Macbeth Syndrome: a crippling fear that the same violence you used to rise to power will be exacted upon you. This explains sO much about white America in general, and settler colonial countries specifically. Speaking of Israel….

I have a lot to say about HOAs, but I'll just leave this here since it's better:

Anyway, if you're stuck in an HOA, join the board, make it better.

If I married Minthara I would move into an HOA neighborhood with her but not because HOAs are good or because she’d like the rules and whatnot. The antagonism she would form with the HOA president is the best enrichment you could give her while doing the minimum harm to society

Probably not relevant but I’m sending you a thing that John Oliver did a couple of weeks ago on the homeowners associations. I don’t know where in it this information is, but there was a dude who had a 6 foot privacy fence and had something in his backyard that wasn’t allowed but someone looked at his property on Google Maps and they saw that he had something in his backyard that wasn’t allowed and they fined him, so just be careful. The backyard fence may not protect you.

There's nothing funnier than trying to search a fandom on tumblr such has house of ashes (HOA) and then end up stumbling upon Home Owners Association.

“Don’t you think there are more important things to discuss?”
Regulus whips his head to the left where James Potter sits, relaxed and leaned back in his chair with his arms crossed over his disgustingly broad chest. “There might be,” Regulus says with a tilt of his head, “but those things aren’t next on the agenda, so it doesn’t really matter right now, does it?” He narrows his eyes, disgust ever present on his face when James Potter decides to open his mouth.
James leans forward, putting his hands on his knees. He stares at Regulus through his gold rimmed glasses. “Interesting. I don’t actually remember seeing an agenda before this meeting. Even though all board members are supposed to approve them in advance. If I’d gotten one, I would’ve raised these concerns earlier.” His fingers are drumming against his leg in an agitated display, and it’s distracting.

URBAN LEGEND: There's a guy who hides in the backseat of your car with a knife
SUBURBAN LEGEND: the guy with the knife doesn't have the specific brand and color of knife specified by the HOA

They're putting in a new subdivision that bumps up against the back of our property. We've received a letter from the developer offering to buy the property for $36,000 (for 18 acres with a pond, highway frontage, and three natural wells - that need a little work to make useful for household water). The property is owned by my grandmother and my dad, that's $18,000 each, which isn't enough to buy a house somewhere else.
When they refused the offer, we got a letter with the new HOA bylaws and fees for the subdivision. The developer got upset when we told them we weren't part of the subdivision and would not be paying dues or following their bylaws. "Well we're the -redacted- Dairy Farm Subdivision and your property used to belong to -redacted- Dairy Farm so you're part of the subdivision!" No sir we are not. This property was purchased in 1994 and you purchased the subdivision property in 2024.
Needless to say, I'm reading the HOA bylaws and fully plan on breaking every single one of them (that we haven't already broken by the fact that we have horses, more than one dog, two businesses, and several 'junk' cars).
I hate that there's a new subdivision going in this close to us because it's been all pasture land for decades. Now it's broken into 1-3 acre lots with an HOA.
Quiet country life is coming to an end.

Something i hate a lot is HOAs. Not just because of how awful they are but because of how they COULD have been
Imagine an association in your neighbourhood to help settle disputes between neighbours, to pass the hat around when someone is sick or injured, to help find child care and pet sitting, to help persons with disabilities with physical tasks like lawn mowing or snow removal.
Instead we got management? And interpersonal problems? Awful.

Every time one of my friends who owns a home says some shit like "I want that 12 foot skeleton but the HOA would skin me alive." I am just mesmerized by the fact they think that's reasonable.
