I've seen many posts about the way Riza and Roy address each other, and I wanted to add my 5 cents as someone who is learning Japanese and reading the Japanese manga as part of that process (it's been fun and informative!).

There are two particular scenes I want to discuss in this post:

The first scene is their conversation under the tunnel on the Promised Day.

貴方は そちらに 堕ちてはいけない･･･!

You must not fall into that…

If you've been around here for any amount of time you probably know that Riza breaks protocol in this scene and calls Roy "貴方" (anata, you). You might also know that in Japanese people don't usually address each other as “you”, preferring to use someone's name and/or title to address them. So Riza calling Roy “anata” would sound too rude or too intimate (as this is what a wife might call her husband).

HOWEVER, anime and manga don’t use conventional Japanese. Any Japanese person will be quick to tell you that anime’s Japanese is not proper. It's often exaggerated for comedic or creative purposes. This phenomenon was once also common in English comics.

Think of all the cringe lines in the old Batman TV shows and comics. I even remember reading a note from Stan Lee in a 1960s Ironman comic saying: “We know people don't talk like this in real life”. So yeah…

The use of the many forms of “you” is common in anime/manga even if it's not proper Japanese. Fullmetal Alchemist is no exception to this.

Riza addressing Roy as “anata” is not exactly special or a sign of them being close to each other. That's just how she normally addresses people.

Well kind of…

FMA does follow its own internal formality logic. The way the members of the military address each other is very well defined. Riza not calling Roy — a superior officer — by his official title or by “Sir” IS breaking protocol. It's not how she usually addresses him, nor how she should be addressing him.

The reason why she does this here — to my still in-training Japanese eye — is not because of closeness, or kinship, or whatever. I read this as a plea from Riza — not Lieutenant Hawkeye — to Roy — not Colonel Mustang.

Arakawa actually goes out of her way to preserve a sense of distance and propriety between them by using the kanji form of "anata" (貴方) — which can be read as more formal or stiff — instead of the commonly used kana form (あなた). This is the only instance where we see the kanji form in Riza's speech (see Rebecca, Winry, and Barry above), so its use here is VERY intentional. To me this is Arakawa's way of showing the reader (not to Roy because he will hear "anata" regardless of how it's written) that even though Riza is using an improper, somewhat familiar, way to address him, she is still trying to be proper and show reverence to him as her superior officer.

In a sense this line is actually the opposite of Riza showing a sense of closeness to Roy. What it does show is just how much she looks up to him, and how serious she takes both of their roles.

貴方はそちらに 堕ちてはいけない･･･!

You must not fall into that…

Is both an order and a plea to the man that carries her and her father's dream.

The second scene I want to discuss is the one time Roy calls Riza by her first name.

リザ！！

Riza!!

Again, this might look somewhat weird or overly familiar. Calling someone by first name without any honorifics is usually a no, no in Japanese.

HOWEVER, Amestris is not Japan. Like I said, FMA follows its own formality system, which seems to align more closely with what you would expect in an Anglo society than in a Japanese one. The use of honorifics is not overly common, especially for honorifics like “chan” which may be the one expected from Roy in this scene.

In FMA “Kun” and “Chan” are pretty much exclusively reserved for children. And its use seems to be more of a form of endearment than a social protocol. For example, Riza and Fuery both use "Kun" for Ed and Al, but the rest of team Mustang does not.

Roy knows Riza's name, she's not a small child, they're of a similar social status, and she's not in a position of authority. There's no reason why he should call her anything but Riza.

This btw doesn't indicate any closeness between them. Just like someone calling you by first name wouldn't necessarily indicate any closeness in an English-speaking country.

Here are some examples of people calling each other by first name right after meeting:

Ed calls Rose by first name.

Winry calls Paninya by first name right after introducing themselves.

Al calls Ling by first name shortly after meeting each other.

More interesting than Roy calling Riza by first name, is Riza calling Roy “Mr Mustang” in return.

Riza calls Roy "マスタングさん" (Mr Mustang).

“San” (Mr/Mrs/Miss) is by far the most common honorific used in FMA, just like “Mr” would be in English. But regular people don't usually go calling each other “Mr last name”, especially not outside of a formal environment like school or work. In FMA “San” is mainly used for older people you're not very close to (The Elric brothers call many of the adults as "Mr Last name"), and for people with authority (Knox calls Roy “Mr Mustang” despite Roy being significantly younger).

The combination of first name (Roy to Riza) plus Mr last name (Riza to Roy) tells us that the relationship between Roy and Riza is NOT that of equals. In Riza's eyes Roy is in a position that warrants the use of “San”. And it makes sense, he's older, he's a Warrant Officer, and judging by Roy's questions about her family, and her “Do you remember me?” during the war, they're not too familiar with each other at this point.

Yeah… the way Roy and Riza address each other throughout the series is distant and proper of their station and rank. In terms of Roy's relationships the way Roy and Hughes, Chris and Roy, and even Knox and Roy, address each other is way more unusual than the way Riza and Roy do (I could make a follow up post about this if anyone is interested).

As a Royai fan I must say seeing this made me a bit sad. I can only wish and imagine a future where these two can finally address each other on equal footing and with the closeness their devotion to each other deserves.

And this is how the Phantomhive name disappeared together with the [L/N] name, with those who were supposed to get married burried together, and the manor becoming a museum, where people can learn about the history of Ciel Phantomhive and his fiancé [Y/N] [L/N]

As someone who kinda understands Japanese, the way the characters talk really adds a lot to their personality. I'm the type of person who really pays attention to the types of pronouns they use and Kuya's speech drives me nuts every time!!!

Okay, so first of all, we all know that Kuya has high regard for himself and that's justified. He's powerful and the wise old fox of the group plus, he's been with Huey the longest. With that being said, he talks way too respectfully and that gap in character really sells it for me.In Japanese he refers to himself as "boku" which is a very respectful term for a males. It's used in more formal settings or just situations that require more tact and manners in general. That's not all though, he uses it in its kanji form "僕" which means that it's even MORE formal! Just how cute is that?

Next, he never really refers to people with the pronouns for "you". He doesn't use terms like "omae", "anata", or "kimi" towards Eiden and the clan members but instead refers to them as titles like "wolf pup" for Garu/Karu, "old friend" for Quincy etc. This is just another show of Kuya talking very politely because using second-person pronouns can be seen as informal or rude in Japanese. As for Eiden, he refers to him as "Eito-san". Calling people by their names is just more respectful. In English, it's translated as "young master" and I think that's just a way for us to see how he still recognizes Eiden's position in some way. He also refers to Rei as such, so we can definitely see that Kuya recognizes hierarchial positions despite his personality. Even just generally, he uses "desu" and "masu" often so YES fox boy is very very respectful in his speech.

This is just word vomit so I don't know if I'm making any sense but I just cry inside everytime Kuya has new voiced lines because I also love the intonations in his voice. I don't really know Japanese fluently but I know enough to be able to play Japanese only games so if anyone wants to correct me or elaborate feel free to do so!

Sokushitsu Part II

Lord Toranaga thinks Han has been trying to keep his loyal African servant away from him. Although he could probably easily prove this, he decides to seek her out and join her in the hot springs.

I had never sat in a hot spring before, but feeling the heat on my body brought me to life. Han had allowed me some time to myself, and I was enjoying it quite immensely before looking up at the sky. The sky was so cloudy, almost chilly like. I looked back at the steaming water as I gently swayed my fingers from left to right.

“Too many years, fighting back tears why can’t the past just die! Wishing you were somehow here again… knowing we must say goodbye...”

I serenaded the water as I glanced over and was stunned by the beautiful horse and the lord who it carried. Lord Toranaga. He was watching me bathe, listening to me sing a song from an old play in England that I enjoyed with Han long ago. I paused in my singing, and he gave a gentle grunt as his horse approached the spring. I dipped into the water some to hide my body and turn away. He spoke sharply thinking he was angry I had turned to him. I had not seen him in a few weeks since the first night I laid with him. Han had kept me very busy around the tent, making sure my body was not in front of the lord for longer than a minute or two.

Lord Toranaga pointed at me and spoke. I winced and shook my head before bowing to apologize for not understanding him. I looked up at him and with his gloved hand he gently taps his throat as he tilted his chin some. He then pointed at me. I blinked some before possibly wondering if he wanted to continue to sing. So, I slowly began to hum and gently serenade, my eyes questioning him as if to wonder if that’s what he wanted. He nodded once with a light grunt. This time there was no Han to translate and so I nodded.

“Wishing you were somehow here again… knowing we must say goodbye.” I ever so gently began to extend my hand upward toward his horse simply to sing to him, to show my meager talent of singing to him. But he must have mistaken my gesture for he seemed almost intrigued and began to dismount his horse. “Time to forgive… teach me to live. Give me the strength to try! No more memories, no more silent tears… no more gazing across the wasted years.”

He then held his hand up as if for me to stop and I did immediately piercing my lips together. Lord Toranaga watched me for a moment, his gaze calm and calculative.

“Koko de mitsukaru kamo shirenai to iwa remashita.” he speaks quickly. (I was told I might find you here).

I blink and tilt my head some before bowing my head gently to still show respect but that I also did not understand his words.

“Toranaga-sama?” I merely asked gently and respectfully.

Lord Toranaga gave a soft smirk of amusement and continued to speak fast.

“Han wa anata o shigoto de totemo isogashiku sa sete imasu. Kare wa anata o watashi kara tōzakeyou to shite ita to sae omou kamo shiremasen.” He replied. (Han is keeping you very busy with work. You might even think he was trying to push you away from me.)

His words were so fast, and I blinked rapidly trying to decipher something from his fast-speaking words. I tilted my head looking at his lips and maybe I heard Han’s name. Lord Toranaga grinned some and gave a shook of his head. Now he began to slowly remove his sword, and I immediately moved back into the spring, my face showing caution. The lord noticed my fear and held his hand up as if to gently calm me. He sat his weapon down on the ground and then began to remove his robes, one article of clothing at a time. I felt the heat of the water seep into body, but things felt a lot hotter as the lord began to remove all of his clothes, letting his hair fall over his shoulders and I just stared at his back, noticing the scars that painted his back. My eyes widened.

“Mata anata to uso o tsukitaidesu.” he said. (I want to lie with you again).

I was still at a loss of words for what he was saying, until he finally turned to face me and that’s when I noticed his cock was half hard, but as my body tightened visibly at the gasp I released, it stood further up. Now I looked up at his face and I could tell he was gauging my reaction, my eyes. His eyes were asking me to have me. Once again, he asks me for permission, a mercy that is not given amongst many of my kind. I had to assume this was okay, that Han knew that his Lord was here. I wasn’t sure if I could deny him, but I did not want to deny him.

I bowed my head in acceptance of what he desires. I make a move to leave the springs, but he holds one hand up firmly and I stop. He gently motions his hand downward, and I nod understanding that he wants me to remain in the water.

He moves towards the edge of the spring, his stride strong and pride. He is happy in his nudity. I take in every inch of his body, locking it in my memory and slowly he steps down into the water, a low sigh slipping from his smooth lips. I smiled gently and bow again as if welcoming him into the water. He seems pleased with my welcome and gives a nod in acknowledgement. Once more my eyes began to roam over his face sensually moving to look him his chest over, exploring him like the first night. I would have to pay close attention to his face to read his features, his feelings in what he wanted. In this moment I felt the forest disappear and it seemed like only the two of us were on solid ground together.

Lord Toranaga gently motioned his hands to my own, lightly taking them and placing them against his warm skin.

“He would like you to explore any curiosities you may have. You may touch him.” Han’s words played in my mind. I smiled and gently let my wet and warm fingers lightly outline his chest muscles and slowly take in the scar on his body. I smiled enjoying the warmth of his skin. As I explored his chest, the lord also explored my body, lightly tracing his fingers over my breasts taking in the shape of them. I looked up at his eyes, the strong and cunning eyes. I raised my hands to gently caress his cheeks and his eyes fluttered close as he leaned his cheek into my palm’s embrace.

“Softuh.” he said in low English, his eyes admiring my face and I smiled remembering that he was pleased with my soft skin. Luckily, I made sure to learn a word that I liked about him. I continued to caress his cheek.

“Attakai.” I replied. (Warm) I loved his warm skin. It was hotter than Han’s, but still just right. Lord Toranaga smiled as if mildly impressed. I smiled and we let our hands explore each other’s different hair. His finger twirled into my curls and my fingers glided through his mildly greying hair.

His eyes studied every inch of my curls, every contour of my face. Now his hand came to my lips, his fingers gently roaming over my softer and fuller lips. He spoke again, and my ears picked up some words that I remembered Han translating back to the first night.

“Lord Toranaga would like your permission to kiss you.”

I gave a gentle nod, and before I could initiate it, he beat me to it. He was waiting no time in capturing my lips in a heated and dominate claim. I smiled against his lips, letting my hands rest on his shoulders. I could feel the desperation and the greed in this kiss alone. He pushed his body into my guiding me into the spring’s wall.

A low, hungry growl escaped from his lips. He’s missed my lips that was for sure. I gave his shoulders a gentle squeeze tasting a hint of mint on his lips. His hands glides over my head and into the water, gently caressing my back. This kiss became deeper, more intimate. He was kissing me like had not seen me in years, as if I was a lover taken from him by tragedy. But I found myself drawn to this feeling from him. Whatever he missed from me, he was being reunited with it. I feel his hands grip my thighs and with his strength he lives me from the water making me gasp at how strong he was. He sat me down on the ledge of the spring and kept my legs open, his eyes looking at me with a dark intensity before disappearing between my legs.

I began to move my lower body with his hand, noticing he wanted me to grind against his face. I did so lightly, not wanting to lose myself and forget whose face I was actually moving against.

The lord noticed my attempt to hold back, and he looked at me saying something sharply, he looked stern, and I looked at him with a glazed and confused look. He reaches his hands beneath my bottom grabbing both my cheeks and starts to continue to guide me through the grinding motion, only this time he was moving fast and hard. He wanted me to ride his face. I nodded and he leaned in and attacked my clit. I cried out letting my hips now grinding back and forth into his face and he lets out a grunt of approval.

The heat in my stomach was growing from the pleasure and pressure of his tongue. Oh god! I could already feel my walls begin to throb uncontrollably. My cries and moans grew more desperate as my head fell back and I moaned out loudly to the foggy sky. Waves upon wave of pleasure attacked my core as my hips ground into Lord Toranaga’s face. I was riding out my orgasm on his face and I had fallen back into the water from moving so much.

Lord Toranaga let out a low laugh before letting his lips find mine. The taste of my release coated both our tongues now as he shared my essence with me. I wrapped my arms gently around his neck pulling him close to me. I can feel his cock was twitching against my legs beneath the water. I feel one of his hands grip my leg and direct it around his hip. I lock that leg around him, and he leans into me, pressing his body into mine. “Kimochīi.” I mewl out and his lips meet mine once more in a raw and passionate kiss. The water moves back and forth with our movements, and I feel his face bury into my neck. “Aaah!”

He was hitting that sweet, sensitive spot inside me, that spot that made me see flashes of light in my vision. In and out, in and out, his cock moves inside me churning up my insides. How can one man bring my body to life so good. He grunts and pants lowly into my skin as our bodies continues to move with fervor. I can feel my stomach cramping, that delicious tightness that was going to send me over the edge. I cried out in desperation.

“I’m coming Lord Toranaga-sama I’m coming!” I cried out, and I feel his hand curl into my hand, the tightness of his grip telling me he that he understood and that he was close as well. I let out a loud moan as my body locks down around him. He holds me tight as I feel my walls spasming and he keeps moving until he finds his release deep inside my womb. He grunts low and hard in my ear. Our bodies shake hard against one another as I panted raggedly, completely out of breath and lightheaded.

He shifts our bodies so that he is sitting on the edge of the wall and holding me close to him, which I was not expecting. He was speaking in low pants, and I slowly and weakly looked up at him. He slowly placed his hand on his chest.

“Yoshii Toranaga…” he said before gently placing his hand on my chest. His eyes looking at me with a soft and curious gaze. He wants to know my name. I can feel my heartbeat slowly steadying under his warm palm and I took breaths before gently raising my hand to place it over my chest, but he does not move his hand from me, so now my hand is gently resting atop of his.

“Veil.” I said softly.

Slay the Princess Narrator, Princess, Voices in Japanese

Actually, I'm gonna go in chronological order of character mentions. So, we will start with:

The Narrator ナレーター(Nareetaa) [Narrator]

Simple and direct. There is a word for "narrator" that is of Japanese origin(語り手 lit. "Story hand" meaning narrator/storyteller), but the English word is the one more widely used. He also says "I" using the first-person pronoun 私(watashi), I'm assuming to indicate his "formal" attitude as, although men can use it, it's usually only in formal situations/you don't know someone well. He is of course referred to in third person with the kanji 彼(kare) meaning "he" or "him", but some voices like Contrarian and Smitten use katakana for him instead of kanji(カレ) for some different type of emphasis, I'm assuming.

Now in the Narrator's first lines, he tells you that there is a

Princess(or "The Princess" sometimes) プリンセス(Purinsesu) [Princess]

Like I mentioned in the "Princess and the Dragon" portion of last post, the Princess always referred to with the English word "Princess" rather than the Japanese word for princess.(She's also very often referred to with the pronoun 彼女(kanojo) meaning "she", of course). She tends to use the first person pronoun わたし(watashi), like the Narrator, although in her case it's written simply in hiragana, I assume to show less formality and more just how she refers to herself. 私/わたし is also used by women casually, in contrast to what I said in the Narrator section. She also tends to use あなた(anata, "you") for her 2nd person pronoun(formal/regular way to say "you").

The 1st and 2nd person pronouns the Princess uses also tends to change with each chapter:

The Spectre, Stranger(Chapter II), Damsel, Wild, Grey - 1st わたし(watashi, わたしたちwatashi-tachi when Stranger Princesses merge)・2nd あなた(anata)

Base Princess(Chapter I & Heart of TSM)*, The Nightmare, Moment of Clarity, Razor, Prisoner, Cage, Princess and the Dragon, Happily Ever After, Stranger(Heart of the Shifting Mound)- 1st 私(watashi, 私たちwatashi-tachi for Stranger)・2nd あなた

The Adversary, Eye of the Needle, Fury, Wraith - 1st 私・2nd お前(omae, can be seen as rude or more colloquial, for someone of equal/lower rank)

The Tower, Apotheosis- 1st 我(ware, not really actually used in real life, but gives a sense of profound, old, important-ness, typically used by king/god/godlike characters)・2nd お前(omae, though she also calls us 小鳥kotori "little bird")

The Beast - 1st アタシ(atashi, feminine, more casual form of watashi)・2nd オマエ(omae, she also calls us ヒヨコhiyoko "fledgling", all three of these words are written in katakana)

The Witch - 1st あたし(atashi)・2nd あんた(anta, colloquial/familiar form of anata, often considered rude, sometimes spiteful)

The Thorn - 1st あたし・2nd あなた(omg she uses the same 1st as the Witch but switches from "anta" back to "anata" omg y'all I'm cryingggg😭😭)

*Chapter I Princess tends to switch from あなた to お前 when antagonized(pre Tower, Adversary, Beast, Witch)

Now let's start with the homie, the one who's always got your back

The Voice of the Hero 勇者の声(Yuusha no Koe) [Voice of the Hero]

Simple enough. Something to note is that there are two words for "hero" in Japanese, 英雄(eiyuu) and 勇者(yuusha). 英雄(eiyuu) is what you call a great person, someone respected for accomplishing something and leaving great impact on society. 勇者(yuusha) is moreso a brave person sent on a quest of adventure to defeat evil/protect others. The former emphasizes the impact and admiration of their achievements, while the latter emphasizes courage and bravery. Someone said something like "勇者 is someone on a journey to slay a dragon, 英雄 is someone who had already come back home from slaying a dragon". In the context of the Voice of the Hero, rather than someone with emphasis on the change he's made in the world, the emphasis is on his morals and good-intentioned actions. He uses ボク(boku) as his 1st person pronoun, which gives him a little bit of a "good boy" typa feel. Or at least some politeness. It's also noted that he uses katakana for boku instead of the kanji 僕(boku)(which, the Long Quiet himself actually uses out loud).

I'm doing the voices in the same order as their respective Chapter II Princesses in the first post(based off the "Memories" menu)

The Voice of the Stubborn 頑固者の声(Gankomono no Koe) [Voice of the Stubborn]

Yeah okay, this one's the same. 頑固者(Gankomono) means "stubborn person". He uses 俺(ore) as his 1st person pronoun, a very masculine pronoun, can be seen as rude in a formal setting, but is very typical and normal for casual men speech.

The Voice of the Broken 負け犬の声(Makeinu no Koe) [Voice of the Loser]

Now this one's insulting. 負け犬 (makeinu) means loser, failure, you get the picture. Made up of the words 負ける(makeru, to lose/to be defeated) and 犬(inu, dog). But it's very fitting I must say(Broken would totally bark for the Tower 100%). He uses the 1st person pronoun 僕(boku).

The Voice of the Cold 冷血漢の声(Reiketsukan no Koe) [Voice of the Cold-Blooded]

冷血漢(reiketsukan) mean "cold-blooded person" or "coldhearted person", or simply "heartless". 冷(rei) meaning cold and 血(chi) meaning blood. Same meaning as in English, someone who can kill a Princess with no hesitation. Like Stubborn, he uses 俺(ore). (He also tends to use quite blunt/rude ways to refer to the princess)

The Voice of the Paranoid 妄想狂の声(Mousoukyou no Koe) [Voice of the Delusional]

妄想(mousou) means delusion, while 狂(kyou) refers to lunatic, or insanity or mental abnormality. Now, delusional isn't exactly the same as paranoid, but the Paranoid can come off as delusional sometimes. Of course, anything we believe in the construct becomes real, so the Nightmare route is full of our real delusions. He is the intrusive thoughts part of our brain that manifests into reality. And in other routes, the Paranoid can come off as a bit insane(the Cage and Apotheosis especially make him seem more erratic). He also uses 俺(ore).

The Voice of the Cheated 野放図の声(Nohouzu no Koe) [Voice of the Unruly]

野放図(nohouzu) can mean wild, arrogant, unruly, but it can also mean unchecked, uncontrolled, unregulated. I put unruly as I thought it fits a title better, but in my head I think more like "unhinged". And I guess that kinda does fit the Cheated's personality, his main objective in the Razor is to win against her, and he's basically like "let's keep getting stabbed until there are enough of us to be better than her", definitely not sound of mind(he also has that comment when you take the blade of "let's make her hurt for what she's done to us"). He very much let's his emotions take the better of him, usually hating on the Princess and the bullshit of everything or spiting the Narrator. He's also, again, very unhinged(mentioning dropping the Cage's head and he says "I mean... we could...") His pronoun is also 俺(ore).

The Voice of the Hunted 獲物の声(Emono no Koe) [Voice of the Prey]

This one I don't have much to say, as it's pretty obvious why he's named that way. And it's pretty much the same as the English name. Like the Hero, he uses the pronoun ボク(boku), I think it's in katakana to mirror the Beast's pronouns.(He refers to her with kanji in 彼女(kanojo) but he does refer to her with katakana in アイツ(aitsu, something akin to "that guy" or "that person", when he say's "She's coming(アイツがくる！)")

The Voice of the Opportunist お調子者の声(Ochoushimono no Koe) [Voice of the Easily Elated]

お調子者(ochoushimono) refers to someone who get carried away easily, someone who does whatever they feel/want, someone who gets easily elated from praise and flattery. I think this is both a funny and accurate translation of the Opportunist. We know he definitely gets carried away easily. He says that second line in the game even(freeing the Thorn: "I can do whatever I want, and I believe with with my whole heart...").I can't really think of instances of him getting praised off the top of my head but he does seem to think it will work on other people. He very much goes with the mood, attempting to curry favor so he can make sudden rash decisions out of nowhere. He uses 僕(boku) which I think fits his suck up personality.

The Voice of the Contrarian あまのじゃくの声(Amanojaku no Koe) [Voice of the Contrarian]

Direct and simple translation again. あまのじゃく(amanojaku) refers to someone with a perverse personality, or someone who opposes other's opinions. Interestingly, あまのじゃく can also refer to an actual small demon in Japanese folklore. I just thought it reminded me of that one line from him "Time to get back to our old devilish ways". He also uses 俺(ore).

The Voice of the Skeptic 疑心暗鬼の声(Gishin'anki no Koe) [Voice of the Skeptic]

疑心暗鬼(gishin'anki) is an expression/abbreviation, it means something like "suspicion creates monsters from shadows", it's about how suspecting something can lead you to suspecting everything, and doubt and suspicion makes you jump at shadows. I think this makes some sense, as his hyper-focused perception of things makes him question everything around him. He notices small details that grow into things bigger and more important than they were before. Also 俺(ore).

The Voice of the Smitten 騎士の声(Kishi no Koe) [Voice of the Knight]

This one I find really funny. 騎士(kishi) refers to the medieval type of knight, known for their chivalry and honor, like ones in armor and usually on horseback(騎(ki) relating to horses). I think it makes perfect sense in the context of the Damsel, a knight come to rescue his beloved Princess, to free her from the confines of the cabin. I also think it works in the Thorn for similar reasons. But I think in most other routes it's hilariously out of context, like "damn, this knight guy kinda freaky calling this blade Princess gorgeous/calling this Princess with a dress of her own skin gorgeous" Like the Tower, he uses 我(ware) giving him that old medieval feel, and he addresses the Narrator with 貴君(kikun), meaning "you" used by men in letters addressing their equals/lowers, and he addresses the Princess with 貴女(can be pronounced anata or kijo), polite language used to refer to women in letters. I was planning on this being the last post but I dont think I can fit it all here sorryyyyyyy rest of the stuff will be next post

for those of you who remember my original johnshi nickname hcs, here's some for johnshi^2 bc i love those fools and im thinking about them <3

(under the cut bc there's four of these fools and they have so many nicknames- 💀)

johnny

superstar - john calls him this the most, although kenshi will sometimes dip into it too- usually just when they're very endeared or are reminded how much they love him

hotshot - john calls him this when he's starting to get riled up and wants to make it worse

mini me - john is the only one who calls him this and it's only when he can really see where they overlap with each other

starlight - kenshi calls him this when he wants to fluster him or coax him into doing something, usually a little nefarious

koinu (little dog/puppy) - one of taka's only nicknames for him and it's used quite a bit and in almost every scenario

johnathan - also one of the only nicholas-names that taka uses, sometimes kenshi and john use it too, but mainly to mess around and playfully scold him

shujin (husband) - also a taka favorite, usually only uses it when talking about johnny in japanese

kenshi

baby boy - one of john's favorite nicknames for him, calls him this when he's being teasing or when he's holding kenshi and is reminded that he's just a little bit smaller than him

kendoll - a johnny favorite that john will dip into sometimes, basically replaces kenshi's name in johnny's vocabulary

babydoll - the johnny special, used when he's being teasing or a prick

hun/honey - usually used by johnny and john, always when they're feeling extra sweet

kenny - john's favorite, basically replaces kenshi's name in his vocabulary

koneko (little cat/kitten) - taka's nickname for him, used quite a bit when they're in private

otto (husband) - a taka favorite, calls him this when they're speaking in japanese to each other

john

tough/big guy - one of johnny's favorites, can be used to be endearing and soft or when he's being a prick

handsome - used by johnny, really only when john is all dressed up and he just has to remind him

old man - johnny and kenshi use this to get on john's nerves/rile him up bc it works every time

starlight - kenshi also uses this for john, loves how it always gets him to soften out

dear - used by kenshi, usually in a teasing way but sometimes when he can tell that john is really soft or really needs the reminder that he's there, he'll use it too

inu (dog) - taka's classic, calls john this almost all the time when he's in a comfortable setting

tsuma (wife) - taka calls him this when he's speaking about him to kenshi in japanese, and calls him this to his face and has for almost thirty years... john still doesn't know what it means.

takahashi

taka - used by all of them, basically replaces "takahashi" in all of their vocabulary's-

big guy/big man - johnny and john use these the most, usually on account of his size but also as a way to relax his nerves when he's upset

anta/anata (you) - usually only used by kenshi in an endearing way when they're with his family, always gets this really soft little smile out of taka

mr. cage - used by john and johnny to tease, always gets taka to huff and smile

ojiisan (old man) - usually used by kenshi and johnny, is meant to be teasing bc taka pretends to hate it, will groan and make a show of turning to leave, but he loves it... it gets him all melty if they call him that in the morning...

baby - a john special, usually only calls him this to tease or in more dire situations where taka needs to be grounded

moonbeam - one of john's nicknames that he uses on the rare occasion that they're alone and he wants to hold taka's face, trace his features and really get a feel for him again... always said with a reverence that taka forgets exists until he says it again.

bonus/miscellaneous nicknames!!

obasan/obaasan (auntie/grandma) - takeda calls john this after years of hearing takahashi call him "tsuma"... usually says it to tease- john does not know what these nicknames mean either 💀

peepaw - cassie calls takahashi this when she thinks he's being an old man, the usual phrase being "peepaw needs his nap" when taka says he'll be "returning to his office" around noon

stinky - kenshi and taka usually use this to refer to johnny or john after sparring or a workout, will scrunch their face to say it in this kind of scrungly voice- always gets a little pout out of either of them and they think it's super cute

brat - almost always aimed at johnny and kenshi, usually john saying it through grit teeth and with a hand squeezing their nape

little demon - a taka nickname for kenshi when he's being a mischievous little bastard (which is quite often)

"my ____" - used by all of them to refer to each other, usually to put an emphasis on the fact that they're together or to tease/fluster each other

"your ____" - used by mainly kenshi when talking to taka in japanese, most often used to refer to john as "your (taka's) wife" to tease- always gets taka to smile with a certain smugness... also used by all of them when referring to each other in certain situations- taka will refer to johnny and kenshi as "your (john's) boys", john and johnny will refer to taka and kenshi as "your takahashi" or "your kenshi" if they don't want to be the one to deal with their nonsense, same the other way around with "your cage" or "your johnny" when taka and kenshi dont want to deal with them 💀

What’s In A Title?: Variations on “Master” in Black Butler

旦那様・当主・ご主人様・マイロード・様・坊ちゃん

Throughout the manga, we see various titles used for Vincent, Real Ciel, and Our Ciel, with these being more obvious in the original Japanese than in translation.

This post will focus on Sebastian and Tanaka and the various terms they use at different points within the story.

I personally am not an expert on keigo (the most formalized of speech that Sebastian speaks almost exclusively in in Japanese), so I am not really going to be going into the subtleties there. (Other posts have tackled this already, and probably with more expertise than I could.)

I also want to emphasize I am only now beginning to read the manga from ch 1 in Japanese (I’ve only read bits and pieces until the most recent ~25 chapters or so), so it is possible I am missing some examples or variations mentioned in other parts of the 200+ chapters not brought up here.

However, I think we can still look at these subtle differences even if you are an English speaker who knows zero about formality levels/humble speech in Japanese. And if you’re willing to take this journey with me despite these caveats, keep reading.

旦那様・当主・ご主人様・マイロード・様・坊ちゃん

Before I get into the variations between Sebastian and Tanaka, let’s look at some of the titles used:

The variations are as follows:

Dannasama - 旦那様

Toushu - 当主

Shujin - 主人

Goshujinsama - ご主人様

“my lord” - ご主人様・マイロード

Lord Ciel - シエル様

Bocchan - 坊ちゃん

Tanaka

Tanaka uses #1, #2, #3, #6, and #7. Let’s look at him first.

Dannasama - 旦那様

Means “master of the house,” but is also a term you’d use with a boss or someone of higher status, akin to “sir” in some usages in English.

Tanaka uses this term only for Vincent, so far as I know.

Toushu - 当主

Means “present head of the family.”

Tanaka uses this when speaking about/to Our Ciel when distinguishing him from his father, the previous head. For example, in the murder arc when he points out that it isn’t appropriate for the master of the house to be upset by a servant’s death.

Shujin - 主人

Means “head of the household” or “master” (among other uses). This version does not have the added formality/humbleness of the versions that Sebastian uses (the go- prefix and the -sama suffix).

Tanaka uses this when speaking generally about “the master” or “one’s master,” for example, in the end of the murder arc when he tells Sebastian a Phantomhive butler shouldn’t die before his master.

Lord Ciel - シエル様

Just Ciel + the kanji for “sama,” is how Tanaka refers exclusively to Real Ciel throughout the manga, to the best of my knowledge, when speaking to or of him specifically, individually.

Above, we see how in the example on the right (in the present), Tanaka calls RC “Lord Ciel” directly, and in the example on the left, how he refers to him that way in the past as well when not directly addressing him. (OC is “you” or 貴方 there.)

Bocchan - 坊ちゃん

Means “young master,” and is how Tanaka refers to Our Ciel almost exclusively (except for the examples above), not only before the tragedy but after. He immediately knew that Ciel was OC and not his twin, and we know this because of the address.

Sebastian seems to have picked up the title from Tanaka, because he does not use it before they see him. Above, he even puts special emphasis on the title when he uses it for the first time. And as far as I know, aside from “my lord,” he refers to Ciel as such exclusively thereafter.

旦那様・当主・ご主人様・マイロード・様・坊ちゃん

Sebastian

Sebastian uses #4, #5, and #7.

Goshujinsama - ご主人様

Means “head of the household” or “master” (among other uses). This version does include the formal/humble prefix “go-” and suffix “-sama.”

This is the first term that Sebastian uses for Ciel when he shifts from “you” (貴方, anata) to “master,” when they first begin establishing the contract. He also uses a variation on this I’ll explain next, but THIS version, said exactly like this, he stops using after their visit to Tanaka.

You can see in the above examples that he uses this address both before and after he assumes his butler form.

I expect that this is likely how Sebastian has referred to all his masters as I believe it’s the most humble/formal way of addressing one’s master (aside from more specific titles that may be used).

My Lord - ご主人様 ・マイロード

Even before he adopts “bocchan,” Sebastian sometimes refers to Ciel in English as “my lord,” as Yana informs us via the katakana spelling on the kanji. Yet she still writes it in keigo, as if to reminds us of the manner in which Sebastian speaks, and that even if he has dropped the uber formal “goshujinsama,” he is, in a sense, still using it throughout the story.

Bocchan - 坊ちゃん

As I explained above, this seems to be a manner of address Sebastian picks up from Tanaka. It seems to imply that he does so partly because he recognizes that the old man is aware of Ciel’s real identity (unlike Madam Red, who assumes he’s RC, which is why Ciel looks so dead-eyed while Sebastian is smirking).

Maybe he does it to mock him at first, a reminder that Sebastian knows he’s a liar. Maybe he adopts it because he’s never had a young master before and decides it could be a fun change of pace.

Unless Yana says something or reveals more insight into Sebastian’s POV, however, we may never know exactly why he made this shift and stuck with it.

And that’s my rundown of how “master” is used in Japanese by Sebastian and Tanaka, depending on who they’re addressing or referring to and at what point we are in the story. As you can see, most of it is lost in translation.

Dear Diary,

It's his native language.

His eyes shine like diamonds. While I love my jewels, there is something about his native tongue that plaques my mind. Today he spoke to me and, while I understand a bit from our tutoring sessions, I couldn't understand him. He puzzled me, something he hasn't done so since I first met him. "あなたも私のことを空想しますか?" He asked. (Anata mo watashinokoto o kūsō shimasu ka?) "What did you say?" I asked. He stayed quiet, smirked at me, and laughed. "Nothing, nothing," he assured. His shoulders relaxed. I didn't even know they were tense in the first place. "No what you say?" I asked again, my eyebrows furrowed. "If there's a problem then let me help you," I demanded. He ruffled my hair again and walked ahead of me. "Maybe I'll ask again after practice," he said. I jumped and smacked my hand down on his shoulders making them tense again.

"OW!"

"SO YOU DID SAY SOMETHING!"

He, in fact, did not tell me what he asked for. Maybe he shouldn't have asked in the first place. Jury, I am a horrible friend and I plead guilty. Now, not only do his eyes haunt me but his voice as well. His native tongue to be specific. His accent, paired with his deep voice are enough to keep me awake at night.

My body goes against my wishes as does my mind. Now I yearn to hear him speak in his language again in my fantasies. Yet knowing so little about his, it never happened.

"くそ!" (Kuso!) Sae shouted once on the field. I looked up from the water bottle I was refilling and looked at the  him confused. "What did he just say?" His coach glanced at me and remembered, "Oh, yeah! You're his language arts tutor. All he did was say " fuck" in Japanese. He curses sometimes under his breath. Hearing him curse is quite rare." I hummed at that in thought. "We all have our off days, I guess," I mumbled.

One time in class, Sae and I were doing a group project together and Jordan poured in the wrong vial. "馬鹿野郎! (Baka yarō!)" He shouted at him. I was confused and so was he. Peter on my left snorted before saying, "He called you an idiot." I laughed boisterously, Peter following me, while Jordan shrank down embarrassed. "I figured that," he grumbled, "You didn't need to translate it. I watch anime." That only made us laugh louder.

Another time, Sae and I were heading to lunch but caught the Math teacher and Gabrielle. "なんてふしだらな女なんだ. (Nante fushidarana on'nana nda.)" He sneered. Using my Google Translate, I caught what he said, but didn't say a word. He took my hand and hurried me to the cafeteria. "The faster we get our food, the faster we can leave," he muttered. I could in my hand while I pocketed my phone. "What a slut," he said. "Huh?" I wondered. He looked back at me with those cold eyes. "I said What a slut," he repeated, "Next time just ask me for a transition. Sometimes Google Translate isn't so reliable." Embarrassed, I gripped his hand a little tighter and held my phone in my pocket a little closer. "Sorry," I mumbled. I could've sworn he had a small smirk on his face. Yet when I blinked it was already gone. I took a deep breath and tried to calm myself.

When we sat down for lunch, he stared at me while I ate my food. I felt small under his watch. He was comforting, a shelter I wanted to reside in forever, but those eyes.. they made me weak. Jordan snickered already knowing what was going on through my head. I glared at him before looking at my tormentor: My warden who makes sure I remember who entrapped me in the first place. "Do you need something?" I asked him slightly irritated because of Jordan.

"You like me speaking in my native language," he said bluntly, "Don't you?" I froze and Jordan bursted out laughing. Registering what he said, I blushed red from embarrassment. "W-was that obvious?" I wondered. Fuck, now I stuttered. Great. Just great. "Not really," he said. (Yes it was.) He finally relieved me of my stress by looking at his plate instead. "I'll make sure to speak more in them for you," he said smoothly. Not an ounce of embarrassment, no second thoughts, no regret, just confidence. WHAT THE FUCK!?

"I'd like to hear you speak in your native tongue too," He requested. Jordan wiggled his eye brows at me. I scoffed at threw a piece of my food at his, which he unfortunately caught it in his mouth. Feeling his eyes on me again, I looked back at him, shrinking down in my seat. "S-sure, sure, cool," I nodded.

Sae is going to be the death of me!

Sunoo had a lazy smile on his face as he pulled a brush out of your makeup bag. He had practically begged you to let him do your makeup, pleading with round eyes and pouting lips. How could you ever deny him? When you said yes, you swore his eyes literally shone. He had a similar gleam in his eyes now as he gently cupped your face with one hand, tilting your head upwards.

“Close your eyes for me, cutie.”

You complied, feeling the soft bristles of your brush glide over your eyelids shorter after. You could feel Sunoo’s warm breath hitting your cheeks, and knowing he was so close paired with the fact he was likely intently staring at your face made heat rise in your face. Of course, Sunoo noticed, he was holding your face after all. With a light giggle, he squeezed your cheeks together as you let your eyes flutter open. He still wore a soft smile as he gazed at you. His grip loosened as he leaned forward to press a light peck against your lips, lingering near your face before meeting your eyes.

“I’m so glad you’re mine. You’re my sunshine.”

Yang Jungwon

 - not old timey persay but something like “dear”

 - although another thing i think he would do is learn terms of endearments in other languages and call you by them

 - for example, “cara mia” (’beloved/dear’ in italian), “media naranja” (’my better half’ in spanish), “mon petit chou” (’my little cabbage’ in french)

“You ready, dear?”

You shrugged on a coat, turning to Jungwon as he stood by the door. He held out his hand as you approached, and you took it with a smile. Your fingers locked together as you stepped out into the night air, a cool breeze hitting your face. The two of you walked in a comfortable silence, simply enjoying each other’s presence. As you neared the park, Jungwon peeked at you out of the corner of his eye. He hesitated before speaking up in a soft tone.

“Cara mia, do you want to get churros? There’s a shop just around the corner that sells them even this late.”

Jungwon had a hopeful look on his face, swinging your joined hands as you walked. You nodded in agreement, letting a wide smile cross your face. The two of you changed directions to make the quick detour, securing 2 churros before returning to your original path. Jungwon munched happily on treat as the two of you sat down, resting to finish your desserts before beginning the walk back. You shifted closer to him and he wrapped one arm around you, the both of you gazing at the sky. 

“You complete me, media naranja. I’m forever yours.”

The studio was quiet except for the light laughter of none other than you and your sweet boyfriend, Niki. You had been practicing a duet, but most of today’s practicing wasn’t taken very seriously. The two of you were in a fit of giggles as you danced, each making silly faces whenever you caught the other’s gaze. By the time the song ended, Riki was doubled over in laughter as you failed to hide your giggles behind your hand. He caught his breath enough between laughter to call out to you.

“Okay, okay, one more time! This time we’ll be serious, snookums.” He grinned, a snort leaving you at the nickname. 

Niki snickered before gesturing at you to get into position as he crouched by the speaker, ready to begin the music. After receiving conformation that you were ready, he hit play before dashing beside you. The two of you glided along with the music, in sync with each other’s bodies as if you were one. You still made eye contact often, but it felt different now. Both of you were focused on each other and the music, blocking out everything but this moment. When the song ended, you both stared at each other, breathing heavily. Riki reached up and grabbed your face, pulling you in for a sweet kiss. The world faded out again, now only focusing on Niki and the way his soft lips moved against yours. When he broke away, a smile stayed on his face.

“I hope you know how much you mean to me, あなた.”

a long minute passes between gojo and you, gazes fixed on the other person and only them, before you lick your chapped lips - the boy's attention instantly going to that hynotic motion of your tongue...

and you pinch his arm.

"ow shortie!!!! what the fuck was that for!?!?" the boy yells, massaging the sore spot on his arm, before out of nowhere, the red signal glows green and he has to shift his focus to the steering wheel.

you toss him a mad scowl from the passenger's seat, one he catches effortlessly, winking, when an observation crashes upon him and he coos. "aww, did my itty-bitty-shortie-baby just get flustered by me? aww, is she blushing? aww, she's so cute!!!"

"i asked you to help me learn how to confess, gojo," you grumble with a glare at him, "not make fun of me."

your co-passenger makes an affronted face at your words, although, internally, he is beside himself. and to be honest, how can he not?

you're in the same car as him, on a three hour long drive from tokyo to nikko, exchanging declarations of love with one another while the boy's (spare) shades slide down the bridge of your nose and he hums along to the songs you choose on the stereo... if a few facts are being ignored (like the one where this is your mission and the two of you are in your uniforms), the second-year can totally imagine the two of you going on a weekend getaway as a couple now.

a soft smile settles on his lips, as he sneaks a glance of you from the corner of his eyes. "i wasn't trying to make fun of ya, shortie," he says, "i was just responding to your statement."

"but that directly?" you ask, shock and embarrassment flooding your face. your friend stifles a chuckle. "i commented on the moon being beautiful. you should've said something like 'it is, isn't it?' - but no, you went and replied, 'so are you'. my admirer will never be so direct with me; why don't you try to understand that simple fact?"

there are a few days when gojo is really divided between wanting to flick your forehead hard and wanting to kiss you senseless.

today seems to be one such glorious day.

swerving the car onto a stop by the side of the road, he lets his head fall onto the steering wheel and lifts it to lock his eyes with yours.

"and what makes you think your admirer won't be a direct guy?"

"the fact the guy couldn't even show his face to me once, and did not even want to share his contact details with me, despite me pestering him via suguru and nanami, for ages now."

okay, ouch, that one's on him.

yet, never being the one to accept defeat, he throws back, "and what if he wants to build up some mystery before your first meet? you love mysteries, don't you? the guy likes you; he must be trying to use that knowledge to confess to you."

"i like only murder mysteries, 'toru," your deadpan response arrives in a beat, which then evolves into curiosity when you ask, "but how do you know so much about these things? how many relationships have you been in, 'toru?"

it's gojo's turn to grow embarrassed now. hand reaching out to fiddle with the bracelet on your wrist, he answers, "zero."

"hey, don't be embarrassed," he watches you shoot him a grin. a tiny smile is all he manages to return while you continue, "i too have never been in a relationship. anyone you ever confessed to?"

"isn't that evident from my previous answer?"

"nope! you might've gotten rejected; who knows~"

the grin on your lips widens; gojo looks at it for once before dropping his gaze. under the interplay of the light and shadow from the leaves of the tree, there appears to be something different about you - the sorcerer can't really pinpoint what it is but he knows there is, and he doesn't want to dwell on it - lest he loses his self-control.

"i have never confessed to anyone, and whatever confessions i have received, i've either ignored or rejected them all."

"ooh, same!" your excited voice ringing within the confines of the car, you lift his palm to meet yours in a hi-five. gojo lets you do so - before you place it between your two palms and clasp it, a sharp gasp drawn from him at the action. you shoot him a concerned look.

"your hand's freezing cold, 'toru? you okay?"

"yeah, yeah, i'm fine," the boy mumbles, moving his hand away from your comforting warmth - an action he doesn't want to do but has to, for the sake of propriety. something happening out of sheer impulse isn't how he wants to start his story with you - you don't deserve that.

"um, okay," you mutter, then inquire, timid and awkward, "i've one last question on your love life... can i ask that? you can totally ask me to stop though if you're feeling uncomfortable."

"ask away," the boy answers with a smile, he can see, is tense in the mirror as he restarts the car and returns it to the road. a long second passes before you ask, "have you ever liked anyone, 'toru?"

"yeah... there's one girl. i love her."

"oh."

the monosyllabic answer sends a torsion through his chest and gojo twists towards you - only to find a cryptic smile resting on your lips.

discarding your shoes, you fold your knees upto your chest and rest your head atop them, facing him. your senpai is really thankful a soft song comes onto the stereo next, for were it not so, he's certain your soft question would have gone unheard.

"how does your first love feel? beautiful, right? the way it's in books, songs and movies... isn't it?"

gojo takes a moment to mull over your query.

it is... yet it isn't.

the flutters in his heart when you skip past him in the corridors with a beam; the butterflies in his stomach when you plop on the chair next to him in the cafeteria; the dizziness in his head when your face is too close to his; the utterly-unplatonic thoughts of you plaguing him, day and night, dusk and dawn...

the goggles-wearing sorcerer's catching feelings for you is way more realistic and easier to digest than that.

if talks in the mirror over the bathroom sink counts, the white-haired boy has had countless discussions so far - but he doesn't tell you that - choosing to return your question with a question of his own.

the young sorcerer looks away from you for a beat, letting his gaze travel over the rows of trees dotting the increasingly mountainous terrain, then looks back at you.

the two of you are awfully close to the destination of your trip.

removing a hand from the wheel and reaching it out to intertwine his fingers with yours, the boy asks, "wanna go visit that patisserie i was talking of the other day after this mission? i've heard the sweets there are worth dying for."

"but won't it be late evening by the time our job's done?" you ask back with a frown, "and we also have to return to the school... why don't-"

"it's a full moon tonight, shortie," gojo interjects you with a soft little smile. you stare befuddled at him for a while, before the bulb lights to life in your brain - an event bringing a semblance of relief to the boy - and you laugh.

"oh, oh, oh!" you exclaim, waggling your eyebrows, "i know exactly what you're going to do. you're gonna create a romantic atmosphere to teach me how to confess, aren't you? method teaching - eh, 'toru?"

a chuckle is what gojo decides to offer to your buzzing curiosity, until later this evening.

"i'll let my heart do what it wants to do."
