OC NAMING TIPS!!

quick tips for naming when your super confuzzled

-Find an adjective or attribute that desccribes your character well, and search up "names that mean xxx" (Example: Mustafa=Chosen, Amaris=child of the moon, Circe=magic. etc!)

-Open a random letter generator (i know, i know) and go until you find a good name, feel free to modify ofc

-Imagine the character's general personality: what would they want their name to be? if given the choice what would they choose?

-be cryptic and make secrets. rearrange words important to the character or reverse them. is it cringe? cringe culture is dead. be fucking spooky.

-stare at their design until a random fucking name pops into your head (works I swear)

-set in a normal, realistic IRL environment? look through baby name lists online or ask ur guardians if your in casual contact with them

listen I just... this path of harding's loyalty mission with this specific party. the disrupted self squad. the trauma has made me a stranger to myself Have You Seen Me I can't find my way back union. team fractured reality and I'm piecing it and myself back together as best I can (will you keep me company in the meantime?). the echoes and the implications. as above so below, as in you so in me, large cosmic scale to painfully small personal psychological scale. pain from the distant past still alive and snarling to be known in the now, and pain right now and ongoing but forgotten and unseen, supressed by means natural and unnatural (what's a little blood magic to help denial and dissociation along between frenemies huh solas). the extra meaning 'spite' takes on as a phrasing here (because it's all IN THERE this is all in the big text of the game!!! the themes echo back on themselves everywhere you listen for them!!!!). rook who once more doesn't even know that they don't KNOW they're also speaking to themselves as well as harding in this scene, to their own broken self and mind partially mirrored in someone they love (broken by the same perpetrator, even, in this case!!!!!!!!! hello solas once more), harding who doesn't quite know she's also speaking to them as well as to herself, to the dwarves, the titans, the world; everything and everyone that has ever been hurt, but whose stubborn kindness still has room for it all. (even for solas. hello again. we cannot escape you it seems mr dread wolf it's almost like you and your plethora of fuckery are thematically central or something (grudgingly affectionate).) even without perfect understanding of the full picture, the simple intention to be kind matters.

(forgive me for my sentimental nature and everpresent rookanis bias for a moment but ALSO lucanis looking over at rook Like That in this context, while those words are being spoken!!! spite's role in urging him towards escaping, living, thriving, instead of merely numbly surviving, and how it ties in with harding's revelation and decision here. and rook who opens doors and stays to walk through them with you, at the end being found and helped through a door of their own, and lucanis himself being one of the people to do that. do you. do you get me. I feel strange and wild.)

most of all harding just. saying the whole thing. summing the whole game up. 'we're different, but we're not gone. we will thrive -- in spite of you'. I was RIGHT about it all the way back in november actually and I should say it!!!!! the game is saying this on purpose. 'and then... everyone was there. and that's when I knew we'd be okay. that I'd... that I'd be okay'. my friend lace harding might be the only person who really gets it huh. and what a legacy for varric to leave behind in the narrative (and what a common da2 W, the little team that couldn't does it again better than anyone's ever done it by doing it the worst anyone's ever done it, hawke can't stop winning by always losing). no salvation but each other but my god that is plenty. my god. that is enough. once more

my head is in my hands I love this game desperately, it rewards really sitting with and taking in the themes so much. i'm so sorry for dropping a bunch of my own metas in there like that but I'm finding it so hard to say what I need to say all in one go, it's just -- it's so big! it's so much! I have so many thoughts to express about my unified theory of veilguard and only my poor battered neurons to do it with, please look upon me with clemency and, perhaps, forbearance. and it's so interesting that you can bring another companion along with rook and harding in this scene and have it mean just as much with slightly different nuances, have it resonate just as much with the overall meaning the game is trying to get across, because they're truly all tied in with each other that way; they're all part of a larger truth. you think it's one theme after another but the damn things overlap etc.

Alright, I'm gonna have to be ""that"" person here is a PSA if you're making an OC with a Chinese name:

In Chinese, the last name goes first and then the first name. Same applies for Japanese and Korean. E.g. it's Hua Mulan, not Mulan Hua. Hua is her family name

If you want to write their name in Chinese, because lets be real Chinese characters look hella cool, please look up how to write them. When you write in Chinese, stroke orders play an important role. What is Chinese Stroke Order:

I'm sorry guys I know you're trying but I can usually tell when someone copied the Chinese from just a picture😭😭😭

here is a very useful website where you can put in a Chinese character and it will show you the correct stroke order

3. Please double if you used the correct Tone Mark Placement when you're writing their name with latin letter. Tone marks are the lil accents on top of vowels:

I know it's hard to find the correct tone mark on the keyboard sometimes, but if you mix up á and à, those are two different sounds, and changes the meaning of the character/word.

I've had to gently correct some people already about the tone marks used because I can tell what their name was supposed to be but it was the wrong pinyin

I have been drawing some ocs lately but didn't finish anything

First there's this demon girl, her name is Sharr, I've been trying to figure out how I wanna draw her, I actually painted over an old reference I had of her (the one that's fully shaded here) and I'm kinda proud ngl, couldn't finish anything worth posting tho (the legs look goofy on that ref after I painted over the rest but I'm too lazy to paint over the legs too)

And then on the other extreme end of ocs I drew The Cat as Miku, actually I dew the lemon melon cookie Cat, but for mesmerizer I mostly edited Miku with Teto and drew over that, I just wanted to see what she would look like in that style (I think it's cute)

I might post the melon lemon cookie cat by itself after I fix some parts (like the feet)

Anyway I'm happy to report I continue drawing! I thought I would have lost steam by now but being very self indulgent is helping

Ahh yes, thank you for asking!! I am always happy to talk about them (:

Short answer: I'm a sucker for friends-to-lovers, especially with some kind of mess or drama in between.

Long answer:

Before Veilguard dropped, I was being so careful to not let myself get out of hand building a Rook, because even though I like to bend canon, I also like to know what the canon sandbox is before I do that. I wanted to know the backstories, the faction vibes, and the relationship/quest beats before I got my heart set on an OC. At the same time, I was battling the overwhelming urge to immerse myself in character building because I was so hyped. So, as a compromise (and this is the "moment" I would say), I let myself pick exactly one (1) thing about my Rook: she knows how Lucanis takes his coffee and he trusts her to make it for him.

(which became infinitely funnier once it dropped that crow!Rook was a de Riva, because of the poison angle. serendipity, lol)

Having read the short story The Wake, I knew that there would be some fuckery regarding Lucanis being "dead" (and I was already planning to romance him after reading Tevinter Nights). I wanted to give him and Arlow enough of a relationship history that his death would mean more to her than just "ah shit, the First Talon's grandson got got", but I didn't want that history to be romantic, because I wanted to watch the romance arc play out in game.

So, best friends. And with how intense Lucanis is about his platonic relationships with all of the Veilguard, I'm really glad for that choice - I think it suits both of them, and the stories I want to tell for them (:

Hello! Thank you for signing up for my little fandom project. Like I mentioned in my post, these will be once a month character building/exploration questions. I don't expect immediate answers. Feel free to take the whole month, if you need! If you have more than one Step, pick your favorite or whichever you think needs more love.

We're going to start with the basics this month: Where did your Sidestep get your name? Do they know what it means? Do they feel any particular way about their name?

I had to hold off on this til I revealed my second sidestep cuz I have no idea how to answer this one for Corey yet lmao. so yeah here's some Chase lore

Chase is her regene name! Her role on missions was essentially stalking/tracking targets that knew they were being hunted and thus were being really evasive and hard to reach, and she took her job WAY too seriously. Unlike Corey, who was infamous for being a defiant shithead towards their handlers, she was known for being teacher's pet and always on her best behavior. So the other regenes she worked with on missions started referring to her by her job title as a not-so-subtle dig at how single minded she was about it. a sort of "this Ken's job is beach" joke

She knows they meant it mockingly, but she embraced it and still loves her name/wears it like a badge of honor. Shes proud of her past accomplishments (even if there was a brief sidestep era "oh god what have i done" phase). There was no hesitation about using that as her name when Ortega asked her for one.

She chose her last name after a conversation she had with Julia about tia Elena/ her choosing to go by Ortega. For better or worse, she viewed the director through a familial lens, so choosing "Siepen" as a surname was both a power move and a way of deflecting blame for her problems onto her. Very much a "you made me/raised me to be like this so if you dont like it, its your fault" sort of vibe.

somethign something 'i'm the prettiest poison you've ever seen /lyr'. queen bee, resident social climber, carrying a very complicated relationship with the idea of love and being loved, this close to killing orion with her bare hands- phoenix is by far one of my favorite of my OCs!! she's a very, very complicated character with a lot of depth to her (and if i went into detail i fear it'd do terrifying things to this posts length) and a very, VERY important one for the story!!
