In light of recent events (read: TRK bonus chapter!) I don't think I'm gonna shut up about this scene
Because we have Andrew, who hates being weak in front of other people
and we have Kevin, who didn't have to ask what was going on
and we have Nicky who held Andrew up when Neil expected him to fall
(Andrew is afraid of heights - and presumably falling)

in honor of the holidays here's some foxes and co going home for the holidays (set sometime in the future)
Somewhere in Wisconsin:
Matt Boyd just won his last game before their winter break.
Dan and Matt make their rounds to say goodbye to everyone as they disperse for the break.
They head out and grab a taxi, making a quick stop by their house to grab their luggage.
They’re headed home for the holidays.
Back to where their families were collecting for the holidays.
Back to South Carolina.
They were unbelievably excited to see everyone.
They had a secret that they were finally telling the foxes when they got them all together.
Dan cradled her growing belly
Somewhere in Colorado:
Renee compiled a list of care advice for her neighbor who is petsitting for her while she’s in South Carolina.
It’s a hefty list and Renee is once again grateful for her kind, elderly neighbor who had volunteered herself immediately after hearing Renee was going to be traveling.
She made her rounds saying goodbye to all her pets before grabbing her suitcase and keys and heading to the door.
She sent a text to Allison to let her know she was about to hit the road.
Text sent she said one last goodbye at the door before locking up behind her.
South Carolina, here we come.
Somewhere in New York:
Allison carefully packed her clothes into her bag.
Had she possibly packed too much for her two-week trip? Probably, but she hasn’t seen anyone in a while, and she likes to look good.
Allison checked her phone for the time before grabbing her suitcases and putting them by the door.
She did one last walk-through to make sure she didn’t forget anything before turning all her lights off and grabbing her luggage.
She closed the door and locked it before making her way out of her apartment.
She sent a text to Renee to let her know she was leaving and got in her car.
Somewhere in Germany:
“Nicky, Liebling, if you don’t get your ass down here we’re going to miss our flight!”
Nicky swears as he collects his bags in a hurry, his feet pounding down the stairs of his and Erik’s apartment.
Germany had done Nicky a lot of good but he was undeniably excited to head back to the States.
Back to his family.
“I’m ready! I swear!”
Erik laughed and herded him out the door.
They made it through the security check with 15 minutes to get to their boarding area.
They laughed as they ran through the airport, their luggage flipping and bumping into the back of their legs.
They were the last people on the plane, but they made it.
Nicky was going home.
Somewhere in California:
Kevin lugs both suitcases into the trunk of his car before he helps Amalia into the back seat and gets her buckled into her car seat.
They were driving all the way to South Carolina because Amalia had recently become deathly afraid of planes.
Settling in for the two-day drive, they'd barely made it 30 minutes into the trip before Amalia determined it had been a long time and it was time for snacks.
With a deep breath and a silent prayer to all things holy, Kevin pulled into a gas station to get snacks and have a bathroom break.
He knew the drive would be rough but 'Grandpa Coach' and 'Gran Abby', as Amalia had taken to calling her grandparents (maybe Kevin should have stopped calling them by name), would be more than willing to take Amalia when they got home.
Amalia spent the rest of the 36 hour drive rotating between excitably talking about seeing her aunts and uncles, singing the entire Frozen soundtrack at the top of her little 4 year old lungs, and sleeping.
Somewhere between Kansas and South Carolina:
"If you touch the stereo one more time, Josten, you're losing your hand."
Hands held over the console.
Hand kisses.
Smoke breaks.
Lots of snack breaks.
Neil gets fruit cups and Andrew gets candy.
Their cats joined them for the trip.
Sir sits in Neil's lap the entire ride but King gets the zoomies every 30 miles.
Andrew has to repeatedly remove him from his feet so he stops getting close to the pedals.
They call Bee halfway through the drive to make sure she’ll be there when they get there. She and Andrew chat while Neil takes a bathroom break.
When Neil comes back Andrew’s frame has relaxed a bit further.
They were both excited to see everyone but that didn’t take away the anxiety of having that big of a group together again.
But the foxes were family and they couldn’t wait to see their family.
Somewhere in North Carolina:
"Okay, and you packing the girls' blankets?"
Katelyn and Aaron may resemble headless chickens trying to get their 13 month old twins together and ready.
Katelyn has been tasked with the girls' things and Aaron has been tasked with actually getting the girls in the car.
One of the twins is passed out in their car seat and the other is sobbing and throwing a fit.
Aaron is trying to calm her down and Katelyn is driving.
It took about an hour to get her to stop crying and when she did Aaron took a deep breath and fell back in his seat.
He rested his head back and closed his eyes, letting the quiet sounds of the road soothe him.
That calmness lasts for a good minute before Katelyn lets out a loud, FUCK!
"I forgot our suitcase!"
Somewhere in South Carolina:
Abby fluffs the decorative pillow for the hundredth time in the past ten minutes.
She’s already vacuumed and swept every room in their house. She’s gotten all the spare bedrooms ready and taken out all of the blowup mattresses. Most of the kids were staying with them with the exception of those that had kids.
They hadn’t all been together in so long and it felt imperative that the house looked good for everyone.
Wymack came up behind her and gently took the pillow from her hands before setting it back on the couch.
“The place looks amazing, Abby.”
Abby turned around and shot him a doubtful look.
Wymack laughed roughly and leaned forward to place a careful kiss to her forehead.
“They’re just going to be happy to be here. I don’t think they’d care if it looked like a pigsty in here. Everything is okay, and you know why?”
Abby leaned her weight against Wymack’s chest. “Why?”
Wymack pulled back slightly so he could send her a fond smile.
“Our kids are coming home."

For his birthday, the twins decide to give Nicky a full family day just the three of them (maybe, just maybe, it was Bee's idea).
Nicky is so overjoyed at first that he doesn't know what to do. He wants to go somewhere fun but doesn't want the boys to hate him later or having to leave because Andrew threatened to stab someone. He definitely doesn't want to tempt Aaron either, and also they go clubbing every week.
He doesn't wanna choose somewhere far because they would spent lots of hours on the car in silence. But staying on campus seems boring.
Aaron and Andrew told him with a week to spare because they knew he would have trouble picking. But the days were getting closer and closer and Nicky hadn't choose.
Until he did.
"I wanna go to the park." He announced, a happy smile on his face and a full backpack of snacks and drinks over his right shoulder.
Andrew arched a brow in silence.
"And do what?" Aaron asked trying (and failing) not to sound so annoyed. He had to spect something like this from his cousin, it was his fault not to.
Nicky shrugged. "Spend the day together."
The twins looked at eachother as if decing wich one will get to roll his eyes at that statement.
"You promised." Nicky reminded them.
So that's what they did. They spent a full sunny and warm day in a nearby park, had a "picnic" of sweets and alcohol and played card games.
Nicky and Aaron competed about wich one would get higher on the swings when the amount of children on the games decreased. Andrew watching them from a bouncing horse. And then the three of them took a picture to send to Erik.
They looked happy. They looked like a family.

it’s late and i’m tired so this might not make total sense but stick with me. there’s the scene in trk where all the foxes are having dinner at Halloween, and bee texts andrew which then sparks a conversation about her (and how neil doesn’t like her). nicky says how he was worried about bee to start because andrew’s been through eight doctors. andrew specifically replies, even as he’s busy texting, and says thirteen! and nicky follows up by saying ‘some insane number’.
the way i read it, both the physical book and the audio even more, is nicky brushing off the interruption to continue his story. and with this interpretation, i think this really captures exactly how misguided nicky is (and aaron too by extension) in his understanding of andrew. like andrew specifically gives him an answer and nicky hears it but doesn’t register it, or adjust his story. no wonder he’s so surprised to learn things later; he hasn’t really been listening to andrew anyway, even when andrew is actually giving information. (i did what i said i would do and fuck you for expecting anything else)
and sure this is such a small moment, but on my millionth reread of this series, it’s these little things that make me wonder

I think Dan decides the next season (post-canon) that the Foxes need a pregame/practice playlist. It’s probably one of the best and worst decisions she’s ever made. On one hand it’s gets the Foxes extremely excited and gets them all hyped up. But on the other hand, they get so distracted when music they like is playing that practice can quickly become a mess.
Allison adds ‘Man! I feel like a Women!’ By Shania Twain because she loves that song and she also thinks there’s a chance the rest of them will hate it and she won’t pass that opportunity up.
But no no, the Foxes absolutely love it. It’s comes on for the first time during a summer practice and Nicky and Matt actually scream. Like they’re so excited they immediately stop what they’re doing the moment they hear those opening notes.
Like I can just imagine them using their racquets as microphones and passionately singing to each other. Nicky’s pulling Renee in to dance with him. Matt and Dan are basically having a lip sync battle. Allisons pulling Kevin and Neil into the mix and they both reluctantly join in. Kevins doing an awkward ‘too tall to properly dance’ dance with zero rhythm. And Neil’s just smiling fondly watching them all and mumbling the lyrics he knows.
And Aaron like naturally drifts over to Andrew’s goal out of shock and away from the dance party happening in the middle of the court. When he gets there Andrew just turns to him and deadpans
“Yaknow Aaron, the best thing about being a woman is the prerogative to have a little fun”
Right in time with the music. And it catches Aaron so off guard he genuinely laughs and the corner of Andrew’s mouth quirks up a bit. They spend the rest of the song watching the rest of the Foxes from Andrew’s goal (and flip them off in sync when they try to get them into the middle)
The freshman are so confused why practice has just come to a screeching halt all of a sudden. They just stand on the sidelines, basically gawking at the OG Foxes in the middle, way too scared to join in or say something. The moment the songs over they all snap back into practice mode so quickly that it gives the freshman whiplash. Kevin fucking Day was just dancing to Shania Twain and now he’s yelling at them for standing around and doing nothing.
Anytime the song comes on after that, the Foxes stop whatever they’re doing and have to sing/dance to it. It does not matter what’s happening, it’s like there’s a silent agreement among them all to just go along with it. They’re like sleeper agents and the opening riff of Man! I feel like a Woman! Is their trigger.
Wymack definitely uses this to his advantage. If the team is arguing or having a rough practice or they’re nervous for a game he plays it. And he watches fondly as they all stop arguing or stressing and the biggest, brightest smiles spread across most of their faces (Dan, Matt, Nicky, Renee, Allison) or they just sigh in surrender and start bobbing their heads (Kevin, Aaron, Neil). Even Andrew likes it, he just stays in his goal or off to the side, eyebrows raised in amusement and hums along with the song.

Every time I think about Nicky from AFTG I wanna cry a little.
This kid, who knows he’s gay but has been sent to conversion therapy for so many years. Who’s so happy and excited but grew up in a house full of cold furniture and colder people.
Who applied to a study abroad program as a last ditch effort to get away, to get out, only to meet the Klose family who is so excited and happy for him, who love him and support him, who have an openly gay son that they love unapologetically.
Nicky, who found a new family to love him and support him. Nicky, who got away from all the horror in the states. Nicky, who finally could accept who he was and love himself.
And he immediately dropped all of it to save Andrew and Aaron from his father. He couldn’t save his younger self, but he could save his cousins.
His cousins, one who’s apathetic and suicidal and violent, and the other who spits anger and hatred at him the same way his father did all those years. Nicky leaves Germany, his home and family, to save Andrew and Aaron.
Nicky, who works two jobs and begs his boyfriend to help him buy a house in America, where he has no intention of staying.
Nicky, who uses his happiness and bubbly personality as a shield from the vitriol his cousin spits at him, so reminiscent of his father.
Nicky, who gets cornered by 3 men after work, terrified in the alleyway, till Andrew beats the shit out of them. He watches, horror and relief in his throat, as Andrew just keeps going, until the police are there and the men aren’t getting up and Andrew’s in handcuffs.
Nicky, who watches as the only family that seems to care about him gets put on medication that sends him higher than a kite, forces him to become someone else.
Nicky, who never gives up hope that his parents will love him again, that they’ll welcome him back again.
Nicky, whose hopes for forgiveness from his parents irreparably hurt his cousin, the only one in America that really cares about him.

you ever think about how neil came to the foxhole court every inch a lie but his friends made him into someone real? how he began trusting them with little parts of himself gradually, how he accepted that staying with them would mean death, and stayed anyway. about how he was their family, they were his. they were worth every every cut and bruise and scream. i will never move on from how neil found himself in the middle of these misfits, found trust and friendship and love and protection, found the wish to live instead of just survive, found the wish to stay and fight and protect instead of run away, because he finally found something worth fighting and staying and risking his life for.

Aaron letting himself collapse on the floor after an intense footwork practice session where Kevin breathed down everyone’s necks so they would be perfect for finals.
His lungs are on fire, his legs have the consistency of jelly left in the sun for too long, and he is exhausted from all the assignments and tests he has had to work on and study for. As soon as Wymack whistles the end of practice, he tosses his helmet away, falls to his knees first, then willingly lets gravity pull him down until he’s sprawling on his back. He doesn’t care one bit. He’s just tired. He hears footsteps coming his way.
Matt appears from above him, looming high, and looking just as rough as he is. “You good buddy?” he asks. They’ve gotten closer ever since Aaron switched dorms with Neil. Aaron nods silently.
Matt stretches his hand outfor Aaron to take but he shakes his head. “The floor is great right now,” Aaron wheezes.
Matt snorts. Then he does something Aaron didn’t see coming. He crouches and lets himself lay down next to him. “Huh,” Matt says after a beat. “The floor is great right now indeed.”
Aaron stares at him, wondering what’s going on.
Before he can figure it out, Nicky sprawls on Matt’s other side. “Goddammit, I’m fucking parched,” his cousin says through ragged breaths. “Are we having a floor party? Why wasn’t I invited?”
“You just invited yourself,” Aaron answers. There is no heat in his voice.
“Oh Maaatt,” Dan’s voice comes from somewhere on Aaron’s left. She flops down on top of her boyfriend. “I can’t stand up anymore. Day is gonna be the end of me.”
“He’s gonna be the end of us,” Nicky cries dramatically.
“You should thank him. Erik is gonna love those thick thighs,” Matt smiles.
“Got anything you want to admit to the general public, Boyd?” Nicky fires back, playful grin on his lips.
“Keep your flirting away from here,” Aaron groans.
And then the bane of his existence appears in his field of vision, Andrew silent by his side. “You flirt with Katelyn all day long, that’s rich of you to say.”
“Fuck off, Josten.”
“Can’t face the truth?”
“I wasn’t talking to you.” Aaron cannot add anything else as a full water bottle lands on his chest.
“Drink,” Andrew commands quietly Aaron grumbles. He opens the bottle. But he freezes. Because Andrew sits down next to him and tugs Neil down on the floor with him. The redhead willingly lets him and soon enough, half the team is on the floor surrounding Aaron.
Renee, who until then had been helping Allison clean up the court, calls Kevin to join them. It takes a lot of convincing before he joins them too, but eventually all the Foxes are there in a circle. Aaron ignores the feeling in his chest. He ignores the fact that despite thinking he would always be alone, he now has a family, no matter how dysfunctional. He won’t admit it out loud—not yet at least—but he is grateful for every single one of them.
Even Neil, no matter how hard he denies it.
