Leonora
by Sugarcane
youtube
New translation! This time I just felt like translating and talking about this song because I genuinely love talking about the little nuances here. It's one of the more recent videos that really pulled me back into OPM. I explain a lot of the nuances and the historical background below + some personal stories related to it too.
Leonora
This serenade I'm offering, for the maiden with unparalleled beauty, with the scent of roses If tricky fate would wish it I won't let it disappear
This letter I'm hoping your eyes would read I'm ready to do everything, I'll even court your family I've only now felt such eternal awe All I wish for is
The two of us be together at the end and at the beginning Proving that first love does last
How many poems has it been, why is it getting unnoticed? My only wish, at the end you'll be with me If it's possible, until the end of time I will never let you go forever
Our sweet past relationship, where'd it go? (I keep looking for you, whoa) How come between us, I'm the only one left? (I wish I could still see you) Your beautiful voice, would I still hear it? Ready to go through life[1] even if you're not here anymore
Wherever you are, may you be happy now (let you go free, whoa) Even if we won't be together anymore (I still love you) Just please listen to my wish that you would take care Oh, Leonora my love, ah
Alternative Translations and Additional Context
Ready to go through - this is just the literal translation of the line but contextually it's closer to the lyric I used or something close to "Ready to go through everything".
The song is based on the real-life historical figure Leonor Rivera-Kipping, one of the many lovers of the Philippine National hero José Rizal. The two were childhood sweethearts, however, due to Rizal traveling to Europe to study and Leonor's mother Silvestra Bauzon not liking how political he was while favoring an Englishman named Henry Charles Kipping so Silvestra and Kipping kept the letters that Rizal sent to Leonor. This made her think that she was abandoned and later on married Kipping instead (Quirino, 2015).
On the night of her wedding, she found the letters and in her frustration tore them apart sewing some of them on the hem of her wedding dress and burnt the others. After her marriage to Kipping, she vowed to never play the piano again. She died at 26 in childbirth alongside her newborn daughter, after which Kipping abandoned their only living son and traveled back to England just to die three years later, no mention of Leonor ever being his wife (Quirino, 2015).
Her final wish before her death was to be buried with the silver box that contained the ashes of Rizal's letters (Martinez-Clemente, 2011). Sadly, her grave was a casualty during the war and her remains and her grave site has been lost forever (Quirino, 2015).
Leonor serves as the inspiration for the character of Maria Clara in Rizal's acclaimed novels that Filipinos are mandated to learn at school Noli Me Tangere and its sequel El Filibusterismo. Maria Clara is the female love interest of the series protagonist Crisostomo Ibarra and the two have a severely tragic love story due to the politics surrounding Ibarra and both of their relationships.
From my understanding of the books, Leonor may also have been the inspiration for the El Filibusterismo character Paulita Gomez who abandons her relationship with her lover, one of the leading characters named Isagani, after he was accused of being an insurrectionist despite being innocent. At the end of the story, Paulita marries someone else and Isagani watches the reception from outside her house.
Random Trivia
The place this music video was shot is actually a historical house of another one of Rizal's many lovers Segunda Katigbak! The place is called Casa Segunda and is located in Lipa City, Batangas. My classmates and I visited the place and rented it out for a project a couple of years back.
Another fun fact is that the group most likely didn't actually play the piano in the house because they weren't allowed to considering how old it is. It's an antique and it was already falling apart when we went there way before this video was probably shot. That's the reason for them keeping the camera away from the keys.
They're also not allowed to sit on the antique seat in front of the piano because of how fragile it was and it already was falling apart too when we went there. We ignored this for one of our shoots and did it quickly before anyone could notice, but they may have just positioned the camera so they don't have to show them sitting down on the chair.
We found a random kitten in the house? I don't know what happened to it. It wasn't outside either, it was like inside one of the bedrooms. I don't know if the staff or family owned it but it did look like a stray.
Some of my classmates still hasn't paid me back for the rent we were supposed to split. It isn't a fun fact, I'm just a little salty.
Original Lyrics

Am I learning baybayin calligraphy to test a book theory for 1 historically accurate throwaway detail in SAINTS OF STORM AND SORROW? 🫣 Maybe?
And maybe I just spent 3 hours collecting banana leaves from a condemned apartment building, finding Tagalog Tanaga poems that fit thematically with my novel, SAINTS OF STORM AND SORROW translating the tagalog into baybayin symbols then testing writing implements and copying out 4 different sheets to be stored in different environments to test the long term legibility of said poems 🤣 that's also possible!
But in my defense nowhere on the internet was willing to tell me more than the Wikipedia single paragraph of yes South East Asia and the Philippines used banana leaves as a writing surface pre-colonization. So really this was for science. I will likely be writing up a full blog post detailing my recent adventure into historical recreation and banana leaves, once I've finished using all my extra banana leaves to make suman 😋
Happy Filipino American History month 🇵🇭

HiruSena ft. Philippine jeepneys (the most common method of transportation here)
CONTEXT: When jeeps are full during rush hour, it's normal to see two to four men hanging onto the back of the jeep by the railings. This shit is dangerous, because if you lose your grip while the jeep is moving, you'll get into an accident.
This is also something that both Hiruma and Sena would definitely do.
RIP HiruSena, you would have loved commuting via clinging onto jeeps like your life depends on it (and it does)
HiruSena Jeep series: (1/2)

EDIT: It has a playlist now on YouTube and Spotify!

I've always wondered why certain names are chosen for characters. Is there some inherent meaning in their names or did you just like it. So what's in this case?
It varies between both i guess!
im kinda tragic with character names and have this habit of naming characters after objects or food or whatever i think is funniest in the moment. Its how we have abi being the only one from unconscious effort with a normal name while everyone else is named like prawn or marzipan
I’m also really fond of naming schemes for groups of characters, so sometimes i try to follow some kind of theme when i have to name more than one (the neighborhood kids from clover’s memories do have names and theyre all plant based to go with clover’s, lilac included).
And then other times i just gather some friends around a character and we stare at them and throw out a bunch of names that fits their vibe until something sticks (this is what happened with my fallen kid designs)

Huling Sayaw (ft. Kyla) Translation
by Kamikazee (En. Last Dance)
youtube
Third translation here and this one is extremely nostalgic! Huling Sayaw is part of Kamikazee's Romantico series and is part of a longer song series which includes their other songs Halik and Tagpuan. This was extremely popular during my junior high school and would often get most of the crowd singing and drumming along. I remember an indie band had come to perform in our school for an event and they did a cover of this song and some 600 students from our batch sang along. This is honestly the song for your doomed ships.
Last Dance
This is our final moment We won't make anymore mistakes Because there's no tomorrow, let's savor this[1], this is the end We might need to go home
Hold my hand before we separate We'll give our all, our all
Goodbye to our last dance Turns out heaven has an end That's why we'll let go at the same time In our last dance
Didn't notice that the night's gotten late (the night's gotten late) But I don't want to rush (don't you rush) How sweet, how good[2], but this is the last We might need to go home
Hold my hand before we separate We'll give our all, our all
Goodbye to our last dance Turns out heaven has an end That's why we'll let go at the same time In our last dance
Goodbye to our last dance (goodbye to our) Turns out heaven has an end (last dance) That's why we'll let go at the same time In our last dance
Goodbye to our last dance Turns out heaven has an end That's why we'll let go at the same time In our last dance
Alternate Translations and Additional Context
Let's make the most of this - This is the more literal translation of "sulitin natin" but it was too long for the lyric.
How delicious - this is the more literal translation of this lyric but it doesn't sound right. The meaning of the lyric is closer to what I used.
Original Lyrics
Ito na ang ating huling sandali 'Di na tayo magkakamali Kasi wala nang bukas, sulitin natin, ito na ang wakas Kailangan na yata nating umuwi
Hawakan mo aking kamay bago tayo maghiwalay Lahat-lahat ibibigay, lahat-lahat
Hawakan mo aking kamay bago tayo maghiwalay Lahat-lahat ibibigay, lahat-lahat
Paalam sa 'ting huling sayaw May dulo pala ang langit Kaya't sabay tayong bibitaw Sa ating huling sayaw Paalam sa 'ting huling sayaw (paalam na sa 'ting) May dulo pala ang langit (huling sayaw) Kaya't sabay tayong bibitaw Sa ating huling sayaw Paalam sa 'ting huling sayaw May dulo pala ang langit Kaya't sabay tayong bibitaw Sa ating huling sayaw

Akechi's Traitor Speech Translated to Filipino:
Pure Translation:
Teleserye Version(4):
Teammates!? Friends!? To hell with that! Bakit ako inferior sa 'yo!? I was extremely particular sa aking buhay, sa aking grades, sa aking public image! So someone would want me around! Ako ay isang ace detective! Isang celebrity! But you… You're just some criminal trash living in an attic!? So how!? How does someone na tulad mo have things na I don't!? How can such a worthless piece of trash be more special than me!?
Translation notes under the cut
There's no specific equivalent I could find for "To hell with that!" so I instead opted for him to call everyone "Punyeta" instead since that feels appropriate for the situation.
I could've used celebrity here too because that is a word used here but I wanted to try my hand in at least finding a somewhat equivalent thing before resorting to just an actual English word so I used "tanyag na tao" or literally "famous person"
There's no exact word that translates to "attic" in Filipino so I instead opted to use "kisame" or ceiling which is honestly a funnier visual.
The Teleserye version is how I would imagine the speech if it was said in a typical teleserye which would mean a lot, and I mean A LOT of English and dramatic pauses. This was actually the first translation I did because I thought it would sound funny.

More Filipino dub Good Omens goodness! The first one I talked about is here.
Another example in S2E4 is when Crowley thanks Aziraphale for agreeing to do the magic show, and Aziraphale replies - with some hesitation in the middle of his sentence - that "that's what... friends... are for."
In the Filipino dub, Aziraphale says "ganoon ang... magka... ibigan."
But unlike in the original English script, the pauses in the sentence - to convey hesitation - are not between words. The Filipino dub instead has Aziraphale split a word into two. The word, when pronounced correctly, is "magkaibigan", but Aziraphale splits the word into "magka" and "ibigan". In my opinion, this is more than just a choice in diction.
"Friend", in Tagalog, is translated to "kaibigan", whose root word is "ibig", which means "love".
So, when the word is split the way Aziraphale stated it in the dub, it becomes another word: ka-ibigan. And it changes meaning from "friend" to "lover".

asked my friend to translate more voicelines from cn to eng and apparently xingqiu never addresses chongyun w a nickname ("dear') in cn in his voiceline about him. if anything he just goes "SIGH this guy-" which i think is funny as hell. i think the "ah, dear chongyun" was supposed to be more sarcastic than affectionate hahaha. i think xingqiu holds chongyun dear to him regardless (considering their canon interactions etc) but this just makes xingqiu a lot cheekier and their dynamic funnier. SIGH this guy 🙄
