The Enterprise-G crew finds out that their beloved Captain Seven has really weird tastes and hobbies and 98% the Voyager crew is to be blamed for it.
Holodeck novels? Captain Seven seldom joins in. The crew thinks Cmdr. Raffi has the most off the wall costumes until Captain Seven strides in with her own unhinged costume. Her philosophy learned from Tom Paris and Kathryn Janeway: Go big or go home.
A game of velocity?
The Senior Staff quickly learn that the Captain is competitive and a Smug winner.
Captain Seven almost takes Dr Ohk’s head off in a game of Velocity. And then someone uncovers that Admiral Janeway was her Velocity partner for years. They have refrained from asking Captain Seven from joining since.
Spelunking and rock climbing? Becomes a competitive extreme sport. They learned Captain Seven used to rock climb with legendary Chief Engineer B’Elanna. Sidney is even more invigorated with this news. Raffi has to make them promise they won’t do any more extreme climbing.
Captain Seven is an excellent gourmet cook. She even cooked her senior bridge staff a celebratory dinner. Everybody loved it and won't stop talking about it.
But Seven's own personal comfort food? Garbage taste. Raffi makes the mistake eating Seven’s comfort soup and nearly spittakes. It’s a variation of Leola root stew.
Someone suggests meditation to her. Seven returns with Regeneration is the Best Meditation and helpfully recommends cortical implants.
The person never suggests meditation again. To this day they can’t tell if Captain Seven was joking.

So. anyway.
"Not the homecoming I wanted for my prodigal daughter. But at least she’s finally home." "I get it. My mom drives me crazy, too." "Janeway is not my mother." "Could've fooled me."
These lines are only a couple pages apart in Picard: Firewall. The first is Janeway's thoughts. The second is between Seven and Ellory Kayd. Do I think Janeway strictly sees Seven as her child? Not really. Not literally. She does also verbally call Seven her 'family' when talking to others. But 'prodigal daughter' is the closest term she can use in this case so Janeway uses it.
And it makes sense. Seven is the prodigal daughter. The only person who could possibly be more than Seven is B'Elanna. In ST: Defiant around this time, B'Elanna has gone incognito/underground/become a renegade. She hasn't sent any comms to anyone besides Tom. Janeway hasn't heard from her.
But then, finally, Janeway gets in contact with one of her 'kids'. And it's Seven. And Seven needs help. And so Janeway gives it. Because they're family. Because Janeway is the one who set Seven on this path to begin with. Because Janeway has seen Seven grow and change and mature. She may not be a mother, but she is a mother figure, a maternal person. And she has spent so much of her career defending her 'children' of Voyager. For being ex-Maquis. For being ex-Borg.
And this sensation is so strong, even relative strangers are commenting on 'oh yeah I have fights with my mom too'.
But it's important Janeway be seen as more than that. And that's where the trouble starts is when people only put her in the maternal role and that's it. Everyone on her ship are grown ass adults except for the ex-Borg kiddos and Naomi Wildman. Just because she's a female Captain doesn't mean she's a Mother, too.
But these are the closest terms we have for the mentor relationship she has with Seven, and B'Elanna, and Harry (with Harry being the only one who is the right age for Janeway to even be his mother. B'Elanna is 25 in s1 and Seven is 27 and thus around ~30 when they meet while Janeway is in her mid to late 40s).
These are the closest terms they have for it. And so they are used.
But Seven is right. 'Janeway is NOT my mother.'

The Mentor You Should Have Had – Kathryn Janeway/Raffi Musiker
A/N: Day 30 of the Trek prompts from @trektober-challenge
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Raffi Musiker had always admitted she thought of Jean-Luc Picard as her mentor, and in many ways he had been… but when she met Kathryn Janeway she had known that, despite her love for him, she had been unlucky with her mentor. Kathryn was all the things she should be, all the things a mentor should be and Raffi has to walk away to stop herself saying as much to Jean-Luc’s face. She’s at the bar, of course, when Kathryn settles into the seat beside her, ordering a simple coffee. Raffi, who has been drinking soda water and trying to control the urge to order something else, something stronger, finds herself surprised when Kathryn leans closer. “So, Raffaela Musiker… tell me, is Jean-Luc as pompous on the bridge as he is when he’s at these events?” “Worse, actually.” Raffi admits, smiling just slightly when Kathryn rewards her with a laugh. “Call me Raffi.” “Raffi…” Silence, Kathryn seems to be considering something then Kathryn’s hand closes over hers and she smiles again, honestly this time. “Tell me, Raffi, is there someone waiting at home?” “No ma’am.” “Shame… perhaps you’d like to… walk me home instead?” “It would be my honor.”

star trek picard episodes 1-3 thots
THE THOTS ARE BACK
Tumblr media
So this post directly follows on from the angry freakout I had earlier this week where I live incepted myself into watching picard season 3 ride or die, because sometimes you've just got to go down to the highway and watch the car crash in person.
also, I reminded myself that I dont care about other people's star trek opinions, only my own. therefore, I needed to have star trek opinions.
here are my thots, here be spoilers
first off: gates mcfadden's face lift is fucking spectacular, the woman looks amazing. Her eye sockets are so sculpted, her cheeks are so taut, her jawline is so sharp, and yet she still looks her age. this is what growing old in the socialist utopia promises: you too can look like a woman who has not actually had to work since the early 90s. also credit to everyone looking great in their 60s, 70s and 80s.
second: jack crusher (the second??!?! how does that work anyway), is so fucking hot.
third: I went into this knowing broadly what happened in episode 1 and 2, and that episode 3 the twist is changelings, because I saw a spoiler yesterday on una mccormack's tumblr. changelings is interesting, because to do a ds9 plot in tng is bold, especially when you can't bring odo back since ya man rene audeboujournois died a few years ago. worf doesnt even mention him by name: ffs worf raffi was alive during the dominion war, she'll know who fucking odo is. he's odo.
fourth: the moment I was like, I am here for the long run was Worf's whole introduction and his everything. I think its always hard to give credit to michael dorn for being so great because he has to act stoic through SO much makeup and he just is worf, but honestly, it felt like if they'd just put the black hair on him he would have looked exactly the same as he did thirty years ago. Like they had to make his hair white just to make time have passed. The man is so well preserved, maybe he also has a very good surgeon, but I am down to believe that he just Is Like That. Damn.
five: worf is the best thing that happened to raffi, I love them together, they are the best team.
six: all of this is going to fall apart when brent spiner comes to Lore it all up, as that is obviously what was stolen from the daystrom institute alongside the portal gun.
seven: so episode 3 won me over because I had kind of forgotten how good an actor patstew is when he really gives it?? because fuck me the scene between beverly and picard where they talk about how the whole baby thing happened was so good, so subtle, so emotive. It also crucially made sense: they had tried to be together. they had failed to be together. crusher was tired of his shit, he's always been a terrible partner and it just didn't work, but then she was pregnant and ready to leave anyway, ready to move on, so just went, fine, breakup over, beverly out. Also, reminded picard that the universe keeps trying to kill him, that he'd basically killed her husband and her son, and she had no other family....thanks for the sperm donation, I'm gonna go retire and have a redo. I was already 100% team bev but now I am 200% team bev, also fuck off picard with your 'oh yeah actually I wouldn't have been my horrible abusive father fuck you for taking me at my word, my whole /r/childfree carefree bachelor attitude, how could I have known anything about myself in my early 60s, I was but a boy, we could have had it all, rolling in the deep' etc. Father and husband fuck the fuck off you traditionalist old bastard you just told us you had broken up for the FIFTH TIME.
eight: should have reserved point seven for seven herself but: SEVEN!!!! I am fucking going to do it, I'm going to write the seven of nineifesto. She is so fucking deep waters, shes been so betrayed by authority figures none of who actually give a shit about whats best for her, just for what is best for the story, she is not meant to be in starfleet ffs, she got the worst possibly mentors in janeway and picard. also seven and raffi just need to hang out with worf and tell the rest of them to fuck off.
nine: captain shaw was right and he should say it. He was having a nice time, just running his ship, doing his duty, when he gets fucking hijacked by two guys who literally are mavericks and crash ships all the time, who are manipulating seven, who MUTINIES, and they literally destroy his ship and ruin his life in the space of about 12 hours and he saw through their bullshit within 30 seconds of the 'surprise inspection' gig. justice for captain liam shaw, only sane man on the titan.
ten: look, the show is never going to stick the landing, but like all star trek, it is a journey. there are changelings, there is worf, there is raffi, there is my forthcoming 200k seven of nine fix it fic, there is so much to enjoy, and also there was the absolutely awful deaging makeup, please stop doing it, it made me feel seasick.
anyway these are my thots on yaoi kthxbye

Rating: General Audiences Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply Relationships: Kathryn Janeway & Tuvok (Star Trek), Tuvok (Star Trek) & Gwyndala (Star Trek), Gwyndala (Star Trek) & Jack Crusher (Star Trek: Picard) Characters: Kathryn Janeway, Tuvok (Star Trek), Gwyndala (Star Trek), Jack Crusher (Star Trek: Picard), Additional Characters in Minor Roles Additional Tags: Mentors, Crew as Family Summary:
Tuvok is everyone's best mentor and also determined to create more best mentors so he can eventually retire.
Limitless
Read on AO3 | Ad Astra
I started this as a fill for the 30 Days of Prodigy prompt "Friendship" and there is a friendship throughline if you squint. But I've been thinking about Janeway assigning all her Protostar kids a Voyager adult as a mentor for...ever. And the Tuvok mentors Gwyn idea is my favorite so that's this story. But then also Jack Crusher is inexplicably in this fic, too (I swear it makes sense, way more sense than this summary).

So we were supposed to take this blatant manipulation of Janeway's love for Seven, to get her to see a different way out of their problem, as her being Her Mom....
I'm supposed to believe by Picard Canon, that she's just given up and abandoned Seven.
KATHRYN JANEWAY GAVE UP.
Do you hear the Delta Quadrant screaming?
Even worse.
She GAVE UP on Seven, of all people.
The one she walked into an assimilation chamber for. Faced off with The Queen MORE THAN ONCE. Went hard as fuck for every time she was slightly threatened. Destroyed an entire timeline, committed herself to breaking every law possible, TIME TRAVELLED, told herself to shut tf up and do as she's told, and then sacrificed herself to the Borg Queen. All to save HER.
Tell me you don't understand a character, who you didn't even bother to bring in, just used for a plot device, without telling me.
I actually haven't watched Picard. I'm sorry. I was immediately mad at it for the 'oh yeah Seven is queer, but no Janeway is HER MOM who ABANDONED HER you guys'.
We need More TNG stuff, because it didn't already get the bulk of what we gave the fandom...🙄
Bob forbid we could get a series, even combining DS9 and Voyager, in a 'what happened later' way. Voyager started on DS9.
I would love to see the crew back at DS9.
Reunion at Quarks!
Maybe we dick around and bring Sisko back *hand wavy shenanigans*
Look, we get some actual closure. Why would any of us tune in for this...
As everyone gets a chance to relay what they've gone thru the past 10-20 yrs, with people they may have not seen and/or worked with since Voyager or with new friends on DS9.
Tell stories of reacclimating to life after Voyager and after the war. The 'hey do you remember when?..' 'Did this happen with you when we got back? This was my experience. What during the war can we trauma bond with the DQ people' stories.
DS9 crew getting to know Voyager's officers can create a background on the two series continuity. Bring out deep cuts and cameo stories along the way. Bring a reason to bring their respective ships/crews to DS9. Not another war or disaster. Bring back the science and exploration Trekking. Admiral Janeway taking a small fleet of diplomatic and science vessels out from DS9. Nog is one of her Captains. Harry is another. Tom and B'Lanna jump for an adventure, after a few years of staying close to Sol System. With Miral and Naomi being members of Janeway's bridge officers. I'm putting Miral at Tactical and Naomi at Ops. Miral used the best of her parents talents, and Admiral GMA tutoring growing up, to become amazing at Tactical/Security. She was personally mentored by Tuvok in The Academy.
They have slipstream and make quick treks out from DS9 and back.

I don't ship J7 or B7 but I adore the idea of Seven having a crush on both of them.
It would explain why Seven is like that in their interactions and treats most of the men with complete disinterest.

Seven of Nine greeting Picard (and Riker) aboard a Starship
Picard 2x01 | Picard 3x01
I hope if/when we do get Legacy Seven greeting Admiral Janeway aboard the Enterprise -- but Janeway uses a Transporter and Janeway tests Seven on all things science just like how Janeway's mentor tested her.

Labels
‘Seven and Janeway have a mother/daughter relationship.’
‘Seven and Janeway are obviously in love!’
If you put a gun to my head and told me to define the Seven/Janeway relationship, I’d just be dead. I don’t know if a label has been invented. Much of it is in the eye of the beholder. Here’s the eye of this beholder.
Season four there’s a ‘teenage foster kid’ vibe. Seven challenges Janeway on everything and often chafes under her command. But she’s also a bit lost and relies on Janeway whether she likes it or not. It’s a slow development of trust. Janeway feels responsible for her and wants to reach her. But knows she shouldn’t push too hard or too fast. She invests heavily into Seven and can’t stand the thought of losing her. ‘No you absolutely will not freaking stay in the Delta Quadrant. You’re just a big fraidy cat. You’re coming with us, you fiend.’
The moments when Seven returns some of that investment. Janeway’s on cloud nine the rest of that day.
Mulgrew would probably say it’s a mentor/mentee relationship. And there are lines like, ‘you wish to mold me into your image’ or whatever. There are elements of that. There are elements of all kinds of things, it’s not just one clear thing. Which is why I don’t argue with people about it cuz it’s like, pick whichever element you want, I guess.
Over the seasons Seven matures. Janeway eventually does give Seven the option to leave, although she clearly does not want her to. With the Janeway/Queen/Seven triangle, I get all kinds of vibes. There’s ‘Seven has two mommies and they’re fighting for custody’ and sapphic undertones. I mean, when they said Seven dated women in Picard, that was the least surprising thing ever. To me, anyway.
Every label I hold up to it, I end up discarding. None really do the trick. Seven becomes extremely important to Janeway, that’s all I can say.
I have no idea the box I would put it in. It gets its own box. It just kinda lays on top of all the boxes, stretches and suns itself.

Beta Cannon: the Pre Voyager Era of Kathryn Janeway | Mosaic v The Autobiography of Kathryn Janeway
Tumblr media
This weekend, I got a copy of the Autobiography of Kathryn Janeway from a local book store. For how frequently we speak about Mosaic in the community (despite having some flaws) I was shocked that I had not heard a lot about this book and assumed it was a bad thing. And yeah in some regards it was (see @mia-cooper’s post on the subject). I have a lot of feelings (I’ll post a proper review at a later point) but one thing that did stick out to me is the divergence from what we have considered Beta Canon, aka, the extended universe of Star Treks told through novels, short stories, video games, etc. After completing the novel, I jumped right into my old standby copy of Mosaic, which has dictated a lot of Janeway’s back story since 96. Both of these novels cover the beginnings of Janeway’s life and how she was shaped into the woman we know.
TLDR The Autobiography of Kathryn Janeway changes a lot of things for no reason. Some of these are for the good. Some for the bad. And some, for like no good reason at all, like it was fine as it was, and was accepted cannon for like 25 years, but sure fine whatever.
I will mention that, as Mosaic has been a book in my library and I have read it too many times, so of course, I do have a bias toward it. Additionally, I feel like it is fair to mention here that authors of Fanfiction have leaned on this as their bibles since 1996 as Mosaic is written by Jeri Taylor, one of the show-runners for Voyager. Because of its connection with a showrunner, Mosaic is also integrated into the canon of the show. It seems that most points that are taken from Mosaic in the Autobiography are only included because of their existence in cannon material.
Anyway, this review is going to focus on the characters that shape Kathryn and I will end with my final thoughts. This is long so to respect your dash, you are going to have to click keep reading. You’re welcome.
Obligatory Spoiler Warning for ALL of Mosaic, chapter 13 of Pathways, and chapters 1-7 of The Autobiography of Kathryn Janeway
Tumblr media
Edward Janeway
In all media, I feel like we can safely say that Kathryn Janeway is in fact a daddy’s girl. Her relationship with her father is very important to her, so it is interesting to see how it is portrayed very differently in both novels. In Mosaic, a lot of the highlights of Janeway’s earlier years revolve around time spent with him. From giving her special attention after ‘Your Sister’ was born, to consoling her after her losing tennis match and subsequent walk home in the rain, and trips to Mars, Kathryn mentions great fondness of quality time spent. In the Autobiography of Kathryn Janeway he is more described as an absent father, one that she always wanted to see and please. When he was home, she wanted all of his attention and to impress him greatly. She wished to follow in his footsteps after gaining a love of flight and the stars with a plane ride and a telescope he gave her. He tried to prepare her by detaining the events of the current conflict with Cardassia and inviting Starfleet brass over for dinner. Overall, in her early childhood, it makes more sense for Edward to not be around often. There is not a lot of conflict between the sources, other than the details of the aforementioned tennis match and different childhood nicknames.
Edward is in a crash aboard an experimental ship on Tau Ceti Prime which leads to his death. This is where the big differences begin. In Mosaic, Kathryn and her fiancé are also on board. In  Autobiography of Kathryn Janeway, Kathryn is still on the Al-Batani. The fall out of this event has a great effect on Kathryn of course in both novels. As this is a missive shaping event of Kathryn’s life, I felt it very jarring to be changed. This moment shaped Janeway and gives us good context for why she handles situations the way she does. I see this trauma and I understand her character better, for dealing with the loss of two of the most important people in her life all at once.
Gretchen Janeway
The Autobiography of Kathryn Janeway was good to Gretchen Janeway as her character is basically a blank slate. We know little about her from Mosaic as it mostly focuses on Kathryn’s relationship with her father (and other male influences in her life). It is nice to learn more things about Grechen as with Edward’s job, it is likely that Kathryn was mainly raised by her. Other than being an artist, she also wrote some of the Flotter holos and wrote a number of children’s stories about the people of Bajor during the occupation. She does a lot of humanitarian work with the refugees from Bajor during the occupation. She loves to garden and get her daughters involved. She has a close bond with Phoebe due to their overlapping interests, but you can tell that she strives to support her in what she does. Overall, I like getting know Gretchen to be someone of than Kathryn’s mother.
Phoebe Janeway
I was shocked when researching Memory Alpha for this review, Phoebe is never named in any Cannon media up to this point (Star Trek Prodigy could very well change this). We know Janeway has a sister and she is an artist, but that is it. Both novels keep her very similar personality-wise. In both stories, Kathryn is not looking forward to being a big sister. They also both mourn the loss of their father together. In Mosaic, she is not mentioned much. Kathryn tells her she is not old enough on an off planet trip and Phoebe plays pranks on her. The Autobiography of Kathryn Janeway goes much more into depth. They don’t get along when they are younger. They fight a lot. I feel this is a very realistic portrayal of real siblings, vying for attention and approval, snapping when they don’t get their way.  They both excel at what they do, Kathryn in her studies and Phoebe through her art. They seem to need to one-up each other at every turn.  As they grow up, they grow closer together, as many siblings do. Points added for giving Phoebe a wife, something which has been included in a lot of fanfiction. Overall, there are no big conflicting points.
Tumblr media
Mark Johnson
Kathryn’s fiance at the time of the Voyager’s disappearance, Mark is a very different part of Kathryn’s life in both novels. In Mosaic, he is a childhood friend and went by his middle name Hobbs. Seemingly always two steps behind Kathryn, he did a lot of the same activities that she did, tennis and swimming in the underground cave systems. He did these poorly, and this makes Kathryn always look down upon him. They reconnected after her father’s death and she fell head-over-heels for him. Personally, I always felt this was a little uncharacteristic of Kathryn, to run away from her responsibilities to be with a man. It just seems very out of character and has always bothered me. The  Autobiography of Kathryn Janeway takes a completely different approach. She meets Mark as a friend of Pheobe and her wife as a widower. They hit it off and they fall hard. You can see the conflict in Kathryn as she debates how to move forward with a relationship as they have different outlooks on life. She has a drive to explore but does not want to be an absent parent. She debates quitting, which I don’t think is something Janeway would have ever done. Overall she decides to accept Mark’s proposal just before taking command of Voyager. This makes the Dear John situation a lot more believable as it makes sense that he would want to move on with his life much quicker. Overall, I have to just ask, why? I know Mark doesn’t have a lot of character, but why change basically their whole relationship dynamic?
Justin Tighe
Justin is a character I actually like for selfish reasons. This explains why I was very miffed that he was nowhere to be seen in the Autobiography of Kathryn Janeway. Justin is Kathryn’s first love, they were coworkers, engaged and in love, and dies in the same accident that takes her father. As a person who always wanted Chakotay and Janeway to get together, this incident perfectly gives the reason. She is afraid to get romantically involved with a crew member because of the nature of the job. This dynamic is seen between Picard and Nella Daren in TNG very well. Kathryn has learned the hard way that she can lose a person under her command and how it feels when you are in love with that person. In early Voyager, you can see she isolates herself from the crew and it takes time for her to get comfortable. And during Night she relapses to her old ways. This is the way I have always justified Janeway’s reluctance to have a romantic relationship during their time in the Delta Quadrant. By understanding her background, I have a lot of respect for that choice. Her relationship with Justin really shaped how she handles relationships and without the impact he had on her life, it actually makes her character weaker.
Owen Paris
Owen is Kathryn’s mentor. In Mosaic, they meet as he is reviewing her junior honors thesis advisor on massive compact halo objects. From here they gained a relationship built on respect and learning. It makes sense that, as he was her personal mentor, that she would be close with his family, and why she would seek out Tom as a person to bring with her to the Badlands mission. In the Autobiography of Kathryn Janeway, she does not meet him until she is on the Al-Batani. This doesn’t only weaken her relationship with Admiral Paris, but moreover weakens her relationship with Tom. If he was her superior officer, why would she develop such a ‘big sister’ mentality to Tom if she didn’t have as many opportunities to meet him?
Tumblr media
Tuvok
Mosaic does not go too much in depth with Tuvok and Janeway’s relationship, but its sister novel Pathways does. In Pathways, Tuvok meets Janeway when he is an ensign under her command of the USS Bonestell. The Bonestell and the Billings, two ships that Janeway served on, tend to get confused a lot. Most sources have Janeway’s first command as the Voyager, Including Voyager itself -  “It doesn't seem like my first command is shaping up the way I expected,” Janeway Shattered. The Autobiography of Kathryn Janeway has her and Tuvok meet on the Al-Batani. I actually really like the dynamic between them, as they grow to respect each other over a much longer period of time. I also like that, though Janeway climbs through the ranks, it does not change their relationship dynamic as she still relies on him and asks him advice as if they were equals. I think giving them a longer time to build their relationship. Also would like to note that Janeway and Tuvok also had a friendship with the original CMO of Voyager, Dr. Fitzgerald. I always wanted to know more about the Pre-Caretaker crew and I would have loved to see this dynamic and how the grief of losing a close personal friend in the Caretaker incident would impact them both.
Also I feel obligated to shout out the Janeway and Tuvok story in Star Trek Waypoint One-Shot. I need to get around to doing a series retrospective, but this short story I have not seen anyone talk about and I love it so much. Please read Waypoint. Okay next.
Tumblr media
Other characters
Cheb - Janeway’s boyfriend in Mosaic. He was kind of an asshole and got her into trouble. He is not in the Autobiography of Kathryn Janeway and I see no problem with this.
Boothby - “[he is the] head groundskeeper at Starfleet Academy. When I was a cadet, he used to give me fresh roses for my quarters,” Janeway Revulsion. Boothby is not in Mosaic. In the Autobiography of Kathryn Janeway, it is explained that her mother loved to garden and this was something that Boothby did as a gradian figure to make her feel at home and destress. Makes sense.
Aisha - A childhood friend of Katheryn’s. Only in the Autobiography of Kathryn Janeway. Mosaic has this weird thing about highlighting the relationships with only the men in her life, so it is nice to see her have some other female friends.
Nexa - Katheryn’s roommate at the Academy.  Only in the Autobiography of Kathryn Janeway. Nexa helps broaden Kathryn’s horizons by helping to learn about Exoliguisticts, first contact, and the Betazoid culture. Again nice to see her have other female friends.
Riker - Yes they go on a date in Mosaic. He is not mentioned in the  Autobiography of Kathryn Janeway. I know he is a gag character but I still liked it.
-----------------------
Final Thoughts
A lot of characters were changed between these two novels. There is a lot to like and a lot to hate. I really like what the Autobiography of Kathryn Janeway did with characters like Tuvok and Gretchen Janeway. Other characters were not so lucky (Justin, sweetie I’m so sorry that they would erase you like that, oh my god). It’s a mixed bag, but one thing I need say is... why?
We have had a good thing going here with the established canon as is. Mosaic (and Pathways) is the foundation of which the last 25 years of fanworks and the relaunch novels are based on. Why change history when it is already written?
Always, would love to hear your thoughts and thank you for reading my novel of a post. I will see you in the full review.

While MLB and VLD both have issues with diversity baiting I think VLD has more issues with nostalgia bait and referencing it’s 80s counterpart (granted MLB doesn’t have an 80s counterpart to compare it to)like the Sven cameo in an alternate reality was fine, but when it introduced Romelle or had Pidge cosplay as her 80s version it started to feel like “hey remember this character or moment from the 80s show you should like it because we referenced it” without it having payoff or reason to exist
Unfortunately, that’s a thing reboots do in general.
I like Star Trek, but I’ve rolled my eyes a few times whenever a legacy character makes an appearance. It just makes the writers seem insecure that their characters can’t hold a show on their own, so they need to bring in characters people actually like in order to get more Paramount+ members.
We’ve had four new shows in the past five years (Discovery, Picard, Lower Decks), and all of them heavily involve older characters in some way.
Voltron is the same, as there were minor moments that felt less like fanservice and more like pandering, like when Voltron used its iconic Blazing Sword exactly once, and never again, and like you said, only introduced Romelle for two things: Fanservice, and to expose Lotor.
If you want to include fanservice, you need to make sure your product can stand on its own, and unless the story calls for it, use it conservatively.
Discovery’s main character is Spock’s adopted sister who, much like his dyslexia, has never been mentioned once in any episode or movie prior, and the second season gave focus to Captain Pike
Picard is obviously a sequel to The Next Generation following former Admiral Picard teaming up with Seven of Nine and running into other characters like Riker, Troi Data, Icheb, and even Hugh
A big part of Lower Decks’ storyline revolved around a main character temporarily serving abord Riker and Troi’s ship, and said main character later gets to meet Tom Paris from Voyager
Right out of the gate, Prodigy has a hologram of Captain Janeway act as the mentor to the kids abord the Protostar, and a later episode has a character running the Kobayashi Maru simulation on the Holodeck with a crew consisting of holograms of Uhura, Scotty, Crusher, Odo, and Spock, with almost all of their dialogue being reused from earlier episodes and movies. Although it at least made sense here as this show was aimed at children, and was most likely their introduction to Star Trek as a whole. Plus, Holo-Janeway is a blast to watch.

If you want to include fanservice, you need to make sure your product can stand on its own first, and unless the story calls for it, use it conservatively.

The Doctor decided to teach Seven of about humanity. In that process, he falls in love with her. If he keeps teaching her about humanity, and dating, while wanting to date her, it feels like he could then teach her to date him.
And that's icky feeling to me. I feel like it could have been done well, with more communication and honesty about "It wouldn't be right if I continue to treat our relationship like a mentor and student, because I have feelings for you."
But that requires a level of emotional maturity the Doctor doesn't have, because he's still trying to figure out how to be a person.
(fantastizing about Seven naked also felt kind of icky, he's her doctor and her mentor).
Seven doesn't seem to have any romantic feelings for the Doctor (or Chakotay or really...anyone until she's on Star Trek: Picard).
Janeway or Kim or Paris could have taken over teaching Seven to be human (even Tuvok, Tuvok is a great mentor) and freed them up to date.
I liked B'Elanna and Seven, because they're both rather terrible at relationships and B'Elanna never took any responsibility to teach Seven anything. She does, but she's definitely not in an explicit relationship of "I am your teacher".
And doctors are in love with their patients all the time (Beverly and Jean-Luc, Paul and Hugh, Julian and Garak, but each time it's much more reciprocated, and the other adult isn't in a specifically designed caring role with power over the other.).
Tumblr media
#967
If we're talking about Seven ships only relating to Voyager, Seven and the Doctor made more sense and should've been endgame rather than Seven and Chakotay, which unlike Seven and the Doctor, had zero romantic build-up and chemistry.

21 answers for a fanfic 2021
1. fandoms you wrote for this year
Star Trek: Voyager
Star Trek: Picard
Star Trek: Lower Decks
Star Trek: The Next Generation
Ted Lasso
2. favorite fic you wrote this year
I’m really proud of The Autobiography of Kirsten Clancy. I’ve always wanted to write a character backstory, and am grateful to have had the opportunity.
3. favorite fic you read this year
I fangirled — hard — for Who Shot AR’s Everything Will Come Right (If You Only Believe), a Julius Eaton/Kay Eaton origin story from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine’s “Far Beyond the Stars” universe. I misted up for parts of @marymoss1971’s The Inspiration, in which newly minted Captain Kathryn Janeway visits a mentor, Captain Benjamin Maxwell, who is in prison due to the events of TNG’s “The Wounded.” I, of course, delighted in @ussjellyfish bringing Kirsten and Matthew Clancy into her Star Trek: Janeways universe with her delightfully naughty Unscheduled Time and sweet what we can. Oh, and the Michael Burnham & Paul Stamets conversation in SiderumInCaelo’s i don’t forgive you (but please don’t hold me to it) was exactly the between-the-seasons discussion I needed for those two characters.
4. favorite opening line/scene you wrote this year
I’m pleased with both opening scenes of Fly Me to the Moon, a non-linear Kathryn Janeway/Tom Paris story that examines four universes of their relationship — three canon and one AU.
5. favorite ending line/scene you wrote this year
Again, I’m pleased with both endings to Fly Me to the Moon. I love the feeling of tying up a story with a little bow, and I think I did it well on that one.
6. a trope you wrote this year
I actually kicked off the year with a Kathryn Janeway/Tom Paris four times, one time: Console Me (Four Times Paris and Janeway Almost Had Sex and One Time They Did).
7. pairings you wrote this year
Just looking at main pairings, not sub-pairings, I wrote:
Jet Manhaver & Tom Paris
Kirsten Clancy/Original Character (Matthew Clancy)
Raffi Musiker/Seven of Nine
Kirsten Clancy & Jean-Luc Picard
Kirsten Clancy & Sonya Gomez
Kirsten Clancy & Edward Jellico
Kirsten Clancy & Simon Tarses
(untagged, but I’m proud of it) Kirsten Clancy & Tom Paris
Kathryn Janeway/Tom Paris
Kathryn Janeway & Tom Paris
Chakotay/Kathryn Janeway
Tom Paris/B’Elanna Torres
Kathryn Janeway/B’Elanna Torres
Kathryn Janeway/Kes
Kathryn Janeway/Harry Kim
The Doctor (Star Trek)/Kathryn Janeway
Keeley Jones/Roy Kent (Ted Lasso)
8. a fic regret from this year
I don’t know.
9. a song that helped you write
Fly Me to the Moon (of course). That fic had an entire playlist. And I have, ahem, four Clancy playlists.
10. total number of fics you posted
I think 14 [edit: 15 — another little one happened]. (It’s a little hard to tell with so many crossovers within the Trekverse and one fic that carries over from last year.)
11. total number of words you posted
92,769 [edit: 92,960 — yes, the little addition was very little]
12. most popular fic written this year
By hits, kudos, subscriptions, bookmarks, and comment threads, Fly Me to the Moon was my most popular fic this year, which makes me happy because I am very proud of it. (Shout out to beta extraordinaire @caladeniablue! 🎉)
13. least popular fic written this year
It’s a little tougher to tell least popular, but I think In Bed has my lowest hit and kudos count. That’s okay. I knew my E-rated vignettes that dip into The Autobiography of Kirsten Clancy universe through the perspective of Matthew Clancy wouldn’t get a lot of traffic. I’m pleased with the work, though, and that’s important.
14. longest completed fic you posted this year
That would be The Autobiography of Kirsten Clancy, at 32,536 words.
15. shortest completed fic you posted this year
As a stand-alone story, the shortest is Starlight, a 154-word, G-rated, Chakotay/Kathryn Janeway musing on the ways different people see and express love.
16. favorite character to write about this year
Kirsten Quayle Clancy
17. a fic you didn’t expect to write
All of them.
18. most memorable comment/review
So many! When Fly Me to the Moon comments became a forum for Tom Paris character analysis, I could feel my fandom soul begin to ascend. Also, every time someone commented some variation of, “How did you make me care about Kirsten Clancy?” or, “I don’t usually ship this, but …” or, “I’m so happy you wrote this friendship/scenario/pairing,” my writerly heart filled with joy. I don’t want to single anyone out, but comments wishing for an Autobiography of Kirsten Clancy book club, comments from regular commenters who said they tried something new because I wrote it, and comments from re-readers were all especially meaningful.
19. trends you noticed in your writing this year
I don’t know why but, across three stories, I wrote experiences during and immediately after Wolf 359 for Kathryn Janeway, Tom Paris, Raffi Musiker, and Kirsten Clancy, plus glimpses for Nick Locarno and Edward Jellico, the latter of whom was in two stories, so he got two experiences — and two characterizations.
20. fics you wanted to write but didn’t
Real life has been demanding this year. I have a few fics I hope to finish next year.
21. something you want to write next year
I’d like to finish my post-Endgame Kathryn Janeway/Mark Johnson story. I also have a few other WIPs rattling around. But I just don’t know.
If anyone has questions on any of that, please ask. Also, if you write, I’d love to read your fanfic 2021 answers!

Mobile Masterlist
I figured it might be easier for my readers to find my previous imagines if I make a mobile masterlist that I update at the same time as I update my desktop one. So here it is! I’ll add to it when I post new imagines, so it should always be up to date. Some imagines are listed in multiple series if the character is found in both - like Q or Pike, for example.
If you enjoy my work, please consider supporting me on Ko-Fi (it’s as low as $1CAD and it’ll go towards my education funds) or check out my commissions! Please check my bio and title to see if requests are open before requesting.

Note
seven of nine for the ask game 💞
a song that reminds me of them
in cold light by vanbur
what they smell like
@tomvorikandharry summed this up quite nicely. i guess in fanfiction terms i’d probably say something like ‘metal and electricity with a hint of something uniquely her own’ lmao
an otp
i love what i’ve seen of seven/raffi, but i’m also a fan of b’elanna/7. i am also now slightly obsessed with the idea of kira nerys and seven meeting but probably as a brotp.
a notp
chakotay/7. it’s just,,, not good. after all the development of janeway/chakotay, too ☹
favorite platonic/familial relationships
naomi wildman and icheb! i love how seven gets to take on an older sibling/mentor role. i think her relationship with icheb really helps seven begin to understand and heal from her own trauma as well as helping icheb through his. i also love the way seven and janeway learn a lot from each other about humanity and identity.
a headcanon that is popular in the fandom but that i disagree with
not sure! but i do have one that i absolutely agree with, which is that seven is autistic 😊
the position they sleep in
i feel like after years of sleeping upright in her regeneration alcove it’d be weird for her to sleep in any other position than flat on her back. that or upright and held up by something (i’m picturing the way astronauts sleep in low/no grav in those lil sleeping pack with strap things).
a crossover au i’d love to see them in
i want seven and spock to meet. i think that’d be neat. but also seven and kira (i’m hopeless) so seven on ds9 would be cool as heck. except sisko might not be super thrilled about having an ex-borg around, at least at first.
my favorite outfit they’ve ever worn
other than her wearing a proper uniform… i love everything she wears in the killing game episodes. the silvery dress?? the beret and floral dress? the black turtleneck?? all iconic and i’m v gay. i haven’t seen picard yet but i also love her outfit in that. it feels very authentically her.
send me a character ✨
