How would Morvok, Sniv, Ulaz, and Regris try to impress a reader they’re interested in? Would they talk about their exploits or do something they’re skilled at?

That is an interesting question. Here's how I believe they would go about impressing the woman of their dreams (aka all of you, the readers)

~ Ulaz ~

~ Honestly, Ulaz is the kind of person who would observe you first to make sure that you're interested in him before he tries to impress you

~ To him, romantic relationships should take time to develop in order for the romantic tension to build up, but once he's 1,000% positive that you have a crush on him he spends more time with you

~ Ulaz likes to show off his skills to you whenever you're around and he's always careful not to make any mistakes, the last thing he wants is to embarrass himself in front of you

~ If the castle is parked on some planet, Ulaz definitely goes out on a hunt so he can impress you with his hunting skills

~ He's also always there for you whether you need someone to talk to or hang out with, in order to show you that he's interested he's always present while he's around you

~ Ulaz also impresses you by learning about the things you love or are passionate about, that way he can do those things with you on a regular basis

~ Will definitely get a little shy and blushy if you do or say something, anything, that implies that you're very interested in him

~ Ulaz is a hopeless romantic and will impress you with various romantic gestures, but he won't love bomb you or come on too strong bc he doesn't want to overwhelm you

~ He's also affectionate with you, which works like a charm while he's trying to impress you

~ Another thing Ulaz does to impress you is fire dancing; he's never done it before, but with how flexible he is, he does it perfectly without setting himself or anything else on fire

~ He's also got regular dancing skills, which are extremely impressive

~ With time, he learns how to make you swoon for him and all of his methods work because it isn't long before he begins courting you

~ Regris ~

~ Regris is still a young adult, younger than Ulaz, and even though he's serious most of the time he can get a little awkward around you, his love interest

~ Regris doesn't know what to do or how to impress you, so he does several hours of research to see what humans liked and found attractive

~ He begins working on various tech projects specifically made for you; whether it's something to make your life easier or something akin to an mp3 player that holds thousands of songs with headphones, you can bet he'll make it

~ In order to really woo you, Regris tries writing a poem and giving you flowers

~ He's definitely not a poet, but his attempt to impress you definitely confirms your suspensions about him being romantically interested in you

~ Regris definitely tries to impress you with his fighting skills

~ Just to be clear, he might try fighting someone if it impresses you unless you don't want him to

~ He also likes to impress you with how sweet and cuddly he can be, but he also treats you well just as any future significant other should

~ Regris once tried to perform a traditional dance for you from his father's people, but even though he probably messed up a few steps he could tell that you were still impressed

~ The fact that he can use his tail to lift things is impressive enough, if the two of you are out shopping he uses it to carry some of the bags

~ Thankfully Regris eventually figures out how to impress you without being awkward about it and is successful in showing you that he's romantically interested in you

~ Morvok ~

~ Morvok knows that he's not the highest ranking commander in Zarkon's military, but he can be charming and to him, he thinks he's the best

~ The problem is that when he's around you he gets shy and blushy because he's never been around such a beautiful woman before

~ However, he makes it his mission to impress you after he catches one of the foot soldiers in his ranks flirting with you

~ Instead of fighting off a monster or bringing you the biggest kill he can find, Morvok impresses you with how charming he can be

~ He definitely brags about how many planets he's successfully conquered and how big his territory is, although he leaves out the part when he needed help conquering one planet in particular

~ Morvok also doesn't tell you about how the paladins defeated him, it's too embarrassing bc of the whole ‘Victory or Death’ thing

~ Because of his size, he's avoided most dangerous situations throughout his life, although Morvok knows how to play a few different instruments and he impresses you by showing off his mad musical skills

~ While he's around you, Morvok becomes a little more humble since he doesn't want to scare you away

~ Ultimately, whether you and Morvok end up together is up to you

~ He is cute and fun-sized tho, and he's huggable too

~ Sniv ~

~ One would think that Sniv would keep pestering you when he realizes that he's romantically interested in you, but he doesn't want you to resent him if he comes on too strong

~ However, he does get more lovey and affectionate

~ In order to impress you, Sniv proudly tells you of his exploits and how many planets he's conquered in order to snag a place at the main hub

~ He also brings fresh kills for you on a regular basis and he shows off his fighting skills

~ However, he understands that humans are different and he impresses you by also showing off his sensitive side and how much he truly cares about you as a person

~ Sniv learns about your interests, even the fandoms you're into so that you both can ‘fangirl’ together when one of your favorite artists/directors comes out with something new

~ Another thing he impresses you with are his dancing skills when Zarkon throws a royal ball for only his highest ranking commanders and their plus ones

~ He's funny, too, and knows how to tell hilarious jokes to make you laugh

~ Expect him to make the fur on his head look extra fluffy because he wants to impress you in every way imaginable

~ With how impressive and charming he is, Sniv easily manages to impress you

I think the funniest part of the zombie apocalypse AU is just. everyone chalking up literally everything weird about Keith to him being in this weird half-infected state. Sure, they've never seen a zombie with claws and fangs before, or yellow sclera for that matter, but like- he's already got something super weird going on with the whole... infected but not in his brain thing. It's not that weird that it might result in some... different expressions.

the strength? well, zombies can be pretty strong. the agility? there's some fast zombies. they're absolutely terrifying. the night vision and glowing eyes? actually that one's a little weird. but it falls underneath the same category as his claws and fangs.

Keith believes it too. He can't... quite explain why he can interact with Galra tech, but obviously the virus has altered his DNA in some fashion. Maybe it's just a false flag?

What he can't deny is the symbol on Ulaz's blade. And then he starts to wonder if maybe the reason he's so different from everyone else who was infected is because he's never been entirely human...

Basically a rundown of the plot I have planned so far! I will be writing and posting in order on AO3!

But there are some specific scenes I wanted to write because I don't have the patience or time to write everything in order(I'll be posting them here under the Hiraeth AU tag) THIS ENTIRE THING IS GEN BTW!!!

Hiraeth

(n.) a homesickness for a home to which you cannot return, a home which maybe never was; the nostalgia, the yearning, the grief for lost places of your past

• Allura from another reality goes quintessence crazy after defeating Haggar at the cost of the lives of the other Paladins

• She goes from universe to universe trying to gather enough quintessence to bring back her reality that she accidentally tore apart but only gets worse and worse the more quintessence she is exposed to

• In the current universe she experiments with quintessence and accidentally kills her parents along with Zarkon and Honerva. Villian!Allura turns the blame to the Galra, causing the Allura of this universe to wage war on them as the only successor to the Altean throne.

• Lotor tries to convince Allura that her other self is lying to her but she doesn't believe it, leaving Lotor to flee from the Galran commanders trying to kill him to gain the throne(he goes into hiding before organizing a resistance after meeting the other generals)

• Villian!Allura is concerned that the Paladins of this universe will try to stop her so she destroys Earth

• However prior to the Altean invasion the Kerberos mission took place with Sam and his crew consisting of Matt, Adam and Shiro(who are all 16/17 for plot reasons they were interns or something IT MAKES SENSE DON'T WORRY ABOUT IT!!!)

• Sam, Matt and Shiro are kidnapped and sent to the arenas while Adam manages to steal a ship to get back to Earth, only to find it destroyed

• The Galran Empire remnants (who were already planning on attacking Earth and communicating with Sanda(who sent Sam away on Kerberos because she thought he would get in the way of her failed "negotiations" and hoped he was kidnapped) fight with the Alteans, leaving Earth in the crossfire

• The Blade of Marmora attempt a relief effort and get one billion people off Earth before it explodes, finding Adam and establishing a planet they can live on before leaving them to their own devices

• In this AU all the Paladins are kids when Earth got destroyed (around 6 to 8) and Keith's dad dies during the evacuation helping defend the transports from Alteans but Kolivan saw that Keith's dad had a Marmoran knife(that he didn't give to Keith at 8 years old)

• Kolivan takes in Keith as a Blade agent since he has no human to provide for him but he keeps his identity as a human secret from the rest of the Blades to ensure none of them snitch since the Alteans have offered a lot for humans

• Kolivan knows the knife was Krolia's but doesn't tell her since she already jeopardized the Blade of Marmora once by leaving for Earth and without the temptation of her son she won't leave again

• Keith(as you can expect) did not have a very happy childhood growing up in an organization of trained killer assassin ninjas which resulted in more ~trauma~

• On one of his missions he is captured by Galra and put in the areans with Champion!Shiro and Keith meets another human for the first time who shows him kindness and starts to question if the Blades are right

• Keith escapes from the Arena with the Blades but convinces Ulaz to go back for Shiro and he meets up with Adam in the human colony

• On another mission Keith runs into Lance, Hunk and Pidge who are searching for a supposed superweapon in an attempt to defend themselves from Alteans and Galrans that prevent them from leaving their hiding spot at the edge of the universe

• he thinks to himself "wow these guys are annoying and weird I sure do hope I never see them again" before the Blades immediately order him to find the superweapon to keep it out of human, Altean and Galran hands because they are unreliable

• Krolia helps track down information it and Keith notices that whenever she is bored she recites star charts (kinda like his dad used to do) and the constellations look eerily familar

• Keith gets hurt, Krolia finds out his identity and takes him to the human colony so he doesn't have to stay in the abusive Blade environment anymore

• When she tries to get Keith to colony they are tracked by Alteans and Krolia manages to trick the Alteans and Keith crash lands on the surface only to see the ship leaving

• now that all the paladins are in one place they protect the colony after going on a couple of missions to find the lions while Keith tries to track down the very elusive Blade of Marmora

Theres more to it than that, BUT that's all for now!

Summary:“Sorry,” Keith sighed, pushing his hair away from his sweaty forehead. “I woke up feeling sick this morning, and I thought I could power through it, but I guess it got worse.” The Blades exchanged confused looks. “Sick?” “Yeah. Sick, you know, ill. Unwell. The opposite of a healthy state.” Keith looked around at all of them, taking in their puzzled looks. “When there’s, like, a foreign virus or bacteria that gets into the body and attacks the immune system, and the body has to fight it off.” Confused and awed murmuring broke out among the Blades, who wondered aloud if this was true. “This has been known to happen to certain species of aliens.” Ulaz said slowly. “But Galra do not ‘get sick’.” “Well, humans do.” Keith said. “Guess I didn’t inherit a Galra immune system.” He broke off to cough a few times into the crook of his arm. (After Keith collapses in the middle of sparring, the Blades learn that humans can get sick and what that means. Taking care of their sick youngest member brings out some of the Blades' protective sides.)

My thoughts: Cute! Cute cute cute. Poor Keith is unwell, but there are snuggles and its cute. This is the first Keith centric thing I've recced I think lol.

Shiro, Matt, and their friends were given a mission by Sanda, a secret mission. The mission was to get close with the natives of the planet. Close enough where they'll do anything that the group asks. They all found the mission odd so they went to someone else, Sam. Sam gave them a new mission that would work for them all. Learn about the planet and the natives. However it wouldn't be easy because Kuron, Shiro's twin, was taking over their old mission. This causes trouble for Shiro, Matt, and their friends.

This AU will be vastly different from the first movie. I might make a fanfic about the second one once I watch and when I finish this one.

First art of the new year. Ulaz, the ”demon” and Ulaz the man. This is just some fun idea of Galra as nether beings and a few just live on earth and masquerade as human. Ulaz would be a doctor and alchemist using his nether abilities for “uncanny miracle” treatment. In his human glamour he keeps his clan markings but disguises them as tattoos and vitiligo. Also makes his height not quite as intimidating. I dunno. Something fun to play with.

A small scoff sounded at the hopeful and gentle words uttered. He understands full well that his cooperation is required at this point in time, if only for his adjustment to the new circumstances he has found himself thrust into. However, seeing as said circumstances are wholly the fault of the Galra and their morally-loose druids, well… Is it any surprise he'd rather choke on the sensations assailing him at all times of the day and night than succumb to honeyed words from someone who was just as likely to turn around and inject him with something to make the change permanent.

He's being paranoid, he knows.

The change already is permanent, after all. He knows that, can feel it in every fibre of his being. He… is no longer human. Not that he had ever been before, admittedly, not really, but the sentiment is still there. He might not ever have been more than 50% human, but he had grown up there, with their values and morals and behaviours. He did not fit in here, did not want to fit in here.

After all, there was a difference between having his heritage naturally brought to the surface surrounded by friends and allies who would support him and reassure him that his physical changes meant nothing in the face of his personality and personal values, and having the change happen here, on a Galra ship surrounded by enemies and druids who were far too happy to simply grab him and inject him with various unknown substances.

It didn't burn anymore, but that was but a small mercy.

"Change me back." He snaps then, curling in on himself despite the desire to appear strong and threatening to the surprisingly meek medical officer. Or perhaps the other simply played meek in order to placate him. It's true enough that he wouldn't respond well to someone like a druid, or worse, Sendak or Haxus. Frankly he doesn't want to find out the kinds of reactions he'd have around them now. Everything is sharper, more focussed, overwhelming… Most importantly, he'd become impulsive. The years of training careful control of his reactions all shot to hell and leaving him reacting instinctively to the slightest of perceptions.

Even now his ears were twitching, an uncomfortable and distracting sensation that only set him more on edge, and it was a tell besides. He hates it.

The demand is pointless anyway, and they both know it. Just as Ulaz should know that the odds of Keith learning to trust him were below zero. Yet the other persisted, gently but firmly, and he feels the exhaustion creeping up on him, gradual but inescapable. it's too much still, he can't stay awake for very long yet because of the overwhelm of all the new sensations he still needs to get used to before he can return to any semblance of normal.

"Just—" He sighs, a sound mired half in frustration and half in a bone deep tiredness that reaches beyond physicality. "Just get me somewhere safe. Warm, quiet… I need to rest."

Oh buddy I have so many. I've gotten better over the years at curbing my enthusiasm, but I'm like a popcorn maker of ideas. I start slow as I get into something, and then they're firing out of me at an unstoppable rate, and then as I wean out of a media they slow down. This results in everythng from good to bad to hilarious to great ideas.

Lots of them I try to incorporate into stuff I'm already writing (like a throwaway line, or a small scene as a personal nod to a concept I liked) just to get it out of my system.

Back in 2010 I had a post s5 finale fix-it story where Sam had returned from The Cage as a sum of Lucifer and Sam, who was a little brother and wanted big brothers' love. And so brought John and Mary back to life while lurking around watching Dean like the worlds' creepiest stalker. This would be from Dean's pov as he navigated suddenly having his parents back, as they tried to figure out who brought them back, and the three of them trying to be a family. A sub-plot would be that Mary and John wouldn't approve of Cas, because he's Not Human, and so Dean would be sneaking around to see his bff and somewhere along the way it turns into Dean sneaking around with his boyfriend and trying to figure out how to admit to his parents that he's queer.

Culture clash where Ulaz wants to perform a sacred Galra soulmate ritual on Shiro to make Shiro spiritually Galran so they will go to the same afterlife when they die, and all the pushback he gets for that. Including that the afterlife isn't very important to Shiro.

A pre-dating Keith is Posessive of Shiro story (it's for laughs at Keith's expense. He gets it from his mom)

A whole future story where Rahjim gets assassinated by the Galra which kickstarts a whole rebellion uprising that turns the tide in the Galra war. A few months down the line it turns out Rahjim is still alive, lost an arm, and has decided to stay "dead" to be a martyr for the cause. He's living his fantasy of being a wartime pilot/fighter but he also hates not having money or power and he and Shiro eventually reconnect and it's an interesting new dynamic

~ Sendak ~

~ Galra generally don't have as many illnesses and conditions as humans do because it's basically bred out of them as a species, so when Sendak learns that you have a condition that causes chronic pain and fatigue he tries his best to make you as comfortable as possible

~ He researches your condition so he can better understand it without making you uncomfortable, although he listens to you so he can understand what you're going through from your point of view

~ He doesn't view you as weak because it's not your fault that you have your condition, but you're the only person he makes accommodations for

~ Based on what you've told him that you need extra sleep Sendak makes the bed even more comfortable when you need a nap

~ He also helps you practice relaxation techniques and simple physical exercise

~ Support groups aren't really a thing in the galra empire, although if you have mood swings or anxiety he schedules a talk therapy session with one of the best therapists in the empire via video chat

~ Sendak likes taking naps with you from time to time, at his age and with how busy he is he needs it

~ For your tender and sore muscles Sendak delicately rubs pain relief ointment on your skin where you're sore, he doesn't like seeing you in pain

~ If your periods are affected by your condition Sendak gives you a little extra painkiller so that your cramps aren't too bad and he keeps the right period products stocked in the bathroom as well

~ He eventually commissions Haggar to make a cure for you so that you don't have to deal with your condition for the rest of your life; it can be done because she knows ancient altean healing magic

~ Modern galra technology and medicine also gives her an advantage, it just takes her a little while to make a cure for you

~ Kolivan ~

~ Shortly after Kolivan started courting you he noticed how there was something different about you; he never noticed it much before, but you seem tired and in pain more than the paladins

~ Before he could ask you about it you confessed that you have a condition that makes you experience chronic pain and fatigue, as well as a few other unpleasant symptoms

~ Kolivan isn't familiar with human conditions and illnesses, although he does everything he can to make you comfortable

~ You agree to move in with him so he can take care of you easier after he asks you

~ He asks Ulaz if he can make a cure for you because he doesn't want you to keep suffering from your condition

~ Ulaz can definitely make something, but it'll take a while because some of the things he needs are rare and hard to find

~ Until then he lets you rest as much as you need to, he even made the bed more comfy for you

~ You appreciate that Kolivan's willing to take the time out of his schedule in order to take care of you

~ He listens to you when you need someone to talk to and he helps you with simple exercises

~ If you need someone else to talk to you talk to the on-site therapist

~ Doing yoga with him every couple of days helps you to relax

~ Ulaz keeps muscle relaxant ointment in stock for you, it's effective in making your chronic pain less painful

~ There isn't much anyone can do for your chronic fatigue until your cure is ready

~ You take plenty of naps, though

~ If you need a massage then he gives you a massage if he's not too busy

~ You couldn't have asked for a better significant other, until your cure is ready Kolivan takes care of you in every way imaginable

today I am thinking about him... druid Keith.

thinking about the way he doesn't even really have his own name until he's finally reunited with Krolia. He was always just a tool for Haggar, someone that she and the druids only raised because of his magical potential. how the closest thing he had to a name was just the word for scrap- because what else would he be, when even his own parents threw him out?

(they didn't, but he has no way of knowing this.)

thinking about how he's raised in the heart of the Galra Empire, under Haggar's direct control. How he's taught everything he knows about the universe from her, about how the Galra Empire is unquestionably the true ruling force of the universe because might makes right. about how he slowly starts to question this as they develop the komar... and as three aliens that look so much like his non-Galra half are brought in. about how the odd technician named Ulaz challenges so many of his beliefs, makes him think about things in a way he never has before.

about how he talks to Shiro in secret, curious about the human. about how Shiro is wary of him at first, seeing as he's a druid, but slowly realizes that the person behind the mask is a child who has never known anything but this. about how he catches Shiro in his escapes, and offers to help. about how the first time Shiro sees his face and realizes he has human blood is the first time Keith steps foot on Earth.

also thinking about how he doesn't connect with the red lion right away. He helps the paladins secure it from Sendak's ship, but as far as they know, it doesn't have a paladin. about how he's not ready to be a paladin yet, and won't be for sometime. about how he slowly has to unlearn everything he learned in the Empire, and maybe along the way, also learn that he deserves to be loved and cared for.

about how he and Allura slowly warm up to each other, talking about magic. about how awed he is when she restores the entire Balmera, and about the awful way it makes him feel about his own magic, twisted and corrupted just like every other druid. about how he tries to learn what Galran magic was like before the war, when things were different. about how he sheds his druid robes, piece by piece, and grows into the person he was always meant to be.

{{ Currently in the chokehold of the idea that Arin voluntarily hides the fact that she’s human from the paladins for as long as possible, and especially from Keith during his time with the Blades.  Most Blades we see hide their faces 99% of the time anyway, Keith, Krolia, Kolivan and Ulaz really being the only faces we really see (that I can remember atm), so her face being obscured whenever they have meetings or joint training/missions isn’t a shock.  Some of the paladins have their suspicions cause she’s.... tiny, for a Galra.  The only reason they find out is during a joint mission where a good blow to the head causes her helmet to short circuit and reveal her very human face.  Confusion and angst ensue, Arin is honestly kinda terrified.  She’s not really ready to identify as an actual human again, which is why her identity stays hidden.  Makes her face a lot of feelings. }}

A list of Shiro’s scars & where he got them from ( for my own reference because I’m always forgetting what my headcanons are akdjfhg. )

The suture scars from the Galra taking his arm ~ I headcanon that the decision to take his arm came from Haggar, who sat in on a trial and recognised that Shiro would be all kinds of helpful in the future to her ( perhaps she had a vision of the five human paladins and how convenient it would be to have a spy among the ranks. Then again, Ulaz also recognised something in Shiro, so perhaps it was nothing more than his defiance in the arena that he became the chosen ). I imagine this is about 7 months into Shiro’s imprisonment, also 7 months without any medication. There are signs of contractures in his right hand fingers, something that has become noticeable when he stops using his right hand during battles. Haggar’s solution is amputation, which also gives her enough flesh and DNA to start the cloning process, and rewards Shiro with a weaponised prosthetic for his trouble, which, of course, plays into her own plan because she needs Shiro to be an even more formidable force than he already is. Because these are surgical scars and Ulaz was the surgeon, I imagine the surgery minimised unnecessary scarring ( so Shiro doesn’t have the roguish scarring some fanworks depict !! ) 

The most obvious one is the scar across the bridge of his nose. I originally headcanoned this as a battle wound, much like his others, but it’s a perfectly symmetrical wound, which seems unlikely in the heat of battle especially across his face. Once Haggar had his DNA for cloning, she also needed his mind. She doesn’t ( at this point ) have Allura’s abilities to transfer ~essence~ between vessels, so would’ve had to use good ole fashioned tech. I imagine something similar that was used on my boy Bucky Barnes for brainwashing, was used on Shiro to extract not just his memories, but the very essence of himself, allowing a complete duplication of mind, body & soul. The majority of Haggar’s work is based around Quintessence so it makes sense that the tech she used on Shiro for mind-extraction would also use Quintessence, but humans are not compatible with this. Even Keith gets burned by it, but recovers, presumably due to his Galra lineage. Whatever singed Shiro across his nose, was the contraption Haggar used for mind-extraction. ( Prompted by this post. ) This mind-extraction process was also responsible for Shiro’s hair turning white at the front.

Shiro has Hangar’s claw marks on the right hand side just at his waist when Haggar attacks him during Allura’s rescue. The scar extends from his navel, wraps around his side to his spine, as the wound “grew”. The scar doesn’t fully heal in the Altean healing pod, but when he comes out it looks much older than it is.

A burn mark in the shape of a hand on his left upper thigh from where he ( read : Kuron ) cauterized an open wound after his “escape” from the Galra ( after the real Shiro died ). As a consequence of Shiro now living in his clone’s body, he also has all of Kuron’s injuries. As this was in the early phases of Operation Kuron Stage 3, Haggar’s interference was minimal so I think Kuron’s actions here mimck what Shiro would have done in the same situation. 

( The rest of this list are non-canon scars, and not a completely exhaustive list either, and all he got in the arena ) ( I may add more to the list above as I re-watch Voltron ~ these are the ones I know from memory only !!!! )

Mouth shaped bite (roughly 30 small triangular incisions of teeth ) on the fleshy part of his left shoulder, closer to his neck than the ball of his shoulder.

3 claw marks from the top of his right shoulder down to just under his right shoulder blade

1 deep gash scar on his chest from the inner left clavicle across his left pectoral (in an outward direction). 

A smaller gash scar intersects closer to his left side (received the smaller one later). 

Multiple scars on his abdomen and lower back ~ he couldn’t tell you when he got them or who gave them to him. He was in a constant state of healing between trials and injuries usually piled on top of each other. 

A different set of 4 claw marks on the back of his lower right thigh (not as deep as the set on his back). 

A chain shaped burn mark loops twice around his right calf from a kusarigama-like weapon of choice from one monster that also could pass electric current through it ( Shiro only survived this electrocution due to his cybernetic arm collecting the discharge ).

VLD AU - Dark Water

Another piece to the mermaid!Pidge AU, this one being mainly focused around Shiro.  At the end, there will be a picture, but it does not fully match up to the story; the two were started around the same time but put off; as the story showed things slightly different, the picture kept its original state and I didn’t want to alter either.  Anyway! Enjoy this 1600 word ficlet in the “keep reading” below.

“Last check over AARC!”

Takashi “Shiro” Shirogane opened his eyes. Water was filling into his little plane at an alarmingly quick and steady pace. Crap. Not good at all. He went for the belt keeping him in place, working at it with his left hand. His right arm had been caught in part of his plane, the impact it made with the ocean crushing in the side and pinning him.

Shit. Even worse. If he could get the buckle undone, which he was almost too panicked to do, how could he get out? He had to try and find a way to free himself. But his arm was caught and he didn’t even think he could twitch his fingers.

Fuck.

And the plane had filled up completely, barely giving the pilot time to take a deep breath to try and prolong his survival. In his state, he felt he had about three minutes to get out of there before he needed to breathe again… or ultimately end up giving in and letting the dart, salty waters overtake him. He had to be quick.

He was both thankful and concerned that the light was still working in his plane, illuminating the area around him. This let him see the buckle, which he thankfully got undone in about half a minute since holding his breath, as well as his pinned arm. The worst part of being able to see, though, was what was around him. He could hear something that he could explain as a deep, sonance, melodic and ominous at the same time. Was it a creature? Was it just ambiance? No. Shiro couldn’t focus on that; he had to escape, even if his arm was starting to hurt further up.

Shiro was losing his battle. He was struggling to keep his breath held as he pushed past his three minute mark. The lights remained, but he could hardly notice them anymore. It was hard seeing in the water to begin with, the its natural salinity levels made it even harder… but his condition, everything was blurring further.

And then he saw movement. It startled him, but he managed to not give up on his breath holding competition with Fate. The movement seemed to circle him. Quick? No. Massive. It came around again and he saw them illuminated by the lights of his aircraft. Large, round eyes, clearly meant to see in the darkness of the ocean. But this thing… it wasn’t just his off perspective, right? His possible delirious state of being in pain and on the verge of dying in a watery grave? He didn’t know… but he could have sworn this thing that pulled its hands up around his plane was a giant mermaid.

He reached out with his good hand, mentally praying that this creature was real and perhaps sought to be merciful. But it couldn’t be, right? If it was real, logic said it could eat him. But it couldn’t be real… either way, he would die in the end.

“Over here!” came a very familiar call. He opened his eyes, seeing through the bleariness the best he could. “I found him! He’s still breathing!” the figure called. He could make out some defining features. Something was familiar about this person. “He’s badly hurt!”

He coughed. Did he survive? What happened? How did…

“Shiro? Shiro, it’s okay, I know it hurts.” The figure looked to him. Yes, this person was definitely someone he knew. “Just try to stay awake. They’re on their way. Just stay awake.”

Shiro woke up. He didn’t realize he passed out. He looked around to see himself in a hospital room of sorts. Looking to see a recognizable, framed image, he realized he was at AARC, Atlean Aquatic Research Center. It must have been the closest place to take him for… whatever. He then looked to his side, someone holding his left hand. Keith. A good friend. He was like a little brother to the pilot. Keith had appeared to have fallen asleep there.

Smiling softly, Shiro didn’t want to disturb him. He left his hand in place, letting Keith continue to hold onto it. He then tried to move his right hand, feeling for a button to let the doctor know he was up and would like assistance. Nothing. Not that there wasn’t a button, he didn’t know. He couldn’t feel anything.

Shiro dared to look over to his right. Bandaged up was his shoulder, the arm that was supposed to be connected to it was gone. He looked up when he heard the muffled sound of soft shoes hit tile floor before entering his room. An albino with a Mohawk and intricate, dark tattoos entered. He had been to AARC enough times to know this as Ulaz, the resident doctor. Sure, he was mainly on site for veterinary purposes, but he trained to work with humans, too.

“Hey.” Shiro rasped out, realizing his throat was dry.

“Glad to know you’re awake.” Ulaz said, going to a small fridge in the room and pulling out a pitcher of water. He poured it into a cup and put in a straw before taking it over for Shiro to sip on.

“Thanks.” Shiro said after a few long sips. “Oh, that’s nice.”

“How do you feel?” Ulaz inquired, setting the cup on the bedside table. He brought up a chair and sat down.

“Surprisingly fine, groggy. Hungry.” Shiro admitted. “Must be the pain killers.”

“We had you properly dosed; you’ve been in and out of consciousness for a few days now.” Ulaz explained. “Do you recall what happened?”

“I… I don’t know.” Shiro sighed. “My plane went down… hell if I knew why...”

“Indeed it did; thankfully what could be found was brought back so it could be combed over and see if there were any malfunctions.” Ulaz stated. “You were found not far from it. How you and your plane got to shore, well, hopefully the team can figure it out.” He showed the tablet in his hand, a design for a prosthetic on the screen. “We’re already looking into a new arm for you; due to the damage and time frame, we could not have your original arm reattached.”

Shiro smiled. “Looks like I’ll still get an arm. And months of rehabilitation.” he nodded. “Has… anyone contacted Adam?”

“He flew out the first day to help with the search; he’s in another building helping with the examination of your plane; he’s certain it has nothing to do with pilot error as some have questioned.” he informed. “Kolivan is leading the investigation. Surprisingly there isn’t much missing.”

“You mentioned my arm… it was...”

“Found in the wreckage.” Ulaz nodded. “Shiro, oddly enough, it was removed almost cleanly. And not in a way the wreck should have removed it.”

Shiro closed his eyes, thinking of the crash, his arm pinned. “My arm… it was… it was being crushed in the plane. I couldn’t pull it free.” He did his best to recall the facts. “But something… there was something there. In the water.” He opened his eyes again. “Maybe I was hallucinating. I was in pain… losing oxygen in my lungs… scared.”

“Something?” Ulaz questioned. “What do you think?”

“It was giant… face like a human but not… I can’t tell… even the lights in my ship couldn’t penetrate the darkness that much, right?” Shiro asked. “I had prayed, though, that whatever it was, it would show mercy… but… like I said, I could have been hallucinating.”

“You could have. Or there really was something out there looking out for you.” Ulaz stated. “There are a number of mysteries out there and the ocean is often the most mysterious.”

“So something could be out there?” Shiro asked.

“It’s probable.” Ulaz nodded.

“Nng...” Keith lifted his head. “Huh? Shiro?” He looked over. “Shiro, you’re awake.”

“So are you.” Shiro slipped his hand free and ruffled Keith’s hair. “Hey, buddy.”

“Hey.” Keith smiled. “How you feelin’?”

“Hungry.” Shiro admitted.

“I’ll go fetch some food.” Keith perked up, ready to help.

“Maybe we can walk together to get food. If the doc permits.” Shiro looked to Ulaz.

“Take it easy, you’re still a bit groggy from the meds, but your legs are fine and work.” Ulaz chuckled. “If you need to, use a wheel chair. Your arm should be ready in less than a week, then onto rehabilitation.”

“Hey, as long as I can fly again, one or two arms, I’m good.”

“You crashed and you still wanna fly? Adam’s gonna give you an earful.” Keith sighed, shaking his head. He got up and helped Shiro to his feet, the older man a bit wobbly at first, but soon able to hold his own. “You okay?”

“Just gotta take it slow and easy to start.” Shiro nodded. “But yeah, I’m fine.” He then walked out of the room, looking to see Lance seem to walk past. “Oh, Lance, good… afternoon?”

“Almost.” Lance confirmed. “Glad to see you feeling better and on your feet.” He then walked off.

“Well, he didn’t stay to chat long.” Shiro commented. “That’s odd.”

“Looks like he wants to get somewhere.” Keith admitted as he shrugged. “Anyway, let’s get you fed.” Shiro’s stomach audibly rumbled. “Yup, your stomach agrees.”

“Knowing him, probably to catch some waves.” Shiro chuckled, knowing Lance loved to surf. “My mind agrees with my stomach, food would be great.” He nodded and walked with Keith supporting him, Ulaz slowly moving behind them to keep an eye on the pilot.

Well! I hope you all enjoyed this one.  It was actually the first of the mermaid au stories to be written/started, but I didn’t finish it until last night; I almost forgot I had it started until I was going through unfinished doodles.
