In love with the idea of captain marvel being Billy's imaginary friend. Like, it'd be so easy. Early depictions had them as almost fully separate people sometimes, like one soul with two minds, rather than just two filters like we mostly see now.

But imagine a Billy down on his luck, hurt and hiding from police and criminals alike, daydreaming the hours away as children do, taking inspiration from all the superheroes rising to fame, making little stories to play out his dreams of saving the world with a generic action doll he found while dumpster diving once. Most of the paint's rubbed off.

Red's his favourite colour, his comfiest jumper is a bright ruby even after all the grime and washes. Gold, too, it's shiny and warmer than silver! A hero cape is a must, big and eye catching! And he can fly, of course, like superman, and in his daydreams, when he's sore and frustrated after a long day's grind, his superhero is smart enough and knows all the right words to get the bullies to stop without resorting to fighting.

His superhero fantasy is one he spends a lot of time on, the first one he goes for when struggling to sleep at night, and he can picture it so clearly. Captain marvel is big and bright and kind, strong enough to lift the boxes for the old lady up the road who's moving all by himself, fast enough to catch Jamie who fell out of the tree on Saturday and broke his leg and couldn't come to class for weeks. He appears at the entrance to alleys when Billy is cornered, he steps up behind to cover for him when he gets caught shoplifting, he sits at the bus stop with him when it's pouring rain and the right bus doesn't seem to be coming.

And then the wizard comes, or rather whisks him away, and like a magician from a fairytale breathes life into his imaginary friend until Billy feels thrice his size and a million times more invincible.

From then on, captain marvel is a real hero, just like Billy is a real boy, and as one they save the whole city, and then the whole world, and get cats down from trees and help Mrs Victoria move the last of her boxes and she gives them a pinch in the cheek and cookies for the road and sometimes it hurts but it's so much better than he imagined.

Since I'm digging myself a hole tonight, I kind of actively hate the "But I am ready for something, and I think maybe that something could be with you."

Like, my first instinct was that it was sweet and that Buck was taking back a little bit of agency there and asking for what he wanted.

But I don't know. In so many ways, it also actually feels like it feeds into a very unhealthy pattern for Buck.

I mean, I might just be projecting because I cannot imagine ever being so infatuated with someone that I'd be like "I want to try a relationship with you" after only knowing them for 30 seconds and being left on the curb after a failed first date, but I digress.

But just. I don't know. This feels like such a pattern for Buck. Have someone express interest, only to then be rejected (Abby, Taylor, Natalia, now Tommy) and then chase them that much harder.

Like, Buck. Darling. PLEASE. Your value is not defined by the people for whom you have to prove your worth.

And I don't even mean this as anything directly against these partners. But Buck gets so caught up in forcing a relationship that he speedruns things without actually giving anyone (including himself) any space to grow into it, and it just feels kind of devastating that that's still where he is with himself.

we have talked about this to death but i guess i’ll keep doing it because i’m just thinking about 7x04 again. the question of whose attention buck wanted isn’t necessarily all that useful to me. i care more about the Choices. because the episode is obviously a 2x01 parallel but they could have done it in a way where they avoided the love interest treatment while retaining the bait-and-switch, they just didn’t? the way they could have had buck tommy and eddie sharing the screen together the whole time, with buck joining them for karaoke trivia or to work on the car, tommy dropping by the 118 to see eddie instead of eddie being on the phone, etc. like 2x01 buck could have gotten more hostile or just more upset when he realized someone was getting too close to his territory (eddie) - but if it were really mirroring 2x01, which ended with buck and eddie being close, then buck should have been getting upset At Tommy, while actually spending time with him, and they still could have kissed at the end without mentioning eddie that much! the end result might have been people coming to the conclusion that buck’s behavior in 2x01 was him being attracted to eddie but (1) oliver stark outright agreed with that interpretation anyway and (2) buck’s feelings would have been way less ambiguous and (3) at least tommy would not feel like a guest in the Buck and Eddie Universe. and it’s not even specifically about whether they’re endgame or not it’s more like, again, if this isn’t setting buddie up then they’re doing a disservice to the story of this specific relationship by letting eddie in as a looming distraction both in the text and outside of the show altogether. it would be poor storytelling. but whatever

that lovely Buckley sibling gifset you reblogged reminded me how much I desperately need another proper Buckley sibling storyline next season, though I’m sure it’s not gonna happen. Like, I have this fic that lives in my head (that I don’t have the ability to write) where Maddie gets sick with TVsicknessitus and needs a kidney transplant, and naturally Buck is a match (cos kidneys are much easier to match than bone marrow) but she doesn’t want to let him do it because she knows the damage it could do to him psychologically, thinking that he only has value if he’s of use, if he’s giving part of himself. But he finally convinces her (in typically dramatic, tearful Buckley fashion), and everything goes fine, and they do their adorable pinkie shake while in recovery after the surgery. But then the Buckley parents are there, and sure they’re trying, but they can’t help but still be awful, and they tell Buck they’re proud of him for what he’s done for Maddie, and it’s the first time he actually feels like they mean it, and while he’d never ever regret saving Maddie, it hurts how much it still hurts to know that’s his only real value to them, just like Maddie was worried about.
