Platonic Hanahaki AU: Natsume is cursed by a youkai to cough up flowers. He's told that the curse is caused by one-sided love, and so he resigns himself to slowly and painfully succumbing to a disease he can't explain to the humans around him.

In actuality, the curse is being worsened by Natsume's inability to see how deeply the people around him love him. The sicker he gets, the more his friends and family (both human and youkai) come out to show him just how much they care :')

thinking about human nature/the family of blood as an overarching metaphor for the intrinsic connection between the conservative nuclear family structure and racism. it definitely wasn’t intentional but the more i think about it… yeah it was right on a message level that they went back to the edwardian era and the events were set specifically in the pre ww1 period. the prejudice and discrimination martha suffers is juxtaposed with the so-called carefree life in the oft-idealised, oft-romanticised ‘golden age’ of the english village that john smith gets to experience. it works. im pivoting on my perception of this story tbh. it should be read as social horror, a parable about the way (white, male) privilege literally erases a person’s compassion and free-thinking tendencies (their humanity) in favour of conformity (what does a chameleon do? it blends in). and it works!!

Okay, but consider this - during her trip up and down the Doctor’s timeline in preparation for her big birthday surprise, Missy accidentally lands in 1913, where she runs into a certain John Smith. Can you imagine the jokes at John’s expense, like his stereotypical name? How relatively okay he is with children being trained as soldiers? Maybe Missy even asks what John wants for his birthday so she can have advice for what to get her best friend? Meanwhile John Smith is baffled at what a random woman is doing on the school grounds and why she’s winking and talking like she knows him until suddenly a strange look comes across her face and she whispers to herself “oh, it’s not a deep undercover thing, it’s a Chameleon circuit…” then she smiles at him sadly and waves goodbye, with her only excuse being “I really shouldn’t interfere…”

Synopsis

In England in 1913, school teacher John Smith experiences amazing dreams of living an incredible life as a mysterious adventurer called "the Doctor", fighting monsters and seeing far away worlds.

Martha goes through the worst time and deserves more praise for her phenomenal devotion in this episode, David Tennant shows off some amazing acting skills with the John Smith/Doctor switch. Plus we get to see him fall in love. Also, the video they sped up in the TARDIS with his instructions is hilarious. (nikMONSTER)

The End of the World

Synopsis

The Ninth Doctor takes his new companion, Rose Tyler, to the year 5,000,000,000 to see the sun expand and destroy the Earth.
