yes, i'm that girl that never stops about The Diviners Series!!
I really am just going to keep going on about this but literally…….. the diviners deserves that huge fanbase that series like six of crows or the raven cycle or any of those ya series has. the atmosphere and the characters and ships and plot and everything is amazing and I’ve been waiting and waiting for it to gain more traction but it hasn’t! and with the last book coming out in February I’m scared that now it’s never going to :( like where are my tragic sam and evie edits? where are my more than two accounts worth of fan art??? where are my people crying over henry and louis????? this book has a canonically depressed mc, a jewish boy exposing a government conspiracy targeting immigrants, a black healer from Harlem who loves his psychic little brother, a native american upcoming actress, a gay songwriter from the south, a chinese ace lesbian who LOVES science, and a socialist girl fighting against large corporations that mistreat and underpay their workers. also jericho but this post isn’t about him. not to mention that it’s set in 1920s new york with elements of horror and fantasy, with that found family trope and themes of America’s hypocrisy vs what America was theoretically established to be. libba bray created such a vibrant world with incredibly lovable character and I’m going to be so sad to say goodbye next year. anyway underrated ya, if ur on the fence or if this has been on your tbr and you’ve just never gotten to it (this book literally sat on my shelf for almost a year before I read but bc I kept putting it off whoops), here is ur message. read it!
#am i reblogging this again?#you betcha#and i will continue until the diviners gets the recognition it deserves#the diviners#evie o'neill#sam lloyd#henry dubois iv#henry dubois#memphis campbell#theta knight#louis bernard#ling chan#mabel rose#jericho jones

i love you forever Ness Arroyo and Wylan Van Eck, i love you forever queer boys who spat in their abusers/fathers faces and used their mothers' surnames, i love you forever boys who survived hell but remained good and kind, i love you forever boys who know the feeling of living without their moms only with their monster fathers. i love you forever boys who find love and fight for it. i love you forever boys who can put on a performance and lie and win when they need to. i love you forever boys who survived abuse and refused to die or be killed, boys who fought to stay alive. i love you forever hurt boys who managed to find love and happiness after all. i love you Ness Arroyo and Wylan Van Eck, two of my favorite boys from their respective book series.

PS. if this type of character is your comfort character as well, know they are also Aaron Warner from Shatter Me Series, Jude Duarte and Cardan Greenbriar from The Folk Of The Air Series, Henry DuBois IV and Evie O’Neill from The Diviners Series, James and Lydia Beaufort from Maxton Hall Trilogy-Save Me Series, Sydney Sage and Adrian Ivashkov from VA-Bloodlines, Maxon Schreave from The Selection Series.

For the ask meme! 🍍, 🍏, and 🍑?
Pineapple: What kind of AUs do you like? Are there any AUs you hate or just generally have beef with?
Wildly variable, I'm afraid, depending on the canon and what would be different from the canon. I don't know if there's any AU as a whole that I have beef with (the one fanfic I read where Viktor and Yuuri were doping still haunts me, though).
If we're getting personal, the one AU that I apply to almost every fandom, in the safety of my own head, is the one where characters have access to a psychic, who can show them other characters' perspectives or what's happening to they at times when they weren't there or couldn't see. I like to think of how characters peripheral to the action, whatever the action is, would react to it, so I do that a lot. I'll never write it down, it's just for me, but it's fun!
Green apple: Is there something you overuse, whether it’s a certain phrase, trope, or piece of punctuation?
I think I am also a semicolon-overuser. For The Arrangement, my editor went through and highlighted every time I used the words "utter(ly)" or "mere(ly)" and I almost cringed out of my skin, though that's a relic of my "period" style, not all my writing. I also like whichever dash this is: —
Peach: If you could make a connection between your favorite character and another work you care about (whether a crossover/fusion or a wonderfully “pretentious” literary reference) what would it be? How would it work?
Oooh, good question....
I'll do two. For Chris Giacometti... Maybe Maurice, or Bright Young Things? I haven't actually seen BYT, just gifsets of Michael Sheen, but I deeply want to throw Chris into the interwar homosexual scene. And that gifset of Michael Sheen is almost exactly how I pictured Chris in Blackbird.
And for the blorbo currently occupying all my thoughts, Henry DuBois IV, I want him in modern times or close to. I don't think this really counts, but I've been listening to a lot of Elton John while rotating him in my mind like a rotisserie chicken, and some sort of Bernie Taupin-style collaboration would be fun for him, given that he canonically writes the music to his boyfriend's lyrics. Not really a fictional work, but it's the best I can think of.
Thanks!

bullet points
tw: cheating, hyper sexuality
○ ○ born on a picturesque late spring day in quebec, isla dubois’ life was perfect from the moment she began it. with two supermodel-attractive parents who both happened to own their own highly successful businesses, the girl was born wanting for nothing. think burberry baby shoes and ralph lauren dress as her 'going home from the hospital' outfit.
○ isla was born the final child of Henri and Celia, who already had four rambunctious boys at home. being both the baby and the only girl, she quickly learned the power she wielded when a pout and big eyes could get her what she wanted. and she always got what she wanted.
○ being raised like that, she has a tendency to sound really…..entitled. honestly, she doesn’t mean to sound like an absolute stuck up bitch, but that’s her language. the girl can be very caring and sincere if someone can stand the outer shell of some annoying ignorance about the suffering of others.
○ since she was young, isla has loved all things stereotypically girly. pearls, lace, pink, frills: you name it, she loves it. she is always dressed to the nines. coquette has been her style since high school and she never plans on giving it up.
○ the move to aurora bay from quebec in 2014 wasn't much of a change for her. the nannies and housekeepers continued to be her surrogate parents and was still given everything her little heart could desire. it was now just all happening in california.
○ although the move brought them to a mainly english speaking state, the dubois insisted that french still be spoken at home. needless to say, isla still carries her heavy french accent. she doesn't mind it, though. she believes it adds to the mystique.
○ they say you’re either a horse girl, a mermaid girl or a princess girl growing up but isla opted for a secret forth option: the dancer girl. thank you for the music by abba must have been written about her since it seemed that she too had truly been dancing before she could walk. by the age of two she was placed in dance classes, and the dubois' knew they were never looking back. isla's whole heart and soul lives in dance. there was nowhere she felt more free nor more herself than in a dance studio
○ her love of dance and a developing competitive nature that thrived off the need to be the best at everything poised isla perfectly to enter the competitive dance world. she started going for titles at six with her dance company’s elite team and would prove to be a reliable winner as the years went on. the girl has lost count of how many titles she has won and is currently storing at least three rubbermaid boxes full of trophies and crowns in her parents’ attic (since only so many will fit in with her apartment's aesthetic). 'first place’ was like her drug. and the high? it continued to come as easily as everything else did for her. (also, yes, her mom would have been cast on dance moms. 100%)
○ once isla hit puberty, the true devilish side came out. an obsession with men (and their attention) bloomed. she knew she was beautiful and she knew she could get any man she wanted if she tried. this way of thinking has yet to subside. if you identify as male (and straight/bi, she ain’t no reverse james charles) there is about a hundred percent chance she will try and hit on you. partner or not. (isla is also a bit of a notorious homewrecker.)
○ after putting her in modeling classes and acting classes on top of her dance classes, isla quickly fell in love with acting. she recently graduated with her BA (triple majored in screen acting, stage acting and dance (she won't be the dumb blonde stereotype, no thank you)) and has since become a SAG-AFRA actress, starring in a few short films. but considering who her family is (and who she's willing to convince), it's only a matter of time until she's in the blockbusters.
○ having cultivated this obsession for boys, isla has developed a new talent: using them for her own gain. she is a serial dating manipulator. it was only a matter of time, considering the 'casting couch' phenomenon that lurks in the hollywood culture. if you have something to offer her, isla will get close to you and sexually/romantically manipulate you into giving her that advantage. after she’s gotten that, she’ll expertly make the break off seem like the "right thing at this time.”
○ her little "talent" or "industry hack" has become a little more nefarious, however. now it's not so much a game of "who can offer me something" but "who will be the most fun to toy with"? isla has been breaking hearts for fun and there's no signs of stopping her now.
Wanted Connections
the best friends ;; her partner in crime, the ying to his yang. the pair or more that are typically attached by the hip, consult each other, and couldn’t live without one another.
the partier ;; the sound of too loud music and the taste of warm, cheap beer are the defining characteristics of this friendship. these two may give each other recognition in the halls, but as soon as the word ‘party’ is involved, these two are together. the best of friendships always start smashed.
her girls ;; not many women like isla, but these girls are that exception. her ride or dies. she’d kill or hide a body for these women.
the one? ;; these two flirt so much, they might as well just get it over with and date. however, many steps have to be taken to get there. are they willing to make those steps?
the big ex ;; these two seemed to be so in love. …or not. maybe they ended on a good note, maybe it went down in flames. all that’s known for certain is that they went from the cutest couple to barely speaking.
fwb ;; having a friend is good. having a friend who has sex with you is better. no strings attached.
just a hookup ;; they’re for sex and nothing else. harsh but true.
the toy ;; isla’s own little toy. she uses them for whatever reason and makes them think they’re her one and only. will she break her shiny new toy? maybe. she’s not known for being careful.
the scorned ;; whether this is an ex hookup’s partner or someone she used and threw away, she burned this person. all she can seem to give them is a shrug emoji.
HMU! ~Lo

“And yet all along, Bonciani notwithstanding, the king seems to have been thinking of marriage: to Gabrielle. Signs, large and small, of Henri IV’s intention to marry her abound. Sometime between 1593 and 1598, he inserts a poem in a letter to her asking her to share his crown. A painting of Gabrielle “en Diane” by Ambroise Dubois, recently returned to the Louvre, is also suggestive of his plans. Although we associate Diana with Diane de Poitiers—that is, the royal mistress—mythological themes were very fluid, and Marie de Médicis would also adopt Diana, among other goddesses, as an emblem. A Diana gallery would be installed at Fontainebleau during that queen’s reign, a gallery that may or may not have been begun for Gabrielle. Another piece of evidence is a copy of an earlier painting by Clouet, possibly representing Diane de Poitiers as Diana bathing with her nymphs while observed by a man on horseback, dressed in Henri II’s colors of black and white. The copy exchanges Gabrielle for Diane with Henri IV as the man on horseback.
A coin with the head of Henri IV on one side and Gabrielle on the other, struck in 1597, also bears witness to the seriousness of his intent. Gabrielle began to occupy the position of queen in public, waited on by the bowing and scraping Duchess of Guise, eating what took her fancy with one hand while holding the other out to be kissed by the king, reports L’Estoile.
[...] during a “digression,” the king began to praise Gabrielle, letting slip his intention to marry her, which he had intended to keep secret. Alarmed, the cardinal immediately begged leave to return to the pope. Realizing his error, Henri IV sent Nicolas Brûlart de Sillery as a diplomat to Rome, instructing him, at least according to De Thou, to pretend that the king “had changed his mind regarding Gabrielle d’Estrées” so as to obtain the annulment.”

Hello there non-existent diviners fans
I'm listening to the la la land soundtrack and some of the songs made me think of the characters from the diviners series.
Another day or sun - just generally the style of the opening of the book. The way the dreams of people are described.
Somone in the crowd - Mabel, Theta and Evie getting ready for Theta's prefomence.
Sound of mia and sabastian - the song Henry and Louis used to play, mayhaps.
A lovely night - Theta and Memphis flirting. That's it. Just them flirting after escaping from the bar.
City of stars - Henry angsting about Louis. (I found an amazing acoustic cover of this song by Case Eagleson on youtube and now I'm crying)
If you haven't read the diviners you should definitely go read it now!!!!!!!! I'm serious. Now. It's the best.
#holy shit I found another cover of city of stars and it's even more perfect#it's by someone called gavin james#the diviners#the diviners series#evie o'neill#sam loyd#mabel rose#memphis campbell#theta knight#henry dubois iv#I'm serious go go read it

I’m currently halfway through this book. I’m really enjoying it, but I’m scared for all my favs! I can’t wait to see how this series ends!!
Also once I finish it I can look for fan art of the characters, I usually wait until I’ve finished a series to do that so I don’t come across any spoilers.
