A week later after our large planting session, with the whole garden in and planted now, and this is the result! Everything that was newly seeded has come up, even the potatoes! Only a few photos today from our work today at @crossinghedgerowssanctuary. Check out their page for more! We started up by splitting up into groups. Kiba and Blue went with @curiousjean and newcomer Holly to work on the garden and other things while I tackled the cook's foundation again. We are trying to keep the concrete foundation clear so the straw and manure can properly compost together in the chickens' yard. While Kiba and Holly continued to work on weeding the garden, @curiousjean, Blue, and I planted lettuce seeds in a planter. Her little hands were perfect for the work -while we could hold her attention! After a small break, all of us, including @brennahcavanaugh, toured the site together. Finally! The strawberries trellis pyramids are done! Dad did most of the final installation work himself. Kiba and I ran Items back and forth, and Kiba mulched around the cucumbers. All three of us helped install the strawberries, and Papa put the screwed in spacers that hold the shape of the gutters in place from side to side, screwing them right into the trellis. Hail Jörð! Lots of garden work today! Kiba and Sylverleaf moved mulch, Papa made rows, and we planted a lot, especially the potatoes, cauliflower, and some volunteer cherry tomatoes. We had a great day @crossinghedgerowssanctuary with @curiousjean and @brennahcavanaugh. We started off our day in the hoophouse where we finished up fencing the interior of the hoophouse. Then, we cleaned up the yard and composted deadfall. Afterwards, we headed into the forest where Little Miss crossed the bridge on her own! I wish I had been there to see it; I was grabbing things from the car and played catchup with the three of them. Meanwhile @curiousjean and @brennahcavanaugh were staking out trails as they went along. @brennahcavanaugh found a wild turkey feather while we were out in the woods and she gifted it to Charlotte. We made our way out of the forest and onto our property. The waters have receded lately, and the oasis in the middle of our property had thousands of tadpoles. This last Thursday, 10/8/2020, my wife Sylverleaf, our daughter, @stormbreakahh all worked on harvesting sunchokes, a tuber you can cook and eat much like potatoes. I joined them after pulling a couple of blackthorn trees. Their berries are poisonous to humans and animals, and they have big taproot systems. Hard to remove. We started the day at @crossinghedgerowssanctuary checking out the Yew Tree and seeing the ivy growth around the English garden is great. We then split off after @curiousjean, @brennahcavanaugh, @stormbreakahh and I got the bed warmer out of the ground and moved. A busy day today at Crossing Hedgerows Sanctuary and Farm. We kept good social distance while doing our work today. We started off repotting several trees. Why did we pot trees to start with? Because the work on both the Cavanaughs and our land has started! The earthmover is coming through to start the grid drainage system that will balance water on the land, not too much and not dried out. So, we spent a day rescuing trees and at first they went into small pots. Jean found some bigger ones they can grow into, and so, the repotting began. Then, as we walked the gentleman working on our properties let us know that there were more trees to save, so we went and brought them over. Once the work on the land is done, we'll be replanting. The trees we saved are oaks, junipers, and maples. We ended the day with Jean, Brennah, Caitlin, and Sylverleaf working on cedar bundles that from freshly fallen cedar pieces while Kiba and I mulched the pathways in the annuals garden. Hail Jörð! Update on our wonderful garden! I've tasted our cucumbers for the first time and I am so happy! Nothing so satisfying or tasty as eating food you planted and that came from your family garden. Everything is coming along well except the bush beans, which, while there are some good plants coming up, aren't as many as we'd hoped. We're going to have to try again with the rhubarb next year, as none of the roots have taken. Our first socially distanced workday at Crossing Hedgerows Sanctuary and Farm. My job today was to clear out a large section, about the back right quarter of the hoophouse while my son, Kiba, worked with @curiousjean on cleaningout the main chicken coop, and @stormbreakahh weeded the annual garden.
