I think its a rite of passage to make an au at least once, and ive been thinking super hard about how Sonic raised tails lately. So obviously an age swap au had to happen. I saw someone on reddit a while back say that Toriyama wasn't a very good storyteller because he's more interested in jokes and I haven't stopped thinking about it.

I can't imagine people who think like that practice critical analysis or creative endeavors, least of all creating comics, and I'm going to explain what I mean using one of my favorite panels from the manga:

Toriyama introduces two new villains who were only mentioned off-screen as being much stronger than Raditz. This one panel both introduces these characters and tells you right away:

The smaller of the two is the superior, based on his attire, the fact that he's in the foreground, and he's the one eating

The superior is callous, both because of his dialogue and the fact that he is the only one eating, despite his meal being larger than he is

The superior is monstrous based on what he is eating (my favorite set of details) -- at first glance some kind of insectoid creature, but upon closer inspection:

This is an intelligent, technologically advanced life-form that used both a gun and a ship

2. Neither Saiyan is damaged, telling us even advanced alien weaponry does not harm a Saiyan (but Vegeta's armor is scuffed while Nappa's isn't, implying there was a physical if not futile attempt to stop him)

3. The arm is still bleeding, implying this kill is relatively fresh

4. The gun is next to the body, implying that Vegeta sat down on this person and starting eating them right where they died

5. There is a second body in the background that is significantly smaller despite being very nearby, which may imply that Vegeta is eating the adult but did not spare the child -- and if you're really into parallels,

6. There is smoke in the background, Nappa is sitting on inorganic architecture, and the ship is on it's side, making the sixth most brutal detail that these two beings were fleeing from the saiyan attack on some kind of community, and not only did Vegeta not allow them to escape, he also punished them for trying to by EATING the one in charge.

Like what do you mean Toriyama isn't a good storyteller. This is a Debut Panel. He tells you how scary this new villain is without having to say anything at all.

damn the weeks are going fast.

finally ran out of other writing wips, so heres two chunks of the Conficcare getting the shit beaten outta him fic<3 ft him using his stand to make a guy punch themselves in the face.

How the times change. Just a few years ago, it was swaggering wankers like these that would suffer a good bashing from C- Muros boots. Ribs cracking and skin turning purple under his relentless assaults, no time to fight back when he gets them to the ground and prone so quickly, nothing they can do except curl up and try and protect their heads- a futile move, just drawing his ire and boot towards whatever they tried to cover. 

Those were the days, when he hid behind he- him, behind them, when he was the weedy voice that told them of whispered rebellion, of under the breath insults. 

But now, now he could stand on his own, as his own man, not just a suck up and voice in the ear. Now- now he was able to defend himself. His cool fingers grip eerily cold metal even tighter.

His muscles contract and loosen, the cold metal in his hand arching into the neck of the leader- and more muscles contract, blue energy taking over from electrical- changing it- the satisfying thud of well worn knuckles connecting with cartilage, the confused cry of someone who just punched themselves in the face, and the dripping of blood escaping from damaged nasal tissue.

He's out of practice, giving himself a split second to admire his handiwork, a split second in which pain blooms in his abdomen as the other fist finds its way to his gut, his back further shoved against the wall. He knows he's gonna have killer scrapes all over, and his top will be barely fit for rags.

Stupid mistake on his part, someone swaggering around on these streets isn't gonna be incapacitated by just a broken nose, he of all people should know- and he of all people should know not to let his thoughts run as hes getting beaten on but well he's never been good at taking anyone's advice let alone his own, cant trust that shifty asshole- ow.

where does and doesn't he have fur??

(nothing explicit, just putting it under a readmore bc long)

somehow, despite the Hiruzen x Enma porn drawings* that have been floating around half-formed inside my skull for years now, it is only NOW that i realize: i have no idea what Enma looks like underneath that iconic fit

so analyzing the images:

on his head we see both furred (hair + beard + sideburns -zones) and seemingly non-furred (middle part of face) areas

(tail is furry, obviously)

his hands + feet are mostly non-furred, but there is fur on at least the back of his wrists + ankles visible below the edge of his sleeves(/l...leg sleeves? is that what they're called?? sleeves, but for legs instead of arms)

regarding his neck, without going through the episodes he's in, the only shot i've been able to find with the right angle seems to be this MTG/YGO-style card of him:

(the origins of which i do not know. fanmade? official merch? is the image a still from the anime, or was it originally drawn for this card? and by whom? i haven't bothered to try to find out, will update if i do. but anyway)

it looks like there isn't any fur on his neck (except maybe down the back underneath where his long hair hangs down and obscures the area)

we also do not see any chest fur extending up past his neckline

...and beyond this, we know nothing.

i'm already exercising some creative license in how tall to make him (i've got a working number BUT i'm not saying yet in case i decide it's completely wrong whilst trying to actually draw him lol), since a) manga evidence is limited + anime evidence inconsistent, and b) i habitually will just directly contradict canon if i have an idea i'm attached to anyway... so i've got no issue on principle with just filling in the blanks according to my whim...

but i'm kind of just not getting any clear impression of what to picture re: fur pattern

considering looking at photos of actual monkeys to see if i that gives me any ideas... but in that case, what kind of monkey??

it's also complicated bc in a lot of shots he looks to me more anthropomorphic than the avg monkey? (but this is harder to tell w/ primates than w/ other creatures anyway...) (and not to mention the limited pool of Enma reference imgs AGAIN, but damn... a tiny handful of manga panels, and then his brief anime appearance was in the middle of the arc that brought us some of THE most iconic moments in wonky-lookin Naruto animation. if that fight in the anime was my sole reference for Hiruzen and Orochimaru, i wouldn't be very sure how anthropomorphic they were supposed to look either lmao)

I once was talking with my pharmacy manager about... democracy, about how while there's plenty of stupid people in the world we'd all probably prefer didn't vote, that it was very very hard to actually make a line that makes sure only wise people vote while keeping all the idiots out
