Dudes.
I grabbed a concha and a sprinkle cookie - made fresh every morning. Half a pound of the inhouse cut and marinated chicken. Housemade salsa. Then some chips and chicharones.
I just ate the concha with a caramel protein drink, like dipping it in? Fucking heaven. Haven't had a concha in nearly 30 years.
When I lived in the projects we used to have a guy come around like the fucking ice cream guy, just a car full of pan dulce, and he'd stop in the cul-de-sac and set up shop for like 15-20 minutes until he was out (it was a mostly Mexican neighborhood). Nice neighbor lady would buy one for me sometimes, sometimes another neighbor would come buy one for all the kids. Good fucking memories.

Sonia!!! It’s nice ask day and I’m here to ask what your favourite meal is please (you can give me a top 3 if you can’t choose) 💖💖
Hi Rae! Thank you for this nice ask and also for perceiving me because you know I can't pick one of anything. 😂
Top 3 meals (with pictures because I also perceive you lol 💖):
Omelets and breakfast potatoes/hash browns: Omelets are fun because they can be so versatile and are (thankfully) easy to whip up. I love breakfast potatoes (I mean, really any potato-- shout out to french fries!). Especially diner breakfast potatoes. IYKYK.
Tumblr media
Mangú con Salami, Huevo y Queso Frito: Another breakfast item, but honestly, I've had this for lunch and dinner too lol. This is a Dominican dish, and it's mashed up green plantain puree (mangú) with slices of salami, eggs, and fried cheese. We have lots of incredible dishes, but this one is a classic and my favorite.
Tumblr media
Fruits de mer: This dish is sadly no longer on the menu at my favorite restaurant. 😭 They updated the menu, blah blah blah. Lol. If it ain't broke, don't fix it! [I'm fine 🤣] But it consisted of housemade squid ink cavatelli, preserved lemon & chili pomodoro sauce, mixed seafood, and bread for dipping. It. Was. So. Good. I was devastated when I stopped by the restaurant late last month for a belated birthday dinner and found it was gone from the menu, but I will always remember it with adoration. Technically, I could learn to make it myself but it just won't be the same! Here’s a picture from my birthday last year, I totally don’t look at with yearning or anything. 😆

SALT, wtf like, i’ve never understood ketchup on these kind of fries. I’m not grossed out by ketchup or anything, but frying thin potato strips into a perfect golden crisp surrounding a slender tender stick of mash is the ideal form already, with a little salt to make what’s already there really pop ... putting ketchup on these is like taking a highlighter to the mona lisa
now them big ol’ steak fries you find some places, they get a bit dry in the mouth, and then sure, if ketchup is your go to, that seems fine, but i already prefer several other dipping situations. Usually some kind of aioli (which is just seasoned mayo, really).
But i will occasionally reach for some ketchup if it’s A: housemade, and/or B: spiced or seasoned. Like, in germany it’s common to find ketchup with curry in it, which i liked quite a bit, and i used to go to a place in san francisco that had a housemade serrano ketchup that was amazing

Gorilla Pies, 12417 Burbank Blvd, Valley Village, CA 91607
Tumblr media
I did not know about Pittsburgh style pizza till I visited Gorilla Pies and noticed all of the Pittsburgh memorabilia mixed with the LA memorabilia. The gorilla mascot is wearing a Pittsburgh cap.  Their tagline is “Pittsburgh style pizza with California soul.” I learned this after I ate the pizza. I was expecting it to be a typical pizza and I did notice some differences. First, the crust was puffed up A LOT on the edges but thin elsewhere. Second, the crust was more flavorful because they ferment the dough. It didn’t seem as cheesy (this is because they use a blend of mozzarella & provolone).
You can order whole pies or pizza by the slice, sandwiches, salads, wings, loaded fries, desserts, and drinks.  They also have lunch combos and weekly specials. You can also order custom pies with interesting toppings like char sui, pastrami, brussels sprouts, kraut-chi, nasturtium, soppressata, buffalo chicken, etc. Vegan cheese is available. Also, they have a huge range of dipping sauces for dipping your crust.
2 slices of cheese pizza with caramelized onions and kraut-chi. The two slices of pizza were only $5. The toppings were $0.50 each. I liked the crust (soft, puffy, chewy edges but thin, floppy elsewhere) though there were a few areas that were too charred tasting. The crust was more flavorful because of the fermentation. The tomato sauce, made with organic Bianco di Napoli tomatoes, was tangy in a good way. The caramelized onions added a nice sweetness but the housemade kraut-chi was too salty. It was made with shredded cabbage.
I didn’t see any red pepper flakes or parmesan shakers on tables or anywhere in sight. Strange.
The restaurant is small but has a lot of cute things to look at, like an autographed Dodgers pennant, photos, and a diorama of superhero figures holding slices of pizza. It has a funky, homey feel. Cash is not accepted. Closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.

Housemade Dip Trio
Tumblr media
Whether you want to make something fast and easy for lunch or dinner, or you want to treat your friends and family to a special treat, this Housemade Dip Trio is the perfect combination of flavors! You can make them in just a few minutes and enjoy a delicious, nutritious snack that is full of protein, fiber, and healthy fats!
Hummus
Whether you’re looking to add an easy side dish to your dinner, a healthy lunchtime snack, or a delicious accompaniment for a variety of meats, hummus is sure to please. You can make it in your own kitchen in just 7 minutes.
Hummus is a traditional Middle Eastern dip made from cooked mashed chickpeas. It’s a great way to get more protein into your diet. You can also add a variety of flavors to make your hummus unique.
You can serve hummus in a deep bowl or on top of a soft-baked pita. You can also serve it with a drizzle of olive oil or a balsamic glaze. You can garnish it with fresh herbs and chopped sun-dried tomatoes. It’s also delicious as a salad dressing or spread on homemade tacos.
You can make hummus in a food processor or blender. You can also use a potato masher. This will give you a creamier consistency.
Salsa Verde
Texicali is a local Charlottean company that makes a trio of a kind of salsas. The trio includes three salsas in total, each made from a different vegetable. They’re a great way to add some zest to your next fiesta.
The three salsas, which can be paired with a wide variety of foods, are accompanied by three dips that aren’t afraid to make a statement. For example, the corn pico is made from fresh corn and tossed with lime juice.
The Salsa Verde is an example of a modern day version of the famous salsa made by Mexicans in Mexico. It is a tangy green salsa made from tomatillos, and it is definitely a winner. You’ll get to sample it on a platter bigger than your face!
The best part is you don’t need to know how to cook a tomatillo to make this dip. If you’re not a green chile connoisseur, you can use other types of chiles, such as poblanos and jalapenos. The secret is to roast them, which brings out their smoky flavor.
Jalapeno
Whether you are looking for a spicy dish to satisfy your inner Texan or a tasty appetizer to sate the appetite of your tastebuds, a jalapeno housemade dip trio is the way to go. Whether you serve it in a tortilla or just on its own, it’s sure to impress.
You’ll want to keep in mind that your jalapeno trio won’t last very long if you’re feeding a crowd. The aforementioned jalapeno trio is the star of the show, with corned beef, chicken and a dollop of hot sauce making appearances as well. You can make this a day in advance for a low-key dinner party or serve it up as the entrée for a night of opulent revelry.
The jalapeno trio is actually not a trinity but a trifecta. You’ll want to start by heating up the tomatillos and the jalapenos. If you’re a fan of the peppers, go ahead and cut the ribs off of the jalapenos for a spicy kick.
White Bean Dip
Whether you’re hosting a game day get together or just want a quick and easy appetizer, this White Bean Dip Trio is a great option. It’s also a healthy option.
To start, combine the drained cannellini beans in a food processor. Add the garlic and tahini, and process until smooth. You may need to add a splash of water to thin the mixture. If you want a little extra heat, add a pinch of cayenne pepper.
For a richer flavor, you can also add olive oil and sundried tomatoes to the dip. These add a bright red color and depth of flavor. You can also store the dip in the refrigerator for up to five days.
If you’re looking for a dip to serve alongside your meal, hummus is an easy and delicious option. You can serve it as a veggie sandwich spread or on a grain bowl. You can also serve it with chips or pita chips.

oh yeah here's something i am very interested to know. what is your most ideal, most perfect low, middle, and high budget wedding meals? mine is low: breakfast food buffet (with a bagel bar if we're gonna splurge) with mimosas and a layered bundt wedding cake, middle: fettuccine aurora (with either grilled chicken or sauteed onions and mushrooms to choose from), side salad bar, and sundried tomato and pesto bruschetta with a small bar and a standard wedding cake, and high: either i choose my own full menu of saffron chicken/tandoori chicken with mint chutney, mussels in a white wine sauce, buttery herbed rice pilaf, roasted vegetables, locally foraged, seasonal slaw-style salad with all housemade dressings, spanakopita, garlic naan/crostinis with hummus, tzatziki, baba ganoush, spinach dip (not fancy but i want it), muhummara, crab dip, and every other dip known to mankind, tomato basil bisque or wild rice hungarian mushroom soup with oven fresh olive bread and herb butter, a (vodka soaked) watermelon/mint/feta fruit salad, rose water rice pudding with cinnamon, crushed pistachios, and orange slivers, a FULL bar (whatever you think of, it's there), and one of those wedding cakes that look like the most expensive chandelier in the world turned upside down lol. or instead of all that i just hire Gordon Ramsay and Mihály Csikszentmihályi to meet with me and have them conduct an interview where they psychoanalyze me then work together create for me the absolutely perfect wedding menu that i could possibly ever want.

Tsukemen Aizen, 232 E 2nd St, Ste B, Los Angeles, CA 90012
Tumblr media
I’ve had tsukemen a couple of times and Tsukemen Aizen’s style is definitely different than the other places that I went to. The broth is fish-based, so it’s definitely “fishy” and the chashu isn’t thick cut but is paper thin and tender (reminded me of rare roast beef, only made with pork). The housemade broth features pork that’s cooked for 12 hours, chicken bones, vegetables, and mackerel bones. The broth is rich, thick, and deep in flavor.
The menu includes tsukemen (small or regular size, original or deluxe), tonkotsu ramen, ramen toppings, sides, dessert, and drinks. They have lunch combinations for $19.95.
Set B: Mapo tofu bowl & original tsukemen, regular size. The mapo tofu was very saucy and the tofu silken and very soft. It was mostly sauce – a spicy, flavorful sauce that tasted like it had bean paste in it. It was too salty. The tofu was accompanied by steamed white rice, half a soft-boiled egg, and fresh scallions. I wouldn’t get it again because it was too salty. The tsukemen broth wasn’t as salty, but I didn’t love the fishy flavor or the super thin chashu. The thick noodles were cold and chewy. The broth was hot, so dipping did help warm the noodles. The five condiments (fish powder, seaweed, spicy, garlic, jalapeno) were good too (and unique). There was one fish cake slice, one sheet of seaweed, and some cold cooked spinach. The portion seemed generous and the broth had pieces of meat (smoked pork?)
The restaurant opened last year and has an authentic feel and authentic décor. It has an ocean theme. The paper menu has instructions for how to enjoy your tsukemen. Service was friendly. Complimentary ice water was served.
