"Catching Fire", Chapter 14

Part 2: The Quell

Chapter 14: Katniss knows she won't write goodbye letters to her family. Effie has an idea. They watch the recap. Katniss has nighmares so Peeta and she watch the tape of Haymitch's games. Haymitch says his trick with the force field was almost as bad as Katniss with the berries.

Thoughts:

-- A lot of faves first appear in this chapter. I am excite.

-- The Victor of the 25th Hunger Games is not in the lot Effie sent. Peeta thinks "they must be dead." I suppose the Victor could've just had cancer or drinked themselves to death. I immediately suspected foul play though. I always assume the Capitol is up to something.

-- I might have to put my thoughts on Haymitch's games in a separate post. SO MUCH HAPPENING.

Quotes:

"I had it especially done to match Katniss' pin. I was thinking we might get you a golden ankle band and maybe find Haymitch a gold bracelet or something so we could all look like a team."

Effie expresses herself with fashion, guys. She had her hair done to match Katniss' pin before the Reaping to show her solidarity. IDK why this makes me want to cry. It's not rebellion really. It's more like Effie is like one of those sportsball fans who paints themself in their team's colors. Except she's not just rooting for 12 to win some trophy, but to live.

If he were the tribute, he would have owed Peeta nothing and could be as drunk as he liked. Now it's going to take all he's got to keep Peeta alive in an arena full of his old friends, and he'll probably fail.

I think we're all lucky Haymitch wasn't the tribute in that case. Being hungover in the clock arena sounds miserable (so much lightning and noise!) Although maybe if Haymitch and Katniss had been the tributes they would've just jumped off their podiums and high-fived each other before drowning themselves in the sea?

In the history of the Games, there have been seventy-five victors. Fifty-nine are still alive.

33 victors are NOT reaped but killed between now and the end of Mockingjay. More than die in the Arena. You actually had a better shot if you volunteered. (Congrats, Enobaria.)

Effie makes hushed, distressed comments like "Oh, not Cecilia" and "Well, Chaff never could stay out of a fight.""

I understand the "not Cecilia comment" since we are later told that she has three small children. Did Chaff volunteer? Or is it just he got reaped so "oh well he could never stay out of a fight"?

I try to make some mental record of the other tributes, but like last year, only a few really stick in my head. There's the classically beautiful brother and sister from District 1 who were victors in consecutive years when I was little. Brutus, a volunteer from District 2, who must be at least forty and apparently can't wait to get back in the arena. Finnick, the handsome bronze-haired guy from District 4 who was crowned ten years ago at the age of fourteen. A hysterical young woman with flowing brown hair is also called from 4, but she's quickly replaced by a volunteer, an eighty-year-old woman who needs a cane to walk to the stage. Then there's Johanna Mason, the only living female victor from 7, who won a few years back by pretending she was a weakling. The woman from 8 who Effie calls Cecelia, who looks about thirty, has to detach herself from the three kids who run up to cling to her. Chaff, a man from 11 who I know to be one of Haymitch's particular friends, is also in.

First appearance of my beloved Mags! Also I'd like to see the footage of Johanna rolling her eyes as they brought out the reaping bowl with just her name in it. It also means Johanna has known for months that she is going back to the Arena. I wonder how she handled it compared to Katniss?

After the anthem, they show President Snow drawing the envelope for the second Quarter Quell. He looks younger but just as repellent.

So Snow definitely moved up from Gamemaker to President by 50. But Finnick says he was a "young man" when he rose to power so I am thinking he became President around 25. Anyone else have thoughts on this?

Favourite each hunger games movies scenes?

Oh, gosh, ask the hard questions, why don’t ya? 😉 (Though, seriously though, thanks for the ask! 😊)

I haven’t seen the movies in a beat, (I know, I know) so I’m just going off of what sticks out in my memory....

THG: Um, can I go with.... Rue hiding up in the ceiling during training? I thought that moment was sweet and played very well. It’s foreshadowing and reminder of just how young and smart Rue is...... *sniffle*

ALSO! The scene where she blows up the cornucopia. It just feels bad ass for some reason.

CF: Can I say the whole movie? 😍 Because I love the whole movie. This is what got me *really* into The Hunger Games.

If I have to pick, I really like anything with Finnick and Mags.... The Elevator scene.... Cinna..... (“I’m not a betting man, but if I was, Girl on Fire, I’m betting on you.”) The chariots..... Peeta’s “demonstration” before the games drawn on the floor...... And my personal fave is the archery training she does before the games, it is just bad ass and I love it.

TMJ 1: Um, a lot of little moments from this one, tbh. Effie, the *sleep* scene, demanding Peeta back and using notes, Haymitch scrubbing the board..... Cinna’s book for her. (“I’m still betting on you.”) Just all the details.

TMJ 2: The dialogue in Sign with Castor and Pollux, (or was that the first one, too?) the lumberjacks scaling the trees in 7, (that’s the first one, too, isn’t it?) the two *deaths* (you know who I mean, trying not to spoil) were handled in a way that really choked me up, Haymitch reading the note to Katniss at the end really gets me every time......

Did I already send you the ask about which book is your fave of the trilogy and which characters?

Nope! But I am happy to answer. 😁

Choosing a favorite book in the trilogy is hard! My immediate answer used to be Catching Fire because I absolutely adore all the development we see in Katniss, Peeta, their relationship with each other and with Haymitch. It has my favorite moment in the entire trilogy and many more of my top faves come from that book. 

But after my first 2020 reread (I finished that, read the prequel, and jumped back to the first book), Mockingjay really surprised me! During my initial read of it, I hated it and thought it really dull, but I think that was 18-year-old Terri’s gut reaction to what happened to Peeta (and he not being present for a good chunk of the book) and not getting Katniss’ character on how she treated him because of it. Well I’m singing a different tune now because I’m in love with that book and all its glorious angst. Someone I know once said how Mockingjay is the most romantic Everlark-wise out of the series and they weren’t wrong! Katniss literally thinks she may be having a heart attack after seeing his attack on television because her heart hurts! COME. ON. *Chef’s kiss* I love it.

I still think Catching Fire is my favorite, though, because of the different sides of Peeta that we get to see as Katniss gets to know him better. I love that we get to be there with her as she slowly falls in love with him, despite the threat of Snow hanging over her head. Then we get a whole fun cast of characters like Finnick, Johanna, Mags. Catching Fire not only flushes out the characters we already knew, but also Katniss’ world as we learn more about the uprisings. It feels more character-driven compared to the first and last book due to its focus on the rising rebellion. 

As for favorite characters, in this order: Peeta Mellark*, Katniss Everdeen**, Effie Trinket, Haymitch Abernathy, Finnick Odair, Gale Hawthorne, Johanna Mason, Boggs, Cressida 

*Peeta has been my absolute favorite in the trilogy since his entrance. I fell in love with his character and was very annoyed with Katniss during their first Games because I thought him genuine (WHICH HE WAS! 💗). I consider him one of my favorite characters of all time. He’s so kind, selfless, and human. Plus that dry sense of humor? Yes. No wonder Katniss had a low burn crush on him since the bread. 

**Katniss is basically tied with Peeta now. She’s always been my second favorite, but my 2020 reread really let me take a step back from Peeta and just bask in how wonderful and funny she is as a narrator. We stan a queen who loves being petty to her sister’s cat because she it makes him look stupid. She’s so fantastic and flawed and my heart breaks when she’s upset. She’s now on the list of favorite characters of all time. 

I could honestly gush about those two for days. 😍

Movies I feel like everyone must watch:

Southpaw- one of my top 3 faves , the story is great , the acting is great. You know something is good when it makes you feel something, and best believe I feel lots of things anytime I watch it. I wanna choke people, I wanna cry, I wanna smack his daughter, I wanna give him a hug. I cry every time. I just love it.

Dallas Buyers Club- INCREDIBLE has to be my #1 favorite. Jared Leto was amazing , I cry every time thanks to him. Matthew McConaughey blew my mind the first time I watched it. And it’s just so educational and realistic and tells a great story.

The Hunger Games Franchise- it’s a fun movie to watch (despite being so dark) haymitch , cesar flickerman, effie, and finnick make it worth the watch. They’re filmed in such beautiful locations and it’s one of Lawrence’s best performances of all time.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory- the Johnny depp version though. He portrays a weird outcast so well. The kids were incredible. The oompa loompas were great. The sets were incredible. I just love it, one of my faves to watch around the holidays for some reason.

Coraline- LET ME SAY SOMETHING ABOUT CORALINE REAL QUICK. TO THIS DAY BEING 18 YEARS OLD IM STILL SCARED OF THIS MOVIE AND HAVE NIGHTMARES SO IMAGINE ME AS A LITTLE KID WHEN IT CAME OUT. scarred me for life. The stop motion animation is absolutely gorgeous. The story line is great and teaches a valuable lesson to children. Can be enjoyed by both parents and children. You can get some great Halloween costumes out of it haha

Dunkirk- originally went for Harry , went back for the soundtrack. Though the visuals were phenomenal as well. The acting was great. Told an amazing story from history that I had never heard of before. Brought an important event that tends to be overlooked to light.

It’s p small and it has lots of art I can actually appreciate on the walls and it’s got a low ceiling and kind of a comforting, dark-but-still-sunny den kind of vibe. The booths are actually comfortable. A lot of wood and smokey colours. There’s a slate fireplace crackling somewhere. It smells strongly of coffee and vaguely of liquorice. There’s a spot at the back that’s mostly hidden from site, the perfect place to curl up and read a book while picking on a muffin that was reasonably cheap but the size of your whole hand. Closest place to heaven on earth.

40.what was your biggest fear as a kid? is it the same today?

Not being able to breathe. Pretty much, ya.

I forget to eat and generally forget to take care of myself, I deny myself things I like for absolutely no reason??? I procrastinate everything, I bite my fingernails super low and also the skin around them bc I’m fuckin constantly anxious and can’t sit still, I overthink everything, I stay up way too late… honestly I could keep going, you get the point. XD

48.tell us about your pets!

OKAY SO. Ria is absolutely OBSESSED with her ball, and I mean OBSESSED to the point where she has no idea what to do with herself if you take it away and gets all anxious and whines and paces till you give it back. She constantly sheds and she does this sUpER CuTe thing where she wraps her front paw around your leg while you’re trying to walk and trips you. :))) Granger is either made of metal or a deflated pool toy and there’s no in between. She eats literally anything, including ants nests bc you know they must taste GREAT. She’s super stubborn. She gets smile wrinkles if you rub her neck. Maudie was rescue we got as a really small puppy. We only knew her mum but her dad must have been a Pomeranian bc she looks almost exactly like one. She has this thing where she bites you when you surprise her but really she’s a sweetheart. She’s mostly blind and deaf and has no idea where she is most of the time, I don’t think. XD The chickens are all idiots, the ducks are scared of me but still eat out of my hand when I offer them grapes. Haymitch likes to jump up on my back, Effie likes falling asleep on my lap, and Cinna pecks me a lot and leaves bruises but she lets me stroke her at night when she’s dozing off. :’)

why were you drawn to each one of your characters?

ruth balakov  - i’ve had her character in my head for such a long time, and i was finally just like “fuck it! i’m gonna write her!” bc i love parks and rec, but i just can’t play leslie bc there’s too much history and stuff and i really wanted to play a quirky nina fc bc i used to have one that i loved, and it just seemed like a perfect fit

samir chaudhry - i felt a desperate need to reply as an astronaut to @cverture‘s beth, and so samir was born 

tutankhamun “tut” mcmullen  - tut’s origin story is one of the best!!! so, @idyllicism and i decided to use this randomizing character generator to do a fun random thread, and it gave me tut (which is why his name is so out there) who has grown so close to my heart, and i am thankful

jughead jones - tbh i added jughead bc i wanted to write him properly aKA ASEXUAL! I’M LOOKIN AT U RIVERDALE

melody valentine - tbh… i added her bc i wanted to write her with jenna :) and also i loved archie comics as a kid and always thought melody was so beautiful and her voice came easily to me so !

mark darcy - buckle in, this is gonna be a long ride. bridget jones’s diary is one of those movies that i love to death. it’s one of my sick movies, it’s one of my sad movies, my homesick movies, it helps me feel better. so, watching bridget jones i’ve always identified with both of the lead characters, but there’s something about mark that was especially easy for me to access. i’m still trying to figure out exactly what it is, but there’s something to him that i just…understand, if that makes sense. when i decided to make a multi-muse, he was one of the very first characters i had as a muse bc i knew i had to add him. he’s in my heart and soul. 

choi han-kyul - so han-kyul is another one of those characters who i just really strongly identify with. in coffee prince, he’s someone who undergoes some huge development in who he is, and when i saw the drama for the first time, it aligned with some things i was dealing with in my own life. his relationship with his father, his coming to terms with his sexuality, his maturation, his longing to live up to his own potential, it all just hit me. another heart and soul character. 

dr. noelle akopian - i added her for the funsies

greg serrano - i think i added him because he helps me come to terms with some real life stuff i have going on and also because i loved his development and wanted to explore that past what the show was able to give us

maya - honestly she’s the most pure being, and i just had to add her

johnny castle - when i saw dirty dancing, i fell in love with johnny, and that’s pretty much it. god bless. 

blair warner - i cANNOT fuck this is taking so much longer than i thought it would, but i have so many muses, and want to give them all their proper due, and fuclasfhdads. so from the beginning, i walked into a gas station this summer, and one of the employees was like “oh my god, you look exactly like blair from the facts of life!” and i was like “haha thanks!” bc i didn’t know who she was, but my dad who was with me was like “oh my god she does!” and then he was like “she’s like her more than just in looks too” meaning our personalities were similar. so OFC i had to watch this show to see my doppelganger. and WOW i was amazed bc she’s the closest i’ve ever seen to myself in physical aspects but also we’re very similar personality-wise too, and after my first episode, i fell in love, and i just had to add her as a muse

jo polniaczek - i didn’t expect jo, but after i watched that first episode, i fell in love just as i did with blair. honestly, the writers and cast can say she’s straight all they want, but jo is a gay icon, and it’s just so cool to see a character like that who’s so layered. jo is sensitive but also tough. she’s gone through a lot, but still holds such compassion and i love her to death and fuckfdsakfasf she’s honestly ruined all human beings for me now bc she’s the ultimate. 

emily gilmore - so, emily is another one of those relating characters. what can i, a 22 year old baby bi, have in common with an old middle aged straight? well, let me tell you: a LOT. i identify so much with the way that emily has tried all her life to succeed in the society she was brought up in and having set ways of doing things and then just…letting go and trying to make herself happy. it’s inspiring and i love her. 

meredith quill - listen, i’m not a fan of superhero movies, but i like the guardians of the galaxy series, and when i saw the second movie, i fell instantly in love with meredith and her light, and i had to add her

alice longbottom - i have never read the books, but i’ve read a lot of fandom stuff, and i just love the longbottoms, and i like that there’s a certain amount of freedom there to explore who she is and her story

arthur weasley - arthur reminds me of my dad, and his voice comes super easily to me which is why i added him

victoire weasley - again, i like the amount of freedom i’m afforded in figuring out who she is and all that

helga g. pataki - this is another heart and soul character. as a kid, i was also mean and dramatic and precocious. i was a LOT like helga. even today, i struggle with trying to soften myself for the benefit of others because i can come across as intimidating (idk why??). but i just…it’s just like damn. i get you, helga. we both have an alcoholic parent, tense relationships with our older sisters, and we both don’t have a TON of friends and just feel kind of…out of place, i guess, in the world we live in. we’re a little out of place and i just get her. i understand her, and i’m glad that she exists. 

effie trinket - she’s just such a fascinating character, and i want to explore her more

katniss everdeen - i get her

jane villanueva - see, jane is someone who i think i look up to. she’s someone i wish i could be more like. i chose to add her as a muse because i love her and just want to give her a nice life bc lord knows she deserves it

michael cordero i added him bc he loves jane and is a huge dork and so caring and i lvoe him

rogelio de la vega - in a weird way, this is another character i relate a lot to. we’re both dramatic and a little vain, but we also care a lot about our family and most of the time, our intentions are good. he’s honestly such a fun character, and i’m glad i added him. 

elle woods - i added her bc she’s amazing??? one of the best people of all time??? and her voice came easily to me so i was like “all right!!!!”

ryan atwood - he’s my fave character from the oc. i love his development, and i love how he’s not exactly who you expect him to be. you think he’s gonna be this big troublemaker, but actually, he just wants a stable life, and he wants the people he loves to be happy. he just wants peace

pam beesly - she’s another heart character. i think a lot of people find it easy to relate to pam bc she goes through so many relatable things, and her story is overcoming insecurities and becoming more confident, and i think that’s something a lot of people can see themselves in. 

fitzwilliam darcy - i mean, i’ve always loved pride & prejudice, and i’ll be damned if darcy isn’t the easiest character for me to understand (a lot like mark)

jane bennet - she holds a special place in my heart bc people have said i’m like jane, and i’m always like “i wish” bc she’s the softest, most pure, most kind person, and i just needed that positivity in my life

queen clarisse renaldi - mY LOVE i love how they made her so layered in the movies, giving you hints of her background. i’ve always been interested in exploring her past, so i added her as a muse (another character whose voice came easily to me)

sabrina fairchild - sabrina is one of those movies i would watch after school was i was younger. i loved the romanticism of it and the costumes and music, and as i grew older, i started to think that it would have made for a more interesting movie if sabrina dumped linus at the end rather than ending up with him. what’s so interesting about that movie is her growth. she goes from a very dark place and undergoes some major development while still holding underpinnings of her past despite desperately trying to leave them behind. 

capheus onyango - i love sense8, so i knew i wanted to add muses or a muse from there, and going through all the characters, capheus’s voice was the one that came most easily to me. he’s more than just his optimism, and i love having him in my roster bc he has such warmth and compassion for those around him. he worries about how his actions will affect others, and i just have such immense love for him. 

princess fiona - me??? i grew up on shrek, and i love it in the most unironic way possible. i sincerely adore the movie and the musical, and fiona is a character i’ve always loved and related to a little bit. 

shrek - but more than relating to fiona, i probably relate to shrek more. my family has always joked that i’m like an onion too and that i have layers just like shrek. he grosses me out a lil with all the farting and earwax, but otherwise, i love shrek and think that for living alone for years after being abandoned by his parents, he was able to grow rather quickly once meeting other people, and shrek is good in my book

charles brooks - he’s another darcy like character, although i don’t love him as much. i added him bc lbr the younger fandom needs him

josh - mY SON i love josh and i think that he has so much growing to do, and i love how the show has left some of his background open so that i can take a lil bit more liberty in figuring him out. i also love his adventurous spirit and his ease while also being so loyal and loving. he’s someone i really love. 

chuck bartowski - chuck is one of those types that’s easier for me to write, and i think it’s just cause one of our core values is the same: family. family is one of the most important things to him, and it’s one of the most important things to me, and i think we just get each other in that aspect and more. 

denny duquette - “i’m a man! i’m a strong virile horse of a man stuck in the body some weak sick bastard that I don’t know, like or recognize. now if you knew what that feels like, you would have never convinced me to let a battery run my heart. if you knew what that feels like izzie, you would have let me go.” this is why.

again, i have fun with all of them, but probably rogelio. he’s just so much fun to write. helga is a lot of fun too! and ruth!

i mean, there are always more muses i’m thinking of adding. i’ve thought about adding na ae-ra from cunning single lady, but i’m pretty sure no one would write with her, so i haven’t added her yet. 

i’m planning on watching the good place, and i just know i’ll probably wanna add someone from there

adding someone from frasier would be cool, but like…i highly doubt there would be an audience for them. like i’d love to write niles or smth, but idk if anyone’s even watched it. i mean, that hasn’t stopped me before, but i’m not pressed about it rn

i’ve always been wanting to add elizabeth from the crown because she’s another one of those characters i just super strongly relate to, but seeing as how she’s actually a real person, i haven’t. this is where i get a little confused because i know she’s a real person, but also, the show takes liberties, and she’s not actually queen elizabeth. like if i could take her character and make her not the real queen of england i would? but i just don’t know about what other people think of that? i dont knowslfjhads it’s a weird situation.

my all-time ultimate fave character: Katniss and Finnick. Like, I have a lot of them who I love, but Katniss and Finnick are tied for my number one spot.

a character I didn’t used to like but now do: Mrs. Everdeen took a while to grow on me, but by the end of Mockingjay, she really had.

a character I used to like but now don’t: tbh, it’s not that I used to like Peeta and now don’t, because I never really liked him and I still wouldn’t say that I dislike him, personally

—but there’s a lot about Peeta, especially with regard to his and Katniss’s relationship, that I find troublesome for various reasons (e.g., the way that Katniss, who is definitely canonically dark-skinned and is written against a backdrop that’s blatantly inspired by the racialized dimensions of classism and poverty, is always contextualized as Not Really Deserving the blonde white boy, who is regularly written in terms that are super not subtle about comparing him to Jesus)

To say nothing of how the text itself seems to agree with this idea, and does shit like go, “Wow, Peeta is oppressed by the Capitol too, like damn Katniss how much of a bitch are you, I mean your family and Gale’s only haven’t very literally starved to death because you and Gale know how to hunt, but wow, damn, Peeta had to help make the goat cheese and apple tarts and he wasn’t allowed to eat them because they were too expensive, that’s totally the same thing as people in the Seam literally starving to death”

Like, I’m not saying that Peeta and his family weren’t oppressed by the Capitol, because they were…… but it’s explicitly established in-text that the Capitol manufactures gradations as part of how they try to keep the Districts all fighting each other instead of fighting them, so yes, Peeta and his family did not experience the same thing as Gale, Katniss, and theirs, and part of that difference was how the Mellarks didn’t need to worry about getting enough to eat, they just couldn’t eat the expensive treats

The thing that bugs me the most, though, is the way that Peeta has supposedly been in love with Katniss since they were kids — except……… how? How can you say that he has truly been in love with Katniss when he, by his own goddamn admission, knew basically nothing about her and never even tried to get to know her for real? I’d buy that he was in love with his ludicrous headcanons about Katniss, but that’s not the same as being in love with Katniss Everdeen: Actual Person

And sorry not sorry, Peeta, but it is NOT true that you, “couldn’t talk to her”; you COULD have talked to Katniss and you chose not to talk to Katniss or deal with her at all in any context where you didn’t have the power of life and death over her (whether it was because she was literally dying of starvation, or because she needed you to make her look sympathetic to viewers in the 74th Games, and you needed her to literally and immediately keep you alive)

……Also, his version of how he fell in love with her has way too much in common with Dante Alighieri’s account of how he first fell in love with Beatrice Portinari for me to be truly okay with it, because Dante is one of the Western Literary Canon’s biggest examples of entitled dudebros who objectify women even while they claim to adore them (because over-idealizing someone is a form of dehumanizing them).

This said, I still don’t dislike Peeta. I just don’t think he’s that great, or that he’s as pure and innocent and cinnamon roll-ish as the books and fandom all make him out to be. Even without my misgivings about Ever*lark, ffs, he is one of the sneakiest, most manipulative characters in the series, and his BS sense of entitlement doesn’t only come out with Katniss

a character I’m indifferent about: Presidents Coin and Snow are both well-executed villains, but I don’t have a lot of feelings about them, personally. They were actually helped by the movies, for me, because Donald Sutherland and Julianne Moore were both really good in their roles, and it made me like them a little more, even if it still didn’t make me have feelings about them or anything

a character who deserved better: Most of them, tbh, but my top six are (in no particular order) Johanna, Madge, Rue, Annie, Finnick, and Gale

a ship I’ve never been able to get into: Katniss/Peeta, see above

But also? Gale/Madge. In my experience, the whole thing only exists so people can have some kind of “uptown girl” fantasy and go, “Look, see, I don’t hate Gale!!! Stop saying that I hate Gale!!! Just let me shove him off to the side and completely mischaracterize the shit out of him and pair him up with Madge for no reason beyond getting him out of the way so I can have Katniss/Peeta!!!!”

Even worse: Effie/Haymitch. For one thing, both of them are gay. I don’t know what books everybody else is reading, but in MY copies of the books, Effie and Haymitch are both gay as fuck, why would you pair up a gay man and a lesbian like that unless it’s like, a situation where Effie and Haymitch get married so no one knows that they’re actually married to Portia and Cinna, respectively

But aside from that (because it’s admittedly a matter of my own headcanons even though I refuse to back down from them), I just??? Effie/Haymitch is just so blatantly a bunch of straight nonsense, pairing the two of them up because he’s a man and she’s a woman and therefore any time they exchange more than two words, it’s ~flirting~ even when Effie has HAPPILY AND ENERGETICALLY been a part of the system that treats all the kids Haymitch as mentored as if their lives mean nothing, and she’s been helping shepherd them to their deaths without getting that this is not good until it affects Katniss and Peeta (which only makes Effie get it because she likes them), and as much as Haymitch’s distaste for Effie is understandable, a lot of his lashing out at her isn’t actually coming from a place of, “I object to you for these fair reasons” so much as it’s coming from a place of Haymitch being a troll for the sake of being a troll, and I just

Sure, he may not want to be her friend, at first, because he assumes, like she does, that friends are not A Thing that’s going to happen, and if he maybe feels like he has been tasked with babysitting her and Peeta during the Quarter Quell, then… that’s not actually inaccurate, because he was kinda tasked with babysitting them by the other rebels.

Like, helping the two of them to survive and getting them out of the arena was the job that Finnick and Mags were given by the other rebels, and he had to be more hands-on about it than, say, Johanna, since Katniss wanted to have an alliance with Mags, which meant she had to have one with Finnick

So, no. The two of them aren’t exactly cozying up to each other in Catching Fire, because both of them are playing certain parts and performing certain versions of themselves based on a lot of assumptions about How The Fuck This Shit Works and a lot of assumptions about their roles and positions in everything (which admittedly end up being less than accurate… because both of them have been manipulated and lied to by everybody who’s pulling the strings)

Anyway, I shouldn’t go on about this too much more because it will make me get defensive and angry, but Finnick and Katniss are my autistic children and they are not a goddamn crack ship and if I had money, I would pay people to stop saying that so I could look at their tags and only see people tagging everything with them as “BROTP,” as opposed to that plus people calling them a crack ship

a ship that was totally wrong and never should have happened: Effie/Haymitch. I went, “EEEUGH” out loud when they kissed, when I say MJ2 in the theatre, and I didn’t feel bad about it because: 1. all of the people who loved them collectively when, “AWWWWW”; and 2. eww, can you say, “what the fuck is this hetero pandering bullshit”

my favourite storyline/moment: The entire, “I drag myself out of nightmares and find there’s no relief in waking. Better not to give into it” scene, because I’m a human cliché and Katniss and Finnick are my autistic children. Also, any and every Joniss scene, because I’m garbage and a human cliché and I just want them to be together, is that so bad

a storyline that never should have been written: idk about anyone else, but I personally choose to live in a world where the series-long alleged “love triangle” was between Katniss/Madge and Johanna/Katniss, and the Katniss/Peeta stuff was only ever during the Games and not actually for real, and Gale and Peeta can go do each other or something, because fuck forced hetero love triangles, that’s why

Also? I’m willing to accept that Prim’s death was legitimately necessary for the plot and the narrative, in the same way that I hate Sirius Black’s death but accept that it was necessary for the sake of the story that JKR wanted to tell, so I can just go, “I see your point and I don’t begrudge you this in canon, but I am going to headcanon around it anyway because I don’t like it”

—but there was ABSOLUTELY NO REASON to kill Finnick. See, much like JKR’s senseless murders of Remus and Tonks in DH, Finnick’s death did nothing to make a point that hadn’t already been made multiple times over, and it added nothing to the story. Yea, like JKR before her, SCollins only killed Finnick for the sake of cheap shock value and reaffirming certain ideas about heroism that the rest of the series tried to deconstruct

It was pointless, it was senseless, it wasn’t necessary, and the story, characters, and readers all deserved better than that

Finnick Odair is happy and fine and he’s definitely alive, because all that unadulterated bullshit, “lmao finnick dies” crap never happened

my first thoughts on the series: uh. The first time I tried to read the books, I didn’t even get to the games themselves, because SCollins introduced Madge, introduced the backstory of her and Katniss being like kinda friends but kinda not but they’re not sure, and I was like, “ugh, why. I already know you’re going to make me suffer this bullshit between the two boys, but why would you hand me a totally valid and much more interesting F/F option. Why” and on the other hand, because Katniss reminded me too much of myself at a point when I wasn’t ready to deal with that

my thoughts now: We all deserved better, but I say that all the time about the HP series, too, so me feeling like the series was kind of a let down in various places and criticizing different aspects of it? Isn’t going to stop me from enjoying it

If you're still taking prompts could you pretty please do one when during the war the Capitol sent videos of Effie and the victors being tortured (maybe not of all of them since they wouldn't want to reveal their game) and Haymitch wakes up from his detox time to find all of them and basically looses his shit ? Dead Man

Haymitch couldn’t really tell if it wasThirteen that was cold or if the cold came from him.

The irony was that he was drenched in sweat.

He tried hard not to think about the rehabcell, about being left to curl up on the floor like a dog without a blanket. Itwas his own fault, they had said. They had had him strapped to a bed at firstbut he had broken out, he had… You are adanger for yourself and others… The doctor’s words floated back in hismind, unbidden, and he chased them away. Thirteen wasn’t much of a rehabcenter, that much was sure.

He had flatlined once, they had told him later.He had died. They hadn’t let him stay dead. A part of him wished theyhad.

Katniss would be a problem.

Her accepting to become the Mockingjay was thereason they had finally taken him out of what they called a hospital room – andthat he called a convenient out-of-sight cell – but it wouldn’t be so simple.They had had a quick talk at the end of the briefing but… No. Katniss wouldn’tforgive him so easily.

“What else did I miss?” he asked, making aneffort to focus on the present moment.

It was difficult.

His brain felt slow and sluggish, his mindtended to wander.

Plutarch had brought him to the compartmentthey were supposed to share so he could change – apparently, he was smelly andit was an inconvenience. He started to unbutton the grey shirt, his fingersless deft than he would have liked. It was a complicated task and if Effie hadbeen there…

“Nothing we weren’t expecting.” Plutarchanswered from the living area part ofthe compartment. He was tinkering with a tablet, checking reports or… something. Haymitch wasn’t privy to suchtechnology. He had been given a communicuff but that was the extent of hisprivileges. “You’re caught up on the main things.”

He wasn’t thrilled about having to share aroom, least of all with a Capitol. The only Capitol he wouldn’t have mindedsharing with…

He shook his head and finally managed to shedhis shirt.

His undershirt was easier to pass over hishead.

“You’re hiding something.” he accused, applyinga generous amount of deodorant. A shower would have been better but they didn’thave time for that – and five minutes of lukewarm water followed by an icystream didn’t seem appealing, he wanted an hour of hot water or, even better, ahot bath, preferably with a hot blond who would insist on using too muchflowery smelling products in it. Plutarch had been shifty ever since he hadtaken him out of his cell. Every time the conversation revolved around thecaptured victors and the missing escort, he deflected.“Tell me.”

There was a deep sigh and Plutarch appeared onthe sleeping area’s threshold, his arms folded across his chest, the tablet notquite safely dangling from his fingers.

Haymitch wasn’t entirely comfortable being thesubject of his scrutiny when he wasn’t wearing a shirt. The Head Gamemaker’seyes immediately went to the huge angry-looking scar on his right side.Everyone always did that when they saw him bare-chested for the first time. Thescar the axe had left was impressive enough to catch anyone’s attention.

But Plutarch was observant and Haymitch couldtell he took in the other smaller scars. He turned away under the pretext ofgrabbing a clean undershirt from the meager pile of clothes he had beenallotted but he regretted it at once because it exposed his back. The scarsthere were faint but characteristic enough that the Capitol would know theycame from a whip. Although he probably already knew. Haymitch didn’t believefor one second that the rebels hadn’t investigated him and being whipped forpoaching at fifteen must have been in his file.

“Look…” Plutarch hesitated. “We received sometransmissions from the Capitol early on. They were meant to unsettle us,nothing more. You don’t need to see them.”

“What kind of transmissions?” he frowned,slipping a new undershirt on. He felt better once he wasn’t so exposed to theHead Gamemaker’s gaze. How he was supposed to sleep at night with a Capitol manin the room he wasn’t sure. He trusted Plutarch to an extent but accepting tobe vulnerable next to a Gamemaker…

It was a problem for later though.

“Videos.” the man replied reluctantly. “Videosthat allowed us to ascertain three of the captives have been tortured forintel.”

He briefly closed his eyes before passing agrey shirt on. He knew about that. Even if he hadn’t guessed, it was one of thefirst things they had told him when they had taken him out of his rehab cell.

But…

“You have videos of them being tortured.” heclarified. His fingers were shaking too badly for him to hope succeeding indoing the buttons. He left it open and grabbed a black woolen sweater. The coldwouldn’t go away. It was wrapped around his bones. “Jo, Peeta and Annie.”

“Not Annie Cresta, no.” Plutarch denied, beforeclearing his throat. “Johanna Mason, Peeta Mellark and…”

The Gamemaker’s voice trailed off awkwardly.

Haymitch didn’t need him to finish.

“Effie.” he said flatly.

Plutarch made a face. “I am sorry, Haymitch.”

“You can be.” he spat. “It’s your fault.” TheCapitol didn’t even flinch and it annoyed Haymitch even more. There was noflash of guilt on his face, no regret, nothing.“You were supposed to get her out. I wanted her with me. You said…”

“I know.” Plutarch cut him off. “I stand bywhat I said then. Taking her with us on that hovercraft would have been farmore dangerous than having her safely and quietly extracted from the Capitol.There was no guarantee we wouldn’t be blown up out of the sky, Haymitch. It wassupposed to be safer for her than it was for us.”

“But we’rehere and she’s not.” he growled.

The Head Gamemaker looked down at the stretchof floor between them, finally betraying something.Damn those Capitols and their abilities to hide their feelings so well.

“I know you and Effie…” Plutarch started.

“You know fuckabout us.” he interrupted him before the man could say something that wouldfreak him out even more. “Don’t you fuckingdare…”

“I know you are friends, at the very least.” the Gamemaker countered. “And I knowyou lost quite a few of those in the last couple of weeks and I am sorry for that, I truly am. And, believeit or not, I am sorry Effie is now in that position. It was never supposed tohappen.”

“She doesn’t even know anything.” he retortedangrily. “She wasn’t…” He shook his head and outstretched his hand. “Give methat tablet. I want to see.”

Plutarch made a face. “I don’t think that’s agood idea. You don’t need…”

“Showme.” he snarled.

The Head Gamemaker clucked his tongue once inobvious displeasure but relented. He tapped on his tablet and then handed it tohim. “I’ll be in Command. Join us when you’re ready.”

He waited until the sliding door shut onPlutarch to press play.

The first video was Johanna’s.

His hands shook so badly that he was forced toplace the tablet down on the small table in the living area. He sat downheavily, elbows on the table, hands pressed hard against his mouth. For eachquestion they asked, the young woman answered with an insult. He flinched withevery blow.

Next was Peeta and that was worse. He couldn’twatch. Not without a bottle. He spent the whole video with his eyes closed,listening to hasty denials and screams that would follow him into hisnightmares.

Then he heard the video change and he felt sickto his stomach.

“Who are you?”

The question was weird enough that he openedhis eyes.

Effie’s arms were tied above her head, sheseemed to be dangling from the ceiling, her feet barely touching the ground.Whatever was going on had started a while ago, he could tell. The back of herprison suit was torn and the Peacekeeper circling her had a whip in his hand.

Haymitch tasted bile.

The video was in black and white but he couldtell her face was covered with bruises.

Her breathing was loud and heavy. It took someeffort on her part to speak.

“EffieTrinket.”

For a second there was only statics and thenthe crack of the whip echoed. She yelled when it tore at her skin.

“Who areyou?”

He clenched his jaw, his fists bundled so tightit hurt. He wanted to punch something – or rather someone.

She licked her lips and jutted her chin high.He wished she would lose the attitude. It was commendable but…

“Effie Trinket.” she answered again.

There was no pause before the whip lashed outthis time. He counted them. Counted every five times that leather struck herback and with each and every one of them he felt his heart grow colder, darker. Something in him was growling,the beast he kept on a leash, the dark part inside… The victor who had killedfor less.

“Who are you?” the Peacekeeper asked again. “Come on, pet… I don’t have all day. Say itand then you can go back to your friends. I’ll give you water even. Don’t youwant some? It’s been a while since you’ve had a drink, yeah? And Mason… Evenlonger. I bet she would like some water. All you have to do is say it. Who are you?”

The man made the whip crack in the air and,even though it didn’t strike her, Effie flinched and tried to curl up, toprotect herself. She lost her already tenuous footing and she ended up danglingfrom her arms with all her weight. She let out a pained sob.

“It’s easy. You say itand I give water to your friend.” the Peacekeeper insisted.

Haymitch didn’t understand what the man wasplaying at. She didn’t know anything so what kind of information did he wantout of her. He had asked her name and she had given it and now…

Effie mumbled something he didn’t catch.

Haymitch watched, feeling sicker and sicker, asthe man ran his fingers through her hair almost fondly before brutally yankingher head back. She was staring straight at the camera but it was as if shewasn’t seeing it, as if she wasn’t seeing much of anything.

The amount of pain she must have been in…

“Louder so he can hearyou.” thePeacekeeper ordered. “Who are you?”

“Abernathy’s bitch.” she muttered.

And Haymitch’s blood ran cold before startingto boil.

The man looked smug and pleased with himself ashe addressed the camera directly. This was different from the other videos,Haymitch understood, this wasn’t meant to unsettle Thirteen, this was meant to disturb him. This was Snow’s revenge.

“Hear that,Abernathy?” thePeacekeeper chuckled. “We’re trainingyour slut to answer to her real name…” He still had a grip on Effie’s hairand he shook her head a little. “You’vegot something to say to your boyfriend, pet? Last chance… Don’t know which oneof you will kick the bucket first but I don’t think you’ll see each otheragain.”

Effie, Haymitch could tell, was catching up towhat was happening.

He had been expecting everything but laughter though. It was a tad hystericaland almost too unhinged but it rang clear as day and it annoyed the Peacekeeperwho backslapped her. She spat some blood in a very unladylike fashion, stillchuckling.

“If he saw your face,you are a dead man.” shetold her guard.

It seemed the thought was hilarious to herbecause she kept laughing even as he used the whip again.

Haymitch couldn’t tell if she was that far gonethat the pain didn’t register or if they had broken her.

“You’re dead, bitch.” the Peacekeeper told her and thenthe video cut.

Haymitch felt dizzy and hollow.

He didn’t feel it coming but his stomachchurned and he barely had time to turn his head not to be sick all over thetable.  He couldn’t stop the shivers orthe trembling. He couldn’t get the sounds out of his head. Johanna’s insults,Peeta’s screams, Effie’s voice… The crack of the whip…

He punched the wall but the pain gave him norelief.

He couldn’t breathe.

He couldn’t think.

You are a dead man.

He was.Whoever that Peacekeeper was, Haymitch would find him and he would make himpay. He would make them all pay.

Nobody touched his family.

Nobody.
