1964 Studebaker Avanti R2
The 1964 Studebaker Avanti R2 was a remarkable blend of performance, innovation, and style. Designed by Raymond Loewy’s team, the Avanti was Studebaker’s bold attempt to create a true American grand touring car. Its sleek fiberglass body, futuristic lines, and minimal chrome accents set it apart from anything else on the road.
What truly made the R2 special was its supercharged 289-cubic-inch V8 engine, built by Paxton and capable of producing 290 horsepower. This made it one of the fastest American cars of its time, with a 0-60 mph time under eight seconds and a top speed exceeding 140 mph. The combination of a reinforced chassis, front disc brakes (a rarity in American cars at the time), and excellent aerodynamics gave the Avanti impressive handling and stopping power.
Inside, the Avanti R2 was equally refined, featuring a cockpit-inspired dashboard, aircraft-style toggle switches, and comfortable bucket seats. Despite its innovations, the Avanti struggled in the market due to Studebaker’s declining fortunes, making it a rare and sought-after classic today.
With its striking design, advanced engineering, and thrilling performance, the 1964 Avanti R2 remains an icon, proving that Studebaker could still push boundaries in American automotive history.
