Sunrise on the reaping bellow, you know the drill
“I know that,” she says. “I’ve known who you are ever since you helped with my makeup box. And I know your position could not have been easy.”
It’s surprisingly touching. “Thanks, Effie.”
“But they really are for a greater good. The Hunger Games.” And now she’s lost me.
this scene really struck me, because…does she really think that? I find it funny how fast she recognized the anti-government edge of her speech, implying that “she knows his position could not have been easy, thus she felt sorry he had to go through it”, and how it went against the whole purpose of how it was all the great sacrifice she was supposed to believe, and just as fast made sure to reaffirm that it all was for a greater good. Even though it sounded out of place.
Stay with me —since the beginning, when she broke into the apartment with those outfits in hand, telling everyone they should work hard because “A lot of people lost their lives to guarantee peace and prosperity for their nation”, effie wasn’t giving her opinion on the matter, she was repeating the propaganda the government sold. Word for word.
which reminds me how she wasn’t clueless to the consequences of their acts during the first two books. How upset she was every time Katniss did something reckless, because she knew it was going to affect “all of them”. How she knew about Seneca’s not-quite-suicide, and was terrified to know that Katniss did know too…all of it doesn’t imply the sky-level of ignorance we usually associate with her.
the trinkets were somehow disgraced in society, hence effie had to do the double duty of clawing her way back into the high class to be respected in the field and still try to protect her sister’s reputation and, more likely than not, her safety. This was hard labor and it probably gave her some privileged knowledge of how it all really worked. She was the victim of a dictatorship, and i feel like she knew exactly what it meant…she did believe in the propaganda Snow sold, at some level, but she also knew she didn’t have a choice of supporting it or not
which brings us back to the scene— effie was in the bugged apartment of District Twelve with a dozen of peacekeepers standing right behind her, her little speech about her recognizing haymitch as a real person, and feeling sorry (or the closest thing of remorse she could afford) was risky (if you know how not-understanding a dictator is when it comes down to anti-government speeches, you know that she was in danger only for feeling sorry) and she knew that. she had a sister, she had a reputation, she had a family and friends, and years of life…is it really a surprise that she would jump right into her parrot-mood when she noticed she was that close to imply she didn’t really agreed with the whole ordeal?
Was Effie truly a loyalist who buys into the capitol propaganda, or is she just a person under a totalitarian regime who knows the boundaries of safety? She was terrified of the president, you can see that when she said “HE asked you to wear it”. she had people to lose, she had her own safety on the line, should she risk it all for a boy she barely knew?
I am not saying she didn’t have her controversial opinion, or that she didn’t believe in the idea that the games guaranteed her safety. What i am saying is that she saw it more like an unavoidable social dutty than a necessity, and she’s aware that she couldn’t speak against it if she wanted to see the sun rising the next day. She is a much more complex character than just “a selfish loyalist who truly buys the entire propaganda” or the “innocent daughter of Panem”

@butchbetty

It’s okay I didn’t need my heart anyway. 😭
Okay
But think about how mean Haymitch is to Effie. You can’t tell me he didn’t truly care about her on the inside after reading Sunrise in the Reaping.
EVERYONE HE CARED ABOUT WAS TAKEN OUT BY SNOW.
If he was nice to Effie; if he outwardly showed any appreciation or kindness to her; how long before snow took her away too?
It’s part of trying to protect the people he LOVES.
And I think she knows this. I think it’s why she puts up with it tbh.
Yes his one true love is Lenore Dove, and I respect this. But you can’t deny he cares about Effie too. You just can’t.

Effie to her victors in Quarter Quell
Effie to Haymitch: You deserve to look beautiful tonight.
Effie to Katniss: Let's show them what real beauty looks like.

So Effie gives him a golden bracelet of flames —reminding him of all-fire, and his love, and the flaming ladybugs, and the flint striker— to show how they are all a team in catching fire.

Does Effie know the emotional turmoil she is putting him through by specifying making that bracelet flames??? 😭😭😭 She has to know a little bit, she watched his games. It’s so specially haunting omg.

I love how Sunrise on the Reaping highlights how Haymitch and Effie never would've worked as a couple. Yes, Effie is kind to Haymitch in a way that no one else in the Capitol is. She joins him in the arena launch room so he wouldn't be there by himself. She's with him in many moments simply so he won't be alone, just to be a kind presence.
But she also fully buys into the Capitol propaganda. She tell Haymitch, a victor who has just gone through unbelievable trauma, who watched multiple friends be killed brutally by the Capitol, that the Games are necessary. That what the Capitol is doing is needed. That putting him in that arena was for the greater good.
Despite how much they've been shipped over the years (and even despite how I like them as a ship too), I'm glad Suzanne stood her ground on this. There are certain things you shouldn't compromise on when it come to having a partner, and a difference like this is important.

by the way what makes post-war hayffie so precious to me is also the complexity of how their dynamics switch.
effie's trauma is fresh, her body still healing, and while she tries to keep a semblance of normalcy haymitch knows she needs time, care and a period of peace before they can even think about talking about them.
and sometimes there is resentment. sometimes there is grief. sometimes there is an idolisation of their time before because things seemed simpler.
but it's worth it. so everyday it's a little effort. not towards trying to get before back, but creating a new now. a now used to freedom.

The Geese thing is actually my favorite metaphor Suzanne could have used because Geese do mate for life… unless their partners die. When that happens they go through an intense grieving period before moving on.
Suzanne didn’t bury Hayffie. She left the door wide open and it’s honestly never been more alive.
controversial opinion but I don’t think lenore’s entrance affects hayffie canonly at all. In fact I think it actually makes me like hayffie more.
because even if haymitch will love lenore dove for the rest of his life, which he will, she’s gone, and he’s still alive. He can love her and love someone else, and that can be okay. Because love for someone who’s dead is so, so different from loving someone who’s living. Haymitch is an adult, he’s allowed to contain a multitude of feelings and have complex emotions about multiple people. effie isn’t trying to take Lenore Dove’s place, they have their own, new, different thing, and that has meaning, too. The way that Haymitch loves Effie doesn’t detract from how much he loves Lenore, and vise versa.
Peoples relationships can be different and equally important. (human relationships usually don’t fit in the strict boxes we make for them, but that’s a different post.) Haymitch doesn’t love either Effie or Lenore more, and saying that he can only love one like loving a person is a thing that can be scaled on a pyramid is kinda awful. Haymitch loves Lenore, but she’s dead, not to mention the fact that Effie herself is an entirely different person than Lenore was.
not being in active grief doesn’t mean he doesn’t remember her, or doesn’t still miss her, or loves her less then he loves Effie. It just means he found something for him to love in life, too, and I personally think lenore herself would love that. She wouldn’t have wanted Haymitch to stay yearning about her forever; the whole point of ending the games was so there could be a better future. I think it works better if they both exist, because both ships are unique and beautiful in their own way.
and even if it didn’t complement hayffie really well, you’re allowed to ship whatever you like without caring about wether or not it’s canon.
human relationships are nebulous and nonlinear (the same way everything about humans are) and you can have completely unique feelings about two different people. it isn’t like you have an inventory slot for people you love and then once there’s something in it it’s full, nuance exists

SPOILER ALERT
Y’all don’t understand how loud I scream when I read SROTR and saw “who’s ready for a big, big, big day?” Because I just know it’s my girl Effie. Okay so I’m a BIG Hayffie shipper, don’t ask why but with the way SC wrote the new book, Ik she really try every possible way to tell people she don’t intend for those two to be a thing. Especially with the epilogue and Haymitch being faithful to Lenore Dove (who I adore but I’m so sorry, Effie is forever my girl). It’s just something about how Effie is represented in the new book, she helps him in the shadow then stood by his side for over two decades. Watching him suffered, taking care of the agenda knowing their tributes more likely to die. Knowing they’ll fail but do that together too. Lenore Dove is his first and only love but you can’t ignore how much Effie CARED. Imma just be delusional. Forever a fan of Effie “that is Mahogany” fucking Trinket. MY SHAYLA.

"Effie!" cries Proserpina, flinging herself into the newcomer's arms.
😲😫😥
Haymitch instantly thinking of Effie Trinket as a "newcomer" the first time he met her in SOTR. She really was his ally from the get-go!

just finished sotr and there’s a lot to say but I’ll start with low hanging fruit and say I still believe in hayffie
if anyone who also exists at the intersection of all for the game and the hunger games, hayffie reminds me of Wymack and Abbie. they love each other. she’s all he has left after losing everyone and they build a found family together and everyone is wondering whether or not they’ve kissed (they have)
theyre caught in each others orbit if you will

One thing I read a lot is that "Suzanne didn't like Hayffie" in the movies, I already think the opposite just by their interactions in the book I already discard this idea of her not liking it. If she wanted to discard any kind of affectionate relationship between them that the movies created she could have just kept the narrative line that she created in the trilogy where Katniss always describes that they "don't like each other" that they hate each other "she could go there and it wouldn't be disconnected but no she wanted to follow the line of the movies where we know they have affection for each other there even Effie herself I see that she wrote the character more similar to the ones in the movies, if you read the book Sunrise on the Reaping and then skip to watch the movies it seems that the Hayffie relationship is well connected, and also all the Hayffie interactions in the movies certainly went through Suzanne's approval, especially something that wasn't in her book, so yes, I believe that the Hayffie relationship in the books may have been based on the interactions in the movies.

What if Effie was always worried about the well being of Haymitch. What if when the games weren’t happening she talked about him to Proserpina to the point that Proserpina’s kids thought Aunt Effie was married to an unseen man named Haymitch? Until one day they asked why she didn’t have any kids if she has been married for so long and she had to tell them that Haymitch was just a work acquaintance. That’s how she presented him, a work acquaintance she only tolerated long enough to get her time on television. But when she got home after a hard day, he was so much more. What if that’s why he tore his phone off the wall? Every time Effie needed someone to talk to, really talk to, in a way she couldn’t to even her sister, she called him late at night to vent about whatever ailed her. He never answered of course, and she’s the only one that ever called. His voicemail was nothing more than a diary for a lonely woman who always had company. Haymitch didn’t now this, only that sometimes a small ringing that he could never find the source of would rouse him back to this colorless world we call today. During a particularly bad night terror, the ringing got to him early and he stalked around to find the source. Tearing through his house ripping up everything until he finally got to the phone and Effie was disconnected. She got him the new phone after the victory tour of their only tributes. It was to be used for work communication only. But as Haymitch knows, it’s very easy to fall into old habits. She called a couple of nights after the quell was announced, once it really hit her, she was a little drunk and was very surprised when a sober Haymitch answered. How roles can reverse. They spoke for hours, real conversation, heartwarming, friendly, comforting, Effie felt some semblance of who Haymitch used to be returning as they spoke on. Apparently corniolanus snow thought so too when the recording was played for him. What if that’s why she was imprisoned and tortured like she was?
