#how to 'preserve fruit'

Anyway, headcanon that the reason Zelda's achieved some fame as a recipe author in totk is that Link actually isn't that creative of a cook. He has half a dozen recipes for every elixir or horse liniment and "horse liniment" you could name, but he doesn’t have the cooking instinct.
He's a good cook when a recipe is involved, but when he doesn't have a recipe he just makes kebabs or greens and mushrooms. Camp food. Satisfying food, but not stellar.
And Zelda knows how much Link enjoys good food.
So she teaches herself how to cook.
And because she's never half-assed a thing in her entire life she gets really good at it.
And because she loves the science of cooking, she starts writing recipes
And so now we have Zelda's recipes as valuable commodities in TOTK, all because Zelda wanted Link to have better food.
#something something book publishing#seems a little cost prohibitive in Hyrule#the gazette is new#so recipes are memorized and passed on#somewhere in the hateno house are all the recipes#in a notebook#copied neatly in Zelda's best hand#the one that most people besides link#and the zora#have a bit of trouble reading#also purah absolutely *Has It* with Link's 'horse liniment'#and teaches him#(via some fun kitchen experiments with Zelda)#how to 'preserve fruit'#Link promptly uses his new knowledge#to purah's horror#to make pickles instead#totk spoilers#(minor ones)#totk headcanons

Hello!
If you're not too busy, would you mind listing some of the things you think count as death flags for Mr. Spender?
There's the obvious fact that he's the "old" mentor to group of young protagonists, but what else do you think would count?
OHH BOY ok so I'd think I'm a crackpot for this but since we're talking about Zack "Foreshadowing" Morrison. I have some thoughts
No harm in leading with the (chronologically) first thing that jumped out at me:
This one IMMEDIATELY made me antsy whenever I came back to it after my initial read, and considering Zack has referred to it on twitter in the past as one of their favorite jokes it's definitely not been forgotten about.
Second, the sheer amounts of near-misses, jokey or not, of Spender narrowly avoiding specifically lightning
Again, not much, but it's weird that it happened thrice, latter two of which had real gravitas rather than an one-off joke.
And third, Spender himself. He's repeatedly shown himself to be kind of a self sacrificing idiot, as well as prideful to a fault. Granted, it's both him and Mina trying to take on all the responsibility of saving Mayview and its inhabitants from their fate.. But Spender is exactly that right measure of doesn't-value-himself-enough (chest footprint aftercare or lack thereof), having an obscene amount of power (enables his loner act + pride) and poor judgement that has the capacity to put him at great risk. And it has!
Spender has not only shown low enough self-esteem to view himself as the de-facto scapegoat for the safety of the town, but also prideful enough to make very bad calls that end up in people, often himself, hurt (COUGH FORGE INCIDENT COUGH)
This is all conjecture, but it's definitely enough to make me worried about him :') Even if all this doesn't mean he'll necessarily die he's definitely getting (even more) seriously injured at some point. I love the guy but he's so far doing a horrible job of convincing me he wants to live bad enough to circumvent at least that
#not art#admin answers#paranatural#pnat#richard spender#pts-fic-notes-and-blog#before i continue on with tag ramble i just want to say tysm for leaving an ask!#none of my friends read this so ive been stewing on these thoughts for some months and i loved finally sharing them#this isn't exactly proof but the hijack possession seemingly being the final nail in the coffin for his and isabel's relationship.#idk it feels significant to me. thats one more tether to support kinda gone. someone who knows him well enough to know he's unwell#he seems not exactly content but fr incapable of not burning bridges as he is now. and considering how rashly he acts he REALLY needs those#to not do stupid shit all the god damn time with no buffer other than Lucifer. who for his measured approach to rick's hotheadedness#has honestly shown himself to be pretty lenient and kinda bad at controlling spender's more (self) destructive tendencies? so he dont count#to be clear i love spender to bits but he is dumb as rocks and has all the self preservation of a fruit fly. it needs to be said#also the lightning man... idk its WEIRD like especially on the reread its the thing that most consistently threatens him! it repeats#sure he gets chewed by a bat and banged up by forge but?? he somehow always comes back to lightning. catnine has it out for him#its something i didnt even really put together until i continued reading the flashback chapter AFTER getting this ask and went OHHHGNHF#which the only reason lightning is such a non issue is lucifer's powers. which belong to his sunglasses and not to the spirit in him#so its not like they can't be taken away he's just got a really good excuse for having those on all the time#TAGS GETTING SO LONG. ANYWAYS. i hope this is comprehensible lol

taash asking lucanis how to cook food muireann likes is so funny because this diva lives off dried fruit, nuts, spicy noodles and bread like 90% of the time
#when she gets her hands on fresh fruit it is frankly disturbing the way she eats it like a wild animal#she lives on a ship so it all has to be stuff that is easy to preserve after she's been on the water for a few days#also it's even funnier that lucanis offers to show taash how to make her tea considering taash drinks tea multiple times a day

okay so the rice wasnt holding shape as much as i wanted it to but was still cooked enough so i decided to make a mix instead of musubi. didnt really make fried rice per se... i didnt fry any of the rice but i did mix spam with rice, eggs, peas, and seaweed. could've used some carrots and green onions but i legit dont have any right now
#its a bit salty because i accidentally bought regular salt spam and forgot to adjust the rest of the stuff#but its fine#but i have enough for 5 whole meals from it if i add some fruit as a side#orr i could stretch it to 7 if i use my last can of soup to add to the last 2 meals#which is a relief#and i made a few oat and cinnamon pancakes with high protein content which is great#but im out of jam/jelly/preserves/whatever so thats a bummer cause thats how i usually eat pancakes#anyway i dont have much in my fridge or pantry til monday#but im relieved that ive got some really good food for these next few days even if im mostly eating the same thing#tree talks

Fruit Origins
Apples and oranges are best kept in the fridge, As they are used to the cool climate of the northern hemisphere. Bananas are best kept out of the fridge, As they are used to the heat of the tropics. I buy both, Place bananas outside the fridge as I place the apples and oranges inside, Acknowledging that you are used to where you grew up, And the farther you are estranged from home The more you become aware of the damage that severed roots inflicts upon you.

the thing is i would become a fruitarian if i didn't think it sounded like so much work
#you gotta stay on top of eating all your fresh fruit before it goes off?#and you gotta eat so much?? like that might be fine for normal ppl but for someone like me? the slowest eater in the history of the planet!?#but the only thing that sounds good to eat 100% of the time for me? fruit!!!!!!#i would obviously not be strict about it like i'd still eat other things (vegan obviously!)#but i just think if eating fresh fruit was easier life could be so much better#also add to the cons list how messy it can be like soooo hard to eat it with a fork or spoon unless you've cut it up beforehand#i just sigh wish it was easier to buy fruit salad that wasn't full of fucking melon lmao#even canned fruits kinda suck bcos of all the added sugar and preservatives#or like the reconstituted juice!! or they're in juice from other fruits????#if im buying pineapple i don't want it to come in pear juice!!!!!#anyway if you've read all this i'm feeding you an orange slice 🧡🧡🧡🧡

25 ways to be a little more punk in 2025
Cut fast fashion - buy used, learn to mend and/or make your own clothes, buy fewer clothes less often so you can save up for ethically made quality
Cancel subscriptions - relearn how to pirate media, spend $10/month buying a digital album from a small artist instead of on Spotify, stream on free services since the paid ones make you watch ads anyway
Green your community - there's lots of ways to do this, like seedbombing or joining a community garden or organizing neighborhood trash pickups
Be kind - stop to give directions, check on stopped cars, smile at kids, let people cut you in line, offer to get stuff off the high shelf, hold the door, ask people if they're okay
Intervene - learn bystander intervention techniques and be prepared to use them, even if it feels awkward
Get closer to your food - grow it yourself, can and preserve it, buy from a farmstand, learn where it's from, go fishing, make it from scratch, learn a new ingredient
Use opensource software - try LibreOffice, try Reaper, learn Linux, use a free Photoshop clone. The next time an app tries to force you to pay, look to see if there's an opensource alternative
Make less trash - start a compost, be mindful of packaging, find another use for that plastic, make it a challenge for yourself!
Get involved in local politics - show up at meetings for city council, the zoning commission, the park district, school boards; fight the NIMBYs that always show up and force them to focus on the things impacting the most vulnerable folks in your community
DIY > fashion - shake off the obsession with pristine presentation that you've been taught! Cut your own hair, use homemade cosmetics, exchange mani/pedis with friends, make your own jewelry, duct tape those broken headphones!
Ditch Google - Chromium browsers (which is almost all of them) are now bloated spyware, and Google search sucks now, so why not finally make the jump to Firefox and another search like DuckDuckGo? Or put the Wikipedia app on your phone and look things up there?
Forage - learn about local edible plants and how to safely and sustainably harvest them or go find fruit trees and such accessible to the public.
Volunteer - every week tutoring at the library or once a month at the humane society or twice a year serving food at the soup kitchen, you can find something that matches your availability
Help your neighbors - which means you have to meet them first and find out how you can help (including your unhoused neighbors), like elderly or disabled folks that might need help with yardwork or who that escape artist dog belongs to or whether the police have been hassling people sleeping rough
Fix stuff - the next time something breaks (a small appliance, an electronic, a piece of furniture, etc.), see if you can figure out what's wrong with it, if there are tutorials on fixing it, or if you can order a replacement part from the manufacturer instead of trashing the whole thing
Mix up your transit - find out what's walkable, try biking instead of driving, try public transit and complain to the city if it sucks, take a train instead of a plane, start a carpool at work
Engage in the arts - go see a local play, check out an art gallery or a small museum, buy art from the farmer's market
Go to the library - to check out a book or a movie or a CD, to use the computers or the printer, to find out if they have other weird rentals like a seed library or luggage, to use meeting space, to file your taxes, to take a class, to ask question
Listen local - see what's happening at local music venues or other events where local musicians will be performing, stop for buskers, find a favorite artist, and support them
Buy local - it's less convenient than online shopping or going to a big box store that sells everything, but try buying what you can from small local shops in your area
Become unmarketable - there are a lot of ways you can disrupt your online marketing surveillance, including buying less, using decoy emails, deleting or removing permissions from apps that spy on you, checking your privacy settings, not clicking advertising links, and...
Use cash - go to the bank and take out cash instead of using your credit card or e-payment for everything! It's better on small businesses and it's untraceable
Give what you can - as capitalism churns on, normal shmucks have less and less, so think about what you can give (time, money, skills, space, stuff) and how it will make the most impact
Talk about wages - with your coworkers, with your friends, while unionizing! Stop thinking about wages as a measure of your worth and talk about whether or not the bosses are paying fairly for the labor they receive
Think about wealthflow - there are a thousand little mechanisms that corporations and billionaires use to capture wealth from the lower class: fees for transactions, interest, vendor platforms, subscriptions, and more. Start thinking about where your money goes, how and where it's getting captured and removed from our class, and where you have the ability to cut off the flow and pass cash directly to your fellow working class people

Inspiring quotes from The Self-Sufficient Backyard
Here are some quotes from the book or from the authors that show their expertise and insight on self-sufficiency:
"We have learned that self-reliance is not only possible, but immensely rewarding. We have discovered that living simply does not mean living poorly, but rather living richly in ways that money cannot buy" - Ron and Johanna Melchiore, Introduction
"Gardening is not a hobby for us, it is a necessity. It is the source of most of our food, and therefore, our health. It is also a source of joy, beauty, and peace." - Chapter 1, Gardening
"Animals are an integral part of our homestead. They provide us with food, companionship, entertainment, and sometimes, frustration. They also teach us valuable lessons about life, death, and nature." - Chapter 2, Animal Care
"Renewable energy is not a luxury, but a necessity for off-grid living. It is also a smart choice for anyone who cares about the environment and the future of our planet." - Chapter 3, Renewable Energy
"Natural remedies are not a substitute for modern medicine, but a complement to it. They are based on centuries of tradition, observation, and experimentation, and they work with the body's natural healing abilities." - Chapter 4, Natural Remedies
"Food preservation is not only a way to store food, but also a way to preserve culture, history, and diversity. It is also a way to express creativity, flavor, and artistry." - Chapter 5, Food Preservation
"Home security is not only a matter of locks, alarms, and weapons, but also a matter of awareness, preparedness, and common sense. It is also a matter of attitude, confidence, and self-respect." - Chapter 6, Home Security.

*围炉煮茶·寒窗对酒听雨雪
'stars in the garden' by @jackofallrabbits
Here's the list of gifts:
Geisha!Sun: A beautiful tea-making set with a portable oven, the main teapot is made of terracotta, with a cherry blossom relief and four gold-edged ceramic cups. It is used by people when they "围炉煮茶(make tea around the hearth)", and unlike the traditional tea tasting activities, "围炉煮茶" focuses more on the enjoyment of the atmosphere rather than ornamentation. Geisha!Moon:《枕上宋词( Song Ci on the Pillow)》, English translation of Song Ci, this book is a selection of 115 hand-me-down Song Ci, which can be understood by native English-speaking animatronic while preserving the beauty of ancient poems to the greatest extent. Beautifully packaged with a hint of aroma and a lotus motif on the front and back cover. Geisha!Eclipse: A collectible replica of the Imperial Tang Knife, handcrafted by craftsmen at an expensive price, perfectly reconstructed with a gold and silver flat Tang horizontal knife (the original in Shosoin in Japan), with”鎏金错银(gilt silver)”, restored one-to-one (and bladed). cherry blossom!Y/N: A box of delicious Chinese pastries, held in a bamboo basket, filled with a variety of flower-shaped desserts that young people will love, the most special of which is a large custard rabbit cake(奶黄玉兔糕). The bamboo basket was accompanied by a box of desiccated coconut balls and some fresh fruit.(Only there is no traditional cherry blossom cake, because you can only buy one piece at a time, considering the distribution problem....)
Why Gift?
It started with a joke I had while chatting with Jack:

Then I thought, since I'm bustard, then this Chinese New Year's holiday, I have to send year-end bonus gifts to my employees, and then there is this doodles, and this post (just a joke for self-amusement haha, it has nothing to do with the novel itself~)
Here are some zoomed-in details:

Not to detract from the question of why the fuck we're doing this to anything else. Any living creature
Why the fuck are we doing this to ourselves?
I can't do a more deep opinion on this orca thing because yeah one can say "go orcas!", it feels good, doesn't it?...
but in fact those must be very scattered cases that won't change the fact that the current situation is that ocean transport is noisy, it's everywhere, and it must be driving these very, very sensitive animals crazy. Before motors, a whale could listen to what was happening in South Africa from the Argentine coast. Now their range of communication must have dropped to only a few kilometers: moreover, all the noise must be insane. There have been studies saying that even things like lawnmowers can make permanent ear damage to small rodents, and birds have had to adapt to city noises (their songs changed to a more "natural" pattern during the pandemic lockdowns) So I can't imagine what such things must be doing to the minds of orcas, one of the animals with the most complex and intelligent behavior registered outside of primates, and extremely sensitive to sound. Can we even understand what they're going through right now.
And this is not to mention the widespread whale (baleen whales, not orcas) hunting that decimated their populations to an absurd degree. All the world is currently going through a beyond worrying trend of defaunation, but whales were particulary hurt. There were 250.000 (estimated) blue whales before whaling, and they were decimated to less than 2000. Even today, with strict conservation measures, there's around 10-25k blue whales, and that's one species. Let that sink in.
Is there a solution to this, besides returning to the age of sail and banning ocean explotation? I don't know, there might be. I hope there is.
When I read about orcas, about their behavior, about their pods with their own almost cultural quirks and even dialects, so much we don't know about them, I only remember Arthur C. Clarke, when he spoke about blue whales: “We do not know the true nature of the entities we are destroying”
#I'll gladly go back to sailing like fuck this shit#yeah sailing is slower. Cry that you can't get goods imported anymore that destroy whole#ecosystems on big metal husks that also destroy ecosystems. Or y'know have to wait for them a little bit longer assuming they're not a fruit#or vegetable.#There are ways to live without fresh fish being delivered from a million miles away to our doorsteps each morning#we got better ways to preserve food over long distances#better ways of preserving food in general.#Not all places need imports anyway. We know how to stop Scurvy and a lot more stuff we didn't always know about.
