This might be a bit weird of me to send to you but idc, it's a topic that is fascinating me today and you're someone who has thoughts on lots of other things that are fascinating to me!
Anyway, do you know anything about super recognizers? Basically the opposite of face blindness. I have it, and for a while I just thought everyone around me must be super unobservant but apparently it's actually kind of freakish of me that I can remember the eye color of practically everyone I've ever seen in my life lol
idk what exactly I'm asking of you, I'm mostly just curious if face blindness/the opposite of that is anything you've thought about much before! I sometimes wonder if it's linked to autism but from what I've seen so far it doesn't seem to be??
i havent heard about this until you mentioned it but it fits into the larger pattern of humans having varying intensities of function in their perceptual systems. psychosis spectrum dysfunction and paranoia is theorized to be a sort of hyperactivity in the pattern-recognition part of the brain, where you can't STOP seeing coincidences, patterns, and similarities, which then leads to paranoia about people sending you 'messages' which then leads to surveillance paranoia. it's happened to me and it's very weird
i experience something like youre describing and it's one reason i have the typical autistic gaze-avoidance: faces are too much information and it's like looking into the sun. i dont have the study on hand but if i remember correctly i read a brain imaging study of autistic vs. allistic people who were shown faces, and the autistic subjects displayed much more brain activity in regions related to processing information than the allistics, and were perceivably expending much more energy and stress in the perception. this would account for the autistic symptom of apparent "face blindness" being so common in people who otherwise cannot be beaten by any average challenger in a game of Guess Who, who have pattern recognition skills so powerful they can explain at length the difference between various diesel locomotives no one else can tell apart (or whatevr): its because looking at a human face is physically painful, so the autistic toddler learns not to do it as they develop mature eyesight, and then years of not looking at faces start to take their toll as their social skills lag behind because if you arent looking at a face you cannot perceive someone's expression, nor can you learn to imitate it!
early autism therapy SHOULD be working on desensitizing (without force) young children to these perceptual stress tests so they can tolerate the noxious stimulus. i have found that Adderall in particular helps me a LOT with this. i wish someone had explained to me what i just wrote in the above paragraph when i was about 4, because explaining the reasons why i will benefit from doing something unpleasant (like looking at a human face) is the only way to start to overcome the pathological demand avoidance that goes along with most autistic diagnoses: we get so fucking traumatized from being told or forced to do things against our will that it becomes a major dysfunction.
as ive gotten older a lot of my questions about why everyone seemed to behave differently than i do were answered by the observation that the majority of people are simply not noticing things. they are perceiving the world with far less detail than i am unless they choose (and/or are trained) to bring certain details into focus. those are skills that can be taught, i absolutely do not believe in innate talents or abilities, you can teach almost anyone to do almost anything, mastery is a matter of motivation, not god-given talent. but the majority of people are not noticing eye color, skin texture, and are bad even at accurately perceiving color, size and shape. they can look at a face without getting an electric shock. they dont receive a full body shot of adrenaline when a familiar voice actor shows up in a cartoon. they dont consciously hear the cat meowing three blocks away. their attention can be drawn to these things, if someone else points them out, but their subjective experience seems not to be, usually anyway, a series of clamoring and dazzling sensate intrusions which are impossible to ignore or not consider carefully. it seems safe to assume that most of the time, most allistic people only experience this state of consciousness while on drugs or otherwise in an altered mental state. when i started experiencing various drugs finally, i was able to see how similar these experiences were to normal or regular/recurrent daily sober experiences for me. while stone sober, i can get stuck in a bathroom because im looking at the tile pattern in exactly the same way someone on mushrooms will.
i think also it's important to emphasize to ourselves and to children that the human social group benefits from having someone with these abilities around. this is why the genotypes for autism are so common, and why they survive, and why we have archaeological and anthropological evidence of human settlements absolutely always having a minority of Weird Guys around who just know things but usually arent too interested in living in town with everyone else.
so super recognizers fit into the pattern of hyperlexia, hypercalculia, supertasters etc that are very commonly represented in autism. i guess i have a weird form of this where my recognition abilities will ping so hard on people that look SIMILAR that it ends up making me worse at recognizing people sometimes because i cant stop seeing their similarities.

I want to hug every person with Hyperlexia and Hypercalculia who went through the public school system
#I had hyperlexia as a child. I taught myself to read. I could understand complex literature with decent comprehension#And somehow my teachers managed to turn me into an adult who hates reading#I wasn’t gifted. I was an autistic child who got hyperfixated on reading books. that’s all it took for them to label me as gifted.#hyperlexia#hypercalculia

its always been my lil autistic joel headcanon that he eats with a downturned fork because as a kid he struggled with fine motor skills and no one really took the time to teach him, so he holds his forks and pencils and stuff a lil wonky. his handwriting is messy because of this
working with wood and blocks and tools was always easier for him than working with pens and pencils, because tools are bigger and you have to learn specific ways to hold them to get them to work. he excelled at wood-shop and math in high school, and did just okay in things like history and english

Matt Stone is autistic because in his Why I Love Math essay his experience sounds like a classic case of hypercalculia and hypercalculia is strongly connected to autism. And Matt regularly shows self stimulatory behaviors. So BOOM autism!
No because bro is biiiiiigggggg into math. Math was my absolute nightmare from elementary up into college (I suspect I have dyscalculia, funnily enough), so I admire his passion, but I could NEVER.
Self stimming is so real, though. A lot of mine I chalk up to my anxiety and nervous energy, though Matt seems to be at least the "calming" force, though whether he's an inwardly calm person or a secret nervous wreck, I do not know.
He and Trey also sit so so weird and it leaves me like "I know what you are" every time I see writer's room footage lmao

Matilda Wormwood from Roald Dahl's Matilda. Has hyperlexia & hypercalculia. Exceptionally bright & well-read. Endlessly curious & fascinated by the world. Has a keen sense of justice & a willingness to serve it herself, often in creative, unconventional ways (not unlike Lisbeth Salander). My autistic icon before I even knew I was autistic.

Ellie and Sarah: audhd and adhd solitarity
no exactly matt u and me are like 🤝🏾🫰🏾🤝🏾 on this, they def give me combined adhd + autism and inattentive adhd vibes. i also personally like to imagine both of them having hyperlexia + dyscalculia bc i imagine tommy and joel having hypercalculia (+ dyslexia for tommy)
ellie and sarah are just super readers that can’t do math for shit, meanwhile tommy is a math wiz who hasn’t voluntarily read a book since senior year. joel is a decent reader and enjoys a good book once in a while, but he LOVES math. he’s always liked it, but ever since sarah and ellie starting coming to him and asking him to get into “miller math genius mode” to help them out, it’s become his absolute favorite thing
#neurodivergent miller tag#the neurotypes!!!!!#tommy probably has hyperactive adhd too he just doesnt know enough abt it to care#he also doesnt want to sit down and read abt it#bc boring#the millers#maddieeeeeee#i love u sm for indulging in psych and brain stuff with me#i think stuff like this fits their characters so well#ellie while joel is helping her with her hw: who even likes math. wtf. nerd

There’s a long pause, and every few moments her hands rise to try and sign something before falling back down again. This repeats several times, the banshee trying and failing to find the words she needs for her HOPELESS request due to fear of the inevitable answer in the negative. But surely it’s worth a try at the very least, right? It must be. It has to be.
⟪ Do you think it could be possible... that there’s something that could allow me to talk? ⟫ Another pause-- that probably didn’t come across the way she meant it, so she quickly follows up, signing once more. ⟪ Something that could give me a voice. Doesn’t even matter if it’s even my voice, at this point. ⟫
#hypercalculia#ic.#v. won't you play with me?#HKTKJKTHK she's just going straight to the best tech guy she knows#cici: all this cool new tech in the world and there's nothing that can let me talk without killing people??? unfair

Fritz: ADHD (Combined Type), NPD, Narcolepsy, PTSD (due to childhood trauma/SA occurring in earlier childhood)
Charlie: Autistic (fluctuates in between semi-verbal and hyperverbal), Anemia, Atelophobia.
Plus our three favorite siblings:
Michael: Dyslexia, Synesthesia (chromesthesia and lexical-gustatory), Misophonia
Evan: Schizophrenia (Schizoaffective, accompanied by Bipolar Disorder), Autistic (goes either nonverbal or hyperverbal with a LOT of stuttering and slurring when stressed), BPD
Elizabeth: ADHD (Combined Type), Anxiety, Atelophobia (my girl have you heard of Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria being stacked on top of that? It’s the worst /gen).
(all Afton kids and MCI gang later develop trauma disorders, with most of them developing some form of PTSD or C-PTSD. Rip to my children *continues to rotate them in mind like a roasting meat kebab over an open flame anyway* </333).

Oh? Surprise Yasuke lore?
And do you remember what happened afterward?
Well...I remember Junko got along with him really well.
Is there anything you can tell us about your sisters in particular?
Oh! Junko was really smart, even when she was little. She had this cool skill where she could tell you exactly how long things were or how long it would take something to cook just by looking at them.
People said she had a good eye for details like that. She could even solve big math problems in her head.
So your sister was capable of hypercalculia?
If that’s what that word means, then yeah, I guess. But she also...she kinda had a problem with her emotions. She cried a lot, sometimes for hours. I remember...sometimes she said she never should’ve been born.
How old was she?
She was only four.
That’s...really strange.
Yeah, but I think she felt a lot better when he got to know Yasuke-kun. He also looked a lot happier when he saw her.
Junko also had a lot of things she did when she was sad, like making things. One time, she spent a month building a sand replica of a church or something at a park by our house. I forget what it was called, but it was really cool...but then it turns out someone destroyed it We never found out who did it.
But after that, Yasuke-kun came out of his house more to hang out with us. I guess he was really happy being with us.

Okay so after lots of typing, consolidating, and thinking, I dug up a few of my more recent OCs who are ND. Enjoy!
1. “Bell” Alon: The son of a member of Perseus, Alon is a master of sounds thanks to his autism and can pick up the slightest details in Morse Code, making him a prime candidate for communications between Perseus members. Alon lost the ability to speak when MK-Ultra caused him to have a stroke. He can sing, however, and communicates through singing songs. Is a sweetheart beyond his job. Romanticality and sexuality: Gay and questioning
2. Esmir “Player” Rios: Originally from a BO3 Retelling AU, Esmir had a rough childhood when his parents were suspected of being associates of Raúl Menéndez’s. Esmir has Dissociative Identity Disorder and currently shares the host body with four other alters. All five have strange senses of humor and make for the perfect friend with thousands of stories to tell. Romanticality and sexuality: Pan and ace
3. Lyudmila “Bell” Anatolievna Chikova: Lyudmila got unlucky with MK-Ultra and has breathing and heart problems, but MK-Ultra also aggregated her separation anxiety, seizures, and hypercalculia (strong mathematical ability). It’s possible she has ADHD but she hasn’t been diagnosed yet. All sh really wants is a good playmate and she will be the happiest kid on the planet. Romanticality and sexuality: Too young to care yet
4. Sergeant Kirill Vasiliyevich Kostylev: A soldier of the 21st Russian motor rifle brigade, Kirill has some serious PTSD between his mother’s constant relationship problems and watching his brother die in battle. To top it off, he has Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) and discovers he has Multiple Sclerosis at the age of 30. Not that it slows him down any. He’ll still live life to its fullest no matter how hard it is to perform basic daily tasks. Romanticality and sexuality: Straight and questioning
5. Hadessah “Bell” Mizrahi: A text subject in her youth, Hadessah bears PTSD and Depression quite heavily. Add MK-Ultra and she develops a fast-forming Alzheimer’s in which she becomes stuck in daily “loops” where she will say the same things day to day. She’s still a gentle sweetheart, however, and will do anything to make someone feel welcome and happy. Romanticality and sexuality: Bi and ace
6. “Bell” Anya. The co-founder of Perseus, Anya helps cultivate the loyalty to Perseus’ cause through rallying and encouraging objectives and outreach to be completed quickly. She has a bit of a superiority complex because of it. It’s this mindset that leads her to start hallucinating an evil force trying to make her fail, which forces her to work harder. MK-Ultra only worsens the symptoms, and she develops schizophrenia. Anya will be a good friend and a great protector if someone gets on her good side and stays there. Romanticality and sexuality: Demi and ace
This took a long time. Hope you enjoyed! All my OCs have PTSD rip
Everyone is so interesting!!
All this Perseus stuff makes me want to talk about Emily and Maxilla
SO COOL!!
#others ocs#luna answers#thanks for the ask!#they are all really interesting#DID is very interesting I've watched a few vids about DID and it's cool that you have an oc with it!

Why are there so few autistics researching about autism?... or we rarely hear about them. Or there are many, but they might be oppressed? Hmmm...
I find autism a really really interesting thing, especially since we're also on the spectrum.
The way we are talked about is really awful, and the entire "autistics need a cure"... NO, fuck, damnit. No!
In my studies regarding the cognitive science aspect, autism, and other neurodivergencies, are very interesting patterns in the algorithmics of cognitive processing, which are natural occurences of deviated parameters in perception.
The turbulent brain, a hypothesis that views cognition and memory as some sort of complex system, described with terms of thermodynamcis, is actually really interesting in these regards.
To summarize it to the maximal simplification: Neurodivergence might be accompanied (correlated, cause and also effect) by a 'more turbulent' brain, or more concretely: the effects of chaotic processes are elevated, resulting in a more or less different way of perception, thinking and communication: Certain parameters underlie more chaotic processes, inhomogeneity of parameters in perception and processing of memories might be more significant.
In my (hypo-)thesis on the extended Bayesian Coding Hypothesis and the turbulent brain, I de-tangle all that stuff.
Interestingly, you can explain a lot of neurodivergent aspects with concepts of non-linearity in cognitive processing:
Such as ineffective/altered perceptive filters, inability to read social cues, hyperactivity (especially also the internalized one), interoception issues, synthesia, dyscalculia, hypercalculia, dyslaxia, hyperlexia, dyspraxia, difficulty controlling focus, bad working memory....etc.
It can all be explained somehow using some mathematical models that can be found in quantum-based computation systems. And it is thrilling. Compounds of math, physics and CogSci find a very neat 'entanglement' here.
It can also hint towards understanding how dissociation and psychosis relate to certain parameters in cognitive algorithmics and the interweaving of it with the body.
Because we love to indulge in speculation:
Also: mathematics might be the raw form of cognition. It sounds odd, but ever wondered what these shapes represent that people see who took DMT in recreational doses? Or the hallucinations people have when they have a near-death experience? Or the shapes psychotic people see? Or the flashbacks traumatized people experience? Or the dreams in REM-sleep?
DMT-rush of this tiny gland in the brain. Trauma alters the brain, the epiphysis/pineal gland might be involved in altered states of consciousness/perception, either due to trauma or/and deviated/altered perception.
Interestingly, elevated DMT-levels could be found not just in the urine of schizoprenic but also autistic people. Autistics who scored higher in hyperactivity and lower in social stuff (forgot words rn sorry) had higher DMT concentrations. (Source:) (DMT is bufotenine)
But back to the speculation of the 'math is raw form of cognition':
"A picture speaks more than thousand words"
Yes, and those fractals/shapes/plots speak more than thousand pictures...
My entire thinking starts with random graph plots or patterns in my mind. When I elaborate further, I can 'unzip' them. They are highly compressed forms of memory: they need low storage capacity. But offer very much information. That is highly effective, and the unconscious part of cognition is like a software of a quantum computer, in a sense...
It allows very fast thinking, but it gets relativized by the far longer distance a thought has to travel across. Furthemore, this non-linear approach "erases errors on the way from the complex towards the simple".
I do not know if it is true for other neurodivergent people, but for me, my 'constellation of parameters' does that with my perception.
Every neurodivergent is different, and so is every constellation of those 'cognitive parameters'...
With this knowledge/research one could help nd people live a better and more authentic life, offer better accomodations, better ways for integration and acceptance, and also, if wanted, a better understanding of oneself.
The order in this chaos is very baffling, interesting, and somehow also soothing and calming to us.
There has been a lot of research about autistics over the years, but this one really took the cake!
This is what happened when researchers attempted to compare the moral compass of autistic and non-autistic people…
