x Enjoy x
I have this thing where I get older but just never wiser
Midnights become my afternoons
When my depression works the graveyard shift
All of the people I've ghosted stand there in the room
It had been an issue for years, one that was directly caused by your mother.
It’s not that she was a villain, and it wasn’t like she knew she was doing it anyways, it was always something that just managed to slip out of her mouth in passing moments . A quick ‘that shows your back fat’ there and a ‘are you sure you like that color? It washes you out baby’. Always said with that tone that made you rethink every decision in life.
She did it out of love.
But the comments she made built up, that and the pressure of school and social media building up. It all took a toll on you. You found your life mixed with new issues. Anxiety, self-doubt, depression, and you became a new person.
It was like a shadow version of you, one that tracked how much she ate and thought about how loud she laughed and how much was too much talking. Every single move you made was tracked and overthought.
But then Roy came into the picture.
At first you did what you usually did, you tried to speak low and not draw too much attention. Tracking how much you laughed and how much you ate. It was fine because your friend group never really realized it, they didn’t know a thing was out of place. But Roy, who had been brought by his sister, was quick to call it out.
“Fucking stop that.” He muttered when you tried to fix your skirt, using his hand to slap yours away. “You look fucking perfect. Take a breath, yeah?”
“I just…. I’m debating the color, everyone else wore pastels and I hadn’t realized that it would be that type of party.” You admit, body hot with embarrassment as a group of girls pass you at the party. But that was the least of your worries, you had eaten too much cake and had tripped on the stairs in front of your friends. Could everyone see your makeup on your neck? Were they laughing at you-
“Do you overthink everything?” Roy blurts, catching your elbow to pull you back gently as a waiter with a heavy tray passes by. “Because I’ll tell you right now that you’re the prettiest fucking woman at this party.”
“You can’t say that at someone’s birthday party.” You laugh, stepping closer to him without realizing. “That’s one of the biggest rules. It’s like saying someone is prettier than Aphrodite. Next thing you know that person will be cursed to marry your father because the goddess hates you.”
“I’m sorry?”
“It’s…. Greek mythology. I’m not going to marry my dad. It… okay. I’ve ruined this so I am just going to-” You move away quicker than he can follow and you think that it was over. But you had not known just how determined Roy Kent was.
Soon enough he was taking you out, one date became 4 which led to a relationship. 10 months in and you were the happiest you had ever been. He saw you, in every outfit and every mood and every way, and he loved you just as you were.
But there was something you didn’t expect, the amount of attention that would come with dating a professional football player. It was a whole new demon in itself.
I should not be left to my own devices
They come with prices and vices
I end up in crisis (tale as old as time)
I wake up screaming from dreaming
One day I'll watch as you're leaving
'Cause you got tired of my scheming
(For the last time)
Lunches with your mother were the worst, and yet you loved her more than anything. Today she chose an extremely fancy restaurant dressed in a Valentino outfit and her makeup to perfection as she cut her salad up with her fork and knife.
“Oh this is dreadful.” She sighs, shaking her head. “There is barely any chicken in here. This is insane. Do you see chicken?”
“There is chicken.” Roy shrugs, narrowing his eyes a bit. Lunches with them were always such a weird dynamic considering they were exact opposites. Your mother looked for drama, she thrived off of arguing. Roy chose brutal honesty, he worked best on shutting arguments down before they could even start.  “It’s right there.”
“Oh, baby that is a terrible color on you.” She huffs, sitting the plate back down and turning her glare on you as her hand raises to call the server over. “It washes you out. What have I told you about-”
“She looks fucking stunning today.” Roy scoffs, blinking slowly.
“It’s fine.” You whisper to him, trying to defuse the situation.
“No, it’s not.”
“Now I read somewhere that there is a big fundraiser gala coming up, it was in the paper. I assume you both will be attending.” Your mother begins, smiling when the server starts heading over. “You should let me dress you darling. I know how you get anxious about that all and I want to make sure you look your best.”
“She’ll look bloody fantastic in anything-”
“Oh you finally decided to serve your table.” Your mother interrupts him, talking to the server and completely disregarding your boyfriend.
He takes a moment to lean over to you, catching your eyes. “I’m about to stab my fork into my fucking eye.”
“I know.” You smile, leaning in closer to kiss his cheek which makes him growl a bit at the pda but you see the smile he fights off anyways. “We’ll be gone soon.”
“You look great and the dress you pick will be fantastic. Don’t listen to her.” He gruffs out.
“Have you seen those posts of you two? They were commenting on your age difference and I just want you to know that I do not think you are too immature for him. Truthfully honey I am proud, I never thought you’d make it with someone so accomplished. I mean it’s not like you had many prospects.” She laughs as the server sends Roy a wide eyed look while taking her plate away leaving the table once more.
“That’s it.” Roy snaps, slamming his silverware down on the table and pointing his finger at her. “You watch how you speak to her. She’s perfect. And she will be a bombshell at the gala.”
Your mothers face flushes, blinking at him slowly as Roy goes back to his meal like nothing happened while you fight off a smile, your foot rubbing his calf under the table in a silent thank you before you try to pull it back only for his legs to slam shut keeping your foot held there.
He sends you a sharp look, but the corner of his mouth curves up and you know that was his way of showing his love so you take it, smiling right back at him.
It's me, hi, I'm the problem, it's me
At tea time, everybody agrees
I'll stare directly at the sun but never in the mirror
It must be exhausting always rooting for the anti-hero
The dress you chose for the gala was perfect, you were excited to wear it and truthfully you were excited about the whole thing. This would be the first event you had ever attended with the Richmond team in the public eye, and you wanted to make a good impression.
But your mothers words from the years rang through your head constantly as you waited for their practice to end, leaning against the wall in the hallway as you thought about everything.
“Oh! Hello.” A angelic voice rings out, pulling your attention to Rebecca Welton coming down the hallway, making you stand up quickly.
“Ms. Welton! Hi, hello, hey…. I’m saying hi in too many ways.” You blush, moving to shake her hand. “It’s great to see you again.”
“I was just about to say the same thing. Are you waiting for the boys?”
“I am, yeah. My car is in the shop so I need a ride.”
“Oh lovely, will I be seeing you at the gala? I have been planning it for weeks, my ex husband used to plan it. The wanker.”
“I’ll be there. I just hope I dress well enough.” You laugh slightly, but her eyebrow raises and you panic slightly. Did everyone on this team just see right through all your shit?
“You’ll look perfect. I wish I still had a figure like yours.”
“ANGEL!” Someone calls out before you are lifted into the arms of Danny Rojas, kissing the side of your face as he swings you around.
“Alright. Set her down, will ya?” Roy snaps, coming around the corner and rubbing his knee as Danny sets you down quickly, kissing your cheek one more time before heading away. You lean forward and rub Roy’s knee right where you know he feels the most pain.
“Is it hurting a lot?” You mumble, as he pulls your hand away. “Sorry, did I hurt you?”
“No, I just don’t want to moan in the middle of this hallway. Let’s go home?” Before you can even answer he is grabbing your bag and moving to take you to the car.
Sometimes I feel like everybody is a sexy baby
And I'm a monster on the hill
Too big to hang out, slowly lurching toward your favorite city
Pierced through the heart, but never killed
Roy was in a shit mood the day of the gala, slamming cupboard after cupboard. You knew he was irritated about having to dress up and see the reporters that used to write about him all the time, and you knew in moments like this it was best to let him work through it. But sometimes you just couldn’t stay away.
Shuffling closer, in his shirt, you wrap your arms around his center and shove your face into his back. He huffs out as he keeps swiping  the sponge against the counter, but he doesn’t push you away so you take a chance and kiss between his shoulder blades. “It’s going to be okay. What they say about you doesn’t matter.”
He sighs out, letting go of the sponge before turning around in your arms and wrapping his own around you, placing a kiss on your forehead.
“You were young and they were assholes for that…. So fuck them.”
“Fuck them.” He repeats.
“You’re going to walk by them in your fine ass suit with your fine ass body-”
“Please don’t objectify me.” He mumbles, but a smile is already on his lips as he leans down to kiss you deeply before pulling back. “And I will have the brightest fucking gem with me tonight.”
“Oh, c’mon.” You blush, trying to pull back but his arms are tight around you.
“I think we need to fuck.” He huffs kisses at your face again.
“Don’t be so crass!” You laugh, trying to escape him and shuffling you both to the bedroom right as your phone rings. “It’s my mother.”
“No. Don’t answer.”
“I have to, or she’s gonna be mad.” You answer back, watching his face turn dead serious as he looks at you. His hands come up to rub at your jaw.
“You listen to me you little rat.” He mumbles, you fighting back a laugh at the nickname. “Don’t listen to a word she says, because you are beautiful.”
“I won’t. I promise.” You promise, kissing his lips deeply and losing yourself to the kiss for a moment before he pulls back and shuffles to continue cleaning the counter. You swipe your thumb across the screen and mumble out a “Hello mother.”
“Oh you’re there! I thought you were about to ignore my call.” She snaps through the phone.
Did you hear my covert narcissism I disguise as altruism
Like some kind of congressman? (Tale as old as time)
I wake up screaming from dreaming
One day I'll watch as you're leaving
And life will lose all its meaning
(For the last time)
You broke your promise, and you let your mother get the best of you.
Her words from earlier bounce around your mind as you get ready. You debate whether or not your hair looked healthy as you spray hairspray across it. Did it look greasy? Untamed? Could they see your split ends?
Was your nail polish the wrong color? Was there a patch of hair on your legs that you missed? Did the dress color wash you out? Did you look too heavy? Was it too late to cancel?
“You look…. “ Roy blinks, coming up behind you to help zip the dress. “Fuck.”
“Is that good?” You ask, biting at your lip as he leans to kiss the nape of your neck.
“Good? You look bloody amazing.” He snaps, kissing your neck one more time before standing straight. “Now let’s go make money.”
“What are we fundraising for? I never looked into it?”
“I have no fucking clue.”
“Right.” You laugh, turning with your hand in his as he kisses your knuckles softly. “Then let’s go make money for whatever needs money.”
“Make a fortune.”
It's me, hi, I'm the problem, it's me (I'm the problem, it's me)
At tea time, everybody agrees
I'll stare directly at the sun but never in the mirror
It must be exhausting always rooting for the anti-hero
Your lip was worn down from the amount you had been biting it.
Walking up to the gala you saw a red carpet with dozens of flashing cameras and begin to panic as you get closer, your hand tightening in Roys as he stands straighter. You would not be able to handle the cameras and see your picture all over the internet. What would people say? They would trash you, oh how bad would it be?
But Roy, ever the perfect man, simply held your hand tight and walked across the red carpet with a confidence that made your skin hot. He muttered to each that called his name, his voice deep and uncaring. “No. No. Fuck you. Fuck off. Fuck no.”
A smile blooming across your face as you let him lead you into the building where everyone is walking about with drinks in their hand.
“I’m going to go get us drinks. Your usual?” He asks, waiting for your nod before heading in the direction of the bar leaving you standing there to take a look around.
You took your chance to look around at everyone around you, smiling at anyone you make eye contact with. The anxieties began rising, as every gorgeous female passed you in their perfect dresses. Was your dress cheap looking? Did you look pathetic?
You were caught up in your thoughts as Jamie approached with his date, a model that introduces herself with a hug that makes you sniff caramel, leaving you with a crater in your chest as you look at her perfection. Jamie talks about the gala, looking around at everyone as a flash makes you blink, all three of you turning to the person that just took your picture.
“The actual fuck?” Jamie scoffs, staring at him. “We were having a conversation, ye?”
“Sorry.” The man nods, moving to walk off and bumping into Nate with another apology. “Didn’t see you.”
“Hi Nate.” You smile, trying to seem calm when he walks up. “You look great.”
“Thank you! Mr. Lasso actually bought me this suit.”
“Who?” You blink, trying to see who he had been talking about. It wasn’t meant to be a snappy or snide comment, you had yet to be introduced to the new coach and the name didn’t ring a bell at first. But the second you saw the man with the mustache owning the crowd not far off you knew who Nate was talking about.
But when you turn back to Nate you see a glare set on his features, his cheeks a little red as he blatantly looks away from you. “You look great, Jamie. You as well Keeley.”
Then he walks off, bumping into you harshly as he passes which makes the blonde look at you with wide eyes as Jamie excuses himself for another drink.
“Oh, that was extremely rude of me. I shouldn’t have asked about the coach- that was-”
“What are you talking about?” She blinks, looking extremely confused. “You didn’t do anything wrong?”
“Here you are.” Roy grunts, handing you the chilled glass. “Keeley.”
“Hello Roy.” She smiles before Jamie whistles to pull her over.
“Did he just call her like she was a dog?” You ask Roy as she walks over, and he shrugs.
“He’s a wanker. Always has been and always will be.” Roy grunts out, rolling his eyes. “He doesn’t ever pass the ball. And he is a massive tool. You should hear some of the things he says to-” He begins to explain as you try to smooth out your dress before his hand shoots out to stop you. “What’s wrong?”
“Nothing.” Your answer was too quick, his eyes narrow and he catches it.
“What happened?”
“I just…. I think I upset Nate because I asked to Lasso was and I didn’t mean to and everyone here looks amazing. But I’m fine. Everything is fine.”
“Did that little fuck say something?”
“No. It’s fine Roy. Everything is fine.” You smile, leaning forward to kiss his lips which he allows before moving back and holding his hand knowing he doesn’t like pda.  “Let’s go find our seats?”
I have this dream my daughter in-law kills me for the money
She thinks I left them in the will
The family gathers 'round and reads it and then someone screams out
"She's laughing up at us from hell"
“Hello Roy, you handsome devil you.” A southern voice rings out, walking up to where you and Roy were seated together. “And what pairs so well with a handsome devil? An angel.”
“The devil is technically… well historically the devil is an angel.” You blush, immediately feeling stupid as the fun fact slips from your lips. “Well, I mean- I’m sorry that was stupid.”
“Stupid? Absolutely not. I feel ashamed that I didn’t know it.” He laughs, leaning to shake your hand. “My name is Ted, all my friends call me Ted which means you must.”
“It’s wonderful to meet you. Roy was telling me about all the new techniques at your practices.” You smile, making your boyfriend shake his head.
“I said nothing good.” Roy huffs.
“He said everything good.” You smile which makes Ted smile back.
“You both look fantastic. Have a drink on me, since it’s an open bar.” Ted jokes, moving to walk away as Roy places his hand on your lower back.
“Why the fuck would you tell him that I said good things?” He huffs and your stomach drops.
“I’m sorry. It was just teasing and you do always say great things about him so-”
“Take it easy. You are fine.” He shakes his head. “Are you okay?”
You hadn’t noticed but your fists had clenched and your nails were digging into your skin, his own fingers were quick to make you release the hold and rub his thumb over the crescent marks left on your skin before bringing your hand up to kiss your palm.
“I thought you hated pda.” You whisper, leaning so your foreheads were pressed together as he pretended to roll his eyes.
“Fuck it. I have a gorgeous date and I deserve to kiss her in public.”
“Are you sure? It’s a big move for you.”
“Have you seen yourself? Prettier than the goddess aphrodite.” He smiles and your eyes widen.
“How. Dare. You! What have you done? I’m going to have to marry my dad now. Roy, how could you have done this to me?” You laugh, shaking your head. “I also cannot believe you remember that from almost a year ago.”
“Of course I remember.” He blinks. “That was the first conversation I had with the love of my life. Who would forget that?”
“Oh knock it off.” You mumble, shaking your head.
“Knock it off? Knock what off?” He snaps. “Do you realize how fucking lucky I was that day? The day you looked at me? My life was made. The second best day of my life.”
“Second?”
“Second. My niece’s birth is the first.”
“I’m fucking honored.” You laugh, smiling from ear to ear.
“Did you just cuss?”
“I did. I’m sorry. My mother would kill me.” You blush.
“Can I be honest with you for a second?”
“When are you not?”
“Fuck your mother.” He blurts, which makes your eyes widen. “I hate her. I think she is miserable and you are far fucking prettier than aphrodite and you don’t have to worry about the goddess making you marry your dad because I will be marrying you. No goddess or god could keep me from you.”
“Oh yeah?”
“You’re stuck with me. And I need you to stop being to fucking mean to yourself. You hear me?” He asks seriously. “Because that’s the love of my life you are talking about.”
“I can try.”
“Good. Now lets get another round and wait this fucking gala out. Then lets go get actual food because I know you skipped lunch.”
“Sounds like a plan.” You smile before a flash blinds you once more, making you both whirl to the man with the camera.
“You fucker-” Roy begins to stand as he dashes off.
It's me, hi, I'm the problem, it's me
It's me, hi, I'm the problem, it's me
It's me, hi, everybody agrees, everybody agrees
You both end up at a late night potato stand, sitting on one of their benches as you both laugh at the memory of the auction that had taken place.
“A fucking grandma bid on me. You know how embarrassing that was?”
“Hey! I bid on you too!” You laugh, body shaking from laughing so hard. “And Keeley!”
“Keeley was pissing that little wanker off.” He huffs, rubbing your thigh gently as you keep his blazer wrapped around you. “Thank you for coming with me tonight.”
“Thank you for bringing me. I am sorry I upset Nate-”
“Stop saying sorry. You have nothing to be sorry for.” He mumbles, leaning to dig his spoon into your baked potato and take a big mouthful of it. “Fuck. That is good.”
“You say that about anything I get! You always do this!” You laugh, pretending to pull the potato away.
“You always choose better!”
It's me, hi (hi), I'm the problem, it's me (I'm the problem, it's me)
At tea (tea) time (time), everybody agrees (everybody agrees)
I'll stare directly at the sun but never in the mirror
It must be exhausting always rooting for the anti-hero
“Fuck!” You wake up to the sound of Roy yelling from the kitchen, rushing to wrap yourself in the sheet left on the bed from last night as your feet pad across the floor to find where he is at.
You find him sitting on the couch with a cup of coffee, glaring at his laptop, until he sees you coming out of the bedroom in just a sheet.
“Fuck.” Unlike his last curse this one is said with a lusty tone, setting the coffee down as you come closer to the couch and move to sit by him.
“What’s got you so mad, handsome?”
“They posted a picture of me and they said I’m retired. What fucks.”
“Is it a bad idea? To be retired?” You ask, moving to straddle him before he can pull an attitude. “You would have more time with me. More time to hang out and cuddle and sleep and…. You can finish the rest.”
“.....Fuck.”

Rumination
Ruminate
(v.) To think about [something] deeply
After Edward left her, Bella Swan fell apart. Desperate to try and save his eldest daughter, Charlie brings his youngest daughter to Forks to see if she can bring her sister out of her depression.
Now, y/n must try to help her sister find her way back to the light while also trying to navigate her Junior year of high school in the odd town of Forks.
Chapter Six: Hurt
Now Playing: Don’t Hurt Yourself by Beyoncé, feat. Jack White
Warnings: arguing, cursing, allusions to potentially controlling behavior?? Idk how to word it but Paul’s basically being an ass for like 90% of this sorry (he’ll get better I promise guys), miscommunication bc Paul’s emotionally constipated, Sam’s tired of his bs, reader’s tired of his bs but also on some bs 👍
Days passed. I didn’t see Paul, I hardly saw the others. Jacob was too busy catering to Bella, Embry was caring for Quil after his change, and Jared seemed afraid of getting his head ripped off anytime he even looked at me.
Emily and Sam treated me normally enough. The “enough” part comes into play when they would give me odd little looks when they thought I wasn’t looking.
Whatever. If they wanted to be weird, fine.
Roy’s was slower than it’s ever been, but Max always kept me company. He had stopped asking what was wrong, and I never brought it up. I almost felt like Bella when anything about the Cullens was mentioned. Except, unlike my sister, I didn’t break down into tears or get nauseous. I only felt angry.
Against his will, Paul had come to pick me up to take me back to Emily’s. Spitefully, I had given Max a long, lingering hug.
I knew the hug itself would piss Paul off, but what would really do it was the fact that I would also smell like Max’s cologne.
I ignore Paul as I walk to my truck, ignore him as he climbs in the bed of the truck instead of the cab, and ignore him as I start to drive.
The drive to Emily’s goes by excruciatingly slow. I’m unwilling to admit, even to myself, why that is.
I turn the truck off and go inside, not waiting for Paul. I hear that god-awful sound of his entire body popping into another shape, and he leaves for patrol.
I go into the house, slipping through the dinnertime rush in the kitchen and going to shower. The hot water feels good against my skin, and I had long since moved most of my things over here. Sam and Emily were happy enough to have me here, and I liked being in the house well enough after everything with Paul happened.
I slip on my pajamas and walk quietly to the kitchen to pick at leftovers. A plate had already been set out for me, to my pleasure, and I assumed Emily had done it. I eat quickly at the kitchen stove, eager to sleep. It had been a long day, and I just wanted it to be over with so I could start the weekend.
---
I woke up early to help Emily make food in the kitchen. Bella was still asleep, and the house was quiet except for the radio playing softly in the corner.
I caught my reflection in the mirror. My face was lined from sleep, the sheets creasing my cheeks and neck. My eyes were crusty from being asleep, my mouth dry and my lips slightly cracked. I sighed.
Wordlessly, I started helping Emily make eggs. She smiled at me as she began to focus on the biscuits and muffins. Making food was always quicker with another set of hands, especially when it was for boys who could out eat an army.
When we were done, I set out a plate for Bella and one for myself, putting them in the microwave to hide.
---
“You have until June, Paul.” Sam said slowly, “Then you tell her, or I do it for you.”
“You were the one that kept me from telling her in the beginning, but all of a sudden you give a shit?” Paul scoffed, anger bubbling in his chest.
Sam sighed, “That was a mistake on my part, I’ll admit it. But now your mess is interfering with the rest of us trying to go about our lives and trying to keep the Swan family safe.”
Paul stood suddenly, storming out of the house and slamming the door behind him. He didn’t need this shit right now.
Sam closed his eyes, a weary sigh exhaled from his lips. Emily put her hand on his shoulder, comforting him.
When Paul left in a rage, Jacob followed. He had been sitting outside, waiting with the rest of his brothers to be let back in.
Had he been eavesdropping? Sure, but so was everyone else, so it cancels out. Besides, it was for the benefit of the whole pack, so it’s not such a bad thing.
Jacob quickly transformed, following Paul to wherever he was going.
---
I woke up late today.
I suppose it’s not a surprise, since any time I was asleep, it was restless. I didn’t remember my dreams, but Bella said I murmured a lot in my sleep because of them.
Jacob and Paul weren’t at the house when I woke up, and Emily said that they had left the night before after Bella and I had gone to bed.
Paul’s probably only being moody. Jacob’s who I was concerned about. But whatever. They were grown enough to make their own choices and grown enough to handle themselves.
I focused most of my energy on helping Quil adjust. He was scared about all the changes, and he didn’t know what to say to his mom. He didn’t want to tell her because he didn’t want her to be put in danger because of it, and he didn’t want to risk her not believing him
---
Jacob and Paul didn’t come back until dinner time. Bella gave them both the plates she had saved for them as I washed the dishes.
“Paul, why don’t you help y/n put the dishes up while the rest of us clean up in here?” Jacob suggested, and I slid my eyes towards him, pinning him with a flat stare. He cleared his throat, “Uh, or maybe not.”
Paul rolled his eyes, getting up to come to the kitchen. He reached for the dish in my hand, but I pulled it away from him.
“Quit being childish, Y/n.” He grunted, reaching again for the plate. I rolled my eyes, setting it on the drying rack instead. A muscle in his jaw twitched, but he didn’t say anything.
I didn’t speak to him as I washed the dishes, and he kept his distance. The silence between us was tense, and I wouldn’t be the one to break it.
---
“Tell your boyfriend to stop bathing in that god awful cologne.” Paul sneered, his arms crossed as he leaned against my truck.
“If you’re so bothered by it, stop picking me up,” I countered, exhausted from the day and not in the mood for his bullshit.
“How about you stop rubbing on him to make a point?” He accused, and I shot him a dirty look as I pulled out of the school parking lot.
“What, I can’t hug my friends now, Paul?” I demanded, “First you try control who I’m friends with, now you’re trying to control what I do with my friends?”
“I’m trying to tell you not to do shit you know will piss people off!” He snarled, “You know damn well how your little stunt is going to end if that vampire bitch smells you on that boy, but you don’t care because you’re to busy trying to stick it to me, right?”
“You think too highly of yourself, asshole,” I taunted, “Besides, Victoria’s after my sister only, what does she care what I do?”
“So fucking difficult, all the time,” he muttered angrily, “I can’t believe this shit.”
“Boo fucking hoo.” I snapped, cutting the engine off and marching inside the house. Noticing the tension between us when we walked in, Sam sighed.
Embry stared for a little too long and Paul smacked the back of his head. Quil and Jared were quick to mind their own business after that.
The rest of the day was spent helping Emily cook, like usual. She had tasked me with getting some more ingredients for the soup, and I went to go get my shoes.
Paul looked up as I put on my boots, asking, “Where are you going?”
I flicked my eyes over to him, “The store for Emily. Why, should I have asked your permission first?”
Before he could respond, Sam butted in.
“Take Paul with you. The rest of us have chores, and I don’t want you to go alone, just in case.” He said, pointedly busying himself with his cleaning so he didn’t have to look at me.
“Fine.” I conceded to avoid conflict, and I slid my eyes back to Paul, “Put a shirt on. They won’t let you in without one.”
He rolled his eyes and snatched a shirt from Quil, who was folding laundry. He quickly put it on, holding his arms out and staring at me. Happy?
I wordlessly turned and went to the car.
---
The drive to the grocery store is done in silence, save for the pop music blaring quietly from the radio. He moves to turn it down. I turn it back up.
We go in and I peruse around, looking for the potatoes and corn. Paul skulks behind me, his presence alone warding off anyone who would look our way for too long.
When I find it, the corn I need is on the top shelf. I purse my lips, debating if asking Paul for help would really be worth it.
I turn to him, “I need the corn on the top shelf.”
He looks at me flatly, “Think you’re missing a word.”
With gritted teeth, I force out, “Please.”
Triumphant, he reaches up and gets the corn for me and puts it in the basket around my arm. I continue in search of the potatoes, finding them easily enough and going to check out.
I move to grab my purse to pay the cashier, but Paul reaches around me and hands a twenty to the woman, who takes it quickly and counts out our change.
---
“So,” Charlie starts, poking at the salad Bella was making him eat, “What’s the deal between you and that Paul fella, Y/n?”
I stare at my plate for a moment before looking my father in the eye, “Nothing, Dad. Why?”
“Just because you and him seem bit… tense.” He glances at Bella, and I giver her a dirty look. Traitor.
“I didn’t tell him anything about your issues with Paul!” She defends, “Jake did that on his own!”
“That furry little freak, I’m never saving him food again,” I mutter, pushing around the mashed potatoes on my plate.
“Jake’s just looking out for you, Y/n,” Charlie reasoned, “He told me that you were sore with the boy because he overstepped his boundaries because he didn’t like that Maxwell kid.”
“Dad, do we really have to talk about this?” I sigh, and he nods.
“I learned my lesson about not talking about things after that Edward boy took his toll on your sister,” he said firmly, “So we’re having family meetings about— boy troubles.”
I only stay serious u til I make eye contact with Bella, who’s unable to stop herself from letting out an involuntary snicker of laughter. The two of us cackle at Charlie, and he sighs.
“Hardy-har, you two, but I’m serious,” Charlie says, “So. Who wants to go first; Bella about Jacob, or Y/n about Paul?”
Bella coughs, “What’s there to say about Jake and I? We’re only friends and—”
“I might be your old man, but I’m not so old that I don’t know about teenage love, Bella.” Charlie says, his eyebrow raised at her. I smirk as she flounders for an answer.
“Well, Jake and I just spend a lot of time together because we’re good buddies and—”
“Does he know that?” I say slyly, glancing innocently at her.
“Does Paul know he doesn’t have to be jealous of Maxwell?” Bella counters, and I scowl.
“Paul’s not jealous, he’s just an ass because he’s not getting his way.” I inform her, and she rolls her eyes.
Charlie, trying to follow, says, “Now hold on, since when was I supposed to be keeping an eye on Maxwell?”
Bella snickers and I put my head in my hands, “You don’t! Good lord, Max is just a friend!”
“Then what’s got Paul bent out of shape?” He asked, and I wanted to scream.
“Look what you’ve done now,” I groan, smacking Bella across the shoulder, “Dad, Paul’s just being pigheaded, I don’t know what’s wrong with him, and I don’t really care since he won’t tell me.”
---
“Paul,” Sam started over lunch.
“I’m getting around to it!” Paul protested grumpily, picking at his food. Quil opened his mouth to ask, but Embry stopped him with a sharp shake of his head.
“Paul,” Sam started again, “You need to talk to her.”
“And what? Get yelled at?” He shot back, a sneer on his face.
Sam sighed deeply, about to respond when Emily put her hand on his shoulder to stop him.
“Paul,” Emily said gently, “You need to explain your behavior. Without knowing why you’ve been so… agitated, Y/n thinks you’re just being an ass. You need to apologize to her and explain everything. It will help.”
“Look, I know that, okay?” Paul said, frustrated as he pushed his plate away from himself, “I’m well aware of what I need to do. But we all know what happens when Y/n and I are in the same room for more than a few minutes, especially when I try to do anything for her.”
“Yes, which is exactly why you need to explain everything and—” Emily started, stopping when Paul stood up and started to march out.
“Look, I appreciate the advice, but you aren’t telling me anything new, so both of you cut the shit.” With that, Paul slammed the door behind him and ran off into the woods.
After a long silence, Quil spoke up.
“…Can I have the rest of his food, since he’s not going to eat it?”
---
Ok short chapter today! What do we think??

Ok listen all of the batkids love bluey
It starts with Jason who is babysitting Lian one night. She insists that they watch bluey together and Jason cannot say no to her so they watch it. At first he’s like yeah this is pretty good and kinda funny but by the end he has already put her to bed and he’s still watching it when Roy gets back. Roy laughs but says that he likes to watch it too.
It starts becoming an after patrol treat for Jason, especially after a particularly rough night or when his vision starts getting uncomfortably green. He switches on a few eps until he can think clearly again and hum along to opening theme.
So he really thinks nothing of it when he turns it on after a long patrol. He’s so on autopilot that he doesn’t even register that it’s not something he would normally put on around Dick. For his credit, Dick doesn’t really say anything, though he definitely gives Jason a weird look. Jason ignores it. Dick is hooked immediately and leaves the next morning singing the theme on his way out.
Cass becomes a bluey fan similar to dick, although it’s a bit more purposeful. She’s having a bad day, having trouble seeing any good in herself. She goes to Jason’s apartment because she doesn’t want to be alone and she knows he won’t make a big deal of anything. Jason takes on look at his sister and plops her down on the couch with a blanket and an episode of bluey while he goes off to make them both a hot chocolate. Cass goes to bed smiling.
From there Cass infects Steph because she likes to have it on as background noise (Steph loves Dance Mode and Bus). Dick didn’t even mean to get Tim hooked. Tim had broken into his apartment the night before and was sitting at his coffee table with several files and his laptop open. Dick grumbled a good morning before putting an episode of bluey on before going to make both of them breakfast. Tim didn’t realize he had been actively watching until Dick set a plate of toast and eggs in front of him.
Duke accepted it easily. Cass had it on the morning after patrol and he had started just by walking by, then the lean against the back of the sofa, to sitting down, to having his feet kicked up into his sisters lap as they watched together. (They were later joined by Steph and Tom who easily squeezed onto the couch with them)
Damian was the only one to put up any resistance against watching bluey, mostly because he already despises being seen as a kid. He thinks it’s ridiculous that his siblings are taken in so easily by a simple children’s cartoon. Steph sat on him to force him to watch Squash and he now only watches it when his other siblings have it on (and if you saw him in his room after patrol watching it on an iPad under his covers no you didn’t).

Playing Pretend (Part 8)
Roy is a bit distracted during the wedding ceremony.
Roy Kent x Reader

Series Masterlist
Tumblr media
Roy had been hoping to see you just once more before the ceremony. Partly to give you reassurance that he’d be right there, eyes on you, but, more selfishly, he wanted a glimpse of you in your bridesmaid dress so he wouldn’t gawk at you as you walked down the aisle.
Unfortunately, your sister kept you busy, so there was no chance for that. Instead, he was only able to send you a quick text as he found his seat a couple rows behind your parents, reminding you that he’d be your anchor when you needed one and jokingly wishing you luck walking in a straight line after the night before.
His heart skipped a beat when you sent him a simple Thanks Roy. You’re the very best ❤️
He felt like a fucking teenager, the way he got so excited over a fucking heart emoji. But he couldn’t help it; it was you. Everything you did made him feel like a stupid, lovesick boy: the way you smiled at him, those moments when you were physically affectionate, your ability to make him laugh with stupid memes sent in the middle of the day just because it made you think of him, the fact that you always remembered little details like his metal allergy.
Roy wondered what it was like for you watching him date. He knew what it was like for him to watch you. He fucking hated it. For those three years you were with Jim, Roy felt so fucking tortured. Watching you smile at Jim, embrace Jim, kiss Jim, listening to you gush about Jim, confide in Roy and his sister that you were going to marry Jim. It had all been too much. For a brief while, Roy had considered taking a break from your friendship to force himself to get over you; he had lasted all of two days before sending you a text about the book he was reading because he knew you’d like it too.
As the garden filled with poshly dressed people, Roy thought back on those rare occasions he’d brought women around you. You were always quieter in those instances, not hugging Roy as tight, not engaging his date in any sort of conversation if you could help it. It wasn’t as if you were anti-social; whenever he brought around Jamie or another teammate, you were bubbly and friendly, leaving them with a lovely impression and questioning Roy about why he hadn’t asked you out. It was only his dates you were icy to. When one woman asked him about your coldness, Roy had shrugged it off, assuming you weren’t feeling well; that particular date had rolled her eyes and called Roy thick.
He knew. Somewhere in the back of his head he knew, because he’d seen it the night before when Jim’s cousin simply glanced at him. You were jealous. Jealous of the models and the influencers and the actresses. Even a little jealous of Keeley Jones, even though you’d met her on multiple occasions and liked her. Ever since you were thirteen and heard Roy talk about his first girlfriend, you were painfully, white-hot, devastatingly jealous of every single girl and woman who had Roy Kent’s attention.
No, Roy scolded himself, ignoring the sound of music starting. You couldn’t be jealous. Because being jealous meant…
Fuck.
The model whose name he’d forgotten now was right. He really was thick. When he was at the youth academy, you used to call and write him all the time, even more than his own family did. You always had a smile for him, always a hug that lasted just a moment too long, always found an excuse to pass him and press yourself close to him. At matches, it was your voice he could hear over the roar of the crowd, shrieking his name with excitement and pride. After he’d truly busted his knee, you were at his door with a bottle of whiskey and not a word of pity, knowing he’d be getting that from the rest of the world. Every glance across the room, every text sent for no reason other than to say hello, every movie night with your leg pressed against his, every moment of teasing from your family this weekend, all of it added up to one stupidly obvious truth:
You were probably just as in love with him as he was with you.
Roy didn’t get much time to sit with this newfound revelation before the procession began. He hadn’t even noticed Jim take his place beside the minister, nor did he care to look in that direction. Instead, his eyes anxiously awaited the sight of you.
He exchanged knowing glances with Paul as he and Jen marched down the aisle; it was as if your brother-in-law could see the clarity Roy finally felt. Then came that bridesmaid that couldn’t keep her eyes off Roy, but he didn’t pay her any mind. Not when he finally saw you coming down the aisle.
You were gorgeous. Of course you were. You were always gorgeous. Your gaze immediately found Roy and your smile widened. For someone about to watch her sister marry her ex, you looked relaxed, glowing even. And somehow, Roy knew it was because of him.
As everyone stood for Lauren’s entrance, Roy couldn’t resist glancing back at you. As he had hoped, you were already looking right at him.
~
The ceremony went off without a hitch, much to everyone’s relief. There was no telling what your sister would do if something had been amiss. Roy began to follow the crowd towards the reception, wondering if he could manage to find some secluded corner to have a drink while he waited for you to come back from taking bridal party photos; he was rarely interested in schmoozing and talking about his work with strangers, even more so now that he was reflecting on his painfully obvious realization.
“Roy.”
He didn’t even have to turn to know it was your hand on his arm.
You smiled up at him, radiant, almost goddess-like in your bridesmaid dress and flower crown. He had to admit, despite Lauren’s Lauren-ness, he definitely liked her choice in bridesmaid outfits.
“I was just heading to the reception,” he explained. “Figured you had pictures and shit.”
You nodded, wringing your hands. “Yeah. I just… wanted to say thank you.” You took a step closer to him. “For being there today. Lauren wasn’t too happy that she saw you making that face at me but…” You shrugged with a shy chuckle. “It helped.” Without another word, you threw your arms around his neck and pulled him into a tight hug. “You’re amazing,” you whispered before letting go. Your hands lingered on his arms as you looked up at him.
His hands froze on your waist as he looked down at you, every instinct in his head begging him to say something.
But not yet. Not now. Not right before you were supposed to be taking photos with your family. Because what if he was totally and completely wrong? The awkwardness on your face would be documented for all eternity.
Even worse, what if he was right? He’d finally admit his feelings, you’d admit yours, and then he’d have to let you go be all smiles next to fucking Jim. Fuck no. Once Roy told you how he felt, he didn’t want to spend even one second away from you.
“Roy?”
Your timid voice brought him out of his thoughts. “Go smile pretty for the camera,” he teased, kissing your forehead. “Just do your fucking best not to outshine the bride. Although-” His eyes trailed up and down your figure before returning to your face. “-that might be fucking impossible.”
The blush that appeared on your face made him feel almost proud. “I’ll do my best,” you laughed, giving his biceps a squeeze. “Photos shouldn’t take too long, so I should be back soon.”
“I’ll have a strong drink waiting for you,” Roy promised.
“And a dance?” You raised your eyebrows, knowing Roy was never much for dancing.
Roy shrugged and pressed another kiss to your forehead. “As many dances as you fucking want.”

Do you have any hot takes or unpopular opinions involving the Arrowfam?
Thank You 😁
Oh boy here goes. My hottest take is that Dinah should not be considered the mother of the Arrowfam.
Look, okay, I get it. Family dynamics are really cute, and the Arrowfam is the superhero family. And since Ollie's the dad of the family, it makes sense reasonably that that would make Dinah the mum.
But the thing is, I really don't think she is. Ages ago I made a post about how I want an Arrowsiblings (Roy Connor + Mia) hug in the current run and I got a few notes on that post saying that they should also hug their mum and that's what really started this train of thought so I'm gonna go from that.
So obviously the easiest to dispute is Connor. Connor already has a mum, and it's a bit of a concerning trend where mixed race children of heroes have their birth mothers erased and replaced with their dad's significant other in fandom (see: the posts about Selina being Damian's mum). And the erasure of Moonday in Connor's life is something that happens quite often (when Ollie and Dinah had a kid named Connor in Injustice...) so just. Don't do it. Dinah isn't Connor's mum, he already has a mum.
Then there's Roy. Roy's definitely someone I see a lot of posts about him being "Dinah's son", and while I do enjoy the mama's boy jokes I wouldn't necessarily say their relationship is mother/son. Maternal? Yeah. But I feel like trying to apply a traditional family dynamic to their relationship just feels counterproductive to me. They only really met when Roy was in his early adulthood/late teens (I know Roy's age is ambiguous in Snowbirds but for the sake of arguing I usually put him around 18), and having someone fill the role of "mother" in his life was never particularly important to him.
Tumblr media
Obviously it's not explicitly stated in this dialogue, but I've always read into it as an undertone that while Roy wanted someone (Ollie) to fill the role of "father" in his life, he never felt that same need for a mother. Their relationship is very complex, it's one based in a lot of love and trust and there are absolutely maternal aspects to it, but I wouldn't call it mother/son.
And then there's Mia. Mia's relationship with Dinah is definitely the most mother/child of the three, with Dinah saying just as much
Tumblr media
That being said, hear me out.
I think that, like with Roy, Dinah and Mia have a very complex, layered relationship. I think that mother/daughter is the easiest way to quantify it, but that's just rounding up to the closest approximation. I think their relationship is more similar to Dinah's relationship with Sin- a sister relationship with maternal elements, and I don't think Mia considers Dinah a mother, not entirely.
Obviously this is just my opinion, and it's a hot take for a reason, I don't expect the majority to agree with me. I just think that the Arrows don't need to follow nuclear family dynamics in order to be a family, and Dinah's role in their lives is more interesting and has more room for nuance when it's not labelled.
Thank you for the ask!

MASTERLIST
~~~~~~~~
You're enjoying the hottest shower you can bear and also not looking forward to going back to your poor water pressure trickle when he taps on the door.
"Why you knocking?" You laugh over the pounding water.
"Don't want to catch you doing something you don't want me to know about, " he says with a wink. You turn the shower off and step into the towel he's holding out. "Your phones been going mad, I hope you don't mind but I wanted to check it wasn't Lexie?"
"Thank you, course I don't." You take the phone and look through the notifications. "Lots from your sister, she's seen the red carpet pictures… shit, the pictures!" You keep scrolling, reaching with your other hand to hold onto his t-shirt. He takes you hand and kisses the palm. "Ah. Here we go." You hold it up to show him. A slew of messages and missed calls from Andy.
"Fuck. What a knob. Come on, I've made tea. Do you want to read them while I get angry or the other way around?"
"Ooh we can switch and both get angry."
"Can't do that, you look really hot when you're mad and we haven't got enough time for that."
"Uhh you need talk? Jamie asked me last night if permanent concussion was a thing from all the times you've headbutted him." He holds his hands up, backing out the door.
"I deny everything." He leaves you to pull on some leggings and one of his Richmond t-shirts (no name on the back). You bounce down the stairs, your heels from the night before discarded at the bottom. Your dress had been left there too but Roy's obviously rescued it and draped it over the back of the sofa.
"Thank you for saving the dress." You tiptoe to kiss his cheek.
"It's only down here so I can put it on you again and then take it back off."
"Oh I'm sorry, I didn't think we had time for that this morning?" You tease. You sit up on one of the barstools and he steps between your legs, holding out a piece of toast.
"We don't, but I can look at it and dream." He sneaks a kiss before passing your breakfast and moves to stand behind you.
"I see what you're doing, feed me, put me in a good mood before I have to read these stupid messages?"
"Is it working?" He kisses your neck.
"No."
"Yes," a laugh which makes you shiver.
"Fine, yes. OK, what have we got…" You unlock the phone and open Andy’s contact page. "Ready?" He nods into your shoulder.
" Now I see why you said no to getting back together. Starting tame, also he's not wrong. I'll allow it. You look like a slag in that dress. Juicy, god I haven't heard the word slag for years!" Roy growls. " I'm guessing Lexie doesn't know. She will when she wakes up. Hmm. OK. I mean, she likes you so I think we can cope with that situation. I think she'll be OK?"
"She's a fucking great kid, smart as hell. She'll be OK." He assures you.
"There's more. He must have been pretty drunk by these I think. Bet he can't even fuck you with that dodgy knee. Uhhh, better than anyone. Ever. Ever." You feel his grin against your neck. "Don't get a big head."
"Not my head." He laughs, his beard and warm breath tickling you.
"Ohhh stop doing that. Moving on. I'm sorry you dint really look like a slut. or slag. Ah, spelling and memory are becoming an issue. Oh god, he's back to sex. No idea why, he has literally zero to brag about. can't believe that wanker gets to fuck you in that dress bitch I wud fuk u better. Wow, that one is a real mess. Its the last one, I'm guessing he passed out after that because that last bit is just wishful thinking on his part."
"Didn't he have Lexie?"
"She went to his mums I think, he was going to the West Ham match."
"Good fucking job, if I find out he's getting wasted while she's with him-" You spin the seat around to face him again,
"You'll do nothing. I'll rip his dick off with my bare hands though."
"Fuck me, you're hot when you're angry."
"I should go and get her. I just need to check where from. Are you with Jamie today?"
"Yeah, but I can see him later if you want me to come with you?"
"I'll be OK. How shall we tell her? Do you want to be there?"
"Your call babe, whatever you think she'd prefer? I'd rather not scare the shit out of her."
"I'll get her and go back to mine. You could come over when you're done later if you want? If she asks me, I won't lie to her but if she doesn't, then we can tell her together? I'll cook for you for a change."
"Perfect. Do me a favour?"
"Anything."
"Wear this when you pick her up." He traces over your heart where it turns out, his name is on the shirt embroidered above the Richmond logo.
"Baby, I would turn up in a full kit with your name on the back. Knee socks included, and football boots, just to piss him off." He kisses you fiercely,
"Now you're just talking dirty to me," he mutters.
"Yep, you love it. Come on, I bet Jamie's dying for gossip and I've got to get going." You text Andy while throwing only the important things in your bag. You're sure you've left a breadcrumb trail of your belongings around the house, but you know Roy won't mind. You head out together, the walk taking you both in the same direction for much of the journey. "Did you need to do anything about the photos?"
"Nah, no point in retracting them now and you look fit so the whole world can see them for all I care."
"Including your mum."
"Including my m-, shit, yeah I'd better call her. And your parents? Are they gonna wonder what the fucks going on?"
"I'll take Lexie round that way on our way home I think. Appease them."
"Nice one. Right, this is the Tartt's palace. See you later. Good luck, don't fucking kill him without me there to watch."
"Hmm I'll try. Don't make Jamie vom, he was trying really hard not to get too drunk last night but I don't think he was very successful."
"Story of his life. Love you." You smile up at him,
"Love you too." Jamie has the door open before Roy's even hallway through the gate, waving at you. You wave back and carry on up to Andy’s mum's house. She had been largely on your side up to now, annoyed with Andy for breaking up the family and worried that she'd see less of Lexie because of it. You'd reassured her repeatedly, taken Lexie in for tea on the way home from school, picked up bits of shopping for her and gently tried to let her know that nothing had to change between them. You weren't so sure that would be the case this morning.
~~~~~~~~

Andy’s car was on the drive so you braced yourself.
"Darling girl, come in! Tea?"
"Hi Daph, yes please. I've only had time for one this morning." So far, so good.
"Sore head?" She asked knowingly.
"Not too bad. I suspect someone else is more hungover than me."
"You're not wrong. Did he give you crap?"
"A bit. How was Lex?"
"Oh golden, we had a lovely night. She's none the wiser by the way." She leads you from your hushed conversation in the hallway to her kitchen where Lexie sat eating breakfast and Andy hovered with a coffee in hand.
"Morning poppet, did you have a good night with Gran?"
"Yeah, we watched the new Matilda film!"
"And she hasn't stopped singing the songs yet!" Lexie grinned at her Gran.
"Show me later. Did you do your homework with Dad?" She nodded through a mouthful of cereal. Andy had yet to acknowledge you so far. "Shall we pop and see Nanny and Pop-pop on the way home?" Her face lights up, Andy grunts from the corner of the room.
"Something to tell the folks eh?"
"Nothing we haven't already talked about." You quickly come up with the white lie. You don't want him to have the satisfaction that you're on clean up duty today. Lexie finishes her breakfast, puts her bowl in the sink and gives Daph a big hug.
"Thank you Gran."
"Anytime pickle. Have a lovely week at school."
"And bye to Dad?" You prompt her, finishing your tea. You manage to leave without being cornered by Andy, it's pretty clear that his mum has told him to keep his mouth shut, so the short distance to your parents is a happy one. Your dad is already in the garden checking his plants and you can see your mum in the kitchen window beaming at Lexie. "Morning!" You call out, Lexie runs straight in so you go to your dad first. "Hiya dad."
"Morning poppet," the same nickname you use for Lexie makes you smile. "Saw the paper."
"Hmm I thought you might have."
"Isn't he an almighty arsehole? I saw him on Sky Sports news, proper miserable bugger." You laugh at your dad's straight to the point question.
"I still need to talk to Lexie, so I can't really talk about it too much, but he's so lovely dad. He's a grumpy fucker but he loves me, and Lexie too. It's early days, but he makes me very happy." Your dad stays quiet, just a grunt of acknowledgement.
"I'll see about that. You'll bring him?"
"Soon, let's get the season finished first. It's a busy couple of weeks."
"Any luck on the job front?"
"Not yet."
"I hope you're not planning on just letting him support you? I didn't raise you like that."
"Dad! Course I'm not!" It stings a bit that he'd even ask that. You leave him to his tomato plants and go in to your mum.
"Morning, love. Good night?"
"Yeah, thank you." Lexie is distracted by the baking your mum has already started, "you're not going to ask if I'm in it for the money as well are you?" Your mum laughs,
"Don't be daft. Nice t-shirt," she notes. "Does the situation make you happy?" She asks cryptically for Lexie's benefit.
"Very."
"Well that's enough for me for now. More details to follow though please. And you looked beautiful, my sweetheart."
"Thank you."
"He's very handsome. The only reason I'd put up with your dad watching Sky Sports news, really. Don't tell him I said that."
"I'm not telling either of them. Don't want him leaving me for my hot mum!" You stay long enough for Lexie the bottomless pit to have one of your mums famed apple muffins and pack up a couple to take for Roy, thankful that they can't ask too much with Lexie around. You plan to walk home via the park so text Sara who meets you with Phoebe.
"How did the parental rounds go? Roy called this morning, said you'd have to deal with Andy's mum as well?"
"The mums are fine, I think. Turns out he's got a good fanbase in older women."
"Oh that'll be his yoga women theory rumbled then. So confident they have no idea who he is! Like their husbands aren't all glued to weekend football."
"My dad asked if I was a golddigger."
"Ouch, rude!"
"Just making sure I'm not throwing my career away."
"What career?" She sniggers.
"Oi, cheek!"
"You looked so great together last night. The pictures were amazing."
"It didn't even cross my mind that they'd get attention like that. I wasn't expecting damage control this morning, or to have to tell those two so soon." You look over at where the girls are playing.
"Phebs hasn't mentioned it yet, but it won't take long. You haven't got to see the playground parents tomorrow have you? That'll be fun, they love a bit of extracurricular shagging!"
"No, she's at breakfast club thankfully! I'm going to tell her this afternoon."
"Good idea, gotta do it before anyone else can." You say goodbye with plans to watch the following week's Man City game together with the girls and to catch up in the week at school.

~~~~~~~~
You're considering tackling the mountain of washing and more job applications when the front door knocks. Lexie, who's been quiet all morning, jumps up to open it. You can just about see the front door from the kitchen, so the first thing you see is Roy handing Lexie a bunch of pink tulips.
"For me?" She squeaks, "really?"
"Is that OK?"
"Only mum has ever brought me flowers before! Mum! Roy brought me flowers!" She rushes in to show you, shaking the bunch in her little fist.
"Oh honey, they're beautiful! Shall I help you put them in water?"
"Can you do it? I'm making friendship bracelets."
"'Scuse me?"
"Pleaseee?"
"That's better, yes, I can do that for you." She puts the flowers on the table and runs back to the living room, high fiving Roy on the way past. "Someone is on the charm offensive."
"Oh big time," he pulled another bunch from behind his back, peonies.
"How did you know?"
"Dunno what you're talking about." He checked the door before kissing you lightly, you cock your head to one side, "alright yeah, Lexie told me last week when you were out shopping with Sar."
"I knew you were a softy really."
"Only for you, don't get destroying my fucking tough man image."
"I wouldn't dream of it. I like that side too. Did you make Jamie vomit?"
"Unfortunately no. Did you kill anyone?"
"Unfortunately no. Bad mornings all round." He hasn't moved from your side yet and keeps looking to the door. "I think you're safe. She's making Richmond coloured bracelets for the match, we're watching with your mum and sister."
"So I've heard, means I'd better tell my mum about you then." At the knowledge that you shouldn't be interrupted for a few moments, he takes the opportunity to crowd you against the counter and really kiss you. You tilt your head to give you both better access and he sweeps his tongue over your bottom lip before biting it. The small gesture sends a wave of pleasure through your body and your hands go to the hem of his t-shirt of their own accord. You slide them just underneath enough to feel the warm skin on his stomach. The lightest scratch of your nails so close to the waistband of his jeans makes him growl into the kiss. "I've got to stop," he groans, pulling away from you. You can't help the desperate, needy moan at the loss of contact, and the look he gives you from that sound alone is enough to leave you trembling. You take a second to get your breath back and go back to sorting out the flowers. "Has she asked?" He questions once it feels safe enough to talk again.
"Not yet. I'm going to go and talk to her, you're welcome to come with me?" He squeezes your hand reassuringly but makes sure to let it go once you're in the living room. "Hey, Lex? I need to tell you some that you might end up hearing about from someone else, I wanted to be able to tell you first though?" She sits up and starts measuring your wrist for a friendship bracelet.
"Is it about Roy?"
"Uhh yeah, how did you know?" She shrugs,
"He's here. And he brought flowers." You nod,
"Right, of course. Yeah, it's about Roy. He asked me out to a fancy party last night. You might see some pictures of us-"
"Have you got them, can I see now?"
"Sure, I just need to get my phone." You're about to stand when Roy passes you his phone instead, and you see the lockscreen is one of the pictures from the night before. You hold it out to her,
"You guys look so cute." Roy grunts at being called 'cute', "It's true!" She says, taking up his wrist to measure him for a bracelet. "So he's like, your boyfriend?" You steal a quick look at him, his eyebrows raise in anticipation of your answer.
"Yeah. Is that ok?" Lexie shrugs,
"Sure, you're cooler than dad's new girlfriend but they broke up already. And now I get to meet footballers and hang out with Phoebe even more. She said we could be cousins and I told her I didn't have any so she said we should definitely do that. Can we?"
"Let's ummm… cousins is a very big step for you both. You really need to make sure you're ready so just slow down a bit there." Roy is sniggering at the big deal you've made cousins out to be, but Lexie is having none of it.
"Mum, I think we'd be OK. We're nearly 9. We're not babies. I think you should just be brave and let us do it."
"Thanks for that input bunny, I'll take the cousins thing super seriously, ok?" She accepts your suggestion and thankfully drops the conversation. In the safety of the kitchen, you lean into him and let his arms wrap around you. "That was so scary. Why are 8 year olds so fucking terrifying?!"
"You were the shit, I fucking loved that." He laughs, his chest rumbling against yours. You stand together until Roy's phone rings and disturbs you. "It's Phoebe. Alright love?" He asks her. You can hear the squeal through the phone but can't make out what she's actually saying. You move away from Roy and give him a big thumbs up and a: you got this ! He doesn't look convinced, despite you only just telling him how scary it was. You can only hear his side of the call. "Nan saw the pictures? Yeah it was a fucking great dress. Yeah alright, I owe you. Worth it. No, this doesn't mean you're cousins now. You can be cousins when I tell you so. Cos it'll be up to me! Phoebe, put nan on the phone. Mum? Yeah she's OK. I'll come and see you tomorrow. I will, love you." He hangs up and you wait. "Phoebe is suddenly obsessed with cousins and mum wanted to check you were ok." You smile,
"I think that went well then. All the mums are on board, all the kids, I'm claiming the win."
You cooked dinner, as promised and let Lexie watch a film with Roy afterwards while you packed her school bag and your work things. He left at her bedtime, leaving you with a kiss at the door.
"Maybe Roy could have a sleepover next time, mum," she said halfway to sleep, "but you can't steal all the covers or he'll get cold."
"Thanks poppet, I'll make sure I don't steal the covers."
Note
jamie gets the biggest oldest grumpiest rescue cat that has possibly ever graced the face of planet earth. three weeks later, roy ends up with a tiny, scrappy little shit of a kitten who keeps showing up at his front door and begging for scraps.
Oh no. My hand slipped.
The way Roy saw it he had two choices. He could have a long, difficult, tear-filled conversation with Phoebe about how some people were pieces of shit who never deserved to own a pet in the first place, or he could get the damn kitten into the house before the snowstorm rolled in.
"She had a collar," Roy defended himself for what must be the tenth time since he called Jamie for help. "I assumed she had a home."
"But she's so tiny," Jamie repeated for the millionth time since he'd arrived. "I don't think they're supposed to be out when they're this tiny."
Phoebe braced her mittened hands against Roy's shoulders. "Jamie, can you reach her yet? I'll crawl under there if you can't reach her."
"Absolutely not," said Roy. "I can pull him out if he gets stuck. If you get stuck, I'll have you and a cat to pry out."
Jamie, to his credit, had wasted no time in rushing over to Roy's. Phoebe barely had a chance to explain the situation before the only cat owner Roy knew dropped to the icy ground. Without making a fuss about the snow or the cobwebs or the cramped space, he'd squeezed himself under Roy's patio and started in with the cooing noises.
That was thirty minutes ago and the cooing noises had long run dry. If Roy's hands were cold, Jamie's must be freezing.
Jamie's trainers dug into the snow, kicking up a thin layer as he pushed himself further into the dark. "It's alright, Phoebe. I think I can reach her if she just comes a little closer. Psspsspss."
"Try shaking the tuna can," said Roy.
"What the fuck you think I've been doing down here?"
For once Phoebe didn't tab them for the swearing. Roy wrapped his arm around her, letting her shaking body leech whatever warmth he had left.
"Ooh! Here she comes!" Jamie whisper-yelled. Then, "Phoebe love, would you mind grabbing us a towel?"
Phoebe ran inside the house faster than Roy'd ever clocked her during training. Roy waited for her braids to disappear around the corner before asking, "There something wrong?"
A beat of quiet. "Bit of the ear's torn up. Hard to tell with the fur, but it's crumpled and she's not moving right."
Guilt slipped hot into his stomach. Stupid posh neighbors. He should've called someone when he'd spotted the little beast prowling around his bushes three weeks ago. Phoebe had begged him to try to catch it, and he'd been too distracted by visions of his sister killing him if his niece came home with a kitten to wonder what something that small was doing out in the winter in the first place.
Phoebe wore him down until he agreed that they could leave some food out. Then he had to take her to the store to buy canned tuna. By the time they returned, the kitten was gone and Phoebe, pouting, insisted they leave a can outside just in case.
Since then he'd been woken up no less than three times by sharp little cries outside his window.
If each time he forced his stiff body to get out of bed, limp outside, and put out a fresh can of tuna, then that was between him and the cat.
The way Roy saw it he had two choices. Him and his dodgy knee could call for help to rescue the cat from under the porch, or Roy could hate himself forever.
He'd never actually seen the little nuisance up close until Jamie wriggled her free.
"Oh," Jamie croaked. It was a small, soft noise, completely unintentional in its hurt.
Roy's heart made the same noise.
She really was just a tiny thing, hardly bigger than Roy's hand and trying her best to curl into a ball of nothing in the crook of Jamie's arm. Even against the soiled front of his hoodie, she looked dirty.
Roy had assumed she had a home to go back to. She had a collar. Someone had cared enough to buy her a collar.
"She's freezing," Jamie said in a voice as thin as a wire. "She barely weighs anything."
"Give her here."
Phoebe returned from her quest with an armful of towels just as Roy shrugged off his puffy winter jacket. He bundled the poor thing up--calico markings, a crooked ear, and giant amber eyes that ducked into the shadows--and he had just enough time to flip the hood of his jacket against her head before Phoebe could see her ear.
"You got her!" Phoebe screeched. She barreled into Jamie's leg, keen to give the hero of her evening a hug. Jamie barely seemed to notice, all of his awareness laser-focused on the bundle in Roy's arms.
The immeasurable responsibility that curled up tight in his jacket offered up a forlorn mew.
"Let's head in," Roy said. The snow was beginning to fall.
Succession The Musical Hypothetical Casting
I’m doing this in one shot and off the top of my head, so I will be missing characters, I do also welcome suggestions.
Logan Roy: Patrick Page
Is this the obvious first choice? Yes. Is it the correct one? Also yes.
Kendall Roy: Lucas Steele
Kendall is just Anatole if he didn’t have a close relationship with his sister.
Roman Roy: Brandon Uranowitz
He played a nice neurotic freak in Falsettos, let's see him play an evil neurotic freak.
Shiv Roy: Eden Espinoza
I'll be honest, if I was genuinely casting a Succession musical as a real casting director, I would look for a more unknown performer to play Shiv, because I firmly believe that Shiv Roy should be an alto part, heavy in the lower range (like basically a tenor). Shiv's plot revolves around trying to push past her gender to be taken seriously, and I think having her being an alto who stays in her lower register would really highlight how hard she's trying to be taken seriously. That said, I would not at all be disappointed to have Eden Espinoza in the part. She's insanely talented, and I would love to see her interpretation of Shiv.
Connor Roy: Josh Groban
So there's a clip of The Opera from "Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812" where the ensemble sings "Pierre, the cuckold, sits at home", and then Pierre pops up saying "No, I am enjoying myself at home this evening" while giving a sad little thumbs up, while his wife is off banging another man? That's the energy I want for my Connor Roy.
Tom Wambsgans: Brian D'Arcy James
Is he maybe a little old for the part? Sure. But age onstage is fucky, and Brian D’Arcy James would absolutely kill it as the combination ass-kisser and ruthless bastard that is Tom Wambsgans. Also he gives Minnesota.
Greg Hirsch: George Salazar
I kinda don’t feel like I have to explain this one.
Gerri: Bernadette Peters
Icons playing icons.
Frank: Mandy Patinkin
Sunday In The Park With George reunion!
Willa Ferreyra: Samantha Pauly
I rewatched her All You Wanna Do again last night (and cried again) and when I thought about Willa, that popped into my head. (Not in the sense that I think Willa is a victim like Katherine Howard, she’s a consenting sex worker, more the fact that in the succession world, women, like Willa, are only valued for their sexuality.) Anyway, Sam Pauly also just kills every part she’s in so…
Stewy Hosseini: Tony Yazbek
He’s played Billy Flynn on Broadway, so he’s good at being a smarmy yet charming asshole (I say this with love, I love both Stewy and Billy Flynn)
Lukas Matsson: Aaron Tiveit
He’s hot but can also be scary.
Hard Cuts/ Impossible:
Edward Herrman as Karl
Would he be fun in the role? Yes. Is he dead, and therefore incapable of doing it? Also yes.
Daniel Radcliffe as Roman
Barrett Wilbert Weed as Shiv
Mandy Patinkin as Logan
in a vehicle / confessing feelings
for @amberlouigi who wanted this prompt for colin & isaac, i hope i did it justice!
Isaac has been sitting on this revelation for a while now. Getting used to it, learning how to live with this feeling in his chest so huge it threatens to swallow him whole. And now he’s going to say it, declare it, claim it. It’s fucking terrifying.
He’s not sure when it started. He was in too deep before he knew anything was happening. The timeline is all screwed up.
There were the before times, years and years full of friendship. Then there was that time between finding out Colin was gay and going to his house to apologise. The time they don’t speak about, when Isaac’s head was too full of noise and fear to make much sense of anything.
That was the night it smacked him in the face.
Sitting next to Colin on the couch asking him question after question until he was answering one of his own with too much confidence to be entirely theoretical. He didn’t know he was in it til it was too late, didn’t know it was something he could be in until he pulled Bumbercatch’s name out and then suddenly it was all he could think about.
He knew guys were, like, objectively fit. But he’d never really considered where he was in relation to that, or where he’d like to be. Turns out he’d like to be in the thick of it, right up close and personal.
They finished out the game but Isaac doesn’t remember who won. All he remembers are the different scenarios he had playing out in his head. Did he want to kiss Bumbercatch? A little, but mostly in the same way he wanted to kiss anyone hot. Just to try it, just because he could, but not in an earth shattering kind of way. So he probably wasn’t into Bumbercatch. Did that mean he wasn’t gay? Or that other one, the one like his baby sister. Bisexual. Huh. Okay. That word was only a little less scary.
But surely he’d have known. So if he wasn’t into Bumbercatch, was there someone else, someone more his type. He thought about all the girls he’d kissed, shagged, fallen in love with. Women who were fit and silly and liked a laugh, who went pint for pint with him and joined him on the dancefloor.
“‘Nother round, boyo?” Colin had asked, tapping Isaac’s empty beer bottle with his own.
Which had of course led Isaac to looking. Wondering. Thinking. Imagining. What would it feel like to kiss Colin? What would it feel like to go out clubbing and dance with him, instead of just near him? He thought about pulling Colin close, holding him tight, moving together, hands on his hips, thumbs in the waistband of his jeans.
Colin was standing in front of him, still waiting for an answer, and Isaac had to stop thinking about it.
Isaac couldn’t stop thinking about it, because Colin was standing right in front of him, his shirt riding up and Isaac could see his tummy, the trail of hair leading down to his …
“Nah, I gotta go,” Isaac said, jumping up and winding up almost chest to chest with Colin. “Another time though, yeah?”
That was nearly a year ago now.
He’s been sitting on it for A While.
But Isaac had to make sure. He had to double check his answers, be careful. He had to know he wasn’t going to say something he didn’t mean. He couldn’t lie about something like this. Not to Colin.
He couldn’t say he liked men, maybe liked his best friend more than he was supposed to, because what if he was wrong?
So Isaac made sure.
And by the time he was sure, Colin and Michael were on the rocks and he had to be the supportive best friend. He sat through conversations about their relationship, gave genuinely good advice that was totally unbiased, and then when they finally broke up, he, Bumbercatch and Jamie took Colin out to get wasted and dance it off.
Then he had to wait to make sure he wasn’t going to be Colin’s rebound guy. At which point, Roy pulled him aside and told him to pull his finger out, which was super embarrassing and he never wants to think about that particular boot room conversation ever again.
Roy in a healthy committed relationship is the worst kind of Roy to get advice from. He gets all sincere. And smiley. It’s honestly a little creepy.
But now they were here. Him and Colin in a car together for the three hours it was going to take to drive to Cardiff for Colin’s aunty’s birthday. Alone. Just like Isaac planned.
And now he thinks he might be bottling it.
Colin – in the passenger seat, because like hell was Isaac letting him drive all that way, he’d prefer it if Colin never drove again actually – is singing along to whatever Jamie T song is playing, totally oblivious to Isaac’s crisis.
Just because Isaac is very good at not talking about his feelings doesn’t mean he doesn’t want people to notice when he’s shitting bricks beside th–
“You okay in there, Isaac?” Colin asks, cutting in over Isaac’s spiralling.
“Huh?”
He reaches across and rubs his thumb up and down between Isaac’s eyebrows. “You’ve got your emotionally constipated brow furrow going on. Is everything okay?”
“Yeah bruv. ‘Course it is.”
He glances over, catches the almost reassured look on Colin’s face. He can practically hear Roy’s voice in his head: are you really going to let an opener like that go?
Fuck it.
“Um actually. There’s some stuff I’ve been wanting to tell you.” It really is so much easier like this, eyes on the road, hands on the wheel. He can say it to the road in front of them, just like he’s been practising in the mirror. “Nothing bad, I promise, yeah? I just need you to listen.”
“I can do that,” Colin says. And it’s Colin. It’s fucking Colin. He’s Isaac’s best friend. He’s been building it up in his head for so long, he kind of forgot that Colin is the easiest person in the world to talk to.
“So uh. You know how you’re gay?”
Colin splutters, trying to keep his laughter in and failing.
“Yeah, Isaac. I know how I’m gay.”
“Right. Well. Me too. Sort of. Half. I’m bisexual, or whatever.” He knew he should have rehearsed this bit longer. I’m bisexual, or whatever, real smooth. Wanker.
Colin doesn’t laugh though. For a moment, he doesn’t say anything at all, which would freak Isaac out if he wasn’t used to the way Colin goes blank when he processes new information. It’s like he’s uploading software and needs to restart. It’s cute. Fuck, he’s so cute.
“Thanks for telling me. It’s not an easy thing to say,” Colin says. He puts his hand over Isaac’s on the gearshift and squeezes.
“There’s more. Um. Yeah, I’m just going to… I’m kind of in love with you?”
Colin doesn’t go blank this time. Isaac watches out of the corner of his eye as Colin’s mouth drops open.
“Can you pull over?” he asks, and that is not exactly what Isaac wanted to hear, but he does it anyway. If Colin doesn’t want to be in the car with him anymore, Isaac sure as hell isn’t going to keep him here.
They haven’t even made it to the motorway yet, which turns out to be a blessing. Isaac pulls in behind a big white van. He reads all the information on the back of it while he waits for Colin to leave or say something, and considers calling the number and getting his mum’s conservatory renovated for her.
When Colin finally finds his words, they’re not the ones Isaac was expecting.
“Can you say that again?”
Isaac turns to look at him. He doesn’t look upset. He doesn’t look confused or freaked out or angry or any of the things that Isaac was dreading. He looks shocked. But beneath the shock there’s something a little like hope.
Isaac latches onto the hope, ties it to his own to make it double.
“I’m in love with you.”
Colin breathes in. Breathes out. “Not kind of?”
“What?”
“Before, you said ‘kind of’. You’re not kind of in love with me?” Colin asks, and he’s smiling now.
“Nah. That was a lie. I’m definitely in love with you.” It keeps getting easier every time he says it.
Colin laughs. “Cool.”
Isaac opens his mouth to say Cool back, because he’s starting to understand the need to reboot with new information, but he doesn’t get anything out before Colin launches himself across the centre console.
Kissing Colin is nothing like kissing any of the guys in packed clubs. It’s soft and sweet, the two of them smiling too much to kiss properly. Isaac’s seatbelt is cutting into the side of his neck, and Colin is talking into the kiss, but it’s still making Isaac smile dopily.
“I’m definitely in love with you too,” Colin says, words pressed into Isaac’s lips. “Like, have been for a while. Probably will be for a really long time. Hope that’s okay.”
Isaac doesn’t answer. Colin’s always been better with words anyway. He just keeps kissing him until he shuts up, and then he kisses him more.
They’re an hour late to Aunty Megan’s birthday. But they walk in holding hands and Isaac knows some things are worth the wait.
augusnippets day 23-- wiping away tears/gentle touch
Ted didn’t strictly have to come to Nelson Road the day after Richmond got relegated-- the season was over, none of the boys would even be here-- but he did it anyway.
He can't really explain, even to himself, why. He just got up this morning, had his breakfast cereal like usual, and next thing he knew his feet had carried him to the training grounds. Maybe, he supposes, it was his conversation with Rebecca last night weighing heavily on his mind-- we’re gonna win the whole fucking thing-- the true gravity of that promise, the promise to stick around for another season, sinking into his bones and making him wonder: how?
Either way, here he is, enjoying the spooky feeling of his shoes echoing through the unusually empty halls. He's used to being bombarded in the morning by now, by rowdy boys playing keepaway with someone’s extra underwear or eager second-teamers looking to kiss up to the coach. Walking through the empty halls now, he can almost hear traces of their voices, like remnants of ghosts left behind in a creaky old Victorian mansion.
He thinks he hears something, the solemn silence of his walk interrupted as he passes by the weights room, so he pauses outside the door. Yes, there definitely is someone in there-- a squeak of a machine and a muttered swear pops out right when Ted almost has himself convinced himself that he imagined it.
“Nate, buddy,” Ted says, pushing the door open. “You got promoted, remember? You don’t have to come in to clean up on the off days anymore--”
His voice cuts off mid-word when he makes eye contact with Roy Kent.
Roy is... not supposed to be here. Well, none of the boys are supposed to be here, but-- especially not Roy. Not when, last night, Roy barely managed to escape getting carried off on a stretcher. Not when his sister had been waiting for him in the parking lot to take him to the hospital to get his knee taken care of.
Said knee is now in a brace, but that doesn't seem to be stopping Roy from getting his morning reps in. He's doing tricep dips, so his legs are clumsily resting, dead weight, stretched straight out in front of him, while his arms do all the work. His head is angled up toward the sky, neck strained and stiff.
Just before he notices Ted, just before he startles and looks over, when his face is still pointed upward, Ted catches the flash of a tear tracing down his cheek.
"The fuck do you want, Lasso?" Roy's growl is thick with tears, his glare accusatory when his eyes meet Ted's.
Ted doesn't even know what to say.
He takes the moment of stunned silence to take in the rest of Roy, and even ignoring the tears, the younger man is in visibly rough shape. His hair is mussed and tangled, his clothes are dampened with sweat. From the smell of him, he hasn't showered since the game. His arms are shaking slightly, less the shiver of nerves and more the wrung-out, exhausted twitching of muscles pushed beyond their limit.
"Oh, Roy," Ted sighs. Condescending as it might sound, he can't help himself. "Buddy."
Roy doesn't react well. His grimace is like a sneer, a primate baring its teeth in the seconds before it lunges at your jugular. "Fuck off."
Ted is undeterred. "Come on." He comes to Roy's side, rests a hand on his shoulder. "Come on, I'll help you to the bench."
"No, you fucking won't." Roy jerks away from Ted like his skin is a boiling hot surface. "It's just across the fucking room, Lasso. Get off me."
Ted doesn't like it, but he allows Roy to pull himself to a standing position, suppressing the urge to jump in and help even when Roy hisses in pain as the weight lands on his bad knee. "Jesus," Roy mutters anyway, the annoyance in his voice a clear act, trying to cover up the pain radiating through him. "Mother fucking hen."
Then Roy takes the first step, and he instantly crumbles. His shoulder hits Ted's chest. Ted holds him upright.
"Fuck!" Roy says again, only this time it's less of a hiss and more of a yelp.
"Alright. Yeah. You're okay, you're okay." Ted manages to hobble Roy's weight over to the bench on the other side of the room, and Roy nearly bends in half as soon as he's sat down, his fingers clawing helplessly at his bad leg. Roy Kent is whimpering in pain-- whimpering, Ted thinks numbly. He's never heard Roy do that before.
Ted finds, almost without his knowledge, his hand rubbing circles into Roy's back. "You're okay," he mutters, trying to put conviction in his voice. "You're okay."
"I'm not," Roy says. "I can't be."
"You are."
"No, not that--" He shakes his head, lets out a frustrated growl. "Not that. I mean I can't--I'm not. I can't. I can't be done."
So that's what this is about. Of course. Of course Roy would be trying to come right back to work the next day, jump right back on the horse. He realizes, and Ted knows he realizes, that the horse is long gone, miles away. Doesn't mean he's not going to jump as far as he can, though, hoping aimlessly to catch up.
There are tears in Roy's eyes again. Ted waits for him to dash them away, but he doesn't even try. He just tips his head forward and lets them fall out.
"Roy." Ted, master of pep talks, champion of silly platitudes, chatterbox of the year, can't find anything to say. "I'm sorry, buddy. I'm so sorry."
The room is quiet, so silent it burns in Ted's ears, with nothing to interrupt it but the odd whine of frustration coming from the man bent over under him.
In a minute, or maybe an hour, Ted will call someone-- Roy's sister, or Keeley, or just somebody-- and get him properly taken care of. But for now, Ted stands by Roy's side with a hand on his back, watching him cry. Watching him mourn the death of a career. Listening to the last gasps of it drift away in a quiet, empty room full of the mundanity of exercise equipment, balloon strings floating off into the air, just out of reach of Roy's grasp. Getting further and further away with every passing moment.
Ted's mouth moves in tired, practiced phrases. "I'm sorry, Roy. I really am."
Roy's muscles keep twitching under Ted's hand.
Ngl when I see ppl shipping Jamie and Dr. O'Sullivan I think they're at least a little homophobic and very straight.
well, i disagree with a blanket accusation of homophobia, but I do think it's an opinion that holds a very ~straight appeal~, definitely, lol.
there are honestly a boat load of reasons i hate it but they boil down to:
i kind of get why people (esp. a segment of the general audience) might be attracted to it because it's soooo something (bad) shows/sitcoms would do. Like, my god is it TRITE. Predictable, formulaic...boring as all hell! Of course he's going to get with the nameless sister who has less than five minutes total of screen time, just for a little added spice and drama, sure. That's what happens in (bad) shows. But luckily for the rest of us, Ted Lasso even at its worst is not that brand of bad, lol.
it's completely baseless? Nothing wrong with a baseless ship i guess, but at the same time...literally why this one? lol. Like, Jamie and Roy's sister share one scene together in which I don't believe they even say anything to one another directly? There is no chemistry, no...anything? The entire premise for the ship seems to be Jamie telling Roy his sister is hot. Which was very clearly intended as a way for Jamie to get under Roy's skin. Nothing about the scene makes me want to see those two dating.
the big proponents of it i've seen (often, definitely not always) seem to fit into one of two categories 1) people who don't really like Jamie and/or are upset Jamie "got in the way" of their ship, and thus want him to be written into a corner that pulls him away from their preferred couple/inherently shuffles up their dynamic. they don't actually care to watch a plot between Jamie & Roy's sister, they just want Jamie firmly categorized as Taken and thus Not Interested in Roy and/or Keeley, and this is a convenient and predictable(y stupid) way to do it. lol.
OR 2) people who DO really like Jamie and in fact really like Roy & Jamie, but in a very "no homo" way, who want to see more of their dynamic and have a way to define/further explore their closeness, whilst also justifying their own enjoyment of it, that's well set apart from "they have homoerotic tension." Jamie & Roy's sister dating holds an appeal because it more explicitly puts their relationship into firm "brotherly" territory. And I unabashedly loathe that for the same reason i loathe "Roy is Jamie's father figure!" ...foremost because no really, they can just be best friends!! Even if you do not want to ship roy-jamie romantically, you do not need to slap different familial labels on them (or put them into random other pairings) to make their relationship "more." Their relationship is already "more"...they are canonically best friends!! idk if I'm explaining this in the best way but the mindset behind it often feels very rooted in ~the nuclear family is the most important relationship a person can achieve~ and thus a need to fit everyone into traditional family roles (and in some cases that PLUS blatant homophobia) and it gives me a personal ick. Ew.
If you want to see quirky jamie & phoebe antics or roy and jamie bickering, Jamie x Roy's sister getting it on is in fact not actually necessary for any of that? (and imo doesn't add anything to anyone's arc) Going back to point one...using that pairing to get there feels TO ME very boring and sitcom cartoony.
(i also obviously dislike it for my personal shippy reasons and must acknowledge my bias. 🫡 Jamie dating his best friend's sister when he clearly has a crush on said best friend is a relationship-based mental low point/cry for help i do not actually want him to go through as my fav character, LOL.)
(disclaimer: people can of course feel differently and are entitled to ship whoever they want without even needing a clear reason or explanation! that's totally valid! i want to reiterate I don't think it's inherently problematic as a ship. I just personally think it's a rotten tomato of a plot point and i'm so beyond glad the show didn't waste time entertaining it.)
we kind of know what the general public's perception of reader is, but i'm curious, what about the heroes? like, we know she at least knew jon from before, and clark went to her party, but how does she get along with the heroes (the league, young justice, titans or whatever)? is she just batman's normie daughter to them? since in the party she mentioned most people went because of their relationship to her brothers. hope this makes sense lmao love your writing!
Pretty much, yeah! Anyone who knows Bruce's secret identity just thinks about her as Bruce's normie daughter. She's more or less uninteresting to them and Bruce kinda likes to keep it that way. He's been actively discouraging people from interacting with her for years, and since she doesn't have any powers or anything, everyone's fine leaving her alone. I think she's only really talked to the people that the batfam hangs out with off the clock. So the Clark, Conner, and Jon Kent, Diana, Kori, Donna Troy, Oliver Queen, Dinah Lance, Artemis, Roy Harper, and Wally West. Clark, Diana and Oliver think she's a sweet girl, but Diana is made a bit uncomfortable by how sheltered she is. Even she knows it's a sensitive subject for Bruce though, and doesn't see her enough to make her bring it up. Jon obviously has a big ol' crush on her. Like his dad, he's most attracted to people without powers (though he has some other small crushes on other superheroes because he's a teenage boy, but they're fling material). Conner has probably spent a good amount of time teasing Tim about how hot his sister is, though no one is sure if the interest is genuine. Wally probably thinks she's cute, but doesn't talk to her much. He gets the same weird vibes Diana does about her being sheltered, but Dick is pretty sensitive about it. Jason is only just getting to spend time with her, so Roy is only operating off of the whole 'this is my annoying little sister' narrative. Artemis has noticed the same 'weirdly sheltered for a teen girl' thing but their paths don't cross enough for it to bother her. I think maybe there was a time when everyone was more interested in spending time with her, but her mother is a very sensitive subject for Bruce. Clark, Diana and Ollie did know her mom, since she knew about Bruce being Batman from the start.
Touch prompt 17 (after an argument) please and thank you!
Whatever Gets You Through the Night Succession gen fic. Roy sibs! TW: for mentions of domestic violence, drug abuse.
1996 / Connor's 33, Kendall's 18, and Roman and Shiv are twins and 14.
-
“Ow, fuck,” Roman bites, wincing dramatically as Connor rolls his eyes, offers up a half-assed watch it as he presses the balled-up washcloth to his youngest brother’s split lip. It’s mostly stopped bleeding now, the cut leaving the start of a bruise the size of their father’s signet ring just below the swell of his mouth, and the thing is, it wasn’t even hard, not really. An unballed fist, an open fingered backhand. Hell, if dad hadn’t been wearing the ring, there’d probably be nothing to clean up at all. The thought dries in ink, certain in a way that eases that hot, panicked, hollow feeling from ten minutes ago, even as he tilts Roman’s peach-fuzzed chin sideways to double check.
“A day, maybe two,” he decides, letting him go, but not quite moving to stand just yet. “I reckon you won’t even know it was there.”
“Shit, was hoping it’d scar,” Roman replies. He’s sitting cross-legged on the closed toilet seat, his eyes cast downwards to where he’s tugging the sleeves of his sweater down over curled fingers. Like this, he looks younger than fourteen, bug eyed and round faced with hands and feet he hasn’t grown into yet. Scrappy, like Kendall was at his age. Like Connor’s pretty sure he was too. “Start my supervillain era.”
It’s then that Shiv finally makes a noise – that loud sort of scoff she’s been managing since she was eight – and Connor exhales, standing up from his crouch to toss the blood-spotted washcloth into the sink.
“Please, you have Henchman Number 3 written all over you.”
“Yeah, well, you have unidentified murdered body written all over you. Probably headless and like, mangled and shit, with someone’s dick stitched to your face.”
Which - - okay.
“What the fuck is wrong with you?” Shiv asks at the same time Connor says: “Hey,” giving Roman a sharp look, and Roman just rolls his eyes, slumping back against the toilet’s tank and pulling a face at Shiv, who’s gotta pull an ugly one back, if the faint grin twitching at the corner of Rome’s mouth is anything to go by. It makes it easier somehow, for Connor to glance back at Shiv himself, and at least some of the colour is coming back to her face.
She’d come into the bathroom after them, but only by seconds, closing the door behind her before deciding to glue herself to it, and in the moment of it, it had been too much. To have been on his own this morning at his place in Medina, to tonight, trapped in the crowded kids’ bathroom at their dad’s apartment on the Upper East Side, these three kids suddenly his to deal with, loud and needy and urgent.
Not that that was a straight line exactly.
No, of course, there was plenty between it, from the private jet to dinner, to - - all of that - - but he’s not really sure how productive that would be to think about right now when his fourteen-year-old sister is staring at him like maybe he has a few answers.
And maybe he does, he thinks, hands still damp from the washcloth.
Or maybe not, he thinks, because he finds himself still looking at Shiv to not look at Kendall.
Thing is, he'd only visited her a few weeks ago – flown to Kentucky to see her compete in the US Equestrian Pony Finals, where she’d ignored him the first day before attaching herself to his side the second – but he swears she’s grown since then. Another inch in height at least, plus - - you know. She and Rome might be twins, but they’ve never looked particularly alike, and now, well. Mom always did say girls grew up faster.
“You okay?” he asks her, and Shiv glances up at him, arms crossed behind her back where she leans against the wall, and he sees it. The way her eyes dart towards the bathtub, but she’s careful not to let herself linger. Rolls her shoulders back against the wall, pushes her hips out like she would when she was still a kid, and she sniffs.
“Shouldn’t you be asking him that?”
Which - - yeah, Connor thinks, finally turning his attention to where Kendall’s sprawled in the empty bathtub, skinny as a rake, all of 18 and more blitzed on your average Thursday night than Connor was at last year’s Burning Man. He’s distracted at least for now, entranced by the ceiling light, his hair still damp from where Connor had splashed some water on his face the second he’d pulled them in here, but after a quick search for track marks (there were none that he could find, at least, although the hand-grip shaped bruise on Kendall’s arm had made him catch his breath), and deciding he wasn’t at risk of slipping into unconsciousness just yet, figured he could wait a sec.
“Don’t know how I was the one he was pissed at with the tweaker here,” Roman huffs, but there’s nothing behind it really. Embarrassment if anything, Connor thinks, because they both know Dad wasn’t actually angry at Roman anyway. The evening is like a flip book in his head: Family dinner and Kendall moony eyed and loose limbed and Sally-Anne’s pointed comments and then Kendall’s slurred insult, then their father’s consuming anger, shrinking the room, climbing the walls. A hand on Kendall’s arm, yanking so hard Connor thought he might’ve pulled it from the socket, Roman standing up saying - - something, Connor can’t remember, just remembers he was too close, whatever he said too much, so their father’s hand had gone backwards, like batting away a fly. Remembers Shiv then, staring hard at her plate, white faced and stormy eyed, and if it wasn’t for Sally-Anne suddenly leaving the room, their father quick to make chase, who the hell knows where the night might’ve gone.
“You just don’t know when to stop,” Shiv tells him, and Connor ignores them, crouching at the edge of the bathtub, grabbing the glass of water he’d poured earlier off the floor and holding it out to Kendall again. His gaze slips to the finger shaped bruises on his arm, and sometimes, in his dumber moments, he kinda thinks that’s the nut cracked. That Roman’s smacked out of the way, shoved to the side, and Kenny’s yanked closer, Kenny’s held down, but that’s not - - Dad’s not - -
Connor shakes his head, reaches for Kendall’s hand, helps him grip the glass. They’re kids, just like he was, and they just need to learn to keep quiet and do as they’re told. That’s all.
“You with us?” he asks, and Kendall blinks bleary green eyes back at him, unfocused, but then - - there’s a little something. A vague flicker of recognition, of regrounding, and Connor’s knees ache.
“Con?”
“Yeah, Kenny, I’m here.”
It makes Kendall blink, mumble something Connor can’t quite make out, but there’s a smile at his lips, so Connor takes it for a win. He rests his elbow against the cool porcelain rim of the tub, easing the glass to Kendall’s mouth.
“You gonna drink some of this for me?”
“You always do stuff like this,” Shiv continues, and from the corner of Connor’s eye, he can see her finally push off the door, starting towards Roman “Like you’re away half the year and then you come back, and start inserting yourself into things that you don’t know anything about.”
“Oh, I don’t know anything about this? About fucking - - fucking Trainspotting over here?”
Which - -
Connor frowns, even as Kendall fumbles a hand to his wrist, holds onto him as Connor helps him take a drink.
“Aren’t you a little young to be watching stuff like that?”
“We’ve seen worse,” Shiv counters. “Pretty sure Roman’s been jacking it to Clockwork Orange since last summer.”
“Yeah, but only to the regular violence, not the rapey violence, so the internet says there’s nothing to worry about.”
“I don’t like you guys messing around with that either,” Connor says, and he’d gesture to make a point, but Kendall’s really holding onto him now. Sobering up, maybe, something. Connor glances back, but y’know what? He has a point here. “The internet. You know, I’ve heard it was secretly invented by Al Gore, which means Clinton’s probably using it as a backdoor to Dad.”
“Oh my god, Connor,” Shiv groans, as Roman laughs, which chafes, and Connor half twists back towards them, annoyed because, y’know, they’re half his fuckin’ age, and he knows stuff about this, he does, but Roman and Shiv are just grinning at each other now.
“Ooo, yes, well, they’ll be getting all the super secret intel like his favourite sports ball team’s latest score as reported by literally everywhere, and pictures of like - - tits and buttholes.”
“I’m serious, you guys, it’s - - ”
Before he can finish the thought, Kendall suddenly sits up, thrusting his glass back at Connor, and okay, yeah, alright, Connor thinks, sensing the incoming mess. He drops the glass to the ground to stand and haul Kendall up as best he can. The kid’s green around the gills, is the thing, throat lurching and shoulders curling, and Connor glances sideways to Roman as he tries to move Kendall, who’s got all the grace of a reanimated corpse right now, and at least Rome’s already lurching off the toilet seat, fumbling around to help Connor pull their brother bodily out of the tub. There’s a bit of fumbling then, turning, but somehow they manage to link elbows with Kendall in the middle, their knees hitting the tiles simultaneously, just in time for Kendall to drop his head into the bath and vomit.
Behind them, he can hear Shiv gag, and Jesus, Connor’s pretty close to it himself. The splatter of bile (because apparently Kendall hasn’t eaten anything today) loud against the porcelain, and the smell something thin and acidic, diffusing in the bathroom, weaseling into towels and clothes.
“That’s good, Kenny,” Connor says, soothing in the way he used to use with his mom, which - - okay. Not something to spend too much time thinking on. He swallows, adds: “Bet you’re feeling better already, huh?”
Kendall makes a vague spluttering noise, and Roman’s face twists into something between sympathy and disgust, and Connor’s knees really aren’t what they used to be. He shifts on the tiles, feeling his pants catch in the grout line, leaving him off-balance, and he means to push a hand to Kendall’s back, half in quasi-comfort, and half to steady himself, only to discover that Roman’s hand is already there. They don’t acknowledge it, instead Connor just raises his own hand to the back of Kendall’s neck, squeezing gently at the clammy skin there, and watching as Kendall heaves out one last vomit, before he lowers his head to the rim of the bathtub.
“Here it comes,” Roman says, voice flat and hand still sprawled between Kendall’s shoulder blades. “You seen him crash before, man? It’s like watching a lizard fall off the ceiling into a trash compactor.”
“He’s done this before?”
Which is a stupid question, and they all know it. They’ve all seen him sneak off at parties, all seen him waxy skinned and red eyed in the mornings, and Connor’s more wondering when it started. He must’ve been Rome and Shiv’s age, more or less. Younger maybe, but that’s not really something he wants to think about either. Can’t quite balance that. His kid brother, always playing big.
Still, stupid question or not, Shiv and Roman play along.
“Just a couple of times,” Shiv replies, and when he glances back at her, she’s flattened her bare foot on to the back of Kendall’s, her toes curled around his heel, and it’s a weird sort of gesture, but then Kendall’s foot seems to arch to hold it there, and he thinks he’s got no leg to stand on, not really. After all, she and Kendall are the only two of the four of them who really live together right now, what with Roman at St. Andrews and Connor in Medina. The thought sticks, and Connor thinks - - next school vacation. He’ll get them out with him. He can - - something.
“By that, she means only Wednesdays through Mondays. He gives himself Tuesdays off.”
Roman’s voice is cloying, mocking, and it apparently inspires a fresh exhale. A proper, annoyed breath.
“Fuck you, bro.”
And okay, yeah, Connor can work with that.
“Oh! He’s awake!” Connor crows at the same time Roman says: “He’s aliiive!” in as disturbing a Dr. Frankenstein voice as he can manage, and between them, Kendall swipes at his mouth with the back of his hand, resting on his haunches, and their arms are still linked, so it ends up being a whole thing that - - y’know - - not to belabor the point, but Connor’s really not sure his knees are up for anymore.
“Yeah,” is all Kendall says, and it’s weird – this moment where Connor feels him start to pull his arm in, closer, before seemingly changing his mind and disentangling. Instead, Kendall drops his hands to his thighs, curling there for a second before uncurling, and he glances at Connor without actually looking at him, before suddenly turning to Roman. Like this, Connor can’t see his face, can only see the back of his head and the slope of his narrow shoulders, but he can see Roman just past him, and then Shiv too, as she moves from behind them to sit on the edge of the tub, and that’s - - not weird, it’s not. Him and Kendall looking at Roman and Shiv, Roman and Shiv looking at - -
Well.
Not them.
Kendall.
Always to Kendall first.
It’s out of the corner of his eye that Connor sees Kendall raise an arm, his hand coming up to the corner of Roman’s mouth, just enough to thumb at some of the dried blood beneath the cut, and Connor can’t see Kendall’s face, he can’t, but he can hear his hoarse, wet breath, hear the mumbled ‘m sorry, and it’s all it takes for Roman’s face to crack open and for Shiv to stare at the floor like she’d stared at her plate at dinner, her own look closed and stormy again, and Connor thinks he might not even be there. Connor wonders if this is a dream, if its astral projection, if he’s never really with them, always on the outside, looking in, and there’s something inside him that tells him stupid, that tells him they’re teenagers, and Shiv is staring at the floor like she knows not to look up and Roman’s got their father’s ring stamped on his face, and Kendall’s got their father’s fingers wrapped around his arm, and he thinks he can’t look at them.
These kids.
He’s supposed to take care of them.
He drops his gaze to the floor, a tentative hand falling to Kendall’s shoulder, and he hates that it’s a relief, when Kendall doesn’t flinch.
The moment sits, but then, like everything else, it breaks.
“Whatever,” Roman says suddenly to Kendall, loose and warmer than he has any right to be, especially when he adds: “Will you throw up again if I stick my finger in your eye?”
(Which yeah, for the record, he will).
