OC NAMING TIPS!!

quick tips for naming when your super confuzzled

-Find an adjective or attribute that desccribes your character well, and search up "names that mean xxx" (Example: Mustafa=Chosen, Amaris=child of the moon, Circe=magic. etc!)

-Open a random letter generator (i know, i know) and go until you find a good name, feel free to modify ofc

-Imagine the character's general personality: what would they want their name to be? if given the choice what would they choose?

-be cryptic and make secrets. rearrange words important to the character or reverse them. is it cringe? cringe culture is dead. be fucking spooky.

-stare at their design until a random fucking name pops into your head (works I swear)

-set in a normal, realistic IRL environment? look through baby name lists online or ask ur guardians if your in casual contact with them

I mentioned in a previous post that I was thinking about changing my name and I’ve finally come to a decision on one I like. I’ve been using it for a few weeks with family and friends and I’m happy with it I think. Before I reveal it here though I wanted to play a little game.

I’ll reveal it once the poll is over. For now though I’m interested to see what people think! :3

My deadname is Tereza. I chose to call myself Terry, to appease the cis people around me so that they don't really have to switch the way they're calling me. "Tereza" is very frequently shortened to "Teri" and given that I hate all of the alternative ways to shorten it, most people, including my mom, were already calling me that.

I've had a cis friend thanking me for not really choosing a different name because she wouldn't be able to call me anything else.

However, Terry is not a name used in Czechia at all. Which is not a problem per se. It's not even sort of a language-neutral name (at least as far as European languages go) like Morgan or Alex or Erik or Dan or whathaveyou. There are no babies getting named Terry in my country. Which is, again, not a problem per se.

I've seen the sentiment floating around that if you're not from an English-speaking country and you name yourself with an explicitly anglophone name (such as Terry), you're actively contributing to the slow cultural colonization and erasure of your language by English.

And I mean, I already speak English way more than I speak Czech. A taxi driver once heard me speak Czech, my first fucking language, and asked me if I was a foreigner and how long was I learning.

And of course, this isn't as big of a deal as it would be for people of color whose culture is actively stigmatized and marginalized by colonialism. When I say "language colonization," I don't mean to imply that Czechs are victims of colonialism. It's still a central European country.

However, it does have a rich history of being subjugated by Austria, Germany, Hungary and Russia, and our language has once already faced near extinction in favor of German.

And I'm worried that I'm gleefully contributing but swapped one language for another.

Plus, even though I really like the name Terry, it's something that I happen to like, but I didn't really choose because I liked it. I chose it to take as little space as possible. To increase my chances of being accepted through making my own fucking name all about my mom and my cis friends, instead of myself.

I won't change it. I made my choice. It's a nice name. But I would lie if I said that it doesn't make me hate myself just a tiny little bit more that I threw away my chances of either being creative or affirming my own language.
