Concoctor (Alchemist Archetype)

 Back in older editions of the Worlds Oldest Roleplaying Game, there used to be a table for random effects that would occur when a player dared to mix multiple potions together and drink the results. Such mixing was often volatile, but could sometimes produce wondrous results.

Today’s archetype is an homage to those old tables with an alchemist that specializes in mixing potions with their extracts and mutagens.

These concoctors belong to a philosophy of mixing complex concoctions first and working backwards to try and see where the strange new effects that result came from. However, due to the variation introduced by impurities and different amounts of ingredients, it can be hard to predict what effect their next batch will have.

In the real world, such mixing would inevitably result in toxins and corrosive chemicals, or outright render them inert and foul, but due to some luck of longtime experimentation, these alchemists have learned how to reduce the likelihood of such occurances, producing various positive results.

This archetype also pairs well with the alchemical concoctions from Adventurer’s Armory 2, which delves into similar themes of mixing alchemical items to produce new effects!

(In all seriousness though, don’t mix chemicals unless you know exactly what they do, folks)

 The first, and more stable of the mixtures these alchemists are capable of are the brewing of potions that are mixed with their mutagens, allowing them to gain the benefits of both in one drinkable solution. Of course, much like a normal mutagen, this concoction is only meant for the alchemist in question, and they can only have the benefits of one at a time. More stressingly, they cost twice as much raw materials to make, and go inert a day later, meaning that they are best brewed at the beginning of a day before adventuring, and then consumed as the day goes on.

The more volatile of their arts, however, is their ability to mix an extract and potion on the fly, drinking it before the reaction renders it inert. In such a case, the concoction has a random side effect, ranging from one chemical subsuming the other to empower the other, both functioning normally, both functioning at increased potency, or even for much longer than normal.

This archetype can be a fun way to spice up a self-buffing alchemist, combining potions and extracts to get more out of their buffs potentially, and doing the same with their mutagens. That being said, I dislike the fact that the potions you brew for the mutagen concoctions have to be created for twice the value when they burn up if unused, but I understand this is mostly to prevent players from stockpiling the strong items. In any case, this archetype is begging to be used with a build that focuses on self-buffs. Perhaps a buffed melee build.

 As mentioned above, this method of discovering new effects is… not very scientific. The variables are too random, and impossible to replicate, with basically no control over the variables. In this way, it shares some of the chaos of the mad scientist and first world innovator archetypes, but this one in particular feels more… haphazard, than even the random effects of those archetypes. Perhaps these alchemists are dropouts that couldn’t hack it under scientific constraints, or are desperate and/or reckless enough to use their own bodies at a testing ground.

  The Stormfire Collective is a volatile community of fringe scientists on the edge of Volang territory where all sorts of experimental invention and alchemy takes place. An adventurer looking for the cutting edge in terms of technology can probably do a lot with this place, but one should be wary about being asked to test any new invention or concoction for obvious reasons.

 A fire suddenly erupts in the Red Quarter, and the party are close enough to help out. Once the flames are out, an examination of the building reveals the burned body of a kitsune clutching a formulae book. The concoctions within seem dangerously overmixed, toxic, even, and yet… it seems like some of them might actually work, hopefully without burning down the lab.

 The fugitive the party have been tracking dives off the dock while drinking a bubbling concoction. Those that follow are shocked to discover their quarry has transformed into a massive hookfang worm with strange mutations all over its body and muscles that threaten to split it’s exoskeleton. What sort of mad mixture did the fool drink?

Random thoughts on HTTYD RttE S3 (Ep1-7)

Ep1 - Dagur is a lot of fun honestly, but I'm not sure how far this newfound "good faith" of his goes

Wow, he's a good fighter

I'm kinda afraid of that antidote, ngl

Hiccup, da heck? Why did you throw yourself out of the cavern??

Aww, the little sad look on Dagur's face when Hiccup yelled "I hate you"

Okay, yeah he is a good guy now

Well, more of a wild card really - I have 4 seasons ahead of me, I wouldn't be surprised if Dagur went back to the dark side at some point

The ep ends, and the only thing I know for sure is Astrid's not gonna be happy when those two get back to the Edge

Ep2 - Snotlout's high pitched yell is so funny, but I feel bad for laughing

Hookfang casually screeching at the Fire Worm Queen

Uhm, what history?? How do those two know each other? I wanna knowwwww! Im guessing it's from the first 2 seasons

Hiccup has so much patience for his team, istg - no wonder he's super snappy to his enemies

Okay, this Cavern Crasher looks super cool in all his originality (i mean, green fire, how cool is that??) but he's also a bit disgusting

The Fireworms babies are so so precious, and their cave looks really cool

He's singing the baby a lullaby?! How is he being so soft, omg

Ha, Hookfang's awkward grin when the Queen looked at them

"Ho, ho, no you don't!" You go, Fishlegs! No one touches baby dragons on his watch

Hookfang got himself the worst possible babysitting job ever - he's gotta protect a hundred baby dragons, their mother, and his dumb of ass rider

Queenie is such a cute nickname

Hookfang is the real MVP of this ep

Another cute Hiccup&Snotlout interaction - Hiccup is really supportive of everyone, it's sweet

Ep3 - Fishlegs' 2nd name is Justin?

Wow, Astrid and Ruff look weeeeird like that - and why is Gothi also wanting him??

Uhm, are we not gonna comment on Fishlegs dreaming of Snotlout confessing to him dressed as a bride too? No? Okay, then

"Why would Hiccup put you in charge?" Uhm, he's the only one with common sense, for starters

Okay, that throwing-the-pot thing is not cool, guys, please stop it,it's giving me ptsd

I want Fishlegs to punch one of them, but I don't think it'll happen - not now at least

Okay, I feel like Hiccup was a little harsh there. Fishlegs should not have to be their babysitter, they're old enough to know their actions have consequences. Before being disappointed in Fishlegs, he should be so at the others

Ep5 - So remember when I said, way back there, that this show was gonna like to hurt Astrid a lot? Yeahhhh surprise, surprise

Ep6 - I'm honestly not sure who's gonna be proved wrong by the end of the episode, Hiccup's paranoia, or the gang's carelessness

Of course the chicken has a meal plan

It's annoying me that they're swimming with their clothes on, but I'll close my eyes to it

So the dragons aren't okay

You cannot tell me the other riders didn't hear Fishlegs' screams

It was something in the water I'm guessing, since Toothless is okay

Okay, maybe I'm biased, but isn't it always Toothless the last one standing, or the one dragon that doesnt get hurt, or the only one that notices something's wrong? Like, what about the others? Are Toothless' skills that above the other dragons that he notices what none other does?

This was a salty comment, but I do wonder

These scenes with the Nadder flocks and then Toothless and Windshear are a nice reminder that the dragons are still, well, dragons - the others are already so well-trained I forget they were wild before and had to be trained

I hate myself for this, but I can't help but think Heather is using Windshear as an excuse... There's something else here

Random Thoughts on HTTYD RttE S5 (Ep8-13)

Ep8&9 - And we start with Hiccup suffering. Always a good way to start, I say

Also, is it just me, or has Mala's armour-thing been getting more and more damaged as the episodes go on, and she just hasn't fixed it? It's all battered and scratched now

Like, I understand where Hiccup's dillema is coming from, but it feels dumb and forced when they have hurt dragons before. Never have they killed dragons, sure, but they certainly have attacked some, usually in self-defense or to save a fellow rider, but sometimes it's simply for the benefit of another dragon who the Riders are closer to - right now the only moment I can name where that happens is that ep with the Fire Worm Queen; they attacked another dragon and chased him away from her nest, despite the fact that this other dragon was just doing what they needed to survive as well. Hiccup and the gang still attacked him and drove him away. So, where's the difference here?

There are a lot of them, I know, but I don't think any of them can completely justify Hiccup's inner conflict right now

I really hate how much of an amazing voice actor David Tennant is - and by hate I mean love, I just hate Spitelout gets to have his voice, he doesn't deserve the beautiful accent :')

Dunno what plan Hiccup could've possibly come up with, but I'll happily wait to see it

Also, props for Toothless for holding his own against the Singetails so well

Before I continue watching I'm just gonna predict one of the riders is getting poisoned. And my guess is Astrid because it's always poor Astrid who gets this stuff

Okay, Stormfly was the one hit - Astrid still takes emotional damage by proxy, so I wasn't that far

Nice seeing Fishlegs calm Astrid down - those two have a really sweet friendship

I honestly think Fishlegs was the one drawing the short straw this time - he's stuck with the twins and has to extract the venom

The serious-ish conversations Hiccup and Snotlout have sometimes are so nice - they always leave me with a happy feeling. Also, Hookfang and Snotlout love, yes please

Awww, Ruff that was super sweet. Neither is ever going anywhere without the other and that's final - not even a marriage proposal exactly Ruffnut's style would move her

To be fair though, she didn't look all that heartbroken

Also, Tuffnut is the baby brother. Random information but good to know

"And should I die, at least then my brother and I will be reunited." That was one heck of a deep and bittersweet statement, and you know what? Best part is that I'm sure she means every single word of it

Ruffnut deserves a good rest after this episode: first she's proposed, then her twin brother dies, then her supposed groom is threatened by a hord of invisible angry dragons, then her brother's ghost comes to haunt her, then she finds out he's no ghost but was actually her brother, who faked his death for her happiness. It's a full day

The Changewings are kinda pretty

This was a sweet ending - I know I keep saying this, but it's always so much fun to see the twins being just a tad more serious than usual, especially since they're moments that don't last long

Ep12- Hey Heather, Dagur! It sure has been a while

Dagur pulled a sneaky-sneaky on Heather - she's not gonna be happy about it

Is Chicken pregnant? Or she found a lover? Also, Snotlout: the narrator we didn't know we needed

Ouch, Dagur. I thought you guys were buddies too

Astrid's on babysitting duty again

And we're back to Vanaheim, nice

I gotta say it or I won't be satisfied: I'll never forgive Dagur, nor the show as a whole, for forgetting about Shattermaster's existence. He deserved the world and more

I could argue this endlessly but I'll stop here or I won't be able to continue watching the ep

Is it just me, or is Snotlout even more pissy and sarcastic today? He's been making quips ever since the episode started

Dragon riders that aren't Hiccup or Astrid being competent and making good calls will never not be satisfying

I gotta say though, I call bullshit on the whole "Hookfang can't carry more than 3 people for long" thing. Toothless, who's like, a third of Hookfang, is able to carry 2 people super easily - one of them being Stoick, who is one of the biggest humans in the HTTYD franchise. Barf&Belch, a bit thinner and smaller than Hookfang, are able to carry the twins all the time for whatever period they need. And yet you wanna tell me that Hookfang, who's bigger than both, can't carry Snotlout, Heather and a man who probably weights as much as a couple of Terrors? Hmmmm

And it's not like he's been flying for long either, and he got to rest his wings while Snotlout shopped

Poor Dagur, the guy got his sister back like, 1 year ago? And he's already risking losing her again, and the last time he saw her he stole from her, no wonder he's like this

Oh, fuck that man, seriously. Of course he just freaking tipped the cage to the ocean when leaving. Besides downright cruel, it's just a douchy move

I love these commentaries and I say some of your comments were curious about references to past adventures. So I will happy inform RTTE isn’t the first How to train your dragon tv show. The first is “Dragons: Riders of Berk” (1 season) and then “Dragons: Defenders of Berk” (1 season). They shortened The HTTYD to Dragons:

Tbh whilst Riders and Defenders are technically seperate shows, there is no time skip between them and they work best as one show with two seasons really. Most references to past adventures in RTTE are actually D:R/DOB episodes. Like Hookfang and the Fire worm queen and how the riders met heather.

Thoughts on HTTYD RTTE S3 (Ep1-7)

Ep1 - Dagur is a lot of fun honestly, but I'm not sure how far this newfound "good faith" of his goes

The ep ends, and the only thing I know for sure is Astrid's not gonna be happy when those two get back to the Edge

Ep2 - Snotlout's high pitched yell is so funny, but I feel bad for laughing

Uhm, what history?? How do those two know each other? I wanna knowwwww! Im guessing it's from the first 2 seasons

Hiccup has so much patience for his team, istg - no wonder he's super snappy to his enemies

The Fireworms babies are so so precious, and their cave looks really cool

So the dragons aren't okay

You cannot tell me the other riders didn't hear Fishlegs' screams

It was something in the water I'm guessing, since Toothless is okay

Okay, maybe I'm biased, but isn't it always Toothless the last one standing, or the one dragon that doesnt get hurt, or the only one that notices something's wrong? Like, what about the others? Are Toothless' skills that above the other dragons that he notices what none other does?

This was a salty comment, but I do wonder

These scenes with the Nadder flocks and then Toothless and Windshear are a nice reminder that the dragons are still, well, dragons - the others are already so well-trained I forget they were wild before and had to be trained

I hate myself for this, but I can't help but think Heather is using Windshear as an excuse... There's something else here
