Batfam: Dragon Riders

This was just a silly little idea I had. It's mostly just giving the Batfam (sans Barbara Gordon and Duke Thomas) dragons from HTTYD. If you want, imagine this as a crossover, with the HTTYD films as the past of the DCU, but minus all the dragons hiding out in the Hidden World. Anyway, since I don't have a plot but dragons and partners, I'll just get into it.

Up first is Jason Todd, with his female Skrill, Surge.

Then comes Dick Grayson and his male Sand Wraith, Duststorm or "Dusty" for short.

Cassandra Cain and her female Stormcutter, Silencer.

Tim Drake and his female Death Song, Melody.

Damian Wayne and his male Deathgripper, Sirocco.

And finally, Bruce Wayne with his female Flightmare, Banshee.

I am slowly rotatin a crossover idea. A Batman and Flight Rising crossover, but perhaps slightly httyd themed-ish. Because I am just weak to feral cryptid batfam, and I am also weak to dragon-rider batfam.

So there are dragon hunters, vikings, general people living on islands, by shore, etc. Less modern, more httyd-fantasy-esque. But there's also things like the mechanical golems and such that can be found in FR. So less technology, more magic and spellwork and runework. Which I mean, already exists in base DC anyway.

Now the batfam specifically, I adore and love the idea of batfam living with dragons almost Valka style with a hint more feral.

Now here is what I think each of their backgrounds and an idea for each dragon would be.

Alfred- He still raises Bruce after his parents death at their request, but also might have gotten carried off by dragons. Thankfully, they were not part of the local Queen's nest meaning he didn't get eaten. He's done his best to raise Bruce- and the children he keeps bringing back the the dragon Nest to not be completely feral.

Bruce- Like Alfred, he was carried away by dragons in the middle of a raid. Technically he was actually in Alfred's arms but y'know. He was about nine at that point and spent a large chunk of his childhood playing and wrestling with dragons. Will I be including dragonese in this? Good question. Despite Alfred's protests the moment he was old enough he started sneaking out of the Nest and both watching and gathering things from any nearby- or far away in some cases- human settlements. Eventually Alfred gives up and goes along with him to properly teach bartering and such- and Bruce ended up in a couple of apprenticeships, including a couple with blacksmiths. Which helps when he starts creating his own designs and ideas.

Dick- Bruce kind of just spirited him away after the death of his parents. They were part of a circus of sorts, that did different shows, including a dance of sorts on dragon-back, which they did. So Dick finds the dragons around the nest comforting, especially when he just arrives. He also, much like Bruce, starts sneaking out, despite Bruce's own attempts to stop him. Which is how the whole dragon-people (thanks to clothing and armor covered in dragon scales, alongside wing-capes and such) myth starts gaining traction.

Barbara- Now I feel like she's more of a Hiccup-figure, albeit well liked by the rest of her village, as her father is either chief or the captain of the guard. Her and Dick befriend each other during one of the 'civilian' outings, aka when Dick & Bruce weren't all cryptid. But it also, Dick does slip slightly and accidentally gives her the idea of dragon-training and taming. Her goal is to train a dragon and convince the rest of her village of it, and sometimes joins Bruce in dragon-trapper raiding thanks to Dick insisting,

Jason- This lil gremlin wasn't exactly trapping dragons, but he stole broken traps and other things and traded the scrap to anyone he could for food and other supplies. He also has a bit of a pickpocketing habit. Dick might have laughed when he got Bruce, which is how he kind of got caught. He was very wary at first, but already half feral and the weird dragon-people have food and oh my stars, Flying! He is still a child after all, and was very excited about that sort of prospect.

Tim- So can't exactly do the whole neighbor thing with him, seeing as the batfam lives in a dragon nest. That doesn't stop him from seeing them- and the dragon flocks- fly by from his window. His parents are merchants, and he's left alone a lot. Which directly plays into how he eventually runs into the batfam. Well, technically he runs into Jason first, though recognizes Dick from the Grayson show. Look, what was Jason supposed to do, there was a small child at the edge of a building that was on fire! And he recognizes Dick, so it's not like he can't take him, right?

Steph- Steph is easy. Tim ran into her while she was freeing dragons from her father's ship and honestly, he did not kidnap her. She, kidnapped herself. Honestly he doesn't know where the heck she even came from, she just climbed on one of the dragons without a care in the world, smoking mask and hood and all. She almost explodes herself more than once and has a lot of insider information about the dragon trappers, and happily tells her new friends. According to her she was practically an orphan anyway, but at least with this she doesn't have to worry about being a "proper girl" according to her village elders.

Cass- Similar to Steph, her father is a dragon trapper, albeit a far more notorious one. Also a bit of a mercenary for higher, who isn't afraid to steal and murder, and used her to his advantage in assassinations. Similar to canon she fled upon her first kill, albeit with any caged dragons who hadn't already been killed for skin and parts. She kind of just wandered for a while, before the dragons led her to the batfam's Nest. And she's gotten far more used to dragon body language than human, so it's a relief to be able to communicate and understand once more.

Duke- Duke was in a bit of an accident, thought he knows it's not that despite what everyone else in the village said. He knows his parents were poisoned, and he knows that the house bursting into flames wasn't from a dragon. Well, technically not from a wild dragon, he saw the chains and armor and everything else even if nobody listened to him. Which is what spurs him and his friends into attempting to find out why and who is attacking the villages little by little. Bruce and them aren't entirely sure what exactly happened, but Duke and his own dragon were the only survivor on that stolen boat, and they can recognize both acid and fire.

Damian- Damian, I am unsure about, because I'm not entirely sure where the League of Shadows would stand in a world like this. But he would still be Bruce's son. And I am thinking that the league would use magics, that's probably a part of the whole Pit. Which actually could fit with a lore thing with FR. But still, not entirely too sure, y'know? But he would end up with Bruce eventually, already with a dragon or would get one upon arrival.

1. HHTYD AU AHHHHH i hadn't thought about it but now i am!!! as for wing au, i drew some doodles for @mockingjaylad 's wing au!! jay is incredibly talented and they are constantly making my brain latch onto their art and writing

2. his energy matches having a dog, but i can see him being a cat person too. i think he'd be the type to get along with both, except his mortal enemy, Sprinkles the cat

3. ohhh this one is hard,,, i'd refer to jay for the batfam's wings because the birds they picked out fit their personalities so well!! i think peter would have a sparrow's wings? it's the first bird that comes to mind for him. a red winged black bird for natasha. i was thinking about a barred owl for tony but jay has me CONVINCED that he'd be a rosellas!!!

4. i think they should have HTTYD because it's a crime if they don't,, i think it shaped tim and jason's humor as kids. tim definitely related HARD to hiccup, and he'd have a toothless plushie. they show it to damian later and he cries and threatens to kill them if they tell anyone 💀

I can understand written Spanish fairly well, and as for Hindi… well, I know the alphabet and pronunciation, and sentence structure is slowly starting to make sense. I have been roleplaying for about 8-9 years and am very detailed in my responses! I try to match replies so if it's short then it's short or if it's long then it's long. I am a writer so I do put in details from time to time that may be too much so if that is ever the case please lmk and I'll tone it down.

Lucius blankly stared at his acquaintances, almost bewildered by them. "Have none of you played a game of Uno in your life?" He questioned, a slight country drawl to his words, something that often came out when he drank too much or got emotional enough. How the hell had a bunch of people his age never even seen a deck of Uno? "It's like, a classic, y'know? Have y'all been livin' under a rock?" Despite living in New York for years now, he never shook off that Midwestern talk.

Logan Howlett, by far the oldest of the whole table at the moment, gave a small snort as he let out the smoke of his cigar. "A rock? No. Runnin' for our lives is more like it. Not every day for pleasantries or domesticity." He stated firmly, before setting down a red reverse card onto the short pile. "Your turn, bub. . ." He leaned back in his seat with a huff.

Guys i just found an MCU oc story that i have a very very vivid storyline for in my head but can never get very far in when i write it because there's too much story and connecting the pieces is really really boring lol anyway the doc is entitled Trauma? Uhh, never heard of her... lol wow there's so so many ideas in my notes too, but they're not really written, just. vague thoughts. but have some of those too!

I have in my notes some ideas for a oneshot inspired by @the-booty-crusader's I Don't Belong Here (I Wish I Was Special) where the multiverse Alfreds get to have... a chat... I will write this someday I freaking swear

Okay. Here's my favorite, cryptid-y, magic/sentient Gotham AU I made up and hoarded like a dragon for so long. Because like, what if, when Bruce puts on the cowl, something happens, and it's like he's thirty again, top of his game, prime Batman, his back's only been broken once or twice, that bad knee really isn't that bad, did you see him pull that move just now? He couldn't in the gym earlier. Over and over and over, the cowl goes on, the Batman appears with a vengeance and goes back home, removes the costume, and sits down carefully because while Batman is still young and thriving, Bruce Wayne is getting older, and his children notice, Alfred notices, that he moves slower, he's in pain more when the cowl is off. Bruce notices too. Bruce doesn't stop. He has more to do, he will be out in Gotham until he absolutely can't anymore and it's not looking like that's going to happen anytime soon. This is good. This is good, right? He can help, he always wanted to help, isn't this what you wanted?

Time to distract myself with another au!

Let's do one of my favorite movie franchises this time, HTTYD!

We're gonna use original, good mom Talia and not bad mom Talia for this because I want some good mom Talia content

Talia recognizes that her son won't be safe with her father still around them, and she isn't certain Bruce would be able to protect them. She doesn't want her father fighting Bruce

So what does she do?

She runs away with the dragons, Valka style, except she does this while pregnant.

Damian grows up with Talia and a bunch of dragons, blissfully unaware of how some people think these creatures dangerous killing machines

Bruce doesn't really know what happened to Talia and their unborn child

He thinks the dragons killed her (because that's what Ra's claims)

Bruce winds up adopting his kids, practically all orphaned by dragons like he was (because plot convenience and also there's a lot of dragons, that's plausible)

Except Cass. People assume she was orphaned by dragons but no one can really confirm...? She just washed up on their isle on day. Bruce still adopts her regardless, her background is just relatively unknown. She winds up with Bruce at a younger age here and thus has no memories of where she came from

(Perhaps she was from a land of dragon riders but the boat her family was on came under attack and that's how she washed up on their shore? 👀)

Duke is the first in the family to seriously suggest an alternative to killing dragons

Cass is the only one who agrees with him at first

Then Dick, Cass, and Duke see something they never really thought they'd see: a rider on a dragon's back

Now I wanna leave this relatively open for people to play with/imagine and do with as they want plotwise however I'm also going to give my opinion of who would ride what dragon.

Damian rides a Nightfury, which, because I say so, are not extinct or nearly extinct :)

Talia gets a Bewilderbeast because yes :)

Duke Thomas also rides a Nightfury because, I mean. Come on. The manipulating darkness? Fits his meta powers.

The rest I can't explain, they just feel right, or I think would look cool

Your batfam fantasy/dragon au posts got me thinking about Dick being a Night Fury like Toothless from HTTYD 🤔

The night fury is one of the most intelligent dragons in the HTTYD-verse, they are super fast and really good fighters, they blend in with the night sky and lightning and when they are in "alpha mode" some parts of their body glows with a blue colour.

To me Night Furies have strong Dick Grayson/Nightwing vibes, what do you think?

Also!!! Toothless is super cute and adorable just like Dick✨

He would for sure be a Night Fury! I was totally imagining Dick and Damian in the scene from the first movie where Hiccup falls and Toothless dives after him while the fire engulfs them. 

Imagine the batfam getting emotional thinking Damian is dead because Dick refuses to unfurl his wings (because hello PTSD), and when someone finally coaxes Dick into letting them see the body, they realize that Dick kept him safe, and Damian is completely fine.

They have not! Let’s see..8. How did you get involved in your latest fandom?It’s funny because I never intended to get into Voltron at all. Shiro showing up on my dash so often actually used to annoy me pre-fandom because visually he is very similar to Batman’s Jason Todd, so I’d get excited for a batfam pic and then it wasn’t. And it didn’t help that a lot of the batfam blogs I’d been watching were suddenly swapping to Voltron. But back in September I think it was, I’d been working on a big art project for a contest, and my motivation was starting to lag. There hadn’t been any decent new fic in the Batman fandom recently (my usual carrot on a stick), so I thought, “Okay, whatever. I’ll check out that Voltron thing I guess. It’s short enough I can do that. Every time I reach an art goal in the project I will reward myself with an episode.” It was just supposed to be something to keep me going, a one-off thing to watch on the fly without getting majorly involved in multiple seasons. Only, it didn’t stay one-off. I was intrigued by it too much. There were too many possibilities. So then I did my usual post-new-series thing and went to check out the fanfic. This is usually where shows/movies/books fandoms still die for me. I’ll lightly browse fic, but if I don’t find some good ones fairly quickly my interest in the fandom dies pretty fast and I move on. Except through extremely lucky circumstance I happened to stumble across @maychorian‘s Boom Crash The Sound Of My Ship which had literally everything on my wishlist for light browsing: H/C and adventure with the two characters I had already decided I was most interested in, Shiro and Lance. After that I decided that damn, this fandom has some decent work in it, and delved further. But there were still things I’d wanted to see and hadn’t even after a much more in-depth browsing of the fic offering at the time. So I wrote it. And people responded positively, so I decided to stick around. And here I am! 23. Name a fic you’ve written that you’re especially fond of & explain why you like it.In the Voltron fandom Phantasmagoria still holds a high place for me. I really like writing psychological horror and creepy stuff and this fic just came together perfectly for me. I liked it so much I commissioned this gorgeous art for it, and I got a big kick out of peoples’ reactions to it too. However more recently Prince of Memory has become quite special to me. That one was very tricky to write, and had been more of a personal challenge project than anything. Not only was I pleased with how it turned out, but the reactions people had to it were exactly what I was going for, so I know my challenge was successful.40. What do you struggle the most with in your writing?Oh boy. Word length for starters, I literally cannot write anything short. Longfic is great, but there’s a time and a place, and keeping things short, sweet and to the point is a skill I fail at hardcore. I’m frankly stunned at people who can write drabbles. I also struggle a lot with emotional responses and character interaction, specifically for things like characters needing comfort or dealing with grief. The ‘comfort’ part of hurt/comfort is time consuming and exhausting, especially since I’m not a person who is very good with expressing emotion or physical contact to begin with. So a lot of those moments when a hug or a pat on the shoulder or characters just letting out all their grief and pain are a real struggle for me to wrap my head around, because for me they tend to be very uncomfortable responses IRL. It’s kind of funny since I write those scenes quite a bit, but you have no idea how many times each sentence is carefully examined, each character action is reworked, each word is picked oh so deliberately, in the hopes that I get it right. (See above as to why Prince of Memory was a challenge project). 45. What is your all time favourite fanfic?I’m honestly not sure I could answer this question with just one fic because there’s so many go-to fics in so many fandoms that I’ll return to for different moods. So I’m gonna point to this post I did a while back with Voltron fic recs because they’re all fics I adore and each one hits the spot exactly right depending on how I’m feeling. But then for other fandoms:For Young Justice/Batman Black Friar has some of the best, but The Volatile Verse is definitely my fave of the lot.For HTTYD, To Soar into the Sunset: A Night Fury’s Odd Memoir by Fjord Mustang is a tongue-in-cheek clever piece that I still love to this day.From One Piece, Seven Deaths by x-parrot is still incredible even 13 years later, and peroxidepest17′s Zoro’s Directions will have you dead from laughter (I just read it again while writing this. I died of laughter again).And from Shingeki no Kyojin/Attack on Titan, Ketita’s Levi’s will have you in stitches, and Emamel’s On the Shoulder of a Giant is an interesting AU take that I reread whenever I get back into AoT.I like a lot of fic I can’t choose just one okayCurious what this is for? This was just a silly little idea I had. It's mostly just giving the Batfam (sans Barbara Gordon and Duke Thomas) dragons from HTTYD. If you want, imagine this as a crossover, with the HTTYD films as the past of the DCU, but minus all the dragons hiding out in the Hidden World. Anyway, since I don't have a plot but dragons and partners, I'll just get into it.

Up first is Jason Todd, with his female Skrill, Surge.

Then comes Dick Grayson and his male Sand Wraith, Duststorm or "Dusty" for short.

Cassandra Cain and her female Stormcutter, Silencer.

Tim Drake and his female Death Song, Melody.

Damian Wayne and his male Deathgripper, Sirocco.

And finally, Bruce Wayne with his female Flightmare, Banshee.

Randomly started thinkin' about httyd & dc crossover

Where the batfam are like a cross between Valka was and night fury

Y'know, all mysterious cryptid 'children of lightning and death' etc Maybe a bit feral and living with dragons while freeing them from trappers & becoming myths in themselves lol

Clark probably still raised by farmers/traders (maybe found the baby on the remnants of a small fishing boat wrapped in silk and dragon scales/his cape)

Diana/wonder woman is probably something similar to that one island from race to the edge (I think called the Valkyries but I don't remember lol) that consists of warrior women who look like they have wings but it's small (or young I also don't remember lol) dragons that cling to their backs

Aquaman, I mean, underwater caves and hidden islands and sea dragons and all that (We've seen water dragons that carry people on their backs via ships or in their mouths before)

Pretty much justice league but they are or become dragon riders lol

If the batfam were How To Train Your Dragon dragons, what would they be? Not as riders with dragon partner but like, straight up as dragons from the franchise. What type of dragons would they each be, what class and size and all of that.
