I love it tho, I'm low-key a red flag because WHY do I wanna join them and perform acts that will literally either end up in me being miserable and pathetic or absolutely ecstatic, even when I do feel miserable i would let it consume me so much that I'd feel too numb with the feeling to feel anything else, I'm probably going in a psychoanalysis episode but that's literally all us obsessive academics.
''the secret history vibe is studying hard and loving the classics'' so close! the secret history vibe is a close group of pretentious idiots who secretly hate each other murdering people for the vibe and ignoring the concepts of the moon landing and hypothermia

controversial opinions i have about ‘the secret history’ by donna tartt!
a) i don’t think henry actually loved camilla, at least not in the way camilla loved henry. when richard asks henry about why he is the way that he is and henry’s response is that the only time he’s actually felt something is when he killed that man, i believe henry had a god complex and didn’t actually know what it was to love someone. i think he was fonder of camilla than he was of anyone else, partially because she was a girl that leaned into being more feminine so henry saw her as somewhat of a doll, or something he could take care of rather than love.
b) camilla is not innocent, i don’t think it’s fair to her character to rule her off as a victim entirely, because while yes charles did abuse her, we don’t actually know whether or not she abused him, or the fact that their entire sexual relationship was non-consensual. francis tells richard that camilla leads him on which not only showcases how manipulative she is as a character but how she also uses her femininity as a tactic to be seen as non-threatening.
c) there is truly no villain in the novel, because while you could argue that yes bunny was a bigot and yes the rest of the history class was wrong for killing two people and yes julian was an adult that should have never let his students believe they were gods. at the end of the day, every character is morally bad/or grey in some instances. there is no true evil in the book except for their own perceptions of what occurred.
anyways feel free to disagree with these, if you so wish 🫶🏽

bro. bro you are romantisizing the secret history. bro you are enamored with the greek class just like richard. bro you are ignoring the bad things and creating aesthetics based on a book telling a murder of a young man. brother.

was it casual when you shoved him off the cliff and then stood over his corpse watching the warmth and light slowly fade from his familiar blue eyes was it casual when his father said you made his son the happiest he'd ever seen his baby boy was it casual when his parents gave you the honor of being the pallbearer when you stood amongst his brothers and carried the corpse you'd made to the hollowed ground was it casual when you were so lost in your own mind standing above his grave that you smeared the dirt of his grave across your chest (you killed him. it doesn't mean you didn't love him.)
