most wood stoves "burn out" by the morning, especially when you're late getting up on a lazy Sunday
so when you go to "stoke the fire" you find this:
Tumblr media
looks like a big pile of ash, right? trust me if you put wood on there you're not likely to get fire any time soon
but what you can do is "stir the coals" with a stick
when you agitate it you gradually get the ash to the bottom and the larger lightweight coals climb to the surface, just like if you shake a pot of uncooked rice and beans - small stuff goes down, big stuff goes
so for the fire... now with coals on top you can gently place wood on them, leaving a bit of an air gap here and there - i mound the coals so that there's wood in the coals in the middle but a bit of air under the wood to either side; also give just a bit of an air gap between each piece of wood, and put a piece of wood loosely over the top as well
Tumblr media Tumblr media
the idea is that you want air flow to the coals so they get hotter, then you want the resultant flames to lick between the pieces of wood as they try to go up the chimney, so their heat catches more of the wood on fire
anyways a few minutes later if you're patient the fire will likely spontaneously catch
Tumblr media
or if you're impatient or think the leftover coals may be too lame (a mix of both today) you grab your handy plumber's torch and give it a boost

Every so often I rewatch Home Fires (sometimes the whole show, sometimes skip through bits) and I apparently forget the cliff hanger they left the series on??
Like… the show ended with a plane crashing into the doctor’s house whilst the butcher’s wife was inside having a baby!
How can I forget about that?! Also 8 years later and I’m still bitter they stopped after 2 series…

The women of Appalachia are watching each home poisoned by bad air, deadly water, their kin are losing teeth. Liver cancer, gallbladders full of black coal sludge, and still they stand for the mountains they loved, rage in the coal much for their blood-deep origin. What must it be like, I wonder, to fear the fall every day? Might come a flood. Might come death. To look out at the coal fires burning every hour endlessly for fifty years and to know your land may be condemned, razed, and not want to simply lie down and die. I am not that strong. Wickedness has leaked into the home I made, and I want to burn it down. Sister, tell me how you stand the murderous fury. You there still singing, I crave demolishing, to eat explosives. How could I have imagined this? Mortal me, brutal disaster born out of so much greed.

Trains And Tenderness - Erica Campbell/Steph Farrow/Miriam Brindsley
A/N: Day 4 part 1 for @fluffbruary
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Erica Campbell hasn’t been a fan of trains, ever, but when necessity calls for it she can and does use them. This time she needs to see her daughter. So she makes her way to the train station, a small station in the middle of the fields that surround the small village she lives in. She’s surprised to see Miriam and Steph also waiting. Steph, she knows, prefers to stay alone on her farm and she hasn’t seen Miriam since the plane had crashed and killed both their husbands. Steph had been their bond, taking messages back and forth with food deliveries for shops or homes. Then she realises. Steph’s husband had been killed too, away at war. It was more than likely that Steph would need to see someone to get the payment owed to her husband. They are alone on the train carriage and Erica moves to join the other women slowly, smiling a little weakly when Steph greets her, settling into the space the two women make between them with clear meekness. They travel home later, of course. Steph has the money from her husband, Miriam has several books that they have all needed to pick up from the WI headquarters for a while and Erica, finally, has seen her daughters and told them exactly what happened to their father. It’s a quiet trip home but Erica finds she is soothed by Miriam and Steph’s closeness.

The Dr. Blake's mysteries.(2013-2018)
🎬After a gap of 30 years Doctor Blake has returned to his hometown which is seething with change. The people turn to him to solve unresolved mysteries and much more.
📝A really delightful series. If you enjoyed shows like Doyle's War, then you will enjoy this. It's got the same old school charm about it. The first couple of mysteries were very easy to solve but it gets better and the characters develop. A really enjoyable show and I highly recommend it.

Quote
The friend with whom I had first listened to [Joni Mitchell's] Blue, her surname was Green, and so ‘Little Green’ became a song for her. And her eyes were blue, like the child Joni sings to in this song – the child named Green for spring, for the aurora, for the children ‘who’ve made her’. As I spent time in LA this confluence of blue and green revealed itself to me, and these colours filled my eyes everywhere I went, in that way noticing allows you to rapidly accrue. I went to a bar to read my book (Blue Ticket by Sophie Macintosh) and I ordered a ‘Garden Cocktail’ which was a shimmering, near-metallic green colour. Across from me were two women with blue/green tattoos on their faces and necks, and blue streaks in their curly brown hair.

I want a Home Fires / World on Fire crossover fic in which someone from Great Paxton shows up in Robina's sitting room and Sir James asks (politely, of course) why they're staring at him, and the person apologizes and explains that it's just that he's a dead ringer for their vicar, and even has the same accent!

TAG GAME: EIGHT SHOWS TO GET TO KNOW ME
tagged by @sarahlancashire 💖
scott & bailey - this is the show that got me into fandom and fanfiction (reading and writing) and basically without it i would never have met any of my internet friends. aside from that, i am not immune to fictional middle-aged female detectives with wine-red nail varnish - gill murray and julie dodson i’m looking at you both. special mention to any and all episodes written by amelia bullmore bc gdi the woman is a comedic genius
home fires - i don’t really go for war stuff usually, but this cast drew me in and thank the gods it did bc this was gorgeous. this is the show that gave me my username bc alison scotlock is the loml. it has it all - great stories, beautiful cinematography, excellent acting, a great soundtrack, plentiful pretty ladies for the milf lovers amongst us...
yonderland - only wanted to choose one show by the six idiots and honestly it could have been any of them, but yonderland won because it’s just so CLEVER while being utterly silly, which is absolutely my kind of thing. negatus is supposed to be the baddie but is just... silly and incompetent, which makes him adorable. lots of wise elder vex’s lines became lil echolalia things for me for months after i watched it
call the midwife - this is the show that has been with me for the longest time. it started when i was 15 and it’s seen me through so much and it’s my annual ‘let’s have a big cry every sunday in january and february’ comfort show with a side order of intense emotions. i have loved and/or appreciated 99% of the storylines, midwives and nuns. phyllis crane and sister julienne are my LOVES
dinnerladies - victoria wood. need i say more? this show is like an old friend to me. i can’t remember the first time i watched it but i must have seen it over 15 times. victoria’s writing is incredible and all of the cast are VERY good at bringing her characters to life. this is a get to know me and also my family kind of show - it’s the one we will all sit and watch and laugh along to and we quote it every day
last tango in halifax - look, i’m not saying some of these shows to get to know me aren’t mildly to extremely traumatising, they’re just the shows that have had the most impact on my life. sally i will never forgive you for THAT and also series 5 was so weird, but this was the first show with wlw in it that i watched after i came out and also caroline elliot is another loml (ok i have a lot...)
mum - sitcoms with added pulling hard on the heartstrings are where it’s AT. this is SO well-written and i’m a sucker for that realism. if you think it’s slow and boring then you’re watching it wrong. cathy walker, i love you. she’s so gentle. you know this show is good bc there’s a het relationship that i cry about. it’s the yearninggggg
holby city (series 14 - series 21) - again, this is not The Best by a LONG shot, but berena was my whole life when i was not great mentally and had very little else. they are my ultimate ship and bernie wolfe has my whole entire heart and basically the ik they’re fictional but if the two of them can go through the most traumatising shit and still be “happier than i ever thought possible” finding the love of their life at over 50 years of age, that gives me boundless hope <3

Our Kickstarter campaign is live! Please take a moment to read and share and support this beautiful, healing, hopeful venture in any way that you can. 🙏🏻 Homefire Tea & Botanicals is about authentic comfort and care, going where it's warm, keeping those hearth fires lit through the dark and following them home. My incredible partner Jinx and I are combining our love and knowledge of tea and Jinx's formidable experience in botany and plant medicine and creating something we hope will make people feel genuinely nurtured in this exceedingly beleaguered world of ours. Tea & self-care as ritual. Bringing people back to the Earth. This is a dream that means everything to us, one that we have worked incredibly hard to see realized and one that we are now so gently, so hopefully offering to the world in small, cupped hands. And there are real life stakes on the line; if we are successful, it will finally allow big, important life-improvement changes that we have both been desperately reaching for. It is scary to feel so vulnerable with something that means so much to you! But birth requires courage and labor, and we fiercely believe in Homefire and its concept here; deep care, deep comfort, deep healing. This will be a soft place to land and to rest your hearts and bodies in a world that is so often cold and unkind. . . Our initial goal is $1,500. Since Kickstarter is an all-or-nothing platform, we thought it would be best to start with what we think is the absolute minimum it would take for us to get off the ground with our first handful of beautiful teas and a couple of truly efficacious medicinals. 🌿 To add our medicinal teas - and more of our medicinal products that require expensive, high quality ingredients - and to elevate our overall experience for you, we'll definitely need to raise more than that. We will still grow even if we only hit our minimum, it will just take us longer than it might otherwise to bring you the things that we know can help you now. Early support is a big factor in Kickstarter success, so if you think your small pledge or simply sharing our campaign with your friends won't help, it absolutely will(!), and it is precisely those things that will give us an early boost in the various, often defeating, algorithms that control our fate. Jinx and I have put *everything* into making this something we would want to have as passionate tea drinkers and people who use real plant medicine for real life issues ourselves. If you've been a friend of mine for any length of time, you'll know that I care deeply about the well-being of others and have spent my life offering softness and love in service to that. If you're a Strange Fire and Fumery fan, then you know that Jinx equally genuinely cares about his customers and their experience with the things he puts out into the world. You will be taken care of here. 🤲🏻 If you will help us get this off the ground, I can promise that we will hear you and serve you and try to get you the things needed to improve your mental, emotional, and physical health, and raise your quality of life as much as we can in this hard world. Thank you SO much for your attention, when it is pulled in every direction. Thank you endlessly for your monetary help when things are so tight for all of us, and have been for a while. We want Homefire Tea & Botanicals to be a deeply good, warm thing that you can rely on, and we already feel so blessed by your support. 🙏🏻 Follow us: https://www.facebook.com/groups/homefiretea https://www.facebook.com/homefiretea https://www.instagram.com/homefiretea

Himachal Pradesh’s Una Inferno teaches us the importance of fire safety
Himachal Pradesh’s Una
There have been several fire incidents in Himachal Pradesh, leaving a trail of destruction in their wake. Approximately 30 houses were destroyed by a fire that erupted in Ward 10 of the Lal Singh area in Una. In another incident, a fire broke out at a house in Shimla’s Rohru subdivision, spreading to 8 neighboring houses.
Tumblr media
Residents Safe, but Properties Destroyed
As residents evacuated their homes quickly, no casualties were reported in either incident. As the fire spread rapidly from one house to another, particularly in the wooden houses of the Tikker area’s Daroti village, the properties were severely damaged.
Both fires are currently under investigation. Preliminary findings suggest that Rohru’s fire was caused by a short circuit, while Una’s fire is still unknown.
Tumblr media
The incidents serve as a poignant reminder of the need for robust fire safety measures in both residential and commercial settings. Preventing such catastrophic events requires adequate fire prevention strategies, including regular inspections, proper electrical maintenance, and readily accessible firefighting equipment.
Basic Elements Solutions is committed to ensuring fire safety protocols are robust in order to safeguard people and property.
