Gotta be honest: it took me a bit to remember hurricane naming conventions. I thought this was about some random woman named Fiona who is apparently some horrifying unstoppable monster that is treated completely mundanely.

Ride or Die, Remember?
Request: Yes or No
Pronouns: He/Him/His, M!Reader
Summary: When his life takes a swift and abrupt turn, Lip Gallagher is left feeling a storm of emotions such as heartbreak and anger. In the midst of the hurricane, he doesn't realize what's standing right in front of him.
CW/TW: Typical Shameless warnings, Karen's assault on Frank mentioned, angst(?), the best friend trope
~~~
He had to find Lip before the Gallagher took a nosedive into manslaughter territory.
The cold nipped annoyingly at his exposed face, the viciousness of the freezing temperatures having luckily gone down with the slow arrival of spring and summer but still cold enough to give someone hyperthermia if they weren't careful. He fiddled with his fingerless gloves, clouds forming from his lips each time he huffed out some air. His legs maneuvered him down alleyways and sidewalks; be it by luck or a divine deity being merciful, he hardly had a rough time with the slippery, iced-over ground.
(Y/N)'s eyes locked on the familiar figure crossing the street who slammed his hand into the back of a car that drove by him without slowing down or stopping, relief feeling his veins at the sight of him. Lip looked too relaxed to have heard the news of what Karen had done. Good, but it only meant (Y/N) had the horrible job of breaking it to him. He crossed the street and weaved around those bustling around the sidewalk, almost wincing when he heard Joey and his brother giggling at the bottom of the stairs when Lip stepped by them.
"Be a pal, Lip. When you and Frank get done passing around, uh, 'Daddyz Girl', why don't you send her over to our place?" Joey snickered again, his cheeks a rosy red from his laughter and the cold. (Y/N) groaned internally and slammed his shoulder against Joey's as he stepped past him, shooting the boy a withering glare.
"Get lost." He snapped at him and watched Joey snatch the back of his little brother's hoodie with a grumble before he walked away scowling. (Y/N) licked his dry lips and turned his head upward toward Lip, a grimace forming at the dumbfounded, near puppy-eyed look on Lip's face. His best friend stared down at him from his spot on one of the steps, head tilting ever so slightly to the side.
"You have any idea what the hell he's talking about?" Lip questioned, the metal clanging beneath his boots as he slowly stepped down the stairs toward him, bits of snow flying from his shoes. (Y/N)'s eyes flickered desperately between Lip's vibrant blue ones, words heavy in his throat but his mouth refusing to form any of them for the sake of Lip's heart. The Gallaghers were a tough family but each of them had their weak points.
Besides, how the hell could you break the news about a video floating around showing their best friend's dad and crush fucking? (Y/N) certainly had no idea.
"(Y/N)..." Lip lifted his brows at him, a frown beginning to tug at his lips when the teen in front of him remained deathly silent. The suspicion seeping into his eyes only made (Y/N) wince and avert his gaze. "Who the fuck is 'Daddyz Girl'? Is it about Fiona? Is it- is it Debs? V?"
"I..." (Y/N) clamped his mouth shut and rolled his head back, releasing a low groan into the cold morning air. He stared at the gloomy gray clouds floating overhead and dropped his head back to gaze at his friend again, his hand reaching out to pluck the cigarette from between his fingers and take a deep inhale. Lip watched him closely, his brows only furrowing further. Releasing the smoke in a sigh, he pursed his lips. "It's honestly better if I... if I showed you, Lip."
It certainly hadn't been any better showing him, perhaps it'd been worse.
The agonizingly long wait for the site and video to load with Lip's face right up on the laptop's screen definitely hadn't soothed his jittering nerves. It'd nearly given him a headache when the video finally loaded and Lip's eyes almost bulged out of his head at the sight of Karen naked as the day she'd been born on his father's equally bare lap. The silence from Lip - horribly filled in with pants, moans, skin slapping on skin, and Frank's drunken mutterings - only forced (Y/N) to tear himself away from his windowsill and close the laptop before it drove him crazy.
"That fucker." Lip snarled, and the typically calm boy (Y/N) knew was replaced with a rage-filled Gallagher. Lip shot up from the desk chair and snatched his coat, slipping it on hurriedly as he stumbled out of (Y/N)'s bedroom and practiced raced down the hallway toward the front door. He tossed it open and stomped down the porch, a gust of cold wind slipping into the house.
"Fuck," (Y/N) hissed, almost tripping over his untied laces trying to follow his friend out the door, the cool metal of the doorknob making him flinch when he shut the door behind him. His eyes tracked Lip storming down the sidewalk and toward the Jackson house just down the street by the elevated train tracks. Shit, shit, shit. (Y/N) called out to him as he attempted to catch up. "Lip! Jesus, Lip, just- let's think about this, huh? What- What are you even going to do, Lip?"
"He fucked my girlfriend, (Y/N)! What the hell do you think I'm going to do?!" Lip snapped over his shoulder, his trembling hands curling and uncurling. (Y/N) knew Lip well enough to think of just a few things Lip was capable of, with murder as a very slim option for the otherwise Harvard-smart teenager.
(Y/N) bit his lip "Lip, you know Karen has been fucking half the guys at school! Is she really worth being this?" He still vaguely recalled the day Karen had approached him with batted lashes and a coy smile, as well as the sullen look that fell on her face when he dismissed her with a scoff. "She's not even your girlfriend!"
Spinning around on his heel to face him, Lip snatched the collar of his hoodie and tugged him close enough for their noses to bump. "I love her." He whispered lowly, his bottom lip threatening to quiver before he released him and resumed his warpath toward the slim two-story house. Karen coincidentally stepped outside and pointedly ignored Lip's questions until she disappeared down the road with the dirty blonde staring after her hopelessly.
His jaw clenched and his eyes scanned the area around them until they locked on one of the cars parked in an alleyway. Lip made a beeline for it and fumbled with the pockets of his coat until he pulled out a makeshift picklock to mess with the door. (Y/N) rolled his lips into his mouth and squeezed his eyes shut, groaning again when he heard the soft click of the door unlocking. Fucking Steve.
"Fuck," (Y/N) sighed heavily and dug into his pockets until he found his phone, flipping it open and dialing in the number he had memorized since he was a child. He pressed it against his ear and watched Lip get inside the car to hotwire it. His older cousin's cheery voice greeted him sweetly. "Hey, Kev? I, uh... I need you to drive down to Sheila's place. I think Lip might actually try to kill Frank. 'Kay, thanks."
Once he hung up, he crossed the street toward the car and grabbed the door before Lip could shut it. "What are you doing, Lip? Are you going to run your pops over the second you see him? Stealing a car is one thing, using it to commit manslaughter is a whole other ballpark. Don't act stupid when you're the smartest asshole in this shitstain of a place."
"He can't keep getting away with this bullshit, (Y/N), he can't. That good-for-nothing piece of shit..." Lip's teeth clamped down on his bottom lip, his leg bouncing furiously and hands gripping onto the steering wheel so tightly his knuckles turned a new shade of white. "I love her. I fucking love her and he- he-"
"I get it, alright? I know it sucks to get your heart broken, trust me, I know." (Y/N) released a shaky sigh and rubbed his cold fingers against his forehead. "Listen, I... I just ask that you don't kill him, okay? Get in a punch or two and leave it be. I don't want to have to visit you in the same prison my old man is locked up in, alright?"
Lip let out a deep sigh. "Yeah... yeah, fine. I... I'll try not to." He muttered quietly, his rage finally simmering down and out of manslaughter territory. (Y/N)'s lips pulled back into a tight-lipped smile and he stepped away from the car to let Lip slam the door shut and pull out into the neighborhood's main road.
Roughly fifteen minutes passed before Frank turned a corner further down the sidewalk and made his way over to the Jackson house. Once he was close enough, the car sputtered to life and sped toward him, barreling down trash cans and swerving around to catch the panicked running man until Frank slid over the hood of another car, forcing Lip to ram into the side of it. (Y/N) exhaled a sigh of relief when Kevin finally pulled up and the two quickly rushed over to the Gallaghers as Lip began to pummel his fist and feet into Frank's body.
"Come on, come on! Calm down, alright?!" Kevin shouted and leaned down to grab Lip's arms, managing to pull him off his father for a brief moment until Lip shoved him away and went in for seconds. (Y/N) quickly dove in between the two and roughly took Lip by the shoulders, digging his fingers into his jacket and pushing him back.
"You're bleeding, Lip, come the fuck on. You fucked him up enough, okay?" Lip's chest heaved, his lips curled into a sneer and a trickle of blood slipped down the side of his head from an injury on his temple. His feet dug into the ground, hands grasping onto the sides of (Y/N)'s hoodie to push him away. "Lip."
Kevin pointed a finger at him and planted himself firmly in front of Frank. "That's enough, Lip. Listen to (Y/N) and get the fuck out of here!"
With one final, forceful push from (Y/N), Lip relented and swung his arm around his friend's waist, allowing the teenager to guide him away from his bloody and bruised father. He remained silent on the walk back to (Y/N)'s place, only heavy panting filling the air between them. The tension in his muscles and limbs began to disappear and the storm of fury in his eyes gave way to a look of pure heartache and betrayal. (Y/N) could only pat his side and led him to his bedroom.
Lip collapsed on the bed and tiredly shrugged off his coat and gloves, blindly tossing them aside somewhere in the room. (Y/N) searched his room and bathroom, collecting some cotton balls, a bandaid, and rubbing alcohol. Hardly a proper med kit but it was all they really had in the house. He tossed the supplies on the bed and stood in front of Lip, forcing his blank stare away from the wall and onto him.
"Ready?" (Y/N) dipped his fingers into Lip's curls and gently tugged his head back. He used his free hand to unscrew the cap of the rubbing alcohol and press one cotton ball against it, giving the bottle a quick tilt to soak up the cotton before he began dabbing at the injury with a slightly crinkled nose. Lip's hands moved to rest against (Y/N)'s thighs, his fingers digging into him with each painful prick of pain that shot through his head.
Once finished, (Y/N) wiped away at the liquid with his thumb and released Lip so he could fiddle with the bandaid. Lip dropped his forehead onto (Y/N)'s stomach, his hands beginning to inch upward ever so slowly. His fingers dipped under the hoodie, the rest of his hands pushing up the hoodie and shirt underneath to expose (Y/N)'s stomach. Lip tilted his head and pressed his lips against the bare skin, the bridge of his nose pushing up the clothes further.
"What are you doing?" (Y/N) asked softly, freeing one of the bandaid wings and working on the other.
"Destressing." Lip muttered against his skin, continuing to nuzzle and kiss whatever skin he could reach. His lips felt dry and cracked against him, and (Y/N) nearly squirmed when Lip swiped his tongue over his happy trail. His hand flew down to grab hold of Lip's hair again, forcing his head back and slapping the bandaid over the cut.
"We haven't done that together since seventh grade, Lip." (Y/N) reminded him with raised brows, scooping up the bloodied cotton and bandaid papers into his hand and tossing them in the small trash can by his desk. Lip's hands dropped over his lap and his lips slightly jutted out, his sharp gaze following (Y/N) around the room.
"So? Friends get each other off all the time." Lip pointed out, his hands shooting out to grab the bottom of (Y/N)'s hoodie and drag him closer toward him, face pressing into his side again.
"And look where getting off with Karen got you, Phillip." (Y/N) wriggled around in Lip's hold and tumbled onto the bed, his back meeting the mattress and only prompting Lip to crawl over him. Despite himself, he released a breathy laugh when Lip's mouth pressed into his neck and his cool hands slipped under his hoodie.
"This is different." Lip's voice came out muffled, his words wiping the smile off his face and making his heart twist uncomfortably. God, how he hated it.
"'Cause you don't love me." (Y/N) breathed and moved his hands to press against Lip's shoulder blades, effectively pushing him up and off him. Lip flopped beside him onto the mattress and blinked at him, his brows twitching down into a furrow.
"No shit I love you, (Y/N). You've been my ride-or-die since first grade. You're basically a Gallagher now." Ah, fuck, that one stung more than it needed to. (Y/N) forced out a hum of acknowledgment and inhaled sharply through his nose, his body rolling over so he could reach out and grab his cigarette pack from the nightstand.
"Yeah, well, last I checked-" He messed with the lighter until it flickered on, taking a deep inhale once the cigarette lit. He pushed himself up against the headboard and breathed out a cloud of smoke. "-brothers don't sleep together, Lip. Besides, you said it yourself: you don't swing that way. You only like fucked up chicks who'll never like you back."
"I don't want to fight today, (Y/N). I'm fucking serious." Lip leaned back into the pillows with a hint of a scowl on his face. "I've had a shit enough day as is."
"Whatever," (Y/N) shook his head lightly. "We can play video games until you forget about Karen and your dad and all that other bullshit, alright? But if you want to mess around with someone, it won't be with me."
"Fine."
Keep your hands off my woman!!
Leaving aside the most important part of the chapter, Yor must kiss her husband for world peace and the Twiyor nation to be happy.
I think it's a good message if we look deeper into how the stereotypical duality of women is portrayed to us, which I think is a message that can encompass anyone in general.
The most conventional romantic movies are usually about the man being - stereotypically - the strongest and the one who must protect the woman, who wins his sensitive heart and makes the hero bring out his sweetest feelings.
Becky being a little girl has in her heart the fantasy of a sweet romantic love just like the one in her novels and movies. But sometimes, people are not so conventional.
Both Anya and Yor, don't feel comfortable being pigeonholed into “girls waiting to be passively rescued”, because within themselves the love for the people around them is a drive to be strong, take action and save others.
I feel that one of Endo's best points, is her way of undertaking a concept of what femininity, or rather, “feminine energy”, represents. Feminine energy is a force that comes from feelings, it is fluctuating and unpredictable, sometimes like a gentle breeze and sometimes like a terrible hurricane.
Most of Endo's female characters are strong, independent women who do not need to be rescued. And they are very willing to put themselves in the face of danger to protect those they love. This is something we have seen, with characters like Yor, Sylvia, Martha, Fiona, and they have been able to save other men or take on subjects much larger and more muscular than them.
Even with girls like Anya who we know very well is a very brave girl and has been in the face of danger despite her age (maybe too much, our poor baby is only 4 to 5 years old, God), and has the strength to send a bully flying (and fall in love in the process) on the first day of school.
So …. if women are strong …. men are weak?
Absolutely not!
Everyone, regardless of gender, is strong. We know perfectly well that Twilight is someone capable of taking care of himself, is someone who is physically trained and has enormous intelligence. Even Yuri has survived so many dangers that we wonder how the hell he didn't die. Damian is a brave guy (when he doesn't see an insect lol).
The point is, even though women and men (or any gender in general) are strong. We all have our weaknesses, our sensitive sides.
You can do things on your own, but you don't have to do everything at once....
Clearly, although Yor is physically strong, she has problems with metal and verbal confrontations. Because her insecurities are so great that when they make her doubt herself and her own value, she tends to lose it and that is when Loid is there for her, not to take care of her because she is weak, but to remind her of her own value (because she doesn't seem to realize it herself) and to make her see that she is worthy of the understanding and love of others. In the same way that Yor reminds him that he too can be a little weak and take refuge in her.
Even if we feel weak and awkward, we can take initiative....
I think it is very important, the idea that Yor or anyone in general can have the “initiative” to seek on their own that “love” that you so desire.
Many times we feel that if we don't fit into the expected canon, or social archetype we are not worthy of love. (Feminine women who feel vulnerable and who depend on the guy to live are the ones who get love in the end). When nothing could be further from the truth….
Being weak and vulnerable is something totally natural and not exclusive to one gender or social role. We are all weak and strong at the core, and we need each other to complement each other and to be able to enjoy much more of our own love and the love we can give and receive from others.
Yor's desire to actively seek love (kissing her husband a lot) is not only a way to develop her bond with Loid, but a way to grow her self-esteem and challenge her insecurities. To stop seeing herself as a child in front of the world, but a woman who can get things because she wants them (and has her husband's consent, of course) (But, come on, we all know Loid needs kisses from Yor).
#Anyway...yor go home and kiss your husband#Endo is just messing with our minds because he knows we can't deal with Yor kissing Loid#spy#twiyor#spy x family#yor forger#loid forger#loid x yor#yor briar#anya forger#twilight#becky blackbell#sxf#sxf fanart#spyxfamily
First, I want to say thank you for all you do to keep the So Weird fandom alive. I know many of us are silent fans because, though we love the show, it's difficult to find much new to say at this point. Second, I know that a So Weird revival is unlikely (which is a shame, because I genuinely think it could be really good, unlike so many of the revivals that have already been done), but I was wondering if you had any plot ideas of your own for a potential revival. Just for fun of course.
Maybe you had no idea when you wrote this, but you sent this at the perfect time. I was dealing with some drama behind the scenes (nothing serious and it's over now) that made me wonder if I take So Weird too seriously and should ease up on the effort to keep up with it all. Then I logged in to find your message and it was validating - a reassurance, if you will. So thank you, too.
As far as my own plot ideas… I'm not sure if you meant for one-off episodes or one that's part of the bigger plot, so I'll answer both.
(Putting it beneath the cut because this is going to be long.)
I once read about ghosts in the aftermath of natural disasters (think the New Orleans hurricane and Japanese tsunami). The ghosts (previously living people) don't know they're dead but are able to flag down taxis. Drivers would accept them but once at the destination no one was in the car anymore to pay the tab. Other instances include riders saying street names and towns that no longer existed or had been abandoned after evacuation. Cab companies reportedly stay out of certain areas because of this, and it would make a great So Weird episode.
I would love for Fi to meet a group of witches around her age who practice witchcraft. Fi spends so much time with her brother and "shared" friends and the one time we saw Candy it was mostly about Rick. I want Fi to experience some sisterhood bonding with people who get her. But if Disney wanted to do a Hocus Pocus crossover that could work too.
Other episode ideas - the boys go to a haunted house that is actually haunted, a retelling of The Monkey's Paw, spotting the loch ness monster, a Disney-friendly version of saying "Candyman" or "Bloody Mary", Molly is a guest performer on a historical ship as paranormal happenings ensue.
In terms of the bigger plot, I'd love a two-part episode where Molly and the gang go to Europe. It would be a special event like a lifetime achievement award for Papa Bear or a PKB Hall of Fame induction.
While exploring the area Fi discovers fairies who "know" she's met a will o' the wisp. (Not sure how this would be, maybe how the banshee acted toward her?) It's a parallel to Jack following Bricriu, but this time she's lead to a leprechaun.
Her ring keeps him at a distance, almost as a protection barrier, and he wants nothing to do with Fi until she makes a comment about a gold award her family/family friend is getting. He's intrigued, and after looking at her closer, mistakes her for another Fiona, even remarks they haven't seen each other in ages.
Fi says something like, "Fiona's my great-grandmother" (yes, another parallel) and the fella runs off, reappears, and runs off again as she tries to question it. Exasperated, Fi says something to the extent of, "You remind me of someone too." And his response is a serious, "Yes, but you knew that didn't you?"
And this baffles Fi to no end - the realization that her great-grandma knew what was going to happen? Was the other Fiona destined to save the world, too? Did she fail and that's why it's on Fi now? And if she doesn't complete it then future generations in her bloodline will have to try? Who knows!
All through this Jack can't enjoy the trip. Poor guy's having massive headaches (like the people in Memory because this special is full of callbacks) cause he's living his current life in the location that overlaps with his past life as a knight. Dude keeps dreaming of the Strangeling events he experienced with Fi and also of an older lady named Fiona who he would recognize if he wasn't in so much pain.
None of this has been researched so the mythology might be off, but that's what I came up with to your question and hopefully it was fun to read. Thank you for writing!
2x09 – Hurricane Monica thoughts
Welcome back Monica… I guess? I was as baffled as Fiona when I saw her in the kitchen. Where’d she come from? How did Frank even know where she was?! I’m assuming he found her because while he hated his mother, she was his mother, and he wanted something familiar in his grief. Monica is familiar and a good distraction for him.
We did get an answer as to her behaviour though. She’s bipolar. I’m not overly familiar with bipolar beyond the basics, but I do know enough to know it would explain how she can be so erratic. Especially if she refuses to take medication.
Monica being around was definitely interesting! Firstly, she’s actually got some influence over Frank, which is almost unheard of. Others have certainly tried but never with as much success. I mean, she actually slapped him when he went for Ian again. Compared to how he was with Fiona when that happened in season 1? Worlds of difference.
Fiona isn’t wrong in having reservations at having her around, and her attempts to get rid of her (including going to see Bob!) were fun but were never going to work. I wonder how many times she’s had Monica walk back in, play happy families, only to then leave again?
I did Monica making an effort with the kids though, including Fiona. I am fully expecting it to blow up but I’m going to enjoy her while she’s around. She brings out such a different side to everyone.
Elsewhere, just when I think Karen can’t sink lower, she does! She’s now scamming other helpless jerks out of cash. How many guys has she been with to pull this scam and get cash?
Lip is really learning a life this season. He’s got a very bleak future ahead of him if he doesn’t actually listen to people and go back to school. I’m not sure how I feel about him teaming up with Steve. He was arrested last season for doing him a favour and driving around in a stolen car.
Sheila shocked me this ep! She hooked up with Jody? Huh?! And Karen’s onto it so that’s just… yeah. Karen is not nice. I’m curious what she’s thinking of the situation. She obviously doesn’t like Jody. I don’t think she even really likes her mother all that much beyond what she can do for her, so I guess I’ll have to wait and see!
My favourite moment, came right at the end of this ep. Terry storming in claiming Ian got Mandy pregnant! Now, I know it’s not Ian’s but Frank’s “atta boy!” was just brilliantly delivered! And Monica tackling Terry, while Frank just dives for cover? It was just golden! That will probably remain one of my favourite scenes of the series, Monica taking on Terry and subduing him! Don’t mess with this woman and her kids when she’s around.
“After Storm in the Fen”, 2024, Oil on canvas
"Squall Lines", 2024, Oil on canvas
For Rachel MacFarlane’s exhibition, Coming Events Cast Their Light Before Them, at Hollis Taggart, she has painted several dreamlike landscapes based on her travels to places impacted by climate events. She first creates maquettes from her observations (three are on view) and then uses them as the basis for the paintings.
From the press release-
At its core, MacFarlane’s work is about lamenting the loss of specific landscapes through creating and depicting new worlds where humans are no longer the protagonists. MacFarlane spends much of her time immersed in unique geographical environments – often ones that have been heavily impacted by climate change-related weather events. While working on her newest body of work, MacFarlane spent extensive time in places ranging from the Adirondacks to Wolfe’s Neck Woods State Park in Maine, and from Prince Edward Island right after it had been hit by Hurricane Fiona to Clearwater, Manitoba during unprecedented flooding. As has always been her practice, MacFarlane does not document while she travels, instead preferring to absorb the atmosphere of a place and spend time really immersed in its sights and sounds. Upon returning to her studio, MacFarlane transforms her observations into three-dimensional maquettes created out of paper, paint, and plastic.
As MacFarlane describes it, a lot of play takes place at her collage table, as she manufactures new spaces based loosely on the spirit of specific ones, drawing on a myriad of influences from theatre and architecture to the world-building of science fiction literature and movies. The paintings in this show were specifically influenced by MacFarlane’s research into the Augsburg Book of Miracles, a manuscript depicting celestial and weather phenomena made in Augsburg, Germany in the sixteenth century. MacFarlane was moved and inspired by how these anonymous illustrators centuries before her were also dedicated to tracking warning signs in the landscape and to recording them in creative ways.
While she describes the model-building as a distancing method, it is also one that creates intimacy, as the scale shift to a shallow box model leads to the creation of a miniature world we can literally hold in our hands versus the enormity of the environment. After MacFarlane distills the memory of a place into an object, she further transforms it into its final form on the canvas, using bold colors and thick brushwork that highlights the painterliness and artifice of her landscapes. As art critic Barry Schwabsky notes in the catalogue essay, these multiple translations and transformations allow MacFarlane to “operate with and against flatness and depth, illusion and physicality, naturalness and theatricality… Her work gives pleasure but also warns that with all these unavoidable antitheses, the choice of one pole or the other would be hopeless, and we have to learn to live with the tensions between them.”
This exhibition closes 5/25/24.
Ashes, Ashes, We All Fall Down
[Day six prompt for Woevember, created by @asouefanworkevent]
(In Which A Submarine Captain Has a Reason to Visit Ruins)
“I still don’t understand why we’re here, Stepfather,” said Fiona. She took her gaze away from the ruined library, and up to the former grand stair cases. Carefully, Fiona placed her hand onto a burnt wooden railing. “And so late at night. Didn’t Jacques Snicket investigate the ruins?”
The two stair cases are still strong and structured; Snicket’s report noted how they were still sturdy to step on. But walking up them is dangerous to those who are inexperience in ruins. Widdershins placed his cold hands into his coat pockets, and walked towards the stairs.
“Aye. But there’s something Snicket forgot to search for in his investigation,” said Widdershins. “Something that escaped his mind entirely. Not that I can blame him, aye. He has so much on his mind as of now. The same goes to Kit Snicket. Aye, I can’t blame them at all…”
To think that Jacques and Kit forgotten about it! Especially Kit! Just because it’s small and fits in the palm of one’s hand, it’s of no importance and forgettable!
Or…maybe it is of unimportance and forgettable. Widdershins was never a close associate to Beatrice. Or Bertrand. Or even R, Duchess of Winnipeg. He could be wrong with how they truly felt about it the entire time. Especially R; Widdershins knew from Kit how R felt the ring was a heavy burden to wear, especially on the finger. But he who hesitates is lost. Aye, it’s better to find it and return it. Or at least try to find it. Who knows if it survived the fire.
“Stepfather?” asked Fiona. “Where are you going?”
“Upstairs,” continued Widdershins, carefully placing his foot on the first step. “Fiona, if you see anyone suspicious, hide the best you can. Aye, hide or run for your life. Either will do.”
(In Which An Unknown Swimming Woman's Identity Is Known)
“It is truly necessary for us to leave with you?” asked Widdershins, hesitantly. He curled one end of his odd mustache. “I know that it shouldn’t fall into the wrong hands, but—”
“Widdershins,” interrupted R, “you and I know that the Baudelaires are almost full-fledge volunteers. By organization standards —current standards— their training is complete. And in regards to Fiona…”
R played with her ponytail. She reminded herself to not speak to Widdershins as one parent to another. She had to speak to Widdershins as a Volunteer. She can’t let her desire to find Ramona —God, R desperately hope that Ramona was still alive and with the Snow Scouts— have her say the wrong thing to Widdershins.
“With Monty’s death, Fiona has been an involuntary volunteer for quite some time now. And you and I know that it’s time for her to truly volunteer. By assisting me in this mission, you’re allowing Fiona to take the first step of her journey towards it.”
Widdershins stopped curling his mustache. He reached into his pocket —R forgot those suits have pockets— and frowned as he pulled out his spyglass. Was he looking for something else?
Widdershins gripped the spyglass tightly, and then turned to Phil.
“Phil, there’s a change of plans,” said Widdershins. “Get the balloons nonetheless.”
“Yes, captain.” Phil scurried off to who knows where for the balloons.
With Phil going elsewhere, Widdershins gave his attention back to R. Widdershins placed his spyglass back into his pocket. The frown was still on his face.
“Widdershins,” asked R. “What’s the matter?”
“…Many things. The current matter at hand I want to discuss is regarding one of your belongings. But I forgotten I lost it in Hurricane Herman until I reached into my pocket.”
“Widdershins, the fire destroyed all of my belongings. I lost my furniture, my father’s cigar box, my snacks, the non-fireproof drapes, the Winnipeg jewelry like the earrings and the necklace and…” R trailed off. “You went to the Baudelaire Mansion ruins, did you?”
“Aye. The ring survived the Baudelaire Fire. Second floor, in the remains of Beatrice and Bertrand’s bedroom. My plan was to return one of your belongings back, and now—”
“Oh, Widdershins,” interrupted R. “I understand what you were trying to do. And I appreciate it. I do. But…” R sighed. “You and I know that ring hasn’t belong to me in a long time.”
(In Which An Old Man Wonders, And Perhaps You Should Too)
On first glance, the abstract markings on the ring’s band are just that. Abstract markings. But upon closer inspection, the markings are two Rs; one faces forward while one faces backward.
The ring’s gem is a deep violet color. Or purple; the two colors are one and the same. The gem is an amethyst. Or so he thinks. He’s not that knowledgeable when it comes to gems.
Such a beautiful ring shouldn’t be on such golden sands. But it is.
Ishmael picks it up, and holds it in the palm of his hand. While small, the ring is heavy.
Ishmael knows the history behind the golden ring, the violet or purple amethyst. He knows the family that it belongs too. He knows how the ring went through many owners, before being owned by a woman who never wears it, who prefer to keep it hidden from the world.
It was a ring that Ishmael thought was destroyed in the fire. But it didn’t.
Many questions run through Ishmael’s mind. But they are questions he can only speculate the answers, and not know for fact.
Ishmael slips the ring into his robe’s pocket.
It’s best to turn in for the night.
