Psyche x Medea, 18+ fic

A short scene set after the ball in chapter 147. Mostly written out of spite about a plot development in recent fast pass chapters

Psyche used to only love beautiful things. Roses in full bloom. Stars in a clear sky. Baby deer taking their first shaky steps on delicate spindle legs. But lately, she has found herself loving the dark. Loving spiders, even as they wind deadly threads around helpless and struggling flies. Loving serpents as they open their jaws to swallow mice. Loving the abbysal depths of the sea, where no light ever reaches.

The night Eros announces the end of their engagement, Psyche and Medea swap bodies. Not for long, just for a few brief hours between the end of the party and the first glimmer of dawn. Lying in Medea's cold bed, in her colder room, Psyche feels Medea's body thrumming with endorphins, a heady cocktail of joy that speeds her heart to a dancing rhythm and thrills the nerves in her arms and legs. This is how Medea felt, Psyche knows, when she heard about the annulment. They cannot talk, say the countless things that must be on their minds. So they exchange something more base, pure chemical feeling. As Psyche lies here, her soul bound to Medea's limbs, Medea is lying far away in Psyche's bed, her senses saturated Psyche's endocrine system. Her brain awash with delight and relief and freedom.

"You should take better care of yourself, my darling," Psyche whispers aloud, and hears the words in Medea's rich timbre. She has a lovely alto voice. She would make an incredible church soloist, in another world. That's a funny thought, and so Psyche laughs Medea's thrilling laugh. Then she draws together her power, and heals the little stresses and tensions that linger in Medea's body. She can't fix everything - certainly not Medea's chronic lack of sleep - but she does what she can.

As the tension drains from Medea's body, Psyche catches a lingering trace of another feeling, the dregs of something unfulfilled. Desire, hot and heavy, coils in Medea's abdomen. It's such a hungry feeling, even tamed. It would knock Psyche to her knees if she wasn't already lying down. And this is just the afterimage, not the full potency that Medea must have felt some hours ago. But when, where, why? Who was at the party to inspire this lust? Not Helio, surely, since as far as Psyche knows, he didn't attend. And anyway, thinking of him seems to immediately diminish this feeling, wherever it came from. Psyche doubtingly thinks the name Eros, but the flash of his face in her memory is like a bucket of cold water. Relieved, Psyche pushes the thought of him away. Was it victory then? Maybe the triumph of the broken engagement made Medea want another triumph. As she thinks that, Psyche gets a flash, a memory from this body of her own face, laughing. She seems so... bright, like her whole being is filled with sunlight. And like the sun shining through a magnifying glass, that dazzling smile beams into Medea's body and bursts into flames of desire. It rushes through Psyche's soul in a torrent, want want want want. She can suddenly barely breathe for yearning.

Before she knows what she's doing, Medea's hands are sliding underneath her nightgown, stroking, squeezing, touching. It's nothing like what Psyche feels in her own body. Her own desire is like the wind, flowing through her, lifting her up. It's a loose and light and liberating feeling. Medea's desire wraps like tentacles, chokes like smoke, burns like fire. It's greedy and grasping and all consuming. It eats Psyche, pinning her soul to these limbs as they quake, shuddering and tensing as they fight towards the great release of the little death. She couldn't stop this if she wanted to.

And she doesn't want to. Here in Medea's body Psyche can let herself feel so much. She can recognise her own greedy and grasping desires, the way she wants Medea to look at her, only her, forever and ever and ever. She wants to drown in those dark eyes from dusk to dawn, and wants her hair to be the beam of sunlight that wakes Medea from slumber. She wants them to live openly together. She wants to demand that Medea give up everything else she loves so they can run away to another continent and spend quiet decades in each other's arms.

In the light of day, with her own tongue, she will bind these selfish whims to silence. Medea need never know. But here in the dark in the devil's lair, she lets herself be the spider, the serpent, the abyss.

Medea's body reaches climax, and Psyche comes apart with it, and when she comes back together she feels changed in a way that no touch from Eros could ever have done.

She lies back on the pillow, closing her eyes. Half asleep, she wonders what Medea felt tonight. If anyone could have unravelled the threads of yearning that Psyche's nerves are strung with, it's Medea. Maybe she spooled that yarn through Psyche's labyrinth of restraint and found treasure at the heart. Maybe not. But, Psyche thinks, one last dreamlike thought before she falls asleep, even if she didn't find passion, she would have found love. Rose sweet, star bright, a gentle balm as healing as the power of God. Medea sleeps tonight cradled in the muscles, veins and bones of one who adores every part of her.

Psyche wakes back in her own body. She feels deeply rested, though she doesn't know if that feeling comes from soul, or body, or both. As she gets up, she spies a note on her bedside table, written in her own hand. It was not there last night.

"It seems I have a big test coming up. If I am to prove the equal of myself, I must study very hard indeed. For I will not always be my own examiner."

If they would really make het ships endgame for Your Throne, I hope it would be Helios x Psyche. But then again it's so Highly Unlikely 😂 truly I do love this manhwa, but with the way they kept pushing the (het) ships got me hhhnnghh because they just!! Taste so Bland to me??? I think Your Throne should've been yuri. All the het ships made me feel NOTHING

The only het ship dynamics I find Flavorful is Heli x Psyche... and the Core was their love for Medea, which made me think of rivalship a bit...

Heras going to try giving Timo tasks like Psyche, but the difference is that Hypnos will just put any beasts to sleep. Anything sleep cannot do will be dealt with via farming knowledge.

Get a thing from a dragon hoard? Asleep. Gather golden wool without Helios noticing? All the sheep are asleep and she was a shepherdess, she can sheer a sheep. Capture a large and dangerous serpent that’s been driving people from her temple? Sleep and then a shovel.

I feel like it’d culminate in the standard ‘go retrieve X from the underworld and bring it to me’, like a pomegranate from Persephone’s garden. Which just means a whole Thing about going in and out, but Persephone-- who by this point has been informed via overhearing Hypnos panicking at Zagreus about his beloved mortal trying to navigate shades--just. “Honestly.” And takes one of the bottles of ambrosia Zag has around up to the Temple of Styx and hands it to Timo when the poor girl finally treks up there. Like, she deffo still brings the pom, but she’s moved past being involved in schemes. That and she can get some fresh air while chatting with this intrepid mortal that thinks to make the god of sleep settle down.

Hera just kind of goes ‘fair play’ at that point, i think. if only because this means she doesn’t have to involve Zeus, which is always a plus. And really, Timo’s mother’s piety more than covers what’s left--which is technically a terribly mundane wedding.

I like to think Persephone is kind of sounding it out to Timo a bit during that convo tho, like what its like to live deep underground for centuries. Which, because Timo isn’t stupid, is taken into consideration. But since it’s weighed against ‘i love hypnos’, no real opinion change happens. Hypnos is a bit upset when he finds out she physically was a quick boat ride with his brother away from him, though. Like he could have gone up there! Actually seen her face! But nooo. Zag consoles him with the reminder that, since it was the last trial, the first time he’ll see her will be the wedding feast with her family. Then he can look at her all he likes. He still pouts

But ofcourse the girl who is being all cute and extroverted is bad and an immediate threat to her!!! On the ships in Your Throne though, let’s be real :

Everyone is in love with Medea, we know that, BUT

- Eros is an asshole and is gonna die

- Helio’s love for Medea is toxic. Here, I said it. His feelings themselves aren’t really a problem, but the way he reacts to them is absolutely toxic, both for him as a person and his relationship with Medea. He never questions her, even on personal matters like the bite mark on her wrist, he’d do absolutely anything for her, once again no questions asked, he’s devoting herself fully to her and nothing else, he doesn’t even seem to have any thought in his head beside “I want to be useful to Lady Medea”, which means he basically isn’t even his own person and only exists through her... It’s no wonder Medea isn’t in love with him : she’s said so already, even thinking this might make her similar to Eros because she pretends not to know what kind of love Helio has for her just to keep the status quo and not lose one of her closest friends and most useful and loyal allies. Medea is a strong and determined person who is constantly trying to better herself and achieve a higher position because she wants to be recognised for her feats and talents, to leave a trace in history ; I cannot fathom how such a character could fall in love with a shadow, a puppet at best who barely has a will and personality of his own and who doesn’t even believe himself to deserve to stand at her side.

- Perion... isn’t actually in love with Medea. He’s curious, he’s watching her closely, but he’s always been very clear about his feelings : he is disgusted by the sins Medea has already committed and only works with her because he wants to see the changes she will bring to the Empire.

- Bertie is adorable, kind, caring, and a lot smarter and more observant than anyone else in the cast, aside from Medea, Dekis, Eros and Helio. I wouldn’t be surprised if, when Medea rises to power, Bertie became one of her closest allies. Plus, Medea has already gone berserk over Bertie getting injured for her sake. I think a relationship between them would be adorable, but ultimately very unlikely because of their differences in standing, life experiences, goals, etc.

- Psyche, finally, is one of the very few people who considers herself an equal to Medea (and rightly so !) and the only one among those few who is both in love with her (contrary to Perion) and whom Medea loves as well (contrary to Eros). Their lives have been very different, yet a lot of parallels can be drawn, and their ability to switch bodies has granted them a glimpse of the other’s life no one else could ever get, allowing them to understand each other very well despite only knowing each other for a couple of years and being close friends for just a few months. She has questioned Medea many times over her intentions, actions and morals, and in the recent chapters Medea has started to change because, as she told Psyche before, Psyche is the kind of person “who makes people want to be like her”, meaning that Medea’s change in behaviour and new tendency to put her plans into jeopardy to protect someone, even if it doesn’t benefit her, is something she likes about Psyche and wants to reproduce, even if she doesn’t fully understand it yet. Psyche herself has changed a lot since switching bodies with Medea, not only learning to read between the lines in the nobles’ conversations but also to understand someone’s intentions and plans and finding ways to counter them, thus becoming more like Medea herself. In other words, those two keep challenging each other and try to become better versions of themselves by emulating the other’s qualities, which is exactly what I believe is missing from Medea’s relationship with Helio.

I’ve seen a few comparisons between Your Throne and Beware the Villainess regarding the wlw ships, but there is a key difference : the final ship in Beware the Villainess, Melissa and Nine, has always been more balanced than the “main hetero relationship” in Your Throne, between Medea and Helio, because while Nine always admired Melissa, he was never as dependent on her as Helio is, meaning their relationship was a lot more healthy from the start and, as it developped, Nine did his best to become someone who could be an equal to Melissa in order to support her to the best of his abilities, while Helio wants to be strong enough to protect her, but hasn’t had any character development going beyond that so far (while Medea and Psyche have had a lot of character development themselves, making me think Helio isn’t gonna get significant development).

With all of this information, I have a couple of expectations for the end of the series in the romance department :

- since Psyche has been trapped by her love for Eros for a good part of the series so far and has never had a chance to be herself, I expect her to pull a Yuri from Beware the Villainess and focus on developing into her own person at the end of the series, when she has the space and freedom to do so. Considering the latest free chapters, I imagine her using her blessing to help at a hospital, maybe running an orphanage, something to make people happy as it is what makes her happiest, from what we’ve seen.

- Helio, if he gets any semblance of character development, and I expect him to, but not a lot, will get just enough to understand he’s been relying too much on Medea and will distance himself from her once the conflict is over. He’ll probably go on a journey, maybe a pilgrimage, to find himself and repent for what he did during the war.

- Medea will remain single at the end of the series. Maybe it will be hinted that she will marry a few years down the line, but not right away. She is healing from trauma, just like Helio and Psyche are, so she will need to find herself and grow into the person she wants to be before she can be in any healthy romantic relationship, regardless of the feelings of love she might hold for one of the aforementioned characters.

If a ship is hinted at for Medea, a few years down the line, I don’t expect her partner to be Psyche, but thematically speaking and character-wise, it would be the ship that would make the most sense and would feel most appropriate considering the characters’ standing at this point in the story. If Helio went through a whole arc of character development, things might be different, but I don’t think he will by the end of the series. Also, Othilei’s queen has made quite a few references to being attracted to Medea, and Medea has acknowledged them, unlike what we could see in some similar stories like Beware the Villainess, meaning it is canonly considered a possibility for two women to be attracted to each other and one half of the ship at least is aware of that. Adding the fact that Dion has also shown that love between two men exists and is acknowledged in this world (Dekis didn’t even say he wasn’t interested in men, only that he was married, and I choose to consider that means he is bi or pan. Medea is also bi because you can’t tell me that someone who wears gowns and suits so well isn’t bi) and it isn’t so unlikely anymore to see Medea and Psyche admit to being in love with each other, even if nothing comes of it right away. But, like I said, I don’t expect that to happen.
