Skill of the Week: Handle a Car That’s Hydroplaning

An important part of manhood has always been about having the competence to be effective in the world — having the breadth of skills, the savoir-faire, to handle any situation you find yourself in. With that in mind, each Sunday we’ll be republishing one of the illustrated guides from our archives, so you can hone your manly know-how week by week.

Hydroplaning is a terrifying situation for even the most experienced driver. It occurs when water is forced under your tires, causing them to leave the surface of the roadway and you to lose control of the car. In normal conditions, your tires are designed to shed water to the sides. But, in deeper pools of water, or when your tires are worn, the grooves on your tires may not be sufficient to force water out of the way. When water isn’t sent to the side, it goes underneath and hydroplaning occurs. At higher speeds, the problem is only exacerbated.

As with most emergency maneuvers, the best way to deal with them is to avoid them entirely. A few pointers for prevention:

Keep tires properly inflated

Replace worn tires

Avoid cruise control in wet conditions

Drive slower in wet conditions

Avoid road edges where puddles tend to accumulate

If you do find yourself losing control, staying calm and making smooth maneuvers is important. As outlined above, what specific actions you take depend on the type of car you drive.

The Cat's Miaow have been experiencing a bit of a renaissance. First was the great 7" split with Rocketship. Now, London based label World of Echo is releasing this 2 LP (bonus cassette) behemoth "The Cassette Years: '92-'93". World of Echo previously released the compilation "Songs '94-'98".

The Cat's Miaow were based in Melbourne, Australia. Members went on to form great bands like Hydroplane, Bart and Friends (both of which have been covered here previously).

The Cat's Miaow must have drawn inspiration from the C86 and Flying Nun sounds. They definitely set the stage for bands like Belle and Sebastian.

I’m absolutely loosing my mind over the COD rallyAU im working on (and have been working on FOR OVER A YEAR).

My Autism is winning… I’m reading spec lists, that i don’t quite understand, to find the correct size for some fucking tires that isn’t even that important. BUT IT MATTERS TO MY BRAIN. Just so i can do some fucking math to find out how fast Ghost would be driving in the rain (hydroplaning and all that obv on his mind). Because he’s a fucking race driver in this AU and so he would know that, BUT I DONT KNOW IT.

Any tips on how to not be this insane on something that does not matter?

its been raining hard all day and i was walking home just now, in the dark, still raining, having to straddle giant puddles all over the place. and i crossed the street at a 4 way stop sign intersection and this guy in a fuckhuge tank of a pickup truck drove up and was sincerely about to roll right thru WHILE I WAS CROSSING and for whatever reason my immediate response in the moment wasnt to yell, or curse him out, or even give him the finger, but to stop for 1.64 seconds in front of his car making eye contact with him making this exact expression and pose before turning and continuing to walk
