOR THAT COMMENT)
But ok, maybe they weren't close enough of a family, so it was acceptable to provoke him and get him to be punished, because you know...
Naruto-kun is watching, so...
How about closer family? How about her own sister?
(Now, I don't like to quote the movies because I prefer to base my opinion on canon manga only, but you, Hinata Fans, love it, so let's go)
(Credit to whoever made it, I can't find the original)
Hanabi was just kidnapped, but Hinatas mind is occupied, because well... Naruto-kun 🥺
BUT OK, MAYBE, JUST MAYBE, THEY DIDN'T HAVE ENOUGH OF A BOND BETWEEN THEM TO CARE.
Let's look at the person who took care of her for her whole life, her guard, her family, let's look at Ko:
Oh wait, we have already seen it.
It doesn't matter who it is, if it's her comrade, friend, teammate, cousin, sister, guard. If that person is not Naruto-kun, their life or well being is irrelevant to Hinata.
She cares about Naruto, that's it. Nothing else and noone else matters.
Do you understand?
So back to the beginning:
At some point of someone consistently doing the same thing you have to either admit they do that maliciously or that they are plain stupid and when it comes to LIFE OF OTHER PEOPLE I'll say that it either way makes you a bad person 🤷♀️
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
So, in conclusion:
I did read your ask, I just assumed (and that is my mistake, I apologize) that if you are protecting Hinata, you shoud know first thing about her, but not only you didn't read the manga, you didn't even read the parts that had Hinata in it.
So, please, first read at LEAST chapters that have Hinata in them, before you speak (It's not a lot, she is a background character after all) or I'm not gonna answer to you again, because I'm tired of repeating myself for a 1000th time.
a second top five fucked up Naruto things?
ooo a 6-10, if you will. Here's the top 5.
More supremely fucked up things in Naruto:
The whole Hyuuga thing is terrible, awful, wretched. The vast majority of the clan are enslaved to the main branch. On top of that, they can be made to experience extreme pain whenever a main branch member wills it. Everyone finds out about it and nothing happens.
ROOT, as a whole, was once sanctioned by the powers that be. No one made any real moves to stop it once Hiruzen vaguely decided it shouldn't be a thing anymore. Having children kidnapped, branded, and then made to carry out the most heinous of missions is...terrible, at the least.
Everything about Jiraiya, frankly. We are introduced to him as a huge and powerful pervert (so what are the people he pervs on supposed to do?), he steals money from Naruto after failing to provide him with any sort of love and support despite apparently being his godfather, then he goes on to...perv over women and, uh, kind of contain the nine-tails for a few years. Then we're supposed to feel terrible, just terrible, about his death.
The whole Gaara thing in Suna is pretty fucked up. He was sealed before he was even born, and the seal sucked. He was blamed for the seal sucking, he was viewed as a total monster instead of a conduit of a chakra demon doing its thing, then he got a lobotomy from Naruto. His ending is a little too tidy, and I fear that things will continue to suck.
Kind of revisiting, but...Everything to do with the Uchiha massacre is horrendous. These people are driven to the edges of the village because the rest of the villagers fear the power that none of them can harness to take over the Kyuubi. They deal with years of being shunned. They decide that this doesn't sit right. An extremely young boy, Itachi, finds this out, and his cousin who also knows this information ends up dying in extremely suspicious circumstances. The indoctrinated teen decides to go to the village, and the village tells him what to do. I covered this in the other post, but the lead-up deserves a separate breakdown here.
yapping abt my neji & hinata role-swap au
ok so hinata is in the branch house and a genius, neji is in the main house and weak. their ages are also swapped, putting hinata on team gai and neji on team 8, and their personalities stay the same for the most part so this is how i think they'd react in eachothers places!!
neji kind of 'gives up' on becoming strong because it seemed to come so naturally to those around him, like hinata and hanabi. this is where naruto would come in for his development. this only rlly works cuz he'd be on team 8 and not team gai, otherwise lee would've helped with that. hanabi is also put as heir instead of him and he's incredibly jealous and pissed about it.
hinata is still non-violent and soft spoken, but due to her talent/genius she's pressured heavily into training constantly and sent on missions etc no matter how much she hates it, like she still has intense social anxiety. maybe she develops a kind of aversion to death/violence/shinobi in general after her father dies? since hizashi would be her dad in this au. i think she'd end up taking her treatment a little more face down, then naruto could inspire her to stand up for herself, seeing how he didn't take the villagers shit to heart and proved them wrong. he makes the same promise to change the clan once he's hokage but i think he also encourages her to make some of the firat steps herself.
i don't think hinata would have the same animosity towards neji as neji does to her in canon, but i do think she'd resent him silently a little? but she cares for him too, and tries to take care of him when hiashi won't. buuut then neji takes that as a sign of pity, rejecting it and causing a rift between them. he doesn't know why she takes everything so quietly, why she doesn't speak up and why she lets people assume she's weak when she was blessed with all that talent.
neji's so insecure about being weak that he fully hides it, clinging onto the expectations of his power as the eldest hyuuga son and how ppl percieve him as mysterious. "he's so cool what is he hiding?" absolutely jack shit. maybe something undiagnosed. he's a little pathetic here and i love it.
they make up and hinata is the most doting older sister/cousin ever and neji doesn't give up (and isn't a bitter little shit to her and hanabi!! yay!!) and then neji gets with naruto and hinata gets with tenten. and they all live happily ever after cuz i am not killing hinata or neji fuck that
#ill be using this au to spread naruneji and hinatan propaganda btw#hinata haters get out#theyre both my babies they deserved better (i am not giving them better this time)#naruneji#nejinaru#naruto manga#naruto shippuden#neji hyuga#neji#hinata hyuga#hinata#naruto au#alternate universe#hinaten#i might give neji short hair here#based on the hc that hinata in classic had short hair cuz of her being a black sheep#shed have long hair here then#and the bangs would cover the caged bird seal#neji should have lived btw and i shouldve been hired to write him#hes my son and also me#naruto spoilers
It is interesting to think about the parallels between Sasuke and Neji. They both ended up victims of the system in some way. Neji died protecting his cousin, a member of the Hyuuga main branch, as he was born and bred to do. A victim of his own destiny, like he claimed in the Chunin exams. Sasuke finally relented to Naruto's self-righteous obsessions and bullheaded resolve. The system goes unchanged and unopposed once more. What an unfortunate end to both characters.
PROPAGANDA
HINATA HYUUGA (NARUTO)
1.) When Hinata was introduced she goals, weaknesses, interesting interactions and relationships with characters other than naruto and a personality of her own. Post timeskip in shippuden, however, she was reduced down to simply 'naruto's future love interest' and little else. The entire Hyuuga plotline was dropped and she no longer had any relevance or personality outside of naruto. Part 1 hinata was shy and insecure on the surface but underneath that she was determined & hardworking, even to her own detriment. Her struggles were compelling. Her interactions with neji and her family are something you look forward to seeing more of. In shippuden she's like a flat carboard cutout of hinata. Her shyness exaggerated, her relationship with her family suddenly perfectly fine and boring. In part 1 naruto inspires her to keep trying but he isn't the reason she's working so hard, in shippuden he's pretty much all she thinks about. Her change in character design really highlights these changes - the perfect little wife for cishet men to fantasise about.
2.) Her entire personality and arc is boiled down to “shy uwu waifu in love with Naruto” and basically any development she gets, which is barely at all because Kishimoto hates women, is as attributed to NARUTO and Naruto only. Even her reaction to her beloved COUSIN’S DEATH makes her be like “omg I love Naruto” and serves to further NaruHina, which is absolutely insane she would Not react like that. Naruto only starts being romantically interested in her at the beginning of like, The Last movie, which is after 500ish episodes of her being treated as the sidelined love interest who is devoted to a guy who only cares about her when she’s a damsel in distress on a fight.
There are so many parts of her character that are/could be interesting, like her part in the Hyuga Clan due to being born as a superior and her dynamic with her cousin Neji as a result, (which could have had SO many great moments of reconciliation and standing up for each other grrr grrr) an exploration of the impact of her bullying & being looked down upon (even when she’s supposed to be a superior member, which adds to the shame) LIKE MANY OF THE CAST, seriously the people Naruto trauma dumps to are mostly consisted of people unfairly treated like that and it could have been used to further NaruHina WHILE showing her struggles
She is an incredibly capable fighter but the moment Naruto is there, she instantly becomes defenseless and needs to be saved by her crush, mostly as a “wow look at him isn’t he so brave and kind to do this for her?!”
There’s an episode where she is literally used as a defenseless punching bag for Pein by trying to sacrifice herself for Naruto and telling him she loves him, JUST so he can be more angry and have more motivation to beat Pein’s ass (aside of the yknow. Killing his loved ones thing) AND her confession is ignored by Naruto for the rest of the series. Just like any moment she shows her crush for him is met with obliviousness, which would be fine if they weren’t the main couple and didn’t go on for THE ENTIRE SERIES!!!!
In Boruto, the shitty sequel, Naruto is basically her deadbeat husband in her bland lavander marriage and Boruto is rightfully mad about Naruto’s distance from the family and even says he left her basically a single mom and barely pays time to the family, and Hinata’s role in the show as the housewife is being like “no you see Boruto you have to understand your father’s pov as the Hokage” and the narrative treats NaruHina’s marriage as a Good, Healthy Thing as if the characters are not miserable in this marriage.
3.) Man I don't even like her that much but she deserved SO much better. She was introduced as the heiress of a really powerful and renowed clan with complex dynamics, yet the author somehow decided to do almost NOTHING with the potential she had, and gave her very little personality besides being shy and fawning over the protagonist. She gets slightly more active in Shippuden (part 2), but her character still pretty much revolves around her love for Naruto, which sucks because again, she has so much potential. It's no secret that women in Naruto are badly written, and Hinata certainly is no exception. The male characters get dozens of episodes/chapters about their motivations, their backstories, what pushes them to keep going, and Hinata gets almost nothing besides her lifelong crush on Naruto that we are reminded of literally every time she's on screen.
NIKI NIHACHU (DREAM SMP) (CW: Bullying)
1.) Ohhhh my FUCKING GOD okay. So first off, MCYT (Minecraft Youtube) is not synonymous with the Dream SMP. The Dream SMP is MCYT, but not all MCYT is Dream SMP. I just want to make that clear before I start. (Also, the DSMP characters are referred to with a c! in front of their name, and the person playing that character is referred to with a cc! in front of their name.)
Anyway. So Niki, right. The Dream SMP had a LOT of ccs, and I can’t remember all of them off the top of my head but I think there were like…four women? Out of…god, at least fifteen people, maybe twenty? Which would have been fine, I’ve seen worse ratios. But the thing is, a lot of the male ccs’ fans were uhhh…not great about treating cc!Niki like a person. We’re gonna move on to her character in a bit, but cc!Niki got bullied, harassed, and criticized no matter what she or her character did.
c!Niki is either a mean girlboss or gentle and nice. When I saw people talking about c!Niki while the DSMP was active, their views of her were very one dimensional. Maybe part of this was because cc!Niki didn’t get a chance to develop her character as much as someone like cc!Tubbo did. One of the DSMP’s fatal flaws was a lack of communication and organization, and…yeah. It was very difficult for white male ccs to organize people for lore, but for cc!Niki it was…also bad. The misogyny that cc!Niki experienced from fans is inseparable from the misogyny that c!Niki also received. It’s a really shitty package deal.
OH AND ALSO. You know how the DSMP ended by getting like, wiped from existence or some shit I don’t remember. And Dream did this without letting the majority of the ccs resolve their character’s stories/arcs? Will it surprise you to learn that afaik cc!Niki wasn’t informed about this at first? Yeah. Overall she was just treated horribly by everyone and so was her character.
2.) Literally only like three people ever did storylines with her, two of whom immediately dropped it as soon as something else came up. She didn't even get to officially participate in the revolution despite repeatedly offering aid, and eventually ended up just. Building her own underground city. To have something to do. The only people to actually include her in storylines consistently ever were the anarchists, toward the end of the server.
3.) ok, so, the thing is, this isn’t just about the DSMP. historically, in mcyt spaces, women content creators have been harassed and treated terribly by fans (and talked over/ignored by other ccs and the fandom) for, essentially, daring to be women, and niki has been subject to that. cc!niki (the real life person, for those who don’t know mcyt player/character differentiations) was/is really good friends with cc!wilbur soot (i haven’t been keeping up with this corner of streaming recently but assume this is the case). however, despite being close irl friends and working really well with one another, niki had to deal with endless bullshit from people who shipped her and wilbur (and people who didn’t!!), so much so that they stopped streaming together for a while. this is just some background so you understand the baseline we’re working with here. (this is going to be more of a meta analysis on how cc!niki was treated by other ccs, as that’s my specialty and also in a rp space it affects how her character was played) (fan treatment of her also factors in a lot here since fiction is highly affected by realities like this in mcrp) niki’s character in the dream smp, and the lore she had (she went from a kind baker to one of the last holdouts against a tyrannical government, to a broken girl resorting to revenge for stability, to someone who was finally able to find healing and support in a safe space and worked to do the same for others) was largely ignored or disregarded by both fans and the other content creators on the server. hell, when her best friend died nobody even bothered to tell c!niki! she had to find out from his own goddamn ghost! (can you tell i’m mad about this?) she put up with so much shit on that server, in-character and out, and never even got to have a fucking break about it. justice for c!niki!
