Minor characters are brief flickers of light that quickly go extinguished, but shine very brightly when they’re on screen.

Max's memory of Chrissy and Eddie, Will's vanishing, and Holly Wheeler.

The soft streaking effect that's shown on the shots of Eddie driving away, which are shot to be from Max's POV, is the exact same effect that's seen in Terry's dream sequence.

I've always wondered why the atmosphere of Chrissy's death feels so reminiscent of Will's vanishing, @aemiron-main made a post a while ago on how the white lights behind the doors in Chrissy's vision are reminiscent of Will's vanishing.

Which leads me to think about this shot of Will in the trailer, and how the scene is clearly being directed in a way that thematically parallels Chrissy's vision.

Max makes it a point to tell us that Chrissy was in her cheerleader outfit, so I think this is also worth adding to the discussion:

When discussing the leaks, I've seen lots of people talk about Holly(?)'s outfits, and how colorful they are. Which leads me to think about how in an older teleplay for S1E1 (pg. 26), "Colorful" is exactly how the story labels Will's clothes.

Bigger post on this later, I wanted to organize some of my thoughts here first. Seeing what Hopper says about "Chrissy Carpenter", I got a feeling there's some heavy topics ahead.

In the meantime, I think Nell's character (holly? jane? alice? idk?) is somehow involved with Will's vanishing, the scene we saw a preview of in the trailer takes place on that night, and Chrissy's story includes elements that are silently helping to build the story to this plot point.

This AU was inspired by the movie "Love & Monsters".

It starts in a post apocalyptic setting similar to that of the movie (blowing up a comet caused a bunch of animals to rapidly mutate into monsters). Entirely by accident, Steve wound up being with his girlfriend Nancy's little brother and his friends when the apocalypse happened, and the group of them have survived thus far by hiding out in a (modified to fit the setting) castle byers, and being very very cautious so as to have to fight the monsters as little as possible.

But Will got hurt, some time back, and despite their best efforts to treat the injury, he's got an infection now. They need medicine they do not have at castle byers, and Steve's already scoured the area within a day's walk or so of there looking for medicine and other important supplies and been unable to find what they need.

Steve can't leave the kids for more than a day at a time, so they're all going to have to go out together to try and find medicine for Will, a better place to set up (Castle Byers is compromised and increasingly unsafe), and other survivors (if there even is any).

On their journey they're going to encounter Billy & Max, who had only just moved to Hawkins mere days before the apocalypse started, and a lot of other characters. Billy & Max are going to somewhat take on the roles that Clyde & Minnow have in the movie, having survived together in a very different way than Steve and the party have.

Dart gets to have a part in this story too, and is a monster that Dustin befriends.

Also in this AU Chrissy and Eddie find Holly by herself and out in the open shortly after the apocalypse and have been taking care of her together since then.

Eventually the (now bigger) group makes their way to Murray's bunker (which has also been modified for setting) and get to reunite with some of their lost loved ones. Steve's been feeling guilty this whole time for developing feelings for Billy since he and nancy were still together when the apocalypse started and he doesn't know if she's still alive, but when they arrive at the bunker Nancy has already moved on (assuming Steve died) so, after feeling a bit wrecked that she assumed he'd die and also that she moved on so quickly, he finally lets himself acknowledge the feelings he's developed for Billy and they get their happily ever after.

This story take place in November. The characters, the ones who want to be heroes, became heroes after finishing summer camp. Warning: Please be advise, you are reading this story that contain spoilers of Neighbour and The Guardians of The Supernatural. You can ignore this and wait for Volume 1 of the Cappyverse main storylines, The Neighbors and The Guardians of The Supernatural to come. Or just read it and keep this informations to yourself and not share with others. You have been warned.

Chrissy deserves a rubber duck army. Truly.

Alternatively, she gets her hands on the really tiny ones, and for the rest of the month everyone is finding tiny ducks hidden in their stuff and in the cupboards.

Robin, in fact, finds a cluster of them reenacting what she's pretty sure is a wedding, but now between an alien and a cowboy duck (according to the TINY hat and the fact one of them was green), and the alien is being kidnapped by another equally as tiny duck, but this one had a rhinestone bedazzled on its butt.

She brings this up to Chrissy without touching it because it amused her that much, and the next day she finds the same wedding, except somehow the cowboy duck was armed with a really tiny sword (Courtesy of Eddie) and fighting the rhinestone duck for the alien's hand in marriage.

Anyways, Chrissy is quite chuffed when she hears her friends find another one of her duck soldiers.

Thank you for so many prompts!! This was so fun to do and now it is so long. I hope it's as good to read as it was to write out!

1) Name the best book you've read so far this year: I answered Aftermarket Afterlife by Seanan McGuire to digs just a moment ago, but I'm glad you asked too, because honorable mention goes to Inheritance by Nora Roberts. It came out in November, not technically 2024, but time is fake and 2024 is just beginning anyway, so I'm counting it. Inheritance starts pretty slow and for a bit I was wondering how it was going to manage a satisfying resolution, and then I realized she was doing something new! (unfair. she's been building to this since 2015, it's just that now is when it's starting to really click with me) Instead of a trilogy with three couples whose romance arcs each get centered in their own book, this is going to be a trilogy focusing on unraveling the family curse/haunting, with the four main characters growing tighter as a unit (and forming their two romantic pairs, of course) throughout. I really like the characters and I am delighted by the curse/haunt storytelling. Cannot wait to see more.

2) Favorite fantasy book(s): this is so hard. okay, okay, brief rundown. brief. I can do this. bookshelf by bookshelf, I think. we'll take as granted everything by Seanan McGuire, sure. Bayou Moon and Magic Strikes by Ilona Andrews. By the Sword and From a High Tower by Mercedes Lackey. Bryony and Roses and Summer in Orcus by T Kingfisher. The Blue Sword by Robin McKinley. Deep Wizardry by Diane Duane. The Long Patrol-Marlfox-Taggerung by Brian Jacques, which I always read in a shot as if they were one book. Similarly, the Protector of the Small and Magic Circle quartets by Tamora Pierce, and the Icewind Dale trilogy by RA Salvatore. Tangled Webs by Elaine Cunningham. The Return of the King by JRR Tolkien (really all the LotR trilogy, but even I cannot say I sit and read them all three straight through as if they were one). 12) Favorite horror book(s): I haven't read too many horror books, so my pool is limited here, but The Twisted Ones and The Hollow Places by T Kingfisher both gave me the shudders so bad.

15) Which genre(s) are your favorite? Fantasy! I love all the fantasy subgenres, and especially the magical realism overlaps.

17) Favorite finished book series: How finished is finished? A lot of my serieses are made up of several trilogy/quartet subsets together in a world. hmmmm. The Protector of the Small quartet again by Tamora Pierce, I think.

20) Where and how do you find new books to read? I mentioned in my reply to digs that I'm subscribed to a ton of newsletters, but I feel like I undersold their effect on me. I don't know how many I'm subscribed to--just sat here and off the top of my head counted to eighteen that post at least weekly and I'm so sure I'm missing some--and I love having that regular infusion of book progress and reviews and writing thoughts and commentary. I really do recommend that folks subscribe to their favorite authors.

26) Favorite novella(s): Silver Shark by Ilona Andrews. The Seven Brides-to-Be of Generalissimo Vlad by Victoria Goddard. Jackalope Wives by T Kingfisher.

46) I like (weird or genre-defying books), recommend me a book to read, please: First thought was the Humans Are Weird series by Betty Adams, though that might not be what you mean. They're intensely fun collections of 'humans are space-orcs' style vignettes. Maybe more directly books that are weird would be the Craft Sequence series by Max Gladstone and Hammers on Bone by Cassandra Khaw. Very toothy complicated magical realism. And my favorite genre-blending books are always the Elemental Masters books by Mercedes Lackey. A Study in Sable for instance is equal parts a Sherlock Holmes story and a retelling of The Twa Sisters fairytale, and also a coherent installment in an ongoing historical fantasy series about elemental mages in early 1900s England.

50) What kind of book have you never read but always hope to find at some point in the future? This is such a fascinating question. I don't know that there's anything in particular that I've always wanted and never found, but there are things I'm always looking for more and better examples of. I'm extremely picky about soulmate AUs, so a good one especially captivates me. Oh, or a really well-handled impromptu adoption! Child characters and bureaucracy are both tricky to write and things I know a lot about, and when they're done well they hook me so hard.

Alice Creel Haunting Funerals

There is a strange mystery surrounding Alice's death. Were meant to assume Henry killed her, however Henry completely brushes over Alice in his retelling and never answers the question as to how he was able to kill her while also vecna-ing Victor. Alice is also killed slightly differently from Virginia, which adds to the confusing surrounding why the show producers deliberately decided not to show us Alice's death.

I will be making this about strange wheeler subtext as per usual- [GUNSHOT]

First of all, lets start out with Jennifer Hayes. The little blonde girl deliberately pointed out to be crying during will's funeral during s1? Yeah her.

On her own this isn't much but there's an interesting trend of Creels & funerals that done twice in s4.

In s4 we get Fred Benson's vecna vision. Fred is already set apart from other victims because his source of guilt isn't really family trauma related. He feels guilt for being a "murderer"- in this case killing a classmate in a car accident. I've already mentioned this a million times before, but Fred Benson, visually, seems to be a combo of Mike and Ted- which is only reinforced by the fact that we get 3 references to serial killers ("psychopaths") in s4: Freddy Krueger, Michael Meyers, and Ted Bundy. This is one of two interesting father-son parallels in s4 that I will mention here.

But we get an interesting moment from Fred's vision, visually similar to the casket outside during will's funeral, and Michael Meyers is brought up:

Notice how the only three people wearing hats in this crowd of people standing outdoors on a sunny day are Jennifer, Ted, and the lady standing right next to Scott Clarke (something something sunlight something something shadows). I would say this is simply a coincidence, except we get lots of focus on this young blonde (?) girl in Fred's vision- with her own hair accessory in the forefront of the crowd, pointing at him calling him a murderer. Why a little girl?

Mind you they also deliberately parallel Fred to Henry in the moment he mysteriously obtains his powers from the grandfather clock that was there from the moment the Creels moved in- and is associated in the s4 trailer with the Attic. Henry being the person we THINK killed Alice, and the mystery surrounding the imagery of the grandfather clock which seems to be important despite the fact that it most like came with the home when the Creels bought it and Henry has no childhood personal attachment to as we've seen pervious to moving.

Which Alice- she was intentionally casted to look 12 despite canonically being 15, looking very similar in age to these other two girls.

In s4 we also get Chrissy's funeral, which contains another possible reference to Alice via a Victor parallel:

Laura Cunningham describing Chrissy as her "angel" and Victor desciring Alice as "sweet" and "innocent", plus the angel who saved Victor from his vision, which again, Henry skips over in his retelling:

Of course while Laura mentions this "angel", Patrick notices the clock, behind a slightly ajar door- which again, is repeated from that moment that Henry deliberately did not show Nancy where he was spooked on moving day and Holly in s1 being lured by the DG. Both are paralleled as "explorers":

Henry's "explorer" line being attached to him finding out that his parents have done "awful things".

What "awful" things has Holly's parents done to warrant a parallel like this?

When Victor was talking about the Creel attic, which contain things that intentionally visually parallel to the Wheeler home.

"I supposed all evil must have a home"

(Funnily enough the gang are walking around the wheeler home, Dustin passing the grandfather clock chimes on the wall while discussing Vecna).

Which then leads me to talk about Fred, Eddie, Ted (Bundy), and Michael (Meyers).

The other Mike-Ted reference is in Pennhurst: the piano (I am assuming is Ted's given that none of the other POV wheeler characters ever reference playing) and the guitar (Mike's), the only two instruments in the listening room that we can see.

Music has a particularly calming affect on the "broken mind".

Oh and the cat plushie that we always see on the piano? *stares at tfs promo*

The scene where Max and Dustin repeatedly draw comparisons between Eddie and Ted Bundy, and Eddie doing the same thing Fred apparently did after the car crash, running away instead of calling the police and which associated with guilt and blame.

There are many more Mike-Ted parallels in the show, but these two are most related to what I'm talking about. The topic of father-son parallels is so interesting considering that Son of Satan in referenced twice- in s3 with the fireworks and when Victor calls the same demon I mentioned previously with it's home in the attic a Spawn of Satan.

Which immediately takes me to the classic horror movie Rosemary's Baby which is about a woman named Rosemary Woodhouse who unknowingly gives birth to Satan's son- oh hey Rose Wheeler Weaver:

The parallels with Eddie are interesting, as one of the defining facts about Eddie's family is that his father is a criminal and Eddie laments that he might become like his father- and in dealing drugs he kind of has.

After Chrissy's funeral when Jason and others are listing out places where to find Eddie, The Wheelers interestingly enough is on there despite us never having seen them visit. Reefer Rick (Richard) is also brought up and added to the list of random Richard mentions in the show as related to drugs- Richard head of narcotics, Richard Brenner, and now Reefer Rick's home having just got out of prison listed as one of the places Eddie (compared to Ted Bundy), could be found.

This isn't the first example of sons paralleling their fathers- Eddie and Billy are major examples. We also see examples of the opposite like Will and Jonathan, who also have a father who is possibly up to some unsavory things.

Which is interesting, considering that the repeated imagery of the grandfather clock is associated with the creel home, before the creels even moved in. In fact, it's associated with Henry gaining his abilities, and we know Mike has the ability to sense the void.

We know that HNL was wrapped up in some MKUltra mindcontrol experimentation. But this didn't just start with MKUltra- the CIA had another program that preceded MKUltra by 1-2 years, Project Artichoke/Bluebird:

"involuntarily made to perform an act of attempted assassination"

We know Virginia and Brenner knew each other somehow... but what if it wasn't Virginia who approached Brenner but the other way around? Brenner, known child kidnapper, who swoops in after the killing of Virginia and Alice, has Victor blamed for the killings, and takes Henry back with him to the lab, without ever explaining how Brenner got involved in the first place. Or if he had planned it all from the beginning.

We know Brenner was trying to train El to kill, starting with small animals. This was one of Brenner's objectives, getting someone with these abilities to be willing and able to commit assassination that would be impossible to trace and prevent.

And i mean... both nights Will and Billy were taken respectively- it's heavily implied that Will was tracked from the wheeler home (wheeler tv going fucky wucky) and we also see Ted and Holly intentionally on front of the on TV when Billy was taken. In fact, they even parallel Ted on the night of Wills disappearance to Max on the night of Chrissy's death, which Eddie was an involuntary witness to and then blamed for:

And mind you, the Eddie's trailer is very creel-house coded to the point where they inserted a shot of a park very similar to the one outside the creel home before Chrissy's vision. Directly paralleling the deaths of the Virginia and Alice to Will's kidnapping/tracking from the Wheeler home.

Day 9: Christmas Films

Chicago, Illinois 1986

When she gets home from her shift at the bookstore, she’s met with the sight of Eddie sitting on the couch, wrapped up in the orange afghan. It’s all dark except for the fuzzy blue light of the tv and a few candles lit by the window. She can just make out a bowl of microwave popcorn, a few bags of candy, a box of pizza and a bottle of wine all set up on the coffee table.

“Sit down, we’re going to watch it,” he monotones as he works the remote.

Chrissy, still covered in snow flurries, breathes a confused chuckle. “…Watch what? What did you get?” she asks as she hangs her purse on the wall peg, peeling off her layers, and taking off her boots. When she sees the empty movie cover on top of the VCR, she immediately wheels around. “I’m sorry, there’s been a mistake, I don’t live here…”

“Oh, come on, Cunningham,” he croons after her.

“Nooo! There is no way I’m watching Ice Castles with you after last night.” she tells him as she makes her way toward their bedroom.

“Why not?” he pouts. “I just want to see what all the fuss is about…”

“You said you were going to pick us up a Christmas movie!”

“It’s totally a Christmas movie!” he argues. “It’s got ice skating, doesn’t it?”

“You’re just going to whine and make fun of it the whole time and completely ruin it for me.” she crosses her arms.

He gasps, placing a hand to his chest. “I would never! I only have respect for a movie that had such a big impact on you.” He wiggles his brows.

She rolls her eyes. It’s her own fault, she should have never told him. “Eddie…”

“Come on, baby, get over her, I’ve got Skittles.” he sings, shaking the small red bag to tempt her, making the round little candies clack together inside.

With a long, heavy sigh she gives in, snuggling beside him in defeat after she changes into her warm baby blue pajamas. He’s smiley and doting in his ‘hurray, I got what I wanted’ way, wrapping her up all cozy, pouring her a glass of wine, kissing her nose, then her forehead, then her pouting lips several times. He tilts his head to the side, blinking his big doe eyes down at her. ‘Don’t be annoyed with me, look how cute I am.’

“You behave yourself,” she tells him as she eats her pizza. “This is one of my favorites! No overly critical film analysis!”

“Cross my heart and hope to die,” he chuckles, forefinger criss-crossing over his chest as he presses play. “I’m very excited!”

“You’ve gotten yourself all worked up over this and you’re going to be very underwhelmed.” she sighs as the familiar theme plays, warm nostalgia and comfort beginning to seep into her bones just by the sound of it.

“How can I be underwhelmed by the movie that gave you your sexual awakening?” he asks in astonishment, watching the opening with rapt attention.

“Oh, God…” she sighs.

The minute Robby Benson comes on screen driving through the snowy landscapes in his station wagon with his amazing hair, it’s his turn to get pouty. “Oh look, there’s your boyfriend.”

“Eddie…”

“What is it?” he asks, curling his hand over his lips thoughtfully, squinting, leaning forward, his elbows on his knees. “Is it the hair?”

Coyly, she slides her hand up his back into his messy waves. “I do love thick brown hair.” she admits, massaging his skelp. He smiles and she can feel some warmth crawl up his neck, but he keeps his eyes fixed determinedly on the screen. “Oh, he’s so cool, he drives snowmobiles, he dropped out of med school, he plays hockey…” he drawls out in a low mocking tone.

“Stop.” she laughs. “You’re being ridiculous!”

About forty minutes in, he is still looking perplexed, probably wondering at what point she began to see boys differently in such a tame film with everyone wearing several layers of clothing. There’s more skin action from Lynn-Holly Johnson in her skating uniform.

When they’ve had their fill of junk food, they recline back along the sofa, Chrissy resting her head against his chest while he absentmindedly unweaves her twin braids, carding his fingers through her tresses the way he knows she loves.

She braces herself for the phone call scene. She can feel Eddie grinning when it cuts to Robby in nothing but a pair of tight white underwear.

“Oh, there it is,” he snickers mirthfully. “The moment little Chrissy became a woman.”

“Shut up.” she turns sharply, burying her face in his shirt, feeling his arms slip down to squeeze her waist.

“God, it leaves nothing to the imagination does it?”

“Stop it!” she half whines, half giggles in embarrassment.

He only chuckles louder, kissing the top of her hair. “God, you’re so cute!”

They resettle to watch the rest and Eddie grows less jealous and teasing and more quiet and invested.

“Jesus, sweetheart,” he murmurs after Lexie is found wearing her dead mother’s clothes in the attic. “This is kind of a downer.”

“It gets better.” she replies, fingers tracing over the bats along his forearm.

The real moment that makes her weak and wanting is when blind Lexie is able to do a double twist with Nick’s help and then he passionately embraces her, tender and proud, rekindling their relationship.

“Oh, baby, you did a double!”

“It wasn’t perfect.”

“Well, it was damn good… what a girl. Oh, what a girl!”

It always makes her ache.

“You’re like that,” she whispers softly, leaning up to kiss him.

“A complete pushover?” Eddie jokes, but she can tell that gets to him by the way his eyes sparkle.

“You know what I mean,” she replies seriously. “I never knew anything like that until you.”

He softens, blinking slowly before taking her face in his hands and kissing her deeply. “I’m your Benson, baby?” he asks.

“You’re more than that.” she murmurs against his lips.

There’s still some more comments and teasing as the rest of the movie plays out, but she doesn’t miss the way his eyes get a little glassy during the final skating routine or when he suddenly turns his head to wipe his eye.

“We forgot about the flowers.”

“We forgot about the flowers,” Eddie mimics Robby's soft spoken, melodic tone suddenly, obviously recovered from whatever emotional experience he may or may not have been having. “God, this guy,” he waves his hand at the screen. “With his stupid floppy hair and his stupid baby voice.”

Chrissy elbows him as the blue credits roll and the cheesy melody of Looking Through the Eyes of Love begins to play for the third time. “Shh…Be quiet, I love this song.”
