A canon compliant guide of Bruce Wayne’s officially adopted children

I noticed there has been some confusion about who all in the BatFam is actually legally adopted by Bruce Wayne so I thought I’d try and help clear some things up.

(Full disclosure you can of course headcanon whatever you like, I made this is strictly to help newer fans know what is actually canon💕)

Dick Grayson: Adopted

(Batman: Gotham Knights #17 and Batman #600)

Many fans argue over whether or not Dick is officially adopted, many saying it was never official and he is still just his ward.

Though he does admittedly usually spend the majority of his actual childhood as a ward, Bruce ends up officially adopting Dick as his son(as I have explained before here)in multiple timelines

Barbara Gordon: Not Adopted

(Batgirl and the Birds Of Prey Rebirth)

There was never a need for Barbara to be adopted because she still has a Dad. She is however still very much in the BatFamily and has trained under and with Bruce

Jason Todd: Adopted

(The New Titans (1988) #55 and Batman: A Lonely Place of Dying)

Now I couldn’t track down a comic where we actually get to see Bruce adopt Jason, but there are plenty of instances in which his adoption is referenced -including but not limited to these two- throughout several timelines and reboots

Cassandra Cain: Adopted

(Batgirl 2008 #6)

Now this one is a bit more debatable as aside from this one instance, Cass’ adoption is never really mentioned again even after the timeline gets rebooted. Still the general consensus is that Cassandra’s adoption is considered canon.

Tim Drake: Adopted

(Batman #654 and Red Robin #4)

Though Tim declines Bruce’s offer of being adopted at first, we get to see Bruce adopt Tim as his son about a year or so later. His adoption is also referenced across multiple reboots

Stephanie Brown: Not Adopted

(Batgirls #13, Robin (1993) #174, and Robin (1993) #126)

Now the main reason Stephanie is not and probably will not be adopted is because both her parents are alive. While her Dad is a villain and out of the picture, her mother is a nurse and fully capable of taking care of her.

Bruce does however train her during her brief stint as Robin and much like Barbara she is no less apart of the BatFamily, she’s just not in the Wayne Family

Duke Thomas: Not Adopted (technically)

(All Star Batman #1 and Batman & the Signal #3)

Now Duke is never officially adopted because technically his parents are alive just insane due to Joker’s toxin of which there is no cure. However Bruce does take him in and let him stay at the manor and it is heavily implied he becomes Duke’s foster parent so do with that what you will

Damian Wayne: Not Adopted/Biological child

(Batman and Robin (2011) #0)

Damian is Bruce’s one and only biological child -of the main canon- and therefore does not need to be adopted because you don’t need to adopt your own child

Can bugs get fat? I know they can molt, but can a bug eat so much between molts that it gets too big for its exoskeleton and its too soon to molt again? Also is it possible for a bug to over eat and make themselves ill or get a tummy ache?

I don't know about making them feel ill (you'd have to ask them), but some can eat too much or store too much fat, especially those in captivity that are fed too frequently or fed an improper diet. In the wild, most bugs wouldn't have the opportunity to eat enough to get overly fat, but sometimes due to parasites or genetics, they can retain too much fat. The exoskeleton of adult bugs allows for some expansion between molts, but there is a limit. Too much fat would mostly mean it's just packed tighter into the same area inside the exoskeleton. This can be dangerous - pet spiders come to mind. If they're fed too frequently and their abdomen gets too distended, they are much more prone to fall injuries that may rupture the abdomen. I also read an article some time ago about wild dragonflies that were infected with a specific parasite that made them retain too much fat and they then had less success mating. Larvae like caterpillars on the other hand have much more leeway in terms of how much they can grow between molts - their exoskeleton is much stretchier to accommodate the necessary growth, and they store fat/energy mostly for use in pupation or for use in the adult form after pupation, especially if it's one of the species that don't eat as adults so they have to get all their energy as larvae.

the thing about putting on the potc soundtracks in order to do tasks is that yes, it does make you more powerful, but it also makes you not think anymore. this is bad or awesome on a case-by-case basis.

pictures from the annual maintenance of the great mosque of djenné in djenné, mali. the mosque was first built in the 13th century but the current structure dates to 1907.

it (like much of the rest of djenné) is built with sun-baked earth bricks, and its smooth look comes from a coating of plaster applied over it. weather erodes the walls slowly over time, so a new coating of mud and plaster is required to be applied to it every year. the maintenance is also an annual festival which djennéans take part in.

The call goes ok, in the end. It was a five alarm, called in late in a shift with nothing to do but build anticipation. And it goes fine, except this is the first five alarm Buck's been on shift for since the night he died, and Eddie knows he's not the only one feeling some kind of way about that. It's in the way Bobby inhales before every order he gives Buck, in the way Chimney's jokes are just a little too loud, in the way Hen does a visual assessment every time Buck is in her line of sight. It's in the way Eddie's own heart stops every time he pulls Buck back from falling debris or loses sight of him in the flames. The only person who seems like they're taking things in stride is Buck himself, tackling each task given to him with his usual cheerful determination.

Except they're back at the station now and everyone crawled from the showers to the bunks and Eddie is seconds from nodding off but Buck hasn't come in yet. Eddie has been lying there staring up at the ceiling waiting for him to wander through the doors, safe and in one piece, but the minutes stretch on and on and still he doesn't appear. Eddie curls his hand into a fist, uncurls it, and stands up.

Buck isn't hard to find. Eddie can hear the soft tread of footsteps in the sleeping station, and follows the sound up the stairs to where Buck is pacing from the couches to the kitchen and back again.

"Hey," Eddie says, word coming out on a sigh of something like relief. He'd made no attempt to quiet his approach so Buck doesn't startle at the sound, but he does half in his path. His body is stretched taut as a piano wire.

"Hey," Buck responds. His hands clench and unclench, a trait so shared between them Eddie isn't sure which of the two of it started with anymore. "You're not tired?"

"Exhausted," Eddie says, scrubbing a hand over his face. "But you didn't come to bed."

"Sorry," Buck says and, gentleman that he is, looks genuinely guilty for it. Eddie shakes his head and comes a few steps closer.

"Just wanted to…" Eddie's not sure how to finish the sentence. Make sure you were ok? See you standing with your eyes open, because when we're apart for too long I feel your dead flesh on my palms? That one doesn't even make sense, Buck, I was wearing gloves, but I keep thinking about how cold you must have been, and how still. "Check in."

Buck spreads his hands in a check away gesture, face unhappy. Eddie is grateful he's not hiding it, at least. "I'm… I can't sleep."

Eddie nods, stepping closer again. He just stands there, arms folded, waiting for Buck to continue and breathing evenly in case he needs a pace to match. Buck watches him, chewing his lip.

“It wasn’t even going up the ladder,” he says finally, “that was the hard part.”

“What was the hard part?”

“I slipped a little,” Buck says, and he lets out a little laugh as he says it, eyes wide and shaking his head. “Stupid. Loose tile. I slipped a little and I didn’t even fall, but it felt like I was going to for a second and I thought I was going to die.” He shrugs, big, lips pressed together. “How stupid is that? I was so scared and like- what even would have happened? Even if I had fallen, it would have been fine. Floor was solid. That room wasn’t even on fire yet. But in the moment I really thought I was going to die and it scared the shit out of me, Eds.”

“It’s not stupid,” Eddie says, moving close enough to reach out and touch but not doing it yet. “And hey, you’re a tall guy, long way to fall. With your luck I bet you could have managed a fatality.”

Buck breathes out sharp through his nose, mouth quirking up in one corner. He looks small, and if Eddie had to explain the thought process behind taking the final step and wrapping his arms around him, the honest and nonsensical answer would be that he's checking to make sure Buck is still two inches taller than him. He is, of course, and 6'0" and 6'2" is not much of a difference but Eddie's always appreciated the way Buck's spine curves down around him when they embrace. All the air in Buck's lungs exhales out over Eddie's left shoulder. He can feel his chest sink in with it.

"I'm always… I'll try to catch you," Eddie says. His hands are flat on Buck's back, and he moves one up his spine to rest on his neck. "If you fall."

Buck nods, their hair scraping together. "I know."

They stand there for a while. Eddie thinks he should probably step back, but Buck is relaxing in his arms, and it's warm, and he's still so tired but this feels sort of like dreaming already. He idly rubs Buck's neck, and Buck's hands tangle gently in the back of Eddie's shirt.

"Thanks," Buck whispers, minutes or hours later when the tension holding him rigid is all bled out around their feet. He presses his face into Eddie's shoulder for a second, and Eddie misses it when it's gone. "I think I can sleep now."

"Alright," Eddie whispers, and since this is half a dream anyway he lets his hand cradle Buck's chin for a moment as they part. Buck smiles at him, easy, the brightest thing in here at 3 AM with the kitchen lights set to dim. "Come on."

They walk to the bunks with their shoulders bumping together, and Buck is out seconds after he's down. Eddie, as always, follows right behind him.

How do you write a character that "possessive" vs one that's controlling.

There's a difference between the two, and people need to know!

I'm gonna do my best here, please bear with me anon! I am basing this off of my personal experiences and what my friends have told me over the years, along with my years of reading. I will try to format this in a way that's easy to read, but it won't go very in-depth because I do not have a lot of experience in this specific field.

I will, however, do my best to get the differences across.

A possessive person is someone who, not unlike a dragon, has a deep attachment to things it views as important/theirs.

If you're is at a party with them, and they see you chatting around, they probably won't do anything about it. But they'll watch. If someone gets a little too close, their right there, arm around you, joining the conversation.

A possessive person is someone who sees something, and thinks "mine". What I mean by that is they have their person, and they don't want others thinking that they can have their person too. They don't share well. However, they aren't going to take over your life and be overbearing about everything they do.

It's a tad bit similar to jealousy, in a way. They want their person to be theirs. They don't want to share you with the world, but they will, knowing that in the end, they're who you are coming back to every time.

You might feel a little smothered by them sometimes, but they aren't trying to take over your life. They just want everyone to know that you are with them, and that you aren't looking for a replacement.

A controlling person, however, can show traits of possessiveness, but not in the way you want. If they see you doing anything they will find a way to get involved.

If you go to a party with them, you most likely won't be chatting around and having a good time with strangers. They don't want you to talk to anyone but them, and maybe a few select individuals. They'll keep you nestled close, whispering about how they could never share you with anyone else.

They'll micromanage what you do, finding a way to exert control over your friends, your family, maybe even what you eat in a day. They'll have a schedule for you to follow, things they expect you to do, ways they want you to act.

They are manipulative in order to get what they want out of you, digging their hooks in to keep you under their control.

You'll feel like a token in a board game, something to play with. You might feel like a doll, something for them to dress up and take out, only to be shoved back in your box when they're done. You won't have your autonomy, everything you do gets back to them, and you will feel owned.
