Just rewatched Torchwood season 2 because I wanted to show the serie to my friends. Well even though I was prepared for it, Toshiko and Owen's death really hurt as much as the first time.
10 minutes later no one is speaking and I'm sure my face is still wet from my tears !

i love how doctor who episodes are all "we had this scifi idea that also fits the philosophical themes of the show so we combined them in a way that fits the overarching plot of the season" and torchwood episodes are "yeah my buddy joe really wanted to make something that has fairies in it so i just gave him full control over everything for an episode while i went on vacation"

We should have had 16 seasons of Torchwood like fcking supernatural could you imagine the drama like it wouldn't be good but that's beside the point

Lol my old wording wasn't the most intelligible here so anyways--
If someone who is writing official Torchwood content is basing their characterizations on "A Day In the Death" (which implies they think ADITD is well written like I did at 16 and how find comically, criminally bad a decade later), then honestly they have no business writing Torchwood content.
ADITD was so badly written. It was meant to be a direct continuation from the previous episodes events instead of the usual standalone, but somehow manages to force every character involved into a complete 360掳 of their previous behavior, motivations, and characterization all in a desperate attempt to .... I don't even know. Not woobify, not romanticizing.... They're pretty much just worshipping the ground Owen walks on and making him....hm, the player character for lack of a better term surrounded by npcs, at the expense of every other character on set.
Dead Man Walking ends with Owen still a valued member of the team, with everyone being deeply impacted by his death and very concerned about him, and Owen is determined to save as many lives as he can with the time he has left by fulfilling his role as a Doctor
"Jack. People died because you brought me back. Well, we owe them, you and me. I'm still a doctor. Let's put me to work. See if we can't even that score. "
Is Owens last words in Dead Man Walking, with Jack Replying "We'll see."
Meanwhile, how does A Day In The Death open up, (in chronological order )????
With Jack doing this:
"Dr. Owen Harper. Torchwood Officer 545, I'm reliving you if your position." Jack intones, sitting at his desk all prim and proper.
"Bollocks. I'm sorry Jack, this is bollocks!" Owen exclaims, standing in front with Ianto behind him.
"Hand in your weapon and your security pass. " Jack continues robotically
"why? I'm fine!" Owen pleads
"Three days ago, you died. We need to examine you-- we need to find out what you are....... We need to be certain you're okay. " Jack says, staring at the wall, and then at his desk as he tacks on the last part.
"Yeah, it almost sounds as if you care, well done." Owen snarks
"Until I'm confident you're fit for duty, Martha Jones will replace you as Torchwood's new medical officer." Jack continues
"Shes doing alright out of all this, isn't she?" Owen asks
"Shes worked out a series of tests and examinations. " Jack says, standing up and walking around his desk
"What if I refuse?" Owen asks
"you'll be confined to the cells, the tests will be done, and if the results show that you're a danger to the team, appropriate steps will be taken." Jack says coldly.
Owen looks away.
Jack steps closer, into Owen's personal space. "I'm asking you, Owen. Please. Let us help. "
Owen fidgets uncomfortably as Jack speaks, unable to meet his gaze.
"let us make sure you're safe" Jack says.
Ianto speaks up- "I'm going to need your gun. " Owen and Ianto lock eyes and finally Owen disarms himself, passing over his gun. "And your security pass." He reminds, and Owen shoots him a glare.
"and how long are Dr. Jones tests going to take?" Owen finally asks testily
"as long as they need to." Jack says succinctly.
"what the hell am I supposed to do in the meantime?!" Owen demands.
Jack chuckles. "We always need someone to make coffee."
"oh no." Owen says.
*Cut to a scene of Ianto showing Owen how to use the coffee maker*
Anyways, it's absolutely hilarious seeing the dichotomy between the episodes even though ADITD is set 72 hours after DMW.
Also gotta love the episode trying to pit Owen and Martha against each other and framing Martha as replacing Owen, up to and including them all excluding him from team meetings for absolutely no reason, despite pretty much keeping him locked up in the hub.
Like.
Are you trying to tell me Owen wouldn't have been spending the last 72 hours (straight!) scanning himself with all the various alien medical tech they've scavenged over the years, taking samples of hair, toenails, skin samples, whatever blood or fluid sample he can manage, getting Martha to extract some cerebral spinal fluid, doing as many tests as you can possibly think of and more such as strength tests, measuring flexibility, testing reflexes.....
Doing nothing for 72 hours and then randomly getting fired so that Martha can be framed as an imposter is not good writing not does it make any sense for the characters in question.
It's also extremely hilarious that Jack randomly fires Owen, confines him to the Hub demoted to coffee boy, under threat of locking him in the cells, and then Jack also just lets Owen walk out of the Hub to go home alone without a care in the world, let alone any kind of surveillance for the hours until Tosh finally stops by to keep him company, and then when she called Jack in when Owen has his breakdown and ran out of the building.
Owen Harper is an asshole with a buried heart of gold and is a deeply flawed character, but he's flawed in a very particular way that this episode (and the audio) completely fails to grasp.
Anyways. Big Finish writers really need to start doing refresher courses on the original material as a whole instead of using the worst-written episode as far as characters (and plot lol, this whole thing is so hilariously contrived) go as the sole reference point for your shitty audio that sexualizes Tosh being coerced into sex with a guy they're investigating and is just a bunch of random body and psychological horror for no reason (and it made zero sense) other than to be as edgy and grim dark as possible.
A lot of the Torchwood audios I've listened to have been really good, well-written, with some very nice themes and character moments. And then the rest of them are absolute gross garbage because the writer only cares about being edgy and dark and sexualizing violence against women most of the time.
So. If you haven't listened to the Torchwood Big Finish special audio "Believe" yet, just be forewarned going in about the shit writing behind it and the content in it.
Always gotta "love" people who distinctly do not understand the characters they are writing... Are in charge of writing the audio drama...
Believe would be better if someone that actually understood Owen Harper as a character wrote it, as opposed to whoever saw A Day In The Death and thought it was well-written and in character as an adult lol.
