I'm in a mood to write meta/ramble about my opinions so here's why I think DPxDC fics that put Johnstantine in a paternal/uncle/mentor role are fine actually.

"But John is canonically a godawful father with little to no interest in parenthood" yes, that's why it's funny to throw teenagers at him. He is imminently tormentable. "Bad things happening to John Constantine" is approximately 72% of plots in Hellblazer. Also, Dadantine fics tend to be ones where Danny's parents react violently to him being a ghost and Vlad’s canonical villain motivation is that he wants to be Danny’s dad. The fact that Constantine is a) not his dad and b) has no interest in being his dad immediately makes him a relatively safe adult. Also, subjecting a noir horror protagonist to cartoon teen shenanigans is funny simply by virtue of the contrast. Juxtaposition is hilarious and I primarily read and write fanfic for my own amusement.

"Okay, bad things happening to Johnstantine is 72% Hellblazer plots, but he brings most of that upon himself and the other 28% of Hellblazer plots involve nice or neutral things happening that he proceeds to irretrievably fuck up" yes and after 40-odd years of this I am BORED. A constant never-ending tragedy train gets boring. Also I like Johnstantine, if he wasn't a likable scumbag he wouldn't be such a compelling character. Maybe I want him to have nice things sometimes! Also, by virtue of cartoon protagonist plot armor, if anybody could survive being in John's "I Kill Everything Good In My Life" radius it would be Danny Phantom.

I'm not saying you have to like Dadantine dpxdc fics, I'm just saying that they can be done in a way that makes sense for John's character. I personally feel that those are the ones where they tame each other like feral cats and they both think the other one is the feral cat.

she told him they were going to a really cool club for sexy singles and instead it was the PTSD and Adult Trauma Survivors weekly meeting in the church of St Mary's. actually 13 had never been there either she just figured if it was a group session she could make sure he didn't climb out a window or something. (she had treats snacks in her pockets. just went full taking the dog to the vet about it)

they both thought the whole group therapy thing was super lame and couldn't look at one another because they kept pulling faces and laughing, but UNO REVERSE 13 actually did like some of the stuff the group councilor was saying and there was a woman there who was also coping with her brother's recent death and she got pretty into it. chase meanwhile didn't say a word buuuuut didn't hate it. and so they kind of dared one another to go back next week. like i thought it was stupid but you liked it, so……

for at least a few weeks everyone thought they were dating and that chase was just there to support his partner so it was very embarrassing when 13 had to admit actually a) they were not dating. ever and b) she was here to support him, she's chase's support, he's the one who needs therapy — yes janice she would like to share her story though.

Like, pre-April, they probably would view the days as miserable, since as turtles they’re likely more susceptible to the cold and back then they probably had much less to keep warm with.

Yeah! I don't want to draw focus away from Poppy, but I do want to put focus on her and Cooper's siblinghood, especially in how it parallels Gristle & Branch's brotherhood. An idea I've been toying with for World Tour is that Cooper, instead of running off in secret, asks Poppy if he can come with on her journey to try and unite the genres. I think Biggie would still be there as well, but adding Cooper into the mix could allow for some interesting character interactions!
