3 More Character Types the World Needs More Of

Or at least, I do.

1. The denied redeemed villain

I need this. So badly right now. So, so, so many “redemption arcs” are half-assed and carry undertones of guilt by the heroes, gaslighting them into thinking the villain “wasn’t all that bad” right before they make some big heroic sacrifice, as if that’s ever enough to make up for the damage that was done.

But you know what I never see? A villain who’s done some awful shit, wakes up to reality, tries to apologize and… is denied. No, it’s not enough to be sorry. No, you’re not absolved of your crimes just because you cry really hard on your knees. Yes, you have to work for it. Yes, even if you work for it for the rest of your whole life, those you hurt are not obligated to forgive you.

Example that sadly did not happen in canon: Enji Todoroki

2. The liar revealed who loses

This fucker lies and cheats his way into his lover’s arms (and liars revealed are always men, because their love interests are always women put in the place of “but he tried really hard and you need to forgive him uwu” unless it’s gay). Similar to above, no, you do not get rewarded just for feeling sorry.

This character builds an entire relationship (and it’s specifically romance that I take such an issue with) on a lie. They are not who they say they are, specifically, they lie about their identity because they know their lover would not let this happen if they knew the truth.

It’s one thing to lie about something inconsequential, or to lie about something unrelated, but to lie deliberately to present yourself as the perfect suitor—and these are never little white lies, these are usually entirely false identities, or secrets so damning that risking the truth could mean arrest or even death—just. Why?

Yeah, okay, you never thought you’d get this far. Cool. You don’t have to tell her the truth, but you have to leave before you trick her into sleeping with you.

It’s just. So squicky. And the lesson always is that he deserves love, that he makes up for it with everything else, that he’s just got a winning personality. She always forgives him, even if they fight about it, it’s so, so predictable.

3. The paragon who loses faith

I don’t know that we need a whole bunch of these characters, but so many paragons are painted as heroes with unshakable loyalty to their causes and I’d love to see a devolution of character where they just can’t keep smiling and pretending it’s alright. That there is a limit to how much shit they can take.

They don’t have to go full villain, but maybe they just stop caring, maybe they get cynical, maybe they just don’t show up for work the next day, maybe they’re not there when they’re needed the most.

There’s a few stories I can think of where the masses realize they’ve screwed up and show the hero that their faith has been rewarded (Nolan Bats being one of them) but I mean really a hero who just cannot take it anymore, throws in the towel, and walks away knowing it’s the hardest thing they’ve ever had to do.

basically 2012/2013 used to get (and sometimes still is) generalized as this dark and awful time period where dnp "hated" each other and us, when in actuality it was two very young very scared closeted queer people who were in the process of several major life changes at once while also dealing with a new exploding fan base

there's a few big things from that "era" that people talk about:

deleting old posts- around this era dnp deleted a ton of old tweets/formsprings/dailybooths that could read as them being in a relationship. they were blowing up online and had more eyes on them than ever before, not to mention had just starting working with the BBC (where being queer would have greatly affected their careers). also keep in mind dan was still in the closet to EVERYONE, and now he's got tons of fans going through his accounts and sending shit to HIS LITTLE BROTHER on tumblr asking if dan's gay. anyway people decided them deleting early tweets meant they had broken up

dan's customerservice tumblr blog- in the middle of them blowing up and people finding all these old posts, dan in an effort to control the narrative, makes a new blog for people to anonymously ask him questions (: which went about as well as you can imagine for an extremely defensive closeted 20 year old with undiagnosed depression. basically he said some unfortunately things out of fear

the video leaked again- won't get too much into that because of the subject matter, but the yeah the video leaked for the second time except this time way more people saw it/shared it and dnp actually had to respond to it this time. which is. just fucking awful and heartbreaking all around.

phil persona- basically this was the birth of the amazingphil persona that'd follow phil to the quiff era. he became more sanitized and less personable than original phil fans were used to (which got romanticized into uwu he's sad because he and dan broke up and now he's shutting down)

"no homo"- pretty self explanatory...people asked if they were gay (every single day constantly on every platform) and they would say no because what else are they going to say. this one particular vyou where dan's actually trying to make people think kills me (x) god he was so young. but they'd also started doing the "omg i don't want to see you naked/ew people want us to kiss" and the infamous "you need a girlfriend" "my future wife" etc etc.

the breakup rumors mostly stemmed from and became popular/ treated as fact by younger fans who kind of saw them as these fictionalized characters (which i mean not to blame them because they were literal children and youtubers were still so new that people did treat them like tv show characters you could be friends with). it also got turned into more sinister theories like the "dan is abusing phil" ones and "phil is actually gay but dan isn't and just used phil for attention and fame in 2009"

there was also factors like them moving to london in 2012 (and people were CONVINCED they'd stop being friends in london??), people thinking them getting popular would mean they'd get girlfriends like other popular youtubers (shoutout danrific shippers), and most importantly just them sharing less about their personal lives with their audience. like of course they're not going to live tweet their day/location anymore when people are showing up at their house and trying to find their families.

basically, dnp were putting boundaries between themselves and their fans, but the fans interpreted it as putting distance between each other. in actuality the 2012/2013 era was full of some really amazing memories and content and things people loved (literally the photobooth challenge is from 2013!! sleeping phil saying i hate you is from 2012!!!)

Am I the only person who isn’t on the “Infantilizing Ballister” train?

Let’s be frank here, majority of Tumblr, Pinterest, TikTok, etc. portray Ballister as some “UwU wet cat with big ol’ eyes that needs to be protected by his ferocious bf.” In my humble opinion, I find it very off-putting and rather, stereotypical of gay men. Ballister’s character is misinterpreted SO MUCH with how he’s portrayed on many social media platforms.

Even the Nimona wiki will debunk that Ballister’s misinterpretation isn’t true like at all. He’s absolutely determined as hell to achieve his goals and is a MASSIVE hardworker, he broods quite a lot which is something that people due tend to forget about, he’s incredibly smart, being able to craft a mechanical arm pit of spare parts in hideout is just brilliant, Ballister is yes, slightly awkward and can be paranoid at times, but man people really amplified those traits along with his big eyes and like basically made a completely different character out of it, and finally, he can actually defend himself and was the top of the class when the knights in his generation were cadets. On top of that, Ballister isn’t built like a twink, he’s literally buff and the end of the movie proves that even more. He has more broader shoulders than Ambrosius and just because someone is shorter doesn’t mean they’re just a “little baby.” As someone who’s on the shorter side, it kinda annoys me a little with how people who’re shorter are stereotyped like this.

This has not been the only time we’ve seen this phenomenon before with queer characters. It’s been an occurring thing for many years. One character being seen as the “Lil baby boy that needs to be protected” while the bf is seen as the “humanized dog that’s jealous over anyone who tried to even speak to the “baby boy” and is secretly a perv.” That trope has been used in MANY fandoms and Webtoons. It just throws gay men into a box and honestly it’s saddening to me. A lot of Fujoshis are at fault with this with how much they fangirl like hell over gay men and throw them in a box that appeals to their fantasies.

This is something I want to get out of my chest, because honestly it has been occurring so much I have to speak about. And before you try to make a whole argument with me, I’m going to say that yes, headcanons do indeed exist and are valid of course, but literally if the headcanons are just blatant stereotypes then honesty that’s really, really sad. Like that man is NOT taller than me (I'm 169 cm) no WAY. I don't think he's insecure about it, he's used to it and he knows there are people into that (especially since he's mainly going for men 💀). The highlights are overdone but I wanted to experiment with like extremely shiny, greased up skin look just because I’m normally very averse to spec light but I sorta chose to lean into…idk why. It’s not ‘correct’ but I like the effect.

Also, this was just an excuse to draw his face, more muscles, and armpit hair. It may seem so fucking weird but I promise, it’s just because I’ve been trying to stylize approach to body hair and I’m liking the “one big graphic swath of color” more than “repeat strands,” it fits the overall style.

Anyway, Arthur is a punk gym rat but he’s far from an asshole, he’s mischievous but being Punk has nothing to do with his manners. He’s big for his size but, of course, there are bigger buggers around in my AU. He’s definitely more of a ‘bruv’ than ‘chap’ kind of gent, has a tea shop/bookstore south of London with an Adult Section behind beaded curtains. Stolas' "Character Growth" of Making Amends With Blitz is Poor as Hell

Something many critics don't seem to mention when talking about Stolas' characterization in Season 2 is how the season tries (keyword tries) to have Stolas go through an arc of fixing his mistake in regards to making the deal with Blitz and, ya know, sexually abusing him. The show is acknowledging that Stolas fucked up, which means it isn't coddling him...right?

Well, this arc first gets kickstarted in Ozzie's when Blitz explicitly tells Stolas to "not pretend like anything we have is anything but you wanting me to fuck you", showing to Stolas that Blitz doesn't feel the same way about him as Stolas feels about Blitz, which gives Stolas a moment to reflect on their relationship.

The Circus then shows that Stolas believed that for once, he had a genuine mutually affectionate relationship with someone, that someone being Blitzo, as Stolas felt some kind of happiness he never felt before and could never get with Stella, only to realize that it was all a lie and Blitzo doesn't feel the same way as Stolas did for him. Stolas desired genuine intamite affection and thought he had that but he didn't, and so he looks to a book to try and find Blitz an alternative so he can continue his job without staying in the deal, chosing to free Blitz.

Oops then shows Stolas going to Ozzie's place to get the Ausmodean Crystal for Blitz, and The Full Moon shows Stolas giving the crystal to Blitz, now learning to let him go, putting his own selfish desires for affection aside and reconizing what he did to Blitz was wrong and choosing to let him be free from the deal.

So...this, on paper, sounds fantastic, right? The show is making an arc of Stolas growing from his mistakes, realizing the deal is wrong and choosing to let him go while acknoweldging Blitz's mistakes right....right?????

Well...no. While this is a compelling arc in isolation, there are several issues that taint it. For one, the arc revolves around multiple plot holes and contrivinces in order to work. I've already mentioned this several times but, Stolas and Blitz being childhood friends feels like a retcon and it doesn't really line up with any of their interactions in the first season, and this arc relies on the two's past friendship in order to work.

Further more, there's the fact that Stolas shoulden't even have any real love for Blitz in the first place considering that Blitz stole from him not once, but twice. First Blitz steals all of Stolas' items when they were kids for his dad by tricking him into a game and the second time Blitz takes advantage of Stolas again to Steal the grimoire. Did Stolas REALLY just...not realize that Blitz took advantage of him in either of those instances????

Why would he have ANY love towards him after he did those things? He should HATE Blitz for taking advantage of his feelings, but he doesn't. There's also the fact that this arc is just a complete replacement of Stolas' character in the first season, fully comitting to his sudden shift from a man who made mistakes that hurt others to a UwU gay sad soft boy who just wanted genuine affection, which is a jarring change for him as a character, and this arc competely relies on this sudden shift.

It removes everything that made Stolas an interesting character in the first season and replaces it with something unreconizable from his previous iteration, so this arc ends up feeling like an unnatural direction for Stolas' character to go to. The other big problem with this arc is how it codes Stolas' actions in a sympathetic light - as in, he only made the deal because he believed he had real affection with Blitz.

The thing is, this whole thing ends up making Stolas even less sympathetic than before. You'd think that Stolas would care about his childhood friend's consent in this matter because even if he thought that Blitz liked being his plaything he would still care about his boundries since well, he is supposed to be Stolas' childhood friend...right??? But instead of that he decided to put his childhood friend in a situation where he HAS to accept the deal or else he'll lose his job, and he's doing that through coersion, which is a horrific thing to do to someone especially someone you CLAIM to be your first ever friend.

None of Stolas and Blitzo's interactions in the first season come across as Stolas being oblivous to Blitz being uncomfortable rather it's Stolas not caring about Blitz being uncomfortable and not taking it seriously because he only cares about his own sexual pleasure. While Stolas' actions are still painted negetavily the show is using a sympathetic reason for his actions but that sympathetic reasoning doesn't end up working and if anything makes him look even less sympathetic than before. It's supposed to be "bad actions codded with sympathetic motivations" but it doesn't work because the actions he's done don't make sense with the motivation the show outlines.

And this brings me to the last, and, probably the biggest issue with Stolas' "growth arc" in Season 2; the show's refusal to admit the full extent of Stolas' what Stolas has done to Blitz. Season 1 had Stolas consistantly belittle and talk down to Blitz, ignoring his boundries and constantly dehumanizing him into just being his "impish little plaything", yet, the show pretends as if making the deal was the only bad thing Stolas ever did to Blitz and just ignores all the other stuff that he did in the first season.

It contributes to the problem of the show refusing to acknowledge Stolas' mistakes and instead choosing to downplay them or demonize those who dislike him for valid reasons (also, no, the description acknowledging Stolas' lack of self-awarness doesn't work because if Stolas is meant to be in the wrong during the episode than it should be frammed as such, yet the episode just frames him as solely the victim. That ain't good writting). And there's the fact that this arc would be rendered null anyway because well all know that Blitz and Stolas are going to get together anyway by the end of the show meaning that Stolas never had to let go of Blitz in the first place because then he'll get back to him.

So, overall, while this arc is fine in isolation, it falls apart due to it relying on too many plot holes and not actually having Stolas reconize the full extent of his mistakes, and so saying that the show is coddling Stolas is still a valid critique given that this arc is still codding his actions under a sympathetic light.

Later teens hit him like a freight train and he struggled to navigate through his feelings for Arthur. Like it’s a fight for his life not to grab Arthur and kiss him, but things like that could get him beat or worse. So he did his best to bottle it up and ignore it.

Arthur is completely oblivious. Literally no clue.

It's when John is around 20 that Arthur realizes he might care about John a little too much. John isn't a scrawny kid anymore, he's tall and broad and god damn his voice just does something to him.

Of course this scares the ever loving shit out of Arthur. He'd done pretty well at pushing down his attraction towards men, but this was different. John wasn't some stranger on the street, this was his best friend.

John 100% makes the first move. Despite Arthur also pining for John, he’s way too scared to act on it. Worried John wouldn’t reciprocate, worried that John would hate him for it, or even worse, he might leave again.

John’s scars drive Arthur fucking wild. He loves that scowl John usually has and the scars make him look a little dangerous. Just completely smitten with his face, which John refuses to believe. Arthur loves feeling the scar on John’s lip when they kiss, and can hardly resist trailing a few kisses down the scars on his cheek whenever they’re alone.

Yeah, they're the cringe trope of "human furnace + always cold". Arthur almost radiates heat, and good god, John's hands are always like ice.

Arthur loves holding John's hands. He loves kissing his knuckles and trying to warm them up. He'll find himself subconsciously grabbing John's hands, just being a big sap and always wanting to hold them. It always gets him flustered when folk around camp point it out.

Once they're out to the gang they're almost always near each other. The most touching Arthur allows is their shoulders and/or legs touching when they sit by each other, maybe a hand on the other's thigh. John just wants to sit on his lap.

Okay, this question has been making me roll and grit my teeth at night. Why do people make Sirius, Regulus, and Barty Crouch so feminine? I don't get it. It's almost weird in a way because Sirius seems pretty masculine to me, he just has long hair and a flamboyant personality. Regulus, we don't even know much about the guy and already I see fanart of his being a twink. And Crouch...I don't understand that.

I am not against mlm ships or gay characters/character head cannons. I myself believe that Snape is probably under that trans or gender-neutral flag (he radiates that energy), and that he is queer coded. But those guys? Ehh...it's weird how there's always a "top" and "bottom" for these kinds of things, don't you think? Can't they both just be masculine?

But can we agree that being gay doesn't mean being feminine? Everyone was shocked when Barty turned out to be a Death Eater; his father describes him as someone who got excellent grades, seemingly a kid who flew under the radar, which is why everyone was so shocked when he turned out to be one of Voldy's boys. These people have turned him into a walking caricature, some kind of 80s diva that the real Barty never was. Again, they've created a character that doesn't exist and given him a canon name. And Regulus Black... What they've done with Regulus is also scandalous. In the end, they've turned him into a whiny, spineless, hyper-"feminized" character so that James can be the alpha male who saves him. Don't they see how terribly problematic these stereotypes are and the disservice they do to the community? I mean, they boast about being champions of LGBTQ+ representation, but all they do is reproduce super toxic and harmful clichés that perpetuate dynamics from a misogynistic and sexist heteronormative perspective. And on top of that, they do all this by completely changing the characters, dismembering them, stripping them of every ounce of their true personalities, and replacing it with their made-up nonsense.
