Contrarian and Opportunist both use all pronouns, but for different reasons.
Contrarian does so because they saw the whole reality multiplying and breaking, how can they believe in any strong identity? + it's in his nature to break expected rules + she would want to try everything + they're stranger' ally + all other valid reasons y'know
Opportunist on the other hand does so just because he goes with anything people call him as long as they call him
"Gender is a social construct!" They both exclaim in unison, but one of their voices turns more and more into the triumphant villain laughter
#stp headcanons#his inspiration are CEOs in pride mouth#HEA used she about him once and he just went along#“if I have one gender privilege I'm pretty good. but once I start climbing with every gender' advantage.....well who knows where I'll stop"#“You can't take over the world by using pronouns” “I knowww I'm not trying to! anyways ladies first right-#“Psst! Tell her 'they will come' so that she'll think a few more people are coming and cook more!” “That's... not how it works”#gosh this is so stupid#“I wonder if ”they“ would mean distributing responsibility...and when it's distributed it's usually as small as possible....catch my drift?#and contra looks at him with big sparkling eyes and says “no idea what you're talking about tbh but welcome aboard queen!”#“Yeah....I suppose I am.....well let's just say.....a queen” while smiling mischievously#slay the princess#voice of the opportunist#voice of the contrarian#stp voices#stp opportunist#stp contrarian#Witch would use all his pronouns simultaneously to make him slip up with grammar sooner or later lol#(hard to do in english but imagine any other more gender-dependent language. but I believe oppy would still be suprisingly good at this)#i can'ttttt this whole thing is so silly. I'm deeply sorry. i.#quoquegiggles

one thing that really fascinates me about alex is his devotion to art – and more specifically, how he chooses to get some inspiration from scientific works of what he aims to implement in his art. every time one gets to examine some of his lyrics, or even how he explains these lyrics in an interview, they can be greeted by some bits of actual scientific information. an example is how he named his taquería on the moon with the term “information-action ratio”, coined by the critic neil postman, and referenced it in the song four out of five, something that might also indicate an interesting articulation with postman's concept. the line “cute new places keep on popping up”, for example, can express his well-known sardonic discontent regarding the flood of information being generated and transmitted over and over and, as much as it seems visually appealing and does give the idea of benefiting from advanced technologies, it doesn't really add anything substantial to the receiver's critical thinking – and worse, it distances the information receiver from the sender in a communication channel, according to postman.
what i'm saying with this interpretation is, it's known that alex is enamoured with the idea of gathering a bunch of references and condensing them into a mixture of metaphors in his writing, but it's so thrilling how, at times, we can find some bits of science inside of it – and it's even more exciting, just like playing a puzzle game, to find these references and analyse them by doing a similar research to what he did to create his works.
#alex turner#arctic monkeys#tranquility base hotel and casino#neil postman#well i hope this makes some sense#sorry for the grammar mistakes i’m very sleepy lol#as someone who works/studies in the information science field this is way too exciting for me and i just can't stop delving into it#i'm not even going to go further into how he builds actual personas - on and off-stage - to create albums. this is so admirable#and if this isn't the perfect example of someone who dedicates their whole life to art then i don't know what this is#*the 'may' 'can' 'might' verbs are written in italics to express an interpretation and not an actual fact regarding alex's work!#'cause it might mean none of these stuff lmao but it's just my interpretation of a work from an artist that i adore so much :)#in any case please feel free to reblog and/or reply to this post with your ideas on the matter i’d love to discuss more about it!!#jules.txt#jules.rar#references:#Postman; Neil. i dont even know if im gonna write this i just gotta dump my ideas here otherwise they’ll be sent to the void
#people who write fanfics are crazy (in a good way)#dont know how you guys manage to do this#thisll probably be more based of the movie than the book as i have no patience to reread it all just to get ideas#honestly if the oasis was real i would gladly just experience any movie this halliday guy has seen#thatd be cool#if it wasn’t all just based in 80s-90s stuff i would gladly live through xmen films#be charles xavier or something#altough i’d having magneto just hovering over my shoulder the whole time so i might leave those gays be#imma just be one of those oc inserts or something#i’ve definitely noticed my spelling and grammar is terrible#anyway erik falling in love with bald charles and then falling in love with charles with hair#raven should put charles avatar as bald as a prank but then he keeps it cause he finds it funny#trying to think if they should have mutations irl or not#cause idk how well superpowers would work in an online multiplayer game#especially telepathy#cherik#charles xavier#erik lehnsherr#x men#magneto#professor x#ready player one au#cherik au

Sometimes I think, "God, this is so ugly" while writing fics, but then I remember.. I'm writing in my 4th language, which I taught myself..... Gurl, it's enough if you understand it. I'm not trying to break some records 💀
I do read everything i write—no matter how small or big it is—at least 10 times before posting it, so that's part of the reason i end up hating things i write (when i read it after a while i feel better about them hehe).. but honestly, i feel dramatic about saying this almost every time i post something 😂
#grammar? who knows her#i wish i could show everyone how beautiful my writing is in my own language 😔#fic things#ig idk#honestly i have a deep appreciation for anyone who says they like my writing (even if i rarely believe it—sorry 🫡) for this exact reason#and also because i actually enjoy writing which could be shocking to me with how much i complain and whine while doing it lmao 💀#also i might be some level of a perfectionist but I'm not ready to admit that yet ehehe#oop I'm yapping again bye

THANKS @kimdokjafan you are so kind and generous. ok im cashing in the first of three blank checks to talk about faith trust and pixie dust (most recent chatfic) because the last two directors commentaries were too serious so let's do a silly one.
some p5r spoilers, and this is mostly about sumire, and it's long again. do i need to keep disclaiming that these are long? you should know me by now.
i had this written for a while before i started formatting it because i wasn't really sure if i should post it? i feel like silly chatfic is something people go to for predominantly lighthearted nonsense so i was like, maybe there's too much plot and dramatic misunderstanding and i should just keep this one for myself. but then i was like well nothing matters and maybe someone will have fun with it. it's kind of terrible how much fully or mostly completed fic there is my docs that just doesn't see the light of day lol. write for yourself etc but i like sharing! too bad it comes with the mortifying ordeal etc. anyway that was a tangent
potato counter is a neopets game. there's no deep lore i just like neopets. i guess in this universe ryuji doesn't play neopets? or maybe he's just never played potato counter specifically. i also have a different fic where ryuji DOES play neopets. it's about neopets and ryuji and goro talking on neopets.
i think this might literally be the first time ive written sumi in a fic because i haven't actually written that much fic for royal, like, now that im looking, literally almost none? and none that had a group dynamic. so it was kind of fun to find her voice for the first time in a silly groupchat like this. i was worried people would find her exclamation marks annoying but i personally thought it was endearing so i added it in there.
every time i do a gag where a character corrects their own typo i have to code more stupid little bubbles to make it happen but i think it's worth it. all the effort that goes into making tgis look as much like a real chat as possible
this obviously doesnt take place in the canon p5/r universe, but im imagining sort of a postcanon sumi personality where she's more comfortable being herself and isn't borrowing kasumi's brand of confidence, but she's visibly a really anxious person without that kasumi veneer. i also think in this universe sumire is a fairly recent addition to the friend group, and while everyone likes her a lot and she really likes them, i kind of wanted to emphasise that feeling of being in a friend group where everyone's established and you're sort of a plus-one? you don't really fit yet. part of that is her being new, part of it is her anxiety, part of it is just the kind of person sumi is where she's so polite and self-conscious she ends up taking herself out of things with her own good intentions. stuff like her interrupting the flow of an existing conversation by greeting everyone instead of jumping straight in because she doesn't feel comfortable inserting herself, which means everyone else stops to greet her even though that doesn't normally happen in a friend group, or making a point of thanking everyone for being invited to events while the others take it as a given.
idk i love that she feels a bit out of place with the phantom thieves in p5r. and part of that is a natural consequence of being a new addition in royal who can't be naturally integrated with an existing dynamic but i honestly feel like the writing team realised that and acknowledged it, and really leaned into it, and that made it work incredibly well for me. like, it's part of her character that she's sort of an outsider. it's not like p4g's incredibly clumsy integration of marie and subsequent attempt to shove her down everyone's throat as the canon love interest in p4ga (knife). sumi has that outsider vibe on purpose and it makes me really like her dynamic with the thieves as an individual
goro also feels slightly out of place in these chats, but his conversational style blends more naturally with the other thieves at this point and he even uses their codenames sometimes. i keep saying my chatfic series isn't a real Series because the lore keeps changing, but if we accept that they're all kind of following a General Continuity, assume this takes place some time after the last fic in which ren added goro to the groupchat and they made an effort to integrate him into their friend group. he's kind of there now and has settled into being the weird boyfriend. that's his role.
every time goro says something like "ren and i" assume it's the text equivalent of him talking to the group with his arm around ren's waist.
ok i got really fond of this silly running joke where sumi brings up the weather when she's feeling uncomfortable. she's so polite. i like this thread because setting it up meant i got to tie it off like this:
this just made me happy lol i liked writing this. i tried to use it to demonstrate that despite goro's abrasiveness he obviously knows sumire pretty well, he's attuned to her quirks and knows how to tell when she's having a bad time with her anxiety, so he uses her little weather habit to ground her.
i honestly dont think goro and sumire could be considered close in p5r and as much as i like the "royal trio" in canon they're not really... like... friends? with each other? they're both attached to ren, so it' more a V shape than anything else. but that said, i really LIKE goro and sumi's canon dynamic. he takes a really grouchy but politely attentive supervisory role to her during their few forays into the palace as a trio where he doesn't really know her well but clearly identifies her as a harmless little tryhard who needs some guidance and steps into that role grudgingly, and she immediately looks up to him despite being very wrong footed by his ruthlessness, which i find incredibly charming. i think given time they could be good friends, they just didn't get much chance to know each other very well in canon. so i tried to kinda do that here.
once goro stops being evil and joins the group they all kind of tiredly accept that his role is to occasionally push a cup off a bench while smirking and refuse to clean it up. emotionally, i mean.
wait i need to backtrack chronologically to talk about akeshu.
in this scene they're in the same room lol talking and snickering while typing. im trying to get at that vibe of the annoying couple who is flirting with each other, via you. you know? like ostensibly they're talking to you (sumire) but everything they say to you is part of their stupid game. sumi is incidental to goro and ren teasing each other about flirting with someone else, goro is reporting everything ren says because his boyfriend is so eye-rollingly foolish in a cute way. they're very tickled by how amusing and charming they are. gross. disgusting. sumire im so sorry for putting you through this
anyway here are too many of my favourite jokes from the fic
#futaba gets a lot of my favourite punchlines because i love her. i think she's an incredible vessel for comedic timing#once again you can see how much i overthink everything#given the amount of thought that goes into character shit for what LOOKS like a stupid 3 second chatfic#but is really. a stupid 3 second chatfic with twenty years of overthinking behind it#it takes time and effort. to be this stupid#anyway i love sumi. i think she's so cute. i like her dynamic with the thieves so much#ive said it before but i think chatfic is one of those mediums that looks so deceptively simple because#you know it's just silly dialogue and memes. it's very accessible. anyone can write a funny chatfic#but i think it's such a character-forward 'genre' that it's really really difficult to do well in the sense that it feels like the characte#s you know and not just mouthpieces for memes with familiar names attached. so im kinda obsessed with the genre#it relies so heavily on every character having a distinctive voice without trying too hard to be unique#ideally you should be able to read one of these with no names attached ands till get a general sense of who's talking#without having to rely on liek (sorry) homestuck style quirks which make it visibly obvious#that' skinda hard because irl people's typing styles aren't THAT distinct you know. theres only so many variations#you can make to a person's use of grammar punctuation capitalisation etc before it becomes a gimmick instead of an idiosyncrasy#but hopefully if the character voice is strong enough their identtiy should come through more subtly anyway. idk .idk if im there but i lov#to work towards it#wow i wrote anothr essay in the tags about my love for Modern Epistolary Fiction (chatfic)#after already writing a whole essay in the post#i mgonna shut up guys thanks for having me#rookfic#asks#p5#rookthots

Bedtime but oh how I wish I had coherent thoughts about. Amaris.
#wow i have a ramble tag now#wow i have an ocs tag now#amaris being my dragon age inquisiton character. my - inky is stupid and quizzy is not better. he's amaris#'inquisitor' 'herald of andraste' 'your worship' leave him alone. he needs a nap and some free time#accidentally made his relationship with vivienne so textured. i completely understand it In My Heart#because i talked to her twice and immediately got 'teacher i respect deeply but disagree with a fair bit' energy from her#like. i've seen people say they like her as a character but not as a person? i like her as a person too!#i don't think we would be friends but there are people in your life you like that aren't your friends#vivienne and my high school japanese teacher who loves cats and grammar should have tea together. is what i'm saying#anyway yeah vivienne. and cassandra and sera. Women#like genuinely the way i've been going around with amaris... these three.... Texture. crunchy#oh cassandra and amaris....... oh cassandra and amaris.#that one isn't explainable with human words. the way she defers to the inquisitor if she trusts them?#like. she has bits where she disagrees with your choices but she respects that you have made a choice.#cassandra..... and the faith discussions with her too. good god. well. maker. i should say#did you know i thought amaris should also have the greatest honor i can imagine bestowed upon him: a fall birthday?#and like. i'm not sure when during the year the events of dai are supposed to be happening. i feel like i saw a timeline but i can't find i#i'm ignoring it because logically like. how is all of this happening in just a year. hi. not thinking about it#but like depending on when in 9:41 the conclave is. either amaris' birthday has just passed#and then it's sad because he celebrated and then left his clan for a yet-undetermined amount of time#or it was soon to happen and he's stuck in haven or a mission on his birthday. which is also sad#away from all his friends with people he doesn't know trying to save the world. and he's now 28. no presents. poor guy#dice said early october but i'll see if it sticks#i also want to think about his family but it'll happen later#many things to think of with him....... oh amaris

For the love of all things holy please, please, if you are applying to an institute of higher education, DO NOT USE CHATGPT. I promise you that if I, a person who makes college application essays suck less in exchange for ready money, can tell within two sentences, an admissions officer reading thousands of the things can tell at first glance. We don’t even need the fucking AI detector. They’re just bad. They’re so bad. They’re appallingly bad. And they’re INSIDIOUSLY bad. It is so much harder for me to remove their insidious bland meaningless marketingese than it is for you to say everything you want to say, hammer it into a roughly organized form, and pay me six cents a word to help you tell your story in an organized, coherent, and effective way. I promise you, it is easier. And your essay will actually get through the automatic AI detectors and to a real human being.
And if you don’t wait until THE DAY OF THE DEADLINE, I can even teach you how to do the thing I do yourself, so you are never tempted to turn to that dealer of less-than-mediocrity again.
I’m very good at this. Trust me, you do not want to use ChatGPT at any point in this process, not for ideas or spell check or language tweaks. It will only make things worse.
#I should start charging extra for fixing ones drafted or revised by the devil#college applications#feel my eye twitching#normally I work with people for whom English is a second language#who have excellent things to say and slightly dubious grammar#and a lack of familiarity with English narrative essay structure#also a lot of compsci folks who can write beautifully in C++ and not at all otherwise#my favorites to work with are the rare ones who actually want to know what I’m doing and why and how they can do it#I had a great one once#we worked on her essays over two months#and I did no direct rephrasing at all#she wanted to know how to do it#and she learned beautifully#I do not do academic essays though#that is what the college writing center is for

"if people struggle with your they/them pronouns, tell them to pretend you're a swarm of bees" if people struggle with your it/its pronouns tell them to pretend you're The Oracle
#“everything as The Oracle foretold. it knows past present and future.”#“my friend's cake was really nice. it really knows how to bake!”#when i was like 12 and learning english. pronouns other than she and he were not that easy to get a hang of#i got it pretty quickly but i know there are people that struggle (not because of transphobia) but just because they learned differently#sometimes silly stuff like this makes inclusion easier for people who have a hard time applying abstract grammar

actually making my tags from my last post into their own post. writers who struggle with grammar, spelling, typos, errors etc i love you. writers who struggle with rereading their stuff thoroughly no matter how much they try, who don't always have access to other people to help them read i love you. whilst reading through and checking for these things is good practice i really believe that the weight of it should not be put wholly on the writer's shoulders. especially writers who are neurodivergent, disabled, have any condition that can impede their reading + comprehension, are overworked and overtired, are not writing in their native language, list goes on....because grammar mistakes/language mistakes/typos have nothing to do with your abilities as a creative. this is where editors should be uplifting writers, helping them, not scrutinising them for something they cannot always control
#and in case anyone is going to say it...like i said in my tags i get that it can be frustrating#if it feels like a piece has NOT been reread or checked for these things at all#but even then its like...do you know the writers context? their background?#does the story itself still hold up strong creatively?#im just saying some leniency and grace goes far and esp in the short story/litmag scene i think#an editor who is considerate and inclusive should not use those things against a piece's worth#for me its like....1) the word spelling and grammar check is really confusing to work with sometimes#and also just. straight up does not work sometimes#and 2) no matter how much i reread and check for spelling and grammar i will forget a word. i will misuse a word. i will forget things#a bitch is forgetful! a bitch struggles with rereading their pieces and i do what i can to help that#but i need help and grace from the editors who wish to work with me!#i remember one time i wrote vacancy as vanacy in an excerpt in a writing update#literally passed me by and i was so humiliated?? nobody even pointed it out#but i assumed people were going to think of me less that i would make a simple mistake#its just...v hard and daunting being open with your writing sometimes lol lets all be kind to each other

I love learning ASL it’s so good. Makes me happy to learn it. I’m so glad my university has classes for it with professors actually steeped in Deaf culture.
#blue chatter#am I good at ASL? hahahahahahaha. no.#ASL and English grammar are incredibly different and even when I remember my vocab I am easily clockable as hearing#but I do have some language capacity now. enough to communicate the basics.#and I just. genuinely really enjoy it. it’s fun to learn and engaging in a way most of my classes just aren’t.#and I can. yanno. communicate respectfully w Deaf ppl. and learn about their culture#which is incredibly important given that I want to go into a field where there is a higher incidence than typical of Deaf people#autistic? you’re more likely to be Deaf!#not to mention the fact that sign language can sometimes be a useful alternative to speech for nonspeaking/nonverbal people#depending on the person obvi; some nonspeaking/nonverbal autistics cannot use sign language and that’s okay#but surely at some point I will encounter either a Deaf client or a nonspeaking/nonverbal client who uses ASL#and when that time comes I should have some idea of how to communicate with them#I also rly like the Deaf church by my parents’ house#their community is really welcoming and their services are really interesting#I think it’s rly cool how they take intentions directly from the congregation#they’ll raise their hands and then sign what their intention is from their pew to the ambo#which is rly neat#it is funny bc every time I go the Deaf ppl I talk to will tell each other ‘go slow she’s hearing’#which is ENTIRELY fair bc. I am hearing. and I do need them to go slower.#but it also makes me laugh bc truly everyone knows within a few minutes.#oh hey the new person? they’re hearing. yeah they’re learning ASL at college. sign slowly for her.#which again makes sense bc a big Deaf culture thing is keeping ppl informed. it’s not gossip it’s getting everyone on the same page.#Deaf ppl do NOT beat around the bush that is like the height of rudeness to them. u say what u mean goshdangit. do not waste their time.#which I appreciate the heck out of bc i don’t have to try and phrase things delicately or w/e#it was also funny bc my mom came w me while I was home for Christmas and they asked her if I was her kid#and she said yes. and the lady running the kid’s craft corner thing was like ‘great you’re doing a craft now’#and I’m sitting there. visibly over 18 years old. amongst several seven year olds. trying desperately to figure out how to say hot glue gun#I made a v pretty pinecone tree it was a lot of fun ^-^

On the perimeter of the Int.
so I just watched Interior Chinatown and discovered Archie Kao (and proceeded to start watching his entire filmography as you do) (also i think i really need to read the book Edit: finished the book!! might write a new post)
And I think it is so poignant that he is Uncle Wong
The ABC (American Born Chinese) who has a foot in both worlds (the first to realize the dangers involved and believes it’s his responsibility to protect his people!), who says
"I was born here. In this city. I've been here my whole life."
and yet is so grounded in both cultures
who finds the victims of the systematic violence resulting from the police procedural
is performed by the ABC who was raised on an American farm, who did not know Mandarin when he moved to China a few years back to find his roots and pursued acting there, who is now back in the US (source: his Int. Chinatown interviews), who has always tried to help. to change things (even if small)
In his interviews he talked about how he spent most of his time in Hollywood on procedural dramas
And parallels with Willis Wu who as a "Generic Asian Man" could not be the hero, the lead (on CSI: Enhance! On Chicago PD: Detective but tech guy — so many parallels)
So he, like many Asian Americans, IS Willis Wu (like Uncle Wong was Willis but even more similar)
but more importantly, his path of America -> Asia -> America is the path of so many people who are unsure of “self” and where they stand, thinking about where they come from and what that actually means
What being American Means, What being Asian Means, What being Asian-American Means
so I think it's likely this show represents a culmination of his journey of self discovery
As a Chinese American
And what that means to him.
Not at the intersection of two cultures but Cape Horn -- a confluence
Where oceans crash together and people get submerged
where there is a distinct divide but you can’t see it when you’re in the water
In Chinese there's a saying: "见山是山,见水是水;见山不是山,见水不是水;依然见山还是山,见水还是水", which roughly translates to “Seeing mountains as mountains, seeing water as water; seeing mountains not as mountains, seeing water not as water; still seeing mountains as mountains, water as water"
like you're back where you are before, and it's the same
but it’s different now
Which applies to so many things here.
#who cares about punctuation and grammar at 4 am#ok at this point i have no idea what im saying anymore and its definitely not what i started off typing#i have been staring at this for the past half hour and forgotten what i was thinking about#I was thinking about so much and not all of it written down#interior chinatown#Archie Kao#maybe that’s why ep 6 stood out to me so much#that moment during the interrogation#when he switches from Mandarin to English#I wonder what emotions he is channeling#this show is so meta#uncle wong#ABC#Asian American#Identity#self-discovery#Willis Wu#therein we find connection#thinking about a different title#int. and ext. of the self#but a title is a construct in the same way a border is#Wong says “I’ve kept quiet for so long#but chooses to spill it all in the precinct when he meets Willis#I wonder if that’s how Archie felt seeing the script#like: i am seen. i am not alone. this struggle was not for nothing#and his past roles that are totally a reflection of that journey but that’s another post#This certainly has been fodder for my own self-discovery and I hope its the same for someone out there. And we are not alone.#In some things we dont get a choice like how we are shaped by expectations and experiences.#But that means there are always people who have been shaped the same way#That also means: You never know what you can/might become next or what you have potential for

Hello everyone!! I'm back with another post about my original universe, this time about nymphs!
This is even longer than the vampire one so the rambling is under the cut, and I was so tempted to include information about my inspiration for certain things and why I made the creative decisions I did, but I refrained because I wanted to keep this focused and not go off on tangents (however, if you do want to hear about that stuff, feel free to send me an ask at any time! I'm always happy to ramble about this universe!)
So. Nymphs. They're typically defined (by humans) as nature spirits, but what does that mean?
Well, the literal dictionary definition is "a spirit born from the earth or water; a being connected to the earth." Nymphs are, in short, personifications of nature. That's not to say that every little aspect of nature has a corresponding nymph- but there are several kinds of nymphs for several different types of nature.
Nymphs, as a whole, can be divided into two categories: land and water. There are a couple types of nymph that could fit into both categories, and one specific type of nymph that doesn't fit into either, but most nymphs can be clearly defined as one or the other.
Nymphs frequently spawn in areas with high magical concentration; why this is, nobody knows, and most other scholars have put it down to those areas being sacred in some way. These scholars are the same ones that hail nymphs as creations of the divine, made to safeguard the lands that are rightfully ours, so any conclusion of theirs must be taken with several grains of salt. I find that many scholars who subscribe to this field of thinking have never even seen a nymph in their lives, and assume that they are all perfectly like us humans (despite their appearances). This is a lie, one that continues to be retold despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary.
To understand nymphs, one must first understand that they are not human. They are sentient, intelligent, and quite interesting, but no matter how humanoid their shape might be, they are not and never will be even close to human beings. The exceptions to this rule will be covered later, but true nymphs are nature in its purest form: wild, unpredictable, and untameable. Like fairies, they operate on an entirely separate morality than humans, but unlike fairies, there are no clever tricks you can use to escape them, no set rules you may follow. If fairies are order, nymphs are chaos. If you should encounter a nymph, then by all means converse with them and befriend them if you like, but never forget that they are not the same as you, and no matter how benevolent they may seem, they could turn on you in an instant.
With all of this out of the way, let's finally get to the types of nymphs and their origins.
Land Nymphs
This category of nymph, as the name suggests, are tied to the land. There are several kinds of nymphs who fall under this category, and those nymphs have so many subspecies among them that if I listed them all, this text would be thicker than my torso.
Still, I shall endeavor to at least impress upon you the general idea of which nymphs come from where, so that you might know to use the correct terminology when describing to a friend and encounter you may have had in the woods or fields. Any further study into the subspecies can be found in other, more involved texts, ones whose authors were compensated enough to care about listing every type of nymph that could possibly be found in our lovely lands.
The first to be aware of are dryads, nymphs who have spawned from trees. It is unknown how long a tree must live before becoming a dryad, but this author suspects it to be somewhere in the hundreds, if only for the fact that cutting down younger trees has not as of yet brought a furious dryad out for my blood into my path. Should this change, this text will naturally be updated should I survive long enough to do so.
There are as many types of dryads as there are types of trees, and though there are certainly scientific names for each and every one, I personally have found that simply using the name of whichever tree they spawned from is quite sufficient. A dryad who spawned from an ash tree is an ash dryad, from an oak tree is an oak dryad and so on and so forth; I am quite sure I need not recount the name of every tree for the reader to understand my point.
True dryads, once born from whichever tree they are, are from then on about as attached to the tree as a human might be their parents; their personal feelings vary from nymph to nymph, but in terms of life force, they can and will live even if their tree has been cut down. Unlike humans, the only thing that can kill a true dryad is when the last trace of their tree has disappeared from this world; be it by decay or fire or a misplaced disintegration spell, once the tree is well and truly gone, so too is the dryad.
In terms of a dryad's appearance, their skin will be made out of the same bark as their tree, their hair the same leaves, their innards the same wood. Their eyes may have fruits or flowers in them depending on the tree and time of year, but they may simply be empty sockets. In any case, you should know a dryad at first sight, for unless walking trees are quite common in your place of residence, there's really nothing you can mistake them for.
I would give a description of a dryad's typical personality, as so many others have in their own texts, but my experiences with them have made me aware that they differ in personality as much as humans do; this holds true for all nymphs and I will not repeat such trite and blatantly untrue statements as "all dryads are nurturing, all naiads are mischievous," etc. That is my final statement on this matter and if I receive one more letter from my editor asking where the personality descriptions are, I swear I will-
(Editor's Note: The rest of this tirade had to be cut for its vulgarity and surprisingly creative threats towards me, my place of work, the scholars that continue to perpetuate these stereotypes, their families, and oddly enough, any cows they may have in their possession. Rest assured it was very much unsuited for such a text, but I preserved as much as I was morally able to.)
The florae, nymphs born from flowers, differ from dryads in appearance and origin, and that is where the differences end. They are comparatively rarer as flowers are quite fragile and much more likely to be destroyed, but so long as the vine or shrub or roots survive, so too will the flora. Oddly enough, trees that produce a dryad may also produce a flora from its flowers.
Florae are typically made out of whatever their flower bloomed on, be it vines or stems or branches. Whatever their flower was, replicas of it will be blooming all over their body, including in their eyes, and their hair will be made out of its petals. I have encountered florae many times, and I have yet to figure out just how some of the hairstyles they have are physically possible. One of the many mysteries of life, I suppose.
I suppose now that we have discussed dryads and florae, we must now discuss the dragon in the room: the dryads and florae that were once human beings.
There are many, many different theories of why and how this phenomenon occurs, but there are three facts we know: one, that if a human being is turned into a plant, they will inevitably become a nymph, two, that these humans are visually indistinguishable from true nymphs, and three, they are much more fragile- if their tree is cut down or their flower dies, they will die too and there is nothing that can be done about it.
It is for this reason that turning people into plants is so harshly punished, for you have condemned them to either an early death or a painfully prolonged life that could easily be cut short by anyone unaware of their plant"s true nature. But this is not a book about ethics or law, and if you wish to know more, than you must look elsewhere, for I have shared everything that is relevant.
With that out of the way, let's talk about (gods save me) the other land nymphs.
There are nymphs far older than human civilization, and indeed, humanity as a whole. These nymphs are known to the particularly religious as "The Elder Ones" and to the rest of us as simply the land nymphs.
The best way to explain these nymphs is to take a quick look at history. All throughout time, the earth has been shifting and changing, and as it changes, so too do the nymphs who personify it. These nymphs are fluid and ever changing, their types only vague classifications that serve to describe just what they represent at the moment. They are old, wise, and frustratingly reclusive, and the only reason we know they exist is because of what other nymphs have told us.
Thus far, the classifications are:
Oreads (mountain nymphs)
Valleaeae (valley/pasture/glen nymphs)
Pratae (meadow nymphs (Editor's Note: I personally don't understand the point of this distinction))
Napaeae (dell nymphs)
Haliae (seashore nymphs)
Umidae (wetland nymphs)
This is all we really know about them, and though other nymphs claim that it was them who created all other nymphs, that sounds far too religious for this book.
Water Nymphs
Water nymphs are far less varied than land nymphs (thank the gods, this chapter is getting long enough as it is) and they are all, in terms of origin and appearance, functionally the same.
Naiads (the term for water nymphs in general) spawn from a water source that isn't the open sea (why, this is still unknown.) They are made out of water and may adorn themselves with objects found in their water source, such as colorful rocks or flowers and things of that nature.
The subspecies of naiads are:
Lacuae (lake nymphs)
Pegaeae (spring nymphs
Fluminae (river nymphs)
Naiads are a curious case. Unlike land nymphs, they cannot be killed by any means. Instead, they will spawn, live as long as they like, and then once they're done they will dissolve into the water from whence they came, and another naiad will spawn and the cycle will start anew.
There will never be more than one naiad at a time from one water source, and we have yet to discover any nymphs born from the ocean.
Underworld Nymphs
Underworld nymphs have only been said to exist by the precious few undead who are willing to discuss such matters. They are not proven to be anything more than the dreams of a dying mind, and thus I will not be including them in this text no matter how much my editor begs me to.
If you wish to research them, there are a number of scholarly texts that hotly debate their existence, role in the Underworld, origin, and quite literally every little thing about them.
Vagari
Whatever Vagari may be, they almost certainly aren't nymphs. Some say that they are the children stolen away by fairies, others say that they are the tormented souls of lost travelers. All that can concretely be proven about them is that they can be seen wandering the woods, wearing clothes made out of animal skins and leaves, and wearing a mask in the shape of an animal's head.
I write about them in this text solely because we are just uncertain enough of their true nature that they could, possibly, be some form of nymph.
And with that, this text comes to a close. I hope this will serve you well wherever you may be, and always remember: if you should meet a nymph, treat them and their source with respect, never forget that they are as wild as the earth that formed them, and don't get too attached to any objects they may see in your possession. Or just run. That would work as well.
