OC NAMING TIPS!!

quick tips for naming when your super confuzzled

-Find an adjective or attribute that desccribes your character well, and search up "names that mean xxx" (Example: Mustafa=Chosen, Amaris=child of the moon, Circe=magic. etc!)

-Open a random letter generator (i know, i know) and go until you find a good name, feel free to modify ofc

-Imagine the character's general personality: what would they want their name to be? if given the choice what would they choose?

-be cryptic and make secrets. rearrange words important to the character or reverse them. is it cringe? cringe culture is dead. be fucking spooky.

-stare at their design until a random fucking name pops into your head (works I swear)

-set in a normal, realistic IRL environment? look through baby name lists online or ask ur guardians if your in casual contact with them

Alright, I'm gonna have to be ""that"" person here is a PSA if you're making an OC with a Chinese name:

In Chinese, the last name goes first and then the first name. Same applies for Japanese and Korean. E.g. it's Hua Mulan, not Mulan Hua. Hua is her family name

If you want to write their name in Chinese, because lets be real Chinese characters look hella cool, please look up how to write them. When you write in Chinese, stroke orders play an important role. What is Chinese Stroke Order:

here is a very useful website where you can put in a Chinese character and it will show you the correct stroke order

3. Please double if you used the correct Tone Mark Placement when you're writing their name with latin letter. Tone marks are the lil accents on top of vowels:

I know it's hard to find the correct tone mark on the keyboard sometimes, but if you mix up á and à, those are two different sounds, and changes the meaning of the character/word.

I've had to gently correct some people already about the tone marks used because I can tell what their name was supposed to be but it was the wrong pinyin

Hi! I have a question if you would like to answer: what made you want for Arlow and Lucanis to be best friends prior to the events of the game? Like what was the moment where you went „that would be a great idea“ and why?

Ahh yes, thank you for asking!! I am always happy to talk about them (:

Short answer: I'm a sucker for friends-to-lovers, especially with some kind of mess or drama in between.

Long answer:

Before Veilguard dropped, I was being so careful to not let myself get out of hand building a Rook, because even though I like to bend canon, I also like to know what the canon sandbox is before I do that. I wanted to know the backstories, the faction vibes, and the relationship/quest beats before I got my heart set on an OC. At the same time, I was battling the overwhelming urge to immerse myself in character building because I was so hyped. So, as a compromise (and this is the "moment" I would say), I let myself pick exactly one (1) thing about my Rook: she knows how Lucanis takes his coffee and he trusts her to make it for him.

(which became infinitely funnier once it dropped that crow!Rook was a de Riva, because of the poison angle. serendipity, lol)

Having read the short story The Wake, I knew that there would be some fuckery regarding Lucanis being "dead" (and I was already planning to romance him after reading Tevinter Nights). I wanted to give him and Arlow enough of a relationship history that his death would mean more to her than just "ah shit, the First Talon's grandson got got", but I didn't want that history to be romantic, because I wanted to watch the romance arc play out in game.

So, best friends. And with how intense Lucanis is about his platonic relationships with all of the Veilguard, I'm really glad for that choice - I think it suits both of them, and the stories I want to tell for them (:

somethign something 'i'm the prettiest poison you've ever seen /lyr'. queen bee, resident social climber, carrying a very complicated relationship with the idea of love and being loved, this close to killing orion with her bare hands- phoenix is by far one of my favorite of my OCs!! she's a very, very complicated character with a lot of depth to her (and if i went into detail i fear it'd do terrifying things to this posts length) and a very, VERY important one for the story!!

anyway this is mira! (they/she) since that wip is almost 20k words and counting i won’t give away too much but long story short she’s the result of meta going “one last time, i promise” and adopting yet another kid

also galaxia kinda indirectly picked the name :)

i’ve mentioned before that i headcanon that pretty much all astrals are autistic and this is just kinda an extension of that. whereas meta tends to suppress his emotions and conform to others, mira…doesn’t. she gets uncomfortable and upset and lashes out at people easily, and working through their emotions is no small task.

the main reason i chose to write them that way was for the sake of narrative but i’ve grown attached to it because there’s a lot of ideas there i’d like to explore. stuff about navigating emotions and relationships when existing is so suffocatingly uncomfortable. it’s not something i could center around Kirby himself, but i think it makes sense with a post character development meta knight.

kirby was definitely very excited to have younger siblings after being used to being the youngest in the room for so long!! (with the like. one and only exception being gooey.) he’s super affectionate with both of them and wants to have a close relationship one day, but for now mira is pretty unappreciative of that fact lol. they don’t like being pestered for hugs

everyone else is okay tho

(i know that’s hard to read. oops. “obvious bite marks”. siblings being siblings.)

mira also has a very love/hate relationship with the egg kid, being so close in age they kinda Have to get along but in typical sibling nature they also fight a lot. sure it’s probably rough for a while but i think in the end they’d be good buddies. maybe not as close as Kirby and Bandee but still.

anyway i have a lot of thoughts and am very busy but. i’m really enjoying writing about all this lately it’s been fun ^^

I kinda hopped into the dc fandom by reading fics (I know I know lmao)

But as I've read more comics and looked into different characterization and analysis I now have a more developed idea as to how I view a lot of the characters and have preferences to how their written. I'm def the type to click out a fic if I find myself thinking 'he would not fucking say that'

Is Lucy Mcfist's bio daughter or just his step-daughter?

Hi! Thanks for the ask, she is his bio daughter!

Born to Lucille and Hannibal McFist, Lucy used to be extremely close to her mother before she had unfortunately gotten very sick and passed away. McFist then went on to marry Marci and move her and Bash into their home, giving the poor girl no time to grieve.

Lucy doesn't really particularly hate her stepfamily? Marci tries to take her do girly things to try and bond with her but Lucy finds it hard to really engage, especially since Marci does look a lot like her bio mom. Bash and Lucy have a purely transactional relationship. She'll help do his homework and in return he keeps her from getting bullied. They're not friends and barely associate outside of the house and they both prefer it that way.

Lucy has an extremely strained relationship with Hannibal particularly. He was always quite neglectful of the girl, but after her mom passed he otherwise completely forgot about her in favor of her new stepfamily. She's taken care of and could have anything she ever wanted but what she wants the most is to feel like her dad loves her, which is something she'll unfortunately yearn for her entire life.

Lucy DOES have a father figure in her life however, being Viceroy. Viceroy and his husband sort of took over as surrogate parents to Lucy from a young age, seeing as their daughter was very close to the girl as is. The two try where they can to fill in where McFist is lacking which helps, but the two men can really only do so much.

Apologies for such a long post! I just think her family dynamics are interesting :)
