I really do like Jason more than Percy. There's a long paragraph in the Mark of Athena where Piper says Percy isn't her type. I don't want to transcribe it all immediately, but like…yeah, I get it. To paraphrase Piper: Percy looks like a trouble making kid she'd see at the Mall. A skater kid she'd steer clear of. And yeah, me too. If I went to school with him in real life, doubt i'd love him. I always hated the kids who talked back and made trouble. Even if Percy isn't a bad guy, the fact he's even capable of giving off these vibes makes him less appealing than Jason.

Because Jason has this honour, this kindness, this discipline about him. He seems way more serious, in a way that feels almost way more relatable. Or something to that effect. I lost my train of thought halfway through this, but I hope I still make some kind of sense here. And also (just to try and end this with one more point): Tempest is just cooler then Blackjack. A storm spirit, crackling and pulsating with energy? Riding a storm cloud? I'm sorry, but that's just so much cooler. I hate heights too, so the fact that Tempest doesn't have wings is a slight positive, too.

I know I begin this note by acting like I don't like Percy, but that's not true. I do like him. I swear by all the gods, I like him. But I just like Jason and Nico and Leo and a lot of other characters more. He's important to me, but I like a lot of other characters more. And I don't say that as any insult to him.

hc that piper looks way too much like silena and that’s why drew is immediately defensive against her. because let’s not forget that drew is silena’s little sister who felt so irreperably betrayed. and she knows that silena was manipulated, but if drew casts silena as a villain then she doesn’t have to deal with the agony that is grieving. so when piper comes she undoes all of that. piper is a wrecking ball that shreds whatever progress drew thinks she’s made. and not only does she look just like silena but she has the audacity to act like her too. how else is drew supposed to react. she doesn’t know what to do when her dead sister shows up at her door.

Heroes of Olympus series by Rick Riordan

I like the ensemble cast here and expansion of the narrative stakes and mythology in it compared to its precursor series Percy Jackson. The balancing of everyone’s plot lines could have been handled a little more smoothly but I overall came away from it with very positive impressions of all the new characters introduced and the differing skills of individuals were utilised in different ways! It’s always nice when different ways of contributing to a group task are presented.

I quite liked the quests shown and how they all intertwined, so it was an enjoyable read even if the interpersonal relationships weren’t always how I anticipated they could have been in terms of what I might have preferred. The gods in this share similarities with the Greek and Roman gods certainly, but for factual information on them definitely look elsewhere for reliability.

The aspec representation was neat.

The Son of Neptune and a certain Taylor Swift song

If Disney ever makes an adaptation of The Heroes of Olympus, then for The Son of Neptune one song they have to use is Taylor Swift's I Forgot That You Existed. Just when Percy is trying to remember his past, maybe you can hear it faintly in the background or something. Like during the dream empathy link they can do "You sent me a clear message."

Narcissus may have been vain and a consummate heartbreaker, but Nemesis had no right to do what she did. Trapping him in a prison of his own mind, forcing him to feel so over confident and in love with himself that he never notices the world around him. I imagine it's both more comforting and more painful, blocking out all sensation until you starve to death. In love with a mirror image, unware it's unable to love you back. I think what Nemesis did to him counts as torture. And I would hope people would back me up on that.

Also, don't even get me started on Echo. Hera apparently did that one, but seeing as Echo was cursed, I think this falls under Nemesis's jurisdiction too. Echo was cursed to never be able to talk unless she repeats the words of other people. She's the only one who genuinely cares for Narcissus, and yet she's so unremarkable that nobody notices her. These two deserve better. They were tortured in cruel and unusual ways. And I want to see them finally get their happy endings.
