Often, Éduin found himself spending his days yearning for his bed. The idea of getting up and moving on with his life with half of his heart missing was too much.

He had found strength when his son died. Even when their first daughter had died. But now, without his wife, he could hardly find any strength at all.

Once he was in bed, however, sleep wouldn't find him. It was all he wanted and yet it eluded him cruelly.

He would toss and turn, hoping that the noise didn't wake his daughter, desperately trying to find sleep. The empty place beside him didn't help. For years he'd had a comforting weight beside him. Even when they fought, there was nowhere else for them to sleep. Now it was gone.

Just him and this uncomfortable hay bed.

Eventually, he'd give up.

He'd sit up and think about everything. About his wife, about the life they'd shared, about the fact that it all was gone now. . . and about how on Earth he was going to raise his daughter alone.

It all was overwhelming. The future seemed bleak. Maybe, once he got some sleep, he would be able to see a light at the end of the tunnel.

I love editing for friends SO much. It’s so wonderful to be able to comb through their stories and learn how each author, each friend, works and thinks and creatively approaches situations. I love being able to talk to the authors, too! I get to share my earnest reactions to scenes, make silly comments in the margins, and text them over dramatic or surprising moments. How cool is that?? I get to explore entire worlds made by people I love, and then I get to talk about the experience of exploring it with them?? WOW!
