It's Christmas eve... And because I love you all I have not one, but two treats to share for all my lovely hxh friends/followers (esp my fellow Illumi and Hisoka simps)
Tumblr media
This is not one of the treats I've promised, but the gif just reminded me of this, so STORY TIME.
The first time I watched the Greed Island arc, based on the intro sequence alone, I fully believed that the plot was going to be as follows: Bisky (who I thought was a fellow child/tween) would befriend Gon and it would be obvious to us as the viewers that Gon would develop a crush on her.
Killua meanwhile would become increasingly jealous/insecure thinking he's been replaced as Gon's best friend. I thought the arc would be about Gon and Killua learning how to navigate this new hurdle in their friendship.
Based on the above gif, I also believed that, HISOKA of all people would be one to explain to the boys that what Gon felt for Bisky was a crush and not a friendship and it didn't have to impact his friendship with Killua...
I mean, I'm glad we got the arc we did, especially the dodgeball scene. And I'm super glad that Bisky ended up being a wayyy more interesting and plot relevant character than I first presumed. But, I do feel a little bit cheated that we didn't get agony aunt Hisoka... I think about this terrible misunderstanding every time I use/see this gif.

The Zoldyck family and mercy, keep in mind all of this is canon and is not a theory.
Kalluto Zoldyck, dear god heโ€™s gonna have one hell of a villain arc. Like just going by personality heโ€™s violent as hell not even because heโ€™s an assassin he just enjoys killing and like ripping people to shreds with his nen.
Illumi has done far worse but he doesnโ€™t objectively enjoy killing people, Kalluto on the other hand says and I quote โ€œNasty habit, I really need to stop toying with my prey.โ€ After he shreds a Chimera ant and the frame shows the prey in question torn to shreds, for HxH itโ€™s actually one of the more gory scenes and itโ€™s courtesy of an 11 year old child. Now you may say that itโ€™s just an ant however Kalluto says itโ€™s a habit and recognizes that itโ€™s bad but he canโ€™t help himself. Illumi allows his targets one last wish and opts to kill them quickly with a needle to the head however Kalluto cuts all their limbs off before killing them and then continues cutting up the corpse. This is the nature of his nen paper storm where he blows confetti around with a fan, it gets stuck in his prey and then with a slash of his fan can cut through something as string as steel like butter. Combined with the fact Kalluto is still very childish (ya know cuz heโ€™s a child) he doesnโ€™t weigh the pros and cons of just murdering someone because he feels like it, heโ€™ll just do it. He was more raised by his mother and we usually see them together so that begs the question what is or rather how gruesome Kikyoโ€™s nen?
As we know Silva and Zeno only kill for money and they donโ€™t take pleasure in it.
Kikyo shows no mercy, she is a violent person who has outbursts even towards her children.
Illumi follows his father though, heโ€™s a little looser with it allowing himself to enjoy killing and fighting strong opponents.
Milluki doesnโ€™t do assassinations anymore as he prefers not to leave the house but he has a short fuse and probably still enjoys metaphorically ripper someone to shreds.
Killua doesnโ€™t take pleasure in killing people but if itโ€™s to someone threatening to hurt him or his friends he doesnโ€™t feel bad.
Alluka would feel bad about killing someone but she hasnโ€™t because other than Nanika sheโ€™s a regular child.
Kalluto takes after his mother but seems to be more gruesome, he takes pleasure in harming other itโ€™s an itch that he canโ€™t help but scratch.
Now onto the theory part of this, itโ€™s not really a theory more of an educated guess.
Once Silva learned of the way Kalluto kills he was appalled and Kikyo isnโ€™t able to train him unsupervised anymore. Silva has asked Illumi to help fix this behavior because he sees it as unnecessary.

I need to talk. I hope I can make myself clear.
Nowadays, I started reading romance again. I've always been a fan. However, my experience now as a hxh fan is finding a lot of romance tropes Togashi used for his work, which is fun! (I feel validated bc I've been saying he uses a lot of romance tropes since the first time I've read his work).
Nonetheless, I wanted to talk about one specific scene: "Gon, you are light". The parallels of light and darkness is commonly used in shonen (and it always ends up being so gay), but something that may happen in romance is the following. The love interest seems to shine in front of the protagonist (and vice versa), and it usually happens when the MC is feeling so much love for the other person for one reason or the other. The emotions are so strong that well, that person seems to be shining because they are so bright. It's a vulnerable moment for the characters.
And I can't stop thinking about that and then this scene.
Tumblr media
And since I couldn't stop, I remembered some other times in which Gon must have shone so brightly that Killua had to physically look away (since I'm sure this wasn't the first time it happened, he literally said "sometimes", refering to more than once).
And when are some other times in which Killua physically had to look away?
The "I'm really glad I met you" scene.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The dodgeball scene.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'm sure there's a lot of more times in which Gon shone. For instance, during Gon and Hanzo's fight. Killua was literally having a whole moment trying to understand what was happening (of course, it adds to the other conflicts that I'm not mentioning).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
That scene is kind of a theory of mine (I don't usually see it being talked about), but I do believe it's really important. Some chapters later, we see Killua really excited and talking about that fight to his dad.
Tumblr media
And then this scene. Illumi explicitly says that to Killua, Gon is "a radiant presence".
Tumblr media
I really love how Togashi wrote this metaphor since the very beginning and how he continued to developed it. And I can't stop thinking about it so now I'm here on Tumblr. I avoided the angst of the Chimera Arc, of course.

STโœฉRBOY: random hxh hcs
Tumblr media
Now playing- STARBOY by The weekend ft. Killua, Kurapika, Chrollo, Illumi Tw: dissociation
Tumblr media
๐Ÿ’ฟ Kurapika
The most perfect man there is to exist!!?!!
So I know Kurapika had to almost grow up by himself, so I think he can handle household chores very well.
I would like to think that he somehow discovers baking. I just know he would be good at it <3
I just know he has super pretty cursive handwriting -sighs dreamily-
If you hug him, I know he would be so hesitant, but would slowly nuzzle deeper. If you were close to him and finally hug him, he would literally try his best to hold back tears (Please tell him, it's okay to cry!)
He smells so good omfg. I can't decide between Vanilla or some earthy smell, either way, it's so comforting yet at the same time it's like *eyes roll to the back of head*
You can read this for more scent hcs: Serenade my Senses
Call him pretty boy and he would be so shocked the first time, but as he gets used to it, he gives coy smile <33
I like the think it takes him a long time to get comfortable, but when he does it's so soft that it feels like breathing air. He is so touch-starved tho, so I can imagine him getting clingy after a while. (same bro same)
He is the knuckle and neck kisses type of dude *cue the flusters*
He hates Andrew Tate and his fans like he would go spit on them if could, this guy has the most healthy masculinity in all of anime and I love him for that.
Doesn't really understand the concept of memes tbh, he needs some explaining but he will laugh a little when you send them, he will once in a blue moon send memes but only the cat ones.
(realises how much I wrote for him while about to write more. This man has me on a chokehold frfr)
๐Ÿ’ฟ Killua
He has trans-supporting t-shirts for him and Alluka. They are all matching.
Takes Alluka to pride parades! He has them sat on his shoulder the entire time too!!
Cant comfort a person even if his life depends on it. If you are crying he is just there like ๐Ÿง, awkwardly offering you some chocolate robots tho.
He just can't sit without moving every second! Literally a cat ๐Ÿ˜’
Older! Killua around 16-17 is a massive flirt! He is so quick to pull out reactions from anyone and takes a sick pleasure in it too??
Calls himself 'The Rizz lord' unironically.
His top Spotify artists would be Chase Atlantic, Mother-mother, The Scotts, Nirvana, Mitski and the Arctic Monkeys. Basically really an alt-rock/indie thing going on (us bro.)
๐Ÿ’ฟ Chrollo
Mansplain, Manslaughter, Manwhore, Manipulate, Malewife โ„ข๏ธ
Reads macabre literature like Crime and Punishment, No longer human, if we were villains, the secret history etc.
Tbh I feel like unlike how the fandom portrays him, he is a rather normal dude.
Gothic Academia ultra pro max.
Did the Soldier/Poet/King test, wanted 'king' but got 'poet'
Doesn't have pets because he thinks he can not take care of them
He loves animals tho, idk he seems the birds type of guy.
He likes the 'ominous' kind of birds more; like Ravens, Crows, Vultures and eagles.
Listens to Lana Del Ray and Maneskin, no questions asked.
Is scared of diving into conspiracy theories because he knows he would get sucked into the black hole because he is very interested in morbid things.
He is a DC fan, especially Gothan chronicles. (is that what it's called? Yk the things related to Gotham: joker, poison ivy, harlequin etc.)
Tried journalling once, failed terribly, and stopped after a week.
๐Ÿ’ฟ Illumi
Oh wow, he is a difficult one to write about, but you guys love him, so ยฏ\_(ใƒ„)_/ยฏ
I hate to say this, but I think he frequently dissociates, usually for very short periods of time, he doesn't even know it tbh, just thinks he is out of the element.
He is subconsciously under a lot of stress so his mind tries to flee from it by dissociating.
I wrote a little more about this here: Stuck in a vicious cycle
I think he likes potted plants, especially succulents. He is patient so I can see him take care of even the very difficult ones.
If he is going on a mission, he would go to his mother (because he cannot trust his siblings and father in this matter) like 'take care of my child.'
She actually manages to keep it alive somehow??
I think he knows how to do origami (he saw a child making a paper crane once and got curious.)
Illumi genuinely doesn't know how to care for his hair, he just follows whatever his mom tells him to do, so thank Kikuyo for those luscious tresses.
He has a hyper-fixation on mushrooms (not the psychedelic kind you weirdo). He knows the names of a lot of mushrooms.
Just imagine him and Hisoka taking walk and he randomly spots a mushroom and mumbles to himself 'Coprinus comatus'
and Hisoka is like:

More hxh gold from my husband (Long post)
For reference: he's seen the 2011 anime (it was on his recommendation that I started watching hxh in the first place... He may now regret that suggestion) and we've both watched around 1/2 of the 1999 anime together. I've also read the manga which he has not. He enjoys the series in a healthy neurotypical way.
I have a stage 7 adhd hyperfixation with the series.
Overall, it's fair to say, I have MUCH better knowledge of the hxh world/canon/series than my husband does.
However. On occasion, he likes to COMPLETELY baffle me, by stating the most absurd theories/inaccurate takes on the series and then when I correct him, he tries to argue with me. Like, I love you, but you are WRONG do not test me on this. It's led to some hilarious (and not serious in any way, we have a very healthy relationship) arguments where I've taken great delight in proving him wrong.
Below the cut is the most recent and my personal favourite example so far. Contains spoilers for the manga/dark continent arc.
Husband: The current arc is all about the dark continent isn't it?
Me: *trying to avoid spoilers for him* Kind of. It started more focused on the lead up and preparation for an expedition there, and now it's more about what's happening on the journey there. Basically we're on a cruise ship with a bunch of our old faves as well as loads of new characters and there's a whole load of politics and murder going on.
Husband: A cruise ship?
Me: Well, the hxh equivalent I suppose. It's a big boat taking all the rich people and hunters to explore this new "undiscovered continent." Except we know as readers it HAS been discovered and was just kept top secret and never properly explored because it was so dangerous.
Husband: But why are they on a boat?
Me: ??? Because they're going to a new continent? And that's how travel between continents works???
Husband: But it's connected to the world tree? Are they sailing to the tree first, then climbing? Or is it like Onepiece, are they sailing up the tree trunk?
*for context, I've never seen Onepiece, but apparently at some point they sail up and over a mountain. This is according to my husband though, so I'm taking it with a pinch of salt for now.*
Me: ???
Husband: At the the end of the anime Ging said the world tree he and Gon were standing on was only a sapling that had failed to grow. and that, there was another much bigger one at the edge of the world which was connected to the dark continent. His goal was to climb it and discover the dark continent it was attached to.
Me: ... Are you saying... Do you think the dark continent is... At the top of a tree???
Husband: Yeah, not just any tree though. The proper world tree, because it's so tall it reaches into space and there's some kind of planet or something there that orbits it which is the dark continent. They're connected somehow and that's the bit Ging said he wanted to explore...
Me: ...Sweetheart. ... Darling. ... I love you. But no. ... no, no, NO! The dark continent is NOT A PLANET ON TOP OF A TREE!!!! It's a CONTINENT. On the normal hxh planet (Earth???), and they are taking a BOAT across the SEA to explore the CONTINENT. Nobody is sailing up a tree and nobody is going to space. The real world tree was just what Ging used as an example to explain to Gon that there were things that existed beyond the chartered maps of the world he was familiar with and to basically invite Gon to explore with him... Nobody said anything about space, or planets connected to trees. What have you been watching???
Husband: Oh... Are you sure? *withering gaze* Husband: But what about the Chimera ants? They originally came from the Dark Continent didn't they? Me: Yes.
Husband: How did they get to the normal world then? Because I thought they just climbed down the tree and spread through the world from there? This went on for about half an hour until I pulled up the hunterxhunter wiki page that explains exactly why I was right and he was, hilariously and without a doubt, wrong.
Congrats and thank you if you managed to read this far. This was HILARIOUS as it happened and I hope my retelling does it justice!

it's a bit beyond my capacity RN to draw anything for this wonderful holiday, so instead i will share a longstanding fan theory me and @mackernasties have thought about! and that is......is Killua and his dad's side of the family from East Gorteau?
Tumblr media
From a Doylist perspective, it wouldn't make sense for Killua to conveniently have all of this knowledge about East Gorteau, such that he could exposition to Gon about it and bring him up to speed, unless he and his family had some sort of history there.
But if that's the case, then why doesn't Killua or his family ever SAY they are from East Gorteau? For Killua, I believe it is because he himself is unaware of this fact.
Silva and Zeno both seem to have an intimate understanding of East Gorteau's history and internal politics. Though this could be explained by their work as Assassins, that alone could not explain why they felt any inclination to tell Killua about its existence in the past, nor does it explain why Chairman Netero felt the need to bring Zeno into the fight to save East Gorteau's population from eradication by the Chimera Ants.
I believe it stands to reason that Netero would only feel able to bring Zeno into the equation if Zeno himself had something to lose or gain in the fight against the Chimera Ants. But Zeno gives no reason as to why he's decided to participate, other than that Netero called on him. Given the man's nature, it only makes sense to me then, that he would involve himself solely because of his own personal attachments, selfish or elusive though they might be.
But if they are from East Gorteau, wouldn't Silva or Zeno explain where they are from to Killua at some point, or any of the rest of his family, if they were going to talk to him about East Gorteau at all? in my opinion, not necessarily. It's not like Killua's family are the most forthcoming with information to Killua, and from their perspective, if Killua had any cultural ties, he might be tempted to learn more about how the world actually works outside his family. And that would spell trouble for Zeno and Silva, who see Killua as their pawn and prodigy - Any way for Killua to find a sense of belonging or normalcy outside the Zoldyck household is a danger to their legacy. It is intentional on their end to deny Killua a cultural identity.*
But then, why tell him about East Gorteau at all? It may have been relevant for a mission, or it may simply have been Zeno dropping hints and seeing if Killua picked up on them - I can't say. But we have already seen that it's not beyond them to give Killua fragments of information and to intentionally mislead him for their purposes. Telling Killua about East Gorteau like it is something unrelated to them as a family, to see what he does with that information, is pretty in character for them both. Speculating about their intentions feels a bit like trying to psychoanalyze anyone else's abusive family - they do shit that doesn't make sense on purpose and their intentions are deliberately a bit vague. While I believe what we do know about Silva and Zeno lends itself to this theory, there could be something I'm missing. :V
To further my point though, Killua actually being half East Gorteauan (??? xD) also makes the scene where Killua is warning other people in East Gorteau about their leader's death make more sense, narratively. If Killua looked like an outsider to them, a population closed off from the rest of the world, why would they ever listen to him? We already know the people of East Gorteau can have white hair and blue eyes because of Komugi, so personally, I think it's simply because Killua looked like one of them, so to speak. I don't necessarily think that Komugi and Killua are closely related at all - There's simply no evidence to support that - but the incidental similarities in their appearances stand out to me. The similarity in the texture of their hair specifically, as other white-haired humans in HxH like Kite or Morel do not share that hair texture with either Komugi or the Zoldyck's.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Killua and Komugi's hair are both more thick and stiff, the way east Asian hair tends to be a lot of the time, whereas you can see Kite and Morel's hair both fall into smoother, thinner strands. I don't believe this is solely due to hair cut or style, but hair texture - although this is difficult to say for sure, as it appears that Zeno and Silva both heavily style their hair. It's also notable that Killua's hair used to look a little different when he was younger, but I personally chalk this up to his mother styling it the way she liked it.
As for other purely speculative ideas we can draw from this conclusion, I believe this theory also makes the Zoldyck family's history as assassins make more sense. A family of assassins could very easily sprout up in a country under duress and isolation. The family living on an isolated mountain, to which they hold seemingly no other connection to other than legal ownership, would also make sense if part of the family were trying to separate themselves from governmental ties, and especially the high surveillance in East Gorteau - It is also possible Zeno and Silva escaped East Gorteau because of it's strict "spy system", but again, that is purely speculative.
It is clear (at least to me) that Killua's mother's side of the family are meant to be Japanese, even if they are never directly stated to be so, based off Kikyo's name, how she dresses Kalluto, and Kikyo's ideals about family, culture, and respect. Thus, this means that Killua and all his siblings are mixed race - Whether Zeno and Silva are from East Gorteau or not, this seems to be the intention, as the different sides of his family look nothing alike.
*NOTE: It feels intentional on the part of Zeno and Silva to deny Killua a cultural identity to attach himself to, but this is not necessarily the case for Kikyo. It's very clear that Silva favors Killua over his other children, in his own fucked up way, so this could explain why Silva is constantly undermining Kikyo to Killua, moreso than the other Zoldyck children.
The things Killua doesn't like about his mom are that she seems more strict, overbearing, and harsh than his father, but these things are not strictly true. It's simply how Silva portrays himself to Killua, and while I find it not at all unreasonable for this endeavor to stretch to undermining Kikyo's culture - in a deliberate attempt to both undermine Kikyo's authority (misogyny momence) and the importance of a culture to Killua - there is not anything in canon to necessarily prove that this is what's happening. So this part is merely my interpretation of their family dynamics, extrapolated from Canon, under the lens of analyzing the Zoldyck family from the perspective that this theory may be true.
So! What does this change?
.........honestly, kind of nothing? Aside from making Gon and Killua's invasion into a chimera ant-controlled East Gorteau make more sense in hindsight, it doesn't actually change anything about Killua, his family, or the story itself. It's kinda just fun to think about. Sooooo yeah! If you have any insights that prove or disprove this theory, I'd really like to hear them! This isn't something I've seen anyone else bring up, but the topic really fascinated me once I thought about it all that time ago :3

Aaaah Iโ€™m sorry but I got two very different things I want your opinions on:
1. Imagine what it wouldโ€™ve been like if the Kurta clan tragedy never happened, what would it be like for Kurapika?
2. What would it be like if Gon and Noko (the only other kid in Whale Island) were best friends?

I imagine two possible scenarios:
Firstly, Kurapika would have stayed in his hometown, leading a life typical of his clan. In this case, he would probably have lived a very ordinary and peaceful life. He would have grown up in his village, found a partner among his people, started a family, and lived a tranquil existence. The life of the Kuruta clan seemed ill-suited to grand journeys, and Kurapika might have been content with this serenity.
Secondly, Kurapika might have had a desire for adventure. After all, he seemed to enjoy the journey he undertook with his friend Pairo. In this scenario, he would certainly have asked Pairo to accompany him on his explorations. Together, they would have discovered the world, and one thing is almost certain to me: Kurapika would never have abandoned Pairo.

I believe that, in any case, he would have eventually wanted to leave his island to follow in his fatherโ€™s footsteps. After all, he inherited his adventurous side from Ging. Perhaps this would have happened later on, and he would certainly have wanted to be accompanied by Noko.
The relationship between Killua and Gon would have been radically different. As seen in the anime, Killua is always a bit less โ€œKilluaโ€ when they are more than just the two of them and becomes more โ€œserious.โ€ There are a few exceptions, but this can be explained by the fact that Gon has never shown a friendship as close as the one he has with Killua (i hope this makes sense ๐Ÿ˜ญ)
Thus, I think Killua and Gon would have been less close, or at least their bond would have taken longer to develop! (Of course, this depends on Nokoโ€™s personality.)
But in general, I donโ€™t think it would have had a much bigger impact than that!
A/N: There you go, I hope I answered well! I love this concept, itโ€™s a shame youโ€™re the only one who responded to my new concept ๐Ÿ˜”

Hunter x Hunter Theory: "Baseline" Humans
I've got this hypothesis for the various non-nen superpowers: Baseline humans in HxH are still... strange. Like, "can survive with their intact heart out of their chest but drop dead the moment it's crushed" strange and "don't need aura to push tons, just a month's weight training" strange. And my theory is that practicing things has a wildly different effect on HxHverse humans than it does on us. Practice really does make perfect, and what doesn't kill you really does make you stronger. A ton of Killua's assassin techniques boil down to "if you move precisely enough, you can make physically implausible things happen". I still think the claw power originally came from Zeno's mysterious unseen wife being a catgirl, but let's say that actually Silva discovered the technique while copying how his mom uses a scratching post and now they all do it. That dude's heart probably kept circulating his blood after Killua pulled it out because it just Got That Good after doing it continuously for his entire life. In real life, acquired poison immunity is an immune system thing, and it doesn't work on molecularly simple poisons like cyanide because they're too basic to stick antibodies into. Microdosing cyanide can't make you resistant to cyanide. In Hunter x Hunter, that's all out the window; the Zaoldyecks are immune to basically every poison because their bodies are trained to ignore poison, presumably the same way their bodies are trained to break Newton's third law every time they open the front door. People who live in Meteor City have probably built up similar resistances from toxic waste being improperly dumped there.
Sunburn in this universe might be something only children get, because by adulthood they've developed an immunity to UV radiation.

in all seriousness i think the theories about a post-mortem technique activation seem the most fitting to me. when the leaks dropped, one of the first things i thought of was a HxH "Nen after death" situation (and we all know gege is a hxh fan lol), or like minato sealing his chakra in naruto. maybe gojo made a binding vow right as he died where some remnant of his power gets triggered under a certain condition, and it's so potent that it makes it seem like he's actually there. and once time's up, he'll be gone for good. this way, it lets gojo have one last major assist and proving that he's got that dog in him, without necessarily stealing yuji's thunder.
if it's just a hallucination and nothing more, then that would be super disappointing after such a massive cliffhanger, so i think it's less likely. this feels like it's gonna be gojo's last hurrah, or else what's the point?
my PERSONAL wish fulfillment theory is that he sacrifices his six eyes in exchange for coming back to life, because it would make me so happy for him to get the character development of living as a normal-ish person (Binding Vows by Silvershine i owe you my life), but i think ch 236 felt soooo much like a real send-off that i don't think this is going to be a permanent comeback (even though i want that so badly lol). but imo it will definitely be HIM and not a bodysnatched/possessed version or anything lol.
