Fairy-type trainer extraordinaire, Tsubaki, enters the scene! It didn’t take long to decide on a type for Tsubaki to main tbh (like Hiiragi is dragon, hands down, and Ume grass), and I’m only a little disappointed that Lopunny’s the outlier here, because as much as I love Hatterene and think it suits Tsubaki, it wasn’t going to beat out Lopunny. This bunny is out there kicking the crap out of opponents and Tsubaki couldn’t be prouder.

Slightly adjacent topic, but I use he/him for Tsubaki because those are his canon pronouns that he uses himself. However! Trans!Tsubaki, or any non-cis iteration thereof, is also cool, so I absolutely had to give him the Trans Icon Sylveon. Happily, Hatterene’s color scheme is similar, so they’re both excellent additions to his team. As for Tinkaton… I didn’t know this pokemon existed until I pulled up a list of fairy types and saw it towards the bottom. I fell in love, instantly, and I firmly believe Tsubaki did as well. I love tiny characters with huge-ass hammers/axes/various melee weapons (Kikoru from Kn8 my beloved), my fate was sealed the moment I saw this. Aromatisse goes along with Tsubaki’s love of pretty things, in the form of being a walking perfume dispenser (and an excellent way for Tsubaki to run off assholes without having to lift a finger). In my heart Aromatisse is free of its pokeball most of the time and spends an ungodly amount of hours coming up with new scents for Tsubaki’s approval, good and bad. Tsubaki’s favorite is also coincidentally the one Umemiya liked enough to comment on it, so Aromatisse makes sure to spritz Tsubaki whenever it knows its trainer is going to meet up with Ume.

Applin is, of course, a gift from Umemiya, which he gave to Tsubaki the day he decided to take a break from his champion duties. Tsubaki had the same idea, so they’re matchy-matchy (and in love shhhhhh).

Fun fact! Tsubaki was originally a contest participant and holds three Regional Contest Champion Titles. Someone more fashion-conscious than me can imagine all the glorious costumes he wore on his contest runs. He still keeps an eye on the scene despite not having much time to participate these days and he’s particularly keen on up-and-comer Suo!

Still working up to book reviews, but an update on Isabel Cooper's The Stormbringer: a solid action fantasy and a delightful romance that didn't escalate all the way into a threesome, but is still extremely, extremely resonant not only to my poly heart but also to my dating-and-finding-love-after-bereavement heart. (For that matter, there is explicit if quiet open relationship rep!) Personally I'd have written it as a threesome and I even see the ingredients for writing that fanfic. But I also see Cooper's reasoning for not going there, and the overall theme of the story, about there being different kinds of love, all overlapping and valuable, is so fucking gorgeous. What an unexpected treat. I hope the core couple (plus their boyfriend/ex/sword) shows up more in the other two books of the trilogy because I want to see how their relationship evolves.

Also the monster design in this series is wonderfully creepy. You might not want to eat while reading some scenes.

This is the second book of Cooper's I've read, and I'm very fond of her style of protagonist, which I want to describe as "has a good head on their shoulders" or maybe "is a grownup." Don't get me wrong, I love a trainwreck protagonist too (I just devoured two Sherrilyn Kenyon romances in a row). But it can be relaxing to read about competent, fair-minded people doing their best and falling in love with each other on the way. They've got senses of proportion and humor, which is always endearing and prevents any goody two-shoes or stick-in-the-mudness. Stormbringer does have a case of "This problem would be solved in five minutes if you all sat down and talked" but it also gives convincing reasons why they aren't able to find those five minutes (there's an impending apocalypse; also the hero has effectively time-traveled a century into his future and is trying to adjust; the heroine has not had 'fall in love with anyone, much less your magic sword's ex-boyfriend' on her radar and is also trying to adjust. They're busy!) so as a reader I was mostly just relieved when they got things figured out, rather than impatient with them not figuring things out sooner.

Also the setting is queernorm, but in a way that didn't come across as cloying or half-baked taunting to me ("gee, Sage, wouldn't it be nice if your neighbors were wizards rather than MAGA?" Thanks, book, never would have occurred to me without your insight) in the way some do. In fact it was very, very sexy to watch a bi hero do his thing with nobody thinking twice of it. Plus the heroine got to flirt with some ladies. There's a nonbinary wizard and I think one of the heroine's fellow monster-hunters is trans, giving a passing line about her using her magic to shape her body--another character I hope to see more of in the next two books!

This turned into a more substantial not-review than I expected! Maybe I'll rewrite it with better sentence structure down the line.

i dont even think they have any canon interactions (correct me if im wrong!!!) but in a smashing two barbies together way i kind of fuck with peter "least grounded in reality human being to ever live" stamatin and stanislav "stakh" "most confrontational human being to ever live" rubin holding hands and/or fucking nastystyle. its hard to articulate what makes them such polar opposites in my mind but its definitely an interesting dynamic that i never would have come up with myself. peter the dreamer and stakh the pragmatist. peter the artist and stakh the ex-mercenary. both of them hate authority. both of them have probably killed someone. stakh is built like the fucking colossus of rhodes, meanwhile a strong wind could knock peter over and shatter him into a million pieces. what a ship of all time

It always seems a bit unbalanced on The Great Food Truck Race when there will be multiple teams who are cooking a wide variety of complex dishes with 10 different components and a bunch of prep work, and then there's that one team who like... exclusively serves plain crepes with some premade nutella on them, or plain waffles with just some whipped cream and cut up strawberries lol...

for me… FOR ME..!!! and for shri’iia specifically the lock in for astarion’s romance is his graveyard scene in act 3.

i think it is too quick for shri’iia to be moving on to another relationship considering her previous one was with her mistress who essentially groomed and isolated her for like … more than hundred years. learning to chase her own desires and not moulding herself to what anyone wants her to be is something so new to her…!!! and something that she’s still learning how to be comfortable with….

and what I like abt romancing astarion with her is that I usually go for the dialogue path in his act 2 confession scene where you can ask him:

- what do YOU want to do?

and he goes like honestly idk what we’re doing but /this/ is nice. it just feels like two people exploring the option to love for the first time and taking things in their own pace rather than jumping straight into the relationship. they’re going at a snails pace… they don’t know what they’re doing but they like this feeling and the vibe and they want to more of it but they’re not ready to commit to anything yet and it’s fine for them …!! and they’re only committing by the end in the graveyard scene where significant time has passed and they’ve learnt a little more about themselves and they’re both more confident about their own desires and also how they want to be loved.

like it is so fitting I think… and sweet… not to mention astarion being a high elf & a vampire and shri’iia being a drow, they have all the time of the world for themselves so I def think they would want to take their time. except if shri’iia turns into a mindflayer or drider by the end then that plan is out the window lol
