crawling out of the rock i was hiding under just to share with you the hotness of this, which i've been staring at in the past 2 days or so 😳🥵😍...
it's from yu hewei's new movie that's going to premiere next month. it's about the battle of hengyang against the japanses invasion during WWII. the trailer is pretty gory for a cmovie, but it probably should be because it is "the most savage battle ever fought in the smallest battlefield with the greatest casualties in the military history of the world (via battle of hengyang's wikipedia page)".

Roar Of The Water Dragon (Shui Long Yin)
Tumblr media
Today, Luo Yunxi's next big drama was officially announced with him in the lead role. And just because I had so much fun staring at the poster the last time, I'm going to do it again.
We have some of the same elements as in the last poster: The water, as well as a fox dragon with antlers in the foreground. The man riding the dragon already resembles Luo Yunxi. This is Tang Lici, the main character of this story. This time, the hair isn't completely white yet, rather an ombre of white tips and black roots. I really hope this means he will use his natural hairline instead of a wig for parts of the show.
Tumblr media
Let's look at the details. His eyes are closed and he is reaching out. Just like in the first poster, he looks calm, while everything around him is in movement. There are red, gold and green ribbons surrounding him and some golden glow around his left hand. Next to his shoulder there are loose red feathers and further on top small white-golden birds following the fox dragon. They remind me of swallow, but with fantasy elements. Some of the green-blue ribbons turn into waves further up the painting.
Tumblr media
Next to the dragon are what looks like a couple of significant locations. On the bottom is a ship in a stormy sea. The figurehead resembles the dragon. Next to the ship are fish flying above the wave, which resemble the birds. This might mean a close connection between sea and sky in the symbolism of the show. Just like the flying water dragon.
Tumblr media
There are five other locations between the mountains under the moonlight. The one on the left looks like a bridge, the one on the right like a high tower. The one in the middle, I do recognize.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's the Hengyang sect complex, Otter Studio build for TTEOTM and which has since then been used in many other productions, such as My Journey to You and Mysterious Lotusbook Case.
Tumblr media
On top of the poster is a golden glowing lotus blossom. Inside of it sits a man in what looks like meditation position. It's hard to see clear, but it looks Tang Lici, only this time dressed very differently. I'm not sure if I have seen anything similar in cdramas before, especially his hair and crown. It looks almost South Asian to me. It would be funny if it's actually Thai, after Leo became cultural friendship ambassador for China-Thailand. Then again, most of his recent activities ended up somehow connected to this drama, and its production and broadcasters.
The warm, golden light and the position makes me think of enlightenment and even godhood. I will quote a post I found on Twitter. But be aware, that his could be considered a spoiler:
Tumblr media
Going from this, Tang Lici might have a long journey ahead of him, that will turn him from a troublemaker into a saint, by overcoming his own worldly obsessions. Sounds familiar?
Anyway, I'm super excited about the show! Booting ceremony is rumored to be in early December. By then, we might get more info on the rest of the cast. Maybe my wish comes true, and there really won't be a romantic focused story!

Okay, round 3! D: I ran this poll for the first time last year, but it only got 7 votes. :( I wanted to run it again this year in the hopes that it would get more, so I reposted it yesterday with the options slightly changed. But then I read the poll options out loud to my friend last night, and I realized the cultivation sects were both the first and last option! >.<
So, here's the poll with the options from last year only slightly reworded (and therefore, without the Moonshadow Guards from yesterday). If you're one of the two people who voted yesterday, please feel free to vote again! <3

Chinese warships have been spotted off Australia's northeast coast: the Chinese vessels are the PLA-N Jiangkai-class frigate named Hengyang, the PLA-N Renhai cruiser named Zunyi and the PLA-N Fuchi-class replenishment vessel Weishanhu. 2025. Source: Daily Mail

P.S. The West (USA) betrayed Ukraine, now think very carefully whether you will not be cheated by the " best Ally" there in Asia as well... China's expansion in Asia is NOT a European problem. We have enough of our own troubles...!
European warships must stay in Europe and protect European shores!

random novel excerpts #5, because ofc i had to pull up my favourite wanmian bit upon seeing @difeisheng's post (this is book 2 ch 7, for those keeping score):
Qiao Wanmian did not answer. A long while later, she asked, softly: "Do you hate me?"
"I did, once." With a faint smile, he said: "There were a few years when I hated everyone."
She nodded, slowly; that she understood…
Only to hear him then say: "But now all I fear is that Xiao Zijin and Qiao Wanmian cannot stay together always, til death do you part."
She listened, the moment hanging still; nodding, again, before suddenly shaking her head: "You are not Xiangyi."
Li Lianhua smiled, so very light: "Indeed…"
Lifting her head, she looked dazedly at him, and said softly: "Xiangyi never forgave anyone."
Li Lianhua nodded. "Nor did he ever tend the garden."
The hint of a smile touched Qiao Wanmian's lips at last. "He never wore shabby clothes."
Li Lianhua smiled. "He almost never did sleep."
She exhaled a light sigh, tear tracks still damp on her face. "He always had unending matters to tend to, almost never slept, always had some enemy or other, excelled at spending money, was always ordering people around, sending them here and there and everywhere… but always managed to make a spectacular affair of it."
Li Lianhua sighed, and said almost to himself: "And here I am terribly broke, wanting nothing so much as a quiet place to sleep in, and without much enemies to name, either. Oh, yes – the two pots of rhododendrons in my room are in full bloom, it's quite the lively sight, do you want to see it?"
Qiao Wanmian was still smiling, faintly; in this moment it was as if her heart had woken to something open and bright, and those events of old that had weighed on her for ten years, those things she never could let go – all of it dissipated in this one moment. The man that stood before her was an old companion, a friend; even a maestro in his own way. "I'd like a look."
Li Lianhua straightened out his sleeves, and said apologetically: "Give me a moment."
Qiao Wanmian dried her tears on a sleeve, brushed the dust off herself, and abruptly felt her earlier self to be quite laughable. Seeing Li Lianhua hurry around the building to the dustpans with a wicker basket on his back, she couldn't help finding it funny – couldn't help but wonder: if Fu Hengyang came to know that Li Xiangyi had spent an entire afternoon tidying up the candles that he'd painstakingly arranged to proclaim the resurrection of Sigu Sect, what would he possibly think? But then she saw Li Lianhua waving her over before she could get any further, and so she followed.
On stepping into Li Lianhua's room, she looked at those two potted 'rhododendrons' for quite a while. Both pots boasted fresh yellow flowers, open in full and rich splendour; they had indeed been well and meticulously cared for, and were growing with much vigour.
But now Qiao Wanmian couldn't help but ask, after an age of staring: "These are rhododendrons?"
Li Lianhua paused, baffled, in his tracks. "Fang Duobing said they were… I dug them up from the foot of the mountain, there's a big patch blooming there."
Qiao Wanmian coughed faintly, and said with infinitely kind patience: "These are daylilies, the farmers plant them for… for… anyway, you'd better return them soon as you can."
"Ah." Li Lianhua stared at the 'rhododendrons' he'd been tending to for the better half of a month, and said with an air of apology: "I should've known rhododendrons don't bloom this large…"
Qiao Wanmian truly could not hold back any longer, and laughed aloud. Looking at those two pots of 'rhododendrons', their gazes met over smiles.
Outside, not too far away, a person stood atop the trees, and watched the two from a distance. That person wore golden-edged robes of purple, a figure regal and well-built; he would have been of handsome strength, save for the extreme paleness of his face as he stared dazedly at the pair in the room, unknown thoughts crossing his mind.
In the room, Li Lianhua looked at the daylilies he'd so diligently planted, and suddenly asked with great seriousness: "If the daylilies are already blooming, that means the weather is about to turn chill – are the winters cold up on this mountain?"
Qiao Wanmian paused in surprise. "Cold? Here?"
Li Lianhua nodded with great haste. "Does it snow?"
She gave an answering nod. "It snows."
He cringed faintly. "I don't like the cold."
She smiled. "Xiangyi never feared the cold."
Li Lianhua sighed. "I don't just fear the cold – I fear death, too."

Till the end of the moon review
I recently rewatched the drama and felt like reviewing the first Cdrama I ever watched. After watching some cdramas in the past 7 months since I first watched the drama, I now trust myself to write a decent enough review after somewhat familiarizing myself with the genre and overall cdrama space.
Rating: 9.5/10 (1000 bonus points for searing itself in my mind and staying there even after 7 months)
Acting: 10/10
Story: 9/10
Chemistry: 100000000/10
OST: 10/10
Costumes: 10/10
Hair & Makeup: 9.5/10
Production/Set Design: 10/10
Visual Effects/CGI: 10/10
Rewatch Value: 10/10
Li Susu, an immortal time travels 500 years into the past to prevent the ascension of the Devil god, who goes on to destroy the world in the future. It's a story of love and hate, good and evil, redemption and damnation. The characters are very well conceptualized and depicted beautifully by talented actors, stunning costumes, really good hair and makeup, and great cinematography. The amazing production and set design along with impressive visual effects and CGI really immerse the audience in the world of TTEOTM. This was a high budget drama and it shows... each and every frame of the drama, it feels lavish. If you are even a little bit interested go watch the first episode and l promise you'll be hooked and end up finishing the drama.
Now unto my spoiler filled thoughts:
I find it interesting that the typical backstory themes and some character arcs of the male lead and the female lead have been swapped here. The FL usually has a dead parent or abusive household or terrible luck and so on. The ML usually comes to the FL's rescue or stands up for her and so on. We all know that Tantai Jin is Disney Princess coded given his dead mother, abusive and neglectful upbringing and his animal telepathy powers. LSS both as Ye Xiwu and LSS repeatedly saves TTJ and stands for him. While TTJ also saves her many times, he does not get a chance to stand up for her because she usually takes care of herself and she is not suspected or wrongfully accused where she would need someone to support her. Also, TTJ basically became a part of LSS's family as her uncle took him under his wing and he promised to stay in Hengyang Sect with her in ep 35 before all hell breaks loose. And who can forget that LSS marks TTJ with her Phoenix mark, typical ML behavior.
Their romance is my ultimate enemies to lovers pairing. It has just the right amount of fighting, messiness, animosity and angst for me. I feel that other pairings don't have enough of it for me to consider them as an enemies-to-lovers couple. Their visuals, their chemistry, their acting and the story everything was so great. Who else has three epic weddings in one drama? I am still not able to move on from this couple and drama.
While the misunderstandings were obviously supposed to lead to a turning point in the story, I feel like it was in character for them to jump to conclusions and assume the worst without fully thinking things through and which then led to them acting rashly. I mean both TTJ and LSS had bad history between them so in the early stages of their relationship where their trust in each other was shaky, it's understandable that they were prone to misunderstandings. Also, they're both not good at communicating with each other. In the mortal arc, LSS was never fully honest with TTJ and they never addressed their past misdeeds properly (like OG Ye Xiwu was very cruel to TTJ and he never talked to her about it and just brushed it off). In the immortal arc, TTJ deceived LSS when he became the Devil God.
For the most part the story was gripping, progressed at a good pace and conveyed many themes that become apparent on rewatches. Though it was obvious that the last 5 episodes and the ending were rushed because the censorship rules changed as they went into production. This was one of those dramas that needed at least 5-10 more episodes to properly flesh out the story. It was a missed opportunity that we didn't get to see LSS ruling the Demon realm and Ami's antics.
Another victim of the decreased episode count is the arc of the second leads. Tbh, I wish that Pian Ran and Ye Qingyu were the SLs but I think I would have enjoyed seeing the complete character arc of Xiao Lin/Gongye Jiwu and Ye Bingchang/Mo Nv and the resolution between them. That said it was appalling that they didn't bring back Pian Ran and Ye Qingyu in the immortal arc. I really missed their dynamic with each other and with the main leads. It is disappointing that they didn't even get an open/ambiguous ending to give us some closure and satisfaction.
The actress did a phenomenal job in making us hate her as Ye Bingchang and Tian Huan. Those characters as villians really worked as they were in a way the ones who had the markings of the female lead (these characters at the start of their stories could easily be heroines in any other story) but they turn into villians. Tantai Minglang was a good, serviceable villian and the actor did a lot with how little he was given. Di Mian was selfish and manipulative traitor who was almost scarily competent. I mean he did achieve what he wanted by becoming the Devil God and opening the Tongbei formation. The point of Devil God as a villian is not his character and his motivations but rather he represents our inner demons and how each of us has the power to overcome them.
Out of all the dramas I've watched, only TTEOTM's entire OST is on my regular playlist to listen to. Every time I listen to "Let's be like this for 10,000 years", I feel the love and tragedy of Sang Jui and Ming Ye's story all over again. It's impressive that a song can make you relive those feelings and the story every time you listen to it. All the songs fit wonderfully in the scenes they're played over and also make us feel those emotions again when listening to them separately.
On my first watch, the dream arc felt a little out of place and jarring, which, in hindsight, was probably due to the fact that it was my first cdrama. Upon rewatch I've come to appreciate that it gives a look into the age of Gods and it shows that the Devil God was so powerful that to stop him the Gods had to sacrifice themselves and only Ming Ye was able to survive. The action sequences here are just magnificent to watch and they definitely seem movie level. It also serves as a warning to the audience, LSS and TTJ that they could also have a tragic end if they don't learn the lessons from it. Unfortunately, in the mortal arc they did have a tragic end. However, in the immortal arc, TTJ is able to learn from his experience as Ming Ye and succeeds in defeating the OG Devil God and becoming the Devil God himself with control over his own destiny.
One of the most prominent themes of the drama is redemption and that love and compassion are powerful enough to change a person's fate. The themes of Taoism and Buddhism are evoked throughout the drama. There are also many other minor themes like the food is used as a guesture kindness (when LSS first gives TTJ a proper meal), affection/care (when TTJ gave LSS the goose themed meal), love (when LSS gives badly cooked meals to TTJ), betrayal and trickery (the poisoned porridge) and comraderie, friendship, brotherhood and familial love (when TTJ shares meals with his sect brothers and master). Both TTJ and LSS have dead moms, terrible fathers and great adoptive dads (Zhao You and Qu Xuan Zi), these are just some observations I made.
I may not love the ending but I don't hate it either as it was obvious to me that they reunite once again and live happily as a family (the audio ending really makes it clear). Even though I'm irritated we don't get to see it, I'm still satisfied that we get a hopeful ending rather than a tragic one.
Until now I've mostly been lurking in fandom spaces by liking and very rarely commenting and reblogging but never posting my own original post. The fact that my first ever post is on TTEOTM shows how much I love it. I'll probably be posting more TTEOTM analysis stuff so be on the look out for that if you're interested. Also, I welcome your recommendations as I'm still a newbie to cdramas and kdramas.
You can also check out my costumed cdrama rankings here.

Commercial Flights Diverted After CCP Warships Begin Surprise Live-Fire Exercise Near Australia
Tumblr media

Commercial flight paths between Australia and New Zealand have been disrupted after Chinese warships began preparing to fire live ammunition as part of an apparent military exercise.
The three People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) vessels have traversed the Australian coastline for the past week with no indication of their motives, and came within 150 nautical miles (277 kilometres on land) of Sydney on Feb. 19.
Several flight have been re-routed, including Qantas and Emirates aircraft, following advice that the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) warships had been “live firing in international waters” on Feb. 21.
“As a precaution, we have advised airlines with flights planned in the area,” an Airservices Australia spokesperson said.
“We are also working together to coordinate advice to operators and pilots.”
Australian and New Zealand Defence Forces have been tracking the flotilla since last week.
The weapons firing is understood to be taking place 346 nautical miles (640 kilometres) off Eden, south of Sydney in New South Wales, according to a Defence Department spokesperson.
In a statement, Air New Zealand said it “has modified flight paths as needed to avoid the area, with no impact on our operations.”
Qantas and its subsidiary Jetstar told RNZ they are working with the Australian government to monitor the situation.
The small fleet called Task Group 107, includes the heavily armed Renhai-class cruiser (named Zunyi), a Jiangkai-class frigate (Hengyang), and the Fuchi-class replenishment vessel Weishanhu.

Late WIP Wednesday, featuring my first fill for @cdrama-action! This one is Till the End of the Moon, and the second one is going to be my first attempt at Mysterious Lotus Casebook.
---------------------
“What’s the use of a goddess who can’t even save the person she cares for most?” Li Susu held the scale out in front of her, watching the light refract off the vivid blue green of it. “Ming Ye, is this how you felt? Maybe we’re more alike than I thought…”
The scale warmed under her touch; or so she thought, but she was beginning to wonder if she was imagining those reactions; the flash of a glow, the moment of heat, the twinkle, so quick she could blink and miss it, as the scale elicited a short hum.
If Tantai Jin’s primordial spirit lingered within the scale, perhaps he had company in Ming Ye. Or had Ming Ye vanished for good, the day they’d entered Bo’re Dream? She hoped, if Tantai Jin was alone, he would be sleeping. He’d spent too much of his life alone.
Five hundred years, he’d searched for her in that horrible river, burning his body to waste over and over, only to be restored because of the immortal bone she’d forced into him. Although her heart ached over his absence, it was nothing compared to what he’d gone through for her, and she felt guilt gnaw at her over it. It’s not as if she’d asked him to. It wasn’t even necessary. She was alive and well in Hengyang Sect. She’d wanted him to live well when she left him behind in Jing Kingdom, but he had other ideas.
When she’d first found out about him searching for her soul in the Nether River, the sheer weight of it didn’t register. But now that he was gone, now that all she could do was think about him, as opposed to seeing him, as opposed to talking to him, it was almost suffocating to remember what he’d gone through.
If Tantai Jin had searched for her for five hundred years, maybe fate would have her do the same for him.
But she would find him.

Reactions and questions as I watch episode 3 of Cang Yue Jin Ming/Till the End of the Moon. (Possibility of spoilers ahead)
What... how is a frog alive and hopping around in the dead of winter? Actually, now that we mention it... how are all these birds alive in winter? Like I'll give that one crow a pass because it's a magical telepathic crow, but the frog??
He's basically an evil Disney princess
Can you even feel someone's temperature through their bangs?
X-D she absolutely should never ever work for a spy agency
Are they not cold!? I mean IRL, they're probably not... but look how heavily it's "snowing"!
I'm glad she's coming around to the "maybe treating people like absolute sh** will make them build resentment and cause them to lash out" idea...
I mean... sir, you do act very strangely... sigh. But I guess it's fair that he's super jaded and traumatized.
Oh dear... does she actually know what she's doing with those sewing supplies?
Sir! Sir! You are letting all the heat out! What is wrong with you people?
I like how she's trying to be kind to him, and he just thinks she's gone off the bender X-D
Oh no! The older brother is going to be a d*ck!
Awwwww the first time he's speaking up about being bullied is because someone f*cked up the pretty new coat his wife bought him <3
What's with the dramatic camera shot of his hand? What does this mean??
I like that the guys get some pretty, dangly hair accessories, too. Still not as elaborate and large as the ladies, but still - exciting stuff for me *kira eyes*
Sigh why do emperors always need to weaken their strongest military generals -_- (I mean... I get why... but these emperors need to watch more cdramas. Those ploys never end up well.)
Wtf. Who this? Shouldn't the maid have warned LSS/YXW that there was still a person living here?
D*** this nanny looks super young too. Just... everyone in Sheng Guo found the fountain of youth I guess.
The question still stands. Everyone seems to approve of Sixth Prince with YBC. Why aren't they already married? Oh I guess the emperor is hesitant because he's playing the paranoid emperor trope.
TTJ sweetie... how about we lie for now and then just not report anything -_-. TTJ too honesty for his own good. No wonder he didn't survive the palace.
I agree... Steward Wu does indeed talk too much.
But also, how did they get TTJ's level of volume back in the day? DId they have an ancient form of a blow dryer or hair spray? It looks fabulous.
Lol Steward Wu is a caricature of a bad guy and it's mildly amusing (for now... I'll probably get tired of it in 5 min)
ooooh no..... i needed trigger warning for that... warning for others that don't like bugs... a wasp flies into Steward Wu's ear >.< eeeuuughhhhh.... nuuuuuu (like it was fake looking, but it still freaks me out... nuuu why....)
oh.... well... guess I won't be getting tired of Steward Wu anymore...
oooh nooo.... another warning... they showed the wasp crawling back out T.T
I guess there were TTJ has been getting little moments of revenge before now. Or maybe he's only just started. Not clear. but d***.
Oh... Xiao Lin has been cultivating... so is he the shixiong????
Junior Martial Uncle is from Xiaoyao sect, but LSS called GYJW shixiong which would imply he's from the Hengyang sect... I'm so confused about the relationship of these two sects and also who is from what sect... Also, is Xiao Lin (sorry I can't use XL for anyone except Xie Lian) GYJW or not?? THE MYSTERIES!
LMAO junior martial uncle's face... he's like... "son... you are such a killjoy" X-D
KITTY!!!!!!!!
Oooh... YBC being kind of shady here... why not announce yourself? (Like I wouldn't either... but in cdramas this is usually sus)
I bet this an intentional misunderstanding. Like that magical crow ordered the wasp to attack Steward Wu and it wasn't actually TTJ's doing.
Nuuuuu he was just starting to build a little bit of trust toward her T.T.
Yeah... again... what's going on with that right hand of his. OH! Is that where the evil bone is!?
Oh. Previous theory canceled. TTJ did order the wasp. Womp womp.
YXW (thinking): gotta trick the truth out of him... YXW (speaking): you know anything about the dude dropping dead in the palace today?
Again... warning to all spy agencies throughout the universe... do not hire this woman X-D
Wow! She just outs herself. *face palms* This woman is on another level.
LMAO X-D. She's just sits and gets ready to enjoy his strip show X-D.
*watches as lady demon just clouds into the palace* But for real... what were they expecting regular mortal humans to do against a demon? *smh*
Oh no! The nanny!
hmmm... "This was mine to begin with" - what was?
OH! She's actually in PJs! And her hair accessory is out! Hurrah! But also at what point did she change/undress? She definitely got under the covers fully clothed and accessorized. Does Chuntao come in at night to get her into jammies?
Oh! There's something demonic inside her? The plot clumpens...
Oh my bad. This is Ye Bingchang. Huh! Even more sus and interesting.... The plot clumpens further...
X-D There's a minimum of 6 buns in that bowl. And then that's 7 lol.
I love that he just thinks she's off her rocker and has gone crazy X-D.
KITTY!
Omg I love Pang Ziyi.
Hmmm... he doesn't seem all that worried about rescuing YBC... was he just faking liking her? Or does he simply just prefer keeping his secret safe over liking her?
She stole his cat! X-D
Is this lady demon going to try and pick up TTJ for her garden and get caught or something as a result?
Wait... why would the nanny have memories of him eating that pastry? She wasn't there. ALso, why would she have memories of him kneeling on ice in Ye Manor? She def wasn't there... mentally or physically...
Really? She's afraid of a crow? Well... i guess they are bad omens and harbingers of evil...
It's kind of sweet that he has the crow keep its distance away from YXW.
Ooooh... he writes with his left hand eh? Oh... no. he was just disguising his handwriting. Fair... But... that lefthanded calligraphy is ridiculously good. Like does he practice on the reg for just in case moments like this??
Hmmm she's grabbing his right hand. Is that going to be a problem for him?
Now kith.
Pang Ziyi. Sir, you are perfectly useless, and I love you for it. His biggest contribution thus far was saving YXW from a crow. What a king. Lmao he's even acknowledging that his junior is more competent than him. All of this is excellent.
Lmao hilarious. Xiao Lin ends up actually getting the secret note from TTJ. (Side note, Xiao Lin's hair and accessories are so pretty <3)
Hm. Was his hair piece always this elaborate and fancy? I mean he looks very good. But... he's gone from a single hairpin to this fancy hair crown.
What. He caught her and they fell together. Why are they so far apart now and facing opposite directions. Did they horizontally ballerina twirl away from each other as they fell?
Ooooh his telepathy with creature comes from his tribe/mama... not from the evil bone.
I really like this song.
Huh... i really had a lot of reactions and thoughts today... Hope that kitty is ok!

Australia concerned about Chinese navy’s firing drills
Australia warned airlines flying between Australian airports and New Zealand on Friday of a possible Chinese warship firing exercise in the Tasman Sea, diverting several flights and raising questions about whether China had been given sufficient warning of the danger.
Regulator Airservices Australia warned commercial pilots of potential dangers in the airspace between the countries as three Chinese warships conduct exercises off Australia’s east coast, officials said.
However, three flights from Sydney to the New Zealand cities of Christchurch and Queenstown were in the air before they were first warned of a firing exercise by a Chinese warship on their way, media reports said.
The warships – the frigate Hengyang, cruiser Zunyi and resupply ship Weishanghu – exercise freedom of navigation in international waters off Australia’s east coast, annoying Beijing when a similar exercise is conducted by the Australian military in the contested South China Sea.
China has warned that the ships could potentially open fire during the exercise, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said.
At a regular briefing by the Chinese Foreign Ministry on Friday, spokesman Guo Jiakun said China’s military had organised its fleet to conduct the exercise on the high seas. The exercise was conducted in a safe, standard and professional manner in accordance with relevant international law and practice, Guo said.
Australian defence officials were unsure whether the actual firing occurred. The danger has now passed, Albanese said. The prime minister added that there was no immediate danger to any Australian or New Zealand assets, citing information from his defence ministry.
New Zealand says there was no immediate danger
New Zealand Defence Minister Judith Collins agreed in a statement that there was no immediate danger to her country. She said New Zealand was aware of possible firing activity but there was no confirmation that any shooting had taken place. She also added that New Zealand was working closely with Australia to gather information about Friday’s events.
New Zealand’s aviation regulator has not issued any warnings. The aviation authority said it was aware of Australia’s advice, according to the statement. The authority did not explain its decision.
Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong said she would discuss the air traffic disruption when she meets Chinese counterpart Wang Yi at the G20 ministerial meeting in South Africa.
“We will discuss it with the Chinese, and we have already done so at an official level, in relation to the notification that has been provided and the transparency that has been provided in relation to these exercises, particularly firing exercises,” Wong told the Johannesburg-based Australian Broadcasting Corp.
Flight monitoring websites showed several flights avoided the area between Australia and New Zealand.
Air New Zealand, the country’s national carrier, said in a statement that it had modified flight routes as necessary to avoid the area without affecting our operations.
Virgin Australia said it followed instructions from Airservices Australia but did not say whether its New Zealand services had been diverted. Pilots on Virgin, Qantas and Emirates flights from Sydney to New Zealand changed course after a warship broadcast a warning of an imminent firing exercise, Nine Network television reported.
Chinese vessel under surveillance
Qantas and Emirates did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Australian and New Zealand warships and P-8 Poseidon surveillance aircraft have been watching Chinese warships for days.
Chinese warships rarely come this far south as part of a deployment seen as a demonstration of the growing size and capabilities of the Chinese navy. Captain Steve Cornell, vice-president of the Australian and International Pilots Association, which represents Qantas pilots, was critical of China’s choice of location for the exercise.
“While it is unusual to see Chinese warships in this part of the world, pilots often have to face obstacles to navigate safely, whether it is military exercises such as this one or other events such as missile launches, space debris or volcanic eruptions,” Cornell said.
Still, it’s a huge area of ocean, and one would think they could have parked somewhere less inconvenient while demonstrating their capabilities, he added.
Chinese exercise was legal and took place in international waters outside Australia’s exclusive economic zone, Albanese said.
