The Rising Cost of Home Insurance As Climate Change Worsens
Tumblr media
Increasing Frequency and Severity of Natural Disasters: Climate change has led to an escalation in the frequency and severity of natural disasters such as typhoons, floods, and landslides in the Philippines. These catastrophic events cause significant damage to homes and properties, resulting in higher insurance claims and increased home insurance costs.
Higher Rebuilding and Repair Costs : With climate change amplifying the intensity of natural disasters, the costs associated with rebuilding and repairing homes in the Philippines have skyrocketed. The need for stronger materials, updated building codes, and specialized expertise to mitigate future climate-related risks contributes to the increased expenses and subsequently impacts the price of houses.
Increased Risk Assessment: Insurance providers closely assess the risks associated with climate change in the Philippines when determining insurance premiums. They evaluate factors such as geographical location, vulnerability to extreme weather events, and proximity to flood-prone areas or landslide-prone regions. Properties in high-risk areas in the Philippines are more likely to experience significant premium hikes due to the increased likelihood of climate-related damages.
Evolving Insurance Models: The evolving landscape of climate change-related risks in the Philippines has prompted insurers to reassess their underwriting models. Traditional actuarial tables and historical data may no longer accurately predict the potential risks and losses associated with climate change. This adjustment in risk assessment often leads to revised premiums to account for the uncertainty and heightened exposure to climate-related perils.
Mitigation and Adaptation Efforts: Insurance companies in the Philippines are increasingly encouraging policyholders to adopt mitigation and adaptation measures to minimize potential damages from climate-related events. This can include installing storm shutters, reinforcing structures, improving drainage systems, or implementing measures to mitigate flood risks. Some insurers offer premium discounts or incentives for policyholders who take proactive steps towards risk reduction.
Importance of Climate Resilience Planning: To combat the escalating costs of home insurance in the Philippines, homeowners are advised to prioritize climate resilience planning. This involves understanding the unique climate-related risks in the Philippines, implementing appropriate safeguards, and investing in resilient infrastructure and construction practices. By taking proactive measures, homeowners can potentially mitigate insurance premium increases and better protect their properties.
Considerations When Buying Homes: Prospective homebuyers in the Philippines should consider the location and vulnerability of the property to climate-related risks when purchasing a house. Conducting thorough research, engaging professional inspections, and evaluating insurance options are essential steps to make informed decisions and ensure adequate protection in the face of climate change challenges.
Conclusion: The rising costs of home insurance in the Philippines are a clear reflection of the intensifying effects of climate change. As extreme weather events become more frequent and severe, insurance companies face increased risks and expenses, leading to higher premiums for homeowners. By understanding the link between climate change and rising insurance costs, individuals in the Philippines can work towards building a more resilient and sustainable future while considering these factors when buying homes.

🛑🚨‼️ATTENTION PLEASE, JUST A QUICK READ‼️🚨🛑
hi im angie (she/they)! im a lesbian from the philippines. i’ve been a part of so many fandoms but im usually a silent like-r, reblogger, and supporter. i also make art at my sideblog, @angiedoesthingss. but now, im truly desperate and is currently asking for your help.
yesterday, after years of abuse from our narcissistic, homophobic grandma, i finally fought back and did my best to protect my mother and sister. it was a disaster and my grandma threatened us to leave her house (long story short, we live under her roof). i’ve always planned to move, but now, i need to bring my family to safety as soon as possible too.
we need to move for our safety and happiness by the first quarter of 2025. we’re planning to move back to our childhood home that we’ve currently put up for rent (the current renter is leaving soon - no worries). im planning to bring along my mom, my sister, our two cats and dog with me.
the thing is, im worried we wont be able to move because our funds have been so low. recently, i lost my main job because my boss was a creep. i only have a part time job now that only pays me $170 a month which is barely enough for me, much less my family. my sister just graduated college so she doesn’t have a job yet and my mom can’t get a job because it stresses and tires her out (she also deals with mental health problems - a result of this unstable environment).
my goal is to at least reach $500 to ensure that we’ll have enough money for the move and to sustain us for the next couple of months while we adjust to this new environment and heal. i would be so grateful and would appreciate any amount you can give for me and my family.
it’s truly crazy how things can just change from one day to the next. a day before that altercation, i was cooking cordon bleu with my girlfriend at their house, watching arcane s2 act 1 - literally in lesbian bliss. and now im on a mission to save me and my family, to give all of us the freedom and life we deserve.
thank you for reading so far! and thank you so much for donating! im thankful too for any likes or reblogs you can give me to spread my little post. im hoping it will reach so many of you. i really hope we get to accomplish this goal.
i’ll be sure to keep updating this post as we reach certain milestones, maybe even reblogging with pictures of our pets! if youre from the philippines as well and would like to help, you can pm me and i’ll send you my GCASH information! again, thank you so much, i cant thank you, reader, enough!
(please click the photo for the link 🥹 if that doesnt work click here! thank you so much)

Chinatown rises.
One end of the Parian, an Arrabales that serves as the chief residence of San Simeon's Chinese community. Many have lived there for generations and had turned what was once a ghetto into a place with palatial houses... that they promptly turned into apartments for rent.
The temple-like structure with the Christian base game mausoleum is, in fact, a redo of the Chinese cemetery, made based on feedback from @thebleedingwoodland and inspired by aerial photos of the Manila Chinese cemetery. The change was inspired by what I feel were anachronisms in the way I built the family mausoleums, which would've not have been house-like until the late 19th and early 20th centuries. I also created a temple inspired by (but not visually similar to) a real one from the 19th Century that once stood in the Manila Chinese Cemetery but had since been demolished. The fact that the Christian mausoleum is so color-dissonant to the rest of the cemetery is making me think I should just build the chapel myself or use a recolorable rabbit hole.
A few details under the cut:
Tumblr media
Like in some of my other projects, I added remains in some of the graves in the form of skeletons.
Tumblr media
The graves were based in part on Chinese cemetery graves in Indonesia and Malaysia, which based on an aerial photo of the Manila cemetery was also the case in the Philippines at one point before (at least in Manila) the families started building mausoleums (bleedingwoodland was able to find me pics of some older examples, so retained exactly one for now.)
The trend of mausoleums started in the early 20th century as a way of shielding the families visiting from the weather during sacred holidays like the Qingming festival or All Souls' Day. Right now, only one gravesite has such a roof and it isn't too elaborate; a much more modern version would have little space left for any flat graves and have a variety of styles, including European-styled graves.

In 1913, a year before the Panama Canal was completed, the journalist Frederic J. Haskin wrote that “the conquest of the Isthmian barrier was the conquest of the mosquito.” This was a period when America [had] [...] by 1902 taken control of Cuba, Puerto Rico, the Philippines, and Guam. [...] The connection between mosquito control and the United States’ imperial conquest can be seen in the work of William C. Gorgas, the Alabama-born Army surgeon who led efforts to eradicate yellow fever and malaria-both mosquito-borne diseases-during the first US occupation of Cuba (1898-1902) and was subsequently appointed Chief Sanitary Officer of in Panama. [...] Gorgas claimed that he had “made sanitary discoveries that will enable man to return [...] and again live and develop in his natural home, the tropics.” [...] In particular, the dwellings erected for the Isthmian Canal Commission (ICC) conjoined the management of mosquitos with manipulating the interactions between people of different races and social classes. [...]
Gorgas arrived in Panama in 1904 [...]. Gorgas and others saw sanitation work as indistinguishable from the military occupation in Cuba and the success of the canal construction in Panama. [...] Spraying was largely carried out by mosquito brigades, which checked households for compliance [...]. But [...] these brigades also policed the activity of local residents. [...]
---
There was much debate not only about who to enlist to build the canal, but also how to prevent organized resistance and revolt among them.
As one official testified to the US congress in 1906, “there must be on the Isthmus a surplusage of labor. Otherwise, we will have interminable strikes.” [...]
Furthermore, rather than one vulnerable workforce, Chief Engineer John Stevens believed that having several different nationalities and ethnicities would be easier to divide and create competition, compelling them to work harder.
In order to do this, the ICC created a segregated, dual payment system: the gold and silver rolls. [...] [W]hite workers from the US were mostly hired for skilled positions and received payment in gold. These “gold-roll” employees could spend leisure time in segregated clubs [...]. West Indians and Black workers from the United States were mostly assigned to the silver roll. [...]
[T]he gold- and silver-roll system constituted an apartheid society, a perverse reincarnation of the contemporary Jim Crow system that was in full effect at the time in the United States. [...]
---
Although the ICC offered free housing to all its gold-roll employees, silver-roll employees paid rent. [...] As late as 1910, Galician workers on the silver roll were still living in boxcars ventilated only by a few small punched openings. [...] When West Indians requested basic amenities like blankets and shelter to keep their clothes from being soaked in the rain, the US government responded that they didn’t even need sheds. [...] For white workers [...] Type 13 [housing types] not only features a wraparound screened porch as a circulation space, but also a prominent band of empty space surrounding the enclosed bedrooms [...].
The distinctions associated with the categorical, systematic definition of different domestic architecture for different classes of people follows a history of typology in architecture and criminology that was closely associated with scientific racism, social Darwinism [...].
George W. Goethals, who took over as Chief Engineer of the project from Stevens in 1907, responded to requests for mosquito nets and screens for West Indians by repeating a common and racist misunderstanding: “It is generally admitted … [t]hat the colored people are immune.” Yet in 1912, “as many as two-thirds of all West Indians reported sick or required medical attention … [m]ost of them catching malaria several times [...].”
---
Structured by prejudice, anti-mosquito architecture allowed malaria to continue spreading while reinforcing racial hierarchies. [...] US imperial concepts about the tropics as a place [...] “[...] divided the civilized, temperate North from the heat, humidity and backwardness of the tropics.” [...] While managing the laborers through their relationship to insects -- and each other -- this low-cost architecture was crucial in the broader effort to turn the Isthmus into an imperial outpost and render the landscape tropical.

Leonora
by Sugarcane
youtube
New translation! This time I just felt like translating and talking about this song because I genuinely love talking about the little nuances here. It's one of the more recent videos that really pulled me back into OPM. I explain a lot of the nuances and the historical background below + some personal stories related to it too.
Leonora
This serenade I'm offering, for the maiden with unparalleled beauty, with the scent of roses If tricky fate would wish it I won't let it disappear
This letter I'm hoping your eyes would read I'm ready to do everything, I'll even court your family I've only now felt such eternal awe All I wish for is
The two of us be together at the end and at the beginning Proving that first love does last
How many poems has it been, why is it getting unnoticed? My only wish, at the end you'll be with me If it's possible, until the end of time I will never let you go forever
Our sweet past relationship, where'd it go? (I keep looking for you, whoa) How come between us, I'm the only one left? (I wish I could still see you) Your beautiful voice, would I still hear it? Ready to go through life[1] even if you're not here anymore
Wherever you are, may you be happy now (let you go free, whoa) Even if we won't be together anymore (I still love you) Just please listen to my wish that you would take care Oh, Leonora my love, ah
Alternative Translations and Additional Context
Ready to go through - this is just the literal translation of the line but contextually it's closer to the lyric I used or something close to "Ready to go through everything".
The song is based on the real-life historical figure Leonor Rivera-Kipping, one of the many lovers of the Philippine National hero José Rizal. The two were childhood sweethearts, however, due to Rizal traveling to Europe to study and Leonor's mother Silvestra Bauzon not liking how political he was while favoring an Englishman named Henry Charles Kipping so Silvestra and Kipping kept the letters that Rizal sent to Leonor. This made her think that she was abandoned and later on married Kipping instead (Quirino, 2015).
On the night of her wedding, she found the letters and in her frustration tore them apart sewing some of them on the hem of her wedding dress and burnt the others. After her marriage to Kipping, she vowed to never play the piano again. She died at 26 in childbirth alongside her newborn daughter, after which Kipping abandoned their only living son and traveled back to England just to die three years later, no mention of Leonor ever being his wife (Quirino, 2015).
Her final wish before her death was to be buried with the silver box that contained the ashes of Rizal's letters (Martinez-Clemente, 2011). Sadly, her grave was a casualty during the war and her remains and her grave site has been lost forever (Quirino, 2015).
Leonor serves as the inspiration for the character of Maria Clara in Rizal's acclaimed novels that Filipinos are mandated to learn at school Noli Me Tangere and its sequel El Filibusterismo. Maria Clara is the female love interest of the series protagonist Crisostomo Ibarra and the two have a severely tragic love story due to the politics surrounding Ibarra and both of their relationships.
From my understanding of the books, Leonor may also have been the inspiration for the El Filibusterismo character Paulita Gomez who abandons her relationship with her lover, one of the leading characters named Isagani, after he was accused of being an insurrectionist despite being innocent. At the end of the story, Paulita marries someone else and Isagani watches the reception from outside her house.
Random Trivia
The place this music video was shot is actually a historical house of another one of Rizal's many lovers Segunda Katigbak! The place is called Casa Segunda and is located in Lipa City, Batangas. My classmates and I visited the place and rented it out for a project a couple of years back.
Another fun fact is that the group most likely didn't actually play the piano in the house because they weren't allowed to considering how old it is. It's an antique and it was already falling apart when we went there way before this video was probably shot. That's the reason for them keeping the camera away from the keys.
They're also not allowed to sit on the antique seat in front of the piano because of how fragile it was and it already was falling apart too when we went there. We ignored this for one of our shoots and did it quickly before anyone could notice, but they may have just positioned the camera so they don't have to show them sitting down on the chair.
We found a random kitten in the house? I don't know what happened to it. It wasn't outside either, it was like inside one of the bedrooms. I don't know if the staff or family owned it but it did look like a stray.
Some of my classmates still hasn't paid me back for the rent we were supposed to split. It isn't a fun fact, I'm just a little salty.
Original Lyrics

MANILA, Philippines (AP) — A group led by left-wing activists filed a second impeachment complaint against the Philippine vice president on Wednesday over her alleged misuse of government funds and demanded that she be permanently barred from holding public office.
The impeachment complaint filed by at least 74 activists, including human rights, labor and student leaders, before the House of Representatives reflects the extent of the political hostilities faced by Vice President Sara Duterte. She did not immediately comment on the new impeachment complaint or an earlier one filed Monday.
Duterte, a 46-year-old lawyer, is the daughter of also-controversial former President Rodrigo Duterte, who oversaw a bloody anti-drug crackdown while in office. The killing of thousands of suspects during the crackdown is being investigated by the International Criminal Court as a possible crime against humanity.
Her No. 1 political adversary has been President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., whom she publicly threatened with death in a Nov. 23 online news conference.
Government investigators have launched a criminal investigation into her threat against the president, his wife and the speaker of the House of Representatives, a cousin and ally of Marcos. Duterte has tried to walk back her comments by saying they were not a direct death threat but rather an expression of concern for her own safety.
The complaint filed Wednesday accused the vice president of “betrayal of public trust over the illegal use and mishandling of 612.5 million pesos ($10.3 million) in confidential funds,” according to a statement by the complainants.
The impeachment complaint said that in addition to the alleged misuse of the confidential and intelligence funds, the vice president and her staff allegedly tried to cover up the irregularities by submitting fabricated reports, receipts and documents to the Commission on Audit and deliberately obstructing a congressional investigation.
It said that in December 2022, the vice president’s office spent 125 million pesos ($2 million) in 11 days during the Christmas holidays for suspicious expenditures, including renting “safe houses,” paying for unspecified confidential information and financing rewards, which it said were not clearly explained by Duterte.
“Wasting the confidential funds is a big betrayal of the people,” said Liza Maza, a leading complainant from the Makabayan political coalition. “This is not just a simple technical violation but a systematic misuse and robbery of public funds.”
“The impeachment is the antidote to impunity,” said Renato Reyes of Bayan, another left-wing political coalition. “Citizens and taxpayers need to hold public officials accountable.”
On Monday, a group of civil society activists, including Roman Catholic priests and pro-democracy activists, filed an initial impeachment case that contained about 24 alleged crimes and irregularities, including her death threats against Marcos and her alleged role in the extra-judicial killings of drug suspects under her father’s crackdown. She was also accused of failing to stand up to Chinese aggression in the disputed South China Sea.
The impeachment complaints will be examined by the House of Representatives, which is dominated by allies of Marcos and his cousin and key backer, House Speaker Martin Romualdez, who also has been politically at odds with the vice president.
The process could take weeks or months. Congress is to start its Christmas recess on Dec. 20 and resume on Jan. 13. Many legislators will then start campaigning for reelection ahead of the May 12 midterm elections.
The House has been investigating the alleged misuse of confidential and intelligence funds received by Duterte’s offices as vice president and education secretary. She has since left the education post.
She has refused to respond to questions in detail in tense televised hearings. Philippine police have filed criminal complaints against Duterte and her security staff for allegedly assaulting authorities and disobeying orders in an altercation in Congress over the brief detention of her chief of staff, who was accused of hampering the congressional inquiry into the alleged misuse of funds.
The National Bureau of Investigation subpoenaed Duterte to face investigators on Dec. 11 about her threats against the president.
Marcos and Duterte won landslide victories as running mates in the 2022 election but have since fallen out over key differences. The two offices are elected separately in the Philippines, which has resulted in rivals occupying the country’s top political posts.

LETTERS FROM AN AMERICAN
January 4, 2024
HEATHER COX RICHARDSON
JAN 5, 2024
The Democrats on the House Oversight Committee today released a 156-page report showing that when he was in the presidency, Trump received at least $7.8 million from 20 different governments, including those of China, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Kuwait, and Malaysia, through businesses he owned.
The Democrats brought receipts.
According to the report—and the documents from Trump’s former accounting firm Mazars that are attached to it—the People’s Republic of China and companies substantially controlled by the PRC government paid at least $5,572,548 to Trump-owned properties while Trump was in office; Saudi Arabia paid at least $615,422; Qatar paid at least $465,744; Kuwait paid at least $300,000; India paid at least $282,764; Malaysia paid at least $248,962; Afghanistan paid at least $154,750; the Philippines paid at least $74,810; the United Arab Emirates paid at least $65,225. The list went on and on.
The committee Democrats explained that these payments were likely only a fraction of the actual money exchanged, since they cover only four of more than 500 entities Trump owned at the time. When the Republicans took control of the House of Representatives in January 2023, Oversight Committee chair James Comer (R-KY) stopped the investigation before Mazars had produced the documents the committee had asked for when Democrats were in charge of it. Those records included documents relating to Russia, South Korea, South Africa, and Brazil.
Trump fought hard against the production of these documents, dragging out the court fight until September 2022. The committee worked on them for just four months before voters put Republicans in charge of the House and the investigation stopped.
These are the first hard numbers that show how foreign governments funneled money to the president while policies involving their countries were in front of him. The report notes, for example, that Trump refused to impose sanctions on Chinese banks that were helping the North Korean government; one of those banks was paying him close to $2 million in rent annually for commercial office space in Trump Tower.
The first article of the U.S. Constitution reads: “[N]o Person holding any Office of Profit or Trust under [the United States], shall, without the Consent of the Congress, accept of any present, Emolument [that is, salary, fee, or profit], Office, or Title, of any kind whatever, from any King, Prince, or foreign State.”
The report also contrasted powerfully with the attempt of Republicans on the Oversight Committee, led by Comer, to argue that Democratic Joe Biden has corruptly profited from the presidency.
In the Washington Post on December 26, 2023, Philip Bump noted that just after voters elected a Republican majority, Comer told the Washington Post that as soon as he was in charge of the Oversight Committee, he would use his power to “determine if this president and this White House are compromised because of the millions of dollars that his family has received from our adversaries in China, Russia and Ukraine.”
For the past year, while he and the committee have made a number of highly misleading statements to make it sound as if there are Biden family businesses involving the president (there are not) and the president was involved in them (he was not), their claims were never backed by any evidence. Bump noted in a piece on December 14, 2023, for example, that Comer told Fox News Channel personality Maria Bartiromo that “the Bidens” have “taken in” more than $24 million. In fact, Bump explained, Biden’s son Hunter and his business partners did receive such payments, but most of the money went to the business partners. About $7.5 million of it went to Hunter Biden. There is no evidence that any of it went to Joe Biden.
All of the committee’s claims have similar reality checks. Jonathan Yerushalmy of The Guardian wrote that after nearly 40,000 pages of bank records and dozens of hours of testimony, “no evidence has emerged that Biden acted corruptly or accepted bribes in his current or previous role.”
Still, the constant hyping of their claims on right-wing media led then–House speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) to authorize an impeachment inquiry in mid-September, and in mid-December, Republicans in the House formalized the inquiry.
There is more behind the attack on Biden than simply trying to even the score between him and Trump—who remains angry at his impeachments and has demanded Republicans retaliate—or to smear Biden through an “investigation,” which has been a standard technique of the Republicans since the mid-1990s.
Claiming that Biden is as corrupt as Trump undermines faith in our democracy. After all, if everyone is a crook, why does it matter which one is in office? And what makes American democracy any different from the authoritarian systems of Russia or Hungary or Venezuela, where leaders grab what they can for themselves and their followers?
Democracies are different from authoritarian governments because they have laws to prevent the corruption in which it appears Trump engaged. The fact that Republicans refuse to hold their own party members accountable to those laws while smearing their opponents says far more about them than it does about the nature of democracy.
It does, though, highlight that our democracy is in danger.

Apartment infodump!🌤
Went around my neighborhood this afternoon! It's a Lazy Sunday so I just wanna infodump a bit about how I imagine Julianne's apartment would look like.
I've always imagined that it would be at the other edge of town close to another forest. There are still some stores and essential businesses for renters in that area but it's mostly a clump of apartment buildings or commercial buildings for small offices and such (like printing shops, probably the publishing house for Woodbrook Wanderer, and niche shops).
Tumblr media
It's the part of town people don't typically end up in unless they're out of options for places to be in. This is probably the area where newcomers come to rent or buy spaces.
Meanwhile on the other side of the town is the residential area where the families who've stayed in Woodbrook are ever since. They have fairly nicer houses and maybe a few houses are rental or some are small-scale apartments (like an example I'll show in a second). I'll bet that land or even the cost to build a house there is steep since it is a very nice/safe community. Perhaps this is gonna be explored a lot more through a commercial angle in Rite Of Spring
Tumblr media
Keep in mind I live in the Philippines so I have No Clue if what I'm saying will contextually make sense. I live in a village that's close to the city but it's still rural enough to not be fully commercialized. Sure, we have a few restaurants and small coffee shops in the village but there are still patches of land with trees, greenery, and probably some feral colonies lol
It's mostly residential space with a basketball gym and a chapel at the entrance.
I've always thought that Julianne's apartment would look somewhere between this apartment in the village and this commercial building in Quezon City I used to frequent.

Looking at the kind of buildings built in Woodbrook, it would be more realistic if it would be closer to the building on the right. However, I like the idea that it would maybe look smaller and a bit more intimate like the one on the right.
I think having the apartment Julianne lives in be 4 floors of livable space be a good compromise. After all, that's what Julianne was after, a cheap space she can buy and live in as long as it's in Woodbrook. It would be smaller, and some areas would be closed off but I imagine that the first floor and lobby look similar to this. It kind of looks like a budget beach resort's lodges but that's part of the charm. It reminds Julianne of her home.

The 2nd floor is a common living space with a television set, a shelf of rotating books for people who want to borrow or leave books, couches, a phonograph/radio for music, and a big kitchen for people who need to cook and for those who don't have a kitchen in their apartments. Julianne has a mini stove and a fridge and a sink but not an oven so if she wants to bake, she has to compute to make enough for her neighbors or at least the landlady plus herself and sam.
3rd-4th is where the other apartments are so renters/people who bought a space stay there. Julianne lives at the 4th floor. Also all of you live next door in the 4th hehe :) Wren pointed out its like Tomodachi Life Apartments!
5th floor is the rooftop so its just an open space. People can hang out there if they want and Julianne goes up there to think sometimes or draw on the concrete with chalk.
Being that its near the forest, the apartment is cool and there's good air circulation around that some days you don't even need an electric fan or air conditioning. The entrance has some plants and some 1st floor renters have small gardens on their windows or by their doors. Grass and wild flowers grow on the sidewalk.
Tumblr media
It really is the perfect place to live in. Friendly neighbors. A bustling sweet town with great small businesses. Romance around the corner!
Also on my walk today I saw Julianne hehehe
